And it came to pass, when
Rehoboam had established the kingdom, and had strengthened himself, he
forsook the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him.
After
Rehoboam had established
his sovereignty and royal power, he and all Israel with him
forsook the Law of the LORD.
Nevertheless they shall be his servants; that they may know my service, and the service of the kingdoms of the countries.
Nevertheless, they will become his servants, so that they may learn the difference between serving Me and serving the kings of other lands.”
So king
Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem, and reigned: for
Rehoboam was one and forty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put
his name there. And
his mother’s name was Naamah an Ammonitess.
Thus King
Rehoboam established himself in Jerusalem. He was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city the LORD had chosen from all the tribes of Israel in which to put
His Name.
His mother’s name was Naamah the
Ammonite.
And he did evil, because he prepared not his heart to seek the LORD.
And
Rehoboam did evil because he did not set
his heart to seek the LORD.
And
Rehoboam rested with
his fathers and was buried in the City of David. And
his son
Abijah reigned in
his place.
He reigned three years in Jerusalem.
His mother’s name also was Michaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between
Abijah and
Jeroboam.
and he reigned in Jerusalem three years.
His mother’s name was Micaiah daughter of Uriel; she was from Gibeah. And there was war between
Abijah and
Jeroboam.
Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?
Do you not know that the LORD, the God of Israel, has given the
kingship of Israel to David and
his descendants
forever by a covenant of salt?
Yet
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, is risen up, and hath rebelled against
his lord.
Yet
Jeroboam son of Nebat, a servant of Solomon son of David, rose up and rebelled against
his master.
And, behold, God himself is with us for our captain, and
his priests with sounding
trumpets to cry
alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight ye not against the LORD God of your fathers; for ye shall not
prosper.
Now behold, God Himself is with us as our head, and
His priests with their
trumpets sound the battle call against you. O children of Israel, do not fight against the LORD, the God of your fathers, for you will not succeed.”
And
Abijah and
his people
slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.
Then
Abijah and
his people struck them with a mighty blow, and 500,000 chosen men of Israel fell slain.
Neither did
Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of
Abijah: and the LORD struck him, and he died.
Jeroboam did not again recover
his power during the days of
Abijah, and the LORD struck him down and he died.
And the rest of the acts of
Abijah, and
his ways, and
his sayings, are written in the story of the prophet
Iddo.
Now the rest of the acts of
Abijah, along with
his ways and
his words, are written in the Treatise of the Prophet
Iddo.
So
Abijah slept with
his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and
Asa his son reigned in
his stead. In
his days the land was quiet ten years.
Then
Abijah rested with
his fathers and was buried in the City of David. And
his son
Asa reigned in
his place, and in
his days the land was at peace for ten years.
And
Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD
his God:
And
Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the LORD
his God.
And
Asa cried unto the LORD
his God, and said, LORD, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O LORD our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O LORD, thou art our God; let not man prevail against thee.
Then
Asa cried out to the LORD
his God: “O LORD, there is no one besides You to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, O LORD our God, for we
rely on You, and in Your name we have come against this multitude. O LORD, You are our God. Do not let a mere
mortal prevail against You.”
And
Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto
Gerar: and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before the LORD, and before
his host; and they carried away very much
spoil.
Then
Asa and
his army pursued them as far as
Gerar. The Cushites fell and could not recover, for they were
crushed before the LORD and
His army. So the people of Judah carried off a great amount of
plunder And he gathered all Judah and Benjamin, and the strangers with them out of Ephraim and
Manasseh, and out of
Simeon: for they fell to him out of Israel in abundance, when they saw that the LORD
his God was with him.
And he assembled all Judah and Benjamin, along with those from the tribes of Ephraim,
Manasseh, and
Simeon who had settled among them, for great numbers had come over to him from Israel when they saw that the LORD
his God was with him.
And also concerning Maachah the mother of
Asa the king, he removed her from being queen, because she had made an
idol in a
grove: and
Asa cut down her
idol, and stamped it, and burnt it at the
brook Kidron.
