For bodily exercise profiteth little: but
godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is,
and of that which is to come.
For physical exercise is of limited value, but
godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for the present life
and for the one to come.
This is a faithful saying
and worthy of all
acceptation.
This is a
trustworthy saying, worthy of full acceptance.
For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.
To this end we labor
and strive, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the
Savior of
everyone,
and especially of those who believe.
These things command and teach.
Command and teach these things.
Till I come, give attendance to reading, to
exhortation, to doctrine.
Meditate upon these things; give
thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
Be
diligent in these matters
and absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all.
Take
heed unto
thyself,
and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save
thyself,
and them that hear thee.
Pay close attention to your life
and to your teaching.
Persevere in these things, for by so doing you will save both
yourself and those who hear you.
Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father;
and the younger men as brethren;
Do not
rebuke an older man, but appeal to him as to a father. Treat younger men as brothers,
The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.
older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.
But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to
shew piety at home,
and to requite their parents: for that is good
and acceptable before God.
But if a widow has children or grandchildren, they must first learn to show
godliness to their own family
and repay their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God.
Now she that is a widow indeed,
and desolate, trusteth in God,
and continueth in supplications
and prayers night
and day.
The widow who is truly in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day in her petitions and prayers.
And these things give in charge, that they may be
blameless.
Give these instructions to the believers, so that they will be above reproach.
But if any provide not for his own,
and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith,
and is worse than an
infidel.
If
anyone does not provide for his own,
and especially his own household, he has denied the faith
and is worse than an unbeliever.
Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have
lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have relieved the
afflicted, if she have
diligently followed every good work.
and well known for good deeds such as bringing up children,
entertaining strangers, washing the feet of the saints, imparting relief to the
afflicted,
and devoting herself to every good work.
Having
damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.
and thus will
incur judgment because they are setting aside their first faith.
And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house;
and not only idle, but tattlers also
and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.
At the same time they will also learn to be idle, going from house to house
and being not only idle, but also gossips
and busybodies,
discussing things they should not mention.
I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the
adversary to speak
reproachfully.
If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them
relieve them,
and let not the church be charged; that it may
relieve them that are widows indeed.
If any believing woman has dependent widows, she must assist them and not allow the church to be burdened, so that it can help the widows who are truly in need.
Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.
Elders who lead effectively are worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching.
For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not
muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn.
And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.
For the Scripture says, “Do not
muzzle an ox while it is
treading out the grain,”
and, “The worker is worthy of his wages.”
I charge thee before God,
and the Lord Jesus Christ,
and the
elect angels, that thou observe these things without
preferring one before another, doing nothing by
partiality.
I solemnly charge you before God
and Christ Jesus
and the
elect angels to maintain these principles without
bias,
and to do nothing out of
partiality.
Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be
partaker of other men’s sins: keep
thyself pure.
Do not be too quick in the laying on of hands
and thereby share in the sins of others. Keep
yourself pure.
Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake
and thine often
infirmities.
Stop drinking only water and use a little wine instead, because of your stomach and your frequent ailments.
Some men’s sins are open
beforehand, going before to judgment;
and some men they follow after.
The sins of some men are obvious, going
ahead of them to judgment; but the sins of others do not surface until later.
Likewise also the good works of some are manifest
beforehand;
and they that are otherwise cannot be
hid.
In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even the ones that are inconspicuous cannot remain hidden.
Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God
and his doctrine be not
blasphemed.
All who are under the yoke of slavery should regard their masters as fully worthy of honor, so that God’s name and our teaching will not be discredited.
And they that have believing masters, let them not
despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful
and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach
and exhort.
Those who have believing masters should not show disrespect because they are brothers, but should serve them all the more, since those receiving their good service are beloved believers. Teach
and encourage these principles.
If any man teach otherwise,
and consent not to
wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and to the doctrine which is according to
godliness;
If
anyone teaches another doctrine
and disagrees with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ
and with godly teaching,
He is proud, knowing nothing, but
doting about questions
and strifes of words,
whereof cometh
envy,
strife, railings, evil surmisings,
Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds,
and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is
godliness: from such withdraw
thyself.
and constant friction between men of
depraved mind who are devoid of the truth. These men regard
godliness as a means of gain.
For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
For we brought nothing into the world, so we cannot carry anything out of it.
But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.
Those who want to be rich, however, fall into
temptation and become ensnared by many
foolish and harmful desires that
plunge them into ruin
and destruction.
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some
coveted after, they have
erred from the faith,
and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. By
craving it, some have
wandered away from the faith
and pierced themselves with many sorrows.
But you, O man of God,
flee from these things
and pursue righteousness,
godliness, faith, love,
perseverance,
and gentleness.
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life,
whereunto thou art also called,
and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made the good confession before many witnesses.
I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things,
and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius
Pilate witnessed a good confession;
I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things,
and of Christ Jesus, who made the good confession in His testimony before Pontius
Pilate:
Which in his times he shall
shew, who is the blessed
and only
Potentate, the King of kings,
and Lord of lords;
which the blessed and only Sovereign One—the King of kings and Lord of lords—will bring about in His own time.
Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour
and power
everlasting.
Amen.
He alone is
immortal and dwells in unapproachable light. No one has ever seen Him, nor can
anyone see Him. To Him be honor
and eternal dominion!
Amen.
Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be
conceited and not to put their hope in the uncertainty of wealth, but in God, who richly provides all things for us to enjoy.
