And the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the
south of
Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.
Now the descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up with the men of Judah from the City of Palms to the Wilderness of Judah in the Negev near
Arad. They went to live among the people.
The river of
Kishon swept them away, that ancient river, the river
Kishon. O my
soul, thou hast
trodden down strength.
The River
Kishon swept them away, the ancient river, the River
Kishon. March on, O my
soul, in strength!
And the three hundred
blew the
trumpets, and the LORD set every man’s sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Beth-
shittah in Zererath, and to the border of
Abel-meholah, unto Tabbath.
And when the three hundred rams’ horns
sounded, the LORD set all the men in the camp against one another with their swords. The army fled to Beth-
shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of
Abel-meholah near Tabbath.
And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD: and his
soul was
grieved for the misery of Israel.
So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the LORD, and He could no longer bear the misery of Israel.
But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the LORD, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.
(Now his father and mother did not know this was from the LORD, who was seeking an occasion to move against the Philistines; for at that time the Philistines were ruling over Israel.)
And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her,
Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to
afflict him: and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.
The lords of the Philistines went to her and said, “
Entice him and find out the
source of his great strength and how we can overpower him to
tie him up and
subdue him. Then each one of us will give you eleven hundred shekels of silver.”
So
Delilah said to
Samson, “Please tell me the
source of your great strength and how you can be
tied up and subdued.”
Now there were men lying in wait,
abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
brake the withs, as a thread of
tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.
While the men were hidden in her room, she called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But he
snapped the bowstrings like a
strand of yarn
seared by a flame. So the
source of his strength remained unknown.
And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? thou hast
mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.
“How can you say, ‘I love you,’” she asked, “when your heart is not with me? This is the third time you have
mocked me and failed to
reveal to me the
source of your great strength!”
And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his
soul was
vexed unto death;
Finally, after she had pressed him daily with her words and
pleaded until he was sick to death,
In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.
In those days there was no king in Israel, and the tribe of the Danites was looking for territory to occupy. For up to that time they had not come into an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.
Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in
Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of
Bethel, on the east side of the
highway that goeth up from
Bethel to
Shechem, and on the
south of Lebonah.
“But look,” they said, “there is a yearly feast to the LORD in
Shiloh, which is north of
Bethel east of the road that goes up from
Bethel to
Shechem, and
south of Lebonah.”
And she was in bitterness of
soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and
wept sore.
In her bitter distress,
Hannah prayed to the LORD and
wept with many tears.
And
Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have
drunken neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my
soul before the LORD.
“No, my lord,”
Hannah replied. “I am a woman
oppressed in spirit. I have not had any wine or strong drink, but I have poured out my
soul before the LORD.
And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD.
“Please, my lord,” said
Hannah, “as surely as you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD.
And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy
soul desireth; then he would answer him,
Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force.
And if any man said to him, “The fat must be burned first; then you may take whatever you want,” the servant would reply, “No, you must give it to me right now. If you refuse, I will take it by force!”
And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjath-jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel
lamented after the LORD.
And from that day a long time passed, twenty years in all, as the ark remained at Kiriath-jearim. And all the house of Israel
mourned and
sought after the LORD.
When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of
Kish was taken: and when they
sought him, he could not be found.
Then he had the tribe of Benjamin come forward by its clans, and the clan of Matri was selected. Finally, Saul son of
Kish was selected. But when they looked for him, they could not find him.
Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to
Gilgal, and I have not made
supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.
I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will descend upon me at
Gilgal, and I have not
sought the favor of the LORD.’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.”
But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.
But now your kingdom will not
endure; the LORD has
sought a man after His own heart and appointed him ruler over His people, because you have not kept the command of the LORD.”
And between the passages, by which
Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side and a sharp rock on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.
Now there were cliffs on both sides of the pass that
Jonathan intended to cross to reach the
Philistine outpost. One was named Bozez and the other Seneh.
One
cliff stood to the north toward
Michmash, and the other to the
south toward Geba.
And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.
His
armor-bearer replied, “Do all that is in your heart. Go
ahead; I am with you heart and
soul.”
And when Saul saw David go forth against the
Philistine, he said unto
Abner, the captain of the host,
Abner, whose son is this youth? And
Abner said, As thy
soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.
As Saul had watched David going out to
confront the
Philistine, he said to
Abner the commander of the army, “
Abner, whose son is this young man?” “As surely as you live, O king,”
Abner replied, “I do not know.”
