So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
And the LORD God took the man, and put
him into the garden of
Eden to dress it and to keep it.
Then the LORD God took the man and placed
him in the Garden of
Eden to
cultivate and keep it.
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
And the LORD God commanded him, “You may eat freely from every tree of the garden,
And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
The LORD God also said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make for him a suitable helper.”
And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.
The man gave names to all the
livestock, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
And from the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man, He made a woman and brought her to him.
And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
But the LORD God called out to the man, “Where are you?”
Therefore the LORD God sent
him forth from the garden of
Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
Therefore the LORD God banished
him from the Garden of
Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is
crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.”
And
Cain talked with
Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that
Cain rose up against
Abel his brother, and
slew him.
Then
Cain said to his brother
Abel, “Let us go out to the field.” And while they were in the field,
Cain rose up against his brother
Abel and killed
him.
And the LORD said unto
him, Therefore
whosoever slayeth
Cain,
vengeance shall be taken on
him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon
Cain, lest any finding
him should kill
him.
And
Lamech took unto
him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other
Zillah.
And
Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other
Zillah.
And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name
Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of
Abel, whom
Cain slew.
And Adam again had relations with his wife, and she gave birth to a son and named
him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another seed in place of
Abel, since
Cain killed
him.”
And to
Seth, to
him also there was born a son; and he called his name
Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.
And to
Seth also a son was born, and he called
him Enosh. At that time men began to call upon the name of the LORD.
This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;
This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, He made him in His own likeness.
And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and
begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name
Seth:
When Adam was 130 years old, he had a son in his own likeness, after his own image; and he named
him Seth.
And
Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took
him.
Enoch walked with God, and then he was no more, because God had taken
him away.
And he called his name
Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and
toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath
cursed.
And he named
him Noah, saying, “May this one comfort us in the labor and
toil of our hands caused by the ground that the LORD has
cursed.”
And it
repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it
grieved him at his heart.
And the LORD
regretted that He had made man on the earth, and He was
grieved in His heart.
Thus did
Noah; according to all that God commanded
him, so did he.
So
Noah did everything precisely as God had commanded
him.
And
Noah did according unto all that the LORD commanded
him.
And
Noah did all that the LORD had commanded
him.
And
Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with
him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
And
Noah and his wife, with his sons and their wives, entered the ark to escape the waters of the flood.
And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.
And they entered, the male and female of every living thing, as God had commanded
Noah. Then the LORD shut
him in.
And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the
creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and
Noah only remained alive, and they that were with
him in the ark.
And every living thing on the face of the earth was destroyed—man and
livestock,
crawling creatures and birds of the air; they were
blotted out from the earth, and only
Noah and those with
him in the ark remained.
And God remembered
Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with
him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged;
But God remembered
Noah and all the animals and
livestock that were with
him in the ark. And God sent a wind over the earth, and the waters began to
subside.
Also he sent forth a
dove from
him, to see if the waters were
abated from off the face of the ground;
Then
Noah sent out a
dove to see if the waters had
receded from the surface of the ground.
But the
dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto
him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto
him into the ark.
But the
dove found no place to rest her foot, and she returned to
him in the ark, because the waters were still covering the surface of all the earth. So he reached out his hand and brought her back inside the ark.
And the
dove came in to
him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so
Noah knew that the waters were
abated from off the earth.
And behold, the
dove returned to
him in the evening with a freshly
plucked olive leaf in her
beak. So
Noah knew that the waters had
receded from the earth.
And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the
dove; which returned not again unto
him any more.
And
Noah waited seven more days and sent out the
dove again, but this time she did not return to
him.
And
Noah went forth, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with
him:
So
Noah came out, along with his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives.
And God spake unto
Noah, and to his sons with
him, saying,
Then God said to
Noah and his sons with
him,
And he
drank of the wine, and was
drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.
But when he
drank some of its wine, he became
drunk and uncovered
himself inside his tent.
And
Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto
him.
Unto
Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of
Japheth the elder, even to
him were children born.
And I will
bless them that
bless thee, and
curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
I will
bless those who
bless you and
curse those who
curse you; and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you.”
So
Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto
him; and Lot went with
him: and
Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of
Haran.
So
Abram departed, as the LORD had directed
him, and Lot went with
him.
Abram was seventy-five years old when he left
Haran.
And the LORD appeared unto
Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto
him.
Then the LORD appeared to
Abram and said, “I will give this land to your offspring.” So
Abram built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to
him.
The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and
commended her before Pharaoh: and the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house.
