And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:
and said to them, “Cross over before the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of Israel,
On that day the LORD
magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of
his life.
On that day the LORD
exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel, and they
revered him all the days of
his life, just as they had
revered Moses.
And it came to pass, when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD were come up out of the midst of Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet were lifted up unto the dry land, that the waters of Jordan returned unto their place, and flowed over all his banks, as they did before.
When the priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD came up out of the Jordan and their feet touched the dry land, the waters of the Jordan returned to their course and overflowed all the banks as before.
And it came to pass, when Joshua was by
Jericho, that he lifted up
his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with
his sword drawn in
his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our
adversaries?
Now when Joshua was near
Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in
His hand. Joshua approached Him and asked, “Are You for us or for our enemies?”
And he said,
Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on
his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto
his servant?
“Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as Commander of the LORD’s army.” Then Joshua fell facedown in reverence and asked Him, “What does my Lord have to say to His servant?”
But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the LORD: they shall come into the treasury of the LORD.
For all the silver and gold and all the articles of bronze and iron are holy to the LORD; they must go into His treasury.”
And Joshua
adjured them at that time, saying,
Cursed be the man before the LORD, that riseth up and buildeth this city
Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in
his firstborn, and in
his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.
At that time Joshua
invoked this solemn oath: “
Cursed before the LORD is the man who rises up and rebuilds this city,
Jericho; at the cost of
his firstborn he will lay its foundations; at the cost of
his youngest he will set up its gates.”
So the LORD was with Joshua; and his fame was noised throughout all the country.
So the LORD was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land.
And Joshua rent
his clothes, and fell to the earth upon
his face before the ark of the LORD until the
eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.
Then Joshua
tore his clothes and fell facedown before the ark of the LORD until evening, as did the elders of Israel; and they all
sprinkled dust on their heads.
And he brought
his household man by man; and
Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.
And he had the family of Zabdi come forward man by man, and
Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was selected.
So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was
hid in
his tent, and the silver under it.
So Joshua sent messengers who ran to the tent, and there it all was, hidden in
his tent, with the silver
underneath.
And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took
Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the
wedge of gold, and
his sons, and
his daughters, and
his oxen, and
his asses, and
his sheep, and
his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of
Achor.
Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took
Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the
cloak, the bar of gold,
his sons and daughters,
his oxen and
donkeys and sheep,
his tent, and everything else he owned, and brought them to the Valley of
Achor.
And they raised over him a great
heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of
his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of
Achor, unto this day.
And they
heaped over
Achan a large pile of rocks that remains to this day. So the LORD turned from
His burning anger. Therefore that place is called the Valley of
Achor to this day.
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to
Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of
Ai, and
his people, and
his city, and
his land:
Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid or discouraged. Take the whole army with you, and go up and attack
Ai. See, I have delivered into your hand the king of
Ai,
his people,
his city, and
his land.
And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to
Ai.
Joshua got up early the next morning and
mobilized his men, and he and the elders of Israel marched before them up to
Ai.
And it came to pass, when the king of
Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all
his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he
wist not that there were liers in
ambush against him behind the city.
When the king of
Ai saw the Israelites, he
hurried out early in the morning with the men of the city to
engage them in battle at an appointed place overlooking the Arabah. But he did not know that an
ambush had been set up against him behind the city.
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the
spear that is in thy hand toward
Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the
spear that he had in
his hand toward the city.
Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Hold out your battle
lance toward
Ai, for into your hand I will deliver the city.” So Joshua held out
his battle
lance toward
Ai,
And the
ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out
his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.
and as soon as he did so, the men in
ambush rose quickly from their position. They
rushed forward, entered the city, captured it, and immediately set it on fire.
For Joshua drew not
his hand back,
wherewith he stretched out the
spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of
Ai.
Joshua did not draw back the hand that held
his battle
lance until he had devoted to destruction all who lived in
Ai.
And the king of
Ai he
hanged on a tree until
eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take
his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise
thereon a great
heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.
