Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
What has been will be again, and what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.
There is no
remembrance of former things; neither
shall there be any
remembrance of things that are to come with those that
shall come after.
There is no
remembrance of those who came before, and those yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow after.
For there is no
remembrance of the wise more than of the
fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come
shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the
fool.
For there is no lasting
remembrance of the wise, just as with the
fool, seeing that both will be forgotten in the days to come.
Alas, the wise man will die just like the
fool!
Yea, I
hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that
shall be after me.
I
hated all for which I had
toiled under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who comes after me.
And who knoweth whether he
shall be a wise man or a
fool? yet
shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.
And who knows whether that man will be wise or
foolish? Yet he will take over all the labor at which I have worked
skillfully under the sun. This too is
futile.
For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in
equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein
shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.
When there is a man who has labored with wisdom, knowledge, and skill, and he must give his portion to a man who has not worked for it, this too is
futile and a great evil.
I know that,
whatsoever God doeth, it
shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.
I know that everything God does endures
forever; nothing can be added to it or taken from it. God does it so that they should fear Him.
I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.
I said in my heart, “God will judge the righteous and the wicked, since there is a time for every activity and every deed.”
Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should
rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion: for who
shall bring him to see what
shall be after him?
I have seen that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot. For who can bring him to see what will come after him?
And if one prevail against him, two
shall withstand him; and a
threefold cord is not quickly broken.
And though one may be overpowered, two can resist. Moreover, a cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that
shall stand up in his
stead.
I saw that all who lived and walked under the sun followed this second one, the youth who succeeded the king.
There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after
shall not
rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
There is no limit to all the people who were before them. Yet the successor will not be celebrated by those who come even later. This too is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.
He who loves money is never satisfied by money, and he who loves wealth is never satisfied by income. This too is
futile.
As he came forth of his mother’s
womb, naked
shall he return to go as he came, and
shall take nothing of his labour, which he may carry away in his hand.
As a man came from his mother’s
womb, so he will depart again, naked as he arrived. He takes nothing for his labor to carry in his hands.
And this also is a
sore evil, that in all points as he came, so
shall he go: and what profit hath he that hath laboured for the wind?
This too is a
grievous evil: Exactly as a man is born, so he will depart. What does he gain as he toils for the wind?
For he shall not much remember the days of his life; because God answereth him in the joy of his heart.
For a man seldom considers the days of his life, because God keeps him occupied with the joy of his heart.
For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.
For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
For who knows what is good for a man during the few days in which he passes through his fleeting life like a shadow? Who can tell a man what will come after him under the sun?
It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this;
yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God
shall come forth of them all.
It is good to
grasp the one and not let the other slip from your hand. For he who fears God will follow both warnings.
And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands:
whoso pleaseth God
shall escape from her; but the
sinner shall be taken by her.
And I find more bitter than death the woman who is a
snare, whose heart is a net, and whose hands are chains. The man who pleases God escapes her, but the
sinner is ensnared.
Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man’s wisdom maketh his face to
shine, and the boldness of his face
shall be changed.
Who is like the wise man? Who knows the interpretation of a matter? A man’s wisdom brightens his face, and the sternness of his face is changed.
Whoso keepeth the commandment
shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man’s heart discerneth both time and judgment.
Whoever keeps his command will come to no
harm, and a wise heart knows the right time and procedure.
For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?
Since no one knows what will happen, who can tell him what is to come?
There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
As no man has power over the wind to contain it, so no one has authority over his day of death. As no one can be discharged in wartime, so wickedness will not release those who practice it.
Though a
sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it
shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him:
Although a
sinner does evil a hundred times and still lives long, yet I also know that it will go well with those who fear God, who are
reverent in His presence.
But it
shall not be well with the wicked, neither
shall he
prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.
Yet because the wicked do not fear God, it will not go well with them, and their days will not
lengthen like a shadow.
Then I
commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be
merry: for that
shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.
So I
commended the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a man under the sun than to eat and drink and be
merry. For this joy will
accompany him in his labor during the days of his life that God gives him under the sun.
Then I
beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he
shall not find it;
yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet
shall he not be able to find it.
