How is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy!
How is the city of praise not
forsaken, the town
that brings Me joy?
Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD of hosts.
For her young men will fall in the streets, and all her warriors will be silenced in that day,” declares the LORD of Hosts.
Arise, get you up unto the wealthy nation, that dwelleth without care, saith the LORD, which have neither gates nor bars, which dwell alone.
Rise up, advance against a nation at ease, one that dwells securely,” declares the LORD. “They have no gates or bars; they live alone.
And their camels shall be a
booty, and the multitude of their cattle a
spoil: and I will
scatter into all winds them
that are in the utmost corners; and I will bring their
calamity from all sides thereof, saith the LORD.
Their camels will become
plunder, and their large herds will be
spoil. I will
scatter to the wind in every direction those who
shave their temples; I will bring
calamity on them from all sides,” declares the LORD.
The word of the LORD
that came to Jeremiah the prophet against
Elam in the beginning of the reign of
Zedekiah king of Judah, saying,
This is the word of the LORD
that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning
Elam at the beginning of the reign of
Zedekiah king of Judah.
For I will cause
Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them
that seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them even my fierce anger, saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them:
So I will
shatter Elam before their foes, before those who seek their lives. I will bring
disaster upon them, even My fierce anger,” declares the LORD. “I will send out the sword after them until I finish them off.
But it shall come to pass in the latter days,
that I will bring again the captivity of
Elam, saith the LORD.
“Yet in the last days, I will restore
Elam from captivity,” declares the LORD.
The word that the LORD spake against Babylon and against the land of the Chaldeans by Jeremiah the prophet.
This is the word that the LORD spoke through Jeremiah the prophet concerning Babylon and the land of the Chaldeans:
In those days, and in
that time, saith the LORD, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and
weeping: they shall go, and seek the LORD their God.
“In those days and at
that time, declares the LORD, the children of Israel and the children of Judah will come together,
weeping as they come, and will seek the LORD their God.
They shall ask the way to
Zion with their faces
thitherward, saying, Come, and let us join ourselves to the LORD in a perpetual covenant
that shall not be forgotten.
They will ask the way to
Zion and turn their faces toward it. They will come and join themselves to the LORD in an
everlasting covenant
that will never be forgotten.
All who found them
devoured them, and their enemies said, ‘We are not guilty, for they have
sinned against the LORD, their true pasture, the LORD, the hope of their fathers.’
Remove out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the he goats before the flocks.
Flee from the midst of Babylon; depart from the land of the Chaldeans; be like the he-goats
that lead the flock.
Your mother shall be
sore confounded; she
that bare you shall be
ashamed: behold, the
hindermost of the nations shall be a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.
your mother will be greatly
ashamed; she who bore you will be disgraced. Behold, she will be the least of the nations, a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.
Because of the wrath of the LORD it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly
desolate: every one
that goeth by Babylon shall be
astonished, and hiss at all her plagues.
Because of the wrath of the LORD, she will not be inhabited; she will become completely
desolate. All who pass through Babylon will be
horrified and will hiss at all her wounds.
Put
yourselves in
array against Babylon round about: all ye
that bend the bow, shoot at her,
spare no arrows: for she hath
sinned against the LORD.
Line up in formation around Babylon, all you who draw the bow! Shoot at her!
Spare no arrows! For she has
sinned against the LORD.
Cut off the
sower from Babylon, and him
that handleth the
sickle in the time of harvest: for fear of the
oppressing sword they shall turn every one to his people, and they shall
flee every one to his own land.
Cut off the
sower from Babylon, and the one who wields the
sickle at harvest time. In the face of the
oppressor’s sword, each will turn to his own people, each will
flee to his own land.
In those days, and in
that time, saith the LORD, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will
pardon them whom I reserve.
In those days and at
that time, declares the LORD, a search will be made for Israel’s guilt, but there will be none, and for Judah’s sins, but they will not be found; for I will
forgive the
remnant I preserve.
Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: waste and utterly destroy after them, saith the LORD, and do according to all that I have commanded thee.
Go up against the land of Merathaim, and against the residents of Pekod. Kill them and
devote them to destruction. Do all
that I have commanded you,” declares the LORD.
The voice of them
that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in
Zion the
vengeance of the LORD our God, the
vengeance of his temple.
Listen to the fugitives and refugees from the land of Babylon, declaring in
Zion the
vengeance of the LORD our God, the
vengeance for His temple.
Call together the archers against Babylon: all ye
that bend the bow, camp against it round about; let none thereof escape:
recompense her according to her work; according to all
that she hath done, do unto her: for she hath been proud against the LORD, against the Holy One of Israel.
Summon the archers against Babylon, all who string the bow.
Encamp all around her; let no one escape. Repay her according to her deeds; do to her as she has done. For she has
defied the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.
Therefore shall her young men fall in the streets, and all her men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD.
Therefore, her young men will fall in the streets, and all her warriors will be silenced in that day,” declares the LORD.
Behold, I am against thee, O thou most proud, saith the Lord GOD of hosts: for thy day is come, the time that I will visit thee.
“Behold, I am against you, O
arrogant one,” declares the Lord GOD of Hosts, “for your day has come, the time when I will
punish you.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The children of Israel and the children of Judah were
oppressed together: and all
that took them
captives held them fast; they refused to let them go.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “The sons of Israel are
oppressed, and the sons of Judah as well. All their captors hold them fast, refusing to release them.
Their
Redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is his name: he shall throughly
plead their cause,
that he may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.
Their
Redeemer is strong; the LORD of Hosts is His name. He will
fervently plead their case so
that He may bring rest to the earth, but
turmoil to those who live in Babylon.
A sword is upon their horses, and upon their
chariots, and upon all the mingled people
that are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures; and they shall be
robbed.
A sword is against her horses and
chariots and against all the foreigners in her midst, and they will become like women. A sword is against her
treasuries, and they will be
plundered.
The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands waxed feeble:
anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in
travail.
The king of Babylon has heard the report, and his hands
hang limp.
Anguish has gripped him, pain like
that of a woman in labor.
Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan unto the
habitation of the strong: but I will make them suddenly run away from her: and who is a chosen man,
that I may
appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will
appoint me the time? and who is
that shepherd that will stand before me?
Behold, one will come up like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan to the watered pasture. For in an instant I will
chase Babylon from her land. Who is the chosen one I will
appoint for this? For who is like Me, and who can
challenge Me? What
shepherd can stand against Me?”
Therefore hear ye the counsel of the LORD,
that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes,
that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their
habitation desolate with them.
Therefore hear the plans
that the LORD has drawn up against Babylon and the strategies He has devised against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the little ones of the flock will be
dragged away; certainly their pasture will be made
desolate because of them.
Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and against them that dwell in the midst of them that rise up against me, a destroying wind;
This is what the LORD says: “Behold, I will
stir up against Babylon and against the people of Leb-kamai the spirit of a destroyer.
And will send unto Babylon fanners,
that shall
fan her, and shall empty her land: for in the day of trouble they shall be against her round about.
I will send strangers to Babylon to
winnow her and empty her land; for they will come against her from every side in her day of
disaster.
Against him
that bendeth let the archer bend his bow, and against him
that lifteth himself up in his
brigandine: and
spare ye not her young men; destroy ye utterly all her host.
Do not let the archer bend his bow or put on his
armor. Do not
spare her young men;
devote all her army to destruction!
Thus the slain shall fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and they that are thrust through in her streets.
And they will fall slain in the land of the Chaldeans, and pierced through in her streets.
Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD’S hand,
that made all the earth
drunken: the nations have
drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are
mad.
Babylon was a gold cup in the hand of the LORD, making the whole earth
drunk. The nations
drank her wine; therefore the nations have gone
mad.
Set up the standard upon the walls of Babylon, make the watch strong, set up the
watchmen, prepare the ambushes: for the LORD hath both devised and done
that which he spake against the inhabitants of Babylon.
Raise a
banner against the walls of Babylon; post the guard; station the
watchmen; prepare the
ambush. For the LORD has both devised and accomplished what He spoke against the people of Babylon.
O thou
that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come, and the measure of thy
covetousness.
You who dwell by many waters, rich in treasures, your end has come; the thread of your life is cut.
And I will render unto Babylon and to all the inhabitants of
Chaldea all their evil
that they have done in
Zion in your sight, saith the LORD.
Before your very eyes I will repay Babylon and all the dwellers of
Chaldea for all the evil they have done in
Zion,” declares the LORD.
One post shall run to meet another, and one
messenger to meet another, to
shew the king of Babylon
that his city is taken at one end,
And
that the passages are stopped, and the reeds they have burned with fire, and the men of war are
affrighted.
The fords have been seized, the marshes set on fire, and the soldiers are
terrified.”
In their heat I will make their feasts, and I will make them
drunken,
that they may
rejoice, and sleep a perpetual sleep, and not
wake, saith the LORD.
While they are
flushed with heat, I will serve them a feast, and I will make them
drunk so
that they may
revel; then they will fall
asleep forever and never
wake up, declares the LORD.
