But when he saw many of the
Pharisees and
Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath
warned you to
flee from the wrath to come?
But when John saw many of the
Pharisees and
Sadducees coming to his place of baptism, he said to them, “You
brood of vipers, who
warned you to
flee from the coming wrath?
For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the
scribes and
Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the
scribes and
Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
And when the
Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?
When the
Pharisees saw this, they asked His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the
Pharisees fast
oft, but thy disciples fast not?
At that time John’s disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Why is it that we and the
Pharisees fast so often, but Your disciples do not fast?”
But the
Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils.
But the
Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that He drives out demons.”
But when the
Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.
When the
Pharisees saw this, they said to Him, “Look, Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”
Then the
Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.
But when the
Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow
doth not cast out devils, but by
Beelzebub the prince of the devils.
But when the
Pharisees heard this, they said, “Only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, does this man drive out demons.”
Then certain of the
scribes and of the
Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.
Then some of the
scribes and
Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.”
Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the
Pharisees were
offended, after they heard this saying?
Then the disciples came to Him and said, “Are You aware that the
Pharisees were
offended when they heard this?”
Then the
Pharisees and
Sadducees came and tested Jesus by asking Him to show them a sign from heaven.
How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should
beware of the
leaven of the
Pharisees and of the
Sadducees?
The
Pharisees also came unto him,
tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
Then some
Pharisees came and tested Him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to
divorce his wife for any reason?”
And when the chief priests and
Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.
When the chief priests and
Pharisees heard His parables, they knew that Jesus was speaking about them.
But when the
Pharisees had heard that he had put the
Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.
And when the
Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the
Sadducees, they themselves gathered together.
While the
Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
While the
Pharisees were assembled, Jesus questioned them:
But
woe unto you,
scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in
yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
Woe to you,
scribes and
Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You
yourselves do not enter, nor will you let in those who wish to enter.
Woe to you,
scribes and
Pharisees, you hypocrites! You
traverse land and sea to
win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of
hell as you are.
Woe unto you,
scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay
tithe of
mint and
anise and
cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
Woe to you,
scribes and
Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay
tithes of
mint,
dill, and
cumin. But you have disregarded the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.
Thou blind
Pharisee,
cleanse first that which is within the cup and
platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
Blind
Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and
dish, so that the outside may become clean as well.
Woe unto you,
scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited
sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.
Woe to you,
scribes and
Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like
whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside, but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of impurity.
Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and
Pharisees came together unto
Pilate,
The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and
Pharisees assembled before
Pilate.
And when the
scribes and
Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?
When the
scribes who were
Pharisees saw Jesus eating with these people, they asked His disciples, “Why does He eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
And the disciples of John and of the
Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the
Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?
Now John’s disciples and the
Pharisees were often fasting. So people came to Jesus and asked, “Why don’t Your disciples fast like John’s disciples and those of the
Pharisees?”
And the
Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?
So the
Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”
Then came together unto him the
Pharisees, and certain of the
scribes, which came from Jerusalem.
Then the
Pharisees and some of the
scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus,
For the
Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands
oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.
Now in holding to the tradition of the elders, the
Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat until they wash their hands
ceremonially.
Then the
Pharisees and
scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with
unwashen hands?
So the
Pharisees and
scribes questioned Jesus: “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders? Instead, they eat with
defiled hands.”
And the
Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven,
tempting him.
Then the
Pharisees came and began to
argue with Jesus, testing Him by demanding from Him a sign from heaven.
And the
Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife?
tempting him.
Some
Pharisees came to test Him. “Is it lawful for a man to
divorce his wife?” they inquired.
And they send unto him certain of the
Pharisees and of the
Herodians, to catch him in his words.
And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were
Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of
Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to
heal them.
One day Jesus was teaching, and the
Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. People had come from Jerusalem and from every village of
Galilee and
Judea, and the power of the Lord was present for Him to
heal the sick.
And the
scribes and the
Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can
forgive sins, but God alone?
But their
scribes and
Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?
And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the
Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?
Then they said to Him, “John’s disciples and those of the
Pharisees frequently fast and pray, but Yours keep on eating and drinking.”
And certain of the
Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?
But some of the
Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”
And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.
But the
Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not
baptized of him.
But the
Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been
baptized by John.
And one of the
Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the
Pharisee’s house, and sat down to meat.
Then one of the
Pharisees invited Jesus to eat with him, and He entered the
Pharisee’s house and
reclined at the table.
And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a
sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the
Pharisee’s house, brought an
alabaster box of
ointment,
Now when the
Pharisee which had
bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a
sinner.
When the
Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, He would know who this is and what kind of woman is touching Him—for she is a
sinner!”
And as he spake, a certain
Pharisee besought him to
dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat.
As Jesus was speaking, a
Pharisee invited Him to
dine with him; so He went in and
reclined at the table.
And when the
Pharisee saw it, he
marvelled that he had not first washed before
dinner.
But the Pharisee was surprised to see that Jesus did not first wash before the meal.
And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye
Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the
platter; but your inward part is full of
ravening and wickedness.
“Now then,” said the Lord, “you
Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and
dish, but inside you are full of
greed and wickedness.