I saw every work of God, and that a man is unable to
comprehend the work that is done under the sun.
Despite his efforts to search it out, he cannot find its meaning; even if the wise man claims to know, he is unable to
comprehend.
For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing. They have no further reward, because the memory of them is forgotten.
He that diggeth a pit
shall fall into it; and
whoso breaketh an
hedge, a serpent
shall bite him.
He who digs a pit may fall into it, and he who breaches a wall may be
bitten by a
snake.
The one who
quarries stones may be injured by them, and he who splits logs endangers himself.
A
fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what
shall be; and what
shall be after him, who can tell him?
Yet the
fool multiplies words. No one knows what is coming, and who can tell him what will come after him?
Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and
curse not the rich in thy
bedchamber: for a bird of the air
shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings
shall tell the matter.
Do not
curse the king even in your thoughts, or
curse the rich even in your
bedroom, for a bird of the air may carry your words, and a winged creature may report your speech.
Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.
Cast your bread upon the waters, for after many days you will find it again.
Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.
Divide your portion among seven, or even eight, for you do not know what
disaster may
befall the land.
If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth: and if the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be.
If the clouds are full, they will pour out rain upon the earth; whether a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where it falls, there it will lie.
He that observeth the wind
shall not
sow; and he that regardeth the clouds
shall not
reap.
He who watches the wind will fail to
sow, and he who observes the clouds will fail to
reap.
In the morning
sow thy seed, and in the evening
withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not whether
shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both
shall be alike good.
Sow your seed in the morning, and do not rest your hands in the evening, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or if both will equally
prosper.
But if a man live many years, and
rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they
shall be many. All that cometh is vanity.
So if a man lives many years, let him
rejoice in them all. But let him remember the days of darkness, for they will be many. Everything to come is
futile.
Remember now thy
Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw
nigh, when thou
shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;
Remember your
Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of
adversity come and the years approach of which you will say, “I find no pleasure in them,”
In the day when the keepers of the house
shall tremble, and the strong men
shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be
darkened,
on the day the keepers of the house
tremble and the strong men
stoop, when those
grinding cease because they are few and those watching through windows see
dimly,
And the doors
shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the
grinding is low, and he
shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick
shall be brought low;
when the doors to the street are shut and the sound of the mill fades away, when one rises at the sound of a bird and all the daughters of song grow
faint,
Also when they
shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears
shall be in the way, and the
almond tree
shall flourish, and the
grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire
shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:
when men fear the heights and dangers of the road, when the
almond tree blossoms, the
grasshopper loses its spring, and the caper
berry shrivels— for then man goes to his eternal home and mourners walk the streets.
Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
before the dust returns to the ground from which it came and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
For God will bring every deed into judgment, along with every hidden thing, whether good or evil.
My beloved is to me a
sachet of
myrrh resting between my breasts.
I have put off my coat; how
shall I put it on? I have washed my feet; how
shall I
defile them?
I have taken off my
robe— must I put it back on? I have washed my feet— must I soil them again?
I said, I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of the boughs thereof: now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples;
I said, “I will
climb the palm tree; I will take hold of its fruit.” May your breasts be like clusters of the vine, the
fragrance of your breath like apples,
We have a little sister, and she hath no breasts: what shall we do for our sister in the day when she shall be spoken for?
We have a little sister, and her breasts are not yet grown. What shall we do for our sister on the day she is spoken for?
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they
shall be as white as snow; though they be red like
crimson, they
shall be as wool.
“Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are as red as
crimson, they will become like wool.
If ye be willing and
obedient, ye
shall eat the good of the land:
If you are willing and
obedient, you will eat the best of the land.
But if ye refuse and
rebel, ye
shall be
devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
But if you resist and
rebel, you will be
devoured by the sword.” For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city.
I will restore your judges as at first, and your counselors as at the beginning. After that you will be called the City of Righteousness, the Faithful City.”
Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.
Zion will be redeemed with justice, her
repentant ones with righteousness.
And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners
shall be together, and they that
forsake the LORD
shall be consumed.
But rebels and sinners will together be
shattered, and those who
forsake the LORD will perish.