And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the
soul of
Jonathan was
knit with the
soul of David, and
Jonathan loved him as his own
soul.
After David had finished speaking with Saul, the
souls of
Jonathan and David were
knit together, and
Jonathan loved him as himself.
Then
Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own
soul.
Then
Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.
And Saul
sought to
smite David even to the wall with the
javelin; but he
slipped away out of Saul’s presence, and he
smote the
javelin into the wall: and David fled, and escaped that night.
Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his
spear. But the
spear struck the wall and David
eluded him, ran away, and escaped that night.
And David
sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not
Jonathan know this, lest he be
grieved: but truly as the LORD liveth, and as thy
soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.
But David again
vowed, “Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, ‘
Jonathan must not know of this, or he will be
grieved.’ As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, there is but a step between me and death.”
Then
Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you desire, I will do for you.”
And
Jonathan said unto David, O LORD God of Israel, when I have
sounded my father about to
morrow any time, or the third day, and, behold, if there be good toward David, and I then send not unto thee, and
shew it thee;
and
Jonathan said, “By the LORD, the God of Israel, I will
sound out my father by this time
tomorrow or the next day. If he is favorable toward you, will I not send for you and tell you?
And
Jonathan caused David to
swear again, because he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own
soul.
And as soon as the
lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the
south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they
kissed one another, and
wept one with another, until David exceeded.
When the young man had gone, David got up from the
south side of the stone, fell facedown, and bowed three times. Then he and
Jonathan kissed each other and
wept together—though David
wept more.
And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand.
And David stayed in the wilderness strongholds and in the hill country of the Wilderness of Ziph. Day after day Saul searched for him, but God would not deliver David into his hand.
Then came up the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah, saying,
Doth not David hide himself with us in strong holds in the wood, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the
south of Jeshimon?
Then the Ziphites came up to Saul at Gibeah and said, “Is not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hachilah south of Jeshimon?
Now therefore, O king, come down according to all the desire of thy soul to come down; and our part shall be to deliver him into the king’s hand.
Now, O king, come down whenever your soul desires, and we will be responsible for delivering him into your hand.”
And they arose, and went to Ziph before Saul: but David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the plain on the south of Jeshimon.
So they set out and went to Ziph
ahead of Saul. Now David and his men were in the Wilderness of Maon in the Arabah
south of Jeshimon,
Moreover, my father, see,
yea, see the
skirt of thy
robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the
skirt of thy
robe and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor
transgression in mine hand, and I have not
sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my
soul to take it.
See, my father, look at the corner of your
robe in my hand. For I cut it off, but I did not kill you. See and know that there is no evil or rebellion in my hands. I have not
sinned against you, even though you are hunting me down to take my life.
Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD liveth, and as thy
soul liveth, seeing the LORD hath
withholden thee from coming to shed blood, and from
avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.
Now, my lord, as surely as the LORD lives and you
yourself live, the LORD has held you back from coming to
bloodshed and
avenging yourself with your own hand. May your enemies and those who seek
harm for my lord be like Nabal.
Yet a man is risen to pursue thee, and to seek thy
soul: but the
soul of my lord shall be bound in the
bundle of life with the LORD thy God; and the
souls of thine enemies, them shall he
sling out, as out of the middle of a
sling.
And should someone pursue you and seek your life, then the life of my lord will be bound securely by the LORD your God in the
bundle of the living. But He shall
fling away the lives of your enemies like stones from a
sling.
Then said Saul, I have
sinned: return, my son David: for I will no more do thee
harm, because my
soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the
fool, and have
erred exceedingly.
Then Saul replied, “I have
sinned. Come back, David my son. I will never
harm you again, because
today you considered my life precious. I have played the
fool and have committed a grave error!”
And it was told Saul that David was fled to
Gath: and he
sought no more again for him.
And when Saul learned that David had fled to
Gath, he no longer searched for him.
And Achish said,
Whither have ye made a road to day? And David said, Against the
south of Judah, and against the
south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the
south of the
Kenites.
who would ask him, “What have you
raided today?” And David would reply, “The Negev of Judah,” or “The Negev of Jerahmeel,” or “The Negev of the
Kenites.”
And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to
Ziklag on the third day, that the
Amalekites had invaded the
south, and
Ziklag, and
smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire;
And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the
soul of all the people was
grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.
