Neglect
not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the
presbytery.
Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given you through the prophecy spoken over you at the laying on of the hands of the elders.
Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;
Do
not rebuke an older man, but appeal to him as to a father. Treat younger men as brothers,
But if any provide
not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an
infidel.
If
anyone does
not provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
Let
not a widow be taken into the number under
threescore years old, having been the wife of one man,
A widow should be
enrolled if she is at least sixty years old, the wife of one man,
And
withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and
not only idle, but tattlers also and
busybodies, speaking things which they ought
not.
At the same time they will also learn to be idle, going from house to house and being
not only idle, but also gossips and
busybodies,
discussing things they should
not mention.
If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them
relieve them, and let
not the church be charged; that it may
relieve them that are widows indeed.
If any believing woman has dependent widows, she must assist them and not allow the church to be burdened, so that it can help the widows who are truly in need.
For the scripture saith, Thou shalt
not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.
For the Scripture says, “Do
not muzzle an ox while it is
treading out the grain,” and, “The worker is worthy of his wages.”
Against an elder receive
not an
accusation, but before two or three witnesses.
Do
not entertain an
accusation against an elder, except on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the
elect angels, that thou observe these things without
preferring one before another, doing
nothing by
partiality.
I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus and the
elect angels to maintain these principles without
bias, and to do
nothing out of
partiality.
Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be
partaker of other men’s sins: keep
thyself pure.
Do
not be too quick in the laying on of hands and thereby share in the sins of others. Keep
yourself pure.
Some men’s sins are open
beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after.
The sins of some men are obvious, going
ahead of them to judgment; but the sins of others do
not surface until later.
Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be
not blasphemed.
All who are under the yoke of slavery should regard their masters as fully worthy of honor, so that God’s name and our teaching will not be discredited.
And they that have believing masters, let them
not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and
exhort.
Those who have believing masters should
not show disrespect because they are brothers, but should serve them all the more, since those receiving their good service are beloved believers. Teach and
encourage these principles.
If any man teach otherwise, and consent
not to
wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to
godliness;
If
anyone teaches another doctrine and disagrees with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and with godly teaching,
He is proud, knowing
nothing, but
doting about questions and strifes of words,
whereof cometh
envy,
strife, railings, evil surmisings,
For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
For we brought nothing into the world, so we cannot carry anything out of it.
Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
Instruct those who are rich in the present age
not to be
conceited and
not to put their hope in the uncertainty of wealth, but in God, who richly provides all things for us to enjoy.
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.
Be
not thou therefore
ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou
partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;
So do
not be
ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, or of me, His prisoner. Instead, join me in suffering for the gospel by the power of God.
Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
He has saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works, but by His own purpose and by the grace He granted us in Christ Jesus before time began.
For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am
not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
For this reason, even though I suffer as I do, I am
not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed, and I am
convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him for that day.
The Lord give mercy unto the house of
Onesiphorus; for he
oft refreshed me, and was
not ashamed of my chain:
May the Lord grant mercy to the household of
Onesiphorus, because he has often refreshed me and was unashamed of my chains.
Likewise, a
competitor does
not receive the crown unless he competes according to the rules.
Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil
doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is
not bound.
for which I suffer to the extent of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God cannot be chained!
If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.
if we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.
Of these things put them in
remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they
strive not about words to no profit, but to the
subverting of the hearers.
Remind the believers of these things, charging them before God to avoid quarreling over words, which succeeds only in leading the listeners to ruin.
Make every effort to present
yourself approved to God, an unashamed
workman who accurately handles the word of truth.
But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.
A large house contains not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay. Some indeed are for honorable use, but others are for common use.
And the servant of the Lord must
not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was.
But they will
not advance much further. For just like
Jannes and Jambres, their folly will be plain to
everyone.
For the time will come when they will
not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they
heap to themselves teachers, having
itching ears;
For the time will come when men will
not tolerate sound doctrine, but with
itching ears they will gather around themselves teachers to suit their own desires.
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
From now on there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will
award to me on that day—and
not only to me, but to all who
crave His appearing.
At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men
forsook me: I pray God that it may
not be laid to their charge.
At my first
defense, no one stood with me, but
everyone deserted me. May it
not be charged against them.
Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message would be fully proclaimed, and all the Gentiles would hear it. So I was delivered from the mouth of the lion.
If any be
blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children
not accused of
riot or
unruly.
Whose mouths must be stopped, who
subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought
not, for
filthy lucre’s sake.
who must be silenced. For the sake of dishonorable gain, they undermine entire households and teach things they should not.
Not giving
heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.
and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the commands of men who have rejected the truth.
Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are
defiled and unbelieving is
nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is
defiled.
To the pure, all things are pure; but to the
defiled and unbelieving,
nothing is pure. Indeed, both their minds and their consciences are
defiled.
The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh
holiness,
not false accusers,
not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
Older women, likewise, are to be
reverent in their
behavior,
not slanderers or
addicted to much wine, but teachers of good.
to be self-
controlled, pure, managers of their households, kind, and
submissive to their own husbands, so that the word of God will
not be discredited.
Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be
ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.
and
wholesome speech that is above reproach, so that
anyone who opposes us will be
ashamed, having
nothing bad to say about us.
Exhort servants to be
obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things;
not answering again;
Slaves are to submit to their own masters in everything, to be well-pleasing,
not argumentative,
not stealing from them, but showing all good faith, so that in every respect they will
adorn the teaching about God our
Savior.
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
He saved us,
not by the righteous deeds we had done, but according to His mercy, through the washing of new birth and
renewal by the Holy Spirit.
Bring Zenas the
lawyer and Apollos on their journey
diligently, that
nothing be wanting unto them.
Do your best to
equip Zenas the
lawyer and Apollos, so that they will have everything they need.
And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.
