And when
Abram heard that his brother was taken
captive, he
armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto
Dan.
And when
Abram heard that his relative had been captured, he
mobilized the 318 trained men born in his household, and they set out in pursuit as far as
Dan.
And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and
smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.
During the night,
Abram divided his forces and routed
Chedorlaomer’s
army, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.
And Sarai said unto
Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my
maid into thy
bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was
despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.
Then Sarai said to
Abram, “May the wrong done to me be upon you! I delivered my servant into your
arms, and ever since she saw that she was
pregnant, she has treated me with contempt. May the LORD judge between you and me.”
And it came to pass at that time, that
Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his host spake unto Abraham, saying, God is with thee in all that thou doest:
At that time
Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his
army said to Abraham, “God is with you in all that you do.
Thus they made a covenant at Beer-
sheba: then
Abimelech rose up, and Phichol the chief captain of his host, and they returned into the land of the Philistines.
After they had made the covenant at
Beersheba,
Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his
army got up and returned to the land of the Philistines.
Then
Abimelech went to him from
Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his
army.
Later,
Abimelech came to Isaac from
Gerar, with Ahuzzath his
adviser and Phicol the commander of his
army.
And
Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and
kissed him: and they
wept.
Esau, however, ran to him and embraced him, threw his
arms around his neck, and
kissed him. And they both
wept.
And he fell upon his brother Benjamin’s neck, and
wept; and Benjamin
wept upon his neck.
Then Joseph threw his
arms around his brother Benjamin and
wept, and Benjamin
wept as they embraced.
But his bow abode in strength, and the
arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the
shepherd, the stone of Israel:)
Yet he
steadied his bow, and his strong
arms were tempered by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob, in the name of the
Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,
Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their
bondage, and I will
redeem you with a stretched out
arm, and with great judgments:
Therefore tell the Israelites: ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians and deliver you from their
bondage. I will
redeem you with an outstretched
arm and with mighty acts of judgment.
These are that Aaron and Moses, to whom the LORD said, Bring out the children of Israel from the land of Egypt according to their armies.
It was this Aaron and Moses to whom the LORD said, “Bring the Israelites out of the land of Egypt by their divisions.”
But Pharaoh shall not
hearken unto you, that I may lay my hand upon Egypt, and bring forth mine
armies, and my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great judgments.
Pharaoh will not
listen to you. Then I will lay My hand on Egypt, and by mighty acts of judgment I will bring the divisions of My people the Israelites out of the land of Egypt.
And ye shall observe the feast of
unleavened bread; for in this
selfsame day have I brought your
armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an
ordinance for ever.
So you are to keep the Feast of
Unleavened Bread, for on this very day I brought your divisions out of the land of Egypt. You must keep this day as a permanent statute for the generations to come.
And it came to pass the
selfsame day, that the LORD did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their
armies.
And on that very day the LORD brought the Israelites out of the land of Egypt by their divisions.
And I will
harden Pharaoh’s heart, that he shall follow after them; and I will be honoured upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host; that the Egyptians may know that I am the LORD. And they did so.
And I will
harden Pharaoh’s heart so that he will pursue them. But I will gain honor by means of Pharaoh and all his
army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD.” So this is what the Israelites did.
And he made ready his
chariot, and took his people with him:
So Pharaoh prepared his
chariot and took his
army with him.
But the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses and
chariots of Pharaoh, and his
horsemen, and his
army, and overtook them
encamping by the sea, beside
Pi-hahiroth, before
Baal-zephon.
The Egyptians—all Pharaoh’s horses and
chariots,
horsemen and troops—pursued the Israelites and overtook them as they camped by the sea near
Pi-hahiroth, opposite
Baal-zephon.
And I, behold, I will
harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get me honour upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his
chariots, and upon his
horsemen.
And I will
harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. Then I will gain honor by means of Pharaoh and all his
army and
chariots and
horsemen.
And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the
pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians,
At morning watch, however, the LORD looked down on the
army of the Egyptians from the
pillar of fire and cloud, and He threw their camp into confusion.
And the waters returned, and covered the
chariots, and the
horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them.
The waters flowed back and covered the
chariots and
horsemen—the entire
army of Pharaoh that had
chased the Israelites into the sea. Not one of them survived.
Pharaoh’s
chariots and his host hath he cast into the sea: his chosen captains also are
drowned in the Red sea.
