And the coast of the children of
Dan went out too little for them: therefore the children of
Dan went up to fight against Leshem, and took it, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem,
Dan,
after the name of
Dan their father.
(Later, when the territory of the Danites was lost to them, they went up and fought against Leshem, captured it, and put it to the sword. So they took possession of Leshem, settled there, and renamed it
after their father
Dan.)
Now if the
avenger of blood pursues him, they must not surrender the
manslayer into his hand, because that man killed his
neighbor accidentally without prior
malice.
But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD.
Rather, let it be a witness between us and you and the generations to come, that we will worship the LORD in His presence with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and peace offerings.’ Then in the future, your descendants cannot say to ours, ‘You have no share in the LORD!’
And it came to pass a long time
after that the LORD had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua waxed old and
stricken in age.
A long time after the LORD had given Israel rest from all the enemies around them, when Joshua was old and well along in years,
I sent Moses also and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out.
Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I
afflicted the Egyptians by what I did there, and
afterward I brought you out.
And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued
after your fathers with
chariots and
horsemen unto the Red sea.
When I brought your fathers out of Egypt and you reached the Red Sea, the Egyptians pursued them with
chariots and
horsemen as far as the Red Sea.
If ye
forsake the LORD, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you
hurt, and
consume you,
after that he hath done you good.
If you
forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, He will turn and bring
disaster on you and
consume you, even
after He has been good to you.”
And it came to pass
after these things, that Joshua the son of
Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old.
Some time later, Joshua son of
Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of 110.
Now
after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the
Canaanites first, to fight against them?
After the death of Joshua, the Israelites inquired of the LORD, “Who will be the first to go up and fight for us against the
Canaanites?”
But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
As Adoni-bezek fled, they pursued him, seized him, and cut off his thumbs and
big toes.
And
afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the
Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.
Afterward, the men of Judah marched down to fight against the
Canaanites living in the hill country, in the Negev, and in the foothills.
And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.
After Joshua had dismissed the people, the Israelites went out to take possession of the land, each to his own inheritance.
And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.
After that whole generation had also been gathered to their fathers, another generation rose up who did not know the LORD or the works that He had done for Israel.
And they
forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and
provoked the LORD to anger.
Thus they
forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they followed
after various gods of the peoples around them. They bowed down to them and
provoked the LORD to anger,
And yet they would not
hearken unto their judges, but they went a
whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.
Israel, however, did not
listen to their judges. Instead, they
prostituted themselves with other gods and bowed down to them. They quickly turned from the way of their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the LORD’s commandments; they did not do as their fathers had done.
And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their
stubborn way.
But when the judge died, the Israelites became even more corrupt than their fathers, going
after other gods to serve them and bow down to them. They would not give up their evil practices and
stubborn ways.
And he gathered unto him the children of
Ammon and Amalek, and went and
smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.
And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.
After Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he
ushered out those who had carried it.
And the
haft also went in
after the
blade; and the fat closed upon the
blade, so that he could not draw the
dagger out of his
belly; and the
dirt came out.
When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.
After Ehud was gone,
Eglon’s servants came in and found the doors of the upper room locked. “He must be
relieving himself in the cool room,” they said.
And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.
“Follow me,” he told them, “for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they followed him down and seized the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow
anyone to cross over.
And
after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which
slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox
goad: and he also delivered Israel.
After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath. And he too saved Israel, striking down six hundred Philistines with an
oxgoad.
And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD, when Ehud was dead.
After Ehud died, the Israelites again did evil in the sight of the LORD.
And
Deborah said unto
Barak, Up; for this is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the LORD gone out before thee? So
Barak went down from mount
Tabor, and ten thousand men
after him.
Then
Deborah said to
Barak, “Arise, for this is the day that the LORD has delivered Sisera into your hand. Has not the LORD gone before you?” So
Barak came down from Mount
Tabor with ten thousand men following him.
But
Barak pursued
after the
chariots, and
after the host, unto
Harosheth of the Gentiles: and all the host of Sisera fell upon the edge of the sword; and there was not a man left.
Then
Barak pursued the
chariots and army as far as
Harosheth-hagoyim, and the whole army of Sisera fell by the sword; not a single man was left.
Out of Ephraim was there a root of them against Amalek;
after thee, Benjamin, among thy people; out of Machir came down governors, and out of
Zebulun they that handle the pen of the writer.
Some came from Ephraim, with their roots in Amalek; Benjamin came with your people
after you. The commanders came down from Machir, the bearers of the marshal’s staff from
Zebulun.
And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said,
Gideon the son of
Joash hath done this thing.
“Who did this?” they said to one another. And
after they had investigated thoroughly, they were told, “
Gideon son of
Joash did it.”
But the Spirit of the LORD came upon
Gideon, and he
blew a
trumpet; and Abi-ezer was gathered
after him.
