And they went up, and pitched in Kirjath-jearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahaneh-
dan unto
this day: behold, it is behind Kirjath-jearim.
They went up and camped at Kiriath-jearim in Judah. That is why the place west of Kiriath-jearim is called Mahaneh-
dan to
this day.
And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?
He replied, “You took the gods I had made, and my priest, and went away. What else do I have? How can you say to me, ‘What is the matter with you?’”
And when they were by
Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into
this city of the Jebusites, and
lodge in it.
When they were near
Jebus and the day was almost gone, the servant said to his master, “Please, let us stop at
this Jebusite city and
spend the night here.”
And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them,
Nay, my brethren,
nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that
this man is come into mine house, do not
this folly.
The owner of the house went out and said to them, “No, my brothers, do not do
this wicked thing! After all,
this man is a
guest in my house. Do not commit
this outrage.
Behold, here is my daughter a
maiden, and his
concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto
this man do not so
vile a thing.
Look, let me bring out my virgin daughter and the man’s
concubine, and you can use them and do with them as you wish. But do not do such a
vile thing to
this man.”
And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.
And
everyone who saw it said, “Nothing like
this has been seen or done from the day the Israelites came out of the land of Egypt until
this day. Think it over, take counsel, and speak up!”
(Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh.) Then said the children of Israel, Tell us, how was this wickedness?
(Meanwhile the Benjamites heard that the Israelites had gone up to
Mizpah.) And the Israelites asked, “Tell us, how did
this wicked thing happen?”
But now this shall be the thing which we will do to Gibeah; we will go up by lot against it;
Now this is what we will do to Gibeah: We will go against it as the lot dictates.
And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is done among you?
And the tribes of Israel sent men throughout the tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What is this wickedness that has occurred among you?
Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of
Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not
hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel:
Hand over the wicked men of Gibeah so we can put them to death and
purge Israel of
this evil.” But the Benjamites refused to
heed the voice of their fellow Israelites.
Among all
this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could
sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss.
Among all these soldiers there were 700 select left-handers, each of whom could
sling a stone at a hair without missing.
And said, O LORD God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Israel?
“Why, O LORD God of Israel,” they
cried out, “has
this happened in Israel?
Today in Israel one tribe is missing!”
And the children of Israel
repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel
this day.
And the Israelites
grieved for their brothers, the Benjamites, and said, “
Today a tribe is cut off from Israel.
And
this is the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath
lain by man.
This is what you are to do:
Devote to destruction every male, as well as every female who has had relations with a man.”
And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to
complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at
this time, that ye should be guilty.
When their fathers or brothers come to us to
complain, we will tell them, ‘Do us a favor by helping them, since we did not get wives for each of them in the war. Since you did not actually give them your daughters, you have no guilt.’”
So they two went until they came to
Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to
Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, Is
this Naomi?
Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers, Whose
damsel is
this?
And Boaz asked the
foreman of his harvesters, “Whose young woman is
this?”
Then said Boaz unto
Ruth, Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to
glean in another field, neither go from hence, but
abide here fast by my maidens:
Then Boaz said to
Ruth, “
Listen, my daughter. Do not go and
glean in another field, and do not go away from
this place, but stay here close to my servant girls.
Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger?
At this, she fell on her face, bowing low to the ground, and said to him, “Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you should take notice of me, even though I am a foreigner?”
Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a
kinsman, well; let him do the
kinsman’s part: but if he will not do the part of a
kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a
kinsman to thee, as the LORD liveth: lie down until the morning.
Stay here
tonight, and in the morning, if he wants to
redeem you, good. Let him
redeem you. But if he does not want to
redeem you, as surely as the LORD lives, I will. Now lie here until morning.”
Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.
“Wait, my daughter,” said
Naomi, “until you find out how things go, for he will not rest unless he has resolved the matter
today.”
Now
this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning
redeeming and concerning changing, for to
confirm all things; a man
plucked off his
shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and
this was a testimony in Israel.
Now in former times in Israel, concerning the
redemption or exchange of property, to make any matter legally binding a man would remove his
sandal and give it to the other party, and
this was a
confirmation in Israel.
And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses
this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, of the hand of
Naomi.
At
this, Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses
today that I am
buying from
Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech, Chilion, and Mahlon.
Moreover
Ruth the
Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses
this day.
Moreover, I have acquired
Ruth the
Moabitess, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, to raise up the name of the deceased through his inheritance, so that his name will not disappear from among his brothers or from the gate of his home. You are witnesses
today.”
And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman.
And may your house become like the house of
Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, because of the offspring the LORD will give you by
this young woman.”
And the women said unto
Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which hath not left thee
this day without a
kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel.
Then the women said to
Naomi, “Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you
this day without a
kinsman-
redeemer. May his name become famous in Israel.
And
this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in
Shiloh. And the two sons of
Eli,
Hophni and
Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.
Year after year Elkanah would go up from his city to worship and sacrifice to the LORD of Hosts at
Shiloh, where
Eli’s two sons,
Hophni and
Phinehas, were priests to the LORD.
And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she
provoked her; therefore she
wept, and did not eat.
And
this went on year after year. Whenever
Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival
taunted her until she
wept and would not eat.
Count not thine
handmaid for a daughter of
Belial: for out of the abundance of my
complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.
Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; for all
this time I have been praying out of the depth of my
anguish and grief.”
For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:
I prayed for this boy, and since the LORD has granted me what I asked of Him,
And he struck it into the pan, or
kettle, or
caldron, or pot; all that the
fleshhook brought up the priest took for himself. So they did in
Shiloh unto all the Israelites that came thither.
and
plunge it into the pan or
kettle or cauldron or
cooking pot. And the priest would claim for himself whatever the meat
fork brought up.
This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to
Shiloh.
And
Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, The LORD give thee seed of
this woman for the
loan which is lent to the LORD. And they went unto their own home.
And
Eli would
bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, “May the LORD give you children by
this woman in place of the one she dedicated to the LORD.” Then they would go home.
And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.
“Why are you doing these things?”
Eli said to his sons. “I hear about your wicked deeds from all these people.
And there came a man of God unto
Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house?
Then a man of God came to
Eli and told him, “
This is what the LORD says: ‘Did I not clearly
reveal Myself to your father’s house when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh’s house?
And
this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on
Hophni and
Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them.
And
this sign shall come to you concerning your two sons
Hophni and
Phinehas: They will both die on the same day.
And when the Philistines heard the noise of the
shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of
this great
shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.
On hearing the noise of the
shout, the Philistines asked, “What is
this loud
shouting in the camp of the Hebrews?” And when they realized that the ark of the LORD had entered the camp,
And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said,
Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing
heretofore.
the Philistines were afraid. “The gods have entered their camp!” they said. “
Woe to us, for nothing like
this has happened before.
And when
Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of
this tumult? And the man came in
hastily, and told
Eli.
And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Beth-shemesh, then he hath done us
this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that
smote us; it was a chance that happened to us.
but keep watching it. If it goes up the road to its homeland, toward Beth-shemesh, it is the LORD who has brought on us
this great
disaster. But if it does not, then we will know that it was not His hand that punished us and that it happened by chance.”
And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to
Ekron the same day.
And when the five rulers of the Philistines saw
this, they returned to
Ekron that same day.
And the golden
mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of
fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of
Abel,
whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: which stone remaineth unto
this day in the field of Joshua, the Beth-
shemite.
The number of gold rats also corresponded to the number of
Philistine cities belonging to the five rulers—the fortified cities and their outlying villages. And the large rock on which they placed the ark of the LORD stands to
this day in the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh.
And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? and to whom shall he go up from us?
The men of Beth-shemesh asked, “Who can stand in the presence of the LORD, this holy God? To whom should the ark go up from here?”
And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.
When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had gathered at
Mizpah, their rulers marched up toward Israel. And when the Israelites learned of
this, they feared the Philistines
According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto
this day,
wherewith they have
forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
Just as they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until
this day,
forsaking Me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.
And he said,
This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and
appoint them for himself, for his
chariots, and to be his
horsemen; and some shall run before his
chariots.
He said, “
This will be the manner of the king who will reign over you: He will take your sons and
appoint them to his own
chariots and horses, to run in front of his
chariots.
And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in
this city a man of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither;
peradventure he can
shew us our way that we should go.
“Look,” said the servant, “in this city there is a man of God who is highly respected; everything he says surely comes to pass. Let us go there now. Perhaps he will tell us which way to go.”
As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall
straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he come, because he
doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be
bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about
this time ye shall find him.
As soon as you enter the city, you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. The people will not eat until he comes, because he must
bless the sacrifice; after that, the guests will eat. Go up at once; you will find him.”
To
morrow about
this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt
anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.
“At
this time
tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you are to
anoint him leader over My people Israel; he will save them from the hand of the Philistines. For I have looked upon My people, because their cry has come to Me.”
And when Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said unto him, Behold the man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people.
When Samuel saw Saul, the LORD told him, “Here is the man of whom I spoke; he shall rule over My people.”
And the
cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat: for unto
this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.
