These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this
side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea, between
Paran, and Tophel, and
Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel in the wilderness east of the Jordan—in the Arabah opposite Suph—between
Paran and Tophel,
Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
On this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying,
On the east side of the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses began to explain this law, saying:
Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the
Amorites, and unto all the places
nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the
vale, and in the south, and by the sea
side, to the land of the
Canaanites, and unto
Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates.
Resume your journey and go to the hill country of the
Amorites; go to all the
neighboring peoples in the Arabah, in the hill country, in the foothills, in the Negev, and along the
seacoast to the land of the
Canaanites and to
Lebanon, as far as the great River Euphrates.
And we took at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the
Amorites the land that was on this
side Jordan, from the river of
Arnon unto mount
Hermon;
At that time we took from the two kings of the
Amorites the land across the Jordan, from the
Arnon Valley as far as Mount
Hermon—
For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?
Indeed, ask now from one end of the heavens to the other about the days that long preceded you, from the day that God created man on earth: Has anything as great as this ever happened or been reported?
Then Moses severed three cities on this
side Jordan toward the
sunrising;
Then Moses set aside three cities across the Jordan to the east
On this
side Jordan, in the valley over against Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon king of the
Amorites, who dwelt at
Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel
smote, after they were come forth out of Egypt:
while they were in the valley across the Jordan facing Beth-peor in the land of Sihon king of the
Amorites, who lived in
Heshbon and was defeated by Moses and the Israelites after they had come out of Egypt.
And they possessed his land, and the land of
Og king of
Bashan, two kings of the
Amorites, which were on this
side Jordan toward the
sunrising;
They took possession of the land belonging to Sihon and to
Og king of
Bashan—the two Amorite kings across the Jordan to the east—
And all the plain on this
side Jordan eastward, even unto the sea of the plain, under the springs of
Pisgah.
including all the Arabah on the east
side of the Jordan and as far as the Sea of the Arabah, below the slopes of
Pisgah.
Are they not on the other
side Jordan, by the way where the sun goeth down, in the land of the
Canaanites, which dwell in the
champaign over against
Gilgal, beside the plains of Moreh?
Are not these mountains across the Jordan, west of the road toward the
sunset, in the land of the
Canaanites who live in the Arabah opposite
Gilgal near the Oak of Moreh?
Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.
“Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, so that it may remain there as a witness against you.
Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan; but ye shall pass before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valour, and help them;
Your wives, your young children, and your
livestock may remain in the land that Moses gave you on this
side of the Jordan. But all your mighty men of
valor must be armed for battle to cross over
ahead of your brothers and help them,
Until the LORD have given your brethren rest, as he hath given you, and they also have possessed the land which the LORD your God giveth them: then ye shall return unto the land of your possession, and enjoy it, which Moses the LORD’S servant gave you on this
side Jordan toward the
sunrising.
until the LORD gives them rest as He has done for you, and your brothers also possess the land that the LORD your God is giving them. Then you may return to the land of your inheritance and take possession of that which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the east side of the Jordan.”
For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the
Amorites, that were on the other
side Jordan, Sihon and
Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.
For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and
Og, the two kings of the
Amorites across the Jordan, whom you devoted to destruction.
And it came to pass, when all the kings of the
Amorites, which were on the
side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the
Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.
Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the
Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed over, their hearts melted and their spirits failed for fear of the Israelites.
And Joshua sent men from
Jericho to
Ai, which is beside Beth-
aven, on the east
side of
Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed
Ai.
Meanwhile, Joshua sent men from
Jericho to
Ai, which is near Beth-
aven to the east of
Bethel, and told them, “Go up and
spy out the land.” So the men went up and
spied out
Ai.
And Joshua said,
Alas, O Lord GOD, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the
Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other
side Jordan!
“O, Lord GOD,” Joshua said, “why did You ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hand of the
Amorites to be destroyed? If only we had been content to stay on the other
side of the Jordan!
Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in
ambush, and abode between
Bethel and
Ai, on the west
side of
Ai: but Joshua
lodged that night among the people.
So Joshua sent them out, and they went to the place of
ambush and lay in wait between
Bethel and
Ai, to the west of
Ai. But Joshua spent that night among the people.
And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew
nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north
side of
Ai: now there was a valley between them and
Ai.
Then all the troops who were with him marched up and approached the city. They arrived in front of
Ai and camped to the north of it, with the valley between them and the city.
And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in
ambush between
Bethel and
Ai, on the west
side of the city.
Now Joshua had taken about five thousand men and set up an
ambush between
Bethel and
Ai, to the west of the city.
And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this
side, and some on that
side: and they
smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.
Meanwhile, those in the
ambush came out of the city against them, and the men of
Ai were
trapped between the
Israelite forces on both
sides. So Israel struck them down until no
survivor or
fugitive remained.
And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this
side the ark and on that
side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount
Gerizim, and half of them over against mount
Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should
bless the people of Israel.
All Israel, foreigners and citizens alike, with their elders, officers, and judges, stood on both
sides of the ark of the covenant of the LORD facing the
Levitical priests who carried it. Half of the people stood in front of Mount
Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount
Ebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded earlier, to
bless the people of Israel.
And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this
side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against
Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the
Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;
Now these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel
smote, and possessed their land on the other
side Jordan toward the rising of the sun, from the river
Arnon unto mount
Hermon, and all the plain on the east:
Now these are the kings of the land whom the Israelites struck down and whose lands they took beyond the Jordan to the east, from the
Arnon Valley to Mount
Hermon, including all the Arabah eastward:
And these are the kings of the country which Joshua and the children of Israel
smote on this
side Jordan on the west, from
Baal-
gad in the valley of
Lebanon even unto the mount Halak, that goeth up to
Seir; which Joshua gave unto the tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions;
And these are the kings of the land that Joshua and the Israelites conquered beyond the Jordan to the west, from
Baal-
gad in the Valley of
Lebanon to Mount Halak, which rises toward
Seir (according to the allotments to the tribes of Israel, Joshua gave them as an inheritance
And in the valley, Beth-
aram, and Beth-nimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of
Heshbon, Jordan and his border, even unto the edge of the sea of Chinnereth on the other
side Jordan eastward.
and in the valley, Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, with the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of
Heshbon (the territory on the east
side of the Jordan up to the edge of the Sea of Chinnereth).
These are the countries which Moses did distribute for inheritance in the plains of Moab, on the other
side Jordan, by
Jericho, eastward.
These were the portions Moses had given them on the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan, east of
Jericho.
For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes and an half tribe on the other side Jordan: but unto the Levites he gave none inheritance among them.
For Moses had given the inheritance east of the Jordan to the other two and a half tribes. But he granted no inheritance among them to the Levites.
And it went out to the south
side to Maaleh-acrabbim, and passed along to Zin, and ascended up on the south
side unto Kadesh-barnea, and passed along to Hezron, and went up to
Adar, and
fetched a compass to Karkaa:
proceeded south of the
Ascent of Akrabbim, continued on to Zin, went over to the south of Kadesh-barnea, ran past Hezron up to Addar, and curved toward Karka.
And the border went up toward Debir from the valley of
Achor, and so northward, looking toward
Gilgal, that is before the going up to Adummim, which is on the south
side of the river: and the border passed toward the waters of En-shemesh, and the goings out thereof were at En-rogel:
Then the border went up to Debir from the Valley of
Achor, turning north to
Gilgal, which faces the
Ascent of Adummim south of the
ravine. It continued along the waters of En-shemesh and came out at En-rogel.
And the border went up by the valley of the son of
Hinnom unto the south
side of the Jebusite; the same is Jerusalem: and the border went up to the top of the mountain that lieth before the valley of
Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the valley of the giants northward:
From there the border went up the Valley of
Hinnom along the southern slope of the Jebusites (that is, Jerusalem) and ascended to the top of the hill that faces the Valley of
Hinnom on the west, at the northern end of the Valley of
Rephaim.
