But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of testimony.
But the Levites are to camp around the tabernacle of the Testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath will fall on the congregation of Israel. So the Levites are responsible for the tabernacle of the Testimony.”
Every man of the children of Israel shall pitch by his own standard, with the
ensign of their father’s house: far off
about the tabernacle of the congregation shall they pitch.
“The Israelites are to camp around the Tent of Meeting at a distance from it, each man under his standard, with the banners of his family.
And the hangings of the court, and the
curtain for the door of the court, which is by the tabernacle, and by the altar round
about, and the cords of it for all the service thereof.
the curtains of the
courtyard, the
curtain for the entrance to the
courtyard that surrounds the tabernacle and altar, and the cords—all the service for these items.
And the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords.
as well as the posts of the surrounding
courtyard with their bases, tent pegs, and ropes.
This shall be the service of the sons of
Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation,
about the most holy things:
This service of the Kohathites at the Tent of Meeting regards the most holy things.
And they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof,
wherewith they minister
about it, even the censers, the fleshhooks, and the shovels, and the basons, all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of badgers skins, and put to the
staves of it.
and place on it all the vessels used to serve there: the firepans, meat forks, shovels, and
sprinkling bowls—all the
equipment of the altar. They are to spread over it a covering of fine leather and
insert the poles.
And the hangings of the court, and the hanging for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and all that is made for them: so shall they serve.
the curtains of the
courtyard, and the curtains for the entrance at the gate of the
courtyard that surrounds the tabernacle and altar, along with their ropes and all the
equipment for their service. The Gershonites will do all that needs to be done with these items.
And the pillars of the court round
about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service: and by name ye shall
reckon the instruments of the charge of their burden.
and the posts of the surrounding
courtyard with their bases, tent pegs, and ropes, including all their
equipment and everything related to their use. You shall
assign by name the items that they are responsible to carry.
And when the people
complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was
kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the
uttermost parts of the camp.
Soon the people began to
complain about their
hardship in the hearing of the LORD, and when He heard them, His anger was
kindled, and fire from the LORD
blazed among them and consumed the outskirts of the camp.
And the people went
about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and
baked it in pans, and made cakes of it: and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil.
The people walked around and gathered it, ground it on a
handmill or
crushed it in a mortar, then boiled it in a
cooking pot or shaped it into cakes. It tasted like
pastry baked with fine oil.
And Moses went out, and told the people the words of the LORD, and gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the tabernacle.
So Moses went out and relayed to the people the words of the LORD, and he gathered seventy of the elders of the people and had them stand around the tent.
And there went forth a wind from the LORD, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, as it were a day’s journey on this side, and as it were a day’s journey on the other side, round about the camp, and as it were two cubits high upon the face of the earth.
Now a wind sent by the LORD came up, drove in
quail from the sea, and brought them near the camp,
about two cubits above the surface of the ground, for a day’s journey in every direction around the camp.
And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.
All that day and night, and all the next day, the people stayed up gathering the
quail. No one gathered less than ten homers, and they spread them out all around the camp.
And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great
stature.
So they gave the Israelites a bad report
about the land that they had
spied out: “The land we
explored devours its inhabitants, and all the people we saw there are great in
stature.
And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to
murmur against him, by bringing up a
slander upon the land,
So the men Moses had sent to
spy out the land, who had returned and made the whole congregation
grumble against him by bringing out a bad report
about the land—
Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the LORD.
those men who had brought out the bad report about the land—were struck down by a plague before the LORD.
Speak unto the congregation, saying, Get you up from
about the tabernacle of
Korah, Dathan, and
Abiram.
“Tell the congregation to move away from the dwellings of
Korah, Dathan, and
Abiram.”
But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and
swallow them up, with all that
appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have
provoked the LORD.
But if the LORD brings
about something
unprecedented, and the earth opens its mouth and
swallows them and all that belongs to them so that they go down alive into
Sheol, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt.”
