So Saul died for
his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to
enquire of it;
So Saul died for his unfaithfulness to the LORD, because he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance,
These also are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, and with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.
Now these were the chiefs of David’s mighty men, who, together with all Israel,
bolstered and strengthened
his kingdom, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.
And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had; Jashobeam, an Hachmonite, the chief of the captains: he lifted up
his spear against three hundred slain by him at one time.
This is the list of David’s mighty men: Jashobeam son of Hachmoni was chief of the officers; he
wielded his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed at one time.
And
Abishai the brother of
Joab, he was chief of the three: for lifting up
his spear against three hundred, he
slew them, and had a name among the three.
Now
Abishai, the brother of
Joab, was chief of the Three, and he lifted
his spear against three hundred men, killed them, and won a name along with the Three.
And he
slew an Egyptian, a man of great
stature, five cubits high; and in the Egyptian’s hand was a
spear like a
weaver’s beam; and he went down to him with a staff, and
plucked the
spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and
slew him with
his own
spear.
He also killed an Egyptian, a huge man five cubits tall. Although the Egyptian had a
spear like a
weaver’s beam in
his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club,
snatched the
spear from
his hand, and killed the Egyptian with
his own
spear.
Behold, he was honourable among the thirty, but attained not to the first three: and David set him over his guard.
He was most honored among the Thirty, but he did not become one of the Three. And David appointed him over his guard.
Jediael the son of Shimri, and Joha his brother, the Tizite,
Jediael son of Shimri and his brother Joha the Tizite,
And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto David into the hold to the wilderness men of might, and men of war fit for the battle, that could handle shield and
buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as the roes upon the mountains;
Some Gadites defected to David at
his stronghold in the desert. They were mighty men of
valor, trained for battle, experts with the shield and
spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions and who were as swift as gazelles on the mountains:
These are they that went over Jordan in the first month, when it had
overflown all
his banks; and they put to flight all them of the valleys, both toward the east, and toward the west.
These are the ones who crossed the Jordan in the first month when it was overflowing all its banks, and they put to flight all those in the valleys, both to the east and to the west.
And there came of the children of Benjamin and Judah to the hold unto David.
Other Benjamites and some men from Judah also came to David in
his stronghold.
Then the spirit came upon Amasai, who was chief of the captains, and he said, Thine are we, David, and on thy side, thou son of
Jesse: peace, peace be unto thee, and peace be to thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee. Then David received them, and made them captains of the band.
Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, the chief of the Thirty, and he said: “We are yours, O David! We are with you, O son of
Jesse! Peace, peace to you, and peace to your helpers, for your God helps you.” So David received them and made them leaders of
his troops.
And there fell some of
Manasseh to David, when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle: but they helped them not: for the lords of the Philistines upon
advisement sent him away, saying, He will fall to
his master Saul to the
jeopardy of our heads.
Some from
Manasseh defected to David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. (They did not help the Philistines because the
Philistine rulers consulted and sent David away, saying, “It will cost us our heads if he defects to
his master Saul.”)
And
Zadok, a young man mighty of valour, and of
his father’s house twenty and two captains.
and
Zadok, a mighty young man of
valor, with 22 commanders from
his own family.
And David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds, and with every leader.
Then David conferred with all his leaders, the commanders of hundreds and of thousands.
And when they came unto the threshingfloor of Chidon, Uzza put forth
his hand to hold the ark; for the oxen
stumbled.
When they came to the
threshing floor of Chidon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark, because the oxen had
stumbled.
And the anger of the LORD was
kindled against Uzza, and he
smote him, because he put
his hand to the ark: and there he died before God.
And the anger of the LORD burned against Uzzah, and He struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.
And the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-
edom in
his house three months. And the LORD blessed the house of Obed-
edom, and all that he had.
Thus the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-
edom in
his house for three months, and the LORD blessed
his household and everything he owned.
And David perceived that the LORD had confirmed him king over Israel, for his kingdom was lifted up on high, because of his people Israel.
And David realized that the LORD had established him as king over Israel and had highly
exalted his kingdom for the sake of
His people Israel.
Now these are the names of
his children which he had in Jerusalem; Shammua, and Shobab,
Nathan, and Solomon,
These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab,
Nathan, Solomon,
So they came up to
Baal-perazim; and David
smote them there. Then David said, God hath broken in upon mine enemies by mine hand like the breaking forth of waters: therefore they called the name of that place
Baal-perazim.
