These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,
This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made them.
And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every
herb of the field before it grew: for the
LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.
Now no
shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth, nor had any plant of the field
sprouted; for the
LORD God had not yet sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to
cultivate the ground.
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.
And the
LORD God planted a garden eastward in
Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
And the
LORD God planted a garden in
Eden, in the east, where He placed the man He had formed.
And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
Out of the ground the LORD God gave growth to every tree that is pleasing to the eye and good for food. And in the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
And the
LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of
Eden to dress it and to keep it.
Then the
LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of
Eden to
cultivate and keep it.
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
And the LORD God commanded him, “You may eat freely from every tree of the garden,
And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
The LORD God also said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make for him a suitable helper.”
And out of the ground the
LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and
whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.
And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and He brought them to the man to see what he would name each one. And whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.
And the
LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and he
slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
So the
LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, and while he
slept, He took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the area with flesh.
And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
And from the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man, He made a woman and brought her to him.
Now the serpent was more
subtil than any beast of the field which the
LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman,
Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
Now the serpent was more
crafty than any beast of the field that the
LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’”
And they heard the voice of the
LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife
hid themselves from the presence of the
LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
Then the man and his wife heard the voice of the
LORD God walking in the garden in the
breeze of the day, and they
hid themselves from the presence of the
LORD God among the trees of the garden.
And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
But the LORD God called out to the man, “Where are you?”
And he said, Who told thee that thou
wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree,
whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
“Who told you that you were naked?” asked the LORD God. “Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
And the
LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent
beguiled me, and I did eat.
Then the
LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” “The serpent
deceived me,” she replied, “and I
ate.”
And the
LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art
cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy
belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
So the
LORD God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this,
cursed are you above all
livestock and every beast of the field! On your
belly will you go, and dust you will eat, all the days of your life.
Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
And the LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them.
And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
Then the
LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil. And now, lest he reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live
forever...”
Therefore the
LORD God sent him forth from the garden of
Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
Therefore the
LORD God banished him from the Garden of
Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
And Adam knew
Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare
Cain, and said, I have
gotten a man from the
LORD.
And Adam had relations with his wife
Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to
Cain. “With the help of the
LORD I have brought forth a man,” she said.
And in process of time it came to pass, that
Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the
LORD.
So in the course of time,
Cain brought some of the fruit of the soil as an offering to the
LORD,
And
Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the
LORD had respect unto
Abel and to his offering:
while
Abel brought the best portions of the
firstborn of his flock. And the
LORD looked with favor on
Abel and his offering,
And the
LORD said unto
Cain, Why art thou
wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
“Why are you
angry,” said the
LORD to
Cain, “and why has your countenance fallen?
And the
LORD said unto
Cain, Where is
Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?
And the
LORD said to
Cain, “Where is your brother
Abel?” “I do not know!” he answered. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.
“What have you done?” replied the
LORD. “The voice of your brother’s blood
cries out to Me from the ground.
And
Cain said unto the
LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.
But
Cain said to the
LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.
And the
LORD said unto him, Therefore
whosoever slayeth
Cain,
vengeance shall be taken on him
sevenfold. And the
LORD set a mark upon
Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.
And
Cain went out from the presence of the
LORD, and dwelt in the land of
Nod, on the east of
Eden.
So
Cain went out from the presence of the
LORD and settled in the land of
Nod, east of
Eden.
And to
Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name
Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the
LORD.
And to
Seth also a son was born, and he called him Enosh. At that time men began to call upon the name of the
LORD.
And he called his name
Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and
toil of our hands, because of the ground which the
LORD hath
cursed.
And he named him
Noah, saying, “May this one comfort us in the labor and
toil of our hands caused by the ground that the
LORD has
cursed.”
And the
LORD said, My spirit shall not always
strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
So the
LORD said, “My Spirit will not
contend with man
forever, for he is
mortal; his days shall be 120 years.”
And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great upon the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was altogether evil all the time.
And it
repented the
LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it
grieved him at his heart.
And the
LORD regretted that He had made man on the earth, and He was
grieved in His heart.
And the
LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the
creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
So the
LORD said, “I will
blot out man, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—every man and beast and
crawling creature and bird of the air—for I am
grieved that I have made them.”
But
Noah found grace in the eyes of the
LORD.
Noah, however, found favor in the eyes of the
LORD.
And the
LORD said unto
Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.
Then the
LORD said to
Noah, “Go into the ark, you and all your family, because I have found you righteous in this generation.
And
Noah did according unto all that the
LORD commanded him.
And
Noah did all that the
LORD had commanded him.
And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.
And they entered, the male and female of every living thing, as God had commanded
Noah. Then the
LORD shut him in.
And
Noah builded an altar unto the
LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
Then
Noah built an altar to the
LORD. And taking from every kind of clean animal and clean bird, he offered burnt offerings on the altar.