But the high places were not taken away out of Israel: nevertheless the heart of
Asa was perfect all
his days.
The high places were not removed from Israel, but
Asa’s heart was fully devoted all
his days.
And he brought into the house of God the things that his father had dedicated, and that he himself had dedicated, silver, and gold, and vessels.
And he brought into the house of God the silver and gold articles that he and his father had dedicated.
And it came to pass, when
Baasha heard it, that he left off building of
Ramah, and let
his work cease.
And
Asa in the thirty and ninth year of
his reign was diseased in
his feet, until
his disease was exceeding great: yet in
his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians.
In the thirty-ninth year of
his reign,
Asa became diseased in
his feet, and
his malady became increasingly severe. Yet even in
his illness he did not seek the LORD, but only the physicians.
And
Asa slept with
his fathers, and died in the one and
fortieth year of
his reign.
So in the forty-first year of
his reign,
Asa died and rested with
his fathers.
And they buried him in
his own
sepulchres, which he had made for himself in the city of David, and laid him in the bed which was filled with sweet odours and
divers kinds of spices prepared by the
apothecaries’ art: and they made a very great burning for him.
And he was buried in the tomb that he had cut out for himself in the City of David. They laid him on a
bier that was full of spices and various
blended perfumes; then they made a great fire in
his honor.
And
Jehoshaphat his son reigned in
his stead, and strengthened himself against Israel.
Asa’s son
Jehoshaphat reigned in
his place, and he strengthened himself against Israel.
And he placed forces in all the
fenced cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim, which
Asa his father had taken.
He stationed troops in every fortified city of Judah and put garrisons in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim that
his father
Asa had captured.
And the LORD was with
Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of
his father David, and sought not unto
Baalim;
Now the LORD was with
Jehoshaphat because he walked in the earlier ways of
his father David. He did not seek out the Baals,
But sought to the LORD God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel.
but he sought the God of his father and walked by His commandments rather than the practices of Israel.
Therefore the LORD stablished the kingdom in
his hand; and all Judah brought to
Jehoshaphat presents; and he had riches and honour in abundance.
So the LORD established the kingdom in his hand, and all Judah brought him tribute, so that he had an abundance of riches and honor.
And his heart was lifted up in the ways of the LORD: moreover he took away the high places and groves out of Judah.
And
his heart took delight in the ways of the LORD;
furthermore, he removed the high places and Asherah poles from Judah.
Also in the third year of
his reign he sent to
his princes, even to Ben-
hail, and to
Obadiah, and to
Zechariah, and to Nethaneel, and to Michaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah.
And the king of Israel called for one of
his officers, and said,
Fetch quickly Micaiah the son of Imla.
So the king of Israel called one of his officials and said, “Bring Micaiah son of Imlah at once.”
And the king of Israel and
Jehoshaphat king of Judah sat either of them on
his throne, clothed in their robes, and they sat in a void place at the entering in of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets
prophesied before them.
Dressed in royal
attire, the king of Israel and
Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on their thrones at the
threshing floor by the entrance of the gate of Samaria, with all the prophets
prophesying before them.
Then he said, I did see all Israel scattered upon the mountains, as sheep that have no
shepherd: and the LORD said, These have no master; let them return therefore every man to
his house in peace.
So Micaiah declared: “I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep without a
shepherd. And the LORD said, ‘These people have no master; let each one return home in peace.’”
Again he said, Therefore hear the word of the LORD; I saw the LORD sitting upon his throne, and all the host of heaven standing on his right hand and on his left.
Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on His throne, and all the host of heaven standing on His right and on His left.
And he said, I will go out, and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all
his prophets. And the LORD said, Thou shalt
entice him, and thou shalt also prevail: go out, and do even so.
And he replied, ‘I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all
his prophets.’ ‘You will surely
entice him and prevail,’ said the LORD. ‘Go and do it.’
Now the king of Syria had commanded the captains of the
chariots that were with him, saying, Fight ye not with small or great, save only with the king of Israel.
