But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their
graven images with fire.
Instead,
this is what you are to do to them:
tear down their altars,
smash their sacred pillars, cut down their Asherah poles, and burn their idols in the fire.
Thou shalt therefore keep the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which I command thee this day, to do them.
So keep the commandments and statutes and ordinances that I am giving you to follow this day.
All the commandments which I command thee
this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD
sware unto your fathers.
You must carefully follow every commandment I am giving you
today, so that you may live and multiply, and enter and possess the land that the LORD
swore to give your fathers.
Beware that thou
forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee
this day:
Be careful not to
forget the LORD your God by failing to keep His commandments and ordinances and statutes, which I am giving you
this day.
And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath
gotten me
this wealth.
You might say in your heart, “The power and strength of my hands have made this wealth for me.”
But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he
sware unto thy fathers, as it is
this day.
But remember that it is the LORD your God who gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to
confirm His covenant that He
swore to your fathers even to
this day.
And it shall be, if thou do at all
forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I
testify against you
this day that ye shall surely perish.
If you ever
forget the LORD your God and go after other gods to worship and bow down to them, I
testify against you
today that you will surely perish.
Hear, O Israel: Thou art to pass over Jordan
this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than
thyself, cities great and
fenced up to heaven,
Hear, O Israel:
Today you are about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities fortified to the heavens.
Understand therefore
this day, that the LORD thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a
consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the LORD hath said unto thee.
But understand that
today the LORD your God goes across
ahead of you as a
consuming fire; He will destroy them and
subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and
annihilate them swiftly, as the LORD has promised you.
Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the LORD thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the LORD hath brought me in to possess
this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD
doth drive them out from before thee.
When the LORD your God has driven them out before you, do not say in your heart, “Because of my righteousness the LORD has brought me in to possess this land.” Rather, the LORD is driving out these nations before you because of their wickedness.
Understand therefore, that the LORD thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.
Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the LORD your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.
Remember, and
forget not, how thou provokedst the LORD thy God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that thou
didst depart out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto
this place, ye have been
rebellious against the LORD.
Remember
this, and never
forget how you
provoked the LORD your God in the wilderness. From the day you left the land of Egypt until you reached
this place, you have been rebelling against the LORD.
Furthermore the LORD spake unto me, saying, I have seen
this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
The LORD also said to me, “I have seen this people, and they are indeed a stiff-necked people.
For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure,
wherewith the LORD was
wroth against you to destroy you. But the LORD
hearkened unto me at that time also.
For I was afraid of the anger and wrath that the LORD had directed against you, enough to destroy you. But the LORD
listened to me
this time as well.
Remember thy servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not unto the
stubbornness of
this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin:
Remember Your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Overlook the
stubbornness of
this people and the wickedness of their sin.
At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to minister unto him, and to
bless in his name, unto
this day.
At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to serve Him, and to
pronounce blessings in His name, as they do to
this day.
To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?
and to keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD that I am giving you this day for your own good?
Only the LORD had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day.
Yet the LORD has set His affection on your fathers and loved them. And He has chosen you, their descendants after them, above all the peoples, even to this day.
And know ye
this day: for I speak not with your children which have not known, and which have not seen the
chastisement of the LORD your God, his greatness, his mighty hand, and his stretched out arm,
Know this day that it is not your children who have known and seen the discipline of the LORD your God: His greatness, His mighty hand, and His outstretched arm;
And what he did unto the army of Egypt, unto their horses, and to their
chariots; how he made the water of the Red sea to overflow them as they pursued after you, and how the LORD hath destroyed them unto
this day;
what He did to the Egyptian army and horses and
chariots when He made the waters of the Red Sea
engulf them as they pursued you, and how He destroyed them completely, even to
this day;
And what he did unto you in the wilderness, until ye came into this place;
what He did for you in the wilderness until you reached this place;
Therefore shall ye keep all the commandments which I command you
this day, that ye may be strong, and go in and possess the land,
whither ye go to possess it;
You shall therefore keep every commandment I am giving you
today, so that you may have the strength to go in and possess the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess,
And it shall come to pass, if ye shall
hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you
this day, to love the LORD your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,
So if you carefully obey the commandments I am giving you
today, to love the LORD your God and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul,
Behold, I set before you
this day a blessing and a
curse;
See,
today I am setting before you a blessing and a
curse—
A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you this day:
a blessing if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I am giving you
today,
And a
curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you
this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known.
but a
curse if you disobey the commandments of the LORD your God and turn aside from the path I command you
today by following other gods, which you have not known.