So the Spirit of the LORD came upon
Gideon, who
blew the ram’s horn and
rallied the Abiezrites behind him.
And he sent messengers throughout all
Manasseh; who also was gathered
after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto
Zebulun, and unto
Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.
And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.
and
listen to what they are saying. Then your hands will be strengthened to attack the camp.” So he went with Purah his servant to the outposts where armed men were guarding the camp.
So
Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they
blew the
trumpets, and
brake the pitchers that were in their hands.
Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just
after the changing of the guard. They
blew their horns and broke the jars that were in their hands.
And the men of Israel gathered themselves together out of
Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all
Manasseh, and pursued
after the Midianites.
Then the men of Israel were called out from
Naphtali, Asher, and all
Manasseh, and they pursued the Midianites.
And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you,
loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be
faint, and I am pursuing
after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of
Midian.
So
Gideon said to the men of Succoth, “Please give my troops some bread, for they are exhausted, and I am still pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of
Midian.”
And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued
after them, and took the two kings of
Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and
discomfited all the host.
When Zebah and Zalmunna fled,
Gideon pursued and captured these two kings of
Midian, routing their entire army.
And
Gideon the son of
Joash returned from battle before the sun was up,
And
Gideon made an
ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a
whoring after it: which thing became a
snare unto
Gideon, and to his house.
From all this
Gideon made an
ephod, which he placed in Ophrah, his hometown. But soon all Israel
prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a
snare to
Gideon and his household.
And it came to pass, as soon as
Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a
whoring after Baalim, and made
Baal-berith their god.
And as soon as
Gideon was dead, the Israelites turned and
prostituted themselves with the Baals, and they set up
Baal-berith as their god.
When
Abimelech had reigned three years over Israel,
After Abimelech had reigned over Israel for three years,
And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and
trode the grapes, and made
merry, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and
cursed Abimelech.
And
after they had gone out into the fields, gathered grapes from their vineyards, and
trodden them, they held a festival and went into the house of their god; and as they
ate and
drank, they
cursed Abimelech.
And
after Abimelech there arose to defend Israel
Tola the son of Puah, the son of
Dodo, a man of
Issachar; and he dwelt in Shamir in mount Ephraim.
After the time of
Abimelech, a man of
Issachar,
Tola son of Puah, the son of
Dodo, rose up to save Israel. He lived in Shamir, in the hill country of Ephraim.
And
after him arose
Jair, a Gileadite, and judged Israel twenty and two years.
Tola was followed by
Jair the Gileadite, who judged Israel twenty-two years.
And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his
vow which he had
vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,
After two months, she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had
vowed. And she had never had relations with a man. So it has become a custom in Israel
And
after him Ibzan of
Bethlehem judged Israel.
And after him Elon, a Zebulonite, judged Israel; and he judged Israel ten years.
After Ibzan, Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel ten years.
And
after him Abdon the son of
Hillel, a Pirathonite, judged Israel.
After Elon, Abdon son of
Hillel, from Pirathon, judged Israel.
And
Manoah arose, and went
after his wife, and came to the man, and said unto him, Art thou the man that spakest unto the woman? And he said, I am.
So
Manoah got up and followed his wife. When he came to the man, he asked, “Are you the man who spoke to my wife?” “I am,” he said.
And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret?
“Why do you ask my name,” said the angel of the LORD, “since it is beyond
comprehension?”
And
after a time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the
carcase of the lion: and, behold, there was a
swarm of bees and honey in the
carcase of the lion.
When
Samson returned later to take her, he left the road to see the lion’s
carcass, and in it was a
swarm of bees, along with their honey.
But it came to pass within a while
after, in the time of wheat harvest, that
Samson visited his wife with a
kid; and he said, I will go in to my wife into the chamber. But her father would not suffer him to go in.
Later on, at the time of the wheat harvest,
Samson took a young goat and went to visit his wife. “I want to go to my wife in her room,” he said. But her father would not let him enter.
And
Samson said unto them, Though ye have done this, yet will I be
avenged of you, and
after that I will cease.
And
Samson told them, “Because you have done this, I will not rest until I have taken
vengeance upon you.”
And it came to pass
afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was
Delilah.
Some time later,
Samson fell in love with a woman in the Valley of Sorek, whose name was
Delilah.
And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was
vexed unto death;
Finally,
after she had pressed him daily with her words and
pleaded until he was sick to death,
Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again
after he was
shaven.
However, the hair of his head began to grow back
after it had been
shaved.
Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.
So the five men departed and came to Laish, where they saw that the people were living securely, like the Sidonians,
tranquil and
unsuspecting. There was nothing lacking in the land and no
oppressive ruler. And they were far away from the Sidonians and had no alliance with
anyone.
And when they were a good way from the house of
Micah, the men that were in the houses near to
Micah’s house were gathered together, and overtook the children of
Dan.
