And when they were by
Jebus, the day was far spent; and the
servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and
lodge in it.
When they were near
Jebus and the day was almost gone, the
servant said to his master, “Please, let us stop at this Jebusite city and
spend the night here.”
And he said unto his
servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to
lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in
Ramah.
He continued, “Come, let us try to reach one of these towns to
spend the night in Gibeah or
Ramah.”
Yet there is both straw and
provender for our
asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy
handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy
servants: there is no want of any thing.
even though there is both straw and feed for our
donkeys, and bread and wine for me and the
maidservant and young man with me. There is nothing that we, your
servants, lack.”
Then said Boaz unto his
servant that was set over the reapers, Whose
damsel is this?
And Boaz asked the
foreman of his harvesters, “Whose young woman is this?”
And the
servant that was set over the reapers answered and said, It is the
Moabitish damsel that came back with
Naomi out of the country of Moab:
Then said Boaz unto
Ruth, Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to
glean in another field, neither go from hence, but
abide here fast by my maidens:
Then Boaz said to
Ruth, “
Listen, my daughter. Do not go and
glean in another field, and do not go away from this place, but stay here close to my
servant girls.
Then she said, Let me find favour in thy sight, my lord; for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine
handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens.
“My lord,” she said, “may I continue to find favor in your eyes, for you have comforted and spoken kindly to your
maidservant, though I am not like one of your
servant girls.”
So she kept fast by the maidens of Boaz to
glean unto the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest; and dwelt with her mother in law.
So
Ruth stayed close to the
servant girls of Boaz to
glean grain until the barley and wheat harvests were finished. And she lived with her mother-in-law.
And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou
wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to night in the threshingfloor.
Now is not Boaz, with whose
servant girls you have been working, a relative of ours? In fact,
tonight he is
winnowing barley on the
threshing floor.
“Who are you?” he asked. “I am your
servant Ruth,” she replied. “Spread the corner of your garment over me, for you are a
kinsman-
redeemer.”
Count not thine
handmaid for a daughter of
Belial: for out of the abundance of my
complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.
Do not take your
servant for a wicked woman; for all this time I have been praying out of the depth of my
anguish and grief.”
And the priest’s custom with the people was, that, when any man offered sacrifice, the priest’s
servant came, while the flesh was in
seething, with a
fleshhook of three teeth in his hand;
or for the custom of the priests with the people. When any man offered a sacrifice, the
servant of the priest would come with a three-
pronged meat
fork while the meat was boiling
Also before they burnt the fat, the priest’s
servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to
roast for the priest; for he will not have
sodden flesh of thee, but raw.
Even before the fat was burned, the
servant of the priest would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to
roast, because he will not accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”
And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him,
Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force.
And if any man said to him, “The fat must be burned first; then you may take whatever you want,” the servant would reply, “No, you must give it to me right now. If you refuse, I will take it by force!”
Therefore
Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy
servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
“Go and lie down,” he said to Samuel, “and if He calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for Your
servant is
listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.
Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your
servant is
listening.”
Be strong, and
quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not
servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you:
quit yourselves like men, and fight.
Take courage and be men, O Philistines! Otherwise, you will serve the Hebrews just as they served you. Now be men and fight!”
And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.
He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his servants.
And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.
He will take a tenth of your grain and
grape harvest and give it to his officials and
servants.
He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.
He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you
yourselves will become his slaves.
And the
asses of
Kish Saul’s father were lost. And
Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the
servants with thee, and arise, go seek the
asses.
And he passed through mount Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalisha, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of Shalim, and there they were not: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not.
So Saul passed through the hill country of Ephraim and then through the land of Shalishah, but did not find the
donkeys. He and the
servant went through the region of Shaalim, but they were not there. Then they went through the land of Benjamin, and still they did not find them.
And when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his
servant that was with him, Come, and let us return; lest my father leave caring for the
asses, and take thought for us.
When they reached the land of Zuph, Saul said to his
servant, “Come, let us go back, or my father will stop
worrying about the
donkeys and start
worrying about us.”
