They have seen vanity and lying
divination, saying,
The LORD saith: and
the LORD hath not sent
them: and
they have made others to hope that
they would
confirm the word.
They see false visions and speak lying divinations.
They claim, ‘Thus declares
the LORD,’ when
the LORD did not send
them; yet
they wait for
the fulfillment of
their message.
Have ye not seen a vain vision, and have ye not spoken a lying
divination, whereas ye say,
The LORD saith it;
albeit I have not spoken?
Haven’t you seen a false vision and spoken a lying
divination when you
proclaim, ‘Thus declares
the LORD,’ even though I have not spoken?
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because ye have spoken vanity, and seen lies, therefore, behold, I am against you, saith the Lord GOD.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Because you have uttered vain words and seen false visions, I am against you, declares the Lord GOD.
And mine hand shall be upon the prophets that see vanity, and that divine lies: they shall not be in the assembly of my people, neither shall they be written in the writing of the house of Israel, neither shall they enter into the land of Israel; and ye shall know that I am the Lord GOD.
My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and speak lying divinations. They will not belong to the council of My people or be recorded in the register of the house of Israel, nor will they enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Lord GOD.
Because, even because
they have
seduced my people, saying, Peace; and
there was no peace; and one built up a wall, and, lo, others
daubed it with untempered
morter:
Because
they have led My people
astray, saying, ‘Peace,’ when
there is no peace, and
whitewashing any
flimsy wall that is built,
Say unto
them which
daub it with untempered
morter, that it shall fall:
there shall be an overflowing shower; and ye, O great hailstones, shall fall; and a
stormy wind shall
rend it.
Surely when
the wall has fallen, you will not be asked, ‘Where is
the whitewash with which you covered it?’
Therefore thus saith
the Lord GOD; I will even
rend it with a
stormy wind in my
fury; and
there shall be an overflowing shower in mine anger, and great hailstones in my
fury to
consume it.
Therefore this is what
the Lord GOD says: In My wrath I will release a
windstorm, and in My anger torrents of rain and
hail will fall with destructive
fury.
So will I break down
the wall that ye have
daubed with untempered
morter, and bring it down to
the ground, so that
the foundation
thereof shall be discovered, and it shall fall, and ye shall be consumed in
the midst
thereof: and ye shall know that I am
the LORD.
I will
tear down
the wall you
whitewashed and level it to
the ground, so that its foundation is exposed.
The city will fall, and you will be destroyed within it.
Then you will know that I am
the LORD.
Thus will I
accomplish my wrath upon
the wall, and upon
them that have
daubed it with untempered
morter, and will say unto you,
The wall is no more, neither
they that
daubed it;
And after I have
vented My wrath against
the wall and against those who
whitewashed it, I will say to you: ‘
The wall is gone, and so are those who
whitewashed it—
To wit,
the prophets of Israel which
prophesy concerning Jerusalem, and which see visions of peace for her, and
there is no peace, saith
the Lord GOD.
those prophets of Israel who
prophesied to Jerusalem and saw a vision of peace for her when
there was no peace, declares
the Lord GOD.’
Likewise, thou son of man, set thy face against
the daughters of thy people, which
prophesy out of
their own heart; and
prophesy thou against
them,
Now, O son of man, set your face against
the daughters of your people who
prophesy out of
their own imagination.
Prophesy against
them And say, Thus saith
the Lord GOD;
Woe to
the women that
sew pillows to all armholes, and make
kerchiefs upon
the head of every
stature to
hunt souls! Will ye
hunt the souls of my people, and will ye save
the souls alive that come unto you?
and tell
them that this is what
the Lord GOD says:
Woe to
the women who
sew magic charms on
their wrists and make veils for
the heads of people of every height, in order to
ensnare their souls. Will you
ensnare the souls of My people but preserve your own?
And will ye
pollute me among my people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, to
slay the souls that should not die, and to save
the souls alive that should not live, by your lying to my people that hear your lies?
You have
profaned Me among My people for handfuls of barley and scraps of bread. By lying to My people who would
listen, you have killed those who should not have died and
spared those who should not have lived.
Wherefore thus saith
the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against your
pillows,
wherewith ye
there hunt the souls to make
them fly, and I will
tear them from your arms, and will let
the souls go, even
the souls that ye
hunt to make
them fly.
Therefore this is what
the Lord GOD says: See, I am against
the magic charms with which you
ensnare souls like birds, and I will
tear them from your arms. So I will free
the souls you have ensnared like birds.
Your
kerchiefs also will I
tear, and deliver my people out of your hand, and
they shall be no more in your hand to be
hunted; and ye shall know that I am
the LORD.
I will also
tear off your veils and deliver My people from your hands, so that
they will no longer be prey in your hands.
Then you will know that I am
the LORD.
Because with lies ye have made
the heart of
the righteous
sad, whom I have not made
sad; and strengthened
the hands of
the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way, by promising him life:
Because you have
disheartened the righteous with your lies, even though I have caused
them no grief, and because you have encouraged
the wicked not to turn from
their evil ways to save
their lives,
Therefore ye shall see no more vanity, nor divine divinations: for I will deliver my people out of your hand: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
therefore you will no longer see false visions or practice
divination. I will deliver My people from your hands.
Then you will know that I am
the LORD.”
Then came certain of the elders of Israel unto me, and sat before me.
Then some of the elders of Israel came and sat down before me.
And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them?
“Son of man,
these men have set up idols in
their hearts and put wicked
stumbling blocks before
their faces. Should I
consult with
them in any way?
Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols;
Therefore speak to
them and tell
them that this is what
the Lord GOD says: ‘When any
Israelite sets up idols in his heart and puts a wicked
stumbling block before his face, and
then comes to
the prophet, I
the LORD will answer him according to his great
idolatry,
That I may take
the house of Israel in
their own heart, because
they are all
estranged from me through
their idols.
so that I may take hold of
the hearts of
the people of Israel. For because of
their idols,
they are all
estranged from Me.’
Therefore say unto
the house of Israel, Thus saith
the Lord GOD;
Repent, and turn
yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.
Therefore tell
the house of Israel that this is what
the Lord GOD says: ‘
Repent and turn away from your idols; turn your faces away from all your abominations.
For every one of
the house of Israel, or of
the stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth
the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to
enquire of him concerning me; I
the LORD will answer him by myself:
For when any
Israelite or any foreigner dwelling in Israel separates himself from Me, sets up idols in his heart, and puts a wicked
stumbling block before his face, and
then comes to
the prophet to inquire of Me, I
the LORD will answer him Myself.
And I will set my face against that man, and will make him a sign and a
proverb, and I will cut him off from
the midst of my people; and ye shall know that I am
the LORD.
I will set My face against that man and make him a sign and a
proverb; I will cut him off from among My people.
Then you will know that I am
the LORD.
And if
the prophet be
deceived when he hath spoken a thing, I
the LORD have
deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand upon him, and will destroy him from
the midst of my people Israel.
But if
the prophet is
enticed to speak a message,
then it was I
the LORD who
enticed him, and I will stretch out My hand against him and destroy him from among My people Israel.
And they shall bear the punishment of their iniquity: the punishment of the prophet shall be even as the punishment of him that seeketh unto him;
They will bear their punishment—the punishment of the inquirer will be the same as that of the prophet—
That
the house of Israel may go no more
astray from me, neither be
polluted any more with all
their transgressions; but that
they may be my people, and I may be
their God, saith
the Lord GOD.
in order that
the house of Israel may no longer
stray from Me and no longer
defile themselves with all
their transgressions.
Then they will be My people and I will be
their God, declares
the Lord GOD.’”
The word of the LORD came again to me, saying,
And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Son of man, when
the land sinneth against me by
trespassing grievously,
then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break
the staff of
the bread
thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it:
“Son of man, if a land sins against Me by acting unfaithfully, and I stretch out My hand against it to cut off its supply of food, to send famine upon it, and to cut off from it both man and beast,
Though
these three men,
Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it,
they should deliver but
their own souls by
their righteousness, saith
the Lord GOD.
then even if
these three men—
Noah, Daniel, and Job—were in it,
their righteousness could deliver only
themselves, declares
the Lord GOD.
If I cause
noisome beasts to pass through
the land, and
they spoil it, so that it be
desolate, that no man may pass through because of
the beasts:
Or if I send wild beasts through
the land to leave it childless and
desolate, with no man passing through it for fear of
the beasts,
Though
these three men were in it, as I live, saith
the Lord GOD,
they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters;
they only shall be delivered, but
the land shall be
desolate.
then as surely as I live, declares
the Lord GOD, even if
these three men were in it,
they could not deliver
their own sons or daughters.
They alone would be delivered, but
the land would be
desolate.
Or if I bring a sword upon that land, and say, Sword, go through the land; so that I cut off man and beast from it:
Or if I bring a sword against that land and say, ‘Let a sword pass through it,’ so that I cut off from it both man and beast,
Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they only shall be delivered themselves.
then as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, even if these three men were in it, they could not deliver their own sons or daughters. They alone would be delivered.
Though
Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, as I live, saith
the Lord GOD,
they shall deliver neither son nor daughter;
they shall but deliver
their own souls by
their righteousness.
then as surely as I live, declares
the Lord GOD, even if
Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it,
they could not deliver
their own sons or daughters.
Their righteousness could deliver only
themselves.
For thus saith
the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four
sore judgments upon Jerusalem,
the sword, and
the famine, and
the noisome beast, and
the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?
For this is what
the Lord GOD says: ‘How much worse will it be when I send against Jerusalem My four
dire judgments—sword, famine, wild beasts, and plague—in order to cut off from it both man and beast?
Yet, behold,
therein shall be left a
remnant that shall be brought forth, both sons and daughters: behold,
they shall come forth unto you, and ye shall see
their way and
their doings: and ye shall be comforted concerning
the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, even concerning all that I have brought upon it.
Yet, behold, some survivors will be left in it—sons and daughters who will be brought out.
They will come out to you, and when you see
their conduct and actions, you will be comforted regarding
the disaster I have brought upon Jerusalem—all that I have brought upon it.
And they shall comfort you, when ye see their ways and their doings: and ye shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, saith the Lord GOD.
They will bring you
consolation when you see
their conduct and actions, and you will know that it was not without cause that I have done all
these things within it,’ declares
the Lord GOD.”
And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Son of man, What is the vine tree more than any tree, or than a branch which is among the trees of the forest?
“Son of man, how does
the wood of
the vine
surpass any other branch among
the trees in
the forest?
Shall wood be taken
thereof to do any work? or will men take a pin of it to
hang any vessel
thereon?
Can wood be taken from it to make something useful? Or can one make from it a
peg on which to
hang utensils?
Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire devoureth both the ends of it, and the midst of it is burned. Is it meet for any work?
No, it is cast into
the fire for fuel.
The fire devours both ends, and
the middle is
charred. Can it be useful for anything?
Behold, when it was whole, it was meet for no work: how much less shall it be meet yet for any work, when
the fire hath
devoured it, and it is burned?
Even when it was whole, it could not be made useful. How much less can it ever be useful when
the fire has consumed it and
charred it!
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; As the vine tree among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so will I give the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Like the wood of the vine among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so I will give up the people of Jerusalem.
And I will set my face against
them;
they shall go out from one fire, and another fire shall
devour them; and ye shall know that I am
the LORD, when I set my face against
them.
And I will set My face against
them. Though
they may have escaped
the fire, yet another fire will
consume them. And when I set My face against
them, you will know that I am
the LORD.
And I will make
the land
desolate, because
they have committed a
trespass, saith
the Lord GOD.
Thus I will make
the land
desolate, because
they have acted unfaithfully,’ declares
the Lord GOD.”
Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
And say, Thus saith
the Lord GOD unto Jerusalem; Thy birth and thy
nativity is of
the land of
Canaan; thy father was an Amorite, and thy mother an Hittite.
and tell her that this is what
the Lord GOD says to Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth were in
the land of
the Canaanites. Your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.
On
the day of your birth your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water for
cleansing. You were not
rubbed with salt or
wrapped in cloths.
None eye
pitied thee, to do any of
these unto
thee, to have
compassion upon
thee; but thou
wast cast out in
the open field, to
the lothing of thy person, in
the day that thou
wast born.
No one cared enough for you to do even one of
these things out of
compassion for you. Instead, you were thrown out into
the open field, because you were
despised on
the day of your birth.
