Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.
So now, kill all the boys, as well as every woman who has had relations with a man,
But all the women children,
that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for
yourselves.
And
purify all your
raiment, and all
that is made of skins, and all work of goats’ hair, and all things made of wood.
And
purify every garment and leather good, everything made of goat’s hair, and every article of wood.”
Every thing
that may
abide the fire, ye shall make it go through the fire, and it shall be clean: nevertheless it shall be
purified with the water of separation: and all
that abideth not the fire ye shall make go through the water.
everything
that can
withstand the fire—must be put through the fire, and it will be clean. But it must still be
purified with the water of
purification. And everything
that cannot
withstand the fire must pass through the water.
And ye shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and ye shall be clean, and afterward ye shall come into the camp.
On the seventh day you are to wash your clothes, and you will be clean. After that you may enter the camp.”
Take the sum of the prey
that was taken, both of man and of beast, thou, and
Eleazar the priest, and the chief fathers of the congregation:
“You and
Eleazar the priest and the family heads of the congregation are to take a count of what was captured, both of man and beast.
And divide the prey into two parts; between them that took the war upon them, who went out to battle, and between all the congregation:
Then divide the
captives between the troops who went out to battle and the rest of the congregation.
And thirty and two thousand persons in all, of women that had not known man by lying with him.
and 32,000 women who had not
slept with a man.
And the half, which was the portion of them that went out to war, was in number three hundred thousand and seven and thirty thousand and five hundred sheep:
This was the half portion for those who had gone to war:
And of the children of Israel’s half, which Moses divided from the men
that warred,
From the Israelites’ half, which Moses had set apart from the men who had gone to war,
(Now the half
that pertained unto the congregation was three hundred thousand and thirty thousand and seven thousand and five hundred sheep,
this half belonged to the congregation: 337,500 sheep,
And all the gold of the offering that they offered up to the LORD, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.
All the gold
that the commanders of thousands and of hundreds presented as an offering to the LORD
weighed 16,750 shekels.
Now the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of
Gilead,
that, behold, the place was a place for cattle;
Now the Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks, surveyed the lands of Jazer and
Gilead, and they saw
that the region was suitable for
livestock.
And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD hath given them?
Why are you discouraging the Israelites from crossing into the land that the LORD has given them?
For when they went up unto the valley of
Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel,
that they should not go into the land which the LORD had given them.
For when your fathers went up to the Valley of
Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land
that the LORD had given them.
And the LORD’S anger was
kindled the same time, and he
sware, saying,
So the anger of the LORD was
kindled that day, and He
swore an oath, saying,
Surely none of the men
that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I
sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:
‘Because they did not follow Me wholeheartedly, not one of the men twenty years of age or older who came out of Egypt will see the land
that I
swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—
And the LORD’S anger was
kindled against Israel, and he made them
wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation,
that had done evil in the sight of the LORD, was consumed.
The anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He made them
wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation who had done evil in His sight was gone.
But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have
sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out.
But if you do not do this, you will certainly sin against the LORD—and be
assured that your sin will find you out.
Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth.
Build cities for your little ones and folds for your flocks, but do what you have promised.”
We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of
Canaan,
that the possession of our inheritance on this side Jordan may be ours.
We will cross over into the land of
Canaan armed before the LORD,
that we may have our inheritance on this side of the Jordan.”
And king
Arad the
Canaanite, which dwelt in the south in the land of
Canaan, heard of the coming of the children of Israel.
Now the
Canaanite king of
Arad, who lived in the Negev in the land of
Canaan, heard
that the Israelites were coming.
But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass,
that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall
vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.
But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land before you, those you allow to remain will become barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides; they will
harass you in the land where you settle.
Moreover it shall come to pass, that I shall do unto you, as I thought to do unto them.
And then I will do to you what I had
planned to do to them.”
Command the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land of
Canaan; (this is the land
that shall fall unto you for an inheritance, even the land of
Canaan with the coasts thereof:)
“Command the Israelites and say to them: When you enter the land of
Canaan, it will be
allotted to you as an inheritance with these boundaries:
And Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, This is the land which ye shall
inherit by lot, which the LORD commanded to give unto the nine tribes, and to the half tribe:
So Moses commanded the Israelites, “
Apportion this land by lot as an inheritance. The LORD has commanded
that it be given to the nine and a half tribes.
Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them.
“Command the Israelites to give, from the inheritance they will possess, cities for the Levites to live in and pasturelands around the cities.
And among the cities which ye shall give unto the Levites there shall be six cities for refuge, which ye shall
appoint for the
manslayer,
that he may
flee thither: and to them ye shall add forty and two cities.
Six of the cities you give the Levites are to be appointed as cities of refuge, to which a
manslayer may
flee. In addition to these, give the Levites forty-two other cities.