And I will
punish Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth
that which he hath
swallowed up: and the nations shall not flow together any more unto him:
yea, the wall of Babylon shall fall.
I will
punish Bel in Babylon. I will make him
spew out what he
swallowed. The nations will no longer stream to him; even the wall of Babylon will fall.
And lest your heart
faint, and ye fear for the rumour
that shall be heard in the land; a rumour shall both come one year, and after
that in another year shall come a rumour, and violence in the land, ruler against ruler.
Do not let your heart grow
faint, and do not be afraid when the
rumor is heard in the land; for a
rumor will come one year— and then another the next year— of violence in the land and of ruler against ruler.
Therefore, behold, the days come,
that I will do judgment upon the
graven images of Babylon: and her whole land shall be confounded, and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her.
Therefore, behold, the days are coming when I will
punish the idols of Babylon. Her entire land will suffer shame, and all her slain will lie fallen within her.
Then the heaven and the earth, and all that is therein, shall sing for Babylon: for the spoilers shall come unto her from the north, saith the LORD.
Then heaven and earth and all
that is in them will
shout for joy over Babylon because the destroyers from the north will come against her,” declares the LORD.
Ye
that have escaped the sword, go away, stand not still: remember the LORD
afar off, and let Jerusalem come into your mind.
You who have escaped the sword, depart and do not
linger! Remember the LORD from far away, and let Jerusalem come to mind.”
Wherefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD,
that I will do judgment upon her
graven images: and through all her land the wounded shall
groan.
“Therefore, behold, the days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will
punish her idols, and throughout her land the wounded will
groan.
The word which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, when he went with
Zedekiah the king of Judah into Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. And this Seraiah was a quiet prince.
This is the message
that Jeremiah the prophet gave to the
quartermaster Seraiah son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, when he went to Babylon with King
Zedekiah of Judah in the fourth year of
Zedekiah’s reign.
So Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon, even all these words that are written against Babylon.
Jeremiah had written on a single
scroll about all the
disaster that would come upon Babylon—all these words
that had been written concerning Babylon.
And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, When thou comest to Babylon, and shalt see, and shalt read all these words;
And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, “When you get to Babylon, see
that you read all these words
aloud,
Then shalt thou say, O LORD, thou hast spoken against this place, to cut it off,
that none shall remain in it, neither man nor beast, but
that it shall be
desolate for ever.
and say, ‘O LORD, You have promised to cut off this place so
that no one will remain—neither man nor beast. Indeed, it will be
desolate forever.’
And it shall be, when thou hast made an end of reading this book, that thou shalt bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of Euphrates:
When you finish reading this
scroll,
tie a stone to it and cast it into the Euphrates.
And thou shalt say, Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not rise from the evil
that I will bring upon her: and they shall be
weary. Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.
Then you are to say, ‘In the same way Babylon will sink and never rise again, because of the
disaster I will bring upon her. And her people will grow
weary.’” Here end the words of Jeremiah.
And he did
that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD, according to all
that Jehoiakim had done.
For through the anger of the LORD it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah, till he had cast them out from his presence,
that Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.
For because of the anger of the LORD, all this happened in Jerusalem and Judah, until He finally banished them from His presence. And
Zedekiah also rebelled against the king of Babylon.
And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it, and built forts against it round about.
So in the ninth year of
Zedekiah’s reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month,
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his entire army. They
encamped outside the city and built a siege wall all around it.
And in the fourth month, in the ninth day of the month, the famine was
sore in the city, so
that there was no bread for the people of the land.
By the ninth day of the fourth month, the famine in the city was so severe that the people of the land had no food.
And all the army of the Chaldeans,
that were with the captain of the guard,
brake down all the walls of Jerusalem round about.
And the whole army of the Chaldeans under the captain of the guard broke down all the walls around Jerusalem.
Then Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried away
captive certain of the poor of the people, and the residue of the people
that remained in the city, and those
that fell away,
that fell to the king of Babylon, and the rest of the multitude.
Then Nebuzaradan captain of the guard carried into exile some of the poorest people and those who remained in the city, along with the deserters who had defected to the king of Babylon and the rest of the
craftsmen.
Also the pillars of brass
that were in the house of the LORD, and the bases, and the
brasen sea
that was in the house of the LORD, the Chaldeans
brake, and carried all the brass of them to Babylon.
Moreover, the Chaldeans broke up the bronze pillars and stands and the bronze Sea in the house of the LORD, and they carried all the bronze to Babylon.
And the basons, and the firepans, and the
bowls, and the caldrons, and the candlesticks, and the spoons, and the cups;
that which was of gold in gold, and
that which was of silver in silver, took the captain of the guard away.
