The waters made him great, the deep set him up on high with her rivers running round about his plants, and sent out her little rivers unto all the trees of the field.
The waters made it grow; the deep springs made it tall, directing their streams all around its base and sending their channels to all the trees of the field.
Therefore his height was
exalted above all the trees of the field, and his boughs were multiplied, and his branches became long because of the multitude of waters, when he shot forth.
Therefore it towered higher than all the trees of the field. Its branches multiplied, and its boughs grew long as it spread them out because of the abundant waters.
Son of man, take up a
lamentation for Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say unto him, Thou art like a young lion of the nations, and thou art as a
whale in the seas: and thou camest forth with thy rivers, and troubledst the waters with thy feet, and fouledst their rivers.
“Son of man, take up a
lament for Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him: ‘You are like a lion among the nations; you are like a
monster in the seas. You
thrash about in your rivers,
churning up the waters with your feet and
muddying the streams.’
I will also
vex the hearts of many people, when I shall bring thy destruction among the nations, into the countries which thou hast not known.
‘I will trouble the hearts of many peoples, when I bring about your destruction among the nations, in countries you do not know.
The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of
hell with them that help him: they are gone down, they lie
uncircumcised, slain by the sword.
Mighty chiefs will speak from the midst of
Sheol about Egypt and her allies: ‘They have come down and lie with the
uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword.’
Asshur is there and all her company: his graves are about him: all of them slain, fallen by the sword:
Assyria is there with her whole company; her graves are all around her. All of them are slain, fallen by the sword.
Whose graves are set in the sides of the pit, and her company is round about her grave: all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which caused terror in the land of the living.
Her graves are set in the depths of the Pit, and her company is all around her grave. All of them are slain, fallen by the sword— those who once spread terror in the land of the living.
There is
Elam and all her multitude round
about her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which are gone down
uncircumcised into the
nether parts of the earth, which caused their terror in the land of the living; yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit.
Elam is there with all her multitudes around her grave. All of them are slain, fallen by the sword— those who went down
uncircumcised to the earth below, who once spread their terror in the land of the living. They bear their disgrace with those who descend to the Pit.
They have set her a bed in the midst of the slain with all her multitude: her graves are round
about him: all of them
uncircumcised, slain by the sword: though their terror was caused in the land of the living, yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit: he is put in the midst of them that be slain.
Among the slain they prepare a resting place for
Elam with all her hordes, with her graves all around her. All of them are
uncircumcised, slain by the sword, although their terror was once spread in the land of the living. They bear their disgrace with those who descend to the Pit. They are placed among the slain.
There is
Meshech,
Tubal, and all her multitude: her graves are round
about him: all of them
uncircumcised, slain by the sword, though they caused their terror in the land of the living.
Meshech and
Tubal are there with all their multitudes, with their graves all around them. All of them are
uncircumcised, slain by the sword, because they spread their terror in the land of the living.
Ye stand upon your sword, ye work
abomination, and ye
defile every one his neighbour’s wife: and shall ye possess the land?
Then shall they know that I am the LORD, when I have laid the land most
desolate because of all their
abominations which they have committed.
Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I have made the land a
desolate waste because of all the
abominations they have committed.’
Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD.
As for you, son of man, your people are talking about you near the city walls and in the doorways of their houses. One speaks to another, each saying to his brother, ‘Come and hear the message that has come from the LORD!’
And I will make them and the places round about my hill a blessing; and I will cause the shower to come down in his season; there shall be showers of blessing.
I will make them and the places around My hill a blessing. I will send down showers in season—showers of blessing.
Therefore, ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord GOD; Thus saith the Lord GOD to the mountains, and to the hills, to the rivers, and to the valleys, to the
desolate wastes, and to the cities that are
forsaken, which became a prey and
derision to the residue of the heathen that are round
about;
therefore, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord GOD. This is what the Lord GOD says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys, to the
desolate ruins and abandoned cities, which have become a
spoil and a
mockery to the rest of the nations around you.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; I have lifted up mine hand, Surely the heathen that are about you, they shall bear their shame.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: I have
sworn with an
uplifted hand that surely the nations around you will
endure reproach of their own.
Then shall ye remember your own evil ways, and your doings that were not good, and shall
lothe yourselves in your own sight for your
iniquities and for your
abominations.
Then the heathen that are left round
about you shall know that I the LORD build the ruined places, and plant that that was
desolate: I the LORD have spoken it, and I will do it.
Then the nations around you that remain will know that I, the LORD, have rebuilt what was destroyed, and I have replanted what was
desolate. I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will do it.
And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry.
He led me all around among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, and indeed, they were very dry.
And when I
beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them
above: but there was no breath in them.
As I looked on, tendons appeared on them, flesh grew, and skin covered them; but there was no breath in them.
And behold a wall on the outside of the house round
about, and in the man’s hand a measuring reed of six cubits long by the
cubit and an hand breadth: so he measured the breadth of the building, one reed; and the height, one reed.
And I saw a wall surrounding the temple area. Now the length of the measuring rod in the man’s hand was six long cubits (each measuring a
cubit and a
handbreadth), and he measured the wall to be one rod thick and one rod high.
He made also posts of
threescore cubits, even unto the post of the court round
about the gate.
And there were narrow windows to the little chambers, and to their posts within the gate round about, and likewise to the arches: and windows were round about inward: and upon each post were palm trees.
The gate chambers and their side pillars had
beveled windows all around the inside of the
gateway. The
porticos also had windows all around on the inside. Each side
pillar was decorated with palm trees.
Then brought he me into the outward court, and, lo, there were chambers, and a
pavement made for the court round
about: thirty chambers were upon the
pavement.
Then he brought me into the outer court, and there were chambers and a
pavement laid out all around the court. Thirty chambers faced the
pavement,
And there were windows in it and in the arches thereof round about, like those windows: the length was fifty cubits, and the breadth five and twenty cubits.
Both the
gateway and its
portico had windows all around, like the other windows. It was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
And the little chambers thereof, and the posts thereof, and the arches thereof, according to these measures: and there were windows in it and in the arches thereof round about: it was fifty cubits long, and five and twenty cubits broad.
Its gate chambers, side pillars, and
portico had the same measurements as the others. Both the
gateway and its
portico had windows all around; it was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
And the arches round about were five and twenty cubits long, and five cubits broad.
(The
porticoes around the inner court were twenty-five cubits long and five cubits deep.)
And the little chambers thereof, and the posts thereof, and the arches thereof, were according to these measures: and there were windows therein and in the arches thereof round about: it was fifty cubits long, and five and twenty cubits broad.
Its gate chambers, side pillars, and
portico had the same measurements as the others. Both the
gateway and its
portico had windows all around. It was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
The little chambers thereof, the posts thereof, and the arches thereof, and the windows to it round about: the length was fifty cubits, and the breadth five and twenty cubits.
as did its gate chambers, side pillars, and
portico. It also had windows all around. It was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
And within were hooks, an hand broad, fastened round about: and upon the tables was the flesh of the offering.
The double-
pronged hooks, each a
handbreadth long, were fastened all around the inside of the room, and the flesh of the offering was to be placed on the tables.
After he measured the wall of the house, six cubits; and the breadth of every side chamber, four cubits, round about the house on every side.
Next he measured the wall of the temple to be six cubits thick, and the width of each side room around the temple was four cubits.
And the side chambers were three, one over another, and thirty in order; and they entered into the wall which was of the house for the side chambers round about, that they might have hold, but they had not hold in the wall of the house.
The side rooms were arranged one above another in three levels of thirty rooms each. There were ledges all around the wall of the temple to serve as supports for the side rooms, so that the supports would not be fastened into the wall of the temple itself.
And there was an
enlarging, and a winding
about still upward to the side chambers: for the winding
about of the house went still upward round
about the house: therefore the breadth of the house was still upward, and so increased from the lowest chamber to the highest by the midst.
The side rooms surrounding the temple
widened at each successive level, because the structure surrounding the temple ascended by stages corresponding to the narrowing of the temple wall as it rose upward. And so a
stairway went up from the lowest story to the highest, through the middle one.
I saw also the height of the house round about: the foundations of the side chambers were a full reed of six great cubits.
I saw that the temple had a raised base all around it, forming the foundation of the side rooms. It was the full length of a rod, six long cubits.
And between the chambers was the wideness of twenty cubits round about the house on every side.
and the outer chambers was twenty cubits wide all around the temple.
And the doors of the side chambers were toward the place that was left, one door toward the north, and another door toward the south: and the breadth of the place that was left was five cubits round about.
The side rooms opened into this area, with one entrance on the north and another on the south. The open area was five cubits wide all around.
Now the building that was before the separate place at the end toward the west was seventy cubits broad; and the wall of the building was five cubits thick round
about, and the length thereof
ninety cubits.
Now the building that faced the temple
courtyard on the west was seventy cubits wide, and the wall of the building was five cubits thick all around, with a length of
ninety cubits.
The door posts, and the narrow windows, and the
galleries round
about on their three stories, over against the door, cieled with wood round
about, and from the ground up to the windows, and the windows were covered;
as well as the thresholds and the
beveled windows and the
galleries all around with their three levels opposite the
threshold, were overlaid with wood on all sides. They were
paneled from the ground to the windows, and the windows were covered.
To that above the door, even unto the inner house, and without, and by all the wall round about within and without, by measure.
In the space above the outside of the entrance to the inner sanctuary on all the walls, spaced evenly around the inner and outer sanctuary,
So that the face of a man was toward the palm tree on the one side, and the face of a young lion toward the palm tree on the other side: it was made through all the house round about.
the face of a man was toward the palm tree on one side, and the face of a young lion was toward the palm tree on the other side. They were carved all the way around the temple.
From the ground unto above the door were cherubims and palm trees made, and on the wall of the temple.
Cherubim and palm trees were carved on the wall of the outer sanctuary from the floor to the space
above the entrance.
Now when he had made an end of measuring the inner house, he brought me forth toward the gate whose prospect is toward the east, and measured it round about.
Now when the man had finished measuring the interior of the temple area, he led me out by the gate that faced east, and he measured the area all around:
He measured the east side with the measuring reed, five hundred reeds, with the measuring reed round about.
With a measuring rod he measured the east side to be five hundred cubits long.
He measured the north side, five hundred reeds, with the measuring reed round about.
He measured the north side to be five hundred cubits long.
He turned about to the west side, and measured five hundred reeds with the measuring reed.
And he came around and measured the west side to be five hundred cubits long.
He measured it by the four sides: it had a wall round
about, five hundred reeds long, and five hundred broad, to make a separation between the sanctuary and the
profane place.
So he measured the area on all four sides. It had a wall all around, five hundred cubits long and five hundred cubits wide, to separate the holy from the common.
In their setting of their
threshold by my thresholds, and their post by my posts, and the wall between me and them, they have even
defiled my holy name by their
abominations that they have committed: wherefore I have consumed them in mine anger.
When they placed their
threshold next to My
threshold and their doorposts beside My doorposts, with only a wall between Me and them, they
defiled My holy name by the
abominations they committed. Therefore I have consumed them in My anger.
This is the law of the house; Upon the top of the mountain the whole limit thereof round about shall be most holy. Behold, this is the law of the house.
This is the law of the temple: All its surrounding territory on top of the mountain will be most holy.
Yes, this is the law of the temple.
And these are the measures of the altar after the cubits: The
cubit is a
cubit and an hand breadth; even the bottom shall be a
cubit, and the breadth a
cubit, and the border thereof by the edge thereof round
about shall be a span: and this shall be the higher place of the altar.
These are the measurements of the altar in long cubits (a
cubit and a
handbreadth): Its
gutter shall be a
cubit deep and a
cubit wide, with a
rim of one span around its edge. And this is the height of the altar:
And the settle shall be fourteen cubits long and fourteen broad in the four squares thereof; and the border
about it shall be half a
cubit; and the bottom thereof shall be a
cubit about; and his stairs shall look toward the east.
The
ledge shall also be square, fourteen cubits long and fourteen cubits wide, with a
rim of half a
cubit and a
gutter of a
cubit all around it. The steps of the altar shall face east.”
And thou shalt take of the blood thereof, and put it on the four horns of it, and on the four corners of the settle, and upon the border round
about: thus shalt thou
cleanse and
purge it.
You are to take some of its blood and put it on the four horns of the altar, on the four corners of the
ledge, and all around the
rim; thus you will
cleanse the altar and make
atonement for it.
And thou shalt say to the
rebellious, even to the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; O ye house of Israel, let it suffice you of all your
abominations,
Tell the
rebellious house of Israel that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I have had enough of all your
abominations, O house of Israel.
In that ye have brought into my sanctuary strangers,
uncircumcised in heart, and
uncircumcised in flesh, to be in my sanctuary, to
pollute it, even my house, when ye offer my bread, the fat and the blood, and they have broken my covenant because of all your
abominations.
In addition to all your other
abominations, you brought in foreigners
uncircumcised in both heart and flesh to occupy My sanctuary; you
defiled My temple when you offered My food—the fat and the blood; you broke My covenant.
And they shall not come near unto me, to do the office of a priest unto me, nor to come near to any of my holy things, in the most holy place: but they shall bear their shame, and their abominations which they have committed.
They must not approach Me to serve Me as priests or come near any of My holy things or the most holy things. They will bear the shame of the abominations they have committed.
Moreover, when ye shall divide by lot the land for inheritance, ye shall offer an
oblation unto the LORD, an holy portion of the land: the length shall be the length of five and twenty thousand reeds, and the breadth shall be ten thousand. This shall be holy in all the borders thereof round
about.
“When you divide the land by lot as an inheritance, you are to set aside a portion for the LORD, a holy portion of the land 25,000 cubits long and 20,000 cubits wide. This entire tract of land will be holy.
Of this there shall be for the sanctuary five hundred in length, with five hundred in breadth, square round about; and fifty cubits round about for the suburbs thereof.
Within this area there is to be a section for the sanctuary 500 cubits square, with 50 cubits around it for open land.
And there was a row of building round about in them, round about them four, and it was made with boiling places under the rows round about.
Around the inside of each of the four courts was a row of masonry with ovens built at the base of the walls on all sides.
Then brought he me out of the way of the gate northward, and led me about the way without unto the utter gate by the way that looketh eastward; and, behold, there ran out waters on the right side.
Next he brought me out through the north gate and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and there I saw the water
trickling out from the south side.
It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there.
The
perimeter of the city will be 18,000 cubits, and from that day on the name of the city will be: THE LORD IS THERE.”
And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.
In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king consulted them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom.
The king
cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon,
Whosoever shall read this writing, and
shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold
about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.
The king called out for the enchanters, astrologers, and diviners to be brought in, and he said to these wise men of Babylon, “
Whoever reads this inscription and tells me its interpretation will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around his neck, and he will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom.”
And I have heard of thee, that thou canst make interpretations, and
dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold
about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.
But I have heard
about you, that you are able to give interpretations and
solve difficult problems. Therefore, if you can read this inscription and give me its interpretation, you will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around your neck, and you will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom.”
Then commanded
Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold
about his neck, and made a
proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.
Then
Belshazzar gave the command, and they clothed Daniel in purple, placed a gold chain around his neck, and proclaimed him the third highest ruler in the kingdom.
And
Darius the Median took the kingdom, being
about threescore and two years old.
and
Darius the
Mede received the kingdom at the age of sixty-two.
Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.
Soon, by his extraordinary spirit, Daniel distinguished himself among the administrators and satraps. So the king
planned to set him over the whole kingdom.
Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king’s decree; Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask a petition of any God or man within thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.
So they approached the king and asked
about his royal decree: “Did you not sign a decree that for thirty days any man who petitions any god or man except you, O king, will be thrown into the den of lions?” The king replied, “According to the law of the Medes and Persians the order stands, and it cannot be
repealed.”
Then king
Darius wrote unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you.
Then King
Darius wrote to the people of every nation and language throughout the land: “May your prosperity
abound.
And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more
stout than his fellows.
I also wanted to know
about the ten horns on its head and the other horn that came up, before which three of them fell—the horn whose appearance was more imposing than the others, with eyes and with a mouth that spoke words of
arrogance.
And I Daniel
fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king’s business; and I was
astonished at the vision, but none understood it.
I, Daniel, was exhausted and lay ill for days. Then I got up and went about the king’s business. I was confounded by the vision; it was beyond understanding.
O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I
beseech thee, let thine anger and thy
fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the
iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are
about us.
O Lord, in keeping with all Your righteous acts, I pray that Your anger and wrath may turn away from Your city Jerusalem, Your holy mountain; for because of our sins and the
iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people are a reproach to all around us.
Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man
Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me
about the time of the evening
oblation.
while I was still praying,
Gabriel, the man I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight
about the time of the evening sacrifice.
And he shall
confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the
oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of
abominations he shall make it
desolate, even until the
consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the
desolate.
And he will
confirm a covenant with many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of the temple will come the
abomination that causes
desolation, until the decreed destruction is poured out upon him.”
And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood
trembling.
He said to me, “Daniel, you are a man who is highly precious. Consider carefully the words that I am
about to say to you. Stand up, for I have now been sent to you.” And when he had said this to me, I stood up
trembling.
And the king of the south shall be strong, and one of his princes; and he shall be strong above him, and have dominion; his dominion shall be a great dominion.
The king of the South will grow strong, but one of his commanders will grow even stronger and will rule his own kingdom with great authority.
And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall
pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the
abomination that maketh
desolate.
And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall
exalt himself, and
magnify himself
above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall
prosper till the
indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
Then the king will do as he pleases and will
exalt and
magnify himself
above every god, and he will speak
monstrous things against the God of gods. He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed, for what has been decreed must be accomplished.
Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall
magnify himself
above all.
He will show no regard for the gods of his fathers, nor for the one desired by women, nor for any other god, because he will
magnify himself
above them all.
And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?
One of them said to the man dressed in linen, who was
above the waters of the river, “How long until the
fulfillment of these wonders?”
And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and
sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to
scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.
And the man dressed in linen, who was
above the waters of the river, raised his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard him
swear by Him who lives
forever, saying, “It will be for a time, and times, and half a time. When the power of the holy people has finally been
shattered, all these things will be completed.”
And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the
abomination that maketh
desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and
ninety days.
And from the time the daily sacrifice is
abolished and the
abomination of
desolation set up, there will be 1,290 days.
And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, and with the
creeping things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely.
On that day I will make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field and the birds of the air and the creatures that
crawl on the ground. And I will
abolish bow and sword and weapons of war in the land, and will make them lie down in safety.
I know Ephraim, and Israel is not
hid from me: for now, O Ephraim, thou committest
whoredom, and Israel is
defiled.
I know all
about Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from Me. For now, O Ephraim, you have turned to
prostitution; Israel is
defiled.
And they consider not in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness: now their own doings have
beset them
about; they are before my face.
But they fail to consider in their hearts that I remember all their evil. Now their deeds are all around them; they are before My face.
I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the firstripe in the fig tree at her first time: but they went to
Baal-peor, and separated themselves unto that shame; and their
abominations were according as they loved.
I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your fathers as the firstfruits of the fig tree in its first season. But they went to
Baal-peor, and consecrated themselves to Shame; so they became as
detestable as the thing they loved.
Ephraim compasseth me
about with lies, and the house of Israel with
deceit: but Judah yet ruleth with God, and is faithful with the saints.
Ephraim surrounds Me with lies, the house of Israel with
deceit; but Judah still walks with God and is faithful to the Holy One.
And
rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is
gracious and
merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.
So
rend your hearts and not your garments, and return to the LORD your God. For He is
gracious and
compassionate, slow to anger,
abounding in loving devotion. And He relents from sending
disaster.
Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather
yourselves together round
about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD.
Come quickly, all you surrounding nations, and gather
yourselves. Bring down Your mighty ones, O LORD.
Let the heathen be
wakened, and come up to the valley of
Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round
about.
Let the nations be
roused and advance to the Valley of
Jehoshaphat, for there I will sit down to judge all the nations on every side.
Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.
Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them, though his height was like that of the cedars, and he was as strong as the oaks. Yet I destroyed his fruit above and his roots below.
Behold, I am pressed under you, as a
cart is pressed that is full of
sheaves.
Behold, I am
about to
crush you in your place as with a
cart full of grain.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; An
adversary there shall be even round
about the land; and he shall bring down thy strength from thee, and thy palaces shall be
spoiled.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: “An enemy will
surround the land; he will pull down your strongholds and
plunder your citadels.”
The vision of
Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning
Edom; We have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the heathen, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.
This is the vision of
Obadiah: This is what the Lord GOD says
about Edom— We have heard a message from the LORD; an
envoy has been sent among the nations to say, “Rise up, and let us go to battle against her!”—
But
Jonah rose up to
flee unto
Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to
Joppa; and he found a ship going to
Tarshish: so he paid the
fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto
Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current
swirled about me; all Your breakers and waves swept over me.
The waters compassed me
about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round
about, the weeds were
wrapped about my head.
I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.
To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me
barred me in
forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God!
And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto
Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a
gracious God, and
merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.
So he prayed to the LORD, saying, “O LORD, is this not what I said while I was still in my own country? This is why I was so quick to
flee toward
Tarshish. I knew that You are a
gracious and
compassionate God, slow to anger,
abounding in loving devotion—One who relents from sending
disaster.
And God said to
Jonah, Doest thou well to be
angry for the
gourd? And he said, I do well to be
angry, even unto death.
Then God asked
Jonah, “Have you any right to be
angry about the plant?” “I do,” he replied. “I am
angry enough to die!”
Then said the LORD, Thou hast had
pity on the
gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:
But the LORD said, “You cared
about the plant, which you neither tended nor made grow. It
sprang up in a night and perished in a night.
And should not I
spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than
sixscore thousand persons that cannot
discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
So should I not care
about the great city of
Nineveh, which has more than 120,000 people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well?”
