Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images.
You must not bow down to their gods or serve them or follow their
practices. Instead, you are to
demolish them and
smash their sacred stones to pieces.
After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of
Canaan,
whither I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk in their ordinances.
You must not follow the
practices of the land of Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not follow the
practices of the land of
Canaan, into which I am bringing you. You must not walk in their customs.
Ye shall do my judgments, and keep mine ordinances, to walk therein: I am the LORD your God.
You are to practice My judgments and keep My statutes by walking in them. I am the LORD your God.
Defile not ye
yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are
defiled which I cast out before you:
Do not
defile yourselves by any of these
practices, for by all these things the nations I am driving out before you have
defiled themselves.
Therefore shall ye keep mine
ordinance, that ye commit not any one of these
abominable customs, which were committed before you, and that ye
defile not
yourselves therein: I am the LORD your God.
You must keep My charge not to
practice any of the
abominable customs that were
practiced before you, so that you do not
defile yourselves by them. I am the LORD your God.”
Ye shall not eat any thing with the blood: neither shall ye use
enchantment, nor observe times.
You must not eat anything with blood still in it. You must not
practice divination or
sorcery.
And ye shall keep my statutes, and do them: I am the LORD which
sanctify you.
And you shall keep My statutes and practice them. I am the LORD who sanctifies you.
Therefore shall ye keep my commandments, and do them: I am the LORD.
You are to keep My commandments and practice them. I am the LORD.
If they shall
confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their
trespass which they
trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me;
But if they will
confess their iniquity and that of their fathers in the unfaithfulness that they
practiced against Me, by which they have also walked in hostility toward Me—
Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God: for every
abomination to the LORD, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.
You must not worship the LORD your God in this way, because they
practice for their gods every
abomination which the LORD hates. They even burn their sons and daughters in the fire as sacrifices to their gods.
There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth
divination, or an observer of times, or an
enchanter, or a
witch,
Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire,
practices divination or
conjury, interprets omens,
practices sorcery,
Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to do them. And all the people shall say,
Amen.
‘
Cursed is he who does not put the words of this law into
practice.’ And let all the people say, ‘
Amen!’
And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their
stubborn way.
But when the judge died, the Israelites became even more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods to serve them and bow down to them. They would not give up their evil
practices and
stubborn ways.
And walked in the statutes of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made.
and walked in the customs of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites, as well as in the practices introduced by the kings of Israel.
And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used
divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, to
provoke him to anger.
They sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire and
practiced divination and
soothsaying. They devoted themselves to doing evil in the sight of the LORD,
provoking Him to anger.
Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the LORD, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel;
To this day they are still practicing their former customs. None of them worship the LORD or observe the statutes, ordinances, laws, and commandments that the LORD gave the descendants of Jacob, whom He named Israel.
And he made his son pass through the fire, and observed times, and used enchantments, and dealt with familiar spirits and wizards: he wrought much wickedness in the sight of the LORD, to
provoke him to anger.
He sacrificed his own son in the fire,
practiced sorcery and
divination, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did great evil in the sight of the LORD,
provoking Him to anger.
But sought to the LORD God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel.
but he sought the God of his father and walked by His commandments rather than the practices of Israel.
And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of
Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used
witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the LORD, to
provoke him to anger.
He sacrificed his sons in the fire in the Valley of
Hinnom. He
practiced sorcery,
divination, and
witchcraft, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did great evil in the sight of the LORD,
provoking Him to anger.
For
Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.
For
Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, to
practice it, and to teach its statutes and ordinances in Israel.
But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the
uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.
but if you return to Me and keep and
practice My commandments, then even if your exiles have been banished to the
farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for My Name.’
And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and
hearkened not unto thy commandments, but
sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and
hardened their neck, and would not hear.
You
admonished them to turn back to Your law, but they were
arrogant and disobeyed Your commandments. They
sinned against Your ordinances, by which a man will live if he
practices them. They
stubbornly shrugged their shoulders; they
stiffened their necks and would not obey.
And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and
sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have
sinned, and
cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
And when the days of feasting were over, Job would send for his children to
purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for all of them. For Job thought, “Perhaps my children have
sinned and
cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular
practice.
For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open
sepulchre; they
flatter with their tongue.
For not a word they speak can be trusted; destruction lies within them. Their throats are open graves; their tongues
practice deceit.
He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.