So David and
his men went up to
Baal-perazim, where he defeated the Philistines and said, “Like a
bursting flood, God has
burst out against my enemies by my hand.” So they called that place
Baal-perazim.
And David gathered all Israel together to Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the LORD unto his place, which he had prepared for it.
And David assembled all Israel in Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the LORD to the place he had prepared for it.
Of the sons of
Kohath; Uriel the chief, and
his brethren an hundred and twenty:
From the Kohathites, Uriel the chief and 120 of his relatives;
Of the sons of Merari; Asaiah the chief, and his brethren two hundred and twenty:
from the Merarites, Asaiah the chief and 220 of his relatives;
Of the sons of Gershom;
Joel the chief, and
his brethren an hundred and thirty:
from the Gershomites,
Joel the chief and 130 of
his relatives;
Of the sons of Elizaphan; Shemaiah the chief, and his brethren two hundred:
from the Elizaphanites, Shemaiah the chief and 200 of his relatives;
from the Hebronites, Eliel the chief and 80 of his relatives;
Of the sons of Uzziel;
Amminadab the chief, and
his brethren an hundred and twelve.
and from the Uzzielites,
Amminadab the chief and 112 of
his relatives.
So the Levites appointed Heman the son of
Joel; and of
his brethren,
Asaph the son of Berechiah; and of the sons of Merari their brethren,
Ethan the son of Kushaiah;
So the Levites appointed Heman son of
Joel; from
his brothers,
Asaph son of Berechiah; from their brothers the Merarites,
Ethan son of Kushaiah;
Then on that day David delivered first this
psalm to
thank the LORD into the hand of
Asaph and
his brethren.
On that day David first committed to
Asaph and
his brothers this song of
thanksgiving to the LORD:
Give
thanks unto the LORD, call upon
his name, make known
his deeds among the people.
“Give
thanks to the LORD; call upon
His name; make known
His deeds among the nations.
Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all
his wondrous works.
Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; tell of all His wonders.
Glory ye in
his holy name: let the heart of them
rejoice that seek the LORD.
Glory in
His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD
rejoice.
Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually.
Seek out the LORD and His strength; seek His face always.
Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;
Remember the wonders He has done, His marvels, and the judgments He has pronounced,
O ye seed of Israel his servant, ye children of Jacob, his chosen ones.
O offspring of His servant Israel, O sons of Jacob, His chosen ones.
He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth.
He is the LORD our God; His judgments carry throughout the earth.
Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations;
Remember
His covenant
forever, the word He ordained for a thousand generations—
Even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac;
the covenant He made with Abraham, and the oath He
swore to Isaac.
Sing unto the LORD, all the earth;
shew forth from day to day
his salvation.
Sing to the LORD, all the earth.
Proclaim His salvation day after day.
Declare his glory among the heathen; his marvellous works among all nations.
Declare His glory among the nations, His wonderful deeds among all peoples.
Glory and honour are in
his presence; strength and
gladness are in
his place.
Splendor and majesty are before Him; strength and joy fill
His dwelling.
Give unto the LORD the glory due unto
his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of
holiness.
Ascribe to the LORD the glory due
His name; bring an offering and come before Him. Worship the LORD in the
splendor of
His holiness;
O give
thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for
his mercy endureth for ever.
Give
thanks to the LORD, for He is good;
His loving devotion endures
forever.
So he left there before the ark of the covenant of the LORD
Asaph and
his brethren, to minister before the ark continually, as every day’s work required:
So David left
Asaph and
his brothers there before the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to minister there regularly according to the daily requirements,
along with Obed-
edom and
his sixty-eight relatives. Obed-
edom son of
Jeduthun, and also Hosah, were to be gatekeepers.
And
Zadok the priest, and
his brethren the priests, before the tabernacle of the LORD in the high place that was at
Gibeon,
And David left
Zadok the priest and
his fellow priests before the tabernacle of the LORD at the high place in
Gibeon And with them Heman and
Jeduthun, and the rest that were chosen, who were expressed by name, to give
thanks to the LORD, because
his mercy endureth for ever;
With them were Heman,
Jeduthun, and the rest of those chosen and designated by name to give
thanks to the LORD, for “
His loving devotion endures
forever.”
And all the people departed every man to
his house: and David returned to
bless his house.
Then all the people departed for their homes, and David returned home to
bless his household.