When Pharaoh’s officials saw Sarai, they
commended her to
him, and she was taken into the palace of Pharaoh.
And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him: and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had.
Then Pharaoh gave his men orders concerning
Abram, and they sent
him away with his wife and all his possessions.
And
Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with
him, into the south.
So
Abram went up out of Egypt into the Negev—he and his wife and all his possessions—and Lot was with
him.
Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.
So Lot chose the whole plain of the Jordan for
himself and set out toward the east. And
Abram and Lot parted company.
And the LORD said unto
Abram, after that Lot was separated from
him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:
After Lot had departed, the LORD said to
Abram, “Now lift up your eyes from the place where you are, and look to the north and south and east and west,
And in the
fourteenth year came
Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with
him, and
smote the Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzims in
Ham, and the
Emims in Shaveh Kiriathaim,
In the
fourteenth year,
Chedorlaomer and the kings allied with
him went out and defeated the Rephaites in Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzites in
Ham, the Emites in Shaveh-kiriathaim,
And he divided
himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and
smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.
During the night,
Abram divided his forces and routed
Chedorlaomer’s army, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.
And the king of
Sodom went out to meet
him after his return from the slaughter of
Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with
him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s
dale.
After
Abram returned from defeating
Chedorlaomer and the kings allied with
him, the king of
Sodom went out to meet
him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).
And he blessed
him, and said, Blessed be
Abram of the most high God,
possessor of heaven and earth:
and he blessed
Abram and said: “Blessed be
Abram by God Most High,
Creator of heaven and earth,
And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave
him tithes of all.
and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” Then
Abram gave
Melchizedek a tenth of everything.
And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto
him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own
bowels shall be thine heir.
Then the word of the LORD came to
Abram, saying, “This one will not be your heir, but one who comes from your own body will be your heir.”
And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.
And the LORD took him outside and said, “Now look to the heavens and count the stars, if you are able.” Then He told him, “So shall your offspring be.”
And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
Abram believed the LORD, and it was credited to
him as righteousness.
And he said unto
him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of
Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to
inherit it.
The LORD also told
him, “I am the LORD, who brought you out of
Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.”
And he said unto
him, Take me an
heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a
turtledove, and a young
pigeon.
And the LORD said to
him, “Bring Me a
heifer, a goat, and a ram, each three years old, along with a
turtledove and a young
pigeon.”
And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.
So
Abram brought all these to
Him, split each of them down the middle, and laid the
halves opposite each other. The birds, however, he did not cut in half.
And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon
Abram; and, lo, an
horror of great darkness fell upon
him.
As the sun was setting,
Abram fell into a deep sleep, and suddenly great terror and darkness
overwhelmed him.
Now Sarai
Abram’s wife bare
him no children: and she had an
handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was
Hagar.
And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name
Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy
affliction.
The angel of the LORD proceeded: “Behold, you have conceived and will bear a son. And you shall name
him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of
affliction.
And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.
He will be a wild
donkey of a man, and his hand will be against
everyone, and
everyone’s hand against
him; he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.”
And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after
him that
seeth me?
So
Hagar gave this name to the LORD who had spoken to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “Here I have seen the One who sees me!”
And when
Abram was
ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to
Abram, and said unto
him, I am the
Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
And
Abram fell on his face: and God talked with
him, saying,
Then
Abram fell facedown, and God said to
him,
Then Abraham fell upon his face, and
laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto
him that is an hundred years old? and shall
Sarah, that is
ninety years old, bear?
Abraham fell facedown. Then he
laughed and said to
himself, “Can a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Can
Sarah give birth at the age of
ninety?”
And God said,
Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with
him for an
everlasting covenant, and with his seed after
him.
But God replied, “Your wife
Sarah will indeed bear you a son, and you are to name
him Isaac. I will establish My covenant with
him as an
everlasting covenant for his descendants after
him.
And as for
Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed
him, and will make
him fruitful, and will multiply
him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he
beget, and I will make
him a great nation.
As for
Ishmael, I have heard you, and I will surely
bless him; I will make
him fruitful and multiply
him greatly. He will become the father of twelve rulers, and I will make
him into a great nation.
And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.
When He had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.
And Abraham took
Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house; and
circumcised the flesh of their
foreskin in the
selfsame day, as God had said unto
him.
On that very day Abraham took his son
Ishmael and all those born in his household or purchased with his money—every male among the members of Abraham’s household—and he
circumcised them, just as God had told
him.
And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money of the stranger, were
circumcised with
him.
And all the men of Abraham’s household—both servants born in his household and those purchased from foreigners—were
circumcised with
him.
