And there was
trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also
trembled, and the earth
quaked: so it was a
very great
trembling.
Then terror struck the Philistines in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. Even those in the outposts and
raiding parties
trembled. Indeed, the earth
quaked and
panic spread from God.
And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man’s sword was against his fellow, and there was a
very great
discomfiture.
Then Saul and all his troops assembled and marched to the battle, and they found the Philistines in total confusion, with each man
wielding the sword against his
neighbor.
That day, after the Israelites had struck down the Philistines from
Michmash to
Aijalon, the people were
very faint.
And Saul was
very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?
And Saul was
furious and resented this song. “They have ascribed tens of thousands to David,” he said, “but only thousands to me. What more can he have but the kingdom?”
Wherefore when Saul saw that he
behaved himself
very wisely, he was afraid of him.

And
Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he hath not
sinned against thee, and because his works have been to thee-ward
very good:
Then
Jonathan spoke well of David to his father Saul and said to him, “The king should not sin against his servant David; he has not
sinned against you. In fact, his actions have been highly
beneficial to you.
And David
sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not
Jonathan know this, lest he be
grieved: but truly as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.
But David again
vowed, “Your father knows
very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, ‘
Jonathan must not know of this, or he will be
grieved.’ As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, there is but a step between me and death.”
If he say thus, It is well; thy servant shall have peace: but if he be
very wroth, then be sure that evil is determined by him.
If he says, ‘Good,’ then your servant is safe, but if he is
enraged, you will know he has evil intentions.

Go, I pray you, prepare yet, and know and see his place where his
haunt is, and who hath seen him there: for it is told me that he dealeth
very subtilly.
Please go and prepare further.
Investigate and watch carefully where he goes and who has seen him there, for I am told that he is extremely
cunning.
And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in
Carmel; and the man was
very great, and he had three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep in
Carmel.
Now there was a man in Maon whose business was in
Carmel. He was a
very wealthy man with a thousand goats and three thousand sheep, which he was shearing in
Carmel.
But the men were
very good unto us, and we were not
hurt, neither missed we any thing, as long as we were
conversant with them, when we were in the fields:
Yet these men were
very good to us. When we were in the field, we were not
harassed, and nothing of ours went missing the whole time we lived among them.
For in
very deed, as the LORD God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back from
hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.
Otherwise, as surely as the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, who has restrained me from
harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, then surely no male belonging to Nabal would have been left alive by morning light.”
And
Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal’s heart was
merry within him, for he was

When
Abigail returned to Nabal, there he was in the house, holding a feast fit for a king, in high spirits and
very drunk. So she told him nothing until morning light.

spies, and understood that Saul was come in

bodyguard for life.”
And it was so from that day forward, that he made it a statute and an
ordinance for Israel unto this day.
And so it has been from that day forward. David established this statute as an
ordinance for Israel to this
very day.
I am distressed for thee, my brother
Jonathan:
very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.
I
grieve for you,
Jonathan, my brother. You were delightful to me; your love to me was extraordinary,
surpassing the love of women.
And there was a
very sore battle that day; and
Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.
The battle that day was intense, and
Abner and the men of Israel were defeated by the servants of David.
Then was
Abner very wroth for the words of
Ish-bosheth, and said, Am I a dog’s head, which against Judah do
shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman?
Abner was
furious over
Ish-bosheth’s
accusation. “Am I the head of a dog that belongs to Judah?” he asked. “All this time I have been
loyal to the house of your father Saul, to his brothers, and to his friends. I have not delivered you into the hand of David, but now you
accuse me of
wrongdoing with this woman!
For thou hast confirmed to
thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto thee for ever: and thou, LORD, art become their God.
For You have established Your people Israel as Your
very own
forever, and You, O LORD, have become their God.
And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
One evening David got up from his bed and
strolled around on the roof of the palace. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing—a
very beautiful woman.
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.
This is what the LORD says: ‘I will raise up
adversity against you from your own house. Before your
very eyes I will take your wives and give them to another, and he will lie with them in broad
daylight.
And
Nathan departed unto his house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah’s wife bare unto David, and it was
very sick.
After

But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother: and Jonadab was a
very subtil man.
Now Amnon had a friend named Jonadab, the son of David’s brother Shimeah. Jonadab was a
very shrewd man,
But when king David heard of all these things, he was
very wroth.
When King David heard all this, he was
furious.
And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of speaking, that, behold, the king’s sons came, and lifted up their voice and
wept: and the king also and all his servants
wept very sore.