He hung the king of
Ai on a tree until evening, and at
sunset Joshua commanded that they take down the body from the tree and throw it down at the entrance of the city gate. And over it they raised a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day.
And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded
his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were
sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
The Gibeonites answered, “Your servants were told clearly that the LORD your God had commanded
His servant Moses to give you all the land and
wipe out all its inhabitants before you. So we greatly feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we have done this.
That they feared greatly, because
Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than
Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.
So Adoni-zedek and
his people were greatly
alarmed, because
Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than
Ai, and all its men were mighty.
So Joshua ascended from
Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.
So Joshua and
his whole army, including all the mighty men of
valor, came from
Gilgal.
And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
The whole army returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one
dared to utter a word against the Israelites.
Then Horam king of
Gezer came up to help
Lachish; and Joshua
smote him and
his people, until he had left him none remaining.
At that time Horam king of
Gezer went to help
Lachish, but Joshua struck him down along with
his people, leaving no survivors.
So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of
Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them.
So by the waters of
Merom, Joshua and
his whole army came upon them suddenly and attacked them,
As the LORD commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses.
As the LORD had commanded His servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua. That is what Joshua did, leaving nothing undone of all that the LORD had commanded Moses.
And in the valley, Beth-
aram, and Beth-nimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of
Heshbon, Jordan and
his border, even unto the edge of the sea of Chinnereth on the other side Jordan eastward.
and in the valley, Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, with the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of
Heshbon (the territory on the east side of the Jordan up to the edge of the Sea of Chinnereth).
And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto
Caleb the son of Jephunneh
Hebron for an inheritance.
Then Joshua blessed
Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him
Hebron as
his inheritance.
And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of
Caleb, took it: and he gave him Achsah
his daughter to wife.
So Othniel son of
Caleb’s brother Kenaz captured the city, and
Caleb gave
his daughter Acsah to him in marriage.
But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of
Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of
Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters: and these are the names of
his daughters, Mahlah, and
Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
But Zelophehad son of Hepher (the son of
Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of
Manasseh) had no sons but only daughters. These are the names of
his daughters: Mahlah,
Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
Because the daughters of
Manasseh had an inheritance among
his sons: and the rest of
Manasseh’s sons had the land of
Gilead.
because the daughters of
Manasseh received an inheritance among
his sons. And the land of
Gilead belonged to the rest of the sons of
Manasseh.
Southward it was Ephraim’s, and northward it was
Manasseh’s, and the sea is
his border; and they met together in Asher on the north, and in
Issachar on the east.
Ephraim’s territory was to the south, and
Manasseh’s was to the north, having the Sea as its border and adjoining Asher on the north and
Issachar on the east.
And when he that
doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare
his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.
When someone flees to one of these cities, stands at the entrance of the city gate, and states his case before its elders, they are to bring him into the city and give him a place to live among them.
Now if the
avenger of blood pursues him, they must not surrender the
manslayer into
his hand, because that man killed
his neighbor accidentally without prior
malice.
And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the
slayer return, and come unto
his own city, and unto
his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.
He is to stay in that city until he stands trial before the assembly and until the death of the high priest serving at that time. Then the
manslayer may return to
his own home in the city from which he fled.”
But the fields of the city, and the villages thereof, gave they to
Caleb the son of Jephunneh for
his possession.
But they had given the fields and villages around the city to
Caleb son of Jephunneh as
his possession.
But take
diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all
his ways, and to keep
his commandments, and to
cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.
But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
Did not
Achan the son of Zerah commit a
trespass in the
accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in
his iniquity.
Was not
Achan son of Zerah unfaithful regarding what was set apart for destruction, bringing wrath upon the whole congregation of Israel? Yet it was not only
Achan who perished because of
his sin!’”
But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD.
Rather, let it be a witness between us and you and the generations to come, that we will worship the LORD in His presence with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and peace offerings.’ Then in the future, your descendants cannot say to ours, ‘You have no share in the LORD!’