And the border compassed from Baalah westward unto mount
Seir, and passed along unto the
side of mount Jearim, which is Chesalon, on the north
side, and went down to Beth-shemesh, and passed on to Timnah:
The border
curled westward from Baalah to Mount
Seir, ran along the northern slope of Mount Jearim (that is, Chesalon), went down to Beth-shemesh, and crossed to Timnah.
And the border went out unto the
side of
Ekron northward: and the border was drawn to Shicron, and passed along to mount Baalah, and went out unto Jabneel; and the goings out of the border were at the sea.
Then it went out to the northern slope of
Ekron, curved toward Shikkeron, proceeded to Mount Baalah, went on to Jabneel, and ended at the Sea.
And the border of the children of Ephraim according to their families was thus: even the border of their inheritance on the east side was Ataroth-addar, unto Beth-horon the upper;
This was the territory of the descendants of Ephraim by their clans: The border of their inheritance went from Ataroth-addar in the east to Upper Beth-horon
And the border went out toward the sea to Michmethah on the north
side; and the border went about eastward unto Taanath-
shiloh, and passed by it on the east to Janohah;
and out toward the Sea. From Michmethath on the north it turned eastward toward Taanath-
shiloh and passed by it to Janoah on the east.
And there fell ten portions to
Manasseh, beside the land of
Gilead and
Bashan, which were on the other
side Jordan;
And the coast descended unto the river Kanah, southward of the river: these cities of Ephraim are among the cities of
Manasseh: the coast of
Manasseh also was on the north
side of the river, and the outgoings of it were at the sea:
From there the border continued southward to the
Brook of Kanah. There were cities belonging to Ephraim among the cities of
Manasseh, but the border of
Manasseh was on the north
side of the
brook and ended at the Sea.
And their border on the north
side was from Jordan; and the border went up to the
side of
Jericho on the north
side, and went up through the mountains westward; and the goings out thereof were at the wilderness of Beth-
aven.
On the north
side their border began at the Jordan, went up past the northern slope of
Jericho, headed west through the hill country, and came out at the wilderness of Beth-
aven.
And the border went over from thence toward
Luz, to the
side of
Luz, which is
Bethel, southward; and the border descended to Ataroth-
adar, near the hill that lieth on the south
side of the
nether Beth-horon.
From there the border crossed over to the southern slope of
Luz (that is,
Bethel) and went down to Ataroth-addar on the hill south of Lower Beth-horon.
And the border was drawn thence, and compassed the corner of the sea southward, from the hill that lieth before Beth-horon southward; and the goings out thereof were at Kirjath-
baal, which is Kirjath-jearim, a city of the children of Judah: this was the west quarter.
On the west
side the border curved southward from the hill facing Beth-horon on the south and came out at Kiriath-
baal (that is, Kiriath-jearim), a city of the sons of Judah. This was the western
side.
And the south quarter was from the end of Kirjath-jearim, and the border went out on the west, and went out to the well of waters of Nephtoah:
On the south side the border began at the outskirts of Kiriath-jearim and extended westward to the spring at the Waters of Nephtoah.
And the border came down to the end of the mountain that lieth before the valley of the son of
Hinnom, and which is in the valley of the giants on the north, and descended to the valley of
Hinnom, to the
side of Jebusi on the south, and descended to En-rogel,
Then it went down to the foot of the hill that faces the Valley of
Hinnom at the northern end of the Valley of
Rephaim and ran down the Valley of
Hinnom toward the southern slope of the Jebusites and
downward to En-rogel.
And passed along toward the side over against Arabah northward, and went down unto Arabah:
Then it went on to the northern slope of Beth-arabah and went down into the valley.