wailing loudly. Then the king and all his servants also
wept very bitterly.
And they took
Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the wood, and laid a

mound of stones over him. Meanwhile, all the Israelites fled, each to his home.
Now Barzillai was a
very aged man, even
fourscore years old: and he had provided the king of

Mahanaim; for he was a
very great man.
Barzillai was quite old, eighty years of age, and since he was a
very wealthy man, he had provided for the king while he stayed in
Mahanaim.
And David’s heart
smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have
sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I
beseech thee, O LORD, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done
very foolishly.
After David had numbered the troops, his conscience was
stricken and he said to the LORD, “I have
sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, O LORD, I
beg You to take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have acted
very foolishly.”
And the
damsel was
very fair, and
cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.
The
girl was unsurpassed in beauty; she cared for the king and served him, but he had no relations with her.
And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a
very goodly man; and his mother bare him after
Absalom.
(His father had never once
reprimanded him by saying, “Why do you act this way?” Adonijah was also
very handsome, born next after
Absalom.)
And Bath-
sheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was
very old; and
Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king.

very old,
Abishag the Shunammite was serving him.
Even as I
sware unto thee by the LORD God of Israel, saying,
Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my
stead; even so will I certainly do this day.
I will carry out this
very day exactly what I
swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel: Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place.”
And Bath-
sheba said, Well; I will speak for thee unto the king.
“Very well,” Bathsheba replied. “I will speak to the king for you.”
And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.
Solomon replied, “You have shown much loving devotion to Your servant, my father David, because he walked before You in faithfulness, righteousness, and uprightness of heart. And You have maintained this loving devotion by giving him a son to sit on his throne this very day.
And there were four undersetters to the four corners of one base: and the undersetters were of the very base itself.
Each stand had four handles, one for each corner, projecting from the stand.
And she came to Jerusalem with a very great train, with camels that bare spices, and very much gold, and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart.
She arrived in Jerusalem with a
very large
caravan—with camels bearing spices, gold in great abundance, and precious stones. So she came to Solomon and spoke to him all that was on her mind.
And she gave the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices
very great store, and precious stones: there came no more such abundance of spices as these which the queen of
Sheba gave to king Solomon.
Then she gave the king 120 talents of gold, a great quantity of spices, and precious stones. Never again was such an abundance of spices brought in as those the queen of
Sheba gave to King Solomon.
And the people that were
encamped heard say, Zimri hath
conspired, and hath also slain the king: wherefore all Israel made Omri, the captain of the host, king over Israel that day in the camp.
and the people in the camp heard that Zimri had not only
conspired but had also struck down the king. So there in the camp that
very day, all Israel proclaimed Omri, the commander of the army, king over Israel.
And he said, I have been
very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have
forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
“I have been
very zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites have
forsaken Your covenant,
torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.”
And he said, I have been
very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have
forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
“I have been
very zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites have
forsaken Your covenant,
torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.”
And, behold, there came a prophet unto
Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thine hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.

Ahab king of Israel and declared, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Do you see this entire great army? Behold, I will deliver it into your hand this
very day, and you will know that I am the LORD.’”
And he did
very abominably in following idols, according to all things as did the
Amorites, whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.
He committed the most
detestable acts by going after idols, just like the
Amorites whom the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.)
And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king: but
Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy
bedchamber.
But one of his servants replied, “No one, my lord the king. For
Elisha, the prophet in Israel, tells the king of Israel the
very words you speak in your
bedroom.”
He
slew of
Edom in the valley of salt ten thousand, and took
Selah by war, and called the name of it Joktheel unto this day.
Amaziah struck down 10,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt. He took Sela in battle and called it Joktheel, which is its name to this
very day.
For the LORD saw the
affliction of Israel, that it was
very bitter: for there was not any shut up, nor any left, nor any helper for Israel.
For the LORD saw that the
affliction of the Israelites, both slave and free, was
very bitter. There was no one to help Israel,
Therefore the LORD was
very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only.
So the LORD was
very angry with Israel, and He removed them from His presence. Only the tribe of Judah remained,
And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and
smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred

And that very night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 men in the camp of the Assyrians. When the people got up the next morning, there were all the dead bodies!
Moreover
Manasseh shed innocent blood
very much, till he had filled Jerusalem from one end to another; beside his sin
wherewith he made Judah to sin, in doing that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.
Moreover,
Manasseh shed so much innocent blood that he filled Jerusalem from end to end, in addition to the sin that he had caused Judah to commit, doing evil in the sight of the LORD.
And their brethren, heads of the house of their fathers, a thousand and seven hundred and
threescore;
very able men for the work of the service of the house of God.
and 1,760 of their relatives, the heads of their families, able men for the work of the service of the house of God.
For thy people Israel
didst thou make thine own people for ever; and thou, LORD, becamest their God.
For You have made Your people Israel Your
very own
forever, and You, O LORD, have become their God.
Likewise from Tibhath, and from Chun, cities of Hadarezer, brought David
very much brass,
wherewith Solomon made the
brasen sea, and the pillars, and the vessels of brass.
And from Tibhath and
Cun, cities of Hadadezer, David took a large amount of bronze, with which Solomon made the bronze Sea, the pillars, and various bronze articles.
And David said unto God, I have
sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I
beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done
very foolishly.
Then David said to God, “I have
sinned greatly because I have done this thing. Now I
beg You to take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have acted
very foolishly.”
And David said unto
Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for
very great are his
mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.
David answered
Gad, “I am deeply distressed. Please, let me fall into the hand of the LORD, for His
mercies are
very great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men.”
And the sons of
Eliezer were, Rehabiah the chief. And
Eliezer had none other sons; but the sons of Rehabiah were
very many.
The descendants of
Eliezer: Rehabiah was the first.
Eliezer did not have any other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were
very numerous.
But will God in very deed dwell with men on the earth? behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house which I have built!
But will God indeed dwell with man upon the earth? Even heaven, the highest heaven, cannot contain You, much less this temple I have built.
Also at the same time Solomon kept the feast seven days, and all Israel with him, a
very great congregation, from the entering in of

hamath to the
Brook of Egypt—kept the feast for seven days.
And when the queen of
Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to prove Solomon with hard questions at Jerusalem, with a
very great company, and camels that bare spices, and gold in abundance, and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart.
Now when the queen of
Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon, she came to test him with difficult questions. She arrived in Jerusalem with a
very large
caravan—with camels bearing spices, gold in abundance, and precious stones. So she came to Solomon and spoke with him about all that was on her mind.
And
Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto
Gerar: and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before the LORD, and before his host; and they carried away
very much
spoil.
Then
Asa and his army pursued them as far as
Gerar. The Cushites fell and could not recover, for they were
crushed before the LORD and His army. So the people of Judah carried off a great amount of
plunder Were not the Ethiopians and the Lubims a huge host, with
very many
chariots and
horsemen? yet, because thou
didst rely on the LORD, he delivered them into thine hand.
Were not the Cushites and Libyans a vast army with many
chariots and
horsemen? Yet because you
relied on the LORD, He delivered them into your hand.
And they buried him in his own
sepulchres, which he had made for himself in the city of David, and laid him in the bed which was filled with sweet odours and
divers kinds of spices prepared by the
apothecaries’ art: and they made a
very great burning for him.
And he was buried in the tomb that he had cut out for himself in the City of David. They laid him on a
bier that was full of spices and various
blended perfumes; then they made a great fire in his honor.
And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high.
And the Levites from the Kohathites and Korahites stood up to praise the LORD, the God of Israel,
shouting in a
very loud voice.
And after this did
Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with

very great host into their hand, because they had
forsaken the LORD God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against
Joash.

