Then said Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye see the man is
mad:
wherefore then have ye brought him to me?
Then Achish said to his servants, “Look, you can see that the man is
insane! Why have you brought him to me?
And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me.
From there David went to Mizpeh of Moab, where he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and mother stay with you until I learn what God will do for me.”
Go, I pray you, prepare yet, and know and see his place
where his
haunt is, and who hath seen him there: for it is told me that he dealeth very
subtilly.
Please go and prepare further.
Investigate and watch carefully
where he goes and who has seen him there, for I am told that he is extremely
cunning.
See therefore, and take knowledge of all the
lurking places
where he hideth himself, and come ye again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out throughout all the thousands of Judah.
Observe and find out all the places where he hides. Then come back to me with certainty, and I will go with you. If he is in the land, I will search him out among all the clans of Judah.”
Saul also and his men went to seek him. And they told David: wherefore he came down into a rock, and abode in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.
and Saul and his men went to seek him. When David was told about it, he went down to the rock and stayed in the Wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard of this, he pursued David there.
Wherefore Saul returned from pursuing after David, and went against the Philistines: therefore they called that place Sela-hammahlekoth.
So Saul broke off his pursuit of David and went to meet the Philistines. That is why that place is called Sela-hammahlekoth.
And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.
Soon Saul came to the sheepfolds along the road,
where there was a cave, and he went in to
relieve himself. And David and his men were hiding in the recesses of the cave.
And David said to Saul,
Wherefore hearest thou men’s words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy
hurt?
and said to Saul, “Why do you
listen to the words of men who say, ‘Look, David intends to
harm you’?
And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil.
and said to David, “You are more righteous than I, for you have rewarded me with good, though I have rewarded you with evil.
For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore the LORD reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day.
When a man finds his enemy, does he let him go away
unharmed? May the LORD reward you with good for what you have done for me this day.
Ask thy young men, and they will
shew thee.
Wherefore let the young men find favour in thine eyes: for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee,
whatsoever cometh to thine hand unto thy servants, and to thy son David.
Ask your young men, and they will tell you. So let my young men find favor with you, for we have come on the day of a feast. Please give whatever you can afford to your servants and to your son David.’”
And
Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal’s heart was
merry within him, for he was very
drunken:
wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light.
When
Abigail returned to Nabal, there he was in the house, holding a feast fit for a king, in high spirits and very
drunk. So she told him nothing until morning light.
And David arose, and came to the place
where Saul had pitched: and David
beheld the place
where Saul lay, and
Abner the son of
Ner, the captain of his host: and Saul lay in the
trench, and the people pitched round about him.
Then David set out and went to the place
where Saul had camped. He saw the place
where Saul and
Abner son of
Ner, the general of his army, had
lain down. Saul was lying inside the inner circle of the camp, with the troops camped around him.
And David said to
Abner, Art not thou a
valiant man? and who is like to thee in Israel?
wherefore then hast thou not kept thy lord the king? for there came one of the people in to destroy the king thy lord.
So David said to
Abner, “You are a man, aren’t you? And who in Israel is your equal? Why then did you not protect your lord the king when one of the people came to destroy him?
This thing is not good that thou hast done. As the LORD liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept your master, the LORD’S
anointed. And now see
where the king’s
spear is, and the
cruse of water that was at his
bolster.
This thing you have done is not good. As surely as the LORD lives, all of you deserve to die, since you did not protect your lord, the LORD’s
anointed. Now look around.
Where are the king’s
spear and water
jug that were by his head?”
And he said,
Wherefore doth my lord thus pursue after his servant? for what have I done? or what evil is in mine hand?
And he continued, “Why is my lord pursuing his servant? What have I done? What evil is in my hand?
Then Achish gave him
Ziklag that day:
wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day.
That day Achish gave him
Ziklag, and to this day it still belongs to the kings of Judah.
And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land:
wherefore then layest thou a
snare for my life, to cause me to die?
But the woman replied, “Surely you know what Saul has done, how he has killed the mediums and spiritists in the land. Why have you set a
trap to get me killed?”
Then said Samuel,
Wherefore then
dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?
“Why do you
consult me,” asked Samuel, “since the LORD has turned away from you and become your enemy?
And the princes of the Philistines were
wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an
adversary to us: for
wherewith should he
reconcile himself unto his master? should it not be with the heads of these men?
But the commanders of the Philistines were
angry with Achish and told him, “Send that man back and let him return to the place you assigned him. He must not go down with us into battle only to become our
adversary during the war. What better way for him to regain the favor of his master than with the heads of our men?
Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thou displease not the lords of the Philistines.