Now the king of
Aram had ordered
his chariot commanders, “Do not fight with
anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel.”
And a certain man drew a bow at a
venture, and
smote the king of Israel between the joints of the
harness: therefore he said to
his chariot man, Turn thine hand, that thou mayest carry me out of the host; for I am wounded.
However, a certain man drew
his bow without taking special aim, and he struck the king of Israel between the joints of
his armor. So the king said to
his charioteer, “Turn around and take me out of the battle, for I am badly wounded!”
And the battle increased that day:
howbeit the king of Israel stayed himself up in
his chariot against the Syrians until the even: and about the time of the sun going down he died.
The battle
raged throughout that day, and the king of Israel
propped himself up in
his chariot facing the Arameans until evening. And at
sunset he died.
And
Jehoshaphat the king of Judah returned to
his house in peace to Jerusalem.
When
Jehoshaphat king of Judah had returned safely to
his home in Jerusalem,
And
Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.
Jehoshaphat was
alarmed and set
his face to seek the LORD. And he proclaimed a fast throughout Judah.
And
Jehoshaphat bowed
his head with
his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD,
worshipping the LORD.
Then
Jehoshaphat bowed facedown, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down before the LORD to worship Him.
And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth,
Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe
his prophets, so shall ye
prosper.
Early in the morning they got up and left for the Wilderness of Tekoa. As they set out,
Jehoshaphat stood up and said, “Hear me, O people of Judah and Jerusalem. Believe in the LORD your God, and you will be
upheld; believe in
His prophets, and you will succeed.”
And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of
holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for
his mercy endureth for ever.
Then
Jehoshaphat consulted with the people and appointed those who would sing to the LORD and praise the
splendor of
His holiness. As they went out before the army, they were singing: “Give
thanks to the LORD, for
His loving devotion endures
forever.”
And when
Jehoshaphat and
his people came to take away the
spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they
stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering of the
spoil, it was so much.
Then
Jehoshaphat and
his people went to carry off the
plunder, and they found on the bodies an abundance of goods and valuables—more than they could carry away. They were gathering the
plunder for three days because there was so much.
So the realm of
Jehoshaphat was quiet: for
his God gave him rest round about.
Then
Jehoshaphat’s kingdom was at peace, for
his God had given him rest on every side.
And
Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem. And
his mother’s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi.
So
Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-five years.
His mother’s name was Azubah daughter of Shilhi.
And he walked in the way of
Asa his father, and departed not from it, doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD.
And
Jehoshaphat walked in the way of
his father
Asa and did not turn away from it; he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD.
Now
Jehoshaphat slept with
his fathers, and was buried with
his fathers in the city of David. And Jehoram
his son reigned in
his stead.
And
Jehoshaphat rested with
his fathers and was buried with them in the City of David. And
his son Jehoram reigned in
his place.
Now when Jehoram was risen up to the kingdom of
his father, he strengthened himself, and
slew all
his brethren with the sword, and
divers also of the princes of Israel.
When Jehoram had established himself over his father’s kingdom, he strengthened himself by putting to the sword all his brothers along with some of the princes of Israel.
Howbeit the LORD would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to
his sons for ever.
Yet the LORD was unwilling to destroy the house of David, because of the covenant He had made with David, and since He had promised to maintain a lamp for David and
his descendants
forever.
In his days the Edomites revolted from under the dominion of Judah, and made themselves a king.
In the days of Jehoram,
Edom rebelled against the hand of Judah and appointed their own king.
Then Jehoram went forth with
his princes, and all
his chariots with him: and he rose up by night, and
smote the Edomites which compassed him in, and the captains of the
chariots.
So Jehoram crossed into
Edom with
his officers and all
his chariots. When the Edomites surrounded him and
his chariot commanders, he rose up and attacked by night.
So the Edomites revolted from under the hand of Judah unto this day. The same time also did
Libnah revolt from under
his hand; because he had
forsaken the LORD God of
his fathers.