And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither;
peradventure he can
shew us our way that we should go.
“Look,” said the servant, “in this city there is a man of God who is highly respected; everything he says surely comes to pass. Let us go there now. Perhaps he will tell us which way to go.”
Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?
“If we do go,” Saul replied, “what can we give the man? For the bread in our packs is gone, and there is no gift to take to the man of God. What do we have?”
And the
servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a
shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.
The
servant answered him again. “Look,” he said, “I have here in my hand a quarter
shekel of silver. I will give it to the man of God, and he will tell us our way.”
Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where the man of God was.
“Good,” said Saul to his servant. “Come, let us go.” So they set out for the city where the man of God was.
And they went up into the city: and when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place.
So Saul and his servant went up toward the city, and as they were entering it, there was Samuel coming toward them on his way up to the high place.
And Samuel took Saul and his
servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were
bidden, which were about thirty persons.
Then Samuel took Saul and his servant, brought them into the hall, and seated them in the place of honor among those who were invited—about thirty in all.
And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul,
Bid the
servant pass on before us, (and he passed on,) but stand thou still a while, that I may
shew thee the word of God.
As they were going down to the edge of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the
servant to go on
ahead of us, but you stay for a while, and I will
reveal to you the word of God.” So the
servant went on.
And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he
prophesied among them.
When Saul and his
servant arrived at Gibeah, a group of prophets met him. Then the Spirit of God
rushed upon him, and he
prophesied along with them.
And Saul’s uncle said unto him and to his
servant,
Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the
asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel.
Now Saul’s uncle asked him and his
servant, “Where did you go?” “To look for the
donkeys,” Saul replied. “When we saw they were not to be found, we went to Samuel.”
And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the LORD thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.
They
pleaded with Samuel, “Pray to the LORD your God for your
servants so that we will not die! For we have added to all our sins the evil of asking for a king.”
Therefore Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and
Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.
So Saul said to the LORD, the God of Israel, “Why have You not answered Your
servant this day? If the fault is with me or my son
Jonathan,
respond with
Urim; but if the fault is with the men of Israel,
respond with
Thummim.” And
Jonathan and Saul were selected, but the people were cleared of the charge.
And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
Saul’s
servants said to him, “Surely a spirit of distress from God is
tormenting you.
Let our lord now command thy
servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a
cunning player on an
harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
Let our lord command your
servants here to seek out someone who can
skillfully play the
harp. Whenever the spirit of distress from God is upon you, he is to play it, and you will be well.”
And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.
And Saul commanded his servants, “Find me someone who plays well, and bring him to me.”
Then answered one of the
servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of
Jesse the
Bethlehemite, that is
cunning in playing, and a mighty
valiant man, and a man of war, and
prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.
One of the
servants answered, “I have seen a son of
Jesse of
Bethlehem who knows how to play the
harp. He is a mighty man of
valor, a
warrior,
eloquent and handsome, and the LORD is with him.”
And he stood and
cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in
array? am not I a
Philistine, and ye
servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.
And
Goliath stood and
shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why do you come out and
array yourselves for battle? Am I not a
Philistine, and are you not
servants of Saul? Choose one of your men and have him come down against me.
If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.
If he is able to fight me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and labor for us.”
And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy
servant will go and fight with this
Philistine.
And David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail on account of this
Philistine. Your
servant will go and fight him!”
And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
David replied, “Your servant has been tending his father’s sheep, and whenever a lion or a bear came and carried off a lamb from the flock,
Your
servant has killed lions and bears; this
uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, for he has
defied the armies of the living God.”
And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy
servant Jesse the
Bethlehemite.
“Whose son are you, young man?” asked Saul. “I am the son of your
servant Jesse of
Bethlehem,” David replied.
And David went out
whithersoever Saul sent him, and
behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s
servants.
So David marched out and
prospered in everything Saul sent him to do, and Saul set him over the men of war. And this was pleasing in the sight of all the people, and of Saul’s officers as well.
And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king’s son in law.