Therefore turn back now and go in peace, so that you will not do anything to displease the leaders of the Philistines.”
Wherefore now rise up early in the morning with thy master’s servants that are come with thee: and as soon as ye be up early in the morning, and have light, depart.
Now then, get up early in the morning, along with your master’s servants who came with you, and go as soon as it is light.”
So David went, he and the six hundred men that were with him, and came to the
brook Besor,
where those that were left behind stayed.
So David and his six hundred men went to the
Brook of Besor,
where some stayed behind
And David said unto him, To whom belongest thou? and whence art thou? And he said, I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days
agone I fell sick.
Then David asked him, “To whom do you belong, and where are you from?” “I am an Egyptian,” he replied, “the slave of an Amalekite. My master abandoned me three days ago when I fell ill.
And to them which were in
Hebron, and to all the places
where David himself and his men were
wont to
haunt.
and to those in
Hebron and in all the places
where David and his men had
roamed.
And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped.
“
Where have you come from?” David asked. “I have escaped from the
Israelite camp,” he replied.
And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.
And David inquired of the young man who had brought him the report, “Where are you from?” “I am the son of a foreigner,” he answered. “I am an Amalekite.”
And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said,
Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto
Hebron.
Some time later, David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” “Go up,” the LORD answered. Then David asked, “
Where should I go?” “To
Hebron,” replied the LORD.
And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together:
wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in
Gibeon.
Then each man
grabbed his
opponent by the head and thrust his sword into his
opponent’s side, and they all fell together. So this place, which is in
Gibeon, is called Helkath-hazzurim.
And
Abner said again to
Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me:
wherefore should I
smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to
Joab thy brother?
Howbeit he refused to turn aside:
wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the
spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the
spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place
where Asahel fell down and died stood still.
But
Asahel refused to turn away; so
Abner thrust the
butt of his
spear into his stomach, and it came out his back, and he fell dead on the spot. And every man
paused when he came to the place
where Asahel had fallen and died.
And Saul had a
concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: and
Ish-bosheth said to
Abner,
Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my father’s
concubine?
Meanwhile, Saul had a
concubine named Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah. So
Ish-bosheth questioned
Abner, “Why did you sleep with my father’s
concubine?”
So all the elders of Israel came to the king to
Hebron; and king David made a league with them in
Hebron before the LORD: and they
anointed David king over Israel.
So all the elders of Israel came to the king at
Hebron,
where King David made with them a covenant before the LORD. And they
anointed him king over Israel.
And David said on that day,
Whosoever getteth up to the
gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the
lame and the blind, that are
hated of David’s soul, he shall be chief and captain.
Wherefore they said, The blind and the
lame shall not come into the house.
On that day he said, “
Whoever attacks the Jebusites must use the water shaft to reach the
lame and blind who are
despised by David.” That is why it is said, “The blind and the
lame will never enter the palace.”
And David came to
Baal-perazim, and David
smote them there, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place
Baal-perazim.
So David went to
Baal-perazim,
where he defeated the Philistines and said, “Like a
bursting flood, the LORD has
burst out against my enemies before me.” So he called that place
Baal-perazim.
Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.
For I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt until this day, but I have moved about with a tent as My dwelling.
In all the places
wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye not me an house of
cedar?
In all My journeys with all the Israelites, have I ever asked any of the leaders I appointed to
shepherd My people Israel, ‘Why
haven’t you built Me a house of
cedar?’
And I was with thee
whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make for you a name like the greatest in the land.
Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
How great You are, O Lord GOD! For there is none like You, and there is no God but You, according to everything we have heard with our own ears.
Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the LORD preserved David
whithersoever he went.
Then he placed garrisons in
Aram of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject to David and brought him tribute. So the LORD made David victorious
wherever he went.
And he put garrisons in
Edom; throughout all
Edom put he garrisons, and all they of
Edom became David’s servants. And the LORD preserved David
whithersoever he went.
He placed garrisons throughout
Edom, and all the Edomites were subject to David. So the LORD made David victorious
wherever he went.
And the king said unto him,
Where is he? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he is in the house of Machir, the son of Ammiel, in Lo-
debar.
“
Where is he?” replied the king. And Ziba said, “Indeed, he is in Lo-
debar at the house of Machir son of Ammiel.”
Wherefore Hanun took David’s servants, and
shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.
So Hanun took David’s servants,
shaved off half of each man’s
beard, cut off their garments at the hips, and sent them away.
And it came to pass, when
Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place
where he knew that
valiant men were.
So as
Joab besieged the city, he assigned Uriah to a place
where he saw the strongest enemy soldiers.
And if so be that the king’s wrath arise, and he say unto thee,
Wherefore approached ye so
nigh unto the city when ye did fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall?
if the king’s anger flares, he may ask you, ‘Why did you get so close to the city to fight? Did you not
realize they would shoot from
atop the wall?
Wherefore hast thou
despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of
Ammon.
Why then have you
despised the command of the LORD by doing evil in His sight? You put Uriah the Hittite to the sword and took his wife as your own, for you have slain him with the sword of the
Ammonites.
But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.
But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”
And he took their king’s crown from off his head, the weight
whereof was a talent of gold with the precious stones: and it was set on David’s head. And he brought forth the
spoil of the city in great abundance.
Then he took the crown from the head of their king. It
weighed a talent of gold and was set with precious stones, and it was placed on David’s head. And David took a great amount of
plunder from the city.
And I,
whither shall I cause my shame to go? and as for thee, thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not
withhold me from thee.
Where could I ever take my shame? And you would be like one of the fools in Israel! Please speak to the king, for he will not
withhold me from you.”
Then Amnon
hated her exceedingly; so that the hatred
wherewith he
hated her was greater than the love
wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone.
Then Amnon
hated Tamar with such intensity that his hatred was greater than the love he previously had. “Get up!” he said to her. “Be gone!”
And the woman said,
Wherefore then hast thou thought such a thing against the people of God? for the king
doth speak this thing as one which is
faulty, in that the king
doth not
fetch home again his banished.
The woman asked, “Why have you devised a thing like this against the people of God? When the king says this, does he not
convict himself, since he has not brought back his own banished son?
Then
Joab arose, and came to
Absalom unto his house, and said unto him,
Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire?
Then
Joab came to
Absalom’s house and demanded, “Why did your servants set my field on fire?”
And
Absalom answered
Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come
hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say,
Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king’s face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me.
“Look,” said
Absalom, “I sent for you and said, ‘Come here. I want to send you to the king to ask: Why have I come back from Geshur? It would be better for me if I were still there.’ So now, let me see the king’s face, and if there is iniquity in me, let him kill me.”
Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite,
Wherefore goest thou also with us? return to thy place, and
abide with the king: for thou art a stranger, and also an exile.
Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why should you also go with us? Go back and stay with the new king, since you are both a foreigner and an exile from your homeland.
Whereas thou camest but
yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I go
whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.
In fact, you arrived only
yesterday; should I make you
wander around with us
today while I do not know
where I am going? Go back and take your brothers with you. May the LORD show you loving devotion and faithfulness.”
And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the LORD liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be.
But Ittai answered the king, “As surely as the LORD lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king may be, whether it means life or death, there will your servant be!”
And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head:
When David came to the summit,
where he used to worship God, Hushai the Archite was there to meet him with his
robe torn and dust on his head.
And the king said, And
where is thy master’s son? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he abideth at Jerusalem: for he said,
Today shall the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father.
“
Where is your master’s grandson?” asked the king. And Ziba answered, “Indeed, he is staying in Jerusalem, for he has said, ‘
Today, the house of Israel will restore to me the kingdom of my
grandfather.’”
And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? so let him
curse, because the LORD hath said unto him,
Curse David. Who shall then say,
Wherefore hast thou done so?
But the king replied, “What have I to do with you, O sons of Zeruiah? If he curses me because the LORD told him, ‘
Curse David,’ who can ask, ‘Why did you do this?’”
So shall we come upon him in some place
where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the
dew falleth on the ground: and of him and of all the men that are with him there shall not be left so much as one.
Then we will attack David
wherever we find him, and we will descend on him like
dew on the ground. And of all the men with him, not even one will remain.
Now
Jonathan and
Ahimaaz stayed by En-rogel; for they might not be seen to come into the city: and a
wench went and told them; and they went and told king David.
Now
Jonathan and
Ahimaaz were staying at En-rogel,
where a servant
girl would come and pass along information to them. They in turn would go and inform King David, for they
dared not be seen entering the city.
And when
Absalom’s servants came to the woman to the house, they said,
Where is
Ahimaaz and
Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They be gone over the
brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.
When
Absalom’s servants came to the woman at the house, they asked, “
Where are
Ahimaaz and
Jonathan?” “They have crossed over the
brook,” she replied. The men searched but did not find them, so they returned to Jerusalem.
Where the people of Israel were slain before the servants of David, and there was there a great slaughter that day of twenty thousand men.
There the people of Israel were defeated by David’s servants, and the slaughter was great that day—twenty thousand men.
Ahimaaz son of
Zadok, however,
persisted and said to
Joab, “Regardless of whatever may happen, please let me also run behind the
Cushite!” “My son,”
Joab replied, “why do you want to run, since you will not receive a reward?”
Ye are my brethren, ye are my bones and my flesh: wherefore then are ye the last to bring back the king?
You are my brothers, my own flesh and blood. So why should you be the last to restore the king?’
And it came to pass, when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said unto him, Wherefore wentest not thou with me, Mephibosheth?
And he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, who asked him, “Mephibosheth, why did you not go with me?”
I am this day
fourscore years old: and can I
discern between good and evil? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women?
wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?
I am now eighty years old. Can I
discern what is good and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats or drinks? Can I still hear the voice of singing men and women? Why should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?
And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of
kin to us:
wherefore then be ye
angry for this matter? have we eaten at all of the king’s cost? or hath he given us any gift?
And all the men of Judah replied to the men of Israel, “We did this because the king is our relative. Why does this anger you? Have we ever eaten at the king’s expense or received anything for ourselves?”
Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and
wherewith shall I make the
atonement, that ye may
bless the inheritance of the LORD?
So David asked the Gibeonites, “What shall I do for you? How can I make
amends so that you may
bless the inheritance of the LORD?”
And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of
Jonathan his son from the men of
Jabesh-
gilead, which had
stolen them from the street of Beth-shan,
where the Philistines had
hanged them, when the Philistines had slain Saul in
Gilboa:
he went and took the bones of Saul and his son
Jonathan from the men of
Jabesh-
gilead, who had
stolen them from the public square of Beth-shan
where the Philistines had hung the bodies after they had struck down Saul at
Gilboa.
And there was again a battle in
Gob with the Philistines,
where Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim, a
Bethlehemite,
slew the brother of
Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose
spear was like a
weaver’s beam.
Once again there was a battle with the Philistines at
Gob, and Elhanan son of
Jair the
Bethlehemite killed the brother of
Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose
spear was like a
weaver’s beam.
And there was yet a battle in
Gath,
where was a man of great
stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the
giant.
And there was still another battle at
Gath,
where there was a man of great
stature with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot—twenty-four in all. He too was descended from Rapha,
But the man that shall touch them must be
fenced with iron and the staff of a
spear; and they shall be utterly burned with fire in the same place.
The man who touches them must be armed with iron or with the shaft of a
spear. The fire burns them to ashes in the place
where they lie.”
And after him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a
troop,
where was a piece of ground full of lentiles: and the people fled from the Philistines.
And after him was Shammah son of Agee the Hararite. When the Philistines had banded together near a field full of lentils, Israel’s troops fled from them.
And Araunah said,
Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To
buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the LORD, that the plague may be stayed from the people.
“Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” Araunah said. “To
buy your
threshing floor,” David replied, “that I may build an altar to the LORD, so that the plague upon the people may be
halted.”
Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her
cherish him, and let her lie in thy
bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.
So his servants said to him, “Let us search for a young virgin for our lord the king, to attend to him and care for him and lie by his side to keep him warm.”
Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bath-
sheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith
doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?
Then
Nathan said to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, “Have you not heard that Adonijah son of Haggith has become king, and our lord David does not know it?
And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when
Joab heard the sound of the
trumpet, he said,
Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an
uproar?
Now Adonijah and all his guests were finishing their feast when they heard the sound of the ram’s horn. “Why is the city in such a loud
uproar?” asked
Joab.
And keep the charge of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his
testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest
prosper in all that thou doest, and
whithersoever thou turnest
thyself:
And keep the charge of the LORD your God to walk in His ways and to keep His statutes, commandments, ordinances, and decrees, as is written in the Law of Moses, so that you may
prosper in all you do and
wherever you turn,
And unto
Abiathar the priest said the king, Get thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields; for thou art worthy of death: but I will not at this time put thee to death, because thou barest the ark of the Lord GOD before David my father, and because thou hast been
afflicted in all
wherein my father was
afflicted.
Then the king said to
Abiathar the priest, “Go back to your fields in Anathoth. Even though you deserve to die, I will not put you to death at this time, since you carried the ark of the Lord GOD before my father David, and you suffered through all that my father suffered.”
Barley also and straw for the horses and
dromedaries brought they unto the place
where the officers were, every man according to his charge.
Each one also brought to the required place their quotas of barley and straw for the
chariot horses and other horses.
Then he made a
porch for the throne
where he might judge, even the
porch of judgment: and it was covered with
cedar from one side of the floor to the other.
In addition, he built a hall for the throne, the Hall of Justice,
where he was to judge. It was
paneled with
cedar from floor to
ceiling.
And his house
where he dwelt had another court within the
porch, which was of the like work. Solomon made also an house for Pharaoh’s daughter, whom he had taken to wife, like unto this
porch.
And the palace where Solomon would live, set further back, was of similar construction. He also made a palace like this hall for Pharaoh’s daughter, whom he had married.
For on the plates of the ledges thereof, and on the borders thereof, he graved cherubims, lions, and palm trees, according to the proportion of every one, and additions round about.
He engraved
cherubim, lions, and palm trees on the surfaces of the supports and panels,
wherever each had space, with
wreaths all around.
And Solomon made all the vessels that
pertained unto the house of the LORD: the altar of gold, and the table of gold,
whereupon the
shewbread was,
Solomon also made all the furnishings for the house of the LORD: the golden altar; the golden table on which was placed the Bread of the Presence;
There was nothing in the ark save the two tables of stone, which Moses put there at
Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt.
There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets that Moses had placed in it at
Horeb,
where the LORD had made a covenant with the Israelites after they had come out of the land of Egypt.
And the LORD said unto David my father,
Whereas it was in thine heart to build an house unto my name, thou
didst well that it was in thine heart.
But the LORD said to my father David, ‘Since it was in your heart to build a house for My Name, you have done well to have this in your heart.
And I have set there a place for the ark, wherein is the covenant of the LORD, which he made with our fathers, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.
And there I have provided a place for the ark, which contains the covenant of the LORD that He made with our fathers when He brought them out of the land of Egypt.”
Then hear thou in heaven, and
forgive the sin of thy servants, and of thy people Israel, that thou teach them the good way
wherein they should walk, and give rain upon thy land, which thou hast given to thy people for an inheritance.
then may You hear from heaven and
forgive the sin of Your servants, Your people Israel, so that You may teach them the good way in which they should walk. May You send rain on the land that You gave Your people as an inheritance.
If thy people go out to battle against their enemy,
whithersoever thou shalt send them, and shall pray unto the LORD toward the city which thou hast chosen, and toward the house that I have built for thy name:
When Your people go to war against their enemies, wherever You send them, and when they pray to the LORD in the direction of the city You have chosen and the house I have built for Your Name,
May You
forgive Your people who have
sinned against You and all the transgressions they have committed against You, and may You grant them
compassion in the eyes of their captors to show them mercy.
And it was so, that when Solomon had made an end of praying all this prayer and
supplication unto the LORD, he arose from before the altar of the LORD, from
kneeling on his knees with his hands spread up to heaven.
Now when Solomon had finished praying this entire prayer and petition to the LORD, he got up before the altar of the LORD,
where he had been
kneeling with his hands spread out toward heaven.
And let these my words,
wherewith I have made
supplication before the LORD, be
nigh unto the LORD our God day and night, that he maintain the cause of his servant, and the cause of his people Israel at all times, as the matter shall require:
And may these words with which I have made my petition before the LORD be near to the LORD our God day and night, so that He may
uphold the cause of His servant and of His people Israel as each day requires,
Wherefore the LORD said unto Solomon,
Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely
rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant.
Then the LORD said to Solomon, “Because you have done this and have not kept My covenant and My statutes, which I have commanded you, I will
tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant.
And he gathered men unto him, and became captain over a band, when David
slew them of Zobah: and they went to Damascus, and dwelt therein, and reigned in Damascus.
and had gathered men to himself. When David killed the Zobaites, Rezon captained a band of raiders and went to Damascus, where they settled and gained control.
And unto his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a light
alway before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name there.
I will give one tribe to his son, so that My servant David will always have a lamp before Me in Jerusalem, the city where I chose to put My Name.
Solomon sought therefore to kill
Jeroboam. And
Jeroboam arose, and fled into Egypt, unto
Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.
Solomon therefore sought to kill
Jeroboam. But
Jeroboam arose and fled to Egypt, to
Shishak king of Egypt,
where he remained until the death of Solomon.
And it came to pass, when
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and
Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)
When
Jeroboam son of Nebat heard about this, he was still in Egypt
where he had fled from King Solomon and had been living ever since.
And now
whereas my father did
lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath
chastised you with whips, but I will
chastise you with scorpions.
Whereas my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke.
Whereas my father
scourged you with whips, I will
scourge you with scorpions.’”
And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also
chastised you with whips, but I will
chastise you with scorpions.
and spoke to them as the young men had
advised, saying, “
Whereas my father made your yoke heavy, I will add to your yoke.
Whereas my father
scourged you with whips, I will
scourge you with scorpions.”