God
forbid that we should
rebel against the LORD, and turn this day from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the LORD our God that is before
his tabernacle.
Far be it from us to
rebel against the LORD and turn away from Him
today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings, or sacrifices, other than the altar of the LORD our God, which stands before
His tabernacle.”
And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of
Canaan, and multiplied
his seed, and gave him Isaac.
But I took your father Abraham from beyond the Euphrates and led him through all the land of
Canaan, and I multiplied
his descendants. I gave him Isaac,
And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and
Esau: and I gave unto
Esau mount
Seir, to possess it; but Jacob and
his children went down into Egypt.
and to Isaac I gave Jacob and
Esau. I gave
Esau Mount
Seir to possess, but Jacob and
his sons went down to Egypt.
But I would not
hearken unto
Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of
his hand.
but I would not
listen to
Balaam. So he blessed you again and again, and I delivered you from
his hand.
And the people said unto Joshua, The LORD our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.
So the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the LORD our God and obey His voice.”
So Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance.
Then Joshua sent the people away, each to his own inheritance.
And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-serah, which is in mount Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of Gaash.
And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.
And
Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in a hill that
pertained to
Phinehas his son, which was given him in mount Ephraim.
Eleazar son of Aaron also died, and they buried him at Gibeah, which had been given to
his son
Phinehas in the hill country of Ephraim.
And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.
“Judah shall go up,” answered the LORD. “Indeed, I have delivered the land into their hands.”
And Judah said unto
Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the
Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So
Simeon went with him.
Then the men of Judah said to their brothers the Simeonites, “Come up with us to our
allotted territory, and let us fight against the
Canaanites. And we likewise will go with you to your territory.” So the Simeonites went with them.
But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
As Adoni-bezek fled, they pursued him, seized him, and cut off
his thumbs and
big toes.
And Othniel the son of Kenaz,
Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah
his daughter to wife.
So Othniel son of
Caleb’s younger brother Kenaz captured the city, and
Caleb gave
his daughter Acsah to him in marriage.
And Judah went with
Simeon his brother, and they
slew the
Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.
Then the men of Judah went with their brothers the Simeonites, attacked the
Canaanites living in Zephath, and devoted the city to destruction. So it was called Hormah.
And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they
smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all
his family.
So the man showed them the entrance to the city, and they put the city to the sword but released that man and all his family.
And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.
After Joshua had dismissed the people, the Israelites went out to take possession of the land, each to his own inheritance.
And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.
They buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath-heres in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.
And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of
Mesopotamia into
his hand; and
his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim.
The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he became Israel’s judge and went out to war. And the LORD delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of
Aram into the hand of Othniel, who prevailed against him.
But he himself turned again from the
quarries that were by
Gilgal, and said, I have a secret
errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.
But upon reaching the idols near
Gilgal, he himself turned back and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” “Silence,” said the king, and all
his attendants left him.
And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.
Then Ehud approached him while he was sitting alone in the coolness of his upper room. “I have a word from God for you,” Ehud said, and the king rose from his seat.
And Ehud put forth
his left hand, and took the
dagger from
his right
thigh, and thrust it into
his belly:
And Ehud reached with
his left hand, pulled the sword from
his right
thigh, and
plunged it into
Eglon’s
belly.
And the
haft also went in after the
blade; and the fat closed upon the
blade, so that he could not draw the
dagger out of
his belly; and the
dirt came out.
When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.
After Ehud was gone,
Eglon’s servants came in and found the doors of the upper room locked. “He must be
relieving himself in the cool room,” they said.
And the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of
Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, which dwelt in
Harosheth of the Gentiles.
So the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of
Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The commander of
his forces was Sisera, who lived in
Harosheth-hagoyim.
And I will draw unto thee to the river
Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin’s army, with
his chariots and
his multitude; and I will deliver him into thine hand.
And I will draw out Sisera the commander of Jabin’s army,
his chariots, and
his troops to the River
Kishon, and I will deliver him into your hand.’”
