And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and
hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Take all the
leaders of the people and
execute them in broad
daylight before the LORD, so that His fierce anger may turn away from Israel.”
Now the name of the
Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.
The name of the
Israelite who was slain with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, the
leader of a Simeonite family.
For they
vex you with their wiles,
wherewith they have
beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of
Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor’s sake.
For they
assailed you
deceitfully when they
seduced you in the matter of Peor and their sister Cozbi, the daughter of the Midianite
leader, the woman who was killed on the day the plague came because of Peor.”
And they stood before Moses, and before
Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,
the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, stood before Moses,
Eleazar the priest, the
leaders, and the whole congregation, and said,
And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter.
Furthermore, you shall say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and
leaves no son, you are to transfer his inheritance to his daughter.
Which may go out before them, and which may go in before them, and which may
lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the LORD be not as sheep which have no
shepherd.
who will go out and come in before them, and who will
lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the LORD will not be like sheep without a
shepherd.”
And Moses, and
Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went forth to meet them without the camp.
And Moses,
Eleazar the priest, and all the
leaders of the congregation went to meet them outside the camp.
And
purify all your
raiment, and all that is made of skins, and all work of goats’ hair, and all things made of wood.
And
purify every garment and
leather good, everything made of goat’s hair, and every article of wood.”
Only the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead,
Only the gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, and lead—
The children of
Gad and the children of
Reuben came and spake unto Moses, and to
Eleazar the priest, and unto the princes of the congregation, saying,
So the Gadites and Reubenites came to Moses,
Eleazar the priest, and the
leaders of the congregation, and said,
For if ye turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and ye shall destroy all this people.
For if you turn away from following Him, He will once again leave this people in the wilderness, and you will be the cause of their destruction.”
So concerning them Moses commanded
Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of
Nun, and the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel:
So Moses gave orders about them to
Eleazar the priest, to Joshua son of
Nun, and to the family
leaders of the tribes of Israel.
These are the journeys of the children of Israel, which went forth out of the land of Egypt with their armies under the hand of Moses and Aaron.
These are the journeys of the Israelites when they came out of the land of Egypt by their divisions under the
leadership of Moses and Aaron.
And ye shall take one prince of every tribe, to divide the land by inheritance.
Appoint one
leader from each tribe to distribute the land.
And the prince of the tribe of the children of
Dan, Bukki the son of Jogli.
Bukki son of Jogli, a
leader from the tribe of
Dan;
The prince of the children of Joseph, for the tribe of the children of
Manasseh, Hanniel the son of
Ephod.
Hanniel son of
Ephod, a
leader from the tribe of
Manasseh son of Joseph;
And the prince of the tribe of the children of Ephraim, Kemuel the son of Shiphtan.
Kemuel son of Shiphtan, a leader from the tribe of Ephraim;
And the prince of the tribe of the children of
Zebulun, Elizaphan the son of Parnach.
Eli-zaphan son of Parnach, a
leader from the tribe of
Zebulun;
And the prince of the tribe of the children of
Issachar, Paltiel the son of Azzan.
Paltiel son of Azzan, a
leader from the tribe of
Issachar;
And the prince of the tribe of the children of Asher, Ahihud the son of Shelomi.
Ahihud son of Shelomi, a leader from the tribe of Asher;
And the prince of the tribe of the children of
Naphtali, Pedahel the son of Ammihud.
and Pedahel son of Ammihud, a
leader from the tribe of
Naphtali.”
And the chief fathers of the families of the children of
Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of
Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near, and spake before Moses, and before the princes, the chief fathers of the children of Israel:
Now the family heads of the clan of
Gilead son of Machir son of
Manasseh, one of the clans of Joseph, approached Moses and the
leaders who were the heads of the
Israelite families and addressed them,
Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.
Choose for
yourselves wise, understanding, and respected men from each of your tribes, and I will
appoint them as your
leaders.”
So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over
fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes.
So I took the
leaders of your tribes, wise and respected men, and appointed them as
leaders over you—as commanders of thousands, of hundreds, of
fifties, and of tens, and as officers for your tribes.
Specially the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in
Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may
learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.
The day you stood before the LORD your God at
Horeb, the LORD said to me, “Gather the people before Me to hear My words, so that they may
learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach them to their children.”
And the LORD shall
scatter you among the nations, and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen,
whither the LORD shall
lead you.