And ye shall observe to do all the statutes and judgments which I set before you this day.
be careful to follow all the statutes and ordinances that I am setting before you
today.
Ye shall not do so unto the LORD your God.
You shall not worship the LORD your God in this way.
Ye shall not do after all the things that we do here
this day, every man
whatsoever is right in his own eyes.
You are not to do as we are doing here
today, where
everyone does what seems right in his own eyes.
Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God: for every
abomination to the LORD, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.
You must not worship the LORD your God in
this way, because they practice for their gods every
abomination which the LORD hates. They even burn their sons and daughters in the fire as sacrifices to their gods.
And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you.
Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and will never again do such a wicked thing among you.
Then shalt thou
enquire, and make search, and ask
diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such
abomination is wrought among you;
When thou shalt
hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep all his commandments which I command thee
this day, to do that which is right in the eyes of the LORD thy God.
because you obey the LORD your God, keeping all His commandments I am giving you
today and doing what is right in the eyes of the LORD your God.
And
this is the manner of the release: Every
creditor that lendeth ought unto his neighbour shall release it; he shall not exact it of his neighbour, or of his brother; because it is called the LORD’S release.
This is the manner of remission: Every
creditor shall
cancel what he has
loaned to his
neighbor. He is not to collect anything from his
neighbor or brother, because the LORD’s time of release has been proclaimed.
Only if thou carefully
hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all these commandments which I command thee
this day.
if only you obey the LORD your God and are careful to follow all these commandments I am giving you
today.
Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him
nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin unto thee.
Be careful not to
harbor this wicked thought in your heart: “The seventh year, the year of release, is near,” so that you look upon your poor brother begrudgingly and give him nothing. He will cry out to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin.
Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be
grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for
this thing the LORD thy God shall
bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto.
Give generously to him, and do not let your heart be
grieved when you do so. And because of
this the LORD your God will
bless you in all your work and in everything to which you put your hand.
And thou shalt remember that thou
wast a
bondman in the land of Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee: therefore I command thee
this thing to day.
Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you; that is why I am giving you
this command
today.
But at the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to place his name in, there thou shalt sacrifice the
passover at even, at the going down of the sun, at the season that thou camest forth out of Egypt.
You must only offer the
Passover sacrifice at the place the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for His Name. Do
this in the evening as the sun sets, at the same time you departed from Egypt.
Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, which have committed that wicked thing, unto thy gates, even that man or that woman, and shalt stone them with stones, till they die.
you must bring out to your gates the man or woman who has done this evil thing, and you must stone that person to death.
And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites:
When he is seated on his royal throne, he must write for himself a copy of
this instruction on a
scroll in the presence of the
Levitical priests.
And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them:
It is to remain with him, and he is to read from it all the days of his life, so that he may learn to fear the LORD his God by carefully observing all the words of this instruction and these statutes.
And
this shall be the priest’s due from the people, from them that offer a sacrifice, whether it be ox or sheep; and they shall give unto the priest the shoulder, and the two cheeks, and the
maw.
This shall be the priests’ share from the people who offer a sacrifice, whether a bull or a sheep: the priests are to be given the shoulder, the jowls, and the stomach.
According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in
Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see
this great fire any more, that I die not.
This is what you asked of the LORD your God at
Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the LORD our God or see
this great fire anymore, so that we will not die!”
And
this is the case of the
slayer, which shall
flee thither, that he may live:
Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he
hated not in time past;
Now
this is the situation regarding the
manslayer who flees to one of these cities to save his life, having killed his
neighbor accidentally, without intending to
harm him:
Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.
This is why I am commanding you to set apart for
yourselves three cities.
If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three:
and if you carefully keep all these commandments I am giving you
today, loving the LORD your God and walking in His ways at all times, then you are to add three more cities to these three.
And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach
this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts
faint, fear not, and do not
tremble, neither be ye
terrified because of them;
saying to them, “Hear, O Israel,
today you are going into battle with your enemies. Do not be
fainthearted or afraid; do not be
alarmed or
terrified because of them.
Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.
This is how you are to treat all the cities that are far away from you and do not belong to the nations nearby.
And they shall answer and say, Our hands have not shed this blood, neither have our eyes seen it.
and they shall declare, “Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it.
Be
merciful, O LORD, unto thy people Israel, whom thou hast redeemed, and lay not innocent blood unto thy people of Israel’s charge. And the blood shall be
forgiven them.