And David was greatly distressed because the people spoke of stoning him, because the
soul of every man
grieved for his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the LORD his God.
We made an invasion upon the
south of the Cherethites, and upon the coast which belongeth to Judah, and upon the
south of
Caleb; and we burned
Ziklag with fire.
We
raided the Negev of the Cherethites, the territory of Judah, and the Negev of
Caleb, and we burned down
Ziklag.”
To them which were in
Bethel, and to them which were in
south Ramoth, and to them which were in Jattir,
And
Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, Ye
sought for David in times past to be king over you:
Now
Abner conferred with the elders of Israel and said, “In the past you
sought David as your king.
And they brought the head of
Ish-bosheth unto David to
Hebron, and said to the king, Behold the head of
Ish-bosheth the son of Saul thine enemy, which
sought thy life; and the LORD hath
avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his seed.
They brought the head of
Ish-bosheth to David at
Hebron and said to the king, “Here is the head of
Ish-bosheth son of Saul, your enemy who
sought your life.
Today the LORD has granted
vengeance to my lord the king against Saul and his offspring.”
And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As the LORD liveth, who hath redeemed my
soul out of all
adversity,
But David answered Rechab and his brother Baanah, the sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite, “As surely as the LORD lives, who has redeemed my life from all distress,
And David said on that day,
Whosoever getteth up to the
gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the
lame and the blind, that are
hated of David’s
soul, he shall be chief and captain. Wherefore they said, The blind and the
lame shall not come into the house.
On that day he said, “
Whoever attacks the Jebusites must use the water shaft to reach the
lame and blind who are
despised by David.” That is why it is said, “The blind and the
lame will never enter the palace.”
And let it be, when thou hearest the
sound of a going in the tops of the
mulberry trees, that then thou shalt
bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to
smite the host of the Philistines.
As soon as you hear the
sound of marching in the tops of the
balsam trees, move quickly, because this will mean that the LORD has marched out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.”
So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with
shouting, and with the
sound of the
trumpet.
while he and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with
shouting and the
sounding of the ram’s horn.
And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah,
abide in tents; and my lord
Joab, and the servants of my lord, are
encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy
soul liveth, I will not do this thing.
Uriah answered, “The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my master
Joab and his soldiers are camped in the open field. How can I go to my house to eat and drink and sleep with my wife? As surely as you live, and as your
soul lives, I will not do such a thing!”
And the
soul of king David longed to go forth unto
Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was dead.
And King David longed to go to
Absalom, for he had been
consoled over Amnon’s death.
And the king said, Is not the hand of
Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, As thy
soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant
Joab, he
bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thine
handmaid:
So the king asked, “Is the hand of
Joab behind all this?” The woman answered, “As surely as you live, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right or to the left from anything that my lord the king says.
Yes, your servant
Joab is the one who gave me orders; he told your
maidservant exactly what to say.
Then
Absalom sent
spies throughout the tribes of Israel with this message: “When you hear the
sound of the horn, you are to say, ‘
Absalom reigns in
Hebron!’”
And Hushai said unto
Absalom, The counsel that
Ahithophel hath given is not good at this time.
Hushai replied, “This time the advice of
Ahithophel is not
sound.”
And when
Absalom’s servants came to the woman to the house, they said, Where is
Ahimaaz and
Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They be gone over the
brook of water. And when they had
sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.
When
Absalom’s servants came to the woman at the house, they asked, “Where are
Ahimaaz and
Jonathan?” “They have crossed over the
brook,” she replied. The men searched but did not find them, so they returned to Jerusalem.
Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his
bloody house, because he
slew the Gibeonites.
During the reign of David there was a famine for three successive years, and David sought the face of the LORD. And the LORD said, “It is because of the blood shed by Saul and his family, because he killed the Gibeonites.”
And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them; (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the
remnant of the
Amorites; and the children of Israel had
sworn unto them: and Saul
sought to
slay them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah.)
At this, David summoned the Gibeonites and spoke to them. (Now the Gibeonites were not Israelites, but a
remnant of the
Amorites. The Israelites had taken an oath concerning them, but in his zeal for Israel and Judah, Saul had
sought to kill them.)
And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the river of
Gad, and toward Jazer:
They crossed the Jordan and camped near Aroer,
south of the town in the middle of the valley, and proceeded toward
Gad and Jazer.