The captain of the guard also took away the basins, censers,
sprinkling bowls, pots, lampstands, pans, and drink offering
bowls—anything made of pure gold or fine silver.
The two pillars, one sea, and twelve
brasen bulls
that were under the bases, which king Solomon had made in the house of the LORD: the brass of all these vessels was without weight.
As for the two pillars, the Sea, the twelve bronze bulls under it, and the movable stands that King Solomon had made for the house of the LORD, the weight of the bronze from all these articles was beyond measure.
He took also out of the city an
eunuch, which had the charge of the men of war; and seven men of them
that were near the king’s person, which were found in the city; and the principal
scribe of the host, who
mustered the people of the land; and
threescore men of the people of the land,
that were found in the midst of the city.
Of those still in the city, he took a court official who had been appointed over the men of war, as well as seven trusted royal advisers. He also took the
scribe of the captain of the army, who had
enlisted the people of the land, and sixty men who were found in the city.
And it came to pass in the seven and
thirtieth year of the captivity of
Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the
twelfth month, in the five and
twentieth day of the month,
that Evil-merodach king of Babylon in the first year of his reign lifted up the head of
Jehoiachin king of Judah, and brought him forth out of prison,
On the twenty-fifth day of the
twelfth month of the thirty-seventh year of the exile of
Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the first year of the reign of Evil-merodach king of Babylon, he
pardoned Jehoiachin king of Judah and released him from prison.
And spake kindly unto him, and set his throne above the throne of the kings that were with him in Babylon,
And he spoke kindly to
Jehoiachin and set his throne above the thrones of the other kings who were with him in Babylon.
How
doth the city sit solitary,
that was full of people how is she become as a widow she
that was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how is she become tributary
How
lonely lies the city, once so full of people! She who was great among the nations has become a widow. The princess of the provinces has become a slave.
And from the daughter of
Zion all her beauty is departed: her princes are become like harts
that find no pasture, and they are gone without strength before the pursuer.
All the
splendor has departed from the Daughter of
Zion. Her princes are like deer
that find no pasture; they lack the strength to
flee in the face of the hunter.
Jerusalem remembered in the days of her
affliction and of her
miseries all her pleasant things
that she had in the days of old, when her people fell into the hand of the enemy, and none did help her: the
adversaries saw her, and did
mock at her sabbaths.
In the days of her
affliction and wandering Jerusalem remembers all the treasures
that were hers in days of old. When her people fell into enemy hands she received no help. Her enemies looked upon her,
laughing at her
downfall.
Jerusalem hath
grievously sinned; therefore she is removed: all
that honoured her
despise her, because they have seen her nakedness:
yea, she sigheth, and turneth backward.
Jerusalem has
sinned greatly; therefore she has become an object of
scorn. All who honored her now
despise her, for they have seen her nakedness; she herself groans and turns away.
The
adversary hath spread out his hand upon all her pleasant things: for she hath seen
that the heathen entered into her sanctuary, whom thou
didst command
that they should not enter into thy congregation.
The
adversary has seized all her treasures. For she has seen the nations enter her sanctuary— those You had forbidden to enter Your assembly.
Is it nothing to you, all ye
that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me,
wherewith the LORD hath
afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.
Is this nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look around and see! Is there any sorrow like mine, which was inflicted on me, which the LORD made me suffer on the day of His fierce anger?
For these things I
weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter
that should
relieve my soul is far from me: my children are
desolate, because the enemy prevailed.
For these things I
weep; my eyes flow with tears. For there is no one nearby to comfort me, no one to revive my soul. My children are destitute because the enemy has prevailed.
Zion spreadeth forth her hands, and there is none to comfort her: the LORD hath commanded concerning Jacob,
that his
adversaries should be round about him: Jerusalem is as a
menstruous woman among them.
Zion stretches out her hands, but there is no one to comfort her. The LORD has decreed against Jacob
that his neighbors become his foes. Jerusalem has become an unclean thing among them.
They have heard
that I
sigh: there is none to comfort me: all mine enemies have heard of my trouble; they are
glad that thou hast done it: thou
wilt bring the day
that thou hast called, and they shall be like unto me.
People have heard my
groaning, but there is no one to comfort me. All my enemies have heard of my trouble; they are
glad that You have caused it. May You bring the day You have
announced, so
that they may become like me.
He hath cut off in his fierce anger all the horn of Israel: he hath drawn back his right hand from before the enemy, and he burned against Jacob like a flaming fire, which devoureth round about.
In fierce anger He has cut off every horn of Israel and withdrawn His right hand at the approach of the enemy. He has burned in Jacob like a flaming fire that consumes everything around it.
He hath bent his bow like an enemy: he stood with his right hand as an
adversary, and
slew all
that were pleasant to the eye in the tabernacle of the daughter of
Zion: he poured out his
fury like fire.
He has bent His bow like an enemy; His right hand is positioned. Like a
foe He has killed all who were pleasing to the eye; He has poured out His wrath like fire on the tent of the Daughter of
Zion.
What thing shall I take to witness for thee? what thing shall I
liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? what shall I equal to thee,
that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of
Zion? for thy breach is great like the sea: who can
heal thee?
What can I say for you? To what can I compare you, O Daughter of Jerusalem? To what can I
liken you,
that I may
console you, O Virgin Daughter of
Zion? For your wound is as deep as the sea. Who can ever
heal you?
All
that pass by
clap their hands at thee; they hiss and
wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city
that men call The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth?
All who pass by
clap their hands at you in
scorn. They hiss and
shake their heads at the Daughter of Jerusalem: “Is this the city
that was called the perfection of beauty, the joy of all the earth?”
All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee: they hiss and
gnash the teeth: they say, We have
swallowed her up: certainly this is the day
that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it.
All your enemies open their mouths against you. They hiss and
gnash their teeth, saying, “We have
swallowed her up. This is the day for which we have waited. We have lived to see it!”
The LORD hath done
that which he had devised; he hath fulfilled his word
that he had commanded in the days of old: he hath thrown down, and hath not
pitied: and he hath caused thine enemy to
rejoice over thee, he hath set up the horn of thine
adversaries.
The LORD has done what He
planned; He has accomplished His decree, which He ordained in days of old; He has overthrown you without
pity. He has let the enemy
gloat over you and
exalted the horn of your foes.
Arise, cry out in the night: in the beginning of the watches pour out thine heart like water before the face of the Lord: lift up thy hands toward him for the life of thy young children,
that faint for hunger in the top of every street.
Arise, cry out in the night from the first watch of the night. Pour out your heart like water in the presence of the Lord. Lift up your hands to Him for the lives of your children who are
fainting from hunger on the corner of every street.
Thou hast called as in a solemn day my terrors round about, so
that in the day of the LORD’S anger none escaped nor remained: those
that I have
swaddled and brought up hath mine enemy consumed.
You summoned my attackers on every side, as for the day of an appointed feast. In the day of the LORD’s anger no one escaped or survived; my enemy has destroyed those I
nurtured and reared.
I am the man
that hath seen
affliction by the rod of his wrath.
I am the man who has seen
affliction under the rod of God’s wrath.
He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old.
He has made me dwell in darkness like those dead for ages.
He hath
hedged me about,
that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy.
He has walled me in so I cannot escape; He has
weighed me down with chains.
It is of the LORD’S
mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His
mercies never fail.
The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him.
It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.
It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.
It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.
It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is still young.
He giveth his
cheek to him
that smiteth him: he is filled full with reproach.
Let him offer his
cheek to the one who would strike him; let him be filled with reproach.
Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?
Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has ordained it?
Thou hast covered
thyself with a cloud,
that our prayer should not pass through.
You have covered
Yourself with a cloud
that no prayer can pass through.
Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not.
You drew near when I called on You; You said, “Do not be afraid.”
The lips of those
that rose up against me, and their
device against me all the day.
They
that did feed delicately are
desolate in the streets: they
that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills.
For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of
Sodom,
that was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands stayed on her.
The punishment of the daughter of my people is greater than
that of
Sodom, which was overthrown in an instant without a hand turned to help her.
They
that be slain with the sword are better than they
that be slain with hunger: for these pine away,
stricken through for want of the fruits of the field.
Those slain by the sword are better off than those who die of hunger, who waste away, pierced with pain because the fields lack produce.
The kings of the earth, and all the inhabitants of the world, would not have believed
that the
adversary and the enemy should have entered into the gates of Jerusalem.
The kings of the earth did not believe, nor any people of the world,
that an enemy or a
foe could enter the gates of Jerusalem.
For the sins of her prophets, and the
iniquities of her priests,
that have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her,
But this was for the sins of her prophets and the guilt of her priests, who shed the blood of the righteous in her midst.
They have
wandered as blind men in the streets, they have
polluted themselves with blood, so
that men could not touch their garments.
They
wandered blind in the streets,
defiled by this blood, so
that no one
dared to touch their garments.
As for us, our eyes as yet failed for our vain help: in our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save us.
All the while our eyes were failing as we looked in vain for help. We watched from our towers for a nation that could not save us.