So to this day
Edom has been in rebellion against the hand of Judah. Likewise,
Libnah rebelled against
his rule at the same time, because Jehoram had
forsaken the LORD, the God of
his fathers.
And they came up into Judah, and
brake into it, and carried away all the substance that was found in the king’s house, and
his sons also, and
his wives; so that there was never a son left him, save
Jehoahaz, the youngest of
his sons.
So they went to war against Judah, invaded it, and carried off all the possessions found in the king’s palace, along with
his sons and wives; not a son was left to him except
Jehoahaz,
his youngest.
And after all this the LORD
smote him in
his bowels with an incurable disease.
After all this, the LORD
afflicted Jehoram with an incurable disease of the
bowels.
And it came to pass, that in process of time, after the end of two years,
his bowels fell out by reason of
his sickness: so he died of
sore diseases. And
his people made no burning for him, like the burning of
his fathers.
This continued day after day until two full years had passed. Finally, his intestines came out because of his disease, and he died in severe pain. And his people did not make a fire in his honor as they had done for his fathers.
And the inhabitants of Jerusalem made
Ahaziah his youngest son king in
his stead: for the band of men that came with the Arabians to the camp had slain all the eldest. So
Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah reigned.
Then the people of Jerusalem made
Ahaziah, the youngest son of Jehoram, king in
his place, since the raiders who had come into the camp with the Arabs had killed all the older sons. So
Ahaziah son of Jehoram became king of Judah.
Forty and two years old was
Ahaziah when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem.
His mother’s name also was
Athaliah the daughter of Omri.
Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem one year.
His mother’s name was
Athaliah, the
granddaughter of Omri.
He also walked in the ways of the house of
Ahab: for
his mother was
his counsellor to do wickedly.
Ahaziah also walked in the ways of the house of
Ahab, for
his mother was
his counselor in wickedness.
Wherefore he did evil in the sight of the LORD like the house of
Ahab: for they were
his counsellors after the death of
his father to
his destruction.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, as the house of
Ahab had done, for to
his destruction they were
his counselors after the death of
his father.
And he sought
Ahaziah: and they caught him, (for he was
hid in Samaria,) and brought him to
Jehu: and when they had slain him, they buried him: Because, said they, he is the son of
Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all
his heart. So the house of
Ahaziah had no power to keep still the kingdom.
Then
Jehu looked for
Ahaziah, and
Jehu’s soldiers captured him while he was hiding in Samaria. So
Ahaziah was brought to
Jehu and put to death. They buried him, for they said, “He is the grandson of
Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all
his heart.” So no one was left from the house of
Ahaziah with the strength to rule the kingdom.
But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took
Joash the son of
Ahaziah, and
stole him from among the king’s sons that were slain, and put him and
his nurse in a
bedchamber. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of king Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest, (for she was the sister of
Ahaziah,)
hid him from
Athaliah, so that she
slew him not.
But Jehoshabeath daughter of King Jehoram took
Joash son of
Ahaziah and
stole him away from among the sons of the king who were being murdered, and she put him and
his nurse in a
bedroom. Because Jehoshabeath, the daughter of King Jehoram and the wife of Jehoiada the priest, was
Ahaziah’s sister, she
hid Joash from
Athaliah so that she could not kill him.
And the Levites shall compass the king round about, every man with
his weapons in
his hand; and
whosoever else cometh into the house, he shall be put to death: but be ye with the king when he cometh in, and when he goeth out.
The Levites must
surround the king with weapons in hand, and
anyone who enters the temple must be put to death. You must stay close to the king wherever he goes.”
So the Levites and all Judah did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest had commanded, and took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that were to go out on the sabbath: for Jehoiada the priest dismissed not the courses.
So the Levites and all Judah did everything that Jehoiada the priest had ordered. Each of them took his men—those coming on duty on the Sabbath and those going off duty—for Jehoiada the priest had not released any of the divisions.
And he set all the people, every man having his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the temple to the left side of the temple, along by the altar and the temple, by the king round about.
He stationed all the troops, with their weapons in hand, surrounding the king by the altar and the temple, from the south side to the north side of the temple.
Then they brought out the king’s son, and put upon him the crown, and gave him the testimony, and made him king. And Jehoiada and
his sons
anointed him, and said, God save the king.
Then Jehoiada and
his sons brought out the king’s son, put the crown on him, presented him with the Testimony, and proclaimed him king. They
anointed him and
shouted, “Long live the king!”
And she looked, and, behold, the king stood at
his pillar at the entering in, and the princes and the
trumpets by the king: and all the people of the land
rejoiced, and sounded with
trumpets, also the singers with instruments of musick, and such as taught to sing praise. Then
Athaliah rent her clothes, and said, Treason, Treason.
And she looked out and saw the king standing by
his pillar at the entrance. The officers and trumpeters were beside the king, and all the people of the land were
rejoicing and blowing
trumpets, while the singers with musical instruments were leading the praises. Then
Athaliah tore her clothes and
screamed, “Treason, treason!”
Then all the people went to the house of
Baal, and
brake it down, and
brake his altars and
his images in pieces, and
slew Mattan the priest of
Baal before the altars.
So all the people went to the temple of
Baal and
tore it down. They
smashed the altars and idols to pieces and killed Mattan the priest of
Baal in front of the altars.
Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem.
His mother’s name also was Zibiah of Beer-
sheba.
Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem forty years.
His mother’s name was Zibiah; she was from
Beersheba.
And it came to pass after this, that
Joash was minded to repair the house of the LORD.
Some time later,
Joash set
his heart on repairing the house of the LORD.
Now it came to pass, that at what time the chest was brought unto the king’s office by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s
scribe and the high priest’s officer came and
emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to
his place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.
Whenever the chest was brought by the Levites to the king’s overseers and they saw that there was a large amount of money, the royal
scribe and the officer of the high priest would come and empty the chest and carry it back to its place. They did this daily and gathered the money in abundance.
So the workmen wrought, and the work was perfected by them, and they set the house of God in his state, and strengthened it.
So the workmen labored, and in their hands the repair work progressed. They restored the house of God according to its specifications, and they
reinforced it.
And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both toward God, and toward his house.
And Jehoiada was buried with the kings in the City of David, because he had done what was good in Israel for God and His temple.
Thus
Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada
his father had done to him, but
slew his son. And when he died, he said, The LORD look upon it, and require it.
Thus King
Joash failed to remember the kindness that
Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had extended to him. Instead,
Joash killed Jehoiada’s son. As he lay dying,
Zechariah said, “May the LORD see this and call you to account.”
And when they were departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases,)
his own servants
conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and
slew him on
his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the
sepulchres of the kings.
And when the Arameans had withdrawn, they left
Joash severely wounded.
His own servants
conspired against him for
shedding the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him on
his bed. So he died and was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
Now concerning
his sons, and the greatness of the burdens laid upon him, and the repairing of the house of God, behold, they are written in the story of the book of the kings. And
Amaziah his son reigned in
his stead.
The accounts of the sons of
Joash, as well as the many pronouncements about him and about the restoration of the house of God, are indeed written in the Treatise of the Book of the Kings. And
his son
Amaziah reigned in
his place.
Amaziah was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And
his mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.
Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years.
His mother’s name was Jehoaddan; she was from Jerusalem.
Now it came to pass, when the kingdom was established to him, that he
slew his servants that had killed the king
his father.
As soon as the kingdom was firmly in
his grasp,
Amaziah executed the servants who had murdered
his father the king.
But he
slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for
his own sin.
Yet he did not put their sons to death, but acted according to what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses, where the LORD commanded: “Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.”
And
Amaziah strengthened himself, and led forth
his people, and went to the valley of salt, and
smote of the children of
Seir ten thousand.
Amaziah, however, summoned
his strength and led
his troops to the Valley of Salt, where he struck down 10,000 men of
Seir,
Now it came to pass, after that
Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of
Seir, and set them up to be
his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them.
