And he
said, Oh let not the Lord be
angry, and I will speak yet but this once:
Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he
said, I will not destroy it for ten’s sake.
Finally, Abraham
said, “May the Lord not be
angry, but let me speak once more. Suppose ten are found there?” And He answered, “On account of the ten, I will not destroy it.”
And he
said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant’s house, and
tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they
said,
Nay; but we will
abide in the street all night.
and
said, “My lords, please turn aside into the house of your servant; wash your feet and
spend the night. Then you can rise early and go on your way.” “No,” they answered, “we will
spend the night in the square.”
And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
They called out to Lot, saying, “Where are the men who came to you
tonight? Send them out to us so we can have relations with them!”
And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.
“Please, my brothers,” he
pleaded, “don’t do such a wicked thing!
And they
said, Stand back. And they
said again, This one fellow came in to
sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed
sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.
“Get out of the way!” they replied. And they declared, “This one came here as a foreigner, and he is already acting like a judge! Now we will treat you worse than them.” And they pressed in on Lot and moved in to break down the door.
And the men
said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and
whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:
Then the two men
said to Lot, “Do you have
anyone else here—a son-in-law, your sons or daughters, or
anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here,
And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and
said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that
mocked unto his sons in law.
So Lot went out and spoke to the sons-in-law who were
pledged in marriage to his daughters. “Get up,” he
said. “Get out of this place, for the LORD is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was
joking.
And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.
As soon as the men had brought them out, one of them
said, “Run for your lives! Do not look back, and do not stop
anywhere on the plain!
Flee to the mountains, or you will be swept away!”
And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord:
But Lot replied, “No, my lords, please!
And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.
“Very well,” he answered, “I will grant this request as well, and will not
demolish the town you indicate.
And the
firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:
One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man in the land to sleep with us, as is the custom over all the earth.
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that the
firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay
yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
The next day the older daughter
said to the younger, “Look, I
slept with my father last night. Let us get him
drunk with wine again
tonight so you can go in and sleep with him and we can preserve our father’s line.”
But God came to
Abimelech in a dream by night, and
said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man’s wife.
One night, however, God came to
Abimelech in a dream and told him, “You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken, for she is a married woman.”
But
Abimelech had not come near her: and he
said, Lord,
wilt thou
slay also a righteous nation?
Now
Abimelech had not gone near her, so he replied, “Lord, would You destroy a nation even though it is innocent?
Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself
said, He is my brother: in the
integrity of my heart and
innocency of my hands have I done this.
Didn’t Abraham tell me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself
said, ‘He is my brother.’ I have done this in the
integrity of my heart and the
innocence of my hands.”
And God
said unto him in a dream,
Yea, I know that thou
didst this in the
integrity of thy heart; for I also
withheld thee from
sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.
Then God
said to
Abimelech in the dream, “
Yes, I know that you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from
sinning against Me. That is why I did not let you touch her.
Then
Abimelech called Abraham, and
said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I
offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.
Then
Abimelech called Abraham and asked, “What have you done to us? How have I
sinned against you, that you have brought such
tremendous guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should not be done.”
And
Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing?
And Abraham
said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will
slay me for my wife’s sake.
Abraham replied, “I thought to myself, ‘Surely there is no fear of God in this place. They will kill me on account of my wife.’
And it came to pass, when God caused me to
wander from my father’s house, that I
said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt
shew unto me; at every place
whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.
So when God had me journey from my father’s house, I
said to
Sarah, ‘This is how you can show your
loyalty to me: Wherever we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”’”
And
Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee.
And
Abimelech said, “Look, my land is before you. Settle wherever you please.”
And unto
Sarah he
said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved.
And he
said to
Sarah, “See, I am giving your brother a thousand pieces of silver. It is your
vindication before all who are with you; you are completely cleared.”
And the LORD visited
Sarah as he had
said, and the LORD did unto
Sarah as he had spoken.
Now the LORD attended to
Sarah as He had
said, and the LORD did for
Sarah what He had promised.
And
Sarah said, God hath made me to
laugh, so that all that hear will
laugh with me.
And she
said, Who would have
said unto Abraham, that
Sarah should have given children
suck? for I have born him a son in his old age.
She added, “Who would have told Abraham that
Sarah would
nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”
Wherefore she
said unto Abraham, Cast out this
bondwoman and her son: for the son of this
bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.
and she
said to Abraham, “
Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac!”
And God
said unto Abraham, Let it not be
grievous in thy sight because of the
lad, and because of thy
bondwoman; in all that
Sarah hath
said unto thee,
hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.
But God
said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed about the boy and your
maidservant.
Listen to everything that
Sarah tells you, for through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.
And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a
bowshot: for she
said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and
wept.
Then she went off and sat down nearby, about a
bowshot away, for she
said, “I cannot bear to watch the boy die!” And as she sat nearby, she lifted up her voice and
wept.
And God heard the voice of the
lad; and the angel of God called
Hagar out of heaven, and
said unto her, What aileth thee,
Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the
lad where he is.
Then God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to
Hagar from heaven, “What is wrong,
Hagar? Do not be afraid, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he lies.
And it came to pass at that time, that
Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his host spake unto Abraham, saying, God is with thee in all that thou doest:
At that time
Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army
said to Abraham, “God is with you in all that you do.
And Abraham
said, I will
swear.
And Abraham replied, “I
swear it.”
And
Abimelech said, I
wot not who hath done this thing: neither
didst thou tell me, neither yet heard I of it, but to day.
Abimelech replied, “I do not know who has done this. You did not tell me, so I have not heard about it until
today.”
And
Abimelech said unto Abraham, What mean these seven
ewe lambs which thou hast set by themselves?
and
Abimelech asked him, “Why have you set apart these seven
ewe lambs?”
And he
said, For these seven
ewe lambs shalt thou take of my hand, that they may be a witness unto me, that I have
digged this well.
He replied, “You are to accept the seven
ewe lambs from my hand as my witness that I
dug this well.”
And it came to pass after these things, that God did
tempt Abraham, and
said unto him, Abraham: and he
said, Behold, here I am.
Some time later God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he answered.
And he
said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of
Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
“Take your son,” God
said, “your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of
Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.”
And Abraham
said unto his young men,
Abide ye here with the
ass; and I and the
lad will go
yonder and worship, and come again to you,
“Stay here with the
donkey,” Abraham told his servants. “The boy and I will go over there to worship, and then we will return to you.”
And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” “Here I am, my son,” he replied. “The fire and the wood are here,” said Isaac, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
Abraham answered, “God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two walked on together.
And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
Just then the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied.
And he
said, Lay not thine hand upon the
lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not
withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
“Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him,”
said the angel, “for now I know that you fear God, since you have not
withheld your only son from me.”
And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.
And Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. So to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”
And
said, By myself have I
sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not
withheld thy son, thine only son:
saying, “By Myself I have
sworn, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not
withheld your only son,
And Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spake unto the sons of
Heth, saying,
Then Abraham got up from beside his dead wife and
said to the
Hittites,
And he communed with them, saying, If it be your mind that I should
bury my dead out of my sight; hear me, and intreat for me to Ephron the son of
Zohar,
“If you are willing for me to
bury my dead,” he
said to them, “
listen to me, and approach Ephron son of
Zohar on my behalf
And he spake unto Ephron in the
audience of the people of the land, saying, But if thou
wilt give it, I pray thee, hear me: I will give thee money for the field; take it of me, and I will
bury my dead there.
and
said to Ephron in their presence, “If you will please
listen to me, I will pay you the price of the field. Accept it from me, so that I may
bury my dead there.”
And Abraham
said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my
thigh:
So Abraham
instructed the chief servant of his household, who managed all he owned, “Place your hand under my
thigh,
And the servant
said unto him,
Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest?
The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to follow me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the land from which you came?”
And Abraham
said unto him,
Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again.
Abraham replied, “Make sure that you do not take my son back there.
And he
said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and
shew kindness unto my master Abraham.
“O LORD, God of my master Abraham,” he prayed, “please grant me success
today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.
And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher.
So the servant ran to meet her and
said, “Please let me have a little water from your
jar.”
And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink.
“Drink, my lord,” she replied, and she quickly lowered her
jar to her hands and gave him a drink.
And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking.
After she had given him a drink, she said, “I will also draw water for your camels, until they have had enough to drink.”
And
said, Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee: is there room in thy father’s house for us to
lodge in?
“Whose daughter are you?” he asked. “Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to
spend the night?”
And she
said unto him, I am the daughter of
Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto
Nahor.
She replied, “I am the daughter of
Bethuel, the son that Milcah bore to
Nahor.”
She
said moreover unto him, We have both straw and
provender enough, and room to
lodge in.
Then she added, “We have
plenty of straw and feed, as well as a place for you to
spend the night.”
And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master’s brethren.
saying, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not
withheld His kindness and faithfulness from my master. As for me, the LORD has led me on the journey to the house of my master’s relatives.”
And it came to pass, when he saw the
earring and bracelets upon his sister’s hands, and when he heard the words of
Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well.
As soon as he saw the ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s wrists, and heard
Rebekah’s words, “The man
said this to me,” he went and found the man standing by the camels near the spring.
And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; wherefore standest thou without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.
“Come, you who are blessed by the LORD,”
said Laban. “Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.”
And there was set meat before him to eat: but he
said, I will not eat, until I have told mine
errand. And he
said, Speak on.
Then a meal was set before the man, but he
said, “I will not eat until I have told you what I came to say.” So
Laban said, “Please speak.”
And he said, I am Abraham’s servant.
“I am Abraham’s servant,” he replied.
And my master made me
swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the
Canaanites, in whose land I dwell:
My master made me
swear an oath and
said, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the
Canaanites in whose land I dwell,
And I
said unto my master,
Peradventure the woman will not follow me.
Then I asked my master, ‘What if the woman will not come back with me?’
And he
said unto me, The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee, and
prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father’s house:
And he told me, ‘The LORD, before whom I have walked, will send His angel with you and make your journey a success, so that you may take a wife for my son from my kindred and from my father’s house.
And I came this day unto the well, and
said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, if now thou do
prosper my way which I go;
So when I came to the spring
today, I prayed: O LORD, God of my master Abraham, if only You would make my journey a success!
And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold,
Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the well, and drew water: and I
said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee.
And before I had finished praying in my heart, there was
Rebekah coming out with her
jar on her shoulder, and she went down to the spring and drew water. So I
said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’
And she made
haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and
said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: so I
drank, and she made the camels drink also.
She quickly lowered her
jar from her shoulder and
said, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels as well.’ So I
drank, and she also watered the camels.
And I asked her, and
said, Whose daughter art thou? And she
said, The daughter of
Bethuel,
Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the
earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands.
Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She replied, ‘The daughter of
Bethuel son of
Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.’ So I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her wrists.
Then
Laban and
Bethuel answered and
said, The thing proceedeth from the LORD: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good.
Laban and
Bethuel answered, “This is from the LORD; we have no choice in the matter.
And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and
tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he
said, Send me away unto my master.
Then he and the men with him
ate and
drank and spent the night there. When they got up the next morning, he
said, “Send me on my way to my master.”
And her brother and her mother
said, Let the
damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.
But her brother and mother
said, “Let the
girl remain with us ten days or so. After that, she may go.”
And he
said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath
prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master.
But he replied, “Do not delay me, since the LORD has made my journey a success. Send me on my way so that I may go to my master.”
And they
said, We will call the
damsel, and
enquire at her mouth.
So they
said, “We will call the
girl and ask her opinion.”
And they called
Rebekah, and
said unto her,
Wilt thou go with this man? And she
said, I will go.
They called
Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?” “I will go,” she replied.
And they blessed
Rebekah, and
said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which
hate them.
And they blessed
Rebekah and
said to her, “Our sister, may you become the mother of thousands upon thousands. May your offspring possess the gates of their enemies.”
For she had
said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had
said, It is my master: therefore she took a
vail, and covered herself.
and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?” “It is my master,” the servant answered. So she took her
veil and covered herself.
And the children struggled together within her; and she
said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to
enquire of the LORD.
But the children inside her struggled with each other, and she
said, “Why is this happening to me?” So
Rebekah went to inquire of the LORD,
And the LORD
said unto her, Two nations are in thy
womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy
bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.
and He declared to her: “Two nations are in your
womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”
And
Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red
pottage; for I am
faint: therefore was his name called
Edom.
He
said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red
stew, for I am
famished.” (That is why he was also called
Edom.)
And
Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this
birthright do to me?
“Look,”
said Esau, “I am about to die, so what good is a
birthright to me?”
And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:
The LORD appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt. Settle in the land where I tell you.
And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he
said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest,
said he, the men of the place should kill me for
Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.
But when the men of that place asked about his wife, he
said, “She is my sister.” For he was afraid to say, “She is my wife,” since he thought to himself, “The men of this place will kill me on account of
Rebekah, because she is so beautiful.”
And
Abimelech called Isaac, and
said, Behold, of a
surety she is thy wife: and how
saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac
said unto him, Because I
said, Lest I die for her.
Abimelech sent for Isaac and
said, “So she is really your wife! How could you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac replied, “Because I thought I might die on account of her.”
And
Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have
lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought
guiltiness upon us.
“What is this you have done to us?” asked
Abimelech. “One of the people could easily have
slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”
And
Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.
Then
Abimelech said to Isaac, “Depart from us, for you are much too powerful for us.”
And the herdmen of
Gerar did
strive with Isaac’s herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they
strove with him.
But the herdsmen of
Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen and
said, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek, because they
contended with him.
And he removed from thence, and
digged another well; and for that they
strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he
said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.
He moved on from there and
dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. He named it Rehoboth and
said, “At last the LORD has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.”
And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and
said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will
bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake.
and that night the LORD appeared to him and
said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will
bless you and multiply your descendants for the sake of My servant Abraham.”
And Isaac
said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye
hate me, and have sent me away from you?
“Why have you come to me?” Isaac asked them. “You
hated me and sent me away.”
And they
said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we
said, Let there be now an oath
betwixt us, even
betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;
“We can plainly see that the LORD has been with you,” they replied. “We
recommend that there should now be an oath between us and you. Let us make a covenant with you
And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac’s servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had
digged, and
said unto him, We have found water.
On that same day, Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well they had
dug. “We have found water!” they told him.
And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were
dim, so that he could not see, he called
Esau his eldest son, and
said unto him, My son: and he
said unto him, Behold, here am I.
When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see, he called his older son
Esau and
said to him, “My son.” “Here I am,”
Esau replied.
And he said, Behold now, I am old, I know not the day of my death:
“Look,” said Isaac, “I am now old, and I do not know the day of my death.
And
Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto
Esau thy brother, saying,
Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “Behold, I overheard your father saying to your brother
Esau,
And Jacob
said to
Rebekah his mother, Behold,
Esau my brother is a
hairy man, and I am a smooth man:
And his mother
said unto him, Upon me be thy
curse, my son: only obey my voice, and go
fetch me them.
His mother replied, “Your
curse be on me, my son. Just obey my voice and go get them for me.”
And he came unto his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I; who art thou, my son?
So Jacob went to his father and said, “My father.” “Here I am!” he answered. “Which one are you, my son?”