That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works,
and to be generous
and ready to share,
O
Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding
profane and vain babblings,
and oppositions of science falsely so called:
which some have professed
and thus
swerved away from the faith. Grace be with you all.
To
Timothy, my
dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy,
and peace, from God the Father
and Christ Jesus our Lord.
To
Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy,
and peace from God the Father
and Christ Jesus our Lord.
I
thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have
remembrance of thee in my prayers night
and day;
I
thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience as did my forefathers, as I constantly remember you night
and day in my prayers.
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.
Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
He has saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works, but by His own purpose and by the grace He granted us in Christ Jesus before time began.
But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:
And now He has revealed this grace through the appearing of our
Savior, Christ Jesus, who has abolished death
and illuminated the way to life
and immortality through the gospel,
Whereunto I am appointed a preacher,
and an apostle,
and a teacher of the Gentiles.
to which I was appointed as a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher.
For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not
ashamed: for I know whom I have believed,
and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
For this reason, even though I suffer as I do, I am not
ashamed; for I know whom I have believed,
and I am
convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him for that day.
Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
Hold on to the pattern of sound teaching you have heard from me, with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus
and Hermogenes.
You know that
everyone in the Province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus
and Hermogenes.
The Lord give mercy unto the house of
Onesiphorus; for he
oft refreshed me,
and was not
ashamed of my chain:
May the Lord grant mercy to the household of
Onesiphorus, because he has often refreshed me
and was unashamed of my chains.
But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very
diligently,
and found me.
Indeed, when he arrived in Rome, he searched
diligently until he found me.
The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.
May the Lord grant
Onesiphorus His mercy on that day. You know very well how much he ministered to me in Ephesus.
And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
And the things that you have heard me say among many witnesses,
entrust these to faithful men who will be qualified to teach others as well.
Likewise, a
competitor does not receive the crown unless he competes according to the rules.
Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.
Consider what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all things.
And their word will eat as
doth a
canker: of whom is Hymenaeus
and Philetus;
and the talk of such men will spread like
gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus
and Philetus,
Who concerning the truth have
erred, saying that the resurrection is past already;
and overthrow the faith of some.
who have
deviated from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already occurred,
and they undermine the faith of some.
Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.
Nevertheless, God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,”
and, “
Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord must turn away from iniquity.”
But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.
A large house contains not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay. Some indeed are for honorable use, but others are for common use.
If a man therefore
purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour,
sanctified,
and meet for the master’s use,
and prepared unto every good work.
So if
anyone cleanses himself of what is unfit, he will be a vessel for honor:
sanctified, useful to the Master,
and prepared for every good work.
Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
Flee from youthful passions
and pursue righteousness, faith, love,
and peace, together with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
But
foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do
gender strifes.
But
reject foolish and ignorant speculation, for you know that it breeds quarreling.
And the servant of the Lord must not
strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
And that they may recover themselves out of the
snare of the devil, who are taken
captive by him at his will.
Then they will come to their senses
and escape the
snare of the devil, who has taken them
captive to his will.
Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
who are always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.
Now as
Jannes and Jambres
withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds,
reprobate concerning the faith.
Just as
Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men
oppose the truth. They are
depraved in mind
and disqualified from the faith.
But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was.
But they will not advance much further. For just like
Jannes and Jambres, their folly will be plain to
everyone.
Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at
Iconium, at
Lystra; what persecutions I
endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.
my persecutions,
and the sufferings that came upon me in Antioch,
Iconium,
and Lystra. What persecutions I
endured! Yet the Lord
rescued me from all of them.
Yea,
and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be
persecuted,
But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned
and hast been
assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
But as for you, continue in the things you have learned and firmly believed, since you know from whom you have learned them.
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of His appearing and His kingdom:
Preach the word; be prepared in season
and out of season; reprove,
rebuke,
and encourage with every form of patient instruction.
And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
So they will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.
For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.
For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand.
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
From now on there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will
award to me on that day—
and not only to me, but to all who
crave His appearing.
Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry.
Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is useful to me in the ministry.
Tychicus, however, I have sent to Ephesus.
The
cloke that I left at
Troas with
Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee,
and the books, but especially the parchments.
When you come, bring the
cloak that I left with
Carpus at
Troas,
and my scrolls, especially the parchments.
Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message would be fully proclaimed, and all the Gentiles would hear it. So I was delivered from the mouth of the lion.
And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work,
and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever
and ever.
Amen.
And the Lord will
rescue me from every evil action
and bring me safely into His heavenly kingdom. To Him be the glory
forever and ever.
Amen.
Do thy
diligence to come before winter. Eubulus greeteth thee,
and Pudens,
and Linus,
and Claudia,
and all the brethren.
Make every effort to come to me before winter. Eubulus sends you greetings, as do Pudens,
Linus, Claudia,
and all the brothers.
Paul, a servant of God,
and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s
elect,
and the acknowledging of the truth which is after
godliness;
Paul, a servant of God
and an apostle of Jesus Christ for the faith of God’s
elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to
godliness,
To
Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy,
and peace, from God the Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.
To
Titus, my true child in our common faith: Grace
and peace from God the Father
and Christ Jesus our
Savior.
For this cause left I thee in
Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting,
and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:
The reason I left you in
Crete was that you would set in order what was unfinished
and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you.
If any be
blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of
riot or
unruly.
Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to
exhort and to
convince the gainsayers.
He must hold firmly to the faithful word as it was taught, so that he can
encourage others by sound teaching
and refute those who
contradict it.
For there are many
unruly and vain talkers
and deceivers, specially they of the
circumcision:
