Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.
Above all, fear the LORD and serve Him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things He has done for you.
Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to
Gilgal, and I have not made
supplication unto the
LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.
I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will descend upon me at
Gilgal, and I have not sought the favor of the
LORD.’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.”
And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done
foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the
LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the
LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.
“You have acted
foolishly,” Samuel declared. “You have not kept the command that the
LORD your God gave you; if you had, the
LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.
But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.
But now your kingdom will not
endure; the
LORD has sought a man after His own heart and appointed him ruler over His people, because you have not kept the command of the
LORD.”
And Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, I-chabod’s brother, the son of
Phinehas, the son of
Eli, the
LORD’S priest in
Shiloh, wearing an
ephod. And the people knew not that
Jonathan was gone.
including
Ahijah, who was wearing an
ephod. He was the son of Ichabod’s brother Ahitub son of
Phinehas, the son of
Eli the priest of the
LORD in
Shiloh. But the troops did not know that
Jonathan had left.
And
Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these
uncircumcised: it may be that the
LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the
LORD to save by many or by few.
Jonathan said to the young man bearing his
armor, “Come, let us cross over to the outpost of these
uncircumcised men. Perhaps the
LORD will work on our behalf. Nothing can hinder the
LORD from saving, whether by many or by few.”
But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the LORD hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us.
But if they say, ‘Come on up,’ then we will go up, because this will be our sign that the LORD has delivered them into our hands.”
And the men of the garrison answered
Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will
shew you a thing. And
Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for the
LORD hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.
So the men of the outpost called out to
Jonathan and his
armor-bearer, “Come on up, and we will teach you a
lesson!” “Follow me,”
Jonathan told his
armor-bearer, “for the
LORD has delivered them into the hand of Israel.”
So the
LORD saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over unto Beth-
aven.
So the
LORD saved Israel that day, and the battle moved on beyond Beth-
aven.
Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the
LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have
transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.
Then someone reported to Saul: “Look, the troops are
sinning against the
LORD by eating meat with the blood still in it.” “You have broken faith,” said Saul. “Roll a large stone over here at once.”
And Saul said,
Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me
hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and
slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the
LORD in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and
slew them there.
Then he said, “Go among the troops and tell them, ‘Each man must bring me his ox or his sheep, slaughter them in this place, and then eat. Do not sin against the
LORD by eating meat with the blood still in it.’” So that night
everyone brought his ox and slaughtered it there.
And Saul built an altar unto the LORD: the same was the first altar that he built unto the LORD.
Then Saul built an altar to the LORD; it was the first time he had built an altar to the LORD.
For, as the
LORD liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in
Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.
As surely as the
LORD who saves Israel lives, even if it is my son
Jonathan, he must die!” But not one of the troops said a word.
Therefore Saul said unto the
LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and
Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.
So Saul said to the
LORD, the God of Israel, “Why have You not answered Your servant this day? If the fault is with me or my son
Jonathan,
respond with
Urim; but if the fault is with the men of Israel,
respond with
Thummim.” And
Jonathan and Saul were selected, but the people were cleared of the charge.
And the people said unto Saul, Shall
Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God
forbid: as the
LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people
rescued Jonathan, that he died not.
But the people said to Saul, “Must
Jonathan die—he who accomplished such a great
deliverance for Israel? Never! As surely as the
LORD lives, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, for with God’s help he has accomplished this
today.” So the people
rescued Jonathan, and he did not die.
Samuel also said unto Saul, The
LORD sent me to
anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore
hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the
LORD.
Then Samuel said to Saul, “The
LORD sent me to
anoint you king over His people Israel. Now therefore,
listen to the words of the
LORD.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.
This is what the
LORD of Hosts says: ‘I witnessed what the
Amalekites did to the Israelites when they
ambushed them on their way up from Egypt.
Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying,
Then the word of the LORD came to Samuel, saying,
It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it
grieved Samuel; and he
cried unto the
LORD all night.
“I
regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned away from following Me and has not carried out My instructions.” And Samuel was distressed and
cried out to the
LORD all that night.
And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD.
