The descendants of Joseph became two tribes,
Manasseh and Ephraim. And no portion of the land was given to the Levites, except for cities in which to live, along with
pasturelands for their flocks and herds.

Shiloh in the land of
Canaan, saying, The LORD commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with the suburbs thereof for our cattle.
at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan and said to them, “The LORD commanded through Moses that we be given cities in which to live, together with
pasturelands for our
livestock.”
And the children of Israel gave unto the Levites out of their inheritance, at the commandment of the LORD, these cities and their suburbs.
So by the command of the LORD, the Israelites gave the Levites these cities and their pasturelands out of their own inheritance:
And the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities with their suburbs, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.
So the Israelites
allotted to the Levites these cities, together with their
pasturelands, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.

Anak, which city is
Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with the suburbs thereof round about it.
They gave them Kiriath-arba (that is,
Hebron), with its surrounding
pasturelands, in the hill country of Judah. (Arba was the father of
Anak.)
Thus they gave to the children of Aaron the priest
Hebron with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the
slayer; and
Libnah with her suburbs,
So to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave these cities, together with their
pasturelands:
Hebron, a city of refuge for the
manslayer,
Libnah,
And
Ain with her suburbs, and Juttah with her suburbs, and Beth-shemesh with her suburbs; nine cities out of those two tribes.
Ain, Juttah, and Beth-shemesh—nine cities from these two tribes, together with their
pasturelands.

And from the half-tribe of
Manasseh they were given Taanach and
Gath-
rimmon—two cities, together with their
pasturelands.

Kohath that remained.
In all, ten cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the rest of the Kohathite clans.
And unto the children of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, out of the other half tribe of
Manasseh they gave Golan in
Bashan with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the
slayer; and Beesh-terah with her suburbs; two cities.
This is what the
Levite clans of the Gershonites were given: From the half-tribe of
Manasseh they were given Golan in
Bashan, a city of refuge for the
manslayer, and Beeshterah—two cities, together with their
pasturelands.

Naphtali they were given Kedesh in
Galilee (a city of refuge for the
manslayer), Hammoth-
dor, and Kartan—three cities, together with their

Heshbon, and Jazer—four cities in all, together with their
pasturelands.
All the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty and eight cities with their suburbs.
For the Levites, then, there were forty-eight cities in all, together with their pasturelands, within the territory of the Israelites.
These cities were every one with their suburbs round about them: thus were all these cities.
Each of these cities had its own surrounding pasturelands; this was true for all the cities.
There failed not ought of any good thing which the LORD had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass.

And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of
Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the
passage of the children of Israel.
Then the Israelites received the report: “Behold, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh have built an altar on the border of the land of
Canaan, at Geliloth near the Jordan on the
Israelite side.”
Notwithstanding, if the land of your possession be unclean, then
pass ye over unto the land of the possession of the LORD, wherein the LORD’S tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but
rebel not against the LORD, nor
rebel against us, in building you an altar beside the altar of the LORD our God.
If indeed the land of your inheritance is unclean, then cross over to the land of the LORD’s possession, where the LORD’s tabernacle stands, and take possession of it among us. But do not
rebel against the LORD or against us by building for
yourselves an altar other than the altar of the LORD our God.
And it came to
pass a long time after that the LORD had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua waxed old and
stricken in age.
A long time after the LORD had given Israel rest from all the enemies around them, when Joshua was old and well along in years,
And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.
Now behold,
today I am going the way of all the earth, and you know with all your heart and soul that not one of the good promises the LORD your God made to you has failed. Everything was fulfilled for you; not one promise has failed.
Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
But just as every good thing the LORD your God promised you has come to
pass, likewise the LORD will bring upon you the
calamity He has threatened, until He has destroyed you from this good land He has given you.
For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of
bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we
passed:
For the LORD our God brought us and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and performed these great signs before our eyes. He also protected us throughout our journey and among all the nations through which we traveled.
And it came to
pass after these things, that Joshua the son of
Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old.

Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of 110.
Now after the death of Joshua it came to
pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the
Canaanites first, to fight against them?
After the death of Joshua, the Israelites inquired of the LORD, “Who will be the first to go up and fight for us against the
Canaanites?”
And it came to
pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her
ass; and
Caleb said unto her, What
wilt thou?

donkey,
Caleb asked her, “What do you desire?”

pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the
Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.

pass, when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and

wept.
And it came to
pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their
stubborn way.
But when the judge died, the Israelites became even more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods to serve them and bow down to them. They would not give up their evil practices and
stubborn ways.
And Ehud escaped while they
tarried, and
passed beyond the
quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.
Ehud, however, had escaped while the servants waited. He passed by the idols and escaped to Seirah.
And it came to
pass, when he was come, that he
blew a
trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.
On arriving in Seirah, he
blew the ram’s horn throughout the hill country of Ephraim. The Israelites came down with him from the hills, and he became their leader.
And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.
“Follow me,” he told them, “for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they followed him down and seized the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow
anyone to cross over.
And it came to
pass, when the children of Israel
cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites,
Now when the Israelites
cried out to the LORD because of
Midian,
And it came to
pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father’s young
bullock, even the second
bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of
Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the
grove that is by it:
On that very night the LORD said to
Gideon, “Take your father’s young bull and a second bull seven years old,
tear down your father’s altar to
Baal, and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.
And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand.
That night the LORD said to
Gideon, “Get up and go down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand.
And
Gideon came to Jordan, and
passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him,
faint, yet pursuing them.
Then
Gideon and his three hundred men came to the Jordan and crossed it, exhausted yet still in pursuit.
And it came to
pass, as soon as
Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a
whoring after
Baalim, and made
Baal-berith their god.
And as soon as
Gideon was dead, the Israelites turned and
prostituted themselves with the Baals, and they set up
Baal-berith as their god.
And the men of
Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they
robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told
Abimelech.
And it came to
pass on the
morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told
Abimelech.
The next day the people of
Shechem went out into the fields, and this was reported to
Abimelech.
Moreover the children of
Ammon passed over Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim; so that Israel was
sore distressed.
The
Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, and Israel was in deep distress.
And it came to
pass in process of time, that the children of
Ammon made war against Israel.
Some time later, when the
Ammonites fought against Israel
Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of
Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee,
pass through thy land: but the king of
Edom would not
hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh.
Then Israel sent messengers to the king of
Edom, saying, ‘Please let us
pass through your land,’ but the king of
Edom would not
listen. They also sent messengers to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel stayed in Kadesh.
And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the
Amorites, the king of
Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us
pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place.
And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the
Amorites, who ruled in
Heshbon, and said to him, ‘Please let us
pass through your land into our own place.’
But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
But Sihon would not trust Israel to
pass through his territory. So he gathered all his people,
encamped in Jahaz, and fought with Israel.
So
Jephthah passed over unto the children of
Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hands.
So
Jephthah crossed over to the
Ammonites to fight against them, and the LORD delivered them into his hand.
And it came to
pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said,
Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.
As soon as
Jephthah saw her, he
tore his clothes and said, “No! Not my daughter! You have brought me to my knees! You have brought great misery upon me, for I have given my word to the LORD and cannot take it back.”
And it came to
pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his
vow which he had
vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,
After two months, she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had
vowed. And she had never had relations with a man. So it has become a custom in Israel
And the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and went northward, and said unto
Jephthah, Wherefore
passedst thou over to fight against the children of
Ammon, and
didst not call us to go with thee? we will burn thine house upon thee with fire.
Then the men of Ephraim assembled and crossed the Jordan to Zaphon. They said to
Jephthah, “Why have you crossed over to fight the
Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We will burn your house down with you inside!”
And when I saw that ye delivered me not, I put my life in my hands, and
passed over against the children of
Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand: wherefore then are ye come up unto me this day, to fight against me?
When I saw that you would not save me, I risked my life and crossed over to the
Ammonites, and the LORD delivered them into my hand. Why then have you come
today to fight against me?”
And the Gileadites took the
passages of Jordan before the Ephraimites: and it was so, that when those Ephraimites which were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of
Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said,
Nay;
The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim, and whenever a
fugitive from Ephraim would say, “Let me cross over,” the Gileadites would ask him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” If he answered, “No,”
Then said they unto him, Say now
Shibboleth: and he said Sibboleth: for he could not frame to
pronounce it right. Then they took him, and
slew him at the
passages of Jordan: and there fell at that time of the Ephraimites forty and two thousand.
they told him, “Please say
Shibboleth.” If he said, “Sibboleth,” because he could not
pronounce it correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. So at that time 42,000 Ephraimites were killed.
And
Manoah said, Now let thy words come to
pass. How shall we order the child, and how shall we do unto him?
Then
Manoah asked, “When your words come to
pass, what will be the boy’s rule of life and mission?”
And
Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, What is thy name, that when thy sayings come to
pass we may do thee honour?
Then
Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, “What is your name, so that we may honor you when your word comes to
pass?”
For it came to
pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. And
Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground.
When the flame went up from the altar to the sky, the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame. When
Manoah and his wife saw this, they fell facedown to the ground.
And it came to pass, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.
And when the Philistines saw him, they selected thirty men to
accompany him.
And it came to
pass on the seventh day, that they said unto
Samson’s wife,
Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the
riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father’s house with fire: have ye called us to take that we have? is it not so?
So on the fourth day they said to
Samson’s wife, “
Entice your husband to explain the
riddle to us, or we will burn you and your father’s household to death. Did you
invite us here to
rob us?”
And she
wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to
pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she lay
sore upon him: and she told the
riddle to the children of her people.
She
wept the whole seven days of the feast, and finally on the seventh day, because she had pressed him so much, he told her the answer. And in turn she explained the
riddle to her people.
But it came to
pass within a while after, in the time of wheat harvest, that
Samson visited his wife with a
kid; and he said, I will go in to my wife into the chamber. But her father would not suffer him to go in.
Later on, at the time of the wheat harvest,
Samson took a young goat and went to visit his wife. “I want to go to my wife in her room,” he said. But her father would not let him enter.
And it came to
pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the
jawbone out of his hand, and called that place Ramath-lehi.