Then Saul ordered his servants, “Speak to David privately and tell him, ‘Behold, the king is pleased with you, and all his servants love you. Now therefore, become his son-in-law.’”
And Saul’s servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king’s son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?
But when Saul’s
servants relayed these words to David, he replied, “Does it seem
trivial in your sight to be the son-in-law of the king? I am a poor man and lightly esteemed.”
And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spake David.
And the servants told Saul what David had said.
And when his
servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son in law: and the days were not
expired.
When the
servants reported these terms to David, he was pleased to become the king’s son-in-law. Before the
wedding day arrived,
Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David
behaved himself more wisely than all the
servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.
Every time the
Philistine commanders came out for battle, David was more successful than all of Saul’s officers, so that his name was highly esteemed.
And Saul spake to
Jonathan his son, and to all his
servants, that they should kill David.
Then Saul ordered his son
Jonathan and all his
servants to kill David. But
Jonathan delighted greatly in David,
And
Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his
servant, against David; because he hath not
sinned against thee, and because his works have been to thee-ward very good:
Then
Jonathan spoke well of David to his father Saul and said to him, “The king should not sin against his
servant David; he has not
sinned against you. In fact, his actions have been highly
beneficial to you.
If he say thus, It is well; thy
servant shall have peace: but if he be very
wroth, then be sure that evil is determined by him.
If he says, ‘Good,’ then your
servant is safe, but if he is
enraged, you will know he has evil intentions.
Therefore thou shalt deal kindly with thy
servant; for thou hast brought thy
servant into a covenant of the LORD with thee: notwithstanding, if there be in me iniquity,
slay me
thyself; for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father?
Therefore deal faithfully with your
servant, for you have brought me into a covenant with you before the LORD. If there is iniquity in me, then kill me
yourself; why should you bring me to your father?”
And David said unto
Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business
whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed my
servants to such and such a place.
“The king has given me a mission,” David replied. “He told me no one is to know about the mission or charge. And I have directed my young men to meet me at a certain place.
Now a certain man of the
servants of Saul was there that day,
detained before the LORD; and his name was Doeg, an
Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Saul.
Now one of Saul’s
servants was there that day,
detained before the LORD. And his name was Doeg the
Edomite, the chief
shepherd for Saul.
And the servants of Achish said unto him, Is not this David the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?
But the servants of Achish said to him, “Is this not David, the king of the land? Did they not sing about him in their dances, saying: ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands’?”
Then said Achish unto his
servants, Lo, ye see the man is
mad: wherefore then have ye brought him to me?
Then Achish said to his
servants, “Look, you can see that the man is
insane! Why have you brought him to me?
When Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men that were with him, (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in
Ramah, having his
spear in his hand, and all his
servants were standing about him;)
Soon Saul learned that David and his men had been discovered. At that time Saul was in Gibeah, sitting under the
tamarisk tree on the hill at Gibeah, with his
spear in hand and all his
servants standing around him.
Then Saul said unto his
servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of
Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds;
Then Saul said to his
servants, “
Listen, men of Benjamin! Is the son of
Jesse giving all of you fields and vineyards and making you commanders of thousands or hundreds?
That all of you have
conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of
Jesse, and there is none of you that is
sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath
stirred up my
servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
Is that why all of you have
conspired against me? Not one of you told me that my own son had made a covenant with the son of
Jesse. Not one of you has shown
concern for me or revealed to me that my son has
stirred up my own
servant to lie in wait against me, as is the case
today.”
Then answered Doeg the
Edomite, which was set over the
servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of
Jesse coming to
Nob, to
Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.
But Doeg the
Edomite, who had stationed himself with Saul’s
servants, answered: “I saw the son of
Jesse come to
Ahimelech son of Ahitub at
Nob.
Then
Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy
servants as David, which is the king’s son in law, and goeth at thy
bidding, and is honourable in thine house?
Ahimelech answered the king, “Who among all your
servants is as faithful as David, the king’s son-in-law, the captain of your
bodyguard who is honored in your house?
Did I then begin to
enquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king
impute any thing unto his
servant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy
servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.