When Samuel reached him, Saul said to him, “May the
LORD bless you. I have carried out the
LORD’s instructions.”
And Saul said, They have brought them from the
Amalekites: for the people
spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the
LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.
Saul answered, “The troops brought them from the
Amalekites; they
spared the best sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the
LORD your God, but the rest we devoted to destruction.”
Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.
“Stop!”
exclaimed Samuel. “Let me tell you what the
LORD said to me last night.” “Tell me,” Saul replied.
And Samuel said, When thou
wast little in thine own sight,
wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the
LORD anointed thee king over Israel?
And Samuel said, “Although you were once small in your own eyes, have you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The
LORD anointed you king over Israel
And the
LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the
Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.
and sent you on a mission, saying, ‘Go and
devote to destruction the sinful
Amalekites. Fight against them until you have
wiped them out.’
Wherefore then
didst thou not obey the voice of the
LORD, but
didst fly upon the
spoil, and
didst evil in the sight of the
LORD?
So why did you not obey the
LORD? Why did you
rush upon the
plunder and do evil in the sight of the
LORD?”
And Saul said unto Samuel,
Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the
LORD, and have gone the way which the
LORD sent me, and have brought
Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the
Amalekites.
“But I did obey the
LORD,” Saul replied. “I went on the mission that the
LORD gave me. I brought back
Agag king of Amalek and devoted the
Amalekites to destruction.
But the people took of the
spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the
LORD thy God in
Gilgal.
The troops took sheep and cattle from the
plunder, the best of the things devoted to destruction, in order to sacrifice them to the
LORD your God at
Gilgal.”
And Samuel said, Hath the
LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the
LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to
hearken than the fat of rams.
But Samuel declared: “Does the
LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obedience to His voice? Behold, obedience is better than sacrifice, and
attentiveness is better than the fat of rams.
For rebellion is as the sin of
witchcraft, and
stubbornness is as iniquity and
idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the
LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
For rebellion is like the sin of
divination, and
arrogance is like the wickedness of
idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the
LORD, He has rejected you as king.”
And Saul said unto Samuel, I have
sinned: for I have
transgressed the commandment of the
LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.
Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have
sinned; I have
transgressed the
LORD’s commandment and your instructions, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.
Now therefore, I pray thee,
pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the
LORD.
Now therefore, please
forgive my sin and return with me so I can worship the
LORD.”
And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.
“I will not return with you,” Samuel replied. “For you have rejected the word of the LORD, and He has rejected you as king over Israel.”
And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou.
So Samuel said to him, “The
LORD has
torn the kingdom of Israel from you
today and has given it to your
neighbor who is better than you.
Then he said, I have
sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the
LORD thy God.
“I have
sinned,” Saul replied. “Please honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel. Come back with me, so that I may worship the
LORD your God.”
So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD.
So Samuel went back with Saul, and Saul worshiped the LORD.
And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel
hewed Agag in pieces before the
LORD in
Gilgal.
But Samuel declared: “As your sword has made women childless, so your mother will be childless among women.” And Samuel
hacked Agag to pieces before the
LORD at
Gilgal.
And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel
mourned for Saul: and the
LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
And to the day of his death, Samuel never again visited Saul. Samuel
mourned for Saul, and the
LORD regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel.
And the
LORD said unto Samuel, How long
wilt thou
mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to
Jesse the
Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
Now the
LORD said to Samuel, “How long are you going to
mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to
Jesse of
Bethlehem, for I have selected from his sons a king for Myself.”
And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the
LORD said, Take an
heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the
LORD.
“How can I go?” Samuel asked. “Saul will hear of it and kill me!” The
LORD answered, “Take a
heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the
LORD.’
And Samuel did that which the
LORD spake, and came to
Bethlehem. And the elders of the town
trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou
peaceably?
So Samuel did what the
LORD had said and went to
Bethlehem. When the elders of the town met him, they
trembled and asked, “Do you come in peace?”
“In peace,” he replied. “I have come to sacrifice to the
LORD.
Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he consecrated
Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the
LORD’S
anointed is before him.
When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and said, “Surely here before the
LORD is His
anointed.”