Samson had finished speaking, he cast the
jawbone from his hand; and he named that place Ramath-lehi.
And it came to
pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was
Delilah.

Samson fell in love with a woman in the Valley of Sorek, whose name was
Delilah.
And it came to
pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was
vexed unto death;
Finally, after she had pressed him daily with her words and
pleaded until he was sick to death,
And it came to
pass, when their hearts were
merry, that they said, Call for
Samson, that he may make us
sport. And they called for
Samson out of the prison house; and he made them
sport: and they set him between the pillars.
And while their hearts were
merry, they said, “Call for
Samson to
entertain us.” So they called
Samson out of the prison to
entertain them. And they stationed him between the pillars.
And they
passed thence unto mount Ephraim, and came unto the house of
Micah.
And from there they traveled to the hill country of Ephraim and came to
Micah’s house.
And it came to
pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain
Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a
concubine out of Bethlehemjudah.
Now in those days, when there was no king in Israel, a
Levite who lived in the remote hill country of Ephraim took for himself a
concubine from
Bethlehem in Judah.
And it came to
pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the
damsel’s father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a
morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.
On the fourth day, they got up early in the morning and prepared to depart, but the
girl’s father said to his son-in-law, “Refresh your heart with a
morsel of bread, and then you can go.”
And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside
hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will
pass over to Gibeah.
But his master replied, “We will not turn aside to the city of foreigners, where there are no Israelites. We will go on to Gibeah.”
And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.
So they continued on their journey, and the sun set as they neared Gibeah in Benjamin.
And he said unto him, We are passing from Bethlehemjudah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Bethlehemjudah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.
The
Levite replied, “We are traveling from
Bethlehem in Judah to the remote hill country of Ephraim, where I am from. I went to
Bethlehem in Judah, and now I am going to the house of the LORD; but no one has taken me into his home,
And said, O LORD God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Israel?
“Why, O LORD God of Israel,” they
cried out, “has this happened in Israel?
Today in Israel one tribe is missing!”
And it came to
pass on the
morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.
The next day the people got up early, built an altar there, and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings.
Now it came to
pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehemjudah went to
sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.
In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land. And a certain man from
Bethlehem in Judah, with his wife and two sons, went to reside in the land of Moab.
So they two went until they came to
Bethlehem. And it came to
pass, when they were come to
Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, Is this
Naomi?
And it came to
pass at
midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself: and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.
At
midnight, Boaz was
startled, turned over, and there lying at his feet was a woman!
And it came to
pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that
Eli marked her mouth.
As
Hannah kept on praying before the LORD,
Eli watched her mouth.
Wherefore it came to
pass, when the time was come about after
Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.
So in the course of time,
Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the LORD.”