And the cities which ye shall give shall be of the possession of the children of Israel: from them that have many ye shall give many; but from them that have few ye shall give few: every one shall give of his cities unto the Levites according to his inheritance which he inheriteth.
The cities
that you
apportion from the territory of the Israelites should be given to the Levites in proportion to the inheritance of each tribe: more from a larger tribe and less from a smaller one.”
Then ye shall
appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you;
that the
slayer may
flee thither, which killeth any person at unawares.
And they shall be unto you cities for refuge from the
avenger;
that the
manslayer die not, until he stand before the congregation in judgment.
You are to have these cities as a refuge from the
avenger, so
that the
manslayer will not die until he stands trial before the assembly.
These six cities shall be a refuge, both for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the
sojourner among them:
that every one
that killeth any person unawares may
flee thither.
These six cities will serve as a refuge for the Israelites and for the foreigner or stranger among them, so
that anyone who kills a person
unintentionally may
flee there.
And if he
smite him with an instrument of iron, so
that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
If, however,
anyone strikes a person with an iron object and kills him, he is a murderer; the murderer must surely be put to death.
But if he thrust him of hatred, or
hurl at him by laying of wait,
that he die;
Or in
enmity smite him with his hand,
that he die: he
that smote him shall surely be put to death; for he is a murderer: the
revenger of blood shall
slay the murderer, when he meeteth him.
or if in hostility he strikes him with his hand and he dies, the one who struck him must surely be put to death; he is a murderer. When the
avenger of blood finds the murderer, he is to kill him.
Or with any stone,
wherewith a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it upon him,
that he die, and was not his enemy, neither sought his
harm:
or without looking drops a heavy stone
that kills him, but he was not an enemy and did not intend to
harm him,
And ye shall take no satisfaction for him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he should come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.
Nor should you accept a
ransom for the person who flees to a city of refuge and allow him to return and live on his own land before the death of the high priest.
So ye shall not
pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be
cleansed of the blood
that is shed therein, but by the blood of him
that shed it.
Do not
pollute the land where you live, for
bloodshed pollutes the land, and no
atonement can be made for the land on which the blood is shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it.
And every daughter, that possesseth an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel, shall be wife unto one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may enjoy every man the inheritance of his fathers.
Every daughter who possesses an inheritance from any
Israelite tribe must marry within a clan of the tribe of her father, so
that every
Israelite will possess the inheritance of his fathers.
These are the commandments and the judgments, which the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses unto the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan near
Jericho.
These are the commandments and ordinances
that the LORD gave the Israelites through Moses on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from
Jericho.
These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea, between
Paran, and Tophel, and
Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
These are the words
that Moses spoke to all Israel in the wilderness east of the Jordan—in the Arabah opposite Suph—between
Paran and Tophel,
Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
And it came to pass in the
fortieth year, in the
eleventh month, on the first day of the month,
that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all
that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them;
In the
fortieth year, on the first day of the
eleventh month, Moses proclaimed to the Israelites all
that the LORD had commanded him concerning them.
Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the LORD
sware unto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.
See, I have placed the land before you. Enter and possess the land
that the LORD
swore He would give to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and to their descendants after them.”
And I spake unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone:
At that time I said to you, “I cannot carry the burden for you alone.
The LORD your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.
The LORD your God has multiplied you, so
that today you are as numerous as the stars in the sky.
And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him.
At that time I charged your judges: “Hear the disputes between your brothers, and judge fairly between a man and his brother or a foreign resident.
Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God’s: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.
Show no
partiality in judging; hear both small and great alike. Do not be
intimidated by
anyone, for judgment belongs to God. And bring to me any case too difficult for you, and I will hear it.”
And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.
And at that time I commanded you all the things you were to do.
And when we departed from
Horeb, we went through all
that great and terrible wilderness, which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the
Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea.
And just as the LORD our God had commanded us, we set out from
Horeb and went toward the hill country of the
Amorites, through all the vast and
terrifying wilderness you have seen. When we reached Kadesh-barnea,
And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which the LORD our God
doth give us.
They took some of the fruit of the land in their hands, carried it down to us, and brought us word: “It is a good land that the LORD our God is giving us.”
The LORD your God which goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes;
The LORD your God, who goes before you, will fight for you, just as you saw Him do for you in Egypt
And in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how
that the LORD thy God bare thee, as a man
doth bear his son, in all the way
that ye went, until ye came into this place.
and in the wilderness, where the LORD your God carried you, as a man carries his son, all the way by which you traveled until you reached this place.”
Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see
that good land, which I
sware to give unto your fathers,
“Not one of the men of this evil generation shall see the good land I
swore to give your fathers,
Save
Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him will I give the land
that he hath
trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed the LORD.
except
Caleb son of Jephunneh. He will see it, and I will give him and his descendants the land on which he has set foot, because he followed the LORD wholeheartedly.”
Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.
And the little ones you said would become
captives—your children who on
that day did not know good from evil—will enter the land
that I will give them, and they will possess it.
Then ye answered and said unto me, We have
sinned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all
that the LORD our God commanded us. And when ye had
girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.
“We have
sinned against the LORD,” you replied. “We will go up and fight, as the LORD our God has commanded us.” Then each of you put on his weapons of war, thinking it easy to go up into the hill country.
And the
Amorites, which dwelt in
that mountain, came out against you, and
chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in
Seir, even unto Hormah.
Then the
Amorites who lived in the hills came out against you and
chased you like a
swarm of bees. They routed you from
Seir all the way to Hormah.
So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there.
For this reason you stayed in Kadesh for a long time—a very long time.
Ye shall
buy meat of them for money,
that ye may eat; and ye shall also
buy water of them for money,
that ye may drink.
You are to pay them in silver for the food you eat and the water you drink.’”
The Horims also dwelt in
Seir beforetime; but the children of
Esau succeeded them, when they had destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their
stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which the LORD gave unto them.
The Horites used to live in
Seir, but the descendants of
Esau drove them out. They destroyed the Horites from before them and settled in their place, just as Israel did in the land
that the LORD gave them as their possession.)
And the space in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we were come over the
brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the LORD
sware unto them.
The time we spent traveling from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the
Brook of Zered was thirty-eight years, until
that entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the LORD had
sworn to them.
That the LORD spake unto me, saying,
the LORD said to me,
(
That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the
Ammonites call them Zamzummims;
(
That too was regarded as the land of the
Rephaim, who used to live there, though the
Ammonites called them Zamzummites.
This day will I begin to put the
dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations
that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear report of thee, and shall
tremble, and be in
anguish because of thee.
This very day I will begin to put the
dread and fear of you upon all the nations under heaven. They will hear the reports of you and
tremble in
anguish because of you.”
Thou shalt sell me meat for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet;
You can sell us food to eat and water to drink in exchange for silver. Only let us pass through on foot,
(As the children of
Esau which dwell in
Seir, and the Moabites which dwell in Ar, did unto me;) until I shall pass over Jordan into the land which the LORD our God giveth us.
just as the descendants of
Esau who live in
Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for us, until we cross the Jordan into the land
that the LORD our God is giving us.”
But Sihon king of
Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the LORD thy God
hardened his spirit, and made his heart
obstinate,
that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.
But Sihon king of
Heshbon would not let us pass through, for the LORD your God had made his spirit
stubborn and his heart
obstinate,
that He might deliver him into your hand, as is the case this day.
And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess,
that thou mayest
inherit his land.
Then the LORD said to me, “See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his land over to you. Now begin to
conquer and possess his land.”
And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain:
At that time we captured all his cities and devoted to destruction the people of every city, including women and children. We left no survivors.
From Aroer, which is by the
brink of the river of
Arnon, and from the city
that is by the river, even unto
Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the LORD our God delivered all unto us:
From Aroer on the
rim of the
Arnon Valley, along with the city in the valley, even as far as
Gilead, not one city had walls too high for us. The LORD our God gave us all of them.
Only unto the land of the children of
Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river
Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto
whatsoever the LORD our God
forbad us.
But you did not go near the land of the
Ammonites, or the land along the banks of the
Jabbok River, or the cities of the hill country, or any place
that the LORD our God had forbidden.
And we took all his cities at
that time, there was not a city which we took not from them,
threescore cities, all the region of
Argob, the kingdom of
Og in
Bashan.
At
that time we captured all sixty of his cities. There was not a single city we failed to take—the entire region of
Argob, the kingdom of
Og in
Bashan.
And we took at
that time out of the hand of the two kings of the
Amorites the land
that was on this side Jordan, from the river of
Arnon unto mount
Hermon;
At
that time we took from the two kings of the
Amorites the land across the Jordan, from the
Arnon Valley as far as Mount
Hermon—
And this land, which we possessed at
that time, from Aroer, which is by the river
Arnon, and half mount
Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites.
So at
that time we took possession of this land. To the Reubenites and Gadites I gave the land beyond Aroer along the
Arnon Valley, and half the hill country of
Gilead, along with its cities.
And I commanded you at that time, saying, The LORD your God hath given you this land to possess it: ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Israel, all that are meet for the war.
At
that time I commanded you: “The LORD your God has given you this land to possess. All your men of
valor are to cross over, armed for battle,
ahead of your brothers, the Israelites.