Was that day the first time I inquired of God for him? Far be it from me! Let not the king
accuse your
servant or any of my father’s household, for your
servant knew nothing of this whole
affair—not in part or in whole.”
And the king said unto the
footmen that stood about him, Turn, and
slay the priests of the LORD; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not
shew it to me. But the
servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the LORD.
Then the king ordered the guards at his side, “Turn and kill the priests of the LORD, because they too sided with David. For they knew he was
fleeing, but they did not tell me.” But the king’s
servants would not lift a hand to strike the priests of the LORD.
Then said David, O LORD God of Israel, thy servant hath certainly heard that Saul seeketh to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake.
And David said, “O LORD, God of Israel, Your servant has heard that Saul intends to come to Keilah and destroy the city on my account.
Will the men of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? will Saul come down, as thy
servant hath heard? O LORD God of Israel, I
beseech thee, tell thy
servant. And the LORD said, He will come down.
Will the citizens of Keilah surrender me into his hand? Will Saul come down, as Your servant has heard? O LORD, God of Israel, please tell Your servant.” “He will,” said the LORD.
So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.
With these words David restrained his men, and he did not let them rise up against Saul. Then Saul left the cave and went on his way.
Ask thy young men, and they will
shew thee. Wherefore let the young men find favour in thine eyes: for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee,
whatsoever cometh to thine hand unto thy
servants, and to thy son David.
Ask your young men, and they will tell you. So let my young men find favor with you, for we have come on the day of a feast. Please give whatever you can afford to your servants and to your son David.’”
And Nabal answered David’s
servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of
Jesse? there be many
servants now a days that break away every man from his master.
But Nabal asked them, “Who is David? Who is this son of
Jesse? Many
servants these days are breaking away from their masters.
And she said unto her servants, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal.
and said to her young men, “Go
ahead of me. I will be right behind you.” But she did not tell her husband Nabal.
And fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be: and let thine
handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine
audience, and hear the words of thine
handmaid.
She fell at his feet and said, “My lord, may the
blame be on me alone, but please let your
servant speak to you; hear the words of your
servant.
Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of
Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thine
handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou
didst send.
My lord should pay no attention to this
scoundrel Nabal, for he lives up to his name: His name means
Fool, and folly accompanies him. I, your
servant, did not see my lord’s young men whom you sent.
And now this blessing which thine
handmaid hath brought unto my lord, let it even be given unto the young men that follow my lord.
Now let this gift your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow you.
I pray thee,
forgive the
trespass of thine
handmaid: for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fighteth the battles of the LORD, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days.
Please
forgive your
servant’s
offense, for the LORD will surely make a lasting dynasty for my lord, because he fights the LORD’s battles. May no evil be found in you as long as you live.
And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the LORD, that hath
pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his
servant from evil: for the LORD hath returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and communed with
Abigail, to take her to him to wife.
On hearing that Nabal was dead, David said, “Blessed be the LORD, who has
upheld my cause against the reproach of Nabal and has restrained His
servant from evil. For the LORD has brought the wickedness of Nabal down upon his own head.” Then David sent word to
Abigail, asking for her in marriage.
And when the
servants of David were come to
Abigail to
Carmel, they spake unto her, saying, David sent us unto thee to take thee to him to wife.
When his
servants came to
Abigail at
Carmel, they said, “David has sent us to take you as his wife.”
And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let thine
handmaid be a
servant to wash the feet of the
servants of my lord.
She arose, then bowed facedown and said, “Here is your
maidservant, ready to serve and to wash the feet of my lord’s
servants.”
And he said, Wherefore
doth my lord thus pursue after his
servant? for what have I done? or what evil is in mine hand?
And he continued, “Why is my lord pursuing his servant? What have I done? What evil is in my hand?
Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his
servant. If the LORD have
stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if they be the children of men,
cursed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day from
abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, Go, serve other gods.
Now please, may my lord the king hear the words of his
servant: If the LORD has
stirred you up against me, then may He accept an offering. But if men have done it, may they be
cursed in the presence of the LORD! For
today they have driven me away from sharing in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’
And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?
