Also some of
the Philistines brought
Jehoshaphat presents, and tribute silver; and
the Arabians brought him flocks, seven thousand and seven hundred rams, and seven thousand and seven hundred he goats.
Some Philistines also brought gifts and silver as tribute to
Jehoshaphat, and
the Arabs brought him 7,700 rams and 7,700 goats from
their flocks.
And he had much business in the cities of Judah: and the men of war, mighty men of valour, were in Jerusalem.
and kept vast supplies in
the cities of Judah. He also had warriors in Jerusalem who were mighty men of
valor.
And these are the numbers of them according to the house of their fathers: Of Judah, the captains of thousands; Adnah the chief, and with him mighty men of valour three hundred thousand.
These are
their numbers according to
the houses of
their fathers: From Judah,
the commanders of thousands: Adnah
the commander, and with him 300,000 mighty men of
valor;
And next to him was Jehohanan
the captain, and with him two hundred and
fourscore thousand.
next to him, Jehohanan the commander, and with him 280,000;
And next him was Amasiah the son of Zichri, who willingly offered himself unto the LORD; and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of valour.
and next to him, Amasiah son of Zichri,
the volunteer for
the LORD, and with him 200,000 mighty men of
valor.
And next him was Jehozabad, and with him an hundred and
fourscore thousand ready prepared for
the war.
and next to him, Jehozabad, and with him 180,000 armed for battle.
These waited on
the king, beside those whom
the king put in
the fenced cities throughout all Judah.
These were the men who served the king, besides those he stationed in the fortified cities throughout Judah.
And after certain years he went down to
Ahab to Samaria. And
Ahab killed sheep and oxen for him in abundance, and for
the people that he had with him, and persuaded him to go up with him to
Ramoth-
gilead.
And some years later he went down to visit
Ahab in Samaria, where
Ahab sacrificed many sheep and cattle for him and
the people with him, and urged him to march up to
Ramoth-
gilead.
And
Ahab king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat king of Judah,
Wilt thou go with me to
Ramoth-
gilead? And he answered him, I am as thou art, and my people as thy people; and we will be with
thee in
the war.
Ahab king of Israel asked
Jehoshaphat king of Judah, “Will you go with me against
Ramoth-
gilead?” And
Jehoshaphat replied, “I am like you, and my people are your people; we will join you in
the war.”
And
Jehoshaphat said unto
the king of Israel,
Enquire, I pray
thee, at
the word of
the LORD to day.
But
Jehoshaphat also said to
the king of Israel, “Please inquire first for
the word of
the LORD.”
Therefore the king of Israel gathered together of prophets four hundred men, and said unto
them, Shall we go to
Ramoth-
gilead to battle, or shall I
forbear? And
they said, Go up; for God will deliver it into
the king’s hand.
So
the king of Israel assembled
the prophets, four hundred men, and asked
them, “Should we go to war against
Ramoth-
gilead, or should we
refrain?” “Go up,”
they replied, “and God will deliver it into
the hand of
the king.”
But
Jehoshaphat said, Is
there not here a prophet of
the LORD besides, that we might
enquire of him?
But
Jehoshaphat asked, “Is
there not still a prophet of
the LORD here of whom we can inquire?”
And
the king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat,
There is yet one man, by whom we may
enquire of
the LORD: but I
hate him; for he never
prophesied good unto me, but always evil:
the same is Micaiah
the son of Imla. And
Jehoshaphat said, Let not
the king say so.
The king of Israel answered, “
There is still one man who can ask
the LORD, but I
hate him because he never prophesies anything good for me, but only bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.” “
The king should not say that!”
Jehoshaphat replied.
And
the king of Israel called for one of his officers, and said,
Fetch quickly Micaiah
the son of Imla.
So the king of Israel called one of his officials and said, “Bring Micaiah son of Imlah at once.”
And
the king of Israel and
Jehoshaphat king of Judah sat either of
them on his throne, clothed in
their robes, and
they sat in a void place at
the entering in of
the gate of Samaria; and all
the prophets
prophesied before
them.
Dressed in royal
attire,
the king of Israel and
Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on
their thrones at
the threshing floor by
the entrance of
the gate of Samaria, with all
the prophets
prophesying before
them.
And
Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah had made him horns of iron, and said, Thus saith
the LORD, With
these thou shalt
push Syria until
they be consumed.