But your wives, and your little ones, and your cattle, (for I know
that ye have much cattle,) shall
abide in your cities which I have given you;
But your wives, your children, and your
livestock—I know
that you have much
livestock—may remain in the cities I have given you,
Until the LORD have given rest unto your brethren, as well as unto you, and until they also possess the land which the LORD your God hath given them beyond Jordan: and then shall ye return every man unto his possession, which I have given you.
until the LORD gives rest to your brothers as He has to you, and they too have taken possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving them across the Jordan. Then each of you may return to the possession I have given you.”
And I commanded Joshua at
that time, saying, Thine eyes have seen all
that the LORD your God hath done unto these two kings: so shall the LORD do unto all the kingdoms
whither thou passest.
And at that time I commanded Joshua: “Your own eyes have seen all that the LORD your God has done to these two kings. The LORD will do the same to all the kingdoms you are about to enter.
And I
besought the LORD at
that time, saying,
At
that time I also
pleaded with the LORD:
O Lord GOD, thou hast begun to
shew thy servant thy greatness, and thy mighty hand: for what God is there in heaven or in earth,
that can do according to thy works, and according to thy might?
“O Lord GOD, You have begun to show Your greatness and power to Your servant. For what god in heaven or on earth can perform such works and mighty acts as Yours?
I pray thee, let me go over, and see the good land
that is beyond Jordan,
that goodly mountain, and
Lebanon.
Please let me cross over and see the good land beyond the Jordan—
that pleasant hill country as well as
Lebanon!”
But the LORD was
wroth with me for your sakes, and would not hear me: and the LORD said unto me, Let it suffice thee; speak no more unto me of this matter.
But the LORD was
angry with me on account of you, and He would not
listen to me. “
That is enough,” the LORD said to me. “Do not speak to Me again about this matter.
But charge Joshua, and
encourage him, and
strengthen him: for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to
inherit the land which thou shalt see.
But commission Joshua,
encourage him, and
strengthen him, for he will cross over
ahead of the people and enable them to
inherit the land
that you will see.”
Now therefore
hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them,
that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers giveth you.
Hear now, O Israel, the statutes and ordinances I am teaching you to follow, so that you may live and may enter and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you.
Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
You must not add to or
subtract from what I command you, so
that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God
that I am giving you.
Your eyes have seen what the LORD did because of
Baal-peor: for all the men
that followed
Baal-peor, the LORD thy God hath destroyed them from among you.
Your eyes have seen what the LORD did at
Baal-peor, for the LORD your God destroyed from among you all who followed
Baal of Peor.
But ye
that did
cleave unto the LORD your God are alive every one of you this day.
But you who held fast to the LORD your God are alive to this day, every one of you.
Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me,
that ye should do so in the land
whither ye go to possess it.
See, I have taught you statutes and ordinances just as the LORD my God has commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land that you are about to enter and possess.
For what nation is there so great, who hath God so
nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things
that we call upon him for?
For what nation is great enough to have a god as near to them as the LORD our God is to us whenever we call on Him?
And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?
And what nation is great enough to have righteous statutes and ordinances like this entire law I set before you
today?
Only take
heed to
thyself, and keep thy soul
diligently, lest thou
forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons;
Only be on your guard and
diligently watch
yourselves, so
that you do not
forget the things your eyes have seen, and so
that they do not slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and grandchildren.
Specially the day
that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in
Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words,
that they may learn to fear me all the days
that they shall live upon the earth, and
that they may teach their children.
The day you stood before the LORD your God at
Horeb, the LORD said to me, “Gather the people before Me to hear My words, so
that they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and
that they may teach them to their children.”
And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.
He declared to you His covenant, which He commanded you to follow—the Ten Commandments that He wrote on two tablets of stone.
And the LORD commanded me at
that time to teach you statutes and judgments,
that ye might do them in the land
whither ye go over to possess it.
At that time the LORD commanded me to teach you the statutes and ordinances you are to follow in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.
Take ye therefore good
heed unto
yourselves; for ye saw no manner of
similitude on the day
that the LORD spake unto you in
Horeb out of the midst of the fire:
So since you saw no form of any kind on the day the LORD spoke to you out of the fire at
Horeb, be careful
that you do not act corruptly and make an
idol for
yourselves of any form or shape, whether in the likeness of a male or female,
The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air,
of any beast
that is on the earth or bird
that flies in the air,
The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth:
or of any creature that crawls on the ground or fish that is in the waters below.
Furthermore the LORD was
angry with me for your sakes, and
sware that I should not go over Jordan, and
that I should not go in unto
that good land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance:
The LORD, however, was
angry with me on account of you, and He
swore that I would not cross the Jordan to enter the good land
that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
But I must die in this land, I must not go over Jordan: but ye shall go over, and possess that good land.
For I will not be crossing the Jordan, because I must die in this land. But you shall cross over and take possession of that good land.