Accept
this atonement, O LORD, for Your people Israel whom You have redeemed, and do not hold the
shedding of innocent blood against them.” And the
bloodshed will be
atoned for.
And give occasions of speech against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say, I took
this woman, and when I came to her, I found her not a
maid:
and he then accuses her of shameful conduct and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman and had relations with her, but I discovered she was not a virgin.”
And the
damsel’s father shall say unto the elders, I gave my daughter unto
this man to wife, and he hateth her;
and say to the elders, “I gave my daughter in marriage to
this man, but he has come to
hate her.
And they shall
amerce him in an hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the father of the
damsel, because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days.
They are also to fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, because
this man has given a virgin of Israel a bad name. And she shall remain his wife; he must not
divorce her as long as he lives.
If, however,
this accusation is true, and no proof of the young woman’s
virginity can be found,
But if a man find a
betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her shall die:
But if the man encounters a
betrothed woman in the open country, and he overpowers her and lies with her, only the man who has done
this must die.
But unto the
damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the
damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is
this matter:
Do nothing to the young woman, because she has committed no sin worthy of death.
This case is just like one in which a man attacks his
neighbor and murders him.
In any case thou shalt deliver him the
pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own
raiment, and
bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the LORD thy God.
be sure to return it to him by
sunset, so that he may sleep in his own
cloak and
bless you, and
this will be credited to you as righteousness before the LORD your God.
But thou shalt remember that thou
wast a
bondman in Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee thence: therefore I command thee to do
this thing.
Remember that you were slaves in Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you from that place. Therefore I am commanding you to do this.
And thou shalt remember that thou
wast a
bondman in the land of Egypt: therefore I command thee to do
this thing.
Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt. Therefore I am commanding you to do this.
Then shall his brother’s wife come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his
shoe from off his foot, and
spit in his face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother’s house.
his brother’s widow shall go up to him in the presence of the elders, remove his
sandal,
spit in his face, and declare, “
This is what is done to the man who will not maintain his brother’s line.”
And thou shalt go unto the priest that shall be in those days, and say unto him, I
profess this day unto the LORD thy God, that I am come unto the country which the LORD
sware unto our fathers for to give us.
to the priest who is serving at that time, and say to him, “I declare
today to the LORD your God that I have entered the land that the LORD
swore to our fathers to give us.”
And he hath brought us into this place, and hath given us this land, even a land that floweth with milk and honey.
And He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey.
This day the LORD thy God hath commanded thee to do these statutes and judgments: thou shalt therefore keep and do them with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.
The LORD your God commands you this day to follow these statutes and ordinances. You must be careful to follow them with all your heart and with all your soul.
Thou hast
avouched the LORD
this day to be thy God, and to walk in his ways, and to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and to
hearken unto his voice:
Today you have proclaimed that the LORD is your God and that you will walk in His ways, keep His statutes and commandments and ordinances, and
listen to His voice.
And the LORD hath
avouched thee
this day to be his peculiar people, as he hath promised thee, and that thou shouldest keep all his commandments;
And
today the LORD has proclaimed that you are His people and
treasured possession as He promised, that you are to keep all His commandments,
And Moses with the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, Keep all the commandments which I command you this day.
Then Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people: “Keep all the commandments I am giving you
today.
And thou shalt write upon them all the words of this law, when thou art passed over, that thou mayest go in unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, a land that floweth with milk and honey; as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee.
Write on them all the words of this law when you have crossed over to enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you.
Therefore it shall be when ye be gone over Jordan, that ye shall set up these stones, which I command you
this day, in mount
Ebal, and thou shalt
plaister them with
plaister.
And when you have crossed the Jordan, you are to set up these stones on Mount
Ebal, as I am commanding you
today, and you are to coat them with
plaster.
And thou shalt write upon the stones all the words of this law very plainly.
And you shall write distinctly upon these stones all the words of this law.”
And Moses and the priests the Levites spake unto all Israel, saying, Take
heed, and
hearken, O Israel;
this day thou art become the people of the LORD thy God.
Then Moses and the
Levitical priests spoke to all Israel: “Be silent, O Israel, and
listen!
This day you have become the people of the LORD your God.
Thou shalt therefore obey the voice of the LORD thy God, and do his commandments and his statutes, which I command thee this day.
You shall therefore obey the voice of the LORD your God and follow His commandments and statutes I am giving you
today.”
Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of
this law to do them. And all the people shall say,
Amen.
‘
Cursed is he who does not put the words of
this law into practice.’ And let all the people say, ‘
Amen!’
And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt
hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee
this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth:
“Now if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God and are careful to follow all His commandments I am giving you
today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.
And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou
hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee
this day, to observe and to do them:
The LORD will make you the head and not the tail; you will only move upward and never
downward, if you hear and carefully follow the commandments of the LORD your God, which I am giving you
today.
And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.
Do not turn aside to the right or to the left from any of the words I command you
today, and do not go after other gods to serve them.
But it shall come to pass, if thou
wilt not
hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee
this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:
If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God by carefully following all His commandments and statutes I am giving you
today, all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:
If thou
wilt not observe to do all the words of
this law that are written in
this book, that thou mayest fear
this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD;
If you are not careful to observe all the words of
this law which are written in
this book, that you may fear
this glorious and
awesome name—the LORD your God—
Also every sickness, and every plague, which is not written in the book of this law, them will the LORD bring upon thee, until thou be destroyed.
The LORD will also bring upon you every sickness and plague not recorded in this Book of the Law, until you are destroyed.
Yet the LORD hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day.
Yet to this day the LORD has not given you a mind to understand, eyes to see, or ears to hear.
And when ye came unto
this place, Sihon the king of
Heshbon, and
Og the king of
Bashan, came out against us unto battle, and we
smote them:
When you reached
this place, Sihon king of
Heshbon and
Og king of
Bashan came out against us in battle, but we defeated them.
Keep therefore the words of
this covenant, and do them, that ye may
prosper in all that ye do.
So keep and follow the words of
this covenant, that you may
prosper in all you do.
Ye stand this day all of you before the LORD your God; your captains of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, with all the men of Israel,
All of you are standing
today before the LORD your God—you leaders of tribes, elders, officials, and all the men of Israel,
That thou shouldest enter into covenant with the LORD thy God, and into his oath, which the LORD thy God maketh with thee this day:
so that you may enter into the covenant of the LORD your God, which He is making with you
today, and into His oath,
Neither with you only do I make this covenant and this oath;
I am making this covenant and this oath not only with you,
But with him that standeth here with us this day before the LORD our God, and also with him that is not here with us this day:
but also with those who are standing here with us
today in the presence of the LORD our God, as well as with those who are not here
today.
Lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away
this day from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations; lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and
wormwood;
Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you
today whose heart turns away from the LORD our God to go and worship the gods of those nations. Make sure there is no root among you that bears such poisonous and bitter fruit,
And it come to pass, when he heareth the words of
this curse, that he
bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of mine heart, to add
drunkenness to
thirst:
because when such a person hears the words of
this oath, he invokes a blessing on himself, saying, ‘I will have peace, even though I walk in the
stubbornness of my own heart.’
This will bring
disaster on the watered land as well as the dry.
The LORD will not
spare him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in
this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall
blot out his name from under heaven.
The LORD will never be willing to
forgive him. Instead, His anger and jealousy will burn against that man, and every
curse written in
this book will fall upon him. The LORD will
blot out his name from under heaven
And the LORD shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this book of the law:
and single him out from all the tribes of Israel for
disaster, according to all the curses of the covenant written in
this Book of the Law.
Even all nations shall say, Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this land? what meaneth the heat of this great anger?
So all the nations will ask, ‘Why has the LORD done such a thing to
this land? Why
this great
outburst of anger?’
And the anger of the LORD was
kindled against
this land, to bring upon it all the curses that are written in
this book:
Therefore the anger of the LORD burned against
this land, and He brought upon it every
curse written in
this book.
And the LORD rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great
indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is
this day.
The LORD uprooted them from their land in His anger,
rage, and great wrath, and He cast them into another land, where they are
today.’
The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.
The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children
forever, so that we may follow all the words of
this law.
And shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul;
and when you and your children return to the LORD your God and obey His voice with all your heart and all your soul according to everything I am giving you
today,
And thou shalt return and obey the voice of the LORD, and do all his commandments which I command thee this day.
And you will again obey the voice of the LORD and follow all His commandments I am giving you
today.
If thou shalt
hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in
this book of the law, and if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.
if you obey the LORD your God by keeping His commandments and statutes that are written in this Book of the Law, and if you turn to Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off.
For
this commandment I give you
today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.
See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil;
See, I have set before you
today life and goodness, as well as death and
disaster.