But the
LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his
stature; because I have refused him: for the
LORD seeth not as man
seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the
LORD looketh on the heart.
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or height, for I have rejected him; the LORD does not see as man does. For man sees the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart.”
Then
Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the
LORD chosen this.
Then
Jesse called Abinadab and presented him to Samuel, who said, “The
LORD has not chosen this one either.”
Then
Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the
LORD chosen this.
Next
Jesse presented Shammah, but Samuel said, “The
LORD has not chosen this one either.”
Again,
Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto
Jesse, The
LORD hath not chosen these.
Thus
Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel told him, “The
LORD has not chosen any of these.”
And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was
ruddy, and
withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the
LORD said, Arise,
anoint him: for this is he.
So
Jesse sent for his youngest son and brought him in. He was
ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. And the
LORD said, “Rise and
anoint him, for he is the one.”
Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and
anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the
LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to
Ramah.
So Samuel took the horn of oil and
anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the
LORD rushed upon David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and went to
Ramah.
But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.
After the Spirit of the
LORD had departed from Saul, a spirit of distress from the
LORD began to
torment him.
Let our
lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a
cunning player on an
harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
Let our
lord command your servants here to seek out someone who can
skillfully play the
harp. Whenever the spirit of distress from God is upon you, he is to play it, and you will be well.”
Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of
Jesse the
Bethlehemite, that is
cunning in playing, and a mighty
valiant man, and a man of war, and
prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the
LORD is with him.
One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of
Jesse of
Bethlehem who knows how to play the
harp. He is a mighty man of
valor, a
warrior,
eloquent and handsome, and the
LORD is with him.”
David said moreover, The
LORD that delivered me out of the
paw of the lion, and out of the
paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this
Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the
LORD be with thee.
David added, “The
LORD, who delivered me from the claws of the lion and the bear, will deliver me from the hand of this
Philistine.” “Go,” said Saul, “and may the
LORD be with you.”
Then said David to the
Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a
spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the
LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast
defied.
But David said to the
Philistine, “You come against me with sword and
spear and
javelin, but I come against you in the name of the
LORD of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have
defied.
This day will the
LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will
smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
This day the
LORD will deliver you into my hand. This day I will strike you down, cut off your head, and give the
carcasses of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the creatures of the earth. Then the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.
And all this assembly shall know that the
LORD saveth not with sword and
spear: for the battle is the
LORD’S, and he will give you into our hands.
And all those assembled here will know that it is not by sword or
spear that the
LORD saves; for the battle is the
LORD’s, and He will give all of you into our hands.”
And Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him, and was departed from Saul.
So Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with David but had departed from Saul.
And David
behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the
LORD was with him.
and he continued to
prosper in all his ways, because the
LORD was with him.
And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou
valiant for me, and fight the
LORD’S battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.
Then Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you in marriage. Only be
valiant for me and fight the
LORD’s battles.” But Saul was thinking, “I need not raise my hand against him; let the hand of the Philistines be against him.”
And Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and that Michal Saul’s daughter loved him.
When Saul realized that the LORD was with David and that his daughter Michal loved David,
For he did put his life in his hand, and
slew the
Philistine, and the
LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and
didst rejoice: wherefore then
wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to
slay David without a cause?
He took his life in his hands when he struck down the
Philistine, and the
LORD worked a great salvation for all Israel. You saw it and
rejoiced, so why would you sin against innocent blood by killing David for no reason?”
Saul
listened to the voice of
Jonathan and
swore an oath: “As surely as the
LORD lives, David will not be put to death.”
And the evil spirit from the
LORD was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his
javelin in his hand: and David played with his hand.
But as Saul was sitting in his house with his
spear in his hand, a spirit of distress from the
LORD came upon him. While David was playing the
harp,
And David
sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not
Jonathan know this, lest he be
grieved: but truly as the
LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.
But David again
vowed, “Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, ‘
Jonathan must not know of this, or he will be
grieved.’ As surely as the
LORD lives and as you
yourself live, there is but a step between me and death.”