And the border passed along to the side of Beth-hoglah northward: and the outgoings of the border were at the north bay of the salt sea at the south end of Jordan: this was the south coast.
The border continued to the northern slope of Beth-hoglah and came out at the northern bay of the Salt Sea, at the mouth of the Jordan. This was the southern border.
And Jordan was the border of it on the east side. This was the inheritance of the children of Benjamin, by the coasts thereof round about, according to their families.
On the east side the border was the Jordan. These were the borders around the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Benjamin.
And the border compasseth it on the north side to Hannathon: and the outgoings thereof are in the valley of Jiphthah-el:
Then the border circled around the north side of Neah to Hannathon and ended at the Valley of Iphtah-el.
And turneth toward the
sunrising to Beth-
dagon, and reacheth to
Zebulun, and to the valley of Jiphthah-el toward the north
side of Beth-emek, and Neiel, and goeth out to
Cabul on the left hand,
then turned eastward toward Beth-
dagon, touched
Zebulun and the Valley of Iphtah-el, and went north to Beth-emek and Neiel, passing
Cabul on the left.
And then the coast turneth westward to Aznoth-
tabor, and goeth out from thence to Hukkok, and reacheth to
Zebulun on the south
side, and reacheth to Asher on the west
side, and to Judah upon Jordan toward the
sunrising.
Then the border turned westward to Aznoth-
tabor and ran from there to Hukkok, touching
Zebulun on the south
side, Asher on the west, and Judah at the Jordan on the east.
And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he
sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.
And the LORD gave them rest on every
side, just as He had
sworn to their fathers. None of their enemies could stand against them, for the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.
And now the LORD your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side Jordan.
And now that the LORD your God has given your brothers rest as He promised them, you may return to your homes in the land that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you across the Jordan.
Now to the one half of the tribe of
Manasseh Moses had given possession in
Bashan: but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this
side Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away also unto their tents, then he blessed them,
(To the half-tribe of
Manasseh Moses had given land in
Bashan, and to the other half Joshua gave land on the west
side of the Jordan among their brothers.) When Joshua sent them to their homes he blessed them,
And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of
Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of the children of Israel.
Then the Israelites received the report: “Behold, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh have built an altar on the border of the land of
Canaan, at Geliloth near the Jordan on the
Israelite side.”
Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and
traps unto you, and scourges in your
sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
know for sure that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become for you a
snare and a
trap, a
scourge in your
sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that the LORD your God has given you.
And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods.
And Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your fathers, including Terah the father of Abraham and
Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates and worshiped other gods.
And I took your father Abraham from the other
side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of
Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.
But I took your father Abraham from beyond the Euphrates and led him through all the land of
Canaan, and I multiplied his descendants. I gave him Isaac,
And I brought you into the land of the
Amorites, which dwelt on the other
side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you.
Later, I brought you to the land of the
Amorites who lived beyond the Jordan. They fought against you, but I delivered them into your hand, that you should possess their land when I destroyed them before you.
Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in
sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other
side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.
Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve Him in
sincerity and truth; cast aside the gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.
And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other
side of the flood, or the gods of the
Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
But if it is unpleasing in your sight to serve the LORD, then choose for
yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the
Amorites in whose land you are living. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!”
And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-serah, which is in mount Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of Gaash.
And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.
Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your
sides, and their gods shall be a
snare unto you.
So now I tell you that I will not drive out these people before you; they will be thorns in your
sides, and their gods will be a
snare to you.”
And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.
They buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath-heres in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.
Then Jerubbaal, who is
Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and pitched beside the well of Harod: so that the host of the Midianites were on the north
side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.
Early in the morning Jerubbaal (that is,
Gideon) and all the men with him camped beside the spring of Harod. And the camp of
Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh.
And the Midianites and the
Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea
side for multitude.
Now the Midianites,
Amalekites, and all the other people of the east had settled in the valley like a
swarm of locusts, and their camels were as countless as the sand on the
seashore.
