Lord, would You destroy a nation even though it is innocent?
For the
LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of
Abimelech, because of
Sarah Abraham’s wife.

Sarah, the
LORD had completely closed all the wombs in
Abimelech’s household.

LORD visited
Sarah as he had said, and the
LORD did unto
Sarah as he had spoken.

Sarah what He had promised.

sworn, declares the
LORD, that because you have done this and have not
withheld your only son,
Hear us, my
lord: thou art a mighty prince among us: in the choice of our
sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall
withhold from thee his
sepulchre, but that thou mayest
bury thy dead.
“
Listen to us, sir. You are God’s chosen one among us.
Bury your dead in the finest of our tombs. None of us will
withhold his tomb for
burying your dead.”
Nay, my
lord, hear me: the field give I thee, and the cave that is therein, I give it thee; in the presence of the sons of my people give I it thee:
bury thy dead.
“No, my
lord.
Listen to me. I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. I give it to you in the presence of my people.
Bury your dead.”
My
lord,
hearken unto me: the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver; what is that
betwixt me and thee?
bury therefore thy dead.
“
Listen to me, my
lord. The land is worth four hundred shekels of silver, but what is that between you and me?
Bury your dead.”

swear by the
LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the
Canaanites, among whom I dwell:

swear by the
LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the
Canaanites among whom I am dwelling,

The LORD, the God of heaven, who brought me from my father’s house and my native land, who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give this land’—He will send His angel before you so that you can take a wife for my son from there.

donkeys.

LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee, and
prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father’s house:

Laban and
Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from the
LORD: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good.

Bethuel answered, “This is from the
LORD; we have no choice in the matter.
Behold,
Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master’s son’s wife, as the
LORD hath spoken.
Rebekah is here before you. Take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, just as the
LORD has decreed.”
And it came to pass, that, when Abraham’s servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth.

And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the

And Isaac intreated the
LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the
LORD was intreated of him, and
Rebekah his wife conceived.

LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. And the
LORD heard his prayer, and his wife
Rebekah conceived.
And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to
enquire of the
LORD.
But the children inside her struggled with each other, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So
Rebekah went to inquire of the
LORD,
And the
LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy
womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy
bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.
and He declared to her: “Two nations are in your
womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”
And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:
The LORD appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt. Settle in the land where I tell you.
Then Isaac
sowed in that land, and received in the same year an
hundredfold: and the
LORD blessed him.
And he removed from thence, and
digged another well; and for that they
strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the
LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.
He moved on from there and
dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. He named it Rehoboth and said, “At last the
LORD has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.”
And the
LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will
bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake.
and that night the
LORD appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will
bless you and multiply your descendants for the sake of My servant Abraham.”
And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the
LORD and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac’s servants
digged a well.
So Isaac built an altar there and called on the name of the
LORD, and he pitched his tent there. His servants also
dug a well there.
And they said, We saw certainly that the
LORD was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath
betwixt us, even
betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;
“We can plainly see that the
LORD has been with you,” they replied. “We
recommend that there should now be an oath between us and you. Let us make a covenant with you
That thou
wilt do us no
hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the
LORD.
that you will not
harm us, just as we have not
harmed you but have done only good to you, sending you on your way in peace. And now you are blessed by the
LORD.”
Bring me
venison, and make me savoury meat, that I may eat, and
bless thee before the
LORD before my death.
‘Bring me some game and prepare me a
tasty dish to eat, so that I may
bless you in the presence of the
LORD before I die.’
And Isaac said unto his son, How is it that thou hast found it so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the LORD thy God brought it to me.
But Isaac asked his son, “How did you ever find it so quickly, my son?” “Because the LORD your God brought it to me,” he replied.
And he came near, and
kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his
raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the
LORD hath blessed:
So he came near and
kissed him. When Isaac smelled his clothing, he blessed him and said: “
Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the
LORD has blessed.
Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be
lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother’s sons bow down to thee:
cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.
May peoples serve you and nations bow down to you. May you be the master of your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who
curse you be
cursed, and those who
bless you be blessed.”
And Isaac answered and said unto
Esau, Behold, I have made him thy
lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now unto thee, my son?
But Isaac answered
Esau: “Look, I have made him your master and given him all his relatives as servants; I have sustained him with grain and new wine. What is left that I can do for you, my son?”
And, behold, the
LORD stood above it, and said, I am the
LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land
whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
And there at the top the LORD was standing and saying, “I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you now lie.
And Jacob
awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the
LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.
When Jacob
woke up, he thought, “Surely the
LORD is in this place, and I was unaware of it.”
So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God:
so that I may return safely to my father’s house, then the LORD will be my God.
And when the
LORD saw that Leah was
hated, he opened her
womb: but
Rachel was barren.
When the
LORD saw that Leah was unloved, He opened her
womb; but
Rachel was barren.
And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name
Reuben: for she said, Surely the
LORD hath looked upon my
affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.
And Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she named him
Reuben, for she said, “The
LORD has seen my
affliction. Surely my husband will love me now.”
And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because the
LORD hath heard that I was
hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name
Simeon.
Again she conceived and gave birth to a son, and she said, “Because the
LORD has heard that I am unloved, He has given me this son as well.” So she named him
Simeon.
And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the LORD: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing.
And once more she conceived and gave birth to a son and said, “This time I will praise the LORD.” So she named him Judah. Then Leah stopped having children.
And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD shall add to me another son.
She named him Joseph, and said, “May the LORD add to me another son.”
And
Laban said unto him, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes,
tarry: for I have learned by experience that the
LORD hath blessed me for thy sake.
But
Laban replied, “If I have found favor in your eyes, please stay. I have learned by
divination that the
LORD has blessed me because of you.”
For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased unto a multitude; and the LORD hath blessed thee since my coming: and now when shall I provide for mine own house also?
Indeed, you had very little before my arrival, but now your wealth has increased many times over. The LORD has blessed you wherever I set foot. But now, when may I also provide for my own household?”
And the LORD said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee.
Then the LORD said to Jacob, “Go back to the land of your fathers and to your kindred, and I will be with you.”
And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched, but found not the images.
Rachel said to her father, “Sir, do not be
angry that I cannot stand up before you; for I am having my period.” So
Laban searched, but could not find the household idols.
And
Mizpah; for he said, The
LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.
It was also called
Mizpah, because
Laban said, “May the
LORD keep watch between you and me when we are absent from each other.
And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my
lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have
sojourned with
Laban, and stayed there until now:
He
instructed them, “You are to say to my master
Esau, ‘Your servant Jacob says: I have been staying with
Laban and have remained there until now.
And I have oxen, and
asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my
lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
I have oxen,
donkeys, flocks, menservants, and maidservants. I have sent this message to inform my master, so that I may find favor in your sight.’”
And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:
Then Jacob declared, “O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, the
LORD who told me, ‘Go back to your country and to your kindred, and I will make you
prosper,’
Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my
lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.
then you are to say, ‘They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a gift, sent to my
lord Esau. And behold, Jacob is behind us.’”
And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.
“What do you mean by sending this whole company to meet me?” asked
Esau. “To find favor in your sight, my
lord,” Jacob answered.
And he said unto him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die.
But Jacob replied, “My
lord knows that the children are
frail, and I must care for sheep and cattle that are
nursing their young. If they are driven hard for even a day, all the animals will die.
Let my
lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to
endure, until I come unto my
lord unto
Seir.
Please let my
lord go
ahead of his servant. I will continue on slowly, at a comfortable
pace for the
livestock and children, until I come to my
lord at
Seir.”
And
Esau said, Let me now leave with thee some of the
folk that are with me. And he said, What needeth it? let me find grace in the sight of my
lord.
“Let me leave some of my people with you,”
Esau said. But Jacob replied, “Why do that? Let me find favor in the sight of my
lord.”
And Er, Judah’s
firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the
LORD; and the
LORD slew him.
But Er, Judah’s
firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the
LORD; so the
LORD put him to death.
And the thing which he did displeased the
LORD: wherefore he
slew him also.
What he did was wicked in the sight of the LORD, so He put Onan to death as well.
And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
And the LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, serving in the household of his Egyptian master.
And his master saw that the
LORD was with him, and that the
LORD made all that he did to
prosper in his hand.
When his master saw that the
LORD was with him and made him
prosper in all he did,
And it came to pass from the time that he had made him
overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the
LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the
LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
From the time that he put Joseph in charge of his household and all he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s household on account of him. The LORD’s blessing was on everything he owned, both in his house and in his field.
And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home.
So Potiphar’s wife kept Joseph’s
cloak beside her until his master came home.
But the LORD was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
the
LORD was with him and extended kindness to him, granting him favor in the eyes of the prison
warden.
The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the
LORD was with him, and that which he did, the
LORD made it to
prosper.
The
warden did not
concern himself with anything under Joseph’s care, because the
LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
And it came to pass after these things, that the
butler of the king of Egypt and his
baker had
offended their
lord the king of Egypt.
And he asked Pharaoh’s officers that were with him in the ward of his
lord’s house, saying, Wherefore look ye so
sadly to day?
So he asked the officials of Pharaoh who were in
custody with him in his master’s house, “Why are your faces so
downcast today?”
And they said unto him,
Nay, my
lord, but to
buy food are thy servants come.
“Not so, my
lord,” they replied. “Your servants have come to
buy food.
The man, who is the
lord of the land, spake roughly to us, and took us for
spies of the country.
“The man who is
lord of the land spoke harshly to us and accused us of
spying on the country.
And the man, the
lord of the country, said unto us,
Hereby shall I know that ye are true men; leave one of your brethren here with me, and take food for the famine of your households, and be gone:
Then the man who is
lord of the land said to us, ‘This is how I will know whether you are
honest: Leave one brother with me, take food to
relieve the hunger of your households, and go.
Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.
Is this not the cup my master drinks from and uses for
divination? What you have done is wicked!’”
And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my
lord these words? God
forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing:
“Why does my lord say these things?” they asked. “Your servants could not possibly do such a thing.
Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks’ mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of
Canaan: how then should we
steal out of thy
lord’s house silver or gold?
We even brought back to you from the land of
Canaan the silver we found in the mouths of our sacks. Why would we
steal silver or gold from your master’s house?
With
whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my
lord’s
bondmen.
If any of your servants is found to have it, he must die, and the rest will become slaves of my lord.”
And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord’s servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.
“What can we say to my
lord?” Judah replied. “How can we
plead? How can we
justify ourselves? God has exposed the iniquity of your servants. We are now my
lord’s slaves—both we and the one who was found with the cup.”
Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.
Then Judah approached Joseph and said, “Sir, please let your servant speak personally to my
lord. Do not be
angry with your servant, for you are equal to Pharaoh himself.
My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother?
My lord asked his servants, ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’
And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.
And we answered, ‘We have an elderly father and a younger brother, the child of his old age. The boy’s brother is dead. He is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.’
And we said unto my
lord, The
lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.
So we said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father. If he were to leave, his father would die.’
And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.
Now when we returned to your servant my father, we relayed your words to him.
Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant
abide instead of the
lad a
bondman to my
lord; and let the
lad go up with his brethren.
Now please let your servant stay here as my lord’s slave in place of the boy. Let him return with his brothers.
So now it was not you that sent me
hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and
lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.
Therefore it was not you who sent me here, but God, who has made me a father to Pharaoh—lord of all his household and ruler over all the land of Egypt.
Haste ye, and go up to my father, and say unto him, Thus saith thy son Joseph, God hath made me
lord of all Egypt: come down unto me,
tarry not:
Now return quickly to my father and tell him, ‘This is what your son Joseph says: God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me without delay.
When that year was ended, they came unto him the second year, and said unto him, We will not hide it from my lord, how that our money is spent; my lord also hath our herds of cattle; there is not ought left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies, and our lands:
When that year was over, they came to him the second year and said, “We cannot hide from our
lord that our money is gone and all our
livestock belongs to you. There is nothing left for our
lord except our bodies and our land.
And they said, Thou hast saved our lives: let us find grace in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.
“You have saved our lives,” they said. “We have found favor in our lord’s eyes, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.”
I have waited for thy salvation, O LORD.
I
await Your salvation, O
LORD.
And the angel of the
LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a
bush: and he looked, and, behold, the
bush burned with fire, and the
bush was not consumed.
There the angel of the
LORD appeared to him in a
blazing fire from within a
bush. Moses saw the
bush ablaze with fire, but it was not consumed.
And when the
LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the
bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.
When the
LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called out to him from within the
bush, “Moses, Moses!” “Here I am,” he answered.
And the
LORD said, I have surely seen the
affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;
The
LORD said, “I have indeed seen the
affliction of My people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their oppressors, and I am aware of their sufferings.
And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The
LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my
memorial unto all generations.
God also told Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The
LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This is My name
forever, and this is how I am to be remembered in every generation.
Go, and gather the elders of Israel together, and say unto them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt:
Go,
assemble the elders of Israel and say to them, ‘The
LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—has appeared to me and said: I have surely attended to you and have seen what has been done to you in Egypt.