Now
Zedekiah son of Chenaanah had made for himself iron horns and declared, “This is what
the LORD says: ‘With
these you shall
gore the Arameans until
they are finished off.’”
And
the messenger that went to call Micaiah spake to him, saying, Behold,
the words of
the prophets declare good to
the king with one assent; let thy word
therefore, I pray
thee, be like one of
theirs, and speak thou good.
Then the messenger who had gone to call Micaiah
instructed him, “Behold, with one
accord the words of
the prophets are favorable to
the king. So please let your words be like
theirs, and speak
favorably.”
And Micaiah said, As the LORD liveth, even what my God saith, that will I speak.
But Micaiah said, “As surely as the LORD lives, I will speak whatever my God tells me.”
And when he was come to
the king,
the king said unto him, Micaiah, shall we go to
Ramoth-
gilead to battle, or shall I
forbear? And he said, Go ye up, and
prosper, and
they shall be delivered into your hand.
When Micaiah arrived,
the king asked him, “Micaiah, should we go to war against
Ramoth-
gilead, or should we
refrain?” “Go up and triumph,” Micaiah replied, “for
they will be given into your hand.”
And
the king said to him, How many times shall I
adjure thee that thou say nothing but
the truth to me in
the name of
the LORD?
But
the king said to him, “How many times must I make you
swear not to tell me anything but
the truth in
the name of
the LORD?”
Then he said, I did see all Israel scattered upon
the mountains, as sheep that have no
shepherd: and
the LORD said,
These have no master; let
them return
therefore every man to his house in peace.
So Micaiah declared: “I saw all Israel scattered on
the hills like sheep without a
shepherd. And
the LORD said, ‘
These people have no master; let each one return home in peace.’”
And
the king of Israel said to
Jehoshaphat, Did I not tell
thee that he would not
prophesy good unto me, but evil?
Then the king of Israel said to
Jehoshaphat, “Did I not tell you that he never prophesies good for me, but only bad?”
Again he said, Therefore hear the word of the LORD; I saw the LORD sitting upon his throne, and all the host of heaven standing on his right hand and on his left.
Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on His throne, and all the host of heaven standing on His right and on His left.
And
the LORD said, Who shall
entice Ahab king of Israel, that he may go up and fall at
Ramoth-
gilead? And one spake saying after this manner, and another saying after that manner.
And
the LORD said, ‘Who will
entice Ahab king of Israel to march up and fall at
Ramoth-
gilead?’ And one suggested this, and another that.
Then there came out a spirit, and stood before
the LORD, and said, I will
entice him. And
the LORD said unto him,
Wherewith?
Then a spirit came forward, stood before
the LORD, and said, ‘I will
entice him.’ ‘By what means?’ asked
the LORD.
And he said, I will go out, and be a lying spirit in
the mouth of all his prophets. And
the LORD said, Thou shalt
entice him, and thou shalt also prevail: go out, and do even so.
And he replied, ‘I will go out and be a lying spirit in
the mouths of all his prophets.’ ‘You will surely
entice him and prevail,’ said
the LORD. ‘Go and do it.’
Now therefore, behold, the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of these thy prophets, and the LORD hath spoken evil against thee.
So you see,
the LORD has put a lying spirit in
the mouths of
these prophets of yours, and
the LORD has pronounced
disaster against you.”
Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near, and
smote Micaiah upon
the cheek, and said, Which way went
the Spirit of
the LORD from me to speak unto
thee?
Then Zedekiah son of Chenaanah went up, struck Micaiah in
the face, and demanded, “Which way did
the Spirit of
the LORD go when He departed from me to speak with you?”
Then the king of Israel said, Take ye Micaiah, and carry him back to Amon
the governor of
the city, and to
Joash the king’s son;
And
the king of Israel declared, “Take Micaiah and return him to Amon
the governor of
the city and to
Joash the king’s son,
And say, Thus saith
the king, Put this fellow in
the prison, and feed him with bread of
affliction and with water of
affliction, until I return in peace.
and tell them that this is what the king says: ‘Put this man in prison and feed him only bread and water until I return safely.’”
And Micaiah said, If thou certainly return in peace,
then hath not
the LORD spoken by me. And he said,
Hearken, all ye people.
But Micaiah replied, “If you ever return safely,
the LORD has not spoken through me.”
Then he added, “Take
heed, all you people!”
And
the king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat, I will
disguise myself, and will go to
the battle; but put thou on thy robes. So
the king of Israel
disguised himself; and
they went to
the battle.
And
the king of Israel said to
Jehoshaphat, “I will
disguise myself and go into battle, but you wear your royal robes.” So
the king of Israel
disguised himself and went into battle.
Now
the king of Syria had commanded
the captains of
the chariots that were with him, saying, Fight ye not with small or great, save only with
the king of Israel.
Now
the king of
Aram had ordered his
chariot commanders, “Do not fight with
anyone, small or great, except
the king of Israel.”
And it came to pass, when
the captains of
the chariots saw
Jehoshaphat, that
they said, It is
the king of Israel.
Therefore they compassed about him to fight: but
Jehoshaphat cried out, and
the LORD helped him; and God moved
them to depart from him.
When
the chariot commanders saw
Jehoshaphat,
they said, “This is
the king of Israel!” So
they turned to fight against him, but
Jehoshaphat cried out, and
the LORD helped him. God drew
them away from him.
For it came to pass, that, when
the captains of
the chariots perceived that it was not
the king of Israel,
they turned back again from pursuing him.
And when
the chariot commanders saw that he was not
the king of Israel,
they turned back from pursuing him.
And a certain man drew a bow at a
venture, and
smote the king of Israel between
the joints of
the harness:
therefore he said to his
chariot man, Turn thine hand, that thou mayest carry me out of
the host; for I am wounded.
However, a certain man drew his bow without taking special aim, and he struck
the king of Israel between
the joints of his
armor. So
the king said to his
charioteer, “Turn around and take me out of
the battle, for I am badly wounded!”
And
the battle increased that day:
howbeit the king of Israel stayed himself up in his
chariot against
the Syrians until
the even: and about
the time of
the sun going down he died.
The battle
raged throughout that day, and
the king of Israel
propped himself up in his
chariot facing
the Arameans until evening. And at
sunset he died.
And
Jehoshaphat the king of Judah returned to his house in peace to Jerusalem.
When
Jehoshaphat king of Judah had returned safely to his home in Jerusalem,
And
Jehu the son of Hanani
the seer went out to meet him, and said to king
Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help
the ungodly, and love
them that
hate the LORD?
therefore is wrath upon
thee from before
the LORD.
Jehu son of Hanani
the seer went out to
confront him and said to King
Jehoshaphat, “Should you help
the wicked and love those who
hate the LORD? Because of this,
the wrath of
the LORD is upon you.
Nevertheless there are good things found in thee, in that thou hast taken away the groves out of the land, and hast prepared thine heart to seek God.
However, some good is found in you, for you have removed the Asherah poles from the land and have set your heart on seeking God.”
And
Jehoshaphat dwelt at Jerusalem: and he went out again through
the people from Beer-
sheba to mount Ephraim, and brought
them back unto
the LORD God of
their fathers.
Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem, and once again he went out among
the people from
Beersheba to
the hill country of Ephraim and turned
them back to
the LORD,
the God of
their fathers.
And he set judges in
the land throughout all
the fenced cities of Judah, city by city,
He appointed judges in the land, in each of the fortified cities of Judah.
And said to
the judges, Take
heed what ye do: for ye judge not for man, but for
the LORD, who is with you in
the judgment.
Then he said to the judges, “Consider carefully what you do, for you are not judging for man, but for the LORD, who is with you when you render judgment.
Wherefore now let
the fear of
the LORD be upon you; take
heed and do it: for
there is no iniquity with
the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.
And now, may
the fear of
the LORD be upon you. Be careful what you do, for with
the LORD our God
there is no injustice or
partiality or
bribery.”
Moreover in Jerusalem did
Jehoshaphat set of
the Levites, and of
the priests, and of
the chief of
the fathers of Israel, for
the judgment of
the LORD, and for
controversies, when
they returned to Jerusalem.
Moreover,
Jehoshaphat appointed in Jerusalem some of
the Levites, priests, and heads of
the Israelite families to judge on behalf of
the LORD and to settle disputes. And
they lived in Jerusalem.
And he charged them, saying, Thus shall ye do in the fear of the LORD, faithfully, and with a perfect heart.
He commanded them, saying, “You must serve faithfully and wholeheartedly in the fear of the LORD.
And what cause
soever shall come to you of your brethren that dwell in
their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and judgments, ye shall even
warn them that
they trespass not against
the LORD, and so wrath come upon you, and upon your brethren: this do, and ye shall not
trespass.