And all Israel that were round
about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth
swallow us up also.
At their
cries, all the people of Israel who were around them fled, saying, “The earth may
swallow us too!”
Now they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, beside them that died
about the matter of
Korah.
But those who died from the plague numbered 14,700, in addition to those who had died on account of
Korah.
And Moab said unto the elders of
Midian, Now shall this company
lick up all that are round
about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.
So the Moabites said to the elders of
Midian, “This
horde will
devour everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.” Since Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time,
And her father hear her
vow, and her bond
wherewith she hath bound her soul, and her father shall hold his peace at her: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond
wherewith she hath bound her soul shall stand.
and her father hears
about her
vow or
pledge but says nothing to her, then all the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand.
But if her father disallow her in the day that he heareth; not any of her vows, or of her bonds
wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand: and the LORD shall
forgive her, because her father disallowed her.
But if her father prohibits her on the day he hears
about it, then none of the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand. The LORD will
absolve her because her father has prohibited her.
But if her husband altogether hold his peace at her from day to day; then he establisheth all her vows, or all her bonds, which are upon her: he confirmeth them, because he held his peace at her in the day that he heard them.
But if her husband says nothing to her from day to day, then he confirms all the vows and pledges that bind her. He has confirmed them, because he said nothing to her on the day he heard about them.
So concerning them Moses commanded
Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of
Nun, and the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel:
So Moses gave orders
about them to
Eleazar the priest, to Joshua son of
Nun, and to the family leaders of the tribes of Israel.
And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of
Gad, and to the children of
Reuben, and unto half the tribe of
Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the
Amorites, and the kingdom of
Og king of
Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round
about.
So Moses gave to the Gadites, to the Reubenites, and to the half-tribe of
Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the
Amorites and the kingdom of
Og king of
Bashan—the land including its cities and the territory surrounding them.
And the border shall go down to Jordan, and the goings out of it shall be at the salt sea: this shall be your land with the coasts thereof round about.
Then the border will go down along the Jordan and end at the Salt Sea. This will be your land, defined by its borders on all sides.”
Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them.
“Command the Israelites to give, from the inheritance they will possess, cities for the Levites to live in and pasturelands around the cities.
And the suburbs of the cities, which ye shall give unto the Levites, shall reach from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about.
The pasturelands around the cities you are to give the Levites will extend a thousand cubits from the wall on every side.
And I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, Thine eyes have seen all that the LORD your God hath done unto these two kings: so shall the LORD do unto all the kingdoms
whither thou passest.
And at that time I commanded Joshua: “Your own eyes have seen all that the LORD your God has done to these two kings. The LORD will do the same to all the kingdoms you are about to enter.
But the LORD was
wroth with me for your sakes, and would not hear me: and the LORD said unto me, Let it suffice thee; speak no more unto me of this matter.
But the LORD was
angry with me on account of you, and He would not
listen to me. “That is enough,” the LORD said to me. “Do not speak to Me again
about this matter.
Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land
whither ye go to possess it.
See, I have taught you statutes and ordinances just as the LORD my God has commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land that you are about to enter and possess.
For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?
Indeed, ask now from one end of the heavens to the other about the days that long preceded you, from the day that God created man on earth: Has anything as great as this ever happened or been reported?
Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land
whither ye go to possess it:
These are the commandments and statutes and ordinances that the LORD your God has
instructed me to teach you to follow in the land that you are
about to enter and possess,
Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you;
Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you.
Hear, O Israel: Thou art to pass over Jordan this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than
thyself, cities great and
fenced up to heaven,
Hear, O Israel:
Today you are
about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities fortified to the heavens.
A people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of
Anak!
The people are strong and tall, the descendants of the
Anakim. You know
about them, and you have heard it said, “Who can stand up to the sons of
Anak?”
And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
Teach them to your children, speaking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
For ye shall pass over Jordan to go in to possess the land which the LORD your God giveth you, and ye shall possess it, and dwell therein.
