And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done.
When he would not be
dissuaded, we fell silent and said, “The Lord’s
will be done.”
What is it therefore? the multitude must needs come together: for they will hear that thou art come.
What then should we do? They will certainly hear that you have come.
Them take, and
purify thyself with them, and be at charges with them, that they may
shave their heads: and all may know that those things,
whereof they were informed concerning thee, are nothing; but that thou
thyself also walkest orderly, and keepest the law.
Take these men,
purify yourself along with them, and pay their expenses so they can have their heads
shaved. Then
everyone will know that there is no truth to these rumors about you, but that you also live in obedience to the law.
And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.
Then I asked, ‘What should I do, Lord?’ ‘Get up and go into Damascus,’ He told me. ‘There you will be told all that you have been appointed to do.’
And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.
Then he said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know His will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear His voice.
For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.
You
will be His witness to
everyone of what you have seen and heard.
And saw him saying unto me, Make
haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they
will not receive thy testimony concerning me.
and saw the Lord saying to me, ‘
Hurry! Leave Jerusalem quickly, because the people here
will not accept your testimony about Me.’
And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.
Then He said to me, ‘Go! I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’”
Then said Paul unto him, God shall
smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be
smitten contrary to the law?
Then Paul said to him, “God
will strike you, you
whitewashed wall! You sit here to judge me according to the law, yet you
yourself violate the law by commanding that I be struck.”
And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great
curse, that we
will eat nothing until we have slain Paul.
They went to the chief priests and elders and said, “We have bound ourselves with a solemn oath not to eat anything until we have killed Paul.
But do not thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready, looking for a promise from thee.
Do not let them
persuade you, because more than forty men are waiting to
ambush him. They have bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him; they are ready now,
awaiting your consent.”
I will hear thee, said he, when thine accusers are also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod’s judgment hall.
he said, “I
will hear your case when your accusers arrive.” Then he ordered that Paul be kept under guard in Herod’s
Praetorium.
Commanding his accusers to come unto thee: by examining of whom
thyself mayest take knowledge of all these things,
whereof we
accuse him.
By examining him
yourself, you
will be able to learn the truth about all our charges against him.”
And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.
and I have the same hope in God that they themselves
cherish, that there
will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked.
And when
Felix heard these things, having more perfect knowledge of that way, he
deferred them, and said, When
Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I
will know the
uttermost of your matter.
Then
Felix, who was well informed about the Way,
adjourned the hearing and said, “When
Lysias the commander comes, I
will decide your case.”
And as he reasoned of righteousness,
temperance, and judgment to come
Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I
will call for thee.
As Paul
expounded on righteousness, self-control, and the coming judgment,
Felix became
frightened and said, “You may go for now. When I find the time, I
will call for you.”
But after two years Porcius
Festus came into
Felix’ room: and
Felix,
willing to
shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound.
After two years had passed,
Felix was succeeded by Porcius
Festus. And wishing to do the Jews a favor,
Felix left Paul in prison.
But
Festus,
willing to do the Jews a pleasure, answered Paul, and said,
Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things before me?
But
Festus, wishing to do the Jews a favor, said to Paul, “Are you
willing to go up to Jerusalem to stand trial before me on these charges?”
Then
Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Caesar? unto Caesar shalt thou go.
Then
Festus conferred with his council and replied, “You have appealed to Caesar. To Caesar you
will go!”
And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these matters.
Since I was at a loss as to how to
investigate these matters, I asked if he was
willing to go to Jerusalem and be tried there on these charges.
Then
Agrippa said unto
Festus, I would also hear the man myself. To
morrow, said he, thou shalt hear him.
Which knew me from the beginning, if they would
testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a
Pharisee.
They have known me for a long time and can
testify, if they are
willing, that I lived as a
Pharisee,
adhering to the strictest sect of our religion.
But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;
‘But get up and stand on your feet. For I have appeared to you to
appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen from Me and what I
will show you.
Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,
I
will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them
And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage
will be with
hurt and much damage, not only of the
lading and ship, but also of our lives.
“Men, I can see that our voyage
will be filled with
disaster and great loss, not only to ship and
cargo, but to our own lives as well.”
And now I
exhort you to be of good
cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship.
But now I
urge you to keep up your courage, because you
will not experience any loss of life, but only of the ship.
Wherefore, sirs, be of good
cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.
So take courage, men, for I believe God that it will happen just as He told me.
Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.
So for your own preservation, I
urge you to eat something, because not a single hair of your head
will be lost.”
But the
centurion,
willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could
swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land:
Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:
‘Go to this people and say, “You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.”
Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.
Be
advised, therefore, that God’s salvation has been sent to the Gentiles, and they
will listen!”
Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.
in my prayers at all times, asking that now at last by God’s will I may succeed in coming to you.
For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
For the gospel reveals the righteousness of God that comes by faith from start to finish, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”
And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?
So when you, O man, pass judgment on others, yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?
But after thy hardness and
impenitent heart treasurest up unto
thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
But because of your hard and
unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against
yourself for the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment
will be revealed.
Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
God “will repay each one according to his deeds.”
To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:
To those who by
perseverance in doing good seek glory, honor, and immortality, He
will give eternal life.
But unto them that are
contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness,
indignation and wrath,
But for those who are self-seeking and who
reject the truth and follow wickedness, there
will be wrath and anger.
There
will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil, first for the
Jew, then for the Greek;
For as many as have
sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have
sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.
