And Jacob
said unto his father, I am
Esau thy
firstborn; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my
venison, that thy soul may
bless me.
Jacob
said to his father, “I am
Esau, your
firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may
bless me.”
And Isaac said unto his son, How is it that thou hast found it so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the LORD thy God brought it to me.
But Isaac asked his son, “How did you ever find it so quickly, my son?” “Because the LORD your God brought it to me,” he replied.
And Isaac
said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son
Esau or not.
Then Isaac
said to Jacob, “Please come closer so I can touch you, my son. Are you really my son
Esau, or not?”
And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and
said, The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of
Esau.
So Jacob came close to his father Isaac, who touched him and
said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of
Esau.”
And he
said, Art thou my very son
Esau? And he
said, I am.
Again he asked, “Are you really my son
Esau?” And he replied, “I am.”
And he
said, Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s
venison, that my soul may
bless thee. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat: and he brought him wine, and he
drank.
“Serve me,”
said Isaac, “and let me eat some of my son’s game, so that I may
bless you.” Jacob brought it to him, and he
ate; then he brought him wine, and he
drank.
And his father Isaac
said unto him, Come near now, and
kiss me, my son.
Then his father Isaac
said to him, “Please come near and
kiss me, my son.”
And he came near, and
kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his
raiment, and blessed him, and
said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed:
So he came near and
kissed him. When Isaac smelled his clothing, he blessed him and
said: “
Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the LORD has blessed.
And he also had made savoury meat, and brought it unto his father, and
said unto his father, Let my father arise, and eat of his son’s
venison, that thy soul may
bless me.
He too made some
tasty food, brought it to his father, and
said to him, “My father, sit up and eat of your son’s game, so that you may
bless me.”
And Isaac his father
said unto him, Who art thou? And he
said, I am thy son, thy
firstborn Esau.
But his father Isaac replied, “Who are you?” “I am
Esau, your
firstborn son,” he answered.
And Isaac
trembled very exceedingly, and
said, Who? where is he that hath taken
venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before thou camest, and have blessed him?
yea, and he shall be blessed.
Isaac began to
tremble violently and
said, “Who was it, then, who
hunted the game and brought it to me? Before you came in, I
ate it all and blessed him—and indeed, he will be blessed!”
And when
Esau heard the words of his father, he
cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and
said unto his father,
Bless me, even me also, O my father.
When
Esau heard his father’s words, he let out a loud and bitter cry and
said to his father, “
Bless me too, O my father!”
And he
said, Thy brother came with
subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing.
But Isaac replied, “Your brother came
deceitfully and took your blessing.”
And he
said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath
supplanted me these two times: he took away my
birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he
said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me?
So
Esau declared, “Is he not rightly named Jacob? For he has
cheated me twice. He took my
birthright, and now he has taken my blessing.” Then he asked, “
Haven’t you saved a blessing for me?”
And Isaac answered and
said unto
Esau, Behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now unto thee, my son?
But Isaac answered
Esau: “Look, I have made him your master and given him all his relatives as servants; I have sustained him with grain and new wine. What is left that I can do for you, my son?”
And
Esau said unto his father, Hast thou but one blessing, my father?
bless me, even me also, O my father. And
Esau lifted up his voice, and
wept.
Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father?
Bless me too, O my father!” Then
Esau wept aloud.
And Isaac his father answered and
said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the
dew of heaven from above;
His father Isaac answered him: “Behold, your dwelling place shall be away from the richness of the land, away from the
dew of heaven above.
And
Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing
wherewith his father blessed him: and
Esau said in his heart, The days of
mourning for my father are at hand; then will I
slay my brother Jacob.
Esau held a
grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. And
Esau said in his heart, “The days of
mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
And these words of
Esau her elder son were told to
Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and
said unto him, Behold, thy brother
Esau, as touching thee,
doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee.
When the words of her older son
Esau were relayed to
Rebekah, she sent for her younger son Jacob and told him, “Look, your brother
Esau is
consoling himself by
plotting to kill you.
And
Rebekah said to Isaac, I am
weary of my life because of the daughters of
Heth: if Jacob take a wife of the daughters of
Heth, such as these which are of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me?
Then
Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am
weary of my life because of these Hittite women. If Jacob takes a Hittite wife from among them, what good is my life?”