And the
LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the
LORD said in his heart, I will not again
curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again
smite any more every thing living, as I have done.
When the
LORD smelled the pleasing
aroma, He said in His heart, “Never again will I
curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from his youth. And never again will I destroy all living creatures as I have done.
And he said, Blessed be the
LORD God of
Shem; and
Canaan shall be his servant.
He also declared: “Blessed be the
LORD, the God of
Shem! May
Canaan be the servant of
Shem.
He was a mighty hunter before the
LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as
Nimrod the mighty hunter before the
LORD.
He was a mighty hunter before the
LORD; so it is said, “Like
Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the
LORD.”
And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
Then the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the sons of men were building.
And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
And the
LORD said, “If they have begun to do this as one people speaking the same language, then nothing they
devise will be beyond them.
So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
So the LORD scattered them from there over the face of all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
Therefore is the name of it called
Babel; because the
LORD did there
confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the
LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
That is why it is called
Babel, for there the
LORD confused the language of the whole world, and from that place the
LORD scattered them over the face of all the earth.
Now the
LORD had said unto
Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will
shew thee:
Then the
LORD said to
Abram, “Leave your country, your kindred, and your father’s household, and go to the land I will show you.
So
Abram departed, as the
LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and
Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of
Haran.
So
Abram departed, as the
LORD had directed him, and Lot went with him.
Abram was seventy-five years old when he left
Haran.
And the
LORD appeared unto
Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the
LORD, who appeared unto him.
Then the
LORD appeared to
Abram and said, “I will give this land to your offspring.” So
Abram built an altar there to the
LORD, who had appeared to him.
And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of
Bethel, and pitched his tent, having
Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the
LORD, and called upon the name of the
LORD.
From there
Abram moved on to the hill country east of
Bethel and pitched his tent, with
Bethel to the west and
Ai to the east. There he built an altar to the
LORD, and he called on the name of the
LORD.
And the
LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai
Abram’s wife.
The
LORD, however,
afflicted Pharaoh and his household with severe plagues because of
Abram’s wife Sarai.
Unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first: and there
Abram called on the name of the
LORD.
to the site where he had built the altar. And there
Abram called on the name of the
LORD.
And Lot lifted up his eyes, and
beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the
LORD destroyed
Sodom and
Gomorrah, even as the garden of the
LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.
And Lot looked out and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan, all the way to Zoar, was well watered like the garden of the
LORD, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the
LORD destroyed
Sodom and
Gomorrah.)
But the men of
Sodom were wicked and sinners before the
LORD exceedingly.
But the men of
Sodom were wicked,
sinning greatly against the
LORD.
And the
LORD said unto
Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:
After Lot had departed, the
LORD said to
Abram, “Now lift up your eyes from the place where you are, and look to the north and south and east and west,
Then
Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of
Mamre, which is in
Hebron, and built there an altar unto the
LORD.
So
Abram moved his tent and went to live near the Oaks of
Mamre at
Hebron, where he built an altar to the
LORD.
And
Abram said to the king of
Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the
LORD, the most high God, the
possessor of heaven and earth,
But
Abram replied to the king of
Sodom, “I have raised my hand to the
LORD God Most High,
Creator of heaven and earth,
After these things the word of the
LORD came unto
Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not,
Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.
After these events, the word of the
LORD came to
Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid,
Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.”
And
Abram said,
Lord GOD, what
wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the
steward of my house is this
Eliezer of Damascus?
But
Abram replied, “O
Lord GOD, what can You give me, since I remain childless, and the heir of my house is
Eliezer of Damascus?”
And, behold, the word of the
LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own
bowels shall be thine heir.
Then the word of the
LORD came to
Abram, saying, “This one will not be your heir, but one who comes from your own body will be your heir.”
And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.
And the LORD took him outside and said, “Now look to the heavens and count the stars, if you are able.” Then He told him, “So shall your offspring be.”
And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
Abram believed the
LORD, and it was credited to him as righteousness.
And he said unto him, I am the
LORD that brought thee out of
Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to
inherit it.
The
LORD also told him, “I am the
LORD, who brought you out of
Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.”
And he said,
Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall
inherit it?
But
Abram replied, “
Lord GOD, how can I know that I will possess it?”
And he said unto him, Take me an
heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a
turtledove, and a young
pigeon.
And the
LORD said to him, “Bring Me a
heifer, a goat, and a ram, each three years old, along with a
turtledove and a young
pigeon.”
And he said unto
Abram, Know of a
surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall
afflict them four hundred years;
Then the
LORD said to
Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not their own, and they will be
enslaved and mistreated four hundred years.
In the same day the
LORD made a covenant with
Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:
On that day the
LORD made a covenant with
Abram, saying, “To your descendants I have given this land—from the river of Egypt to the great River Euphrates—
And Sarai said unto
Abram, Behold now, the
LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my
maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And
Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
So Sarai said to
Abram, “Look now, the
LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Please go to my
maidservant; perhaps I can build a family by her.” And
Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
And Sarai said unto
Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my
maid into thy
bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was
despised in her eyes: the
LORD judge between me and thee.