Now it came to pass, as David sat in
his house, that David said to
Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in an house of cedars, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD remaineth under curtains.
After David had settled into
his palace, he said to
Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of
cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the LORD is under a tent.”
And it shall come to pass, when thy days be
expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish
his kingdom.
And when your days are fulfilled and you go to be with your fathers, I will raise up your
descendant after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish
his kingdom.
He shall build me an house, and I will
stablish his throne for ever.
He will build a house for Me, and I will establish
his throne
forever.
I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee:
I will be his Father, and he will be My son. And I will never remove My loving devotion from him as I removed it from your predecessor.
But I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom for ever: and
his throne shall be established for
evermore.
But I will set him over My house and My kingdom
forever, and
his throne will be established
forever.”
And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to
redeem to be
his own people, to make thee a name of greatness and terribleness, by driving out nations from before thy people, whom thou hast redeemed out of Egypt?
And who is like Your people Israel—the one nation on earth whom God went out to
redeem as a people for Himself? You made a name for
Yourself through great and
awesome wonders by driving out nations from before Your people, whom You redeemed from Egypt.
Therefore now, LORD, let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever, and do as thou hast said.
And now, O LORD, let the word You have spoken concerning Your servant and
his house be established
forever. Do as You have promised,
For thou, O my God, hast told thy servant that thou
wilt build him an house: therefore thy servant hath found in
his heart to pray before thee.
For You, my God, have revealed to Your servant that You will build a house for him. Therefore Your servant has found the courage to pray before You.
And David
smote Hadarezer king of Zobah unto
Hamath, as he went to
stablish his dominion by the river Euphrates.
As far as
Hamath, David also defeated King Hadadezer of Zobah, who had marched out to establish
his dominion along the Euphrates River.
He sent Hadoram
his son to king David, to
enquire of
his welfare, and to
congratulate him, because he had fought against Hadarezer, and
smitten him; (for Hadarezer had war with Tou;) and with him all manner of vessels of gold and silver and brass.
he sent
his son Hadoram to
greet King David and
bless him for fighting and defeating Hadadezer, who had been at war with Tou. Hadoram brought all kinds of articles of gold and silver and bronze,
So David reigned over all Israel, and executed judgment and justice among all his people.
Thus David reigned over all Israel and administered justice and righteousness for all his people:
Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of
Ammon died, and
his son reigned in
his stead.
Some time later, Nahash king of the
Ammonites died and was succeeded by
his son.
And David said, I will
shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because
his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning
his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of
Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.
And David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, because
his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent messengers to
console Hanun concerning
his father. But when David’s servants arrived in the land of the
Ammonites to
console him,
But the princes of the children of
Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David
doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not
his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to
spy out the land?
the princes of the
Ammonites said to Hanun, “Just because David has sent you comforters, do you really believe he is showing respect for your father? Have not
his servants come to you to
explore the land,
spy it out, and overthrow it?”
Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly
ashamed. And the king said,
Tarry at
Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
When someone came and told David about
his men, he sent messengers to meet them, since the men had been thoroughly
humiliated. The king told them, “Stay in
Jericho until your beards have grown back, and then return.”
So they
hired thirty and two thousand
chariots, and the king of Maachah and
his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of
Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.
So they
hired for themselves thirty-two thousand
chariots, as well as the king of
Maacah with
his troops, who came and camped near Medeba while the
Ammonites came from their cities and marched out for battle.
And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of
Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in
array against the children of
Ammon.
And he placed the rest of the forces under the command of
his brother
Abishai, who
arrayed them against the
Ammonites.
Be of good courage, and let us
behave ourselves
valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in
his sight.
Be strong and let us fight
bravely for our people and for the cities of our God. May the LORD do what is good in
His sight.”
So
Joab and the people that were with him drew
nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.
So
Joab and
his troops advanced to fight the Arameans, who fled before him.
And when the children of
Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before
Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then
Joab came to Jerusalem.
When the
Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they too fled before
Joab’s brother
Abishai, and they entered the city. So
Joab went back to Jerusalem.
And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became
his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of
Ammon any more.
When Hadadezer’s subjects saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became subject to him. So the Arameans were unwilling to help the
Ammonites anymore.
And David took the crown of their king from off
his head, and found it to
weigh a talent of gold, and there were precious stones in it; and it was set upon David’s head: and he brought also exceeding much
spoil out of the city.
Then David took the crown from the head of their king. It was found to
weigh a talent of gold and was set with precious stones, and it was placed on David’s head. And David took a great amount of
plunder from the city.
