And if a man will at all
redeem ought of his
tithes, he shall add
thereto the fifth part thereof.
If a man
wishes to
redeem part of his
tithe, he must add a fifth to its value.
And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD’S people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!
But Moses replied, “Are you
jealous on my account? I
wish that all the LORD’s people were prophets and that the LORD would place His Spirit on them!”
And thou shalt
bestow that money for
whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for
whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the LORD thy God, and thou shalt
rejoice, thou, and thine household,
Then you may
spend the money on anything you desire: cattle, sheep, wine, strong drink, or anything you
wish. You are to feast there in the presence of the LORD your God and
rejoice with your household.
And it shall be, if thou have no delight in her, then thou shalt let her go
whither she will; but thou shalt not sell her at all for money, thou shalt not make
merchandise of her, because thou hast humbled her.
And if you are not pleased with her, you are to let her go wherever she wishes. But you must not sell her for money or treat her as a slave, since you have dishonored her.
Behold, here is my daughter a
maiden, and his
concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so
vile a thing.
Look, let me bring out my virgin daughter and the man’s
concubine, and you can use them and do with them as you
wish. But do not do such a
vile thing to this man.”
And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the
skirt of Saul’s
robe privily.
So David’s men said to him, “This is the day about which the LORD said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do with him as you
wish.’” Then David
crept up secretly and cut off a corner of Saul’s
robe.
And he said unto her, Because I spake unto
Naboth the Jezreelite, and said unto him, Give me thy
vineyard for money; or else, if it please thee, I will give thee another
vineyard for it: and he answered, I will not give thee my
vineyard.
Ahab answered, “Because I spoke to
Naboth the Jezreelite and told him, ‘Give me your
vineyard for silver, or if you
wish, I will give you another
vineyard in its place.’ And he replied, ‘I will not give you my
vineyard!’”
But king
Joram was returned to be
healed in
Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians had given him, when he fought with
Hazael king of Syria.) And
Jehu said, If it be your minds, then let none go forth nor escape out of the city to go to tell it in
Jezreel.
but King
Joram had returned to
Jezreel to recover from the wounds he had suffered at the hands of the Arameans in the battle against
Hazael their king.) So
Jehu said, “If you commanders
wish to make me king, then do not let
anyone escape from the city to go and tell it in
Jezreel.”
So the children went in and possessed the land, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, the
Canaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they would.
So their descendants went in and possessed the land; You subdued before them the
Canaanites dwelling in the land. You delivered into their hands the kings and peoples of the land, to do with them as they
wished.
If he will
contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.
If one
wished to
contend with God, he could not answer Him one time out of a thousand.
Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were printed in a book!
I wish that my words were recorded and inscribed in a book,
Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by
wishing a
curse to his soul.
I have not allowed my mouth to sin by asking for his life with a
curse—
Behold, I am according to thy
wish in God’s
stead: I also am formed out of the clay.
I am just like you before God; I was also formed from clay.
They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my
hurt speak
mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long.
Those who seek my life lay snares; those who
wish me
harm speak destruction,
plotting deceit all day long.
Let them be
ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that
wish me evil.
Let them be
ashamed and confounded that seek after my soul: let them be turned backward, and put to confusion, that desire my
hurt.
Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.
From their prosperity proceeds iniquity; the imaginations of their hearts run wild.
Righteous art thou, O LORD, when I
plead with thee: yet let me talk with thee of thy judgments: Wherefore
doth the way of the wicked
prosper? wherefore are all they happy that deal very
treacherously?
Righteous are You, O LORD, when I
plead before You. Yet about Your judgments I
wish to
contend with You: Why does the way of the wicked
prosper? Why do all the faithless live at ease?
This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to
whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.
This decision is the decree of the watchers, the
verdict declared by the holy ones, so that the living will know that the Most High rules over the kingdom of mankind and gives it to whom He
wishes, setting over it the lowliest of men.’
That they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and they shall wet thee with the
dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to
whomsoever he will.
You will be driven away from mankind, and your dwelling will be with the beasts of the field. You will feed on grass like an ox and be
drenched with the
dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass you by, until you acknowledge that the Most High rules over the kingdom of mankind and gives it to whom He
wishes.
And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to
whomsoever he will.
You will be driven away from mankind to live with the beasts of the field, and you will feed on grass like an ox. And seven times will pass you by, until you acknowledge that the Most High rules over the kingdom of mankind and gives it to whom He wishes.”
And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages,
trembled and feared before him: whom he would he
slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down.
Because of the greatness that He bestowed on him, the people of every nation and language
trembled in fear before him. He killed whom he
wished and kept alive whom he
wished; he
exalted whom he
wished and humbled whom he
wished.
And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild
asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the
dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it
whomsoever he will.
He was driven away from mankind, and his mind was like that of a beast. He lived with the wild
donkeys and
ate grass like an ox, and his body was
drenched with the
dew of heaven until he acknowledged that the Most High God rules over the kingdom of mankind, setting over it whom He
wishes.
And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a
vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of
Jonah, that he
fainted, and
wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
As the sun was rising, God appointed a
scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on
Jonah’s head so that he grew
faint and
wished to die, saying, “It is better for me to die than to live.”
And the king was
sorry: nevertheless for the oath’s sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.
The king was
grieved, but because of his oaths and his guests, he ordered that her
wish be granted
Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou
wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If You
wish, I will put up three shelters—one for You, one for Moses, and one for
Elijah.”
But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him
whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.
But I tell you that
Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him whatever they
wished. In the same way, the Son of Man will suffer at their hands.”
But
woe unto you,
scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in
yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
Woe to you,
scribes and
Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You
yourselves do not enter, nor will you let in those who
wish to enter.
And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the
damsel, Ask of me
whatsoever thou
wilt, and I will give it thee.
When the daughter of Herodias came and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests, and the king said to the
girl, “Ask me for whatever you
wish, and I will give it to you.”
But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him
whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him.
But I tell you that
Elijah has indeed come, and they have done to him whatever they
wished, just as it is written about him.”
And so
Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had
scourged him, to be
crucified.
And
wishing to satisfy the crowd,
Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus
flogged, and handed Him over to be
crucified.
And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to
whomsoever I will I give it.
“I will give You authority over all these kingdoms and all their glory,” he said. “For it has been
relinquished to me, and I can give it to
anyone I
wish.
I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I if it be already
kindled?
I have come to
ignite a fire on the earth, and how I
wish it were already
kindled!
For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?
Which of you, wishing to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost to see if he has the resources to complete it?
And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
And besides all this, a great
chasm has been fixed between us and you, so that even those who
wish cannot cross from here to you, nor can
anyone cross from there to us.’
The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and
whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
The wind blows where it
wishes. You hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with
everyone born of the Spirit.”
For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom He wishes.
If ye
abide in me, and my words
abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
But after two years Porcius
Festus came into
Felix’ room: and
Felix, willing to
shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound.
After two years had passed,
Felix was succeeded by Porcius
Festus. And
wishing to do the Jews a favor,
Felix left Paul in prison.
But
Festus, willing to do the Jews a pleasure, answered Paul, and said,
Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things before me?
But
Festus,
wishing to do the Jews a favor, said to Paul, “Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem to stand trial before me on these charges?”
And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds.
“Short time or long,” Paul replied, “I wish to God that not only you but all who hear me this day may become what I am, except for these chains.”
Then fearing lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.
Fearing that we would run
aground on the rocks, they dropped four anchors from the stern and prayed for
daybreak.
For I could
wish that myself were
accursed from Christ for my brethren, my
kinsmen according to the flesh:
For I could
wish that I myself were
cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my own flesh and blood,
Now ye are full, now ye are rich, ye have reigned as kings without us: and I would to God ye did reign, that we also might reign with you.
Already you have all you want. Already you have become rich. Without us, you have become kings. How I wish you really were kings, so that we might be kings with you!
For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.
I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.
But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry.
However, if someone thinks he is acting inappropriately toward his
betrothed, and if she is beyond her youth and they ought to marry, let him do as he
wishes; he is not
sinning; they should get married.
The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.
A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry
anyone she
wishes, as long as he belongs to the Lord.
I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye
prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he
interpret, that the church may receive
edifying.
I
wish that all of you could speak in tongues, but I would rather have you
prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be
edified.
And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
If they wish to inquire about something, they are to ask their own husbands at home; for it is dishonorable for a woman to speak in the church.
For we that are in this tabernacle do
groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be
swallowed up of life.
So while we are in this tent, we
groan under our burdens, because we do not
wish to be unclothed but clothed, so that our mortality may be
swallowed up by life.
For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not: lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults:
For I am afraid that when I come, I may not find you as I
wish, and you may not find me as you
wish. I fear that there may be quarreling, jealousy,
rage,
rivalry,
slander,
gossip,
arrogance, and disorder.
For we are
glad, when we are weak, and ye are strong: and this also we
wish, even your perfection.
In fact, we
rejoice when we are weak but you are strong, and our prayer is for your perfection.
But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and
beggarly elements,
whereunto ye desire again to be in
bondage?
But now that you know God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you are turning back to those weak and worthless principles? Do you
wish to be
enslaved by them all over again?
I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.
how I
wish I could be with you now and change my tone, because I am
perplexed about you.
I would they were even cut off which trouble you.
Beloved, I
wish above all things that thou mayest
prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
Beloved, I pray that in every way you may
prosper and enjoy good health, as your soul also prospers.
I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou
wert cold or hot.
I know your deeds; you are neither cold nor hot. How I wish you were one or the other!
These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to
smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.
These witnesses have power to shut the sky so that no rain will fall during the days of their prophecy, and power to turn the waters into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they wish.
And said with himself, I have
wished for death; wherefore do I not call for my son Tobias that I may
signify to him of the money before I die?
Remember thy father and thy mother, when thou sittest among great men. Be not
forgetful before them, and so thou by thy custom become a
fool, and
wish that thou hadst not been born, and
curse they day of thy
nativity.
The brethren, the Jews that be at Jerusalem and in the land of
Judea,
wish unto the brethren, the Jews that are throughout Egypt health and peace:
Antiochus, king and governor, to the good Jews his citizens
wisheth much joy, health, and prosperity:
