Now Joshua was old and
stricken in years; and
the LORD said unto him, Thou art old and
stricken in years, and
there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed.
Now Joshua was old and well along in years, and the LORD said to him, “You are old and well along in years, but very much of the land remains to be possessed.
This is the land that yet remaineth: all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri,
This is the land that remains:
From Sihor, which is before Egypt, even unto
the borders of
Ekron northward, which is counted to
the Canaanite: five lords of
the Philistines;
the Gazathites, and
the Ashdothites,
the Eshkalonites,
the Gittites, and
the Ekronites; also
the Avites:
All
the territory of
the Philistines and
the Geshurites, from
the Shihor east of Egypt to
the territory of
Ekron on
the north (considered to be
Canaanite territory)—that of
the five
Philistine rulers of
Gaza,
Ashdod, Ashkelon,
Gath, and
Ekron, as well as that of
the Avvites;
From
the south, all
the land of
the Canaanites, and Mearah that is beside
the Sidonians, unto Aphek, to
the borders of
the Amorites:
to
the south, all
the land of
the Canaanites, from Mearah of
the Sidonians to Aphek, as far as
the border of
the Amorites;
All
the inhabitants of
the hill country from
Lebanon unto Misrephoth-
maim, and all
the Sidonians,
them will I drive out from before
the children of Israel: only divide thou it by lot unto
the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded
thee.
All
the inhabitants of
the hill country from
Lebanon to Misrephoth-
maim—all
the Sidonians—I Myself will drive out before
the Israelites. Be sure to divide it by lot as an inheritance to Israel, as I have commanded you.
Now
therefore divide this land for an inheritance unto
the nine tribes, and
the half tribe of
Manasseh,
Now
therefore divide this land as an inheritance to
the nine tribes and
the half-tribe of
Manasseh.”
With whom the Reubenites and the Gadites have received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of the LORD gave them;
The other half of
Manasseh, along with
the Reubenites and Gadites, had received
the inheritance Moses had given
them beyond
the Jordan to
the east, just as Moses
the servant of
the LORD had assigned to
them:
From Aroer, that is upon
the bank of
the river
Arnon, and
the city that is in
the midst of
the river, and all
the plain of Medeba unto Dibon;
The area from Aroer on
the rim of
the Arnon Valley, along with
the city in
the middle of
the valley,
the whole plateau of Medeba as far as Dibon,
And all
the cities of Sihon king of
the Amorites, which reigned in
Heshbon, unto
the border of
the children of
Ammon;
And
Gilead, and
the border of
the Geshurites and Maachathites, and all mount
Hermon, and all
Bashan unto Salcah;
also
Gilead and
the territory of
the Geshurites and Maacathites, all of Mount
Hermon, and all
Bashan as far as Salecah—
All
the kingdom of
Og in
Bashan, which reigned in
Ashtaroth and in Edrei, who remained of
the remnant of
the giants: for
these did Moses
smite, and cast
them out.
the whole kingdom of
Og in
Bashan, who had reigned in
Ashtaroth and Edrei and had remained as a
remnant of
the Rephaim. Moses had struck
them down and dispossessed
them,
Nevertheless the children of Israel expelled not the Geshurites, nor the Maachathites: but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day.
but the Israelites did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites. So Geshur and Maacath dwell among the Israelites to this day.
Only unto the tribe of Levi he gave none inheritance; the sacrifices of the LORD God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as he said unto them.
To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance. The offerings made by fire to the LORD, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, just as He had promised them.
And Moses gave unto
the tribe of
the children of
Reuben inheritance according to
their families.
This is what Moses had given to
the clans of
the tribe of
Reuben:
And
their coast was from Aroer, that is on
the bank of
the river
Arnon, and
the city that is in
the midst of
the river, and all
the plain by Medeba;
The territory from Aroer on
the rim of
the Arnon Valley, along with
the city in
the middle of
the valley, to
the whole plateau beyond Medeba,
Heshbon, and all her cities that are in
the plain; Dibon, and Bamoth-
baal, and Beth-
baal-meon,
to
Heshbon and all its cities on
the plateau, including Dibon, Bamoth-
baal, Beth-
baal-meon,
And Kirjathaim, and Sibmah, and Zareth-shahar in the mount of the valley,
Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth-shahar on the hill in the valley,
And Beth-peor, and Ashdoth-
pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth,
Beth-peor,
the slopes of
Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth—
And all
the cities of
the plain, and all
the kingdom of Sihon king of
the Amorites, which reigned in
Heshbon, whom Moses
smote with
the princes of
Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, which were dukes of Sihon, dwelling in
the country.
all
the cities of
the plateau and all
the kingdom of Sihon king of
the Amorites, who reigned in
Heshbon until Moses killed him and
the chiefs of
Midian (Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba),
the princes of Sihon who lived in
the land.
Balaam also
the son of Beor,
the soothsayer, did
the children of Israel
slay with
the sword among
them that were slain by
them.
The Israelites also killed
the diviner
Balaam son of Beor along with
the others
they put to
the sword.
And
the border of
the children of
Reuben was Jordan, and
the border
thereof. This was
the inheritance of
the children of
Reuben after
their families,
the cities and
the villages
thereof.
And the border of the Reubenites was the bank of the Jordan. This was the inheritance of the clans of the Reubenites, including the cities and villages.
And Moses gave inheritance unto
the tribe of
Gad, even unto
the children of
Gad according to
their families.
This is what Moses had given to
the clans of
the tribe of
Gad:
And
their coast was Jazer, and all
the cities of
Gilead, and half
the land of
the children of
Ammon, unto Aroer that is before Rabbah;
The territory of Jazer, all
the cities of
Gilead, and half
the land of
the Ammonites as far as Aroer, near Rabbah;
And from
Heshbon unto Ramath-mizpeh, and Betonim; and from
Mahanaim unto
the border of Debir;
the territory from
Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from
Mahanaim to
the border of Debir;
And in
the valley, Beth-
aram, and Beth-nimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon,
the rest of
the kingdom of Sihon king of
Heshbon, Jordan and his border, even unto
the edge of
the sea of Chinnereth on
the other side Jordan eastward.
and in
the valley, Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, with
the rest of
the kingdom of Sihon king of
Heshbon (
the territory on
the east side of
the Jordan up to
the edge of
the Sea of Chinnereth).
This is
the inheritance of
the children of
Gad after
their families,
the cities, and
their villages.
This was the inheritance of the clans of the Gadites, including the cities and villages.
And Moses gave inheritance unto
the half tribe of
Manasseh: and this was
the possession of
the half tribe of
the children of
Manasseh by
their families.
This is what Moses had given to
the clans of
the half-tribe of
Manasseh, that is, to half
the tribe of
the descendants of
Manasseh:
And half
Gilead, and
Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of
the kingdom of
Og in
Bashan, were pertaining unto
the children of Machir
the son of
Manasseh, even to
the one half of
the children of Machir by
their families.
half of
Gilead; and
Ashtaroth and Edrei,
the royal cities of
Og in
Bashan. All this was for
the clans of
the descendants of Machir son of
Manasseh, that is, half of
the descendants of Machir.
These are
the countries which Moses did distribute for inheritance in
the plains of Moab, on
the other side Jordan, by
Jericho, eastward.
These were
the portions Moses had given
them on
the plains of Moab beyond
the Jordan, east of
Jericho.
But unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave not any inheritance: the LORD God of Israel was their inheritance, as he said unto them.
To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance. The LORD, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, just as He had promised them.
And
these are
the countries which
the children of Israel inherited in
the land of
Canaan, which
Eleazar the priest, and Joshua
the son of
Nun, and
the heads of
the fathers of
the tribes of
the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance to
them.
Now
these are
the portions that
the Israelites inherited in
the land of
Canaan, as distributed by
Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of
Nun, and
the heads of
the families of
the tribes of Israel.
By lot was their inheritance, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes, and for the half tribe.
Their inheritance was assigned by lot for the nine and a half tribes, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.
For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes and an half tribe on the other side Jordan: but unto the Levites he gave none inheritance among them.
For Moses had given the inheritance east of the Jordan to the other two and a half tribes. But he granted no inheritance among them to the Levites.
For
the children of Joseph were two tribes,
Manasseh and Ephraim:
therefore they gave no part unto
the Levites in
the land, save cities to dwell in, with
their suburbs for
their cattle and for
their substance.
The descendants of Joseph became two tribes,
Manasseh and Ephraim. And no portion of
the land was given to
the Levites, except for cities in which to live, along with pasturelands for
their flocks and herds.
As the LORD commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did, and they divided the land.
So the Israelites did as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they divided the land.
Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in
Gilgal: and
Caleb the son of Jephunneh
the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest
the thing that
the LORD said unto Moses
the man of God concerning me and
thee in Kadesh-barnea.
Then the sons of Judah approached Joshua at
Gilgal, and
Caleb son of Jephunneh
the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what
the LORD said to Moses
the man of God at Kadesh-barnea about you and me.
Forty years old was I when Moses
the servant of
the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to
espy out
the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart.
I was forty years old when Moses
the servant of
the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to
spy out
the land, and I brought back to him an
honest report.
Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made
the heart of
the people
melt: but I wholly followed
the LORD my God.
Although my brothers who went with me made
the hearts of
the people
melt with fear, I remained
loyal to
the LORD my God.
And Moses
sware on that day, saying, Surely
the land
whereon thy feet have
trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children’s for ever, because thou hast wholly followed
the LORD my God.
On that day Moses
swore to me, saying, ‘Surely
the land on which you have set foot will be an inheritance to you and your children
forever, because you have wholly followed
the LORD my God.’
And now, behold,
the LORD hath kept me alive, as he said,
these forty and five years, even since
the LORD spake this word unto Moses, while
the children of Israel
wandered in
the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day
fourscore and five years old.
Now behold, as
the LORD promised, He has kept me alive
these forty-five years since He spoke this word to Moses, while Israel
wandered in
the wilderness. So here I am
today, eighty-five years old,
As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.
still as strong
today as I was
the day Moses sent me out. As my strength was
then, so it is now for war, for going out, and for coming in.
Now
therefore give me this mountain,
whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how
the Anakims were
there, and that
the cities were great and
fenced: if so be
the LORD will be with me,
then I shall be able to drive
them out, as
the LORD said.
Now
therefore give me this hill country that
the LORD promised me on that day, for you
yourself heard
then that
the Anakim were
there, with great and fortified cities. Perhaps with
the LORD’s help I will drive
them out, as
the LORD has spoken.”
And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto
Caleb the son of Jephunneh
Hebron for an inheritance.
Then Joshua blessed
Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him
Hebron as his inheritance.
Hebron therefore became
the inheritance of
Caleb the son of Jephunneh
the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed
the LORD God of Israel.
Therefore Hebron belongs to
Caleb son of Jephunneh
the Kenizzite as an inheritance to this day, because he wholly followed
the LORD,
the God of Israel.
And
the name of
Hebron before was Kirjath-arba; which Arba was a great man among
the Anakims. And
the land had rest from war.
(
Hebron used to be called Kiriath-arba, after Arba,
the greatest man among
the Anakim.)
Then the land had rest from war.
This
then was
the lot of
the tribe of
the children of Judah by
their families; even to
the border of
Edom the wilderness of Zin southward was
the uttermost part of
the south coast.
Now
the allotment for
the clans of
the tribe of Judah extended to
the border of
Edom, to
the Wilderness of Zin at
the extreme southern boundary:
And their south border was from the shore of the salt sea, from the bay that looketh southward:
Their southern border started at
the bay on
the southern
tip of
the Salt Sea,
And it went out to
the south side to Maaleh-acrabbim, and passed along to Zin, and ascended up on
the south side unto Kadesh-barnea, and passed along to Hezron, and went up to
Adar, and
fetched a compass to Karkaa:
proceeded south of
the Ascent of Akrabbim, continued on to Zin, went over to
the south of Kadesh-barnea, ran past Hezron up to Addar, and curved toward Karka.
From thence it passed toward Azmon, and went out unto the river of Egypt; and the goings out of that coast were at the sea: this shall be your south coast.
It proceeded to Azmon, joined
the Brook of Egypt, and ended at
the Sea. This was
their southern border.
And
the east border was
the salt sea, even unto
the end of Jordan. And
their border in
the north quarter was from
the bay of
the sea at
the uttermost part of Jordan:
The eastern border was the Salt Sea as far as the mouth of the Jordan.
And
the border went up to Beth-hogla, and passed along by
the north of Beth-arabah; and
the border went up to
the stone of Bohan
the son of
Reuben:
The northern border started from
the bay of
the sea at
the mouth of
the Jordan, went up to Beth-hoglah, proceeded north of Beth-arabah, and went up to
the Stone of Bohan son of
Reuben.
