And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that
mocked unto his sons in law.
So Lot went out and spoke to the sons-in-law who were
pledged in marriage to his daughters. “Get up,” he said. “Get out of this place, for the LORD is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was
joking.
And he said, I will send thee a
kid from the flock. And she said,
Wilt thou give me a
pledge, till thou send it?
“I will send you a young goat from my flock,” Judah answered. But she replied, “Only if you leave me something as a pledge until you send it.”
And he said, What
pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy
signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.
“What
pledge should I give you?” he asked. She answered, “Your seal and your cord, and the staff in your hand.” So he gave them to her and
slept with her, and she became
pregnant by him.
And Judah sent the
kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his
pledge from the woman’s hand: but he found her not.
Now when Judah sent his friend Hirah the Adullamite with the young goat to collect the items he had left with the woman, he could not find her.
If a man seduces a virgin who is not
pledged in marriage and sleeps with her, he must pay the full
dowry for her to be his wife.
If thou at all take thy neighbour’s
raiment to
pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him by that the sun goeth down:
If a man
vow a
vow unto the LORD, or
swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.
If a man makes a
vow to the LORD or swears an oath to
obligate himself by a
pledge, he must not break his word; he must do everything he has promised.
If a woman also
vow a
vow unto the LORD, and bind herself by a bond, being in her father’s house in her youth;
And if a woman in her father’s house during her youth makes a
vow to the LORD or obligates herself by a
pledge,
And her father hear her
vow, and her bond
wherewith she hath bound her soul, and her father shall hold his peace at her: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond
wherewith she hath bound her soul shall stand.
and her father hears about her
vow or
pledge but says nothing to her, then all the vows or
pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand.
But if her father disallow her in the day that he heareth; not any of her vows, or of her bonds
wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand: and the LORD shall
forgive her, because her father disallowed her.
But if her father prohibits her on the day he hears about it, then none of the vows or
pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand. The LORD will
absolve her because her father has prohibited her.
And her husband heard it, and held his peace at her in the day that he heard it: then her vows shall stand, and her bonds
wherewith she bound her soul shall stand.
and her husband hears of it but says nothing to her on that day, then the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand.
But every
vow of a widow, and of her that is
divorced,
wherewith they have bound their souls, shall stand against her.
And her husband heard it, and held his peace at her, and disallowed her not: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond
wherewith she bound her soul shall stand.
and her husband hears of it but says nothing to her and does not
prohibit her, then all the vows or
pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand.
But if her husband hath utterly made them void on the day he heard them; then
whatsoever proceeded out of her lips concerning her vows, or concerning the bond of her soul, shall not stand: her husband hath made them void; and the LORD shall
forgive her.
But if her husband nullifies them on the day he hears of them, then nothing that came from her lips, whether her vows or
pledges, shall stand. Her husband has
nullified them, and the LORD will
absolve her.
Every
vow, and every binding oath to
afflict the soul, her husband may establish it, or her husband may make it void.
But if her husband altogether hold his peace at her from day to day; then he establisheth all her vows, or all her bonds, which are upon her: he confirmeth them, because he held his peace at her in the day that he heard them.
But if her husband says nothing to her from day to day, then he confirms all the vows and pledges that bind her. He has confirmed them, because he said nothing to her on the day he heard about them.
And what man is there that hath
betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.
Has any man become
pledged to a woman and not married her? Let him return home, or he may die in battle and another man marry her.”
If a
damsel that is a virgin be
betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her;
If there is a virgin
pledged in marriage to a man, and another man encounters her in the city and sleeps with her,
If a man find a
damsel that is a virgin, which is not
betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found;
If a man encounters a virgin who is not
pledged in marriage, and he seizes her and lies with her, and they are discovered,
No man shall take the
nether or the upper
millstone to
pledge: for he taketh a man’s life to
pledge.
Do not take a pair of millstones or even an upper
millstone as security for a debt, because that would be taking one’s
livelihood as security.
When thou
dost lend thy brother any thing, thou shalt not go into his house to
fetch his
pledge.
When you
lend anything to your
neighbor, do not enter his house to collect security.
Thou shalt stand abroad, and the man to whom thou
dost lend shall bring out the
pledge abroad unto thee.
You are to stand outside while the man to whom you are
lending brings the security out to you.
And if the man be poor, thou shalt not sleep with his pledge:
If he is a poor man, you must not go to sleep with the security in your possession;
In any case thou shalt deliver him the
pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own
raiment, and
bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the LORD thy God.
be sure to return it to him by
sunset, so that he may sleep in his own
cloak and
bless you, and this will be credited to you as righteousness before the LORD your God.
Thou shalt not
pervert the judgment of the stranger, nor of the fatherless; nor take a widow’s
raiment to
pledge:
Do not deny justice to the foreigner or the fatherless, and do not take a widow’s
cloak as security.
Thou shalt
betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her: thou shalt build an house, and thou shalt not dwell therein: thou shalt plant a
vineyard, and shalt not gather the grapes thereof.