And he brought out the people that were in it, and cut them with saws, and with harrows of iron, and with axes. Even so dealt David with all the cities of the children of
Ammon. And David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
David brought out the people who were there and put them to work with saws, iron picks, and axes. And he did the same to all the
Ammonite cities. Then David and all
his troops returned to Jerusalem.
These were born unto the
giant in
Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of
his servants.
So these descendants of Rapha in
Gath fell at the hands of David and
his servants.
And
Joab answered, The LORD make
his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? why then
doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of
trespass to Israel?
But
Joab replied, “May the LORD multiply
His troops a hundred times over. My lord the king, are they not all servants of my lord? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?”
And David said unto
Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are
his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.
David answered
Gad, “I am deeply distressed. Please, let me fall into the hand of the LORD, for
His mercies are very great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men.”
And David lifted up
his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in
his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in
sackcloth, fell upon their faces.
When David lifted up
his eyes and saw the angel of the LORD standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in
his hand stretched out over Jerusalem, David and the elders, clothed in
sackcloth, fell facedown.
And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and
his four sons with him
hid themselves. Now Ornan was
threshing wheat.
Now Ornan was
threshing wheat when he turned and saw the angel; and
his four sons who were with him
hid themselves.
And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.
David came to Ornan, and when Ornan looked out and saw David, he left the
threshing floor and bowed facedown before David.
And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in
his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the
threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.
Ornan said to David, “My lord the king may take whatever seems good. Look, I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the
threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering—I will give it all.”
And the LORD commanded the angel; and he put up
his sword again into the
sheath thereof.
Then the LORD spoke to the angel, who put
his sword back into its
sheath.
And David said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be builded for the LORD must be exceeding
magnifical, of fame and of glory throughout all countries: I will therefore now make preparation for it. So David prepared abundantly before
his death.
And David said, “My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house to be built for the LORD must be exceedingly magnificent—famous and glorious throughout all lands. Therefore I must make preparations for it.” So David made
lavish preparations before
his death.
Then he called for Solomon his son, and charged him to build an house for the LORD God of Israel.
Then David called for
his son Solomon and
instructed him to build a house for the LORD, the God of Israel.
Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about: for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days.
But a son will be born to you who will be a man of rest. I will give him rest from all his enemies on every side; for his name will be Solomon, and I will grant to Israel peace and quiet during his reign.
He shall build an house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever.
He is the one who will build a house for My Name. He will be My son, and I will be
his Father. And I will establish the throne of
his kingdom over Israel
forever.’
David also commanded all the princes of Israel to help Solomon his son, saying,
Then David ordered all the leaders of Israel to help his son Solomon:
Is not the LORD your God with you? and hath he not given you rest on every side? for he hath given the inhabitants of the land into mine hand; and the land is subdued before the LORD, and before his people.
“Is not the LORD your God with you, and has He not granted you rest on every side? For He has given the inhabitants of the land into my hand, and the land has been subdued before the LORD and His people.
So when David was old and full of days, he made Solomon his son king over Israel.
When David was old and full of years, he
installed his son Solomon as king over Israel.
The sons of Amram; Aaron and Moses: and Aaron was separated, that he should
sanctify the most holy things, he and
his sons for ever, to burn incense before the LORD, to minister unto him, and to
bless in
his name for ever.
The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. Aaron and
his descendants were set apart
forever to
consecrate the most holy things, to burn incense before the LORD, to minister before Him, and to
pronounce blessings in
His name
forever.
Now concerning Moses the man of God, his sons were named of the tribe of Levi.
As for Moses the man of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi.
For David said, The LORD God of Israel hath given rest unto his people, that they may dwell in Jerusalem for ever:
For David had said, “The LORD, the God of Israel, has given rest to
His people and has come to dwell in Jerusalem
forever.
Concerning Rehabiah: of the sons of Rehabiah, the first was Isshiah.
As for Rehabiah, from his sons: The first was Isshiah.
Now the first lot came forth for
Asaph to Joseph: the second to Gedaliah, who with
his brethren and sons were twelve:
The first lot, which was for
Asaph, fell to Joseph,
his sons, and
his brothers—12 in all; the second to Gedaliah,

The
eleventh to Azareel, he,
his sons, and
his brethren, were twelve:
the
eleventh to Azarel,
his sons, and
his brothers—12 in all;