For they
shall be
ashamed of the oaks which ye have desired, and ye
shall be confounded for the gardens that ye have chosen.
Surely you will be
ashamed of the sacred oaks in which you have delighted; you will be
embarrassed by the gardens that you have chosen.
For ye shall be as an oak whose leaf fadeth, and as a garden that hath no water.
For you will become like an oak whose leaves are
withered, like a garden without water.
And the strong
shall be as
tow, and the maker of it as a
spark, and they
shall both burn together, and none
shall quench them.
The strong man will become
tinder and his work will be a
spark; both will burn together, with no one to
quench the flames.
And it
shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD’S house
shall be established in the top of the mountains, and
shall be
exalted above the hills; and all nations
shall flow unto it.
In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD will be established as the chief of the mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and all nations will stream to it.
And many people
shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of
Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
And many peoples will come and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us His ways so that we may walk in His paths.” For the law will go forth from
Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
And he
shall judge among the nations, and
shall rebuke many people: and they
shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation
shall not lift up sword against nation, neither
shall they learn war any more.
Then He will judge between the nations and
arbitrate for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into
pruning hooks. Nation will no longer take up the sword against nation, nor train anymore for war.
The lofty looks of man
shall be humbled, and the
haughtiness of men
shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone
shall be
exalted in that day.
The proud look of man will be humbled, and the
loftiness of men brought low; the LORD alone will be
exalted in that day.
For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:
For the Day of the LORD of Hosts will come against all the proud and lofty, against all that is
exalted— it will be humbled—
And the
loftiness of man
shall be bowed down, and the
haughtiness of men
shall be made low: and the LORD alone
shall be
exalted in that day.
So the pride of man will be brought low, and the
loftiness of men will be humbled; the LORD alone will be
exalted in that day,
And the idols he
shall utterly
abolish.
and the idols will
vanish completely.
And they
shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to
shake terribly the earth.
Men will
flee to caves in the rocks and holes in the ground, away from the terror of the LORD and from the
splendor of His majesty, when He rises to
shake the earth.
In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats;
In that day men will cast away to the moles and bats their idols of silver and gold— the idols they made to worship.
And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them.
“I will make mere lads their leaders, and children will rule over them.”
And the people
shall be
oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child
shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable.
The people will
oppress one another, man against man,
neighbor against
neighbor; the young will rise up against the old, and the base against the honorable.
When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand:
A man will seize his brother within his father’s house: “You have a
cloak—you be our leader! Take charge of this
heap of
rubble.”
In that day
shall he
swear, saying, I will not be an
healer; for in my house is neither bread nor clothing: make me not a ruler of the people.
On that day he will cry
aloud: “I am not a
healer. I have no food or clothing in my house. Do not make me leader of the people!”
Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.
Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their labor.
Woe unto the wicked! it
shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands
shall be given him.
Woe to the wicked;
disaster is upon them! For they will be repaid with what their hands have done.
And it
shall come to pass, that instead of sweet smell there
shall be
stink; and instead of a
girdle a rent; and instead of well set hair
baldness; and instead of a stomacher a
girding of
sackcloth; and burning instead of beauty.
Instead of
fragrance there will be a
stench; instead of a belt, a rope; instead of styled hair,
baldness; instead of fine clothing,
sackcloth; instead of beauty, shame.
Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.
Your men will fall by the sword, and your warriors in battle.
And the gates of
Zion will
lament and
mourn; destitute, she will sit on the ground.
And in that day seven women
shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own
apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.
In that day seven women will take hold of one man and say, “We will eat our own bread and provide our own clothes. Just let us be called by your name. Take away our disgrace!”
In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.
On that day the Branch of the LORD will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the pride and glory of Israel’s survivors.
And it
shall come to pass, that he that is left in
Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem,
shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem:
Whoever remains in
Zion and
whoever is left in Jerusalem will be called holy— all in Jerusalem who are recorded among the living—
When the Lord
shall have washed away the
filth of the daughters of
Zion, and
shall have
purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.
when the Lord has washed away the
filth of the daughters of
Zion and
cleansed the bloodstains from the heart of Jerusalem by a spirit of judgment and a spirit of fire.