And the LORD appeared unto
him in the plains of
Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;
Then the LORD appeared to Abraham by the Oaks of
Mamre in the heat of the day, while he was sitting at the entrance of his tent.
And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,
And Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he ran from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.
And they said unto
him, Where is
Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent.
“Where is your wife
Sarah?” they asked. “There, in the tent,” he replied.
And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo,
Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And
Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind
him.
Then the LORD said, “I will surely return to you at this time next year, and your wife
Sarah will have a son!” Now
Sarah was behind
him,
listening at the entrance to the tent.
Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?
Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and through him all the nations of the earth will be blessed.
For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
For I have chosen him, so that he will command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, in order that the LORD may bring upon Abraham what He has promised.”
And he spake unto
him yet again, and said,
Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty’s sake.
Once again Abraham spoke to the LORD, “Suppose forty are found there?” He answered, “On account of the forty, I will not do it.”
And he said unto
him, Oh let not the Lord be
angry, and I will speak:
Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.
Then Abraham said, “May the Lord not be
angry, but let me speak further. Suppose thirty are found there?” He replied, “If I find thirty there, I will not do it.”
And there came two angels to
Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of
Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed
himself with his face toward the ground;
Now the two angels arrived at
Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the
gateway of the city. When Lot saw them, he got up to meet them, bowed facedown,
And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto
him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did
bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.
But Lot insisted so strongly that they followed
him into his house. He prepared a feast for them and
baked unleavened bread, and they
ate.
And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
They called out to Lot, saying, “Where are the men who came to you
tonight? Send them out to us so we can have relations with them!”
And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,
Lot went outside to meet them,
shutting the door behind
him.
And while he
lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being
merciful unto
him: and they brought
him forth, and set
him without the city.
But when Lot
hesitated, the men
grabbed his hand and the hands of his wife and his two daughters. And they led them safely out of the city, because of the LORD’s
compassion for them.
And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.
“Very well,” he answered, “I will grant this request as well, and will not
demolish the town you indicate.
But his wife looked back from behind
him, and she became a
pillar of salt.
But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a
pillar of salt.
And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.
Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains—for he was afraid to stay in Zoar—where they lived in a cave.
Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
Come, let us get our father
drunk with wine so we can sleep with
him and preserve his line.”
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that the
firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay
yesternight with my father: let us make
him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with
him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Look, I
slept with my father last night. Let us get
him drunk with wine again
tonight so you can go in and sleep with
him and we can preserve our father’s line.”
And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
So again that night they got their father
drunk with wine, and the younger daughter went in and
slept with
him; he was not aware when she lay down or when she got up.
And the
firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.
The older daughter gave birth to a son and named
him Moab. He is the father of the Moabites of
today.
And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of
Ammon unto this day.
The younger daughter also gave birth to a son, and she named
him Ben-ammi. He is the father of the
Ammonites of
today.
But God came to
Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to
him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man’s wife.
One night, however, God came to
Abimelech in a dream and told
him, “You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken, for she is a married woman.”
And God said unto
him in a dream,
Yea, I know that thou
didst this in the
integrity of thy heart; for I also
withheld thee from
sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.
Then God said to
Abimelech in the dream, “
Yes, I know that you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from
sinning against Me. That is why I did not let you touch her.
Then
Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto
him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I
offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.
Then
Abimelech called Abraham and asked, “What have you done to us? How have I
sinned against you, that you have brought such
tremendous guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should not be done.”
And
Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored
him Sarah his wife.
So
Abimelech brought sheep and cattle, menservants and maidservants, and he gave them to Abraham and restored his wife
Sarah to
him.
For
Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to
him.
So
Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised.
And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto
him, whom
Sarah bare to
him, Isaac.
And Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son
Sarah bore to
him.
And Abraham
circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded
him.
When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham
circumcised him, as God had commanded
him.
And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.
Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
And she said, Who would have said unto Abraham, that
Sarah should have given children
suck? for I have born
him a son in his old age.
She added, “Who would have told Abraham that
Sarah would
nurse children? Yet I have borne
him a son in his old age.”
And she went, and sat her down over against
him a good way off, as it were a
bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against
him, and lift up her voice, and
wept.
Then she went off and sat down nearby, about a
bowshot away, for she said, “I cannot bear to watch the boy die!” And as she sat nearby, she lifted up her voice and
wept.
Arise, lift up the
lad, and hold
him in thine hand; for I will make
him a great nation.
Get up, lift up the boy, and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”