And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and
said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of
Canaan.
So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him. “Do not take a wife from the
Canaanite women,” he commanded.
And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and
said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land
whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
And there at the top the LORD was standing and saying, “I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you now lie.
And Jacob
awaked out of his sleep, and he
said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.
When Jacob
woke up, he thought, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was unaware of it.”
And he was afraid, and
said, How
dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
And he was afraid and
said, “How
awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven!”
And Jacob
said unto them, My brethren, whence be ye? And they
said, Of
Haran are we.
“My brothers,” Jacob asked the
shepherds, “where are you from?” “We are from
Haran,” they answered.
And he
said unto them, Know ye
Laban the son of
Nahor? And they
said, We know him.
“Do you know
Laban the grandson of
Nahor?” Jacob asked. “We know him,” they replied.
And he
said unto them, Is he well? And they
said, He is well: and, behold,
Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep.
“Is he well?” Jacob inquired. “
Yes,” they answered, “and here comes his daughter
Rachel with his sheep.”
And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them.
“Look,”
said Jacob, “it is still broad
daylight; it is not yet time to gather the
livestock. Water the sheep and take them back to pasture.”
And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well’s mouth; then we water the sheep.
But they replied, “We cannot, until all the flocks have been gathered and the stone has been rolled away from the mouth of the well. Then we will water the sheep.”
And
Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month.
Then
Laban declared, “You are indeed my own flesh and blood.” After Jacob had stayed with him a month,
And
Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for
nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be?
Laban said to him, “Just because you are my relative, should you work for nothing? Tell me what your wages should be.”
And Jacob loved
Rachel; and
said, I will serve thee seven years for
Rachel thy younger daughter.
Since Jacob loved
Rachel, he answered, “I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter
Rachel.”
And
Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man:
abide with me.
Laban replied, “Better that I give her to you than to another. Stay here with me.”
And Jacob
said unto
Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her.
Finally Jacob
said to
Laban, “Grant me my wife, for my time is complete, and I want to sleep with her.”
And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he
said to
Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for
Rachel? wherefore then hast thou
beguiled me?
When morning came, there was Leah! “What have you done to me?” Jacob
said to
Laban. “Wasn’t it for
Rachel that I served you? Why have you
deceived me?”
And
Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the
firstborn.
Laban replied, “It is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older.
And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name
Reuben: for she
said, Surely the LORD hath looked upon my
affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.
And Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she named him
Reuben, for she
said, “The LORD has seen my
affliction. Surely my husband will love me now.”
And she conceived again, and bare a son; and
said, Because the LORD hath heard that I was
hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name
Simeon.
Again she conceived and gave birth to a son, and she
said, “Because the LORD has heard that I am unloved, He has given me this son as well.” So she named him
Simeon.
And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.
Once again Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.
And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the LORD: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing.
And once more she conceived and gave birth to a son and said, “This time I will praise the LORD.” So she named him Judah. Then Leah stopped having children.
And when
Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children,
Rachel envied her sister; and
said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.
When
Rachel saw that she was not bearing any children for Jacob, she
envied her sister. “Give me children, or I will die!” she
said to Jacob.
Jacob became
angry with
Rachel and
said, “Am I in the place of God, who has
withheld children from you?”
And she
said, Behold my
maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees that I may also have children by her.
Then she
said, “Here is my
maidservant Bilhah. Sleep with her, that she may bear children for me, so that through her I too can build a family.”
And
Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son: therefore called she his name
Dan.
And
Rachel said, With great wrestlings have I
wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called his name
Naphtali.
And Leah
said, A
troop cometh: and she called his name
Gad.
Then Leah
said, “How fortunate!” So she named him
Gad.
And Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed: and she called his name Asher.
Leah said, “How happy I am! For the women call me happy.” So she named him Asher.
And
Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them unto his mother Leah. Then
Rachel said to Leah, Give me, I pray thee, of thy son’s mandrakes.
Now during the wheat harvest,
Reuben went out and found some mandrakes in the field. When he brought them to his mother,
Rachel begged Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”
And she
said unto her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son’s mandrakes also? And
Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee to night for thy son’s mandrakes.
But Leah replied, “Is it not enough that you have taken away my husband? Now you want to take my son’s mandrakes as well?” “Very well,”
said Rachel, “he may sleep with you
tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.”