And the LORD will
create upon every dwelling place of mount
Zion, and upon her
assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the
shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory
shall be a defence.
Then the LORD will
create over all of Mount
Zion and over her
assemblies a cloud of smoke by day and a
glowing flame of fire by night. For over all the glory there will be a
canopy,
And there
shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the
daytime from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a
covert from storm and from rain.
a shelter to give shade from the heat by day, and a refuge and hiding place from the storm and the rain.
And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my
vineyard: I will take away the
hedge thereof, and it
shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it
shall be
trodden down:
Now I will tell you what I am about to do to My
vineyard: I will take away its
hedge, and it will be consumed; I will
tear down its wall, and it will be
trampled.
And I will lay it waste: it
shall not be
pruned, nor
digged; but there
shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.
I will make it a wasteland, neither
pruned nor cultivated, and thorns and briers will grow up. I will command the clouds that rain
shall not fall on it.”
In mine ears said the LORD of hosts, Of a truth many houses
shall be
desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant.
I heard the LORD of Hosts declare: “Surely many houses will become
desolate, great mansions left unoccupied.
Yea, ten acres of
vineyard shall yield one bath, and the seed of an homer
shall yield an
ephah.
For ten acres of
vineyard will yield but a bath of wine, and a homer of seed only an
ephah of grain.”
Therefore
hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their
pomp, and he that rejoiceth,
shall descend into it.
Therefore
Sheol enlarges its throat and opens wide its enormous jaws, and down go
Zion’s nobles and masses, her revelers and carousers!
And the mean man shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled:
So mankind will be brought low, and each man humbled; the
arrogant will lower their eyes.
But the LORD of hosts
shall be
exalted in judgment, and God that is holy
shall be
sanctified in righteousness.
But the LORD of Hosts will be
exalted by His justice, and the holy God will show Himself holy in righteousness.
Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat.
Lambs will
graze as in their own pastures, and strangers will feed in the ruins of the wealthy.
Therefore as the fire devoureth the
stubble, and the flame consumeth the
chaff, so their root
shall be as
rottenness, and their
blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and
despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes the straw, and as dry grass shrivels in the flame, so their roots will decay and their blossoms will blow away like dust; for they have rejected the instruction of the LORD of Hosts and
despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
And he will lift up an
ensign to the nations from far, and will hiss unto them from the end of the earth: and, behold, they
shall come with speed swiftly:
He lifts a
banner for the distant nations and whistles for those at the ends of the earth. Behold—how speedily and swiftly they come!
None of them grows
weary or stumbles; no one slumbers or sleeps. No belt is loose and no
sandal strap is broken.
Whose arrows are sharp, and all their bows bent, their horses’
hoofs shall be counted like flint, and their wheels like a
whirlwind:
Their arrows are sharpened, and all their bows are
strung. The
hooves of their horses are like flint; their
chariot wheels are like a
whirlwind.
Their
roaring shall be like a lion, they
shall roar like young lions:
yea, they
shall roar, and lay hold of the prey, and
shall carry it away safe, and none
shall deliver it.
Their
roaring is like that of a lion; they
roar like young lions. They
growl and seize their prey; they carry it away from
deliverance.
And in that day they
shall roar against them like the
roaring of the sea: and if one look unto the land, behold darkness and sorrow, and the light is
darkened in the heavens thereof.
In that day they will
roar over it, like the
roaring of the sea. If one looks over the land, he will see darkness and distress; even the light will be obscured by clouds.
Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying: “Whom shall I send? Who will go for Us?” And I said: “Here am I. Send me!”
But yet in it
shall be a tenth, and it
shall return, and
shall be eaten: as a
teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed
shall be the substance thereof.
And though a tenth remains in the land, it will be burned again. As the
terebinth and oak leave stumps when felled, so the holy seed will be a
stump in the land.”
Thus saith the Lord GOD, It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass.
But this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘It will not arise; it will not happen.
For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; and within
threescore and five years
shall Ephraim be broken, that it be not a people.
For the head of
Aram is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin. Within sixty-five years Ephraim will be
shattered as a people.