He who walks with
integrity and
practices righteousness, who speaks the truth from his heart,
He that worketh
deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not
tarry in my sight.
No one who
practices deceit shall dwell in my house; no one who tells lies shall stand in my presence.
Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times.
Blessed are those who
uphold justice, who
practice righteousness at all times.
This I had, because I kept thy precepts.
This is my practice, for I obey Your precepts.
There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
As no man has power over the wind to contain it, so no one has authority over his day of death. As no one can be discharged in wartime, so wickedness will not release those who practice it.
For the
vile person will speak
villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to
practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the
hungry, and he will cause the drink of the
thirsty to fail.
For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to
covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.
“For from the least of them to the greatest, all are
greedy for gain; from prophet to priest, all
practice deceit.
Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall
inherit them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest is given to
covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.
Therefore I will give their wives to other men and their fields to new owners. For from the least of them to the greatest, all are
greedy for gain; from prophet to priest, all
practice deceit.
But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy
covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.
“But your eyes and heart are set on nothing except your own
dishonest gain, on
shedding innocent blood, on
practicing extortion and oppression.”
Then he said unto me, Hast thou seen this, O son of man? Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit here? for they have filled the land with violence, and have returned to
provoke me to anger: and, lo, they put the branch to their nose.
“Son of man,” He said to me, “do you see this? Is it not enough for the house of Judah to commit the abominations they are
practicing here, that they must also fill the land with violence and continually
provoke Me to anger? Look, they are even putting the branch to their nose!
And ye shall know that I am the LORD: for ye have not walked in my statutes, neither executed my judgments, but have done after the manners of the heathen that are round about you.
Then you will know that I am the LORD. For you have neither followed My statutes nor
practiced My ordinances, but you have
conformed to the ordinances of the nations around you.”
That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.
so that they may follow My statutes, keep My ordinances, and practice them. Then they will be My people, and I will be their God.
Therefore ye shall see no more vanity, nor divine divinations: for I will deliver my people out of your hand: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
therefore you will no longer see false visions or
practice divination. I will deliver My people from your hands. Then you will know that I am the LORD.”
Yet hast thou not walked after their ways, nor done after their abominations: but, as if that were a very little thing, thou
wast corrupted more than they in all thy ways.
And you not only walked in their ways and
practiced their abominations, but soon you were more
depraved than they were.
As for his father, because he cruelly
oppressed,
spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.
As for his father, he will die for his own iniquity, because he
practiced extortion,
robbed his brother, and did what was wrong among his people.
All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.
None of the transgressions he has committed will be held against him. Because of the righteousness he has practiced, he will live.
But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his
trespass that he hath
trespassed, and in his sin that he hath
sinned, in them shall he die.
But if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and
practices iniquity,
committing the same abominations as the wicked, will he live? None of the righteous acts he did will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness and sin he has committed, he will die.
When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.
If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and practices iniquity, he will die for this. He will die because of the iniquity he has committed.
I am the LORD your God; walk in my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them;
I am the LORD your God; walk in My statutes, keep My ordinances, and practice them.
Because they had not executed my judgments, but had
despised my statutes, and had
polluted my sabbaths, and their eyes were after their fathers’ idols.
For they did not
practice My ordinances, but they rejected My statutes and
profaned My Sabbaths, fixing their eyes on the idols of their fathers.
The people of the land have
practiced extortion and committed
robbery. They have
oppressed the poor and
needy and have exploited the foreign resident without justice.
If the wicked restore the
pledge, give again that he had
robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without
committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.
if he restores a
pledge, makes
restitution for what he has
stolen, and walks in the statutes of life without
practicing iniquity—then he will surely live; he will not die.
And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they
shew much love, but their heart goeth after their
covetousness.
So My people come to you as usual, sit before you, and hear your words; but they do not put them into
practice. Although they express love with their mouths, their hearts pursue
dishonest gain.
And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not.
Indeed, you are to them like a singer of love songs with a beautiful voice, who
skillfully plays an instrument. They hear your words but do not put them into
practice.
When I would have
healed Israel, then the iniquity of Ephraim was discovered, and the wickedness of Samaria: for they commit
falsehood; and the
thief cometh in, and the
troop of robbers spoileth without.
When I
heal Israel, the iniquity of Ephraim will be exposed, as well as the crimes of Samaria. For they
practice deceit and
thieves break in;
bandits raid in the streets.
The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for
hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they
lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us.