When I blow with a
trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the
trumpets also on every
side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of
Gideon.
When I and all who are with me blow our horns, then you are also to blow your horns from all around the camp and
shout, ‘For the LORD and for
Gideon!’”
And they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they
slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they
slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued
Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to
Gideon on the other
side Jordan.
They also captured Oreb and Zeeb, the two princes of
Midian; and they killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. So they pursued the Midianites and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to
Gideon on the other
side of the Jordan.
And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:
The Israelites failed to remember the LORD their God who had delivered them from the hands of all their enemies on every side.
And that year they
vexed and
oppressed the children of Israel: eighteen years, all the children of Israel that were on the other
side Jordan in the land of the
Amorites, which is in
Gilead.
who that very year
harassed and
oppressed the Israelites, and did so for eighteen years to all the Israelites on the other
side of the Jordan in
Gilead, the land of the
Amorites.
Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of
Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east
side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other
side of
Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for
Arnon was the border of Moab.
Then Israel traveled through the wilderness and bypassed the lands of
Edom and Moab. They came to the east
side of the land of Moab and camped on the other
side of the
Arnon. But they did not enter the territory of Moab, since the
Arnon was its border.
And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain
Levite sojourning on the
side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a
concubine out of Bethlehemjudah.
Now in those days, when there was no king in Israel, a
Levite who lived in the remote hill country of Ephraim took for himself a
concubine from
Bethlehem in Judah.
And he said unto him, We are passing from Bethlehemjudah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Bethlehemjudah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.
The
Levite replied, “We are traveling from
Bethlehem in Judah to the remote hill country of Ephraim, where I am from. I went to
Bethlehem in Judah, and now I am going to the house of the LORD; but no one has taken me into his home,
Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in
Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north
side of
Bethel, on the east
side of the
highway that goeth up from
Bethel to
Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.
“But look,” they said, “there is a yearly feast to the LORD in
Shiloh, which is north of
Bethel east of the road that goes up from
Bethel to
Shechem, and south of Lebonah.”
And
Naomi had a
kinsman of her husband’s, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz.
Now
Naomi had a relative on her husband’s
side, a prominent man of noble character from the clan of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz.
And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the
side of the gate, and his neck
brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
As soon as the ark of God was mentioned,
Eli fell backward from his chair by the city gate, and being old and heavy, he broke his neck and died. And
Eli had judged Israel forty years.
And take the ark of the LORD, and lay it upon the
cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a
trespass offering, in a
coffer by the
side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.
Take the ark of the LORD, set it on the
cart, and in a chest beside it put the gold objects you are sending Him as a guilt offering. Then send the ark on its way,
And the LORD sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and
Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every
side, and ye dwelled safe.
So the LORD sent Jerubbaal,
Barak,
Jephthah, and Samuel, and He delivered you from the hands of your enemies on every
side, and you dwelt securely.
Now it came to pass upon a day, that
Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison, that is on the other
side. But he told not his father.
One day
Jonathan son of Saul said to the young man bearing his
armor, “Come, let us cross over to the
Philistine outpost on the other
side.” But
Jonathan did not tell his father.
And between the passages, by which
Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one
side and a sharp rock on the other
side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.
Now there were cliffs on both
sides of the pass that
Jonathan intended to cross to reach the
Philistine outpost. One was named Bozez and the other Seneh.
Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one
side, and I and
Jonathan my son will be on the other
side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.
Then Saul said to all Israel, “You stand on one
side, and I and my son
Jonathan will stand on the other
side.” “Do what seems good to you,” the troops replied.
So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every
side, against Moab, and against the children of
Ammon, and against
Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and
whithersoever he turned himself, he
vexed them.
After Saul had assumed the
kingship over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every
side—the Moabites, the
Ammonites, the Edomites, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he routed them.
And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.
The Philistines stood on one hill and the Israelites stood on another, with the valley between them.
And I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof, as though I shot at a mark.