(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but it is the doers of the law who will be declared righteous.
In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.
on the day when God will judge men’s secrets through Christ Jesus, as proclaimed by my gospel.
And knowest his
will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being
instructed out of the law;
if you know His
will and
approve of what is superior because you are
instructed by the law;
For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?
What if some did not have faith?
Will their lack of faith
nullify God’s faithfulness?
Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Therefore no one will be justified in His sight by works of the law. For the law merely brings awareness of sin.
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord
will not
impute sin.
Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him.”
But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
but also for us, to whom righteousness will be credited—for us who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.
For scarcely for a righteous man
will one die: yet
peradventure for a good man some would even
dare to die.
Very rarely
will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly
dare to die.
For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
For if, by the
trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more
will those who receive an abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!
For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
For if we have been united with Him like this in His death, we will certainly also be united with Him in His resurrection.
Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him.
For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh; for I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
O
wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also
quicken your
mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead
will also give life to your
mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.
For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do
mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
For I
reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
I consider that our present sufferings are not comparable to the glory that will be revealed in us.
For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
For the creation was subjected to
futility, not by its own
will, but because of the One who subjected it, in hope
Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the
bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
that the creation itself
will be set free from its
bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.
And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh
intercession for the saints according to the
will of God.
And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
He that
spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
He who did not
spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how
will He not also, along with Him, freely give us all things?
Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s
elect? It is God that justifieth.
Who
will bring any charge against God’s
elect? It is God who justifies.
Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.
Nor because they are Abraham’s descendants are they all his children. On the contrary, “Through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.”
For this is the word of promise, At this time
will I come, and
Sarah shall have a son.
For this is what the promise stated: “At the appointed time I
will return, and
Sarah will have a son.”
It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.
not by works but by Him who calls, she was told, “The older will serve the younger.”
For he saith to Moses, I
will have mercy on whom I
will have mercy, and I
will have
compassion on whom I
will have
compassion.
For He says to Moses: “I
will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I
will have
compassion on whom I have
compassion.”
So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
So then, it does not depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.
Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.
Therefore God has mercy on whom He wants to have mercy, and He hardens whom He wants to
harden.
Thou
wilt say then unto me, Why
doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his
will?
One of you will say to me, “Then why does God still find fault? For who can resist His will?”
What if God,
willing to
shew his wrath, and to make his power known,
endured with much
longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
What if God, intending to show His wrath and make His power known, bore with great
patience the vessels of His wrath, prepared for destruction?
As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.
As He says in
Hosea: “I
will call them ‘My People’ who are not My people, and I
will call her ‘My Beloved’ who is not My beloved,”
And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.
and, “It will happen that in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not My people,’ they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’”
Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a
remnant shall be saved:
Isaiah
cries out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the Israelites is like the sand of the sea, only the
remnant will be saved.
For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.
For the Lord will carry out His sentence on the earth thoroughly and decisively.”
What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.
What then will we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith;
As it is written, Behold, I lay in
Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and
whosoever believeth on him shall not be
ashamed.
as it is written: “See, I lay in
Zion a stone of
stumbling and a rock of
offense; and the one who believes in Him
will never be put to shame.”
For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.
For concerning the righteousness that is by the law, Moses writes: “The man who does these things will live by them.”
But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall
ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)
But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who
will ascend into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down)
Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)
or, ‘Who
will descend into the
Abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).”
That if thou shalt
confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
that if you
confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you
will be saved.
It is just as the Scripture says: “
Anyone who believes in Him
will never be put to shame.”
For
whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
for, “
Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord
will be saved.”
But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I
will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a
foolish nation I
will anger you.
I ask instead, did Israel not understand? First, Moses says: “I
will make you
jealous by those who are not a nation; I
will make you
angry by a nation without understanding.”
Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their
fulness?
But if their
trespass means riches for the world, and their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches
will their fullness bring!
For if the casting away of them be the
reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?
Thou
wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in.
You
will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be
grafted in.”
For if God
spared not the natural branches, take
heed lest he also
spare not thee.
For if God did not
spare the natural branches, He
will certainly not
spare you either.
Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.
Take notice, therefore, of the kindness and severity of God: severity to those who fell, but kindness to you, if you continue in His kindness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.
And they also, if they
abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to
graff them in again.
And if they do not
persist in unbelief, they
will be
grafted in, for God is able to
graft them in again.
For if thou
wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and
wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?
For if you were cut from a wild olive tree, and contrary to nature were
grafted into one that is cultivated, how much more readily
will these, the natural branches, be
grafted into their own olive tree!
For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this
mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the
fulness of the Gentiles be come in.
I do not want you to be ignorant of this
mystery, brothers, so that you
will not be
conceited: A
hardening in part has come to Israel, until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.
And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of
Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away
ungodliness from Jacob:
And so all Israel
will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer
will come from
Zion; He
will remove
godlessness from Jacob.
And be not
conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect,
will of God.
Do not be
conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you
will be able to test and
approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect
will of God.
Do not
avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: “
Vengeance is Mine; I
will repay, says the Lord.”
Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he
thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt
heap coals of fire on his head.
On the contrary, “If your enemy is
hungry, feed him; if he is
thirsty, give him a drink. For in so doing, you
will heap burning coals on his head.”
Consequently,
whoever resists authority is
opposing what God has set in place, and those who do so
will bring judgment on themselves.