And our people must also learn to
devote themselves to good works in order to meet the pressing needs of others, so that they will
not be unfruitful.
But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.
But I did
not want to do anything without your consent, so that your goodness will
not be out of
compulsion, but by your own free will.
Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?
no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a beloved brother. He is especially beloved to me, but even more so to you, both in person and in the Lord.
I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it:
albeit I do
not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.
I, Paul, write this with my own hand. I will repay it—not to mention that you owe me your very self.
And as a
vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall
not fail.
You will roll them up like a
robe; like a garment they will be changed; but You remain the same, and Your years will never end.”
Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?
Are
not the angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will
inherit salvation?
Therefore we ought to give the more earnest
heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
We must pay closer attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.
For unto the angels hath he
not put in subjection the world to come,
whereof we speak.
For it is not to angels that He has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking.
Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.
and placed everything under his feet.” When God subjected all things to him, He left nothing outside of his control. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him.
For both he that sanctifieth and they who are
sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is
not ashamed to call them brethren,
For both the One who sanctifies and those who are
sanctified are of the same family. So Jesus is
not ashamed to call them brothers.
For
verily he took
not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.
For surely it is not the angels He helps, but the descendants of Abraham.
do
not harden your hearts, as you did in the rebellion, in the day of testing in the wilderness,
Wherefore I was
grieved with that generation, and said, They do
alway err in their heart; and they have
not known my ways.
Therefore I was
angry with that generation, and I said, ‘Their hearts are always going
astray, and they have
not known My ways.’
So I
sware in my wrath, They shall
not enter into my rest.)
So I
swore on oath in My anger, ‘They shall never enter My rest.’”
While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice,
harden not your hearts, as in the
provocation.
As it has been said: “
Today, if you hear His voice, do
not harden your hearts, as you did in the rebellion.”
For some, when they had heard, did
provoke:
howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.
For who were the ones who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt?
But with whom was he
grieved forty years? was it
not with them that had
sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?
And with whom was God
angry for forty years? Was it
not with those who
sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?
And to whom
sware he that they should
not enter into his rest, but to them that believed
not?
And to whom did He
swear that they would never enter His rest? Was it
not to those who disobeyed?
So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
So we see that it was because of their unbelief that they were unable to enter.
For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
For we also received the good news just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, since they did
not share the faith of those who
comprehended it.
Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:
Since, then, it remains for some to enter His rest, and since those who formerly heard the good news did not enter because of their disobedience,
Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice,
harden not your hearts.
God again designated a certain day as “
Today,” when a long time later He spoke through David as was just stated: “
Today, if you hear His voice, do
not harden your hearts.”
For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.
For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.
Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight; everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
For we have
not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our
infirmities; but was in all points
tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
For we do
not have a high priest who is unable to
sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was
tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin.
So also Christ
glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I
begotten thee.
So also Christ did
not take upon Himself the glory of becoming a high priest, but He was called by the One who said to Him: “You are My Son;
today I have become Your Father.”
For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to reteach you the
basic principles of God’s word. You need milk,
not solid food!
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection;
not laying again the foundation of
repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to
maturity,
not laying again the foundation of
repentance from dead works, and of faith in God,
For God is
not unrighteous to
forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
For God is
not unjust. He will
not forget your work and the love you have shown for His name as you have ministered to the saints and continue to do so.
But he whose descent is
not counted from them received
tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises.
But
Melchizedek, who did
not trace his descent from Levi, collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.
If therefore perfection were by the
Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and
not be called after the order of Aaron?
Now if perfection could have been attained through the
Levitical priesthood (for on this basis the people received the law), why was there still need for another priest to appear—one in the order of
Melchizedek and
not in the order of Aaron?
For it is evident that our Lord
sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake
nothing concerning priesthood.
For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah, a tribe as to which Moses said nothing about priests.
Who is made,
not after the law of a
carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.
one who has become a priest
not by a law of succession, but by the power of an
indestructible life.
For the law made
nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw
nigh unto God.
(for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.
And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest:
And none of this happened without an oath. For others became priests without an oath,
(For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord
sware and will
not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:)
but Jesus became a priest with an oath by the One who said to Him: “The Lord has
sworn and will
not change His mind: ‘You are a priest
forever.’”
And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:
Now there have been many other priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office.
Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.
Unlike the other high priests, He does not need to offer daily sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people; He sacrificed for sin once for all when He offered up Himself.
A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.
and who ministers in the sanctuary and true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by man.
For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:
Now if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are already priests who offer gifts according to the law.
Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.
It will
not be like the covenant I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, because they did
not abide by My covenant, and I disregarded them, declares the Lord.
And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
No longer will each one teach his
neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest.
But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:
But only the high priest entered the second room, and then only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance.
The Holy Ghost this
signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was
not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:
By this arrangement the Holy Spirit was showing that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still standing.
Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;
It is an illustration for the present time, because the gifts and sacrifices being offered were unable to
cleanse the conscience of the worshiper.
But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that have come, He went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made by hands and is not a part of this creation.
Neither by the blood of goats and
calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal
redemption for us.
He did
not enter by the blood of goats and
calves, but He entered the Most Holy Place once for all by His own blood, thus securing eternal
redemption.
For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the
testator liveth.
because a will does not take effect until the one who made it has died; it cannot be executed while he is still alive.
Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.
That is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood.
For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:
For Christ did not enter a man-made copy of the true sanctuary, but He entered heaven itself, now to appear on our behalf in the presence of God.
Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;
Nor did He enter heaven to offer Himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own.
So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
so also Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many; and He will appear a second time,
not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who eagerly
await Him.
For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and
not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers
thereunto perfect.
For the law is only a shadow of the good things to come,
not the
realities themselves. It can never, by the same sacrifices offered year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship.