But
woe unto you,
Pharisees! for ye
tithe mint and
rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
Woe to you
Pharisees! You pay
tithes of
mint,
rue, and every
herb, but you disregard justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without neglecting the former.
Woe unto you,
Pharisees! for ye love the
uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets.
Woe to you
Pharisees! You love the chief seats in the synagogues and the greetings in the marketplaces.
Woe unto you,
scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them.
Woe to you! For you are like unmarked graves, which men walk over without even noticing.”
As Jesus went on from there, the
scribes and
Pharisees began to
oppose Him bitterly and to
ply Him with questions about many things,
In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people,
insomuch that they
trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all,
Beware ye of the
leaven of the
Pharisees, which is
hypocrisy.
In the meantime, a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were
trampling one another. Jesus began to speak first to His disciples: “
Beware of the
leaven of the
Pharisees, which is
hypocrisy.
The same day there came certain of the
Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee.
At that very hour, some
Pharisees came to Jesus and told Him, “Leave this place and get away, because Herod wants to kill You.”
And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief
Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.
One Sabbath, Jesus went to eat in the home of a leading Pharisee, and those in attendance were watching Him closely.
And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and
Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to
heal on the sabbath day?
So Jesus asked the experts in the law and the
Pharisees, “Is it lawful to
heal on the Sabbath or not?”
The
Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all of this and were
scoffing at Jesus.
And when he was demanded of the
Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:
When asked by the
Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The kingdom of God will not come with observable signs.
Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a
Pharisee, and the other a
publican.
“Two men went up to the temple to pray. One was a
Pharisee and the other a tax
collector.
The
Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I
thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this
publican.
The
Pharisee stood by himself and prayed, ‘God, I
thank You that I am not like the other men—swindlers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax
collector.
I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be
abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be
exalted.
I tell you, this man, rather than the
Pharisee, went home justified. For
everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be
exalted.”
And some of the
Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master,
rebuke thy disciples.
But some of the
Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher,
rebuke Your disciples!”
And they which were sent were of the
Pharisees.
When therefore the Lord knew how the
Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and
baptized more disciples than John,
When Jesus realized that the
Pharisees were aware He was gaining and
baptizing more disciples than John
The
Pharisees heard that the people
murmured such things concerning him; and the
Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.
When the
Pharisees heard the crowd
whispering these things about Jesus, they and the chief priests sent officers to arrest Him.
Then came the officers to the chief priests and
Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?
Then the officers returned to the chief priests and
Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring Him in?”
Have any of the rulers or of the
Pharisees believed on him?
“Have any of the rulers or
Pharisees believed in Him?
The
Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of
thyself; thy record is not true.
They brought to the
Pharisees the man who had been blind.
Then again the
Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.
So the
Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. The man answered, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see.”
Therefore said some of the
Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a
sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.
Because of this, some of the
Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for He does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a sinful man perform such signs?” And there was division among them.
And some of the
Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?
Some of the
Pharisees who were with Him heard this, and they asked Him, “Are we blind too?”
But some of them went their ways to the
Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
But some of them went to the
Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
Then gathered the chief priests and the
Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.
Now both the chief priests and the
Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should
shew it, that they might take him.
But the chief priests and
Pharisees had given orders that
anyone who knew where He was must report it, so that they could arrest Him.
The
Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.
Then the
Pharisees said to one another, “You can see that this is doing you no good. Look how the whole world has gone after Him!”
Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the
Pharisees they did not
confess him, lest they should be put out of the
synagogue:
Nevertheless, many of the leaders believed in Him; but because of the
Pharisees they did not
confess Him, for fear that they would be put out of the
synagogue.
Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and
Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.
So
Judas brought a band of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and
Pharisees. They arrived at the garden carrying lanterns, torches, and weapons.
Then stood there up one in the council, a
Pharisee, named
Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space;
But a
Pharisee named
Gamaliel, a teacher of the law who was honored by all the people, stood up in the
Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a short time.
But there rose up certain of the sect of the
Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to
circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.
But some believers from the party of the
Pharisees stood up and declared, “The Gentiles must be
circumcised and required to obey the law of Moses.”
But when Paul perceived that the one part were
Sadducees, and the other
Pharisees, he
cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a
Pharisee, the son of a
Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.
Then Paul, knowing that some of them were
Sadducees and others
Pharisees, called out in the
Sanhedrin, “Brothers, I am a
Pharisee, the son of a
Pharisee. It is because of my hope in the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial.”
As soon as he had said this, a dispute broke out between the
Pharisees and
Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.
For the
Sadducees say that there is neither a resurrection, nor angels, nor spirits, but the
Pharisees acknowledge them all.
And there arose a great cry: and the
scribes that were of the
Pharisees’ part arose, and
strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.
A great
clamor arose, and some
scribes from the party of the
Pharisees got up and
contended sharply, “We find nothing wrong with this man. What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”
Which knew me from the beginning, if they would
testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a
Pharisee.
They have known me for a long time and can
testify, if they are willing, that I lived as a
Pharisee,
adhering to the strictest sect of our religion.
Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a
Pharisee;
circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin; a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a
Pharisee;