Then David said to Achish, “If I have found favor in your eyes, let me be assigned a place in one of the outlying towns, so I can live there. For why should your servant live in the royal city with you?”
And Achish believed David, saying, He hath made his people Israel utterly to
abhor him; therefore he shall be my
servant for ever.
So Achish trusted David, thinking, “Since he has made himself an utter
stench to his people Israel, he will be my
servant forever.”
And David said to Achish, Surely thou shalt know what thy servant can do. And Achish said to David, Therefore will I make thee keeper of mine head for ever.
David replied, “Then you will come to know what your
servant can do.” “Very well,” said Achish. “I will make you my
bodyguard for life.”
Then said Saul unto his
servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and
enquire of her. And his
servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at
Endor.
Then Saul said to his
servants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I can go and
consult her.” “There is a medium at
Endor,” his
servants replied.
Now therefore, I pray thee,
hearken thou also unto the voice of thine
handmaid, and let me set a
morsel of bread before thee; and eat, that thou mayest have strength, when thou goest on thy way.
Now please
listen to your
servant and let me set a
morsel of bread before you so you may eat and have the strength to go on your way.”
But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his
servants, together with the woman, compelled him; and he
hearkened unto their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat upon the bed.
Saul refused, saying, “I will not eat.” But his
servants joined the woman in
urging him, and he
heeded their voice. He got up from the ground and sat on the bed.
And she brought it before Saul, and before his servants; and they did eat. Then they rose up, and went away that night.
She served it to Saul and his
servants, and they
ate. And that night they got up and left.
Then said the princes of the Philistines, What do these Hebrews here? And Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, which hath been with me these days, or these years, and I have found no fault in him since he fell unto me unto this day?
Then the commanders of the Philistines asked, “What about these Hebrews?” Achish replied, “Is this not David, the
servant of King Saul of Israel? He has been with me all these days, even years, and from the day he defected until
today I have found no fault in him.”
And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant so long as I have been with thee unto this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies of my lord the king?
“But what have I done?” David replied. “What have you found against your
servant, from the day I came to you until
today, to keep me from going along to fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”
Wherefore now rise up early in the morning with thy master’s servants that are come with thee: and as soon as ye be up early in the morning, and have light, depart.
Now then, get up early in the morning, along with your master’s servants who came with you, and go as soon as it is light.”
And David said unto him, To whom belongest thou? and whence art thou? And he said, I am a young man of Egypt,
servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days
agone I fell sick.
Then David asked him, “To whom do you belong, and where are you from?” “I am an Egyptian,” he replied, “the slave of an Amalekite. My master abandoned me three days ago when I fell ill.
And
Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the
servants of David, went out, and met together by the
pool of
Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the
pool, and the other on the other side of the
pool.
So
Joab son of Zeruiah, along with the
servants of David, marched out and met them by the
pool of
Gibeon. And the two camps took up positions on opposite sides of the
pool.
Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which
pertained to
Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the
servants of David.
So they got up and were counted off—twelve for Benjamin and
Ish-bosheth son of Saul, and twelve for David.
And there was a very
sore battle that day; and
Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the
servants of David.
The battle that day was intense, and
Abner and the men of Israel were defeated by the
servants of David.
And
Joab returned from following
Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David’s
servants nineteen men and
Asahel.
When
Joab returned from pursuing
Abner, he gathered all the troops. In addition to
Asahel,
nineteen of David’s
servants were missing,

servants of David had

but they had struck down 360 Benjamites who were with
Abner.

Now take action, because the LORD has said to David, ‘Through My servant David I will save My people Israel from the hands of the Philistines and of all their enemies.’”
And, Behold, the
servants of David and
Joab came from pursuing a
troop, and brought in a great
spoil with them: but
Abner was not with David in
Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace.
Just then David’s soldiers and
Joab returned from a
raid, bringing with them a great
plunder. But
Abner was not with David in
Hebron because David had sent him on his way in peace.
And the king said unto his servants, Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel?
Then the king said to his
servants, “Do you not
realize that a great prince has fallen
today in Israel?
