Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come
about after
Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.
So in the course of time,
Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the LORD.”
Now
Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Now
Eli was very old, and he heard
about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they were sleeping with the women who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.
“Why are you doing these things?”
Eli said to his sons. “I hear
about your wicked deeds from all these people.
And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall
tingle.
Then the LORD said to Samuel, “I am
about to do something in Israel at which the ears of all who hear it will
tingle.
In that day I will perform against
Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.
On that day I will carry out against
Eli everything I have spoken
about his family, from beginning to end.
And the Philistines put themselves in
array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was
smitten before the Philistines: and they
slew of the army in the field
about four thousand men.
The Philistines
arrayed themselves against Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who struck down
about four thousand men on the battlefield.
And his daughter in law,
Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the
tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and
travailed; for her pains came upon her.
Now
Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of
Phinehas, was
pregnant and
about to give birth. When she heard the news of the capture of God’s ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she
collapsed and gave birth, for her labor pains overtook her.
And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.
As she was dying, the women attending to her said, “Do not be afraid, for you have given birth to a son!” But she did not
respond or pay any
heed.
They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried
about unto
Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel
about thither.
So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and asked, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” “It must be moved to
Gath,” they replied. So they carried away the ark of the God of Israel.
And it was so, that, after they had carried it
about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction: and he
smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had
emerods in their secret parts.
But after they had moved the ark to
Gath, the LORD’s hand was also against that city, throwing it into great confusion and
afflicting the men of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.
Therefore they sent the ark of God to
Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to
Ekron, that the Ekronites
cried out, saying, They have brought
about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to
slay us and our people.
So they sent the ark of God to
Ekron, but as it arrived, the Ekronites
cried out, “They have brought us the ark of the God of Israel in order to kill us and our people!”
And when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let us return; lest my father leave caring for the
asses, and take thought for us.
When they reached the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant, “Come, let us go back, or my father will stop
worrying about the
donkeys and start
worrying about us.”
As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall
straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he come, because he
doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be
bidden. Now therefore get you up; for
about this time ye shall find him.
As soon as you enter the city, you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. The people will not eat until he comes, because he must
bless the sacrifice; after that, the guests will eat. Go up at once; you will find him.”
To
morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt
anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.
“At this time
tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you are to
anoint him leader over My people Israel; he will save them from the hand of the Philistines. For I have looked upon My people, because their cry has come to Me.”
And as for thine
asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father’s house?
As for the
donkeys you lost three days ago, do not
worry about them, for they have been found. And upon whom is all the desire of Israel, if not upon you and all your father’s house?”
And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were
bidden, which were
about thirty persons.
Then Samuel took Saul and his servant, brought them into the hall, and seated them in the place of honor among those who were invited—about thirty in all.
And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.
They got up early in the morning, and just before
dawn Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Get ready, and I will send you on your way!” So Saul arose, and both he and Samuel went outside together.
When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by
Rachel’s
sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The
asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the
asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?
When you leave me
today, you will find two men at
Rachel’s tomb in Zelzah on the border of Benjamin. They will say to you, ‘The
donkeys you seek have been found, and now your father has stopped
worrying about the
donkeys and started
worrying about you, asking, “What should I do
about my son?”’
And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the
asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom,
whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.
And Saul replied, “He
assured us that the
donkeys had been found.” But Saul did not tell his uncle what Samuel had said
about the
kingship.
But the children of
Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they
despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.
But some worthless men said, “How can this man save us?” So they
despised him and brought him no gifts; but Saul remained silent
about it.
And
Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul
blew the
trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.
Then
Jonathan attacked the
Philistine outpost at Geba, and the Philistines heard
about it. So Saul
blew the ram’s horn throughout the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear!”
And Samuel arose, and
gat him up from
Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him,
about six hundred men.
Then Samuel set out from
Gilgal and went up to Gibeah in Benjamin. And Saul numbered the troops who were with him,
about six hundred men.
And Saul
tarried in the
uttermost part of Gibeah under a
pomegranate tree which is in Migron: and the people that were with him were
about six hundred men;
Meanwhile, Saul was staying under the
pomegranate tree in Migron on the outskirts of Gibeah. And the troops who were with him numbered
about six hundred men,
And that first slaughter, which
Jonathan and his armourbearer made, was
about twenty men, within as it were an half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might
plow.
In that first
assault,
Jonathan and his
armor-bearer struck down
about twenty men over half an acre of land.
Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round
about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and
Jonathan.
And the Hebrews who had previously gone up into the surrounding camps of the Philistines now went over to the Israelites who were with Saul and
Jonathan.
And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to
Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone
about, and passed on, and gone down to
Gilgal.
Early in the morning Samuel got up to
confront Saul, but he was told, “Saul has gone to
Carmel, and behold, he has set up a monument for himself and has turned and gone down to
Gilgal.”
And as Samuel turned
about to go away, he laid hold upon the
skirt of his
mantle, and it rent.
And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.
The people told him about the offer, saying, “That is what will be done for the man who kills him.”
And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.
Then he turned from him toward another and asked about the offer, and those people answered him just as the first ones had answered.
And when the
Philistine looked
about, and saw David, he
disdained him: for he was but a youth, and
ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where thou art, and I will commune with my father of thee; and what I see, that I will tell thee.
I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, so I can ask about you. And if I find out anything, I will tell you.”
And
Jonathan said unto David, O LORD God of Israel, when I have sounded my father
about to
morrow any time, or the third day, and, behold, if there be good toward David, and I then send not unto thee, and
shew it thee;
and
Jonathan said, “By the LORD, the God of Israel, I will sound out my father by this time
tomorrow or the next day. If he is favorable toward you, will I not send for you and tell you?
And David said unto
Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business
whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.
“The king has given me a mission,” David replied. “He told me no one is to know about the mission or charge. And I have directed my young men to meet me at a certain place.
And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us
about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common,
yea, though it were
sanctified this day in the vessel.
David answered, “Women have indeed been kept from us, as is usual when I set out. And the
equipment of the young men is holy, as it is even on common missions, and all the more at this time.”
And the servants of Achish said unto him, Is not this David the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?
But the servants of Achish said to him, “Is this not David, the king of the land? Did they not sing about him in their dances, saying: ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands’?”
David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave
Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father’s house heard it, they went down thither to him.
So David left
Gath and took refuge in the cave of
Adullam. When his brothers and the rest of his father’s household heard
about it, they went down to him there.
And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.
And all who were distressed or indebted or discontented
rallied around him, and he became their leader.
About four hundred men were with him.
When Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men that were with him, (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in
Ramah, having his
spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing
about him;)
Soon Saul learned that David and his men had been discovered. At that time Saul was in Gibeah, sitting under the
tamarisk tree on the hill at Gibeah, with his
spear in hand and all his servants standing around him.
Then Saul said unto his servants that stood
about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of
Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds;
Then Saul said to his servants, “
Listen, men of Benjamin! Is the son of
Jesse giving all of you fields and vineyards and making you commanders of thousands or hundreds?
And the king said unto the
footmen that stood
about him, Turn, and
slay the priests of the LORD; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not
shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the LORD.
Then the king ordered the guards at his side, “Turn and kill the priests of the LORD, because they too sided with David. For they knew he was
fleeing, but they did not tell me.” But the king’s servants would not lift a hand to strike the priests of the LORD.
Then David and his men, which were
about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah, and went
whithersoever they could go. And it was told Saul that David was escaped from Keilah; and he
forbare to go forth.
Then David and his men, about six hundred strong, set out and departed from Keilah, moving from place to place. When Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah, he declined to go forth.
Saul also and his men went to seek him. And they told David: wherefore he came down into a rock, and abode in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.
and Saul and his men went to seek him. When David was told about it, he went down to the rock and stayed in the Wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard of this, he pursued David there.
And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain: and David made
haste to get away for fear of Saul; for Saul and his men compassed David and his men round
about to take them.
Saul was proceeding along one side of the mountain, and David and his men along the other side. Even though David was
hurrying to get away, Saul and his men were closing in on David and his men to capture them.
And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the
skirt of Saul’s
robe privily.
So David’s men said to him, “This is the day
about which the LORD said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do with him as you wish.’” Then David
crept up secretly and cut off a corner of Saul’s
robe.