And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the
Hivites, and of the
Canaanites: and they went out to the
south of Judah, even to Beer-
sheba.
They went toward the fortress of Tyre and all the cities of the
Hivites and
Canaanites. Finally, they went on to the Negev of Judah, to
Beersheba.
Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be
sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her
cherish him, and let her lie in thy
bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.
So his servants said to him, “Let us search for a young virgin for our lord the king, to attend to him and care for him and lie by his side to keep him warm.”
So they
sought for a fair
damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found
Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
Then they searched throughout Israel for a beautiful
girl, and they found
Abishag the Shunammite and brought her to the king.
And the king
sware, and said, As the LORD liveth, that hath redeemed my
soul out of all distress,
And the king
swore an oath, saying, “As surely as the LORD lives, who has redeemed my life from all distress,
And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and
rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the
sound of them.
All the people followed him, playing flutes and
rejoicing with such a great joy that the earth was split by the
sound.
And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when
Joab heard the
sound of the
trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an
uproar?
Now Adonijah and all his guests were finishing their feast when they heard the
sound of the ram’s horn. “Why is the city in such a loud
uproar?” asked
Joab.
That the LORD may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take
heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their
soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.
and so that the LORD may
fulfill His promise to me: ‘If your descendants take
heed to walk faithfully before Me with all their heart and
soul, you will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.’
The door for the middle chamber was in the right side of the house: and they went up with winding stairs into the middle chamber, and out of the middle into the third.
The entrance to the bottom floor was on the
south side of the temple. A
stairway led up to the middle level, and from there to the third floor.
And he set up the pillars in the
porch of the temple: and he set up the right
pillar, and called the name thereof
Jachin: and he set up the left
pillar, and he called the name thereof Boaz.
Thus he set up the pillars at the
portico of the temple. The
pillar to the
south he named
Jachin, and the
pillar to the north he named Boaz.
It stood upon twelve oxen, three looking toward the north, and three looking toward the west, and three looking toward the south, and three looking toward the east: and the sea was set above upon them, and all their hinder parts were inward.
The Sea stood on twelve oxen, three facing north, three facing west, three facing south, and three facing east. The Sea rested on them, with all their hindquarters toward the center.
And he put five bases on the right side of the house, and five on the left side of the house: and he set the sea on the right side of the house eastward over against the south.
He set five stands on the
south side of the temple and five on the north, and he put the Sea on the
south side, at the
southeast corner of the temple.
And so return unto thee with all their heart, and with all their
soul, in the land of their enemies, which led them away
captive, and pray unto thee toward their land, which thou gavest unto their fathers, the city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built for thy name:
and when they return to You with all their heart and
soul in the land of the enemies who took them
captive, and when they pray to You in the direction of the land that You gave to their fathers, the city You have chosen, and the house I have built for Your Name,
And all the earth sought to Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.
The whole world
sought an
audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom that God had put in his heart.
And I will take thee, and thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul desireth, and shalt be king over Israel.
But as for you, I will take you, and you shall reign over all that your heart desires, and you will be king over Israel.
Solomon
sought therefore to kill
Jeroboam. And
Jeroboam arose, and fled into Egypt, unto
Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.
Solomon therefore
sought to kill
Jeroboam. But
Jeroboam arose and fled to Egypt, to
Shishak king of Egypt, where he remained until the death of Solomon.
And it was so, when
Ahijah heard the
sound of her feet as she came in at the door, that he said, Come in, thou wife of
Jeroboam; why feignest thou
thyself to be another? for I am sent to thee with heavy
tidings.
So when
Ahijah heard the
sound of her feet entering the door, he said, “Come in, wife of
Jeroboam! Why are you
disguised? For I have been sent to you with bad news.
And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and
cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child’s
soul come into him again.
Then he stretched himself out over the child three times and
cried out to the LORD, “O LORD my God, please let this boy’s life return to him!”
And the LORD heard the voice of
Elijah; and the
soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.
And the LORD
listened to the voice of
Elijah, and the child’s life returned to him, and he lived.
And they took the
bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of
Baal from morning even until
noon, saying, O
Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they
leaped upon the altar which was made.
And they took the bull that was given them, prepared it, and called on the name of
Baal from morning until
noon,
shouting, “O
Baal, answer us!” But there was no
sound, and no one answered as they
leaped around the altar they had made.
And
Elijah said unto
Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a
sound of abundance of rain.
And
Elijah said to
Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is the
sound of a heavy rain.”