And Jacob came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and
said, Thou must come in unto me; for surely I have
hired thee with my son’s mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.
When Jacob came in from the field that evening, Leah went out to meet him and
said, “You must come with me, for I have
hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he
slept with her that night.
And Leah
said, God hath given me my
hire, because I have given my
maiden to my husband: and she called his name
Issachar.
Then Leah
said, “God has rewarded me for giving my
maidservant to my husband.” So she named him
Issachar.
And Leah
said, God hath
endued me with a good
dowry; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have born him six sons: and she called his name
Zebulun.
“God has given me a good gift,” she
said. “This time my husband will honor me, because I have borne him six sons.” And she named him
Zebulun.
And she conceived, and bare a son; and said, God hath taken away my reproach:
and she conceived and gave birth to a son. “God has taken away my shame,” she said.
And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD shall add to me another son.
She named him Joseph, and said, “May the LORD add to me another son.”
And it came to pass, when
Rachel had born Joseph, that Jacob
said unto
Laban, Send me away, that I may go unto mine own place, and to my country.
Now after
Rachel had given birth to Joseph, Jacob
said to
Laban, “Send me on my way so I can return to my homeland.
And
Laban said unto him, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes,
tarry: for I have learned by experience that the LORD hath blessed me for thy sake.
But
Laban replied, “If I have found favor in your eyes, please stay. I have learned by
divination that the LORD has blessed me because of you.”
And he
said,
Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it.
And he added, “Name your wages, and I will pay them.”
And he said unto him, Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle was with me.
Then Jacob answered, “You know how I have served you and how your
livestock have
thrived under my care.
And he
said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob
said, Thou shalt not give me any thing: if thou
wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock:
“What can I give you?”
Laban asked. “You do not need to give me anything,” Jacob replied. “If you do this one thing for me, I will keep on
shepherding and keeping your flocks.
And
Laban said, Behold, I would it might be according to thy word.
“Agreed,”
said Laban. “Let it be as you have
said.”
And the LORD said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee.
Then the LORD said to Jacob, “Go back to the land of your fathers and to your kindred, and I will be with you.”
And said unto them, I see your father’s countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father hath been with me.
and he told them, “I can see from your father’s countenance that his attitude toward me has changed; but the God of my father has been with me.
If he
said, ‘The
speckled will be your wages,’ then the whole flock bore
speckled offspring. If he
said, ‘The
streaked will be your wages,’ then the whole flock bore
streaked offspring.
And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, Here am I.
In that dream the angel of God said to me, ‘Jacob!’ And I replied, ‘Here I am.’
‘Look up,’ he
said, ‘and see that all the males that are mating with the flock are
streaked,
spotted, or
speckled; for I have seen all that
Laban has done to you.
And
Rachel and Leah answered and
said unto him, Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father’s house?
And
Rachel and Leah replied, “Do we have any portion or inheritance left in our father’s house?
For all the riches which God hath taken from our father, that is ours, and our children’s: now then,
whatsoever God hath
said unto thee, do.
Surely all the wealth that God has taken away from our father belongs to us and to our children. So do whatever God has told you.”
And God came to
Laban the
Syrian in a dream by night, and
said unto him, Take
heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
But that night God came to
Laban the
Aramean in a dream and
warned him, “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.”
And
Laban said to Jacob, What hast thou done, that thou hast
stolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters, as
captives taken with the sword?
Then
Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done? You have
deceived me and carried off my daughters like
captives of war!
It is in the power of my hand to do you
hurt: but the God of your father spake unto me
yesternight, saying, Take thou
heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
I have power to do you great
harm, but last night the God of your father
said to me, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’
And Jacob answered and
said to
Laban, Because I was afraid: for I
said,
Peradventure thou wouldest take by force thy daughters from me.
“I was afraid,” Jacob answered, “for I thought you would take your daughters from me by force.
And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched, but found not the images.
Rachel said to her father, “Sir, do not be
angry that I cannot stand up before you; for I am having my period.” So
Laban searched, but could not find the household idols.
And Jacob was
wroth, and
chode with
Laban: and Jacob answered and
said to
Laban, What is my
trespass? what is my sin, that thou hast so hotly pursued after me?