After they were some distance from
Micah’s house, the men in the houses near
Micah’s house
mobilized and overtook the Danites.
And they
cried unto the children of
Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto
Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?
When they called out
after them, the Danites turned to face them and said to
Micah, “What is the matter with you that you have called out such a company?”
And they took the things which
Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they
smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire.
After they had taken
Micah’s idols and his priest, they went to Laish, to a
tranquil and
unsuspecting people, and they struck them with their swords and burned down the city.
And they called the name of the city
Dan,
after the name of
Dan their father, who was born unto Israel:
howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.
They named it
Dan,
after their
forefather Dan, who was born to Israel—though the city was formerly named Laish.
And his
concubine played the
whore against him, and went away from him unto her father’s house to Bethlehemjudah, and was there four whole months.
But she was unfaithful to him and left him to return to her father’s house in
Bethlehem in Judah.
After she had been there four months,
And her husband arose, and went
after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of
asses: and she brought him into her father’s house: and when the father of the
damsel saw him, he
rejoiced to meet him.
her husband got up and went
after her to speak kindly to her and bring her back, taking his servant and a pair of
donkeys. So the
girl brought him into her father’s house, and when her father saw him, he
gladly welcomed him.
And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the
damsel’s father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a
morsel of bread, and
afterward go your way.
On the fourth day, they got up early in the morning and prepared to depart, but the
girl’s father said to his son-in-law, “Refresh your heart with a
morsel of bread, and then you can go.”
And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the
damsel’s father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they
tarried until
afternoon, and they did eat both of them.
On the fifth day, he got up early in the morning to depart, but the
girl’s father said, “Please refresh your heart.” So they waited until late
afternoon and the two of them
ate.
And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them,
Nay, my brethren,
nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.
The owner of the house went out and said to them, “No, my brothers, do not do this wicked thing!
After all, this man is a
guest in my house. Do not commit this
outrage.
And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of
Rimmon: and they
gleaned of them in the
highways five thousand men; and pursued hard
after them unto Gidom, and
slew two thousand men of them.
Then the Benjamites turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of
Rimmon, and Israel cut down 5,000 men on the roads. And they overtook them at Gidom and struck down 2,000 more.
And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other
Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years.
who took
Moabite women as their wives, one named Orpah and the other named
Ruth. And
after they had lived in Moab about ten years,
And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law.
“Look,” said
Naomi, “your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and her gods; follow her back home.”
And
Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following
after thee: for
whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will
lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:
But
Ruth replied: “Do not
urge me to leave you or to turn from following you. For wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you live, I will live; your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.
I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me
Naomi, seeing the LORD hath
testified against me, and the
Almighty hath
afflicted me?
I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty. Why call me
Naomi?
After all, the LORD has
testified against me, and the
Almighty has
afflicted me.”
And
Ruth the
Moabitess said unto
Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and
glean ears of corn
after him in whose sight I shall find grace. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter.
And
Ruth the
Moabitess said to
Naomi, “Please let me go into the fields and
glean heads of grain
after someone in whose sight I may find favor.” “Go
ahead, my daughter,”
Naomi replied.
And she went, and came, and
gleaned in the field
after the reapers: and her
hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.
So
Ruth departed and went out into the field and
gleaned after the harvesters. And she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelech.
And she said, I pray you, let me
glean and gather
after the reapers among the
sheaves: so she came, and hath continued even from the morning until now, that she
tarried a little in the house.
She has said, ‘Please let me
glean and gather among the
sheaves after the harvesters.’ So she came out and has continued from morning until now, except that she rested a short time in the shelter.”
Let thine eyes be on the field that they do
reap, and go thou
after them: have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch thee? and when thou art
athirst, go unto the vessels, and drink of that which the young men have drawn.
Let your eyes be on the field they are harvesting, and follow along
after these girls. Indeed, I have ordered the young men not to touch you. And when you are
thirsty, go and drink from the jars the young men have filled.”
And she took it up, and went into the city: and her mother in law saw what she had
gleaned: and she brought forth, and gave to her that she had reserved
after she was sufficed.
She
picked up the grain and went into the town, where her mother-in-law saw what she had
gleaned. And she brought out what she had saved from her meal and gave it to
Naomi.
And when Boaz had eaten and
drunk, and his heart was
merry, he went to lie down at the end of the
heap of corn: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.
After Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good spirits, he went to lie down at the end of the
heap of grain. Then
Ruth went in secretly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.
And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich.
Then Boaz said, “May the LORD
bless you, my daughter. You have shown more kindness now than before, because you have not run
after the younger men, whether rich or poor.
And I thought to
advertise thee, saying,
Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou
wilt redeem it,
redeem it: but if thou
wilt not
redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to
redeem it beside thee; and I am
after thee. And he said, I will
redeem it.