For every dispute that comes before you from your brothers who dwell in
their cities—whether it regards
bloodshed or some other
violation of law, commandments, statutes, or ordinances—you are to
warn them, so that
they will not
incur guilt before
the LORD and wrath will not come upon you and your brothers. Do this, and you will not
incur guilt.
And, behold, Amariah
the chief priest is over you in all matters of
the LORD; and Zebadiah
the son of
Ishmael,
the ruler of
the house of Judah, for all
the king’s matters: also
the Levites shall be officers before you. Deal
courageously, and
the LORD shall be with
the good.
Note that Amariah,
the chief priest, will be over you in all that pertains to
the LORD, and Zebadiah son of
Ishmael,
the ruler of
the house of Judah, in all that pertains to
the king. And
the Levites will serve as officers before you. Act
resolutely; may
the LORD be with
the upright!”
It came to pass after this also, that
the children of Moab, and
the children of
Ammon, and with
them other beside
the Ammonites, came against
Jehoshaphat to battle.
After this,
the Moabites and
Ammonites, together with some of
the Meunites, came to make war against
Jehoshaphat.
Then there came some that told
Jehoshaphat, saying,
There cometh a great multitude against
thee from beyond
the sea on this side Syria; and, behold,
they be Hazazon-tamar, which is En-gedi.
Then some men came and told
Jehoshaphat, “A vast army is coming against you from
Edom, from beyond
the Sea;
they are already in Hazazon-tamar” (that is, En-gedi).
And
Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek
the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.
Jehoshaphat was
alarmed and set his face to seek
the LORD. And he proclaimed a fast throughout Judah.
And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the LORD: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD.
So the people of Judah gathered to seek the LORD, and indeed, they came from all the cities of Judah to seek Him.
And
Jehoshaphat stood in
the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem, in
the house of
the LORD, before
the new court,
Then Jehoshaphat stood in
the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem in
the house of
the LORD in front of
the new
courtyard And said, O LORD God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all
the kingdoms of
the heathen? and in thine hand is
there not power and might, so that none is able to
withstand thee?
and said, “O LORD, God of our fathers, are You not the God who is in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in Your hand, and no one can stand against You.
Art not thou our God, who
didst drive out
the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to
the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever?
Our God, did You not drive out
the inhabitants of this land before Your people Israel and give it
forever to
the descendants of Abraham Your friend?
And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying,
They have lived in the land and have built in it a sanctuary for Your Name, saying,
If, when evil cometh upon us, as
the sword, judgment, or
pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto
thee in our
affliction,
then thou
wilt hear and help.
‘If
disaster comes upon us—whether sword or judgment, plague or famine—we will stand before this temple and before You, for Your Name is in this temple. We will cry out to You in our distress, and You will hear us and save us.’
And now, behold,
the children of
Ammon and Moab and mount
Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel
invade, when
they came out of
the land of Egypt, but
they turned from
them, and destroyed
them not;
And now, here are
the men of
Ammon, Moab, and Mount
Seir, whom You did not let Israel
invade when
they came out of
the land of Egypt; but Israel turned away from
them and did not destroy
them.
Behold, I say, how
they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to
inherit.
See how they are repaying us by coming to drive us out of the possession that You gave us as an inheritance.
O our God,
wilt thou not judge
them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon
thee.
Our God, will You not judge them? For we are powerless before this vast army that comes against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”
And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.
Meanwhile all the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, were standing before the LORD.
Then upon Jahaziel
the son of
Zechariah,
the son of Benaiah,
the son of Jeiel,
the son of Mattaniah, a
Levite of
the sons of
Asaph, came
the Spirit of
the LORD in
the midst of
the congregation;
Then the Spirit of
the LORD came upon Jahaziel son of
Zechariah,
the son of Benaiah,
the son of Jeiel,
the son of Mattaniah, a
Levite from
Asaph’s descendants, as he stood in
the midst of
the assembly.
And he said,
Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king
Jehoshaphat, Thus saith
the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for
the battle is not yours, but God’s.
And he said, “
Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem!
Listen, King
Jehoshaphat! This is what
the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army, for
the battle does not belong to you, but to God.
To
morrow go ye down against
them: behold,
they come up by
the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find
them at
the end of
the brook, before
the wilderness of Jeruel.