Then Sarai said to
Abram, “May the wrong done to me be upon you! I delivered my servant into your arms, and ever since she saw that she was
pregnant, she has treated me with contempt. May the
LORD judge between you and me.”
And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
Now the angel of the
LORD found
Hagar by a spring of water in the desert—the spring along the road to Shur.
And the angel of the
LORD said unto her, Return to thy
mistress, and submit
thyself under her hands.
So the angel of the
LORD told her, “Return to your
mistress and submit to her authority.”
And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.
Then the angel added, “I will greatly multiply your offspring so that they will be too numerous to count.”
And the angel of the
LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name
Ishmael; because the
LORD hath heard thy
affliction.
The angel of the
LORD proceeded: “Behold, you have conceived and will bear a son. And you shall name him
Ishmael, for the
LORD has heard your cry of
affliction.
And she called the name of the
LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that
seeth me?
So
Hagar gave this name to the
LORD who had spoken to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “Here I have seen the One who sees me!”
And when
Abram was
ninety years old and nine, the
LORD appeared to
Abram, and said unto him, I am the
Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
And the
LORD appeared unto him in the plains of
Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;
Then the
LORD appeared to Abraham by the Oaks of
Mamre in the heat of the day, while he was sitting at the entrance of his tent.
And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:
“My lord,” said Abraham, “if I have found favor in your sight, please do not pass your servant by.
And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo,
Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And
Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.
Then the
LORD said, “I will surely return to you at this time next year, and your wife
Sarah will have a son!” Now
Sarah was behind him,
listening at the entrance to the tent.
Therefore
Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my
lord being old also?
So she
laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?”
And the
LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did
Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a
surety bear a child, which am old?
And the
LORD asked Abraham, “Why did
Sarah laugh and say, ‘Can I really bear a child when I am old?’
Is any thing too hard for the
LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and
Sarah shall have a son.
Is anything too difficult for the
LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you—in about a year—and
Sarah will have a son.”
But
Sarah was afraid, so she denied it and said, “I did not
laugh.” “No,” replied the
LORD, “but you did
laugh.”
And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;
And the LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?
For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
For I have chosen him, so that he will command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, in order that the LORD may bring upon Abraham what He has promised.”
And the
LORD said, Because the cry of
Sodom and
Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very
grievous;
And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward
Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the
LORD.
And the two men turned away and went toward
Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the
LORD.
And the
LORD said, If I find in
Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will
spare all the place for their sakes.
So the
LORD replied, “If I find fifty righteous ones within the city of
Sodom, on their account I will
spare the whole place.”
And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes:
Then Abraham answered, “Now that I have
ventured to speak to the
Lord—though I am but dust and ashes—
And he spake unto him yet again, and said,
Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty’s sake.
Once again Abraham spoke to the LORD, “Suppose forty are found there?” He answered, “On account of the forty, I will not do it.”
And he said unto him, Oh let not the
Lord be
angry, and I will speak:
Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.
Then Abraham said, “May the
Lord not be
angry, but let me speak further. Suppose thirty are found there?” He replied, “If I find thirty there, I will not do it.”
And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the
Lord:
Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty’s sake.
And Abraham said, “Now that I have
ventured to speak to the
Lord, suppose twenty are found there?” He answered, “On account of the twenty, I will not destroy it.”
And he said, Oh let not the
Lord be
angry, and I will speak yet but this once:
Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten’s sake.
Finally, Abraham said, “May the
Lord not be
angry, but let me speak once more. Suppose ten are found there?” And He answered, “On account of the ten, I will not destroy it.”
And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.
When the LORD had finished speaking with Abraham, He departed, and Abraham returned home.
And he said, Behold now, my
lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant’s house, and
tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said,
Nay; but we will
abide in the street all night.
and said, “My
lords, please turn aside into the house of your servant; wash your feet and
spend the night. Then you can rise early and go on your way.” “No,” they answered, “we will
spend the night in the square.”
For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is
waxen great before the face of the
LORD; and the
LORD hath sent us to destroy it.
because we are about to destroy this place. For the outcry to the LORD against its people is so great that He has sent us to destroy it.”
And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the
LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that
mocked unto his sons in law.
So Lot went out and spoke to the sons-in-law who were
pledged in marriage to his daughters. “Get up,” he said. “Get out of this place, for the
LORD is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was
joking.
And while he
lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the
LORD being
merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.
But when Lot
hesitated, the men
grabbed his hand and the hands of his wife and his two daughters. And they led them safely out of the city, because of the
LORD’s
compassion for them.
And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord:
But Lot replied, “No, my lords, please!
Then the
LORD rained down sulfur and fire on
Sodom and
Gomorrah—from the
LORD out of the heavens.