You will be
pledged in marriage to a woman, but another man will
violate her. You will build a house but will not live in it. You will plant a
vineyard but will not enjoy its fruit.
And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren
fare, and take their
pledge.
Take also these ten portions of
cheese to the commander of their unit. Check on the
welfare of your brothers and bring back an assurance from them.
Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my lord the king of Assyria, and I will deliver thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
Now, therefore, make a
bargain with my master, the king of Assyria. I will give you two thousand horses—if you can put riders on them!
And all the princes, and the mighty men, and all the sons likewise of king David, submitted themselves unto Solomon the king.
All the officials and mighty men, as well as all of King David’s sons,
pledged their allegiance to King Solomon.
And they gave their hands that they would put away their wives; and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their
trespass.
Maaseiah,
Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah. They
pledged to send their wives away, and for their guilt they presented a ram from the flock as a guilt offering.
Lay down now, put me in a
surety with thee; who is he that will strike hands with me?
Give me, I pray, the
pledge You demand. Who else will be my
guarantor?
For thou hast taken a
pledge from thy brother for
nought, and
stripped the naked of their clothing.
For you
needlessly demanded security from your brothers and deprived the naked of their clothing.
They drive away the
ass of the fatherless, they take the widow’s ox for a
pledge.
They drive away the
donkey of the fatherless and take the widow’s ox in
pledge.
They
pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a
pledge of the poor.
The fatherless infant is
snatched from the breast; the
nursing child of the poor is seized for a debt.
My son, if thou be
surety for thy friend, if thou hast
stricken thy hand with a stranger,
My son, if you have put up security for your
neighbor, if you have struck hands in
pledge with a stranger,
A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh
surety in the presence of his friend.
A man lacking judgment strikes hands in
pledge and puts up security for his
neighbor.
Take his garment that is
surety for a stranger: and take a
pledge of him for a strange woman.
Take the garment of the one who posts security for a stranger; get
collateral if it is for a foreigner.
Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are
sureties for debts.
Do not be one who gives pledges, who puts up security for debts.
Take his garment that is
surety for a stranger, and take a
pledge of him for a strange woman.
Take the garment of him who posts security for a stranger; get
collateral if it is for a foreigner.
Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
Now, therefore, make a
bargain with my master, the king of Assyria. I will give you two thousand horses—if you can put riders on them!
Now when I passed by thee, and looked upon thee, behold, thy time was the time of love; and I spread my
skirt over thee, and covered thy nakedness:
yea, I
sware unto thee, and entered into a covenant with thee, saith the Lord GOD, and thou becamest mine.
Then I passed by and saw you, and you were indeed old enough for love. So I spread My
cloak over you and covered your nakedness. I
pledged Myself to you, entered into a covenant with you, and you became Mine, declares the Lord GOD.
Seeing he
despised the oath by breaking the covenant, when, lo, he had given his hand, and hath done all these things, he shall not escape.
He
despised the oath by breaking the covenant. Seeing that he gave his hand in
pledge yet did all these things, he will not escape!’
And hath not
oppressed any, but hath restored to the
debtor his
pledge, hath
spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the
hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;
He does not
oppress another, but restores the
pledge to the
debtor. He does not commit
robbery, but gives his bread to the
hungry and covers the naked with clothing.
Hath
oppressed the poor and
needy, hath
spoiled by violence, hath not restored the
pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed
abomination,
He oppresses the poor and
needy; he commits
robbery and does not restore a
pledge. He lifts his eyes to idols; he commits abominations.
Neither hath
oppressed any, hath not
withholden the
pledge, neither hath
spoiled by violence, but hath given his bread to the
hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment,
He does not
oppress another, or retain a
pledge, or commit
robbery. He gives his bread to the
hungry and covers the naked with clothing.
If the wicked restore the
pledge, give again that he had
robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without
committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.
if he restores a
pledge, makes
restitution for what he has
stolen, and walks in the statutes of life without practicing iniquity—then he will surely live; he will not die.
And they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar, and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.
They lie down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge. And in the house of their God, they drink wine obtained through fines.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was
espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was
pledged in marriage to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
To a virgin
espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.
to a virgin
pledged in marriage to a man named Joseph, who was of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary.
To be taxed with Mary his
espoused wife, being great with child.
He went there to register with Mary, who was
pledged to him in marriage and was expecting a child.
Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
placed His seal on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts as a pledge of what is to come.
Now he that hath wrought us for the
selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.
And God has prepared us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a pledge of what is to come.
Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the
redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
who is the
pledge of our inheritance until the
redemption of those who are God’s possession, to the praise of His glory.
The like figure
whereunto even baptism
doth also now save us (not the putting away of the
filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
And this water symbolizes the baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of
dirt from the body, but the
pledge of a clear conscience toward God—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
Now the sun being newly risen, they joined both together; the one part having together with their virtue their refuge also unto the Lord for a
pledge of their success and victory: the other side making their
rage leader of their battle