And when I passed by
thee, and saw
thee polluted in thine own blood, I said unto
thee when thou
wast in thy blood, Live;
yea, I said unto
thee when thou
wast in thy blood, Live.
Then I passed by and saw you
wallowing in your blood, and as you lay
there in your blood I said to you, ‘Live!’
There I said to you, ‘Live!’
I have caused
thee to multiply as
the bud of
the field, and thou hast increased and
waxen great, and thou art come to excellent ornaments: thy breasts are fashioned, and thine hair is grown, whereas thou
wast naked and bare.
I made you
thrive like a plant of
the field. You grew up and
matured and became very beautiful. Your breasts were formed and your hair grew, but you were naked and bare.
Now when I passed by
thee, and looked upon
thee, behold, thy time was
the time of love; and I spread my
skirt over
thee, and covered thy nakedness:
yea, I
sware unto
thee, and entered into a covenant with
thee, saith
the Lord GOD, and thou becamest mine.
Then I passed by and saw you, and you were indeed old enough for love. So I spread My
cloak over you and covered your nakedness. I
pledged Myself to you, entered into a covenant with you, and you became Mine, declares
the Lord GOD.
Then washed I
thee with water;
yea, I throughly washed away thy blood from
thee, and I
anointed thee with oil.
Then I bathed you with water,
rinsed off your blood, and
anointed you with oil.
I clothed
thee also with
broidered work, and
shod thee with badgers’ skin, and I
girded thee about with fine linen, and I covered
thee with silk.
I clothed you in
embroidered cloth and gave you
sandals of fine leather. I
wrapped you in fine linen and covered you with silk.
I decked thee also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain on thy neck.
I adorned you with
jewelry, and I put bracelets on your wrists and a chain around your neck.
And thy
renown went forth among
the heathen for thy beauty: for it was perfect through my
comeliness, which I had put upon
thee, saith
the Lord GOD.
Your fame spread among
the nations on account of your beauty, for it was perfect in
the splendor I bestowed on you, declares
the Lord GOD.
But thou
didst trust in thine own beauty, and playedst
the harlot because of thy
renown, and pouredst out thy fornications on every one that passed by; his it was.
But because of your fame, you trusted in your beauty and played
the harlot. You
lavished your favors on
everyone who passed by, and your beauty was
theirs for
the asking.
And of thy garments thou
didst take, and deckedst thy high places with
divers colours, and playedst
the harlot thereupon:
the like things shall not come, neither shall it be so.
You took some of your garments and made colorful high places for
yourself, and on
them you
prostituted yourself. Such things should not have happened; never should
they have occurred!
Thou hast also taken thy fair jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I had given
thee, and madest to
thyself images of men, and
didst commit
whoredom with
them,
You also took
the fine
jewelry of gold and silver I had given you, and you made male idols with which to
prostitute yourself.
And tookest thy
broidered garments, and coveredst
them: and thou hast set mine oil and mine incense before
them.
You took your
embroidered garments to cover
them, and you set My oil and incense before
them.
My meat also which I gave
thee, fine flour, and oil, and honey,
wherewith I fed
thee, thou hast even set it before
them for a sweet savour: and thus it was, saith
the Lord GOD.
And you set before
them as a pleasing
aroma the food I had given you—
the fine flour, oil, and honey that I had fed you. That is what happened, declares
the Lord GOD.
Moreover thou hast taken thy sons and thy daughters, whom thou hast borne unto me, and
these hast thou sacrificed unto
them to be
devoured. Is this of thy whoredoms a small matter,
You even took
the sons and daughters you bore to Me and sacrificed
them as food to idols. Was your
prostitution not enough?
That thou hast slain my children, and delivered them to cause them to pass through the fire for them?
You slaughtered My children and delivered them up through the fire to idols.
And in all thine abominations and thy whoredoms thou hast not remembered
the days of thy youth, when thou
wast naked and bare, and
wast polluted in thy blood.
And in all your abominations and acts of
prostitution, you did not remember
the days of your youth when you were naked and bare,
wallowing in your own blood.
And it came to pass after all thy wickedness, (
woe,
woe unto
thee! saith
the Lord GOD;)
Woe!
Woe to you, declares
the Lord GOD. And in addition to all your other wickedness,
That thou hast also built unto thee an eminent place, and hast made thee an high place in every street.
Thou hast built thy high place at every head of
the way, and hast made thy beauty to be
abhorred, and hast opened thy feet to every one that passed by, and multiplied thy whoredoms.
At
the head of every street you built your lofty shrines and
degraded your beauty. With increasing
promiscuity, you spread your legs to all who passed by.
Thou hast also committed
fornication with
the Egyptians thy neighbours, great of flesh; and hast increased thy whoredoms, to
provoke me to anger.
Behold,
therefore I have stretched out my hand over
thee, and have diminished thine ordinary food, and delivered
thee unto
the will of
them that
hate thee,
the daughters of
the Philistines, which are
ashamed of thy
lewd way.
Therefore I stretched out My hand against you and reduced your portion. I gave you over to
the desire of those who
hate you,
the daughters of
the Philistines, who were
ashamed of your
lewd conduct.
Thou hast played
the whore also with
the Assyrians, because thou
wast unsatiable;
yea, thou hast played
the harlot with
them, and yet couldest not be satisfied.
Then you
prostituted yourself with
the Assyrians, because you were not yet satisfied. Even after that, you were still not satisfied.
So you extended your
promiscuity to
Chaldea,
the land of merchants—but even with this you were not satisfied!
How weak is thine heart, saith
the Lord GOD, seeing thou doest all
these things,
the work of an
imperious whorish woman;
How weak-willed is your heart, declares
the Lord GOD, while you do all
these things,
the acts of a shameless
prostitute!
In that thou buildest thine eminent place in
the head of every way, and makest thine high place in every street; and hast not been as an
harlot, in that thou scornest
hire;
But when you built your mounds at
the head of every street and made your lofty shrines in every public square, you were not even like a
prostitute, because you
scorned payment.
They give gifts to all whores: but thou givest thy gifts to all thy lovers, and hirest
them, that
they may come unto
thee on every side for thy
whoredom.
Men give gifts to all
their prostitutes, but you gave gifts to all your lovers. You
bribed them to come to you from everywhere for your
illicit favors.
And the contrary is in thee from other women in thy whoredoms, whereas none followeth thee to commit whoredoms: and in that thou givest a reward, and no reward is given unto thee, therefore thou art contrary.
So your
prostitution is
the opposite of that of other women: No one
solicited your favors, and you paid a fee instead of receiving one; so you are
the very opposite!
Wherefore, O
harlot, hear
the word of
the LORD:
Therefore, O
prostitute, hear
the word of
the LORD!
Thus saith
the Lord GOD; Because thy
filthiness was poured out, and thy nakedness discovered through thy whoredoms with thy lovers, and with all
the idols of thy abominations, and by
the blood of thy children, which thou
didst give unto
them;
This is what
the Lord GOD says: Because you poured out your wealth and exposed your nakedness in your
promiscuity with your lovers and with all your
detestable idols, and because of
the blood of your children which you gave to
them,
Behold,
therefore I will gather all thy lovers, with whom thou hast taken pleasure, and all
them that thou hast loved, with all
them that thou hast
hated; I will even gather
them round about against
thee, and will discover thy nakedness unto
them, that
they may see all thy nakedness.
therefore I will surely gather all
the lovers with whom you found pleasure, all those you loved and all those you
hated. I will gather
them against you from all around and
expose you before
them, and
they will see you completely naked.
And I will judge
thee, as women that break
wedlock and shed blood are judged; and I will give
thee blood in
fury and jealousy.
And I will sentence you to
the punishment of women who commit
adultery and those who shed blood; so I will bring upon you
the wrath of your
bloodshed and jealousy.
And I will also give thee into their hand, and they shall throw down thine eminent place, and shall break down thy high places: they shall strip thee also of thy clothes, and shall take thy fair jewels, and leave thee naked and bare.
Then I will deliver you into
the hands of your lovers, and
they will level your mounds and
tear down your lofty shrines.
They will strip off your clothes, take your fine
jewelry, and leave you naked and bare.
They shall also bring up a company against thee, and they shall stone thee with stones, and thrust thee through with their swords.
They will bring a
mob against you, who will stone you and cut you to pieces with
their swords.