And David said unto his men,
Gird ye on every man his sword. And they
girded on every man his sword; and David also
girded on his sword: and there went up after David
about four hundred men; and two hundred abode by the stuff.
And David said to his men, “
Strap on your swords!” So David and all his men put on their swords, and
about four hundred men followed David, while two hundred stayed with the supplies.
But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.
In the morning when Nabal was
sober, his wife told him
about these events, and his heart failed within him and he became like a stone.
And it came to pass
about ten days after, that the LORD
smote Nabal, that he died.
About ten days later, the LORD struck Nabal dead.
And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had pitched: and David
beheld the place where Saul lay, and
Abner the son of
Ner, the captain of his host: and Saul lay in the
trench, and the people pitched round
about him.
Then David set out and went to the place where Saul had camped. He saw the place where Saul and
Abner son of
Ner, the general of his army, had
lain down. Saul was lying inside the inner circle of the camp, with the troops camped around him.
So David and
Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the
trench, and his
spear stuck in the ground at his
bolster: but
Abner and the people lay round
about him.
That night David and
Abishai came to the troops, and Saul was lying there
asleep in the inner circle of the camp, with his
spear stuck in the ground by his head. And
Abner and the troops were lying around him.
So David took the
spear and the
cruse of water from Saul’s
bolster; and they
gat them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither
awaked: for they were all
asleep; because a deep sleep from the LORD was fallen upon them.
So David took the
spear and water
jug by Saul’s head, and they departed. No one saw them or knew
about it, nor did
anyone wake up; they all remained
asleep, because a deep sleep from the LORD had fallen on them.
Then said the princes of the Philistines, What do these Hebrews here? And Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, which hath been with me these days, or these years, and I have found no fault in him since he fell unto me unto this day?
Then the commanders of the Philistines asked, “What
about these Hebrews?” Achish replied, “Is this not David, the servant of King Saul of Israel? He has been with me all these days, even years, and from the day he defected until
today I have found no fault in him.”
Is not this David, of whom they
sang one to another in dances, saying, Saul
slew his thousands, and David his ten thousands?
Is this not the David about whom they sing in their dances: ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands’?”
And they cut off his head, and
stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round
about, to
publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.
They cut off Saul’s head,
stripped off his
armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to
proclaim the news in the temples of their idols and among their people.
And
Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? saying also, Make thy league with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with thee, to bring
about all Israel unto thee.
Then
Abner sent messengers in his place to say to David, “To whom does the land belong? Make your covenant with me, and surely my hand will be with you to bring all Israel over to you.”
And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD for ever from the blood of
Abner the son of
Ner:
Afterward, David heard
about this and said, “I and my kingdom are
forever guiltless before the LORD concerning the blood of
Abner son of
Ner.
And
Jonathan, Saul’s son, had a son that was
lame of his feet. He was five years old when the
tidings came of Saul and
Jonathan out of
Jezreel, and his
nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made
haste to
flee, that he fell, and became
lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.
And
Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was
lame in his feet. He was five years old when the report
about Saul and
Jonathan came from
Jezreel. His
nurse picked him up and fled, but as she was
hurrying to escape, he fell and became
lame. His name was Mephibosheth.
And the sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came
about the heat of the day to the house of
Ish-bosheth, who lay on a bed at
noon.
Now Rechab and Baanah, the sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite, set out and arrived at the house of
Ish-bosheth in the heat of the day, while the king was taking his
midday nap.
So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built round
about from
Millo and inward.
So David took up residence in the fortress and called it the City of David. He built it up all the way around, from the supporting terraces inward.
And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the LORD had given him rest round about from all his enemies;
After the king had settled into his palace and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him,
Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.
For I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt until this day, but I have moved about with a tent as My dwelling.
And this was yet a small thing in thy sight, O Lord GOD; but thou hast spoken also of thy servant’s house for a great while to come. And is this the manner of man, O Lord GOD?
And as if this was a small thing in Your eyes, O Lord GOD, You have also spoken about the future of the house of Your servant. Is this Your custom with man, O Lord GOD?
And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-
sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
So David sent and inquired about the woman, and he was told, “This is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.”
To
fetch about this form of speech hath thy servant
Joab done this thing: and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.
Joab your servant has done this to bring
about this change of affairs, but my lord has wisdom like the wisdom of the angel of God, to know everything that happens in the land.”
And with
Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were called; and they went in their simplicity, and they knew not any thing.
Two hundred men from Jerusalem accompanied
Absalom. They had been invited as guests and they went along innocently, for they knew nothing
about the matter.
And ten young men who carried
Joab’s
armor surrounded
Absalom, struck him, and killed him.
And
Absalom, whom we
anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why speak ye not a word of bringing the king back?
But
Absalom, the man we
anointed over us, has died in battle. So why do you say nothing
about restoring the king?”
And Ira also the Jairite was a chief ruler about David.
and Ira the Jairite was David’s priest.
The sorrows of
hell compassed me
about; the snares of death prevented me;
And he made darkness pavilions round
about him, dark waters, and thick clouds of the
skies.
He made darkness a
canopy around Him, a gathering of water and thick clouds.
Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an
everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow.
Is not my house right with God? For He has established with me an
everlasting covenant, ordered and secured in every part. Will He not bring
about my full salvation and my every desire?
He arose, and
smote the Philistines until his hand was
weary, and his hand
clave unto the sword: and the LORD wrought a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to
spoil.
but
Eleazar stood his ground and struck the Philistines until his hand grew
weary and
stuck to his sword. The LORD brought
about a great victory that day. Then the troops returned to him, but only to
plunder the dead.
But he stood in the midst of the ground, and defended it, and
slew the Philistines: and the LORD wrought a great victory.
But Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field, defended it, and struck down the Philistines. So the LORD brought about a great victory.
Then they came to
Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to
Dan-jaan, and
about to Zidon,
Then they went to
Gilead and the land of Tahtim-hodshi, and on to
Dan-jaan and around to
Sidon.
I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and
shew thyself a man;
“I am
about to go the way of all the earth. So be strong and prove
yourself a man.
Moreover thou knowest also what
Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto
Abner the son of
Ner, and unto
Amasa the son of Jether, whom he
slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his
girdle that was
about his loins, and in his
shoes that were on his feet.
Moreover, you know what
Joab son of Zeruiah did to me—what he did to
Abner son of
Ner and
Amasa son of Jether, the two commanders of the armies of Israel. He killed them in peacetime to
avenge the blood of war. He
stained with the blood of war the belt around his
waist and the
sandals on his feet.
And he said, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign:
howbeit the kingdom is turned
about, and is become my brother’s: for it was his from the LORD.
“You know that the
kingship was mine,” he said. “All Israel expected that I should reign, but the
kingship has turned to my brother, for it has come to him from the LORD.
And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh’s daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of the LORD, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.
Later, Solomon formed an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt by marrying his daughter. Solomon brought her to the City of David until he had finished building his palace and the house of the LORD, as well as the wall around Jerusalem.
For he had dominion over all the region on this side the river, from Tiphsah even to Azzah, over all the kings on this side the river: and he had peace on all sides round about him.
For Solomon had dominion over everything west of the Euphrates—over all the kingdoms from Tiphsah to
Gaza—and he had peace on all sides.
For he was wiser than all men; than
Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all nations round
about.
He was wiser than all men—wiser than
Ethan the Ezrahite, and wiser than Heman, Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame spread throughout the surrounding nations.
And he spake of trees, from the
cedar tree that is in
Lebanon even unto the
hyssop that springeth out of the wall: he spake also of beasts, and of fowl, and of
creeping things, and of fishes.
He spoke of trees, from the
cedar in
Lebanon to the
hyssop growing in the wall, and he taught
about animals, birds, reptiles, and fish.
Thou knowest how that David my father could not build an house unto the name of the LORD his God for the wars which were about him on every side, until the LORD put them under the soles of his feet.
“As you are well aware, due to the wars
waged on all sides against my father David, he could not build a house for the Name of the LORD his God until the LORD had put his enemies under his feet.