Then Jacob became incensed and
challenged Laban. “What is my crime?” he
said. “For what sin of mine have you so hotly pursued me?
And
Laban answered and
said unto Jacob, These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that thou seest is mine: and what can I do this day unto these my daughters, or unto their children which they have born?
But
Laban answered Jacob, “These daughters are my daughters, these sons are my sons, and these flocks are my flocks! Everything you see is mine! Yet what can I do
today about these daughters of mine or the children they have borne?
And Jacob
said unto his brethren, Gather stones; and they took stones, and made an
heap: and they did eat there upon the
heap.
and he
said to his relatives, “Gather some stones.” So they took stones and made a
mound, and there by the
mound they
ate.
And
Laban said, This
heap is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it called Galeed;
Then
Laban declared, “This
mound is a witness between you and me this day.” Therefore the place was called Galeed.
And
Mizpah; for he
said, The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.
It was also called
Mizpah, because
Laban said, “May the LORD keep watch between you and me when we are absent from each other.
Laban also
said to Jacob, “Here is the
mound, and here is the
pillar I have set up between you and me.
And when Jacob saw them, he
said, This is God’s host: and he called the name of that place
Mahanaim.
When Jacob saw them, he
said, “This is the camp of God.” So he named that place
Mahanaim.
And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother
Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
When the messengers returned to Jacob, they
said, “We went to your brother
Esau, and now he is coming to meet you—he and four hundred men with him.”
And
said, If
Esau come to the one company, and
smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.
He thought, “If
Esau comes and attacks one camp, then the other camp can escape.”
And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:
Then Jacob declared, “O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, the LORD who told me, ‘Go back to your country and to your kindred, and I will make you
prosper,’
And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
But You have
said, ‘I will surely make you
prosper, and I will make your offspring like the sand of the sea, too numerous to count.’”
And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and
said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space
betwixt drove and drove.
He entrusted them to his servants in separate herds and told them, “Go on
ahead of me, and keep some distance between the herds.”
And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he
said, I will
appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face;
peradventure he will accept of me.
You are also to say, ‘Look, your servant Jacob is right behind us.’” For he thought, “I will
appease Esau with the gift that is going before me. After that I can face him, and perhaps he will accept me.”
And he
said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he
said, I will not let thee go, except thou
bless me.
Then the man
said, “Let me go, for it is
daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you
bless me.”
And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
“What is your name?” the man asked. “Jacob,” he replied.
And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men, and you have prevailed.”
And Jacob asked him, and
said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he
said, Wherefore is it that thou
dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
And Jacob requested, “Please tell me your name.” But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed Jacob there.
And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and
said, Who are those with thee? And he
said, The children which God hath
graciously given thy servant.
When
Esau looked up and saw the women and children, he asked, “Who are these with you?” Jacob answered, “These are the children God has
graciously given your servant.”
And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.
“What do you mean by sending this whole company to meet me?” asked
Esau. “To find favor in your sight, my lord,” Jacob answered.
And
Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep that thou hast unto
thyself.
“I already have
plenty, my brother,”
Esau replied. “Keep what belongs to you.”
And Jacob
said,
Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou
wast pleased with me.
But Jacob insisted, “No, please! If I have found favor in your sight, then receive this gift from my hand. For indeed, I have seen your face, and it is like seeing the face of God, since you have received me
favorably.
And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee.
Then
Esau said, “Let us be on our way, and I will go
ahead of you.”
And he said unto him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die.
But Jacob replied, “My lord knows that the children are
frail, and I must care for sheep and cattle that are
nursing their young. If they are driven hard for even a day, all the animals will die.
And
Esau said, Let me now leave with thee some of the
folk that are with me. And he
said, What needeth it? let me find grace in the sight of my lord.
“Let me leave some of my people with you,”
Esau said. But Jacob replied, “Why do that? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.”
And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son
Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife.
But Hamor
said to them, “My son
Shechem longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.
And
Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.
Then
Shechem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, “Grant me this favor, and I will give you whatever you ask.
And the sons of Jacob answered
Shechem and Hamor his father
deceitfully, and
said, because he had
defiled Dinah their sister:
And they
said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is
uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us:
“We cannot do such a thing,” they
said. “To give our sister to an
uncircumcised man would be a disgrace to us.