For you are about to cross the Jordan to enter and possess the land that the LORD your God is giving you. When you take possession of it and settle in it,
But when ye go over Jordan, and dwell in the land which the LORD your God giveth you to
inherit, and when he giveth you rest from all your enemies round
about, so that ye dwell in safety;
When you cross the Jordan and live in the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, and He gives you rest from all the enemies around you and you dwell securely,
Take
heed to
thyself that thou be not
snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou
enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.
be careful not to be ensnared by their ways after they have been destroyed before you. Do not inquire about their gods, asking, “How do these nations serve their gods? I will do likewise.”
And the sign or the wonder come to pass,
whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;
and if the sign or wonder he has spoken to you comes about, but he says, “Let us follow other gods (which you have not known) and let us worship them,”
Namely, of the gods of the people which are round
about you,
nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth;
the gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, whether from one end of the earth or the other),
And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and enquired
diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such
abomination is wrought in Israel:
and if it is reported and you hear
about it, you must
investigate it thoroughly. If the report is true and such an
abomination has happened in Israel,
When thou art come unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me;
When you enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you and have taken possession of it and settled in it, and you say, “Let us set a king over us like all the nations around us,”
And it shall be, when ye are come
nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,
When you are about to go into battle, the priest is to come forward and address the army,
Then thy elders and thy judges shall come forth, and they shall measure unto the cities which are round about him that is slain:
your elders and judges must come out and measure the distance from the
victim to the
neighboring cities.
Therefore it shall be, when the LORD thy God hath given thee rest from all thine enemies round
about, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt
blot out the
remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not
forget it.
When the LORD your God gives you rest from the enemies around you in the land that He is giving you to possess as an inheritance, you are to
blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven. Do not
forget!
and at
noon you will
grope about like a blind man in the darkness. You will not
prosper in your ways. Day after day you will be
oppressed and
plundered, with no one to save you.
And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are
befallen them, that this song shall
testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed: for I know their imagination which they go
about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I
sware.
And when many troubles and afflictions have come upon them, this song will
testify against them, because it will not be forgotten from the lips of their descendants. For I know their inclination, even before I bring them into the land that I
swore to give them.”
He found him in a desert land, and in the waste
howling wilderness; he led him
about, he
instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.
He found him in a desert land, in a barren,
howling wilderness; He surrounded him, He
instructed him, He guarded him as the apple of His eye.
And it came to pass
about the time of
shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out:
whither the men went I
wot not: pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them.
At
dusk, when the gate was
about to close, the men went out, and I do not know which way they went. Pursue them quickly, and you may catch them!”
Yet there shall be a space between you and it,
about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way
heretofore.
But keep a distance of
about two thousand cubits between
yourselves and the ark. Do not go near it, so that you can see the way to go, since you have never traveled this way before.”
About forty thousand prepared for war passed over before the LORD unto battle, to the plains of
Jericho.
About 40,000 troops armed for battle crossed over before the LORD into the plains of
Jericho.
And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.
March around the city with all the men of war, circling the city one time. Do this for six days.
So the ark of the LORD compassed the city, going
about it once: and they came into the camp, and
lodged in the camp.
So he had the ark of the LORD carried around the city, circling it once. And the people returned to the camp and spent the night there.
And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early
about the
dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times.
Then on the seventh day, they got up at
dawn and marched around the city seven times in the same manner. That was the only day they circled the city seven times.
And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let
about two or three thousand men go up and
smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.
On returning to Joshua, they reported, “There is no need to send all the people; two or three thousand men are enough to go up and attack
Ai. Since the people of
Ai are so few, you need not wear out all our people there.”
So there went up thither of the people
about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of
Ai.
So
about three thousand men went up, but they fled before the men of
Ai.
And the men of
Ai smote of them
about thirty and six men: for they
chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and
smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.
And the men of
Ai struck down
about thirty-six of them,
chasing them from the gate as far as the
quarries and striking them down on the slopes. So the hearts of the people melted and became like water.
For the
Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall
environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what
wilt thou do unto thy great name?
When the
Canaanites and all who live in the land hear
about this, they will
surround us and
wipe out our name from the earth. Then what will You do for Your great name?”
And he took
about five thousand men, and set them to lie in
ambush between
Bethel and
Ai, on the west side of the city.
Now Joshua had taken
about five thousand men and set up an
ambush between
Bethel and
Ai, to the west of the city.
And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,
“Your servants have come from a very distant land,” they replied, “because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard the reports about Him: all that He did in Egypt,
And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had
avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down
about a whole day.
So the sun stood still and the moon stopped until the nation took
vengeance upon its enemies. Is this not written in the Book of
Jashar? “So the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down
about a full day.”
And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,
Now when Jabin king of Hazor heard about these things, he sent word to Jobab king of Madon; to the kings of Shimron and Achshaph;
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to
morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt
hough their horses, and burn their
chariots with fire.
Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for by this time
tomorrow I will deliver all of them slain before Israel. You are to
hamstring their horses and burn up their
chariots.”
Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in
Gilgal: and
Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that the LORD said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadesh-barnea.
Then the sons of Judah approached Joshua at
Gilgal, and
Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh-barnea
about you and me.
And the west border was to the great sea, and the coast thereof. This is the coast of the children of Judah round about according to their families.
And the western border was the coastline of the Great Sea. These are the boundaries around the clans of the descendants of Judah.
And the border went out toward the sea to Michmethah on the north side; and the border went
about eastward unto Taanath-
shiloh, and passed by it on the east to Janohah;
and out toward the Sea. From Michmethath on the north it turned eastward toward Taanath-
shiloh and passed by it to Janoah on the east.
And Jordan was the border of it on the east side. This was the inheritance of the children of Benjamin, by the coasts thereof round about, according to their families.
On the east side the border was the Jordan. These were the borders around the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Benjamin.
And all the villages that were round
about these cities to Baalath-beer, Ramath of the south. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of
Simeon according to their families.
and all the villages surrounding these cities as far as Baalath-beer (
Ramah of the Negev). This was the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of
Simeon.
And they gave them the city of Arba the father of
Anak, which city is
Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with the suburbs thereof round
about it.
They gave them Kiriath-arba (that is,
Hebron), with its surrounding pasturelands, in the hill country of Judah. (Arba was the father of
Anak.)
These cities were every one with their suburbs round about them: thus were all these cities.
Each of these cities had its own surrounding pasturelands; this was true for all the cities.
And the LORD gave them rest round
about, according to all that he
sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.
And the LORD gave them rest on every side, just as He had
sworn to their fathers. None of their enemies could stand against them, for the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.
And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of
Reuben and
Gad dwelt.
The Israelites were satisfied with the report, and they blessed God and spoke no more about going to war against them to destroy the land where the Reubenites and Gadites lived.
And it came to pass a long time after that the LORD had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round
about, that Joshua waxed old and
stricken in age.
A long time after the LORD had given Israel rest from all the enemies around them, when Joshua was old and well along in years,
And they
forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round
about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and
provoked the LORD to anger.
Thus they
forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they followed after various gods of the peoples around them. They bowed down to them and
provoked the LORD to anger,
And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that
spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round
about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.
Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He delivered them into the hands of those who
plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist.
And they
slew of Moab at that time
about ten thousand men, all
lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.
At that time they struck down
about ten thousand Moabites, all
robust and
valiant men. Not one of them escaped.
And when
Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a
cake of barley bread
tumbled into the host of
Midian, and came unto a tent, and
smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along.
And as
Gideon arrived, a man was telling his friend
about a dream. “Behold, I had a dream,” he said, “and I saw a
loaf of barley bread come
tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent so hard that the tent overturned and
collapsed.”
And they stood every man in his place round
about the camp: and all the host ran, and
cried, and fled.