I thought I should inform you that you may
buy it back in the presence of those seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you want to
redeem it, do so. But if you will not
redeem it, tell me so I may know, because there is no one but you to
redeem it, and I am next
after you.” “I will
redeem it,” he replied.
And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in
Shiloh. And the two sons of
Eli,
Hophni and
Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.
Year
after year Elkanah would go up from his city to worship and sacrifice to the LORD of Hosts at
Shiloh, where
Eli’s two sons,
Hophni and
Phinehas, were priests to the LORD.
And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she
provoked her; therefore she
wept, and did not eat.
And this went on year
after year. Whenever
Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival
taunted her until she
wept and would not eat.
So
Hannah rose up
after they had eaten in
Shiloh, and
after they had
drunk. Now
Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD.
So
after they had finished eating and drinking in
Shiloh,
Hannah stood up. Now
Eli the priest was sitting on a chair by the
doorpost of the temple of the LORD.
Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about
after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.
So in the course of time,
Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the LORD.”
But
Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be
weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there
abide for ever.
but
Hannah did not go. “
After the boy is
weaned,” she said to her husband, “I will take him to appear before the LORD and to stay there permanently.”
And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Eben-ezer unto
Ashdod.
After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from
Ebenezer to
Ashdod,
And it was so, that,
after they had carried it about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction: and he
smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had
emerods in their secret parts.
But
after they had moved the ark to
Gath, the LORD’s hand was also against that city, throwing it into great confusion and
afflicting the men of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.
And the
kine took the straight way to the way of Beth-shemesh, and went along the
highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went
after them unto the border of Beth-shemesh.
And the cows headed straight up the road toward Beth-shemesh, staying on that one
highway and lowing as they went, never
straying to the right or to the left. The rulers of the Philistines followed behind them to the border of Beth-shemesh.
And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjath-jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel
lamented after the LORD.
And from that day a long time passed, twenty years in all, as the ark remained at Kiriath-jearim. And all the house of Israel
mourned and sought
after the LORD.
Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Eben-ezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.
Afterward, Samuel took a stone and set it up between
Mizpah and Shen. He named it
Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.”
And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside
after lucre, and took bribes, and
perverted judgment.
But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside toward
dishonest gain, accepting bribes and
perverting justice.
As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall
straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he come, because he
doth bless the sacrifice; and
afterwards they eat that be
bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about this time ye shall find him.
As soon as you enter the city, you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. The people will not eat until he comes, because he must
bless the sacrifice;
after that, the guests will eat. Go up at once; you will find him.”
And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house.
And after they had come down from the high place into the city, Samuel spoke with Saul on the roof of his house.
After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a
psaltery, and a
tabret, and a pipe, and a
harp, before them; and they shall
prophesy:
After that you will come to Gibeah of God, where the Philistines have an outpost. As you approach the city, you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place, preceded by harps, tambourines, flutes, and lyres, and they will be
prophesying.
And Samuel called the people together unto the LORD to Mizpeh;
After this, Samuel summoned the people to the LORD at
Mizpah And, behold, Saul came
after the
herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they
weep? And they told him the
tidings of the men of
Jabesh.
Just then Saul was returning from the field, behind his oxen. “What troubles the people?” asked Saul. “Why are they
weeping?” And they relayed to him the words of the men from
Jabesh.
And he took a yoke of oxen, and
hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying,
Whosoever cometh not forth
after Saul and
after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.
He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent them by messengers throughout the land of Israel,
proclaiming, “This is what will be done to the oxen of
anyone who does not march behind Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the LORD fell upon the people, and they turned out as one man.
And turn ye not aside: for then should ye go after vain things, which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain.
Do not turn aside after worthless things that cannot profit you or deliver you, for they are empty.
And all Israel heard say that Saul had
smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in
abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together
after Saul to
Gilgal.
And all Israel heard the news: “Saul has attacked an outpost of the Philistines, and now Israel has become a
stench to the Philistines!” Then the people were summoned to join Saul at
Gilgal.
But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.
But now your kingdom will not
endure; the LORD has sought a man
after His own heart and appointed him ruler over His people, because you have not kept the command of the LORD.”
And the men of the garrison answered
Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will
shew you a thing. And
Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up
after me: for the LORD hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.
So the men of the outpost called out to
Jonathan and his
armor-bearer, “Come on up, and we will teach you a
lesson!” “Follow me,”
Jonathan told his
armor-bearer, “for the LORD has delivered them into the hand of Israel.”
And
Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armourbearer
after him: and they fell before
Jonathan; and his armourbearer
slew after him.
So
Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, with his
armor-bearer behind him. And the Philistines fell before
Jonathan, and his
armor-bearer followed and finished them off.
Likewise all the men of Israel which had
hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard
after them in the battle.
When all the Israelites who had been hiding in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were
fleeing, they also joined Saul and
Jonathan in the battle.