Then the LORD will
scatter you among the peoples, and only a few of you will
survive among the nations to which the LORD will drive you.
And Moses called all Israel, and said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep, and do them.
Then Moses summoned all Israel and said to them: Hear, O Israel, the statutes and ordinances that I declare in your hearing this day. Learn them and observe them carefully.
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not
leave anyone unpunished who takes His name in vain.
And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he
sware unto our fathers.
But He brought us out from there to
lead us in and give us the land that He had
sworn to our fathers.
Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and
blot out their name from under heaven: and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they.
Leave Me alone, so that I may destroy them and
blot out their name from under heaven. Then I will make you into a nation mightier and greater than they are.”
And thou shalt eat before the LORD thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the
tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest
learn to fear the LORD thy God always.
And you are to eat a tenth of your grain, new wine, and oil, and the
firstborn of your herds and flocks, in the presence of the LORD your God at the place He will choose as a dwelling for His Name, so that you may
learn to fear the LORD your God always.
And it shall be, if he say unto thee, I will not go away from thee; because he loveth thee and thine house, because he is well with thee;
But if your servant says to you, ‘I do not want to leave you,’ because he loves you and your household and is well off with you,
Thou shalt eat no
leavened bread with it; seven days shalt thou eat
unleavened bread
therewith, even the bread of
affliction; for thou camest forth out of the land of Egypt in
haste: that thou mayest remember the day when thou camest forth out of the land of Egypt all the days of thy life.
You must not eat
leavened bread with it; for seven days you are to eat with it
unleavened bread, the bread of
affliction, because you left the land of Egypt in
haste—so that you may remember for the rest of your life the day you left the land of Egypt.
And there shall be no
leavened bread seen with thee in all thy coast seven days; neither shall there any thing of the flesh, which thou sacrificedst the first day at even, remain all night until the morning.
No
leaven is to be found in all your land for seven days, and none of the meat you sacrifice in the evening of the first day shall remain until morning.
And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them:
It is to remain with him, and he is to read from it all the days of his life, so that he may learn to fear the LORD his God by carefully observing all the words of this instruction and these statutes.
When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
When you enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not
imitate the
detestable ways of the nations there.
And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall make captains of the armies to lead the people.
When the officers have finished addressing the army, they are to
appoint commanders to
lead it.
But of the cities of these people, which the LORD thy God
doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:
However, in the cities of the nations that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, you must not leave alive anything that breathes.
His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise
bury him that day; (for he that is
hanged is
accursed of God;) that thy land be not
defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.
you must not
leave the body on the tree overnight, but you must be sure to
bury him that day, because
anyone who is hung on a tree is under God’s
curse. You must not
defile the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
If there be among you any man, that is not clean by reason of uncleanness that chanceth him by night, then shall he go abroad out of the camp, he shall not come within the camp:
If any man among you becomes unclean because of a
nocturnal emission, he must
leave the camp and stay outside.
And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man’s wife.
If, after leaving his house, she goes and becomes another man’s wife,
You will become an object of
horror,
scorn, and
ridicule among all the nations to which the LORD will drive you.
And he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of thy land, until thou be destroyed: which also shall not
leave thee either corn, wine, or oil, or the increase of thy
kine, or flocks of thy sheep, until he have destroyed thee.
They will eat the offspring of your
livestock and the produce of your land until you are destroyed. They will
leave you no grain or new wine or oil, no
calves of your herds or lambs of your flocks, until they have caused you to perish.
So that the man that is tender among you, and very delicate, his eye shall be evil toward his brother, and toward the wife of his
bosom, and toward the
remnant of his children which he shall
leave:
The most gentle and refined man among you will
begrudge his brother, the wife he embraces, and the rest of his children who have survived,
Ye stand this day all of you before the LORD your God; your captains of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, with all the men of Israel,
All of you are standing
today before the LORD your God—you
leaders of tribes, elders, officials, and all the men of Israel,
Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that
doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor
forsake thee.
Be strong and
courageous; do not be afraid or
terrified of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you; He will never
leave you nor
forsake you.”
And the LORD, he it is that
doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither
forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.
The LORD Himself goes before you; He will be with you. He will never
leave you nor
forsake you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.”