And
the border went up toward Debir from
the valley of
Achor, and so northward, looking toward
Gilgal, that is before
the going up to Adummim, which is on
the south side of
the river: and
the border passed toward
the waters of En-shemesh, and
the goings out
thereof were at En-rogel:
Then the border went up to Debir from
the Valley of
Achor, turning north to
Gilgal, which faces
the Ascent of Adummim south of
the ravine. It continued along
the waters of En-shemesh and came out at En-rogel.
And
the border went up by
the valley of
the son of
Hinnom unto
the south side of
the Jebusite;
the same is Jerusalem: and
the border went up to
the top of
the mountain that lieth before
the valley of
Hinnom westward, which is at
the end of
the valley of
the giants northward:
From
there the border went up
the Valley of
Hinnom along
the southern slope of
the Jebusites (that is, Jerusalem) and ascended to
the top of
the hill that faces
the Valley of
Hinnom on
the west, at
the northern end of
the Valley of
Rephaim.
And the border was drawn from the top of the hill unto the fountain of the water of Nephtoah, and went out to the cities of mount Ephron; and the border was drawn to Baalah, which is Kirjath-jearim:
From
the hilltop the border curved to
the spring of
the Waters of Nephtoah, proceeded to
the cities of Mount Ephron, and
then bent around toward Baalah (that is, Kiriath-jearim).
And
the border compassed from Baalah westward unto mount
Seir, and passed along unto
the side of mount Jearim, which is Chesalon, on
the north side, and went down to Beth-shemesh, and passed on to Timnah:
The border
curled westward from Baalah to Mount
Seir, ran along
the northern slope of Mount Jearim (that is, Chesalon), went down to Beth-shemesh, and crossed to Timnah.
And
the border went out unto
the side of
Ekron northward: and
the border was drawn to Shicron, and passed along to mount Baalah, and went out unto Jabneel; and
the goings out of
the border were at
the sea.
Then it went out to
the northern slope of
Ekron, curved toward Shikkeron, proceeded to Mount Baalah, went on to Jabneel, and ended at
the Sea.
And the west border was to the great sea, and the coast thereof. This is the coast of the children of Judah round about according to their families.
And the western border was the coastline of the Great Sea. These are the boundaries around the clans of the descendants of Judah.
And unto
Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a part among
the children of Judah, according to
the commandment of
the LORD to Joshua, even
the city of Arba
the father of
Anak, which city is
Hebron.
According to
the LORD’s command to him, Joshua gave
Caleb son of Jephunneh a portion among
the sons of Judah—Kiriath-arba, that is,
Hebron. (Arba was
the forefather of
Anak.)
And
Caleb drove
thence the three sons of
Anak, Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai,
the children of
Anak.
And
Caleb drove out from
there the three sons of
Anak—
the descendants of Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai,
the children of
Anak.
And he went up thence to the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher.
From there he marched against the inhabitants of Debir (formerly known as Kiriath-sepher).
And
Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
And
Caleb said, “To
the man who strikes down Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage.”
And Othniel
the son of Kenaz,
the brother of
Caleb, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.
So Othniel son of
Caleb’s brother Kenaz captured
the city, and
Caleb gave his daughter Acsah to him in marriage.
Who answered, Give me a blessing; for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And he gave her
the upper springs, and
the nether springs.
“Give me a blessing,” she answered. “Since you have given me land in
the Negev, give me springs of water as well.” So
Caleb gave her both
the upper and lower springs.
This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families.
This is the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Judah.
And
the uttermost cities of
the tribe of
the children of Judah toward
the coast of
Edom southward were Kabzeel, and Eder, and Jagur,
These were
the southernmost cities of
the tribe of Judah in
the Negev toward
the border of
Edom:
And Lebaoth, and Shilhim, and
Ain, and
Rimmon: all
the cities are twenty and nine, with
their villages:
Lebaoth, Shilhim,
Ain, and
Rimmon—twenty-nine cities in all, along with
their villages.
And in the valley, Eshtaol, and Zoreah, and Ashnah,
These were in the foothills:
And Sharaim, and Adithaim, and Gederah, and Gederothaim; fourteen cities with their villages:
Shaaraim, Adithaim, and Gederah (or Gederothaim)—fourteen cities, along with their villages.
And Gederoth, Beth-
dagon, and Naamah, and Makkedah; sixteen cities with
their villages:
Gederoth, Beth-
dagon, Naamah, and Makkedah—sixteen cities, along with
their villages.