And against the wall of the house he built chambers round
about, against the walls of the house round
about, both of the temple and of the
oracle: and he made chambers round
about:
Against the walls of the temple and the inner sanctuary, Solomon built a chambered structure around the temple, in which he constructed the side rooms.
The
nethermost chamber was five cubits broad, and the middle was six cubits broad, and the third was seven cubits broad: for without in the wall of the house he made narrowed rests round
about, that the beams should not be fastened in the walls of the house.
The bottom floor was five cubits wide, the middle floor six cubits, and the third floor seven cubits. He also placed
offset ledges around the outside of the temple, so that nothing would be inserted into its walls.
And he carved all the walls of the house round about with carved figures of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers, within and without.
Then he carved the walls all around the temple, in both the inner and outer
sanctuaries, with carved engravings of
cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers.
And the great court round
about was with three rows of
hewed stones, and a row of
cedar beams, both for the inner court of the house of the LORD, and for the
porch of the house.
For he cast two pillars of brass, of eighteen cubits high
apiece: and a line of twelve cubits did compass either of them
about.
He cast two pillars of bronze, each eighteen cubits high and twelve cubits in circumference.
And he made the pillars, and two rows round
about upon the one network, to cover the chapiters that were upon the top, with pomegranates: and so did he for the other
chapiter.
Likewise, he made the pillars with two rows of pomegranates around each
grating to cover each capital
atop the pillars.
And the chapiters upon the two pillars had pomegranates also above, over against the
belly which was by the network: and the pomegranates were two hundred in rows round
about upon the other
chapiter.
On the capitals of both pillars, just above the rounded projection next to the network, were the two hundred pomegranates in rows
encircling each capital.
And he made a
molten sea, ten cubits from the one
brim to the other: it was round all
about, and his height was five cubits: and a line of thirty cubits did compass it round
about.
He also made the Sea of cast metal. It was circular in shape, measuring ten cubits from
rim to
rim, five cubits in height, and thirty cubits in circumference.
And under the
brim of it round
about there were knops compassing it, ten in a
cubit, compassing the sea round
about: the knops were cast in two rows, when it was cast.
Below the
rim, ornamental buds
encircled it, ten per
cubit all the way around the Sea, cast in two rows as a part of the Sea.
For on the plates of the ledges thereof, and on the borders thereof, he graved cherubims, lions, and palm trees, according to the proportion of every one, and additions round about.
He engraved
cherubim, lions, and palm trees on the surfaces of the supports and panels, wherever each had space, with
wreaths all around.
And the king turned his face about, and blessed all the congregation of Israel: (and all the congregation of Israel stood;)
And as the whole assembly of Israel stood there, the king turned around and blessed them all
And when the queen of
Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to prove him with hard questions.
Now when the queen of
Sheba heard
about the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to test him with difficult questions.
And she said to the king, It was a true report that I heard in mine own land of thy acts and of thy wisdom.
She said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your words and wisdom is true.
Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon
clave unto these in love.
These women were from the nations
about which the LORD had told the Israelites, “You must not
intermarry with them, for surely they will turn your hearts after their gods.” Yet Solomon
clung to these women in love.
And it came to pass, when
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and
Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)
When
Jeroboam son of Nebat heard
about this, he was still in Egypt where he had fled from King Solomon and had been living ever since.
And
Jeroboam said to his wife, Arise, I pray thee, and
disguise thyself, that thou be not known to be the wife of
Jeroboam; and get thee to
Shiloh: behold, there is
Ahijah the prophet, which told me that I should be king over this people.
And the LORD said unto
Ahijah, Behold, the wife of
Jeroboam cometh to ask a thing of thee for her son; for he is sick: thus and thus shalt thou say unto her: for it shall be, when she cometh in, that she shall
feign herself to be another woman.
But the LORD had said to
Ahijah, “Behold, the wife of
Jeroboam is coming to ask you
about her son, for he is ill. You are to say such and such to her, because when she arrives, she will be
disguised.”
And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a
trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.
And with the stones,
Elijah built an altar in the name of the LORD. Then he
dug a
trench around the altar large enough to hold two seahs of seed.
And the water ran round
about the altar; and he filled the
trench also with water.
So the water ran down around the altar and even filled the
trench.