Now
Heber the Kenite, which was of the children of Hobab the father in law of Moses, had severed himself from the
Kenites, and pitched
his tent unto the plain of Zaanaim, which is by Kedesh.
Now
Heber the Kenite had moved away from the
Kenites, the descendants of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, and had pitched
his tent by the great tree of Zaanannim, which was near Kedesh.
And Sisera gathered together all
his chariots, even nine hundred
chariots of iron, and all the people that were with him, from
Harosheth of the Gentiles unto the river of
Kishon.
he summoned all nine hundred of
his iron
chariots and all the men with him, from
Harosheth-hagoyim to the River
Kishon.
And the LORD
discomfited Sisera, and all
his chariots, and all
his host, with the edge of the sword before
Barak; so that Sisera lighted down off
his chariot, and fled away on
his feet.
And in front of him the LORD routed with the sword Sisera, all
his charioteers, and all
his army. Sisera abandoned
his chariot and fled on foot.
Howbeit Sisera fled away on
his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of
Heber the Kenite: for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of
Heber the Kenite.
Meanwhile, Sisera had fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of
Heber the Kenite, because there was peace between Jabin king of Hazor and the house of
Heber the Kenite.
Then Jael
Heber’s wife took a
nail of the tent, and took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and
smote the
nail into
his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast
asleep and
weary. So he died.
But as he lay sleeping from
exhaustion,
Heber’s wife Jael took a tent
peg,
grabbed a hammer, and went silently to Sisera. She drove the
peg through
his temple and into the ground, and he died.
And, behold, as
Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come, and I will
shew thee the man whom thou seekest. And when he came into her tent, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the
nail was in
his temples.
When
Barak arrived in pursuit of Sisera, Jael went out to
greet him and said to him, “Come, and I will show you the man you are seeking.” So he went in with her, and there lay Sisera dead, with a tent
peg through
his temple.
They that are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water, there shall they
rehearse the righteous acts of the LORD, even the righteous acts toward the inhabitants of
his villages in Israel: then shall the people of the LORD go down to the gates.
the voices of the singers at the watering places. There they shall recount the righteous acts of the LORD, the righteous deeds of His villagers in Israel. Then the people of the LORD went down to the gates:
And the princes of
Issachar were with
Deborah; even
Issachar, and also
Barak: he was sent on foot into the valley. For the divisions of
Reuben there were great thoughts of heart.
Gilead abode beyond Jordan: and why did
Dan remain in ships? Asher continued on the sea shore, and abode in
his breaches.
Gilead remained beyond the Jordan.
Dan, why did you
linger by the ships? Asher stayed at the coast and remained in
his harbors.
Then were the horsehoofs broken by the means of the pransings, the pransings of their mighty ones.
She put her hand to the
nail, and her right hand to the workmen’s hammer; and with the hammer she
smote Sisera, she
smote off
his head, when she had pierced and
stricken through
his temples.
She reached for the tent
peg, her right hand for the
workman’s hammer. She struck Sisera and
crushed his skull; she
shattered and pierced
his temple.
So let all thine enemies perish, O LORD: but let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.
So may all Your enemies perish, O LORD! But may those who love You
shine like the sun at its brightest.” And the land had rest for forty years.
And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that
pertained unto
Joash the Abi-ezrite: and
his son
Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.
Then the angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to
Joash the Abiezrite, where
his son
Gideon was
threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites.
And
Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this
befallen us? and where be all
his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath
forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.
“Please, my Lord,”
Gideon replied, “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all
His wonders of which our fathers told us, saying, ‘Has not the LORD brought us up out of Egypt?’ But now the LORD has
forsaken us and delivered us into the hand of
Midian.”
Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in
his hand, and touched the flesh and the
unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the
unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of
his sight.
Then the angel of the LORD extended the
tip of the staff that was in
his hand and touched the meat and the
unleavened bread. And fire
flared from the rock and consumed the meat and the
unleavened bread. Then the angel of the LORD
vanished from
his sight.
Then
Gideon took ten men of
his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared
his father’s household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.
So
Gideon took ten of
his servants and did as the LORD had told him. But because he was too afraid of
his father’s household and the men of the city, he did it by night rather than in the
daytime.
And
Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye
plead for
Baal? will ye save him? he that will
plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him
plead for himself, because one hath cast down
his altar.
But
Joash said to all who stood against him, “Are you
contending for
Baal? Are you trying to save him?
Whoever pleads
his case will be put to death by morning! If
Baal is a god, let him
contend for himself with the one who has
torn down
his altar.”
Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let
Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down
his altar.
So on that day
Gideon was called Jerubbaal, that is to say, “Let
Baal contend with him,” because he had
torn down
Baal’s altar.
So he brought down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto
Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with
his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon
his knees to drink.
So
Gideon brought the people down to the water, and the LORD said to him, “Separate those who
lap the water with their tongues like a dog from those who
kneel to drink.”
And the LORD said unto
Gideon, By the three hundred men that
lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto
his place.
Then the LORD said to
Gideon, “With the three hundred men who
lapped the water I will save you and deliver the Midianites into your hand. But all the others are to go home.”
So the people took
victuals in their hand, and their
trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto
his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of
Midian was beneath him in the valley.
So
Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites to their tents but kept the three hundred men, who took charge of the provisions and rams’ horns of the others. And the camp of
Midian lay below him in the valley.
And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.
and
listen to what they are saying. Then your hands will be strengthened to attack the camp.” So he went with Purah
his servant to the outposts where armed men were guarding the camp.
And when
Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto
his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a
cake of barley bread
tumbled into the host of
Midian, and came unto a tent, and
smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along.
And as
Gideon arrived, a man was telling
his friend about a dream. “Behold, I had a dream,” he said, “and I saw a
loaf of barley bread come
tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent so hard that the tent overturned and
collapsed.”
And
his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of
Gideon the son of
Joash, a man of Israel: for into
his hand hath God delivered
Midian, and all the host.
His friend replied: “This is nothing less than the sword of
Gideon son of
Joash, the
Israelite. God has delivered
Midian and the whole camp into
his hand.”
And they stood every man in
his place round about the camp: and all the host ran, and
cried, and fled.
Each
Israelite took
his position around the camp, and the entire Midianite army fled, crying out as they ran.
And the three hundred
blew the
trumpets, and the LORD set every man’s sword against
his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Beth-
shittah in Zererath, and to the border of
Abel-meholah, unto Tabbath.
And when the three hundred rams’ horns sounded, the LORD set all the men in the camp against one another with their swords. The army fled to Beth-
shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of
Abel-meholah near Tabbath.
And
Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him,
faint, yet pursuing them.
Then
Gideon and
his three hundred men came to the Jordan and crossed it, exhausted yet still in pursuit.
And he said unto Jether
his firstborn, Up, and
slay them. But the youth drew not
his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.
So he said to Jether,
his firstborn, “Get up and kill them.” But the young man did not draw
his sword; he was fearful because he was still a youth.
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is
his strength. And
Gideon arose, and
slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels’ necks.
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Get up and kill us
yourself, for as the man is, so is
his strength.” So
Gideon got up and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and he took the
crescent ornaments from the necks of their camels.
And
Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of
his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were
Ishmaelites.)
Then he added, “Let me make a request of you, that each of you give me an
earring from
his plunder.” (For the enemies had gold earrings because they were
Ishmaelites.)
And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.
“We will give them
gladly,” they replied. So they spread out a garment, and each man threw an
earring from
his plunder onto it.
And
Gideon made an
ephod thereof, and put it in
his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a
whoring after it: which thing became a
snare unto
Gideon, and to
his house.
From all this
Gideon made an
ephod, which he placed in Ophrah,
his hometown. But soon all Israel
prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a
snare to
Gideon and
his household.
And Jerubbaal the son of
Joash went and dwelt in
his own house.
and he—Jerubbaal son of
Joash—returned home and settled down.