Pharaoh’s
chariots and
army He has cast into the sea; the finest of his officers are
drowned in the Red Sea.
Fear and
dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of thine
arm they shall be as still as a stone; till thy people pass over, O LORD, till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased.
and terror and
dread will fall on them. By the power of Your
arm they will be as still as a stone until Your people pass by, O LORD, until the people You have bought pass by.
And Joshua
discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
So Joshua
overwhelmed Amalek and his
army with the sword.
From twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel: thou and Aaron shall number them by their armies.
You and Aaron are to number those who are twenty years of age or older by their divisions—
everyone who can serve in Israel’s
army.

army,
Of the children of
Zebulun, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;
From the sons of
Zebulun, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the
army,
Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Ephraim, were forty thousand and five hundred.
From the sons of Ephraim, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, those registered to the tribe of Ephraim numbered 40,500.
Of the children of
Manasseh, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;
And from the sons of
Manasseh, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the
army,
Of the children of Benjamin, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

From the sons of

army,
So were all those that were numbered of the children of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel;
So all the Israelites twenty years of age or older who could serve in Israel’s army were counted according to their families.
And on the east side toward the rising of the sun shall they of the standard of the camp of Judah pitch throughout their
armies: and Nahshon the son of
Amminadab shall be captain of the children of Judah.
On the east side, toward the
sunrise, the divisions of Judah are to camp under their standard:
All that were numbered in the camp of Judah were an hundred thousand and
fourscore thousand and six thousand and four hundred, throughout their
armies. These shall first set forth.
The total number of men in the divisions of the camp of Judah is 186,400; they shall set out first.
On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of
Reuben according to their
armies: and the captain of the children of
Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur.
On the south side, the divisions of
Reuben are to camp under their standard:
All that were numbered in the camp of
Reuben were an hundred thousand and fifty and one thousand and four hundred and fifty, throughout their
armies. And they shall set forth in the second rank.
The total number of men in the divisions of the camp of
Reuben is 151,450; they shall set out second.
On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their armies: and the captain of the sons of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud.
On the west side, the divisions of Ephraim are to camp under their standard:
All that were numbered of the camp of Ephraim were an hundred thousand and eight thousand and an hundred, throughout their armies. And they shall go forward in the third rank.
The total number of men in the divisions of the camp of Ephraim is 108,100; they shall set out third.
The standard of the camp of
Dan shall be on the north side by their
armies: and the captain of the children of
Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.
On the north side, the divisions of
Dan are to camp under their standard:
In the first place went the standard of the camp of the children of Judah according to their
armies: and over his host was Nahshon the son of
Amminadab.
First, the divisions of the camp of Judah set out under their standard, with Nahshon son of
Amminadab in command.
And the standard of the camp of
Reuben set forward according to their
armies: and over his host was Elizur the son of Shedeur.
Then the divisions of the camp of
Reuben set out under their standard, with Elizur son of Shedeur in command.
And the standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their armies: and over his host was Elishama the son of Ammihud.
Next, the divisions of the camp of Ephraim set out under their standard, with Elishama son of Ammihud in command.
Thus were the journeyings of the children of Israel according to their armies, when they set forward.
This was the order of march for the
Israelite divisions as they set out.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Is the LORD’S hand waxed short? thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not.
The LORD answered Moses, “Is the LORD’s arm too short? Now you will see whether or not My word will come to pass.”
And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And
Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.
But
Edom insisted, “You may not pass through.” And they came out to
confront the Israelites with a large
army and a strong hand.
And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness: and he came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. Instead, he gathered his whole
army and went out to
confront Israel in the wilderness. When he came to Jahaz, he fought against Israel.
And they turned and went up by the way of
Bashan: and
Og the king of
Bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.
Then they turned and went up the road to
Bashan, and
Og king of
Bashan and his whole
army came out to meet them in battle at Edrei.
So they
smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him alive: and they possessed his land.
So they struck down
Og, along with his sons and his whole
army, until no
remnant was left. And they took possession of his land.
Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, throughout their fathers’ house, all that are able to go to war in Israel.
“Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel by the houses of their fathers—all those twenty years of age or older who can serve in the army of Israel.”
And Moses spake unto the people, saying,
Arm some of
yourselves unto the war, and let them go against the Midianites, and
avenge the LORD of
Midian.
So Moses told the people, “
Arm some of your men for war, that they may go against the Midianites and
execute the LORD’s
vengeance on them.
So there were delivered out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand of every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.
So a thousand men were
recruited from each tribe of Israel—twelve thousand
armed for war.
And Moses was
wroth with the officers of the host, with the captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, which came from the battle.
But Moses was
angry with the officers of the
army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who were returning from the battle.
And the officers which were over thousands of the host, the captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, came near unto Moses:
Then the officers who were over the units of the army—the commanders of thousands and of hundreds—approached Moses
We have therefore brought an
oblation for the LORD, what every man hath
gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and tablets, to make an
atonement for our souls before the LORD.
So we have brought to the LORD an offering of the gold articles each man acquired—
armlets, bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces—to make
atonement for ourselves before the LORD.”
But we ourselves will go ready
armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the
fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
But we will
arm ourselves and be ready to go
ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them into their place. Meanwhile, our little ones will remain in the fortified cities for protection from the inhabitants of the land.
And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the LORD to war,
Moses replied, “If you will do this—if you will
arm yourselves before the LORD for battle,
And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the LORD, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him,
and if every one of your armed men crosses the Jordan before the LORD, until He has driven His enemies out before Him,
But thy servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord saith.
But your servants are
equipped for war, and every man will cross over to the battle before the LORD, just as our lord says.”
And Moses said unto them, If the children of
Gad and the children of
Reuben will pass with you over Jordan, every man
armed to battle, before the LORD, and the land shall be subdued before you; then ye shall give them the land of
Gilead for a possession:
And Moses said to them, “If the Gadites and Reubenites cross the Jordan with you, with every man
armed for battle before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you, then you are to give them the land of
Gilead as a possession.
But if they will not pass over with you
armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of
Canaan.
But if they do not
arm themselves and go across with you, then they must accept their possession among you in the land of
Canaan.”
We will pass over
armed before the LORD into the land of
Canaan, that the possession of our inheritance on this side Jordan may be ours.
We will cross over into the land of
Canaan armed before the LORD, that we may have our inheritance on this side of the Jordan.”
These are the journeys of the children of Israel, which went forth out of the land of Egypt with their armies under the hand of Moses and Aaron.
These are the journeys of the Israelites when they came out of the land of Egypt by their divisions under the
leadership of Moses and Aaron.
Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.
So Sihon and his whole army came out for battle against us at Jahaz.
And the LORD our God delivered him before us; and we
smote him, and his sons, and all his people.
And the LORD our God delivered him over to us, and we defeated him and his sons and his whole army.
Then we turned, and went up the way to
Bashan: and
Og the king of
Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.
Then we turned and went up the road to
Bashan, and
Og king of
Bashan and his whole
army came out to meet us in battle at Edrei.
So the LORD our God delivered into our hands
Og also, the king of
Bashan, and all his people: and we
smote him until none was left to him remaining.
So the LORD our God also delivered
Og king of
Bashan and his whole
army into our hands. We struck them down until no
survivor was left.
And I commanded you at that time, saying, The LORD your God hath given you this land to possess it: ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Israel, all that are meet for the war.
At that time I commanded you: “The LORD your God has given you this land to possess. All your men of
valor are to cross over,
armed for battle,
ahead of your brothers, the Israelites.
Or hath God
assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out
arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
Or has any god tried to take as his own a nation out of another nation—by trials, signs, wonders, and war, by a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors—as the LORD your God did for you in Egypt, before your eyes?
And remember that thou
wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out
arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.
Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. That is why the LORD your God has commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
The great temptations which thine eyes saw, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the stretched out arm, whereby the LORD thy God brought thee out: so shall the LORD thy God do unto all the people of whom thou art afraid.
the great trials that you saw, the signs and wonders, and the mighty hand and outstretched arm by which the LORD your God brought you out. The LORD your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear.
Yet they are thy people and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest out by thy mighty power and by thy stretched out arm.
But they are Your people, Your inheritance, whom You brought out by Your great power and outstretched arm.”