Each
Israelite took his position around the camp, and the entire Midianite army fled, crying out as they ran.
Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.
Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their army of
about fifteen thousand men—all that were left of the armies of the people of the east. A hundred and twenty thousand
swordsmen had already fallen.
And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did
upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are
weary?
And
Gideon went to the men of Succoth and said, “Here are Zebah and Zalmunna,
about whom you
taunted me, saying, ‘Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your possession, that we should give bread to your
weary men?’”
And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple
raiment that was on the kings of
Midian, and beside the chains that were
about their camels’ necks.
The weight of the gold earrings he had requested was 1,700 shekels, in addition to the
crescent ornaments, the pendants, the purple garments of the kings of
Midian, and the chains from the necks of their camels.
And his mother’s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of
Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow
Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.
And when his mother’s brothers spoke all these words
about him in the presence of all the leaders of
Shechem, their hearts were inclined to follow
Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.”
And all the people likewise cut down every man his
bough, and followed
Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of
Shechem died also,
about a thousand men and women.
So each man also cut his own branch and followed
Abimelech. Then they piled the branches against the inner chamber and set it on fire above them, killing
everyone in the tower of
Shechem,
about a thousand men and women.
Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof
about three thousand men and women, that
beheld while
Samson made
sport.
Now the temple was full of men and women; all the lords of the Philistines were there, and
about three thousand men and women were on the roof watching
Samson entertain them.
And he said unto his mother, The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from thee, about which thou cursedst, and spakest of also in mine ears, behold, the silver is with me; I took it. And his mother said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my son.
said to his mother, “The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from you and
about which I heard you utter a
curse—I have the silver here with me; I took it.” Then his mother said, “Blessed be my son by the LORD!”
Then answered the five men that went to
spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an
ephod, and
teraphim, and a
graven image, and a
molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.
Then the five men who had gone to
spy out the land of Laish said to their brothers, “Did you know that one of these houses has an
ephod, household gods, a
graven image, and a
molten idol? Now think
about what you should do.”
Now as they were making their hearts
merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of
Belial,
beset the house round
about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.
While they were enjoying themselves, suddenly the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they said to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house, so we can have relations with him!”
And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and
beset the house round
about upon me by night, and thought to have slain me: and my
concubine have they forced, that she is dead.
And during the night, the men of Gibeah rose up against me and surrounded the house. They intended to kill me, but they
abused my
concubine, and she died.
And Israel set liers in wait round about Gibeah.
So Israel set up an
ambush around Gibeah.
And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to
smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the
highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field,
about thirty men of Israel.
The Benjamites came out against them and were drawn away from the city. They began to attack the people as before, killing
about thirty men of Israel in the fields and on the roads, one of which led up to
Bethel and the other to Gibeah.
And when the men of Israel retired in the battle, Benjamin began to
smite and kill of the men of Israel
about thirty persons: for they said, Surely they are
smitten down before us, as in the first battle.
the men of Israel would turn in the battle. When the Benjamites had begun to strike them down, killing about thirty men of Israel, they said, “They are defeated before us as in the first battle.”
Thus they inclosed the Benjamites round
about, and
chased them, and

sunrising.
They surrounded the Benjamites, pursued them, and easily overtook them in the vicinity of Gibeah on the east.

Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?
Then the elders of the congregation said, “What should we do about wives for those who remain, since the women of Benjamin have been destroyed?”
And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other
Ruth: and they dwelled there
about ten years.
who took
Moabite women as their wives, one named Orpah and the other named
Ruth. And after they had lived in Moab
about ten years,
So they two went until they came to
Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to
Bethlehem, that all the city was moved
about them, and they said, Is this
Naomi?
So she
gleaned in the field until even, and beat out that she had
gleaned: and it was
about an
ephah of barley.
So
Ruth gathered grain in the field until evening. And when she beat out what she had
gleaned, it was
about an
ephah of barley.