Gather the people together, men, and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God, and observe to do all the words of this law:
Assemble the people—men, women, children, and the foreigners within your gates—so that they may
listen and
learn to fear the LORD your God and to follow carefully all the words of this law.
And that their children, which have not known any thing, may hear, and
learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as ye live in the land
whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.
Then their children who do not know the law will
listen and
learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as you live in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”
So the LORD alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him.
The LORD alone led him, and no foreign god was with him.
I will make mine arrows
drunk with blood, and my sword shall
devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the
captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy.
I will make My arrows
drunk with blood, while My sword devours flesh— the blood of the slain and
captives, the heads of the enemy
leaders.”
And he was king in
Jeshurun, when the heads of the people and the tribes of Israel were gathered together.
So the LORD became King in
Jeshurun when the
leaders of the people gathered, when the tribes of Israel came together.
And he provided the first part for himself, because there, in a portion of the
lawgiver, was he seated; and he came with the heads of the people, he executed the justice of the LORD, and his judgments with Israel.
He chose the best land for himself, because a ruler’s portion was reserved for him there. He came with the leaders of the people; he administered the LORD’s justice and His ordinances for Israel.”
There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor
forsake thee.
No one shall stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so will I be with you; I will never
leave you nor
forsake you.
And command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, and ye shall carry them over with you, and
leave them in the
lodging place, where ye shall
lodge this night.
and command them: ‘Take up for
yourselves twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan where the priests were standing, carry them with you, and set them down in the place where you
spend the night.’”
And there was not a man left in
Ai or
Bethel, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.
Not a man was left in
Ai or
Bethel who did not go out after Israel,
leaving the city wide open while they pursued Israel.
And they went to Joshua unto the camp at
Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a
league with us.
They went to Joshua in the camp at
Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, “We have come from a distant land; please make a treaty with us.”
And the men of Israel said unto the
Hivites,
Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a
league with you?
But the men of Israel said to the
Hivites, “Perhaps you dwell near us. How can we make a treaty with you?”
Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take
victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a
league with us.
So the elders and inhabitants of our land told us, ‘Take provisions for your journey; go to meet them and say to them: We are your servants. Please make a treaty with us.’
And Joshua made peace with them, and made a
league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation
sware unto them.
And Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the
leaders of the congregation
swore an oath to them.
And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.
Three days after they had made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites learned that they were neighbors, living among them.
And the children of Israel
smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had
sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation
murmured against the princes.
But the Israelites did not attack them, because the
leaders of the congregation had
sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. And the whole congregation grumbled against the
leaders.
But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have
sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.
All the
leaders answered, “We have
sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we cannot touch them.
And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.
They continued, “Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers for the whole congregation.” So the leaders kept their promise.
And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of
Jericho.
On that day Joshua captured Makkedah and put it to the sword, along with its king. He devoted to destruction
everyone in the city,
leaving no survivors. So he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of
Jericho.
And the LORD delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he
smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of
Jericho.
And the LORD also delivered that city and its king into the hand of Israel, and Joshua put all the people to the sword,
leaving no survivors. And he did to the king of
Libnah as he had done to the king of
Jericho.
Then Horam king of
Gezer came up to help
Lachish; and Joshua
smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.
At that time Horam king of
Gezer went to help
Lachish, but Joshua struck him down along with his people,
leaving no survivors.
And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they
smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to
Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to
Libnah, and to her king.
And they captured Debir, its king, and all its villages. They put them to the sword and devoted to destruction
everyone in the city,
leaving no survivors. Joshua did to Debir and its king as he had done to
Hebron and as he had done to
Libnah and its king.
So Joshua
smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the
vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded.
So Joshua conquered the whole region—the hill country, the Negev, the foothills, and the slopes, together with all their kings—leaving no survivors. He devoted to destruction everything that breathed, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.
And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who
smote them, and
chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephoth-
maim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they
smote them, until they left them none remaining.
and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who struck them down and pursued them all the way to Greater
Sidon and Misrephoth-
maim, and eastward as far as the Valley of Mizpeh. They struck them down,
leaving no survivors.
As the LORD commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses.
As the LORD had commanded His servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua. That is what Joshua did, leaving nothing undone of all that the LORD had commanded Moses.
And they came near before
Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of
Nun, and before the princes, saying, The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brethren. Therefore according to the commandment of the LORD he gave them an inheritance among the brethren of their father.
They approached
Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of
Nun, and the
leaders, and said, “The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers.” So Joshua gave them an inheritance among their father’s brothers, in keeping with the command of the LORD.
And with him ten princes, of each chief house a prince throughout all the tribes of Israel; and each one was an head of the house of their fathers among the thousands of Israel.
With him they sent ten chiefs—one family leader from each tribe of Israel, each the head of a family among the clans of Israel.
Then the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh answered, and said unto the heads of the thousands of Israel,
Then the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh answered the
leaders of the clans of Israel:
And
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of
Reuben, and from the children of
Gad, out of the land of
Gilead, unto the land of
Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.
Then
Phinehas son of
Eleazar the priest, together with the other
leaders, returned to the Israelites in the land of
Canaan and brought back a report regarding the Reubenites and Gadites in the land of
Gilead.
And Joshua called for all Israel, and for their elders, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers, and said unto them, I am old and
stricken in age:
he summoned all Israel, including its elders, leaders, judges, and officers. “I am old and well along in years,” he said,
And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to
Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.
Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at
Shechem. He summoned the elders,
leaders, judges, and officers of Israel, and they presented themselves before God.
And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?
and you are not to make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall
tear down their altars.’ Yet you have not obeyed My voice. What is this you have done?
Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;
if only to teach warfare to the subsequent generations of Israel, especially to those who had not known it formerly:
And it came to pass, when he was come, that he
blew a
trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.
On arriving in Seirah, he
blew the ram’s horn throughout the hill country of Ephraim. The Israelites came down with him from the hills, and he became their
leader.
And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.
“Follow me,” he told them, “for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they followed him down and seized the fords of the Jordan
leading to Moab, and did not allow
anyone to cross over.
Praise ye the LORD for the
avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves.
“When the princes take the
lead in Israel, when the people
volunteer,
bless the LORD.
And he said unto him, Oh my Lord,
wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in
Manasseh, and I am the
least in my father’s house.
“Please, my Lord,”
Gideon replied, “how can I save Israel? Indeed, my clan is the weakest in
Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father’s house.”
Now therefore go to,
proclaim in the ears of the people, saying,
Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount
Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.
Now, therefore,
proclaim in the hearing of the people: ‘
Whoever is fearful and
trembling may turn back and
leave Mount
Gilead.’” So twenty-two thousand of them turned back, but ten thousand remained.
And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?
But the leaders of Succoth asked, “Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your possession, that we should give bread to your army?”
And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and enquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even
threescore and seventeen men.
There he captured a young man of Succoth and
interrogated him. The young man wrote down for him the names of the seventy-seven
leaders and elders of Succoth.
Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of
Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are
threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.
“Please ask all the
leaders of
Shechem, ‘Is it better for you that seventy men, all the sons of Jerubbaal, rule over you, or just one man?’ Remember that I am your own flesh and blood.”
And his mother’s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of
Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow
Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.
And when his mother’s brothers spoke all these words about him in the presence of all the
leaders of
Shechem, their hearts were inclined to follow
Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.”
And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount
Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and
cried, and said unto them,
Hearken unto me, ye men of
Shechem, that God may
hearken unto you.
But the olive tree said unto them, Should I
leave my fatness,
wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
But the olive tree replied, ‘Should I stop giving my oil that honors both God and man, to hold
sway over the trees?’
And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
But the
grapevine replied, ‘Should I stop giving my wine that cheers both God and man, to hold
sway over the trees?’
And ye are risen up against my father’s house this day, and have slain his sons,
threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made
Abimelech, the son of his
maidservant, king over the men of
Shechem, because he is your brother;)
but you have risen up against my father’s house this day and killed his seventy sons on a single stone, and you have made
Abimelech, the son of his
maidservant, king over the
leaders of
Shechem because he is your brother—
That the cruelty done to the
threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon
Abimelech their brother, which
slew them; and upon the men of
Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.
in order that the crime against the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come to justice and their blood be
avenged on their brother
Abimelech and on the
leaders of
Shechem, who had helped him murder his brothers.
And the men of
Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they
robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told
Abimelech.
And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to
Shechem: and the men of
Shechem put their confidence in him.
Meanwhile, Gaal son of Ebed came with his brothers and crossed into
Shechem, and the
leaders of
Shechem put their confidence in him.