Her leaders judge for a
bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets
practice divination for money. Yet they
lean upon the LORD, saying, “Is not the LORD among us? No
disaster can come upon us.”
For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of
Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I should make thee a
desolation, and the inhabitants thereof an
hissing: therefore ye shall bear the reproach of my people.
You have kept the statutes of Omri and all the
practices of
Ahab’s house; you have followed their counsel. Therefore I will make you a
desolation, and your inhabitants an object of contempt; you will bear the
scorn of the nations.”
Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but
whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
So then,
whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do likewise will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but
whoever practices and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that
offend, and them which do iniquity;
The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will
weed out of His kingdom every cause of sin and all who
practice lawlessness.
All therefore
whatsoever they
bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
So
practice and observe everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not
practice what they
preach.
Woe unto you,
scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay
tithe of
mint and
anise and
cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
Woe to you,
scribes and
Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay
tithes of
mint,
dill, and
cumin. But you have disregarded the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faithfulness. You should have
practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.
But
woe unto you,
Pharisees! for ye
tithe mint and
rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
Woe to you
Pharisees! You pay
tithes of
mint,
rue, and every
herb, but you disregard justice and the love of God. You should have
practiced the latter without neglecting the former.
But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
But
whoever practices the truth comes into the Light, so that it may be seen clearly that what he has done has been accomplished in God.”
But there was a certain man, called Simon, which
beforetime in the same city used
sorcery, and
bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:
Prior to that time, a man named Simon had
practiced sorcery in the city and
astounded the people of Samaria. He claimed to be someone great,
And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.
by promoting customs that are unlawful for us Romans to adopt or practice.”
Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.
And a number of those who had
practiced magic arts brought their books and burned them in front of
everyone. When the value of the books was calculated, the total came to fifty thousand
drachmas.
Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things are worthy of death, they not only continue to do these things, but also
approve of those who
practice them.
Their throat is an open
sepulchre; with their tongues they have used
deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
“Their throats are open graves; their tongues
practice deceit.” “The
venom of vipers is on their lips.”
Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to
hospitality.
Share with the saints who are in need.
Practice hospitality.
But if any man seem to be
contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
If
anyone is inclined to dispute this, we have no other
practice, nor do the churches of God.
Instead, we have
renounced secret and shameful ways. We do not
practice deceit, nor do we
distort the word of God. On the contrary, by open
proclamation of the truth, we
commend ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.
He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Does God
lavish His Spirit on you and work miracles among you because you
practice the law, or because you hear and believe?
Envyings, murders,
drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not
inherit the kingdom of God.
Having lost all sense of shame, they have given themselves over to
sensuality for the
practice of every kind of impurity, with a
craving for more.
Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me, put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
Do not lie to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices,
For where
envying and
strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
For where jealousy and
selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil
practice.
Wherefore the rather, brethren, give
diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
Therefore, brothers,
strive to make your calling and election sure. For if you
practice these things you will never
stumble,
Having eyes full of
adultery, and that cannot cease from sin;
beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with
covetous practices;
cursed children:
Their eyes are full of
adultery; their desire for sin is never satisfied; they
seduce the unstable. They are
accursed children with hearts trained in
greed.
If we say that we have
fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
If we say we have
fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not
practice the truth.
If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.
If you know that He is righteous, you also know that
everyone who
practices righteousness has been born of Him.
Little children, let no man
deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
Little children, let no one
deceive you: The one who
practices righteousness is righteous, just as Christ is righteous.
He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
The one who
practices sin is of the devil, because the devil has been
sinning from the very start. This is why the Son of God was revealed, to destroy the works of the devil.
Whosoever is born of God
doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
Anyone born of God refuses to
practice sin, because God’s seed abides in him; he cannot go on
sinning, because he has been born of God.
In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil:
whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
By this the children of God are distinguished from the children of the devil:
Anyone who does not
practice righteousness is not of God, nor is
anyone who does not love his brother.
And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither
whatsoever worketh
abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor
anyone who
practices an
abomination or a lie, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is
filthy, let him be
filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.
Let the unrighteous continue to be unrighteous, and the
vile continue to be
vile; let the righteous continue to
practice righteousness, and the holy continue to be holy.”
For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and
whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
But outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters, and
everyone who loves and
practices falsehood.
Bear not hatred to thy neighbour for every wrong; and do nothing at all by injurious practices.