I will shoot three arrows to the
side of it, as if I were aiming at a
target.
And, behold, I will send a
lad, saying, Go, find out the arrows. If I expressly say unto the
lad, Behold, the arrows are on this
side of thee, take them; then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no
hurt; as the LORD liveth.
Then I will send a boy and say, ‘Go, find the arrows!’ Now, if I expressly say to him, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you; bring them,’ then come, because as surely as the LORD lives, it is safe for you and there is no danger.
And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall: and
Jonathan arose, and
Abner sat by Saul’s
side, and David’s place was empty.
He sat in his usual place by the wall, opposite
Jonathan and beside
Abner, but David’s place was empty.
And as soon as the
lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they
kissed one another, and
wept one with another, until David exceeded.
When the young man had gone, David got up from the south
side of the stone, fell facedown, and bowed three times. Then he and
Jonathan kissed each other and
wept together—though David
wept more.
And the king said unto the
footmen that stood about him, Turn, and
slay the priests of the LORD; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not
shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the LORD.
Then the king ordered the guards at his
side, “Turn and kill the priests of the LORD, because they too
sided with David. For they knew he was
fleeing, but they did not tell me.” But the king’s servants would not lift a hand to strike the priests of the LORD.
And Saul went on this
side of the mountain, and David and his men on that
side of the mountain: and David made
haste to get away for fear of Saul; for Saul and his men compassed David and his men round about to take them.
Saul was proceeding along one
side of the mountain, and David and his men along the other
side. Even though David was
hurrying to get away, Saul and his men were closing in on David and his men to capture them.
And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.
Soon Saul came to the sheepfolds along the road, where there was a cave, and he went in to
relieve himself. And David and his men were hiding in the recesses of the cave.
Then David went over to the other
side, and stood on the top of an hill
afar off; a great space being between them:
Then David crossed to the other
side and stood
atop the mountain at a distance; there was a wide gulf between them.
And when the men of Israel that were on the other
side of the valley, and they that were on the other
side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they
forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
When the Israelites along the valley and those on the other side of the Jordan saw that the army of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their cities and ran away. So the Philistines came and occupied their cities.
And
Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the
pool of
Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one
side of the
pool, and the other on the other
side of the
pool.
So
Joab son of Zeruiah, along with the servants of David, marched out and met them by the
pool of
Gibeon. And the two camps took up positions on opposite
sides of the
pool.
And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s
side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in
Gibeon.
Then each man
grabbed his
opponent by the head and thrust his sword into his
opponent’s
side, and they all fell together. So this place, which is in
Gibeon, is called Helkath-hazzurim.
But
Absalom fled. And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came much people by the way of the hill
side behind him.
Meanwhile,
Absalom had fled. When the young man standing watch looked up, he saw many people coming down the road west of him, along the
side of the hill. And the
watchman went and reported to the king, “I see men coming from the direction of Horonaim, along the
side of the hill.”
And as David and his men went by the way, Shimei went along on the hill’s
side over against him, and
cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast dust.
So David and his men proceeded along the road as Shimei went along the ridge of the hill opposite him. As Shimei went, he
yelled curses, threw stones, and
flung dust at David.
And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate side, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands.
“I will do whatever seems best to you,” the king replied. So he stood beside the gate, while all the troops marched out by hundreds and by thousands.
And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem.
The king said to Barzillai, “Cross over with me, and I will provide for you at my side in Jerusalem.”
And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right
side of the city that lieth in the midst of the river of
Gad, and toward Jazer:
They crossed the Jordan and camped near Aroer, south of the town in the middle of the valley, and proceeded toward
Gad and Jazer.
Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her
cherish him, and let her lie in thy
bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.
So his servants said to him, “Let us search for a young virgin for our lord the king, to attend to him and care for him and lie by his side to keep him warm.”
So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my
side while I was
asleep. She laid him in her
bosom and put her dead son at my
bosom.