When
Amaziah returned from the slaughter of the Edomites, he brought back the gods of the Seirites, set them up as
his own gods, bowed before them, and burned sacrifices to them.
And Judah was put to the worse before Israel, and they fled every man to his tent.
And Judah was routed before Israel, and every man fled to his own home.
And they brought him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
They carried him back on horses and buried him with his fathers in the City of Judah.
Then all the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in the room of
his father
Amaziah.
All the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in place of
his father
Amaziah.
He built Eloth, and restored it to Judah, after that the king
slept with
his fathers.
Uzziah was the one who rebuilt Eloth and restored it to Judah after King
Amaziah rested with
his fathers.
Sixteen years old was Uzziah when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty and two years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Jecoliah of Jerusalem.
Uzziah was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-two years. His mother’s name was Jecoliah; she was from Jerusalem.
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that
his father
Amaziah did.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as
his father
Amaziah had done.
And the
Ammonites gave gifts to Uzziah: and
his name spread abroad even to the entering in of Egypt; for he strengthened himself exceedingly.
The
Ammonites brought tribute to Uzziah, and
his fame spread as far as the border of Egypt, for he had become exceedingly powerful.
And under their hand was an army, three hundred thousand and seven thousand and five hundred, that made war with mighty power, to help the king against the enemy.
Under their authority was an army of 307,500 trained for war, a powerful force to support the king against his enemies.
And he made in Jerusalem engines, invented by
cunning men, to be on the towers and upon the bulwarks, to shoot arrows and great stones
withal. And
his name spread far abroad; for he was marvellously helped, till he was strong.
And in Jerusalem he made
skillfully designed devices to shoot arrows and
catapult large stones from the towers and corners. So
his fame spread far and wide, for he was helped
tremendously so that he became powerful.
But when he was strong,
his heart was lifted up to
his destruction: for he
transgressed against the LORD
his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense.
But when Uzziah grew powerful,
his arrogance led to
his own destruction. He was unfaithful to the LORD
his God, for he entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense.
Then Uzziah was
wroth, and had a
censer in
his hand to burn incense: and while he was
wroth with the priests, the
leprosy even rose up in
his forehead before the priests in the house of the LORD, from beside the incense altar.
Uzziah, with a
censer in
his hand to offer incense, was
enraged. But while he
raged against the priests in their presence in the house of the LORD before the altar of incense,
leprosy broke out on
his forehead.
And
Azariah the chief priest, and all the priests, looked upon him, and, behold, he was
leprous in
his forehead, and they thrust him out from thence;
yea, himself hasted also to go out, because the LORD had
smitten him.
And Uzziah the king was a
leper unto the day of
his death, and dwelt in a several house, being a
leper; for he was cut off from the house of the LORD: and Jotham
his son was over the king’s house, judging the people of the land.
So King Uzziah was a
leper until the day of
his death. He lived in
isolation,
leprous and cut off from the house of the LORD, while
his son Jotham had charge of the royal palace to
govern the people of the land.
So Uzziah
slept with
his fathers, and they buried him with
his fathers in the field of the burial which belonged to the kings; for they said, He is a
leper: and Jotham
his son reigned in
his stead.
And Uzziah rested with
his fathers and was buried near them in a field of burial that belonged to the kings; for the people said, “He was a
leper.” And
his son Jotham reigned in
his place.
Jotham was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem.
His mother’s name also was Jerushah, the daughter of
Zadok.
Jotham was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen years.
His mother’s name was Jerushah daughter of
Zadok.
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that
his father Uzziah did:
howbeit he entered not into the temple of the LORD. And the people did yet corruptly.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as
his father Uzziah had done. In addition, he did not enter the temple of the LORD. But the people still
behaved corruptly.
So Jotham became mighty, because he prepared his ways before the LORD his God.
So Jotham grew powerful because he ordered his ways before the LORD his God.