And know ye this day: for I speak not with your children which have not known, and which have not seen the
chastisement of the LORD your God, his greatness, his mighty hand, and his stretched out
arm,
Know this day that it is not your children who have known and seen the discipline of the LORD your God: His greatness, His mighty hand, and His outstretched arm;
And what he did unto the
army of Egypt, unto their horses, and to their
chariots; how he made the water of the Red sea to overflow them as they pursued after you, and how the LORD hath destroyed them unto this day;
what He did to the Egyptian
army and horses and
chariots when He made the waters of the Red Sea
engulf them as they pursued you, and how He destroyed them completely, even to this day;
When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and
chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
When you go out to war against your enemies and see horses,
chariots, and an
army larger than yours, do not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, is with you.
And it shall be, when ye are come
nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,
When you are about to go into battle, the priest is to come forward and address the army,
And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man
dedicate it.
Furthermore, the officers are to address the
army, saying, “Has any man built a new house and not dedicated it? Let him return home, or he may die in battle and another man
dedicate it.
And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and
fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart
faint as well as his heart.
Then the officers shall speak further to the
army, saying, “Is any man afraid or
fainthearted? Let him return home, so that the hearts of his brothers will not
melt like his own.”
And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall make captains of the armies to lead the people.
When the officers have finished addressing the
army, they are to
appoint commanders to lead it.
And the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with great terribleness, and with signs, and with wonders:
Then the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great terror, signs, and wonders.
And of
Gad he said, Blessed be he that enlargeth
Gad: he dwelleth as a lion, and teareth the
arm with the crown of the head.
Concerning
Gad he said: “Blessed is he who enlarges the
domain of
Gad! He lies down like a lion and tears off an
arm or a head.
The eternal God is thy refuge, and
underneath are the
everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.
The eternal God is your dwelling place, and
underneath are the
everlasting arms. He drives out the enemy before you, giving the command, ‘Destroy him!’
Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan; but ye shall pass before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valour, and help them;
Your wives, your young children, and your
livestock may remain in the land that Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan. But all your mighty men of
valor must be
armed for battle to cross over
ahead of your brothers and help them,
And the children of
Reuben, and the children of
Gad, and half the tribe of
Manasseh, passed over
armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spake unto them:
The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh crossed over before the Israelites,
armed for battle as Moses had
instructed them.
About forty thousand prepared for war passed over before the LORD unto battle, to the plains of
Jericho.
About 40,000 troops
armed for battle crossed over before the LORD into the plains of
Jericho.
And he said,
Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant?
“Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as Commander of the LORD’s army.” Then Joshua fell facedown in reverence and asked Him, “What does my Lord have to say to His servant?”
And the captain of the LORD’S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy
shoe from off thy foot; for the place
whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.
The Commander of the LORD’s
army replied, “Take off your
sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.
And he said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let him that is armed pass on before the ark of the LORD.
And he told the people, “Advance and march around the city, with the
armed troops going
ahead of the ark of the LORD.”
And the
armed men went before the priests that
blew with the
trumpets, and the rereward came after the ark, the priests going on, and blowing with the
trumpets.
While the horns continued to sound, the
armed troops marched
ahead of the priests who
blew the horns, and the rear guard followed the ark.
And seven priests bearing seven
trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually, and
blew with the
trumpets: and the
armed men went before them; but the rereward came after the ark of the LORD, the priests going on, and blowing with the
trumpets.
And the seven priests carrying seven rams’ horns kept marching
ahead of the ark of the LORD and blowing the horns. The
armed troops went in front of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the LORD, while the horns kept sounding.
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to
Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of
Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:
Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid or discouraged. Take the whole
army with you, and go up and attack
Ai. See, I have delivered into your hand the king of
Ai, his people, his city, and his land.
So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against
Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.
So Joshua and the whole
army set out to attack
Ai. Joshua chose 30,000 mighty men of
valor and sent them out at night
Therefore the five kings of the
Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of
Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of
Lachish, the king of
Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and
encamped before
Gibeon, and made war against it.
So the five kings of the
Amorites—the kings of Jerusalem,
Hebron, Jarmuth,
Lachish, and
Eglon—joined forces and advanced with all their
armies. They camped before
Gibeon and made war against it.
So Joshua ascended from
Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.
So Joshua and his whole
army, including all the mighty men of
valor, came from
Gilgal.
And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
The whole
army returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one
dared to utter a word against the Israelites.
And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
When they had brought the kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had accompanied him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So the commanders came forward and put their feet on their necks.