And
Elijah said unto
Elisha,
Tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to
Bethel. And
Elisha said unto him, As the LORD liveth, and as thy
soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to
Bethel.
and
Elijah said to
Elisha, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to
Bethel.” But
Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to
Bethel.
And
Elijah said unto him,
Elisha,
tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to
Jericho. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy
soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to
Jericho.
And
Elijah said to
Elisha, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to
Jericho.” But
Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went to
Jericho.
And
Elijah said unto him,
Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the LORD hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy
soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on.
And
Elijah said to
Elisha, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to the Jordan.” But
Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on.
And when they urged him till he was
ashamed, he said, Send. They sent therefore fifty men; and they
sought three days, but found him not.
But when they pressed him to the point of
embarrassment, he said, “Send them.” And they sent fifty men, who searched for three days but did not find
Elijah.
And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God said, Let her alone; for her
soul is
vexed within her: and the LORD hath
hid it from me, and hath not told me.
When she reached the man of God at the mountain, she
clung to his feet. Gehazi came over to
push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone, for her
soul is in deep distress, and the LORD has hidden it from me and has not told me.”
And the mother of the child said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her.
And the mother of the boy said, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, I will not leave you.” So he got up and followed her.
And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not
awaked.
Gehazi went on
ahead of them and laid the staff on the boy’s face, but there was no
sound or
response. So he went back to meet
Elisha and told him, “The boy has not
awakened.”
But
Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from before him: but
ere the
messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head? look, when the
messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: is not the
sound of his master’s feet behind him?
Now
Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a
messenger ahead, but before he arrived,
Elisha said to the elders, “Do you see how this murderer has sent someone to cut off my head? Look, when the
messenger comes, shut the door to keep him out. Is not the
sound of his master’s footsteps behind him?”
For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of
chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host: and they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel hath
hired against us the kings of the
Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us.
For the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the
sound of
chariots, horses, and a great army, so that they said to one another, “Look, the king of Israel must have
hired the kings of the
Hittites and Egyptians to attack us.”
And the guard stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, round about the king, from the right corner of the temple to the left corner of the temple, along by the altar and the temple.
And the guards stood with weapons in hand surrounding the king by the altar and the temple, from the south side to the north side of the temple.
Then
Jehoahaz sought the favor of the LORD, and the LORD
listened to him because He saw the oppression that the king of
Aram had inflicted on Israel.
And the king stood by a
pillar, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments and his
testimonies and his statutes with all their heart and all their
soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.
So the king stood by the
pillar and made a covenant before the LORD to follow the LORD and to keep His commandments, decrees, and statutes with all his heart and all his
soul, and to carry out the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people entered into the covenant.
And the high places that were before Jerusalem, which were on the right hand of the mount of corruption, which Solomon the king of Israel had builded for
Ashtoreth the
abomination of the Zidonians, and for
Chemosh the
abomination of the Moabites, and for Milcom the
abomination of the children of
Ammon, did the king
defile.
And like unto him was there no king before him, that turned to the LORD with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses; neither after him arose there any like him.
Neither before nor after
Josiah was there any king like him, who turned to the LORD with all his heart and with all his
soul and with all his strength, according to all the Law of Moses.
In four quarters were the
porters, toward the east, west, north, and
south.
The gatekeepers were stationed on the four sides: east, west, north, and south.
And it shall be, when thou shalt hear a
sound of going in the tops of the
mulberry trees, that then thou shalt go out to battle: for God is gone forth before thee to
smite the host of the Philistines.
As soon as you hear the
sound of marching in the tops of the
balsam trees, move out to battle, because this will mean that God has marched out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.”
For because ye did it not at the first, the LORD our God made a breach upon us, for that we sought him not after the due order.
It was because you Levites were not with us the first time that the LORD our God
burst forth in anger against us. For we did not
consult Him about the proper order.”
And David spake to the chief of the Levites to
appoint their brethren to be the singers with instruments of musick,
psalteries and harps and cymbals,
sounding, by lifting up the voice with joy.
David also told the leaders of the Levites to
appoint their relatives as singers to lift up their voices with joy, accompanied by musical instruments—harps, lyres, and cymbals.
So the singers, Heman,
Asaph, and
Ethan, were appointed to
sound with cymbals of brass;
The musicians Heman,
Asaph, and
Ethan were to
sound the bronze cymbals.