So the
cook picked up the leg and what was attached to it and set it before Saul. Then Samuel said, “Here is what was kept back. It was set apart for you. Eat, for it has been kept for you for
this occasion, from the time I said, ‘I have invited the people.’” So Saul
dined with Samuel that day.
And it came to pass, when all that knew him
beforetime saw that, behold, he
prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is
this that is come unto the son of
Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?
All those who had formerly known Saul and saw him
prophesying with the prophets asked one another, “What has happened to the son of
Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”
And Samuel called the people together unto the LORD to Mizpeh;
After
this, Samuel summoned the people to the LORD at
Mizpah And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that
oppressed you:
and said to the Israelites, “
This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I
rescued you from the hands of the Egyptians and of all the kingdoms that
oppressed you.’
And ye have
this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your
adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him,
Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present
yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands.
But
today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your troubles and afflictions, and you have said to Him, ‘No, set a king over us.’ Now therefore present
yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and clans.”
But the children of
Belial said, How shall
this man save us? And they
despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.
But some worthless men said, “How can
this man save us?” So they
despised him and brought him no gifts; but Saul remained silent about it.
And Nahash the
Ammonite answered them, On
this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.
But Nahash the
Ammonite replied, “I will make a treaty with you on one condition, that I may put out
everyone’s right eye and bring reproach upon all Israel.”
And he took a yoke of oxen, and
hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying,
Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.
He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent them by messengers throughout the land of Israel,
proclaiming, “
This is what will be done to the oxen of
anyone who does not march behind Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the LORD fell upon the people, and they turned out as one man.
And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of
Jabesh-
gilead, To
morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of
Jabesh; and they were
glad.
And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel.
But Saul ordered, “No one shall be put to death
this day, for
today the LORD has worked salvation in Israel.”
And now, behold, the king walketh before you: and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my
childhood unto
this day.
Now here is the king walking before you, and I am old and gray, and my sons are here with you. I have walked before you from my youth until this day.
And he said unto them, The LORD is witness against you, and his
anointed is witness
this day, that ye have not found ought in my hand. And they answered, He is witness.
Samuel said to them, “The LORD is a witness against you, and His
anointed is a witness
today, that you have not found anything in my hand.” “He is a witness,” they replied.
When Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers
cried unto the LORD, then the LORD sent Moses and Aaron, which brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and made them dwell in
this place.
When Jacob went to Egypt, your fathers
cried out to the LORD, and He sent them Moses and Aaron, who brought your fathers out of Egypt and settled them in
this place.
Now therefore stand and see this great thing, which the LORD will do before your eyes.
Now, therefore, stand and see this great thing that the LORD will do before your eyes.
And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the LORD thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.
They
pleaded with Samuel, “Pray to the LORD your God for your servants so that we will not die! For we have added to all our sins the evil of asking for a king.”
And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart;
“Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “Even though you have committed all this evil, do not turn aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart.
But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the LORD hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us.
But if they say, ‘Come on up,’ then we will go up, because this will be our sign that the LORD has delivered them into our hands.”
Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying,
Cursed be the man that eateth any food
this day. And the people were
faint.
Then one of the soldiers told him, “Your father bound the troops with a solemn oath, saying, ‘
Cursed is the man who eats food
today.’ That is why the people are
faint.”
Then said
Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been
enlightened, because I tasted a little of
this honey.
“My father has brought trouble to the land,”
Jonathan replied. “Just look at how my eyes have
brightened because I tasted a little of
this honey.
Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have
transgressed: roll a great stone unto me
this day.
Then someone reported to Saul: “Look, the troops are
sinning against the LORD by eating meat with the blood still in it.” “You have broken faith,” said Saul. “Roll a large stone over here at once.”
And Saul said,
Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me
hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and
slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and
slew them there.
Then he said, “Go among the troops and tell them, ‘Each man must bring me his ox or his sheep, slaughter them in
this place, and then eat. Do not sin against the LORD by eating meat with the blood still in it.’” So that night
everyone brought his ox and slaughtered it there.
And Saul said, Draw ye near
hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein
this sin hath been
this day.
Therefore Saul said, “Come here, all you leaders of the troops, and let us
investigate how
this sin has occurred
today.
Therefore Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and
Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.
So Saul said to the LORD, the God of Israel, “Why have You not answered Your servant
this day? If the fault is with me or my son
Jonathan,
respond with
Urim; but if the fault is with the men of Israel,
respond with
Thummim.” And
Jonathan and Saul were selected, but the people were cleared of the charge.
And the people said unto Saul, Shall
Jonathan die, who hath wrought
this great salvation in Israel? God
forbid: as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God
this day. So the people
rescued Jonathan, that he died not.
But the people said to Saul, “Must
Jonathan die—he who accomplished such a great
deliverance for Israel? Never! As surely as the LORD lives, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, for with God’s help he has accomplished
this today.” So the people
rescued Jonathan, and he did not die.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘I witnessed what the
Amalekites did to the Israelites when they
ambushed them on their way up from Egypt.
And Samuel said, What meaneth then
this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?
But Samuel replied, “Then what is
this bleating of sheep and lowing of cattle that I hear?”
Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.
“Stop!”
exclaimed Samuel. “Let me tell you what the LORD said to me last night.” “Tell me,” Saul replied.
And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou.
So Samuel said to him, “The LORD has
torn the kingdom of Israel from you
today and has given it to your
neighbor who is better than you.
Then
Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen
this.
Then
Jesse called Abinadab and presented him to Samuel, who said, “The LORD has not chosen
this one either.”
Then
Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen
this.
Next
Jesse presented Shammah, but Samuel said, “The LORD has not chosen
this one either.”
And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was
ruddy, and
withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise,
anoint him: for
this is he.
So
Jesse sent for his youngest son and brought him in. He was
ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. And the LORD said, “Rise and
anoint him, for he is the one.”
And the
Philistine said, I
defy the armies of Israel
this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.
Then the
Philistine said, “I
defy the ranks of Israel
this day! Give me a man to fight!”
And
Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an
ephah of
this parched corn, and these ten
loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;
One day
Jesse said to his son David, “Take
this ephah of
roasted grain and these ten
loaves of bread for your brothers and
hurry to their camp.
And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen
this man that is come up? surely to
defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will
enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s house free in Israel.
Now the men of Israel had been saying, “Do you see
this man who keeps coming out to
defy Israel? To the man who kills him the king will give great riches. And he will give him his daughter in marriage and
exempt his father’s house from taxation in Israel.”
And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth
this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is
this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should
defy the armies of the living God?
David asked the men who were standing with him, “What will be done for the man who kills
this Philistine and removes
this disgrace from Israel? Just who is
this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should
defy the armies of the living God?”
And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.
The people told him about the offer, saying, “That is what will be done for the man who kills him.”
And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with
this Philistine.
And David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail on account of
this Philistine. Your servant will go and fight him!”
And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against
this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
But Saul replied, “You cannot go out against
this Philistine to fight him. You are just a boy, and he has been a
warrior from his youth.”
Your servant has killed lions and bears;
this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, for he has
defied the armies of the living God.”
David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the
paw of the lion, and out of the
paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of
this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.
David added, “The LORD, who delivered me from the claws of the lion and the bear, will deliver me from the hand of
this Philistine.” “Go,” said Saul, “and may the LORD be with you.”
This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will
smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines
this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand.
This day I will strike you down, cut off your head, and give the
carcasses of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the creatures of the earth. Then the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.
And all
this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and
spear: for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give you into our hands.
And all those assembled here will know that it is not by sword or
spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and He will give all of you into our hands.”
And when Saul saw David go forth against the
Philistine, he said unto
Abner, the captain of the host,
Abner, whose son is
this youth? And
Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.
As Saul had watched David going out to
confront the
Philistine, he said to
Abner the commander of the army, “
Abner, whose son is
this young man?” “As surely as you live, O king,”
Abner replied, “I do not know.”
“Find out whose son this young man is!” said the king.
And David went out
whithersoever Saul sent him, and
behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.
So David marched out and
prospered in everything Saul sent him to do, and Saul set him over the men of war. And
this was pleasing in the sight of all the people, and of Saul’s officers as well.
And Saul was very
wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?
And Saul was
furious and resented
this song. “They have ascribed tens of thousands to David,” he said, “but only thousands to me. What more can he have but the kingdom?”
And Michal Saul’s daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.
Now Saul’s daughter Michal loved David, and when this was reported to Saul, it pleased him.
And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a
snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt
this day be my son in law in the one of the
twain.
“I will give her to David,” Saul thought, “so that she may be a
snare to him, and the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” So Saul said to David, “For a second time now you can be my son-in-law.”
And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spake David.
And the servants told Saul what David had said.
And Saul said unto Michal, Why hast thou
deceived me so, and sent away mine enemy, that he is escaped? And Michal answered Saul, He said unto me, Let me go; why should I kill thee?
And Saul said to Michal, “Why did you
deceive me like
this? You sent my enemy away and he has escaped!” Michal replied, “He said to me, ‘Help me get away, or I will kill you!’”