And Keilah, and
Achzib, and Mareshah; nine cities with
their villages:
Keilah,
Achzib, and Mareshah—nine cities, along with
their villages.
From
Ekron even unto
the sea, all that lay near
Ashdod, with
their villages:
from
Ekron to
the sea, all
the cities near
Ashdod, along with
their villages;
Ashdod with her towns and her villages,
Gaza with her towns and her villages, unto
the river of Egypt, and
the great sea, and
the border
thereof:
Ashdod, with its towns and villages;
Gaza, with its towns and villages, as far as
the Brook of Egypt and
the coastline of
the Great Sea.
And in the mountains, Shamir, and Jattir, and Socoh,
These were in the hill country:
And
Goshen, and Holon, and Giloh; eleven cities with
their villages:
Goshen, Holon, and Giloh—eleven cities, along with
their villages.
And Humtah, and Kirjath-arba, which is
Hebron, and Zior; nine cities with
their villages:
Humtah, Kiriath-arba (that is,
Hebron), and Zior—nine cities, along with
their villages.
Cain, Gibeah, and Timnah; ten cities with
their villages:
Kain, Gibeah, and Timnah—ten cities, along with
their villages.
And Maarath, and Beth-anoth, and Eltekon; six cities with their villages:
Maarath, Beth-anoth, and Eltekon—six cities, along with their villages.
Kirjath-
baal, which is Kirjath-jearim, and Rabbah; two cities with
their villages:
Kiriath-
baal (that is, Kiriath-jearim), and Rabbah—two cities, along with
their villages.
In the wilderness, Beth-arabah, Middin, and Secacah,
These were in the wilderness:
And Nibshan, and the city of Salt, and En-gedi; six cities with their villages.
Beth-arabah, Middin, Secacah, Nibshan, the City of Salt, and En-gedi—six cities, along with their villages.
As for the Jebusites the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out: but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem unto this day.
But the descendants of Judah could not drive out the Jebusites living in Jerusalem. So to this day the Jebusites live there among the descendants of Judah.
And
the lot of
the children of Joseph fell from Jordan by
Jericho, unto
the water of
Jericho on
the east, to
the wilderness that goeth up from
Jericho throughout mount
Bethel,
The allotment for
the descendants of Joseph extended from
the Jordan at
Jericho to
the waters of
Jericho on
the east, through
the wilderness that goes up from
Jericho into
the hill country of
Bethel.
And goeth out from
Bethel to
Luz, and passeth along unto
the borders of Archi to Ataroth,
It went on from
Bethel (that is,
Luz) and proceeded to
the border of
the Archites in Ataroth.
And goeth down westward to
the coast of Japhleti, unto
the coast of Beth-horon
the nether, and to
Gezer: and
the goings out
thereof are at
the sea.
Then it descended westward to
the border of
the Japhletites as far as
the border of Lower Beth-horon and on to
Gezer, and it ended at
the Sea.
So
the children of Joseph,
Manasseh and Ephraim, took
their inheritance.
So Ephraim and
Manasseh,
the sons of Joseph, received
their inheritance.
And the border of the children of Ephraim according to their families was thus: even the border of their inheritance on the east side was Ataroth-addar, unto Beth-horon the upper;
This was the territory of the descendants of Ephraim by their clans: The border of their inheritance went from Ataroth-addar in the east to Upper Beth-horon
And
the border went out toward
the sea to Michmethah on
the north side; and
the border went about eastward unto Taanath-
shiloh, and passed by it on
the east to Janohah;
and out toward
the Sea. From Michmethath on
the north it turned eastward toward Taanath-
shiloh and passed by it to Janoah on
the east.
And it went down from Janohah to Ataroth, and to Naarath, and came to
Jericho, and went out at Jordan.
From Janoah it went down to Ataroth and Naarah, and
then reached
Jericho and came out at
the Jordan.
The border went out from Tappuah westward unto the river Kanah; and the goings out thereof were at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Ephraim by their families.
From Tappuah
the border went westward to
the Brook of Kanah and ended at
the Sea. This was
the inheritance of
the clans of
the tribe of Ephraim,
And
the separate cities for
the children of Ephraim were among
the inheritance of
the children of
Manasseh, all
the cities with
their villages.
along with all
the cities and villages set apart for
the descendants of Ephraim within
the inheritance of
Manasseh.