And
they shall burn thine houses with fire, and
execute judgments upon
thee in
the sight of many women: and I will cause
thee to cease from playing
the harlot, and thou also shalt give no
hire any more.
Then they will burn down your houses and
execute judgment against you in
the sight of many women. I will put an end to your
prostitution, and you will never again pay your lovers.
So will I make my
fury toward
thee to rest, and my jealousy shall depart from
thee, and I will be quiet, and will be no more
angry.
So I will lay to rest My wrath against you, and My jealousy will turn away from you.
Then I will be calm and no longer
angry.
Because thou hast not remembered
the days of thy youth, but hast
fretted me in all
these things; behold,
therefore I also will
recompense thy way upon thine head, saith
the Lord GOD: and thou shalt not commit this
lewdness above all thine abominations.
Because you did not remember
the days of your youth, but
enraged Me with all
these things, I will surely bring your deeds down upon your own head, declares
the Lord GOD. Have you not committed this
lewdness on top of all your other abominations?
Behold, every one that useth
proverbs shall use this
proverb against
thee, saying, As is
the mother, so is her daughter.
Thou art thy mother’s daughter, that lotheth her husband and her children; and thou art
the sister of thy sisters, which
lothed their husbands and
their children: your mother was an Hittite, and your father an Amorite.
You are
the daughter of your mother, who
despised her husband and children. You are
the sister of your sisters, who
despised their husbands and children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.
Yet hast thou not walked after
their ways, nor done after
their abominations: but, as if that were a very little thing, thou
wast corrupted more than
they in all thy ways.
And you not only walked in
their ways and practiced
their abominations, but soon you were more
depraved than
they were.
As I live, saith
the Lord GOD,
Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters.
As surely as I live, declares
the Lord GOD, your sister
Sodom and her daughters never did as you and your daughters have done.
Behold, this was
the iniquity of thy sister
Sodom, pride,
fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she
strengthen the hand of
the poor and
needy.
Now this was
the iniquity of your sister
Sodom: She and her daughters were
arrogant, overfed, and
complacent;
they did not help
the poor and
needy.
And
they were
haughty, and committed
abomination before me:
therefore I took
them away as I saw good.
Thus
they were
haughty and committed abominations before Me.
Therefore I removed
them, as you have seen.
Neither hath Samaria committed half of thy sins; but thou hast multiplied thine abominations more than they, and hast justified thy sisters in all thine abominations which thou hast done.
Furthermore, Samaria did not commit half
the sins you did. You have multiplied your abominations beyond
theirs, and all
the abominations you have committed have made your sisters appear righteous.
Thou also, which hast judged thy sisters, bear thine own shame for thy sins that thou hast committed more
abominable than
they:
they are more righteous than thou:
yea, be thou confounded also, and bear thy shame, in that thou hast justified thy sisters.
So now you must bear your disgrace, since you have brought
justification for your sisters. For
they appear more righteous than you, because your sins were more
vile than
theirs. So you too must bear your shame and disgrace, since you have made your sisters appear righteous.
When I shall bring again
their captivity,
the captivity of
Sodom and her daughters, and
the captivity of Samaria and her daughters,
then will I bring again
the captivity of thy
captives in
the midst of
them:
But I will restore
Sodom and her daughters from captivity, as well as Samaria and her daughters. And I will restore you along with
them.
That thou mayest bear thine own shame, and mayest be confounded in all that thou hast done, in that thou art a comfort unto them.
So you will bear your disgrace and be
ashamed of all you did to comfort
them.
When thy sisters,
Sodom and her daughters, shall return to
their former estate, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to
their former estate,
then thou and thy daughters shall return to your former estate.
And your sisters,
Sodom with her daughters and Samaria with her daughters, will return to
their former state. You and your daughters will also return to your former state.
For thy sister
Sodom was not mentioned by thy mouth in
the day of thy pride,
Did you not treat your sister
Sodom as an object of
scorn in
the day of your pride,
Before thy wickedness was discovered, as at
the time of thy reproach of
the daughters of Syria, and all that are round about her,
the daughters of
the Philistines, which
despise thee round about.
before your wickedness was uncovered? Even so, you are now
scorned by
the daughters of
Edom and all those around her, and by
the daughters of
the Philistines—all those around you who
despise you.