And
Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honour: and he made himself
treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of pleasant jewels;
Hezekiah had
very great riches and honor, and he made
treasuries for his silver, gold, precious stones, spices, shields, and all kinds of valuable articles.
Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance: for God had given him substance very much.
He made cities for himself, and he acquired herds of sheep and cattle in abundance, for God gave him very great wealth.
Now after this he built a wall without the city of David, on the west side of
Gihon, in the valley, even to the entering in at the fish gate, and compassed about Ophel, and raised it up a
very great height, and put captains of war in all the
fenced cities of Judah.
After this,
Manasseh rebuilt the outer wall of the City of David from west of
Gihon in the valley to the entrance of the Fish Gate, and he brought it around the hill of Ophel and
heightened it considerably. He also stationed military commanders in all the fortified cities of Judah.
Moreover all the chief of the priests, and the people,
transgressed very much after all the abominations of the heathen; and
polluted the house of the LORD which he had
hallowed in Jerusalem.
Furthermore, all the leaders of the priests and the people multiplied their unfaithful deeds, following all the abominations of the nations, and they
defiled the house of the LORD, which He had consecrated in Jerusalem.
Now when
Ezra had prayed, and when he had
confessed,
weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a
very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people
wept very sore.
While
Ezra prayed and made this confession,
weeping and falling facedown before the house of God, a
very large assembly of Israelites—men, women, and children—gathered around him, and the people
wept bitterly as well.
We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses.
We have
behaved corruptly against You and have not kept the commandments, statutes, and ordinances that You gave Your servant Moses.
Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance
sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was
very sore afraid,
so the king said to me, “Why is your face
sad, though you are not ill? This could only be
sadness of the heart.” I was
overwhelmed with fear
But it came to pass, that when
Sanballat, and
Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the
Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were
very wroth,
When
Sanballat and
Tobiah, together with the Arabs,
Ammonites, and Ashdodites, heard that the repair to the walls of Jerusalem was progressing and that the gaps were being closed, they were
furious,
And I was
very angry when I heard their cry and these words.
When I heard their outcry and these complaints, I became extremely
angry,
And all the congregation of them that were come again out of the captivity made booths, and sat under the booths: for since the days of Jeshua the son of
Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was
very great
gladness.
The whole assembly who had returned from exile made booths and lived in them. From the days of Joshua son of
Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated like this. And there was great
rejoicing.
But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king
very wroth, and his anger burned in him.
Queen Vashti, however, refused to come at the king’s command brought by his eunuchs. And the king became
furious, and his anger burned within him.
Likewise shall the ladies of Persia and Media say this day unto all the king’s princes, which have heard of the deed of the queen. Thus shall there arise too much contempt and wrath.
This very day the noble women of Persia and Media who have heard about the queen’s conduct will say the same thing to all the king’s officials, resulting in much contempt and wrath.
His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she
asses, and a
very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
and he owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female
donkeys, and a
very large number of servants. Job was the greatest man of all the people of the East.
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So
Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
“
Very well,” said the LORD to
Satan. “Everything he has is in your hands, but you must not lay a hand on the man himself.” Then
Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.
“
Very well,” said the LORD to
Satan. “He is in your hands, but you must
spare his life.”
So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.
Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights, but no one spoke a word to him because they saw how intense his suffering was.
With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.
Both the gray-haired and the aged are on our side— men much older than your father.
And
Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and ye are
very old; wherefore I was afraid, and
durst not
shew you mine opinion.
So
Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite declared: “I am young in years, while you are old; that is why I was
timid and afraid to tell you what I know.
Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying,
Surely you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard these very words:
For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is
very wickedness; their throat is an open
sepulchre; they
flatter with their tongue.
For not a word they speak can be trusted; destruction lies within them. Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice
deceit.
O thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetual end: and thou hast destroyed cities; their
memorial is perished with them.
The enemy has come to eternal ruin, and You have uprooted their cities; the
very memory of them has
vanished.
Let destruction come upon him at unawares; and let his net that he hath
hid catch himself: into that
very destruction let him fall.
May ruin
befall them by surprise; may the net they
hid ensnare them; may they fall into the
hazard they created.
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble.
Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall
devour before him, and it shall be
very tempestuous round about him.
Our God approaches and will not be silent!
Consuming fire precedes Him, and a
tempest rages around Him.
Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee!
Your righteousness reaches to the heavens, O God, You who have done great things. Who, O God, is like You?
O remember not against us former
iniquities: let thy tender
mercies speedily prevent us: for we are brought
very low.
Do not hold past sins against us; let Your
compassion come quickly, for we are brought low.
For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens.
For I have said, “Loving devotion is built up
forever; in the heavens You establish Your faithfulness.”
O LORD, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are very deep.
How great are Your works, O LORD, how deep are Your thoughts!
Your
testimonies are fully confirmed;
holiness adorns Your house, O LORD, for all the days to come.
Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art
very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty.
Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, You are
very great; You are clothed with
splendor and majesty.
When they were but a few men in number;
yea,
very few, and strangers in it.
When they were few in number, few indeed, and strangers in the land,
And he increased his people greatly; and made them stronger than their enemies.
And the LORD made His people very fruitful, more numerous than their foes,
I am severely
afflicted, O LORD; revive me through Your word.
I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes
alway, even unto the end.
I have inclined my heart to perform Your statutes, even to the very end.