Tomorrow you are to march down against
them. You will see
them coming up
the Ascent of Ziz, and you will find
them at
the end of
the valley facing
the Wilderness of Jeruel.
Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set
yourselves, stand ye still, and see
the salvation of
the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to
morrow go out against
them: for
the LORD will be with you.
You need not fight this battle. Take up your positions, stand firm, and see
the salvation of
the LORD on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or discouraged. Go out and face
them tomorrow, for
the LORD is with you.’”
And
Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to
the ground: and all Judah and
the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before
the LORD,
worshipping the LORD.
Then Jehoshaphat bowed facedown, and all
the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down before
the LORD to worship Him.
And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high.
And
the Levites from
the Kohathites and Korahites stood up to praise
the LORD,
the God of Israel,
shouting in a very loud voice.
And
they rose early in
the morning, and went forth into
the wilderness of Tekoa: and as
they went forth,
Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in
the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye
prosper.
Early in
the morning
they got up and left for
the Wilderness of Tekoa. As
they set out,
Jehoshaphat stood up and said, “Hear me, O people of Judah and Jerusalem. Believe in
the LORD your God, and you will be
upheld; believe in His prophets, and you will succeed.”
And when he had consulted with
the people, he appointed singers unto
the LORD, and that should praise
the beauty of
holiness, as
they went out before
the army, and to say, Praise
the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.
Then Jehoshaphat consulted with
the people and appointed those who would sing to
the LORD and praise
the splendor of His
holiness. As
they went out before
the army,
they were singing: “Give
thanks to
the LORD, for His loving devotion endures
forever.”
And when
they began to sing and to praise,
the LORD set ambushments against
the children of
Ammon, Moab, and mount
Seir, which were come against Judah; and
they were
smitten.
The moment
they began
their shouts and praises,
the LORD set ambushes against
the men of
Ammon, Moab, and Mount
Seir who had come against Judah, and
they were defeated.
For
the children of
Ammon and Moab stood up against
the inhabitants of mount
Seir, utterly to
slay and destroy
them: and when
they had made an end of
the inhabitants of
Seir, every one helped to destroy another.
The Ammonites and Moabites rose up against
the inhabitants of Mount
Seir,
devoting them to destruction. And when
they had made an end to
the inhabitants of
Seir,
they helped to destroy one another.
And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped.
When the men of Judah came to a place overlooking the wilderness, they looked for the vast army, but there were only corpses lying on the ground; no one had escaped.
And when
Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away
the spoil of
them,
they found among
them in abundance both riches with
the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which
they stripped off for
themselves, more than
they could carry away: and
they were three days in gathering of
the spoil, it was so much.
Then Jehoshaphat and his people went to carry off
the plunder, and
they found on
the bodies an abundance of goods and valuables—more than
they could carry away.
They were gathering
the plunder for three days because
there was so much.
And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Berachah; for there they blessed the LORD: therefore the name of the same place was called, The valley of Berachah, unto this day.
On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah, where they blessed the LORD. Therefore that place is called the Valley of Beracah to this day.
Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and
Jehoshaphat in
the forefront of
them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for
the LORD had made
them to
rejoice over
their enemies.
Then all
the men of Judah and Jerusalem, with
Jehoshaphat at
their head, returned
joyfully to Jerusalem, for
the LORD had made
them rejoice over
their enemies.
And
they came to Jerusalem with
psalteries and harps and
trumpets unto
the house of
the LORD.
So
they entered Jerusalem and went into
the house of
the LORD with harps, lyres, and
trumpets.
And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries, when they had heard that the LORD fought against the enemies of Israel.
And the fear of God came upon all the kingdoms of the lands when they heard that the LORD had fought against the enemies of Israel.
So
the realm of
Jehoshaphat was quiet: for his God gave him rest round about.
Then Jehoshaphat’s kingdom was at peace, for his God had given him rest on every side.
And
Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Azubah
the daughter of Shilhi.
So
Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-five years. His mother’s name was Azubah daughter of Shilhi.
And he walked in
the way of
Asa his father, and departed not from it, doing that which was right in
the sight of
the LORD.
And
Jehoshaphat walked in
the way of his father
Asa and did not turn away from it; he did what was right in
the eyes of
the LORD.
Howbeit the high places were not taken away: for as yet
the people had not prepared
their hearts unto
the God of
their fathers.