Therefore thou shalt deal kindly with thy servant; for thou hast brought thy servant into a covenant of the
LORD with thee: notwithstanding, if there be in me iniquity,
slay me
thyself; for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father?
Therefore deal faithfully with your servant, for you have brought me into a covenant with you before the
LORD. If there is iniquity in me, then kill me
yourself; why should you bring me to your father?”
And
Jonathan said unto David, O
LORD God of Israel, when I have sounded my father about to
morrow any time, or the third day, and, behold, if there be good toward David, and I then send not unto thee, and
shew it thee;
and
Jonathan said, “By the
LORD, the God of Israel, I will sound out my father by this time
tomorrow or the next day. If he is favorable toward you, will I not send for you and tell you?
The
LORD do so and much more to
Jonathan: but if it please my father to do thee evil, then I will
shew it thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace: and the
LORD be with thee, as he hath been with my father.
But if my father intends to bring evil on you, then may the
LORD punish me, and ever so severely, if I do not tell you and send you on your way in safety. May the
LORD be with you, just as He has been with my father.
And thou shalt not only while yet I live
shew me the kindness of the
LORD, that I die not:
And as long as I live, treat me with the LORD’s loving devotion, that I may not die,
But also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the LORD hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.
and do not ever cut off your loving devotion from my household—not even when the LORD cuts off every one of David’s enemies from the face of the earth.”
So
Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, Let the
LORD even require it at the hand of David’s enemies.
So
Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, “May the
LORD hold David’s enemies accountable.”
And, behold, I will send a
lad, saying, Go, find out the arrows. If I expressly say unto the
lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee, take them; then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no
hurt; as the
LORD liveth.
Then I will send a boy and say, ‘Go, find the arrows!’ Now, if I expressly say to him, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you; bring them,’ then come, because as surely as the LORD lives, it is safe for you and there is no danger.
But if I say thus unto the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee; go thy way: for the LORD hath sent thee away.
But if I say to the young man, ‘Look, the arrows are beyond you,’ then you must go, for the LORD has sent you away.
And as touching the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, the LORD be between thee and me for ever.
And as for the matter you and I have discussed, the
LORD is a witness between you and me
forever.”
And
Jonathan said to David, Go in peace,
forasmuch as we have
sworn both of us in the name of the
LORD, saying, The
LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and
Jonathan went into the city.
And
Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, for the two of us have
sworn in the name of the
LORD, saying, ‘May the
LORD be a witness between you and me, and between your descendants and mine
forever.’” Then David got up and departed, and
Jonathan went back into the city.
So the priest gave him
hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the
shewbread, that was taken from before the
LORD, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.
So the priest gave him the consecrated bread, since there was no bread there but the Bread of the Presence, which had been removed from before the LORD and replaced with hot bread on the day it was taken away.
Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day,
detained before the
LORD; and his name was Doeg, an
Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Saul.
Now one of Saul’s servants was there that day,
detained before the
LORD. And his name was Doeg the
Edomite, the chief
shepherd for Saul.
And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord.
“
Listen now, son of Ahitub,” said Saul. “Here I am, my
lord,” he replied.
And the king said unto the
footmen that stood about him, Turn, and
slay the priests of the
LORD; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not
shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the
LORD.
Then the king ordered the guards at his side, “Turn and kill the priests of the
LORD, because they too sided with David. For they knew he was
fleeing, but they did not tell me.” But the king’s servants would not lift a hand to strike the priests of the
LORD.
And
Abiathar shewed David that Saul had slain the
LORD’S priests.
And
Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the
LORD.
Therefore David enquired of the
LORD, saying, Shall I go and
smite these Philistines? And the
LORD said unto David, Go, and
smite the Philistines, and save Keilah.
So David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go and attack these Philistines?” And the LORD said to David, “Go and attack the Philistines and save Keilah.”
Then David enquired of the LORD yet again. And the LORD answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into thine hand.
Once again, David inquired of the LORD, and the LORD answered him: “Go at once to Keilah, for I will deliver the Philistines into your hand.”
Then said David, O LORD God of Israel, thy servant hath certainly heard that Saul seeketh to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake.
And David said, “O LORD, God of Israel, Your servant has heard that Saul intends to come to Keilah and destroy the city on my account.
Will the men of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? will Saul come down, as thy servant hath heard? O
LORD God of Israel, I
beseech thee, tell thy servant. And the
LORD said, He will come down.
Will the citizens of Keilah surrender me into his hand? Will Saul come down, as Your servant has heard? O LORD, God of Israel, please tell Your servant.” “He will,” said the LORD.
Then said David, Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul? And the LORD said, They will deliver thee up.
So David asked, “Will the citizens of Keilah surrender me and my men into the hand of Saul?” “They will,” said the LORD.
And they two made a covenant before the
LORD: and David abode in the wood, and
Jonathan went to his house.
So the two of them made a covenant before the
LORD. And David remained in Horesh, while
Jonathan went home.
And Saul said, Blessed be ye of the
LORD; for ye have
compassion on me.
“May you be blessed by the
LORD,” replied Saul, “for you have had
compassion on me.
And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the
LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the
skirt of Saul’s
robe privily.
So David’s men said to him, “This is the day about which the
LORD said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do with him as you wish.’” Then David
crept up secretly and cut off a corner of Saul’s
robe.
And he said unto his men, The
LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the
LORD’S
anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the
anointed of the
LORD.
So he said to his men, “The
LORD forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the
LORD’s
anointed. May I never lift my hand against him, since he is the
LORD’s
anointed.”
David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and
cried after Saul, saying, My
lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David
stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.
After that, David got up, went out of the cave, and called out to Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed facedown in reverence
Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the
LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some
bade me kill thee: but mine eye
spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my
lord; for he is the
LORD’S
anointed.
Behold, this day you have seen with your own eyes that the
LORD delivered you into my hand in the cave. I was told to kill you, but I
spared you and said, ‘I will not lift my hand against my
lord, since he is the
LORD’s
anointed.’
The
LORD judge between me and thee, and the
LORD avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.
May the
LORD judge between you and me, and may the
LORD take
vengeance on you, but my hand will never be against you.
The
LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and
plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand.
May the
LORD be our judge and decide between you and me. May He take notice and
plead my case and deliver me from your hand.”
And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me:
forasmuch as when the
LORD had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst me not.
And you have shown this day how well you have dealt with me; for when the LORD delivered me into your hand, you did not kill me.
For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore the LORD reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day.
When a man finds his enemy, does he let him go away
unharmed? May the
LORD reward you with good for what you have done for me this day.
Swear now therefore unto me by the
LORD, that thou
wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou
wilt not destroy my name out of my father’s house.
So now,
swear to me by the
LORD that you will not cut off my descendants or
wipe out my name from my father’s house.”
And fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my
lord, upon me let this iniquity be: and let thine
handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine
audience, and hear the words of thine
handmaid.
She fell at his feet and said, “My
lord, may the
blame be on me alone, but please let your servant speak to you; hear the words of your servant.
Let not my
lord, I pray thee, regard this man of
Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thine
handmaid saw not the young men of my
lord, whom thou
didst send.
My
lord should pay no attention to this
scoundrel Nabal, for he lives up to his name: His name means
Fool, and folly accompanies him. I, your servant, did not see my
lord’s young men whom you sent.
Now therefore, my
lord, as the
LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing the
LORD hath
withholden thee from coming to shed blood, and from
avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, and they that seek evil to my
lord, be as Nabal.
Now, my
lord, as surely as the
LORD lives and you
yourself live, the
LORD has held you back from coming to
bloodshed and
avenging yourself with your own hand. May your enemies and those who seek
harm for my
lord be like Nabal.
And now this blessing which thine
handmaid hath brought unto my
lord, let it even be given unto the young men that follow my
lord.
Now let this gift your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow you.
I pray thee,
forgive the
trespass of thine
handmaid: for the
LORD will certainly make my
lord a sure house; because my
lord fighteth the battles of the
LORD, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days.
Please
forgive your servant’s
offense, for the
LORD will surely make a lasting dynasty for my
lord, because he fights the
LORD’s battles. May no evil be found in you as long as you live.