The high places, however, were not removed; the people had not yet set their hearts on the God of their fathers.
Now
the rest of
the acts of
Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold,
they are written in
the book of
Jehu the son of Hanani, who is mentioned in
the book of
the kings of Israel.
As for
the rest of
the acts of
Jehoshaphat, from beginning to end,
they are indeed written in
the Chronicles of
Jehu son of Hanani, which are recorded in
the Book of
the Kings of Israel.
And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to
Tarshish: and
they made
the ships in Ezion-gaber.
They agreed to make ships to go to
Tarshish, and
these were built in Ezion-
geber.
Now
Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in
the city of David. And Jehoram his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Jehoshaphat rested with his fathers and was buried with
them in
the City of David. And his son Jehoram reigned in his place.
And
their father gave
them great gifts of silver, and of gold, and of precious things, with
fenced cities in Judah: but
the kingdom gave he to Jehoram; because he was
the firstborn.
Their father had given
them many gifts of silver and gold and precious things, as well as
the fortified cities in Judah; but he gave
the kingdom to Jehoram because he was
the firstborn.
Now when Jehoram was risen up to
the kingdom of his father, he strengthened himself, and
slew all his brethren with
the sword, and
divers also of
the princes of Israel.
When Jehoram had established himself over his father’s kingdom, he strengthened himself by putting to the sword all his brothers along with some of the princes of Israel.
And he walked in
the way of
the kings of Israel, like as did
the house of
Ahab: for he had
the daughter of
Ahab to wife: and he wrought that which was evil in
the eyes of
the LORD.
And Jehoram walked in
the ways of
the kings of Israel, just as
the house of
Ahab had done. For he married a daughter of
Ahab and did evil in
the sight of
the LORD.
Howbeit the LORD would not destroy
the house of David, because of
the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever.
Yet
the LORD was unwilling to destroy
the house of David, because of
the covenant He had made with David, and since He had promised to maintain a lamp for David and his descendants
forever.
In his days the Edomites revolted from under the dominion of Judah, and made themselves a king.
In
the days of Jehoram,
Edom rebelled against
the hand of Judah and appointed
their own king.
Then Jehoram went forth with his princes, and all his
chariots with him: and he rose up by night, and
smote the Edomites which compassed him in, and
the captains of
the chariots.
So Jehoram crossed into
Edom with his officers and all his
chariots. When
the Edomites surrounded him and his
chariot commanders, he rose up and attacked by night.
So
the Edomites revolted from under
the hand of Judah unto this day.
The same time also did
Libnah revolt from under his hand; because he had
forsaken the LORD God of his fathers.
So to this day
Edom has been in rebellion against
the hand of Judah. Likewise,
Libnah rebelled against his rule at
the same time, because Jehoram had
forsaken the LORD,
the God of his fathers.
Moreover he made high places in
the mountains of Judah, and caused
the inhabitants of Jerusalem to commit
fornication, and compelled Judah
thereto.
Jehoram had also built high places on
the hills of Judah; he had caused
the people of Jerusalem to
prostitute themselves and had led Judah
astray.
And
there came a writing to him from
Elijah the prophet, saying, Thus saith
the LORD God of David thy father, Because thou hast not walked in
the ways of
Jehoshaphat thy father, nor in
the ways of
Asa king of Judah,
Then a letter came to Jehoram from
Elijah the prophet, which stated: “This is what
the LORD,
the God of your father David, says: ‘You have not walked in
the ways of your father
Jehoshaphat or of
Asa king of Judah,
But hast walked in
the way of
the kings of Israel, and hast made Judah and
the inhabitants of Jerusalem to go a
whoring, like to
the whoredoms of
the house of
Ahab, and also hast slain thy brethren of thy father’s house, which were better than
thyself:
but you have walked in
the ways of
the kings of Israel and have caused Judah and
the people of Jerusalem to
prostitute themselves, just as
the house of
Ahab prostituted itself. You have also killed your brothers, your father’s family, who were better than you.
Behold, with a great plague will
the LORD
smite thy people, and thy children, and thy wives, and all thy goods:
So behold, the LORD is about to strike your people, your sons, your wives, and all your possessions with a serious blow.
And thou shalt have great sickness by disease of thy
bowels, until thy
bowels fall out by reason of
the sickness day by day.
And day after day you
yourself will suffer from a severe illness, a disease of your
bowels, until it causes your
bowels to come out.’”
