And they brought every man his present, vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and garments, and armour, and spices, horses, and mules, a rate year by year.
Year after year, each
visitor would bring his tribute: articles of silver and gold, clothing, weapons, spices, horses, and mules.
For it came to pass, when David was in
Edom, and
Joab the captain of the host was gone up to
bury the slain, after he had
smitten every male in
Edom;
Earlier, when David was in
Edom,
Joab the commander of the
army had gone to
bury the dead and had struck down every male in
Edom.
And when
Hadad heard in Egypt that David
slept with his fathers, and that
Joab the captain of the host was dead,
Hadad said to Pharaoh, Let me depart, that I may go to mine own country.
When
Hadad heard in Egypt that David had rested with his fathers and that
Joab, the commander of the
army, was dead, he said to Pharaoh, “Let me go, that I may return to my own country.”
And the people that were
encamped heard say, Zimri hath
conspired, and hath also slain the king: wherefore all Israel made Omri, the captain of the host, king over Israel that day in the camp.
and the people in the camp heard that Zimri had not only
conspired but had also struck down the king. So there in the camp that very day, all Israel proclaimed Omri, the commander of the
army, king over Israel.
And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her
bosom, and carried him up into a
loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.
But
Elijah said to her, “Give me your son.” So he took him from her
arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed.
And Ben-
hadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together: and there were thirty and two kings with him, and horses, and
chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and
warred against it.
Now Ben-
hadad king of
Aram assembled his entire
army. Accompanied by thirty-two kings with their horses and
chariots, he marched up, besieged Samaria, and
waged war against it.
And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth on his
harness boast himself as he that putteth it off.
And the king of Israel replied, “Tell him: ‘The one putting on his
armor should not
boast like one taking it off.’”
And, behold, there came a prophet unto
Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thine hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.
Meanwhile a prophet approached
Ahab king of Israel and declared, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Do you see this entire great
army? Behold, I will deliver it into your hand this very day, and you will know that I am the LORD.’”
So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city, and the army which followed them.
Meanwhile, these young officers of the district governors marched out of the city, with the army behind them,
And number thee an
army, like the
army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and
chariot for
chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he
hearkened unto their voice, and did so.
And you must raise an
army like the one you have lost—horse for horse and
chariot for
chariot—so we can fight the Israelites on the plain, where we will surely prevail.” And the king approved their plan and acted accordingly.
And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
Then the man of God approached the king of Israel and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because the Arameans think the LORD is a god of the hills and not of the valleys, I will deliver all this great army into your hand. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’”
And they pitched one over against the other seven days. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined: and the children of Israel
slew of the Syrians an hundred thousand
footmen in one day.
For seven days the
armies camped opposite each other, and on the seventh day the battle
ensued, and the Israelites struck down the Arameans—a hundred thousand foot soldiers in one day.
And a certain man drew a bow at a
venture, and
smote the king of Israel between the joints of the
harness: wherefore he said unto the driver of his
chariot, Turn thine hand, and carry me out of the host; for I am wounded.
However, a certain man drew his bow without taking special aim, and he struck the king of Israel between the joints of his
armor. So the king said to his
charioteer, “Turn around and take me out of the battle, for I am badly wounded!”
And there went a
proclamation throughout the host about the going down of the sun, saying, Every man to his city, and every man to his own country.
As the sun was setting, the cry
rang out in the
army: “Every man to his own city, and every man to his own land!”
And one washed the
chariot in the
pool of Samaria; and the dogs
licked up his blood; and they washed his
armour; according unto the word of the LORD which he spake.
And the
chariot was washed at the
pool of Samaria where the prostitutes bathed, and the dogs
licked up
Ahab’s blood, according to the word that the LORD had spoken.
So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of
Edom: and they
fetched a compass of seven days’ journey: and there was no water for the host, and for the cattle that followed them.
So the king of Israel, the king of Judah, and the king of
Edom set out, and after they had traveled a
roundabout route for seven days, they had no water for their
army or for their animals.
And when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered all that were able to put on armour, and upward, and stood in the border.
Now all the Moabites had heard that the kings had come up to fight against them. So all who could bear arms, young and old, were summoned and stationed at the border.
And he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among mine own people.
and
Elisha said to Gehazi, “Now tell her, ‘Look, you have gone to all this trouble for us. What can we do for you? Can we speak on your behalf to the king or the commander of the
army?’” “I have a home among my own people,” she replied.
And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said,
Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine
handmaid.
And
Elisha declared, “At this time next year, you will hold a son in your
arms.” “No, my lord,” she said. “Do not lie to your
maidservant, O man of God.”
Now
Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable, because by him the LORD had given
deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valour, but he was a
leper.
Now
Naaman, the commander of the
army of the king of
Aram, was a great man in his master’s sight and highly regarded, for through him the LORD had given victory to
Aram. And he was a mighty man of
valor, but he was a
leper.
In this thing the LORD
pardon thy servant, that when my master goeth into the house of
Rimmon to worship there, and he leaneth on my hand, and I bow myself in the house of
Rimmon: when I bow down myself in the house of
Rimmon, the LORD
pardon thy servant in this thing.
Yet may the LORD
forgive your servant this one thing: When my master goes into the temple of
Rimmon to worship there, and he leans on my
arm, and I bow down in the temple of
Rimmon, may the LORD
forgive your servant in this matter.”
Therefore sent he thither horses, and
chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about.
the king of
Aram sent horses,
chariots, and a great
army. They went there by night and surrounded the city.
And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and
chariots. And his servant said unto him,
Alas, my master! how shall we do?
When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early in the morning, an
army with horses and
chariots had surrounded the city. So he asked
Elisha, “Oh, my master, what are we to do?”
And it came to pass after this, that Ben-
hadad king of Syria gathered all his host, and went up, and besieged Samaria.
Some time later, Ben-
hadad king of
Aram assembled his entire
army and marched up to
besiege Samaria.
Then a lord on whose hand the king
leaned answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if the LORD would make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.
But the officer on whose
arm the king
leaned answered the man of God, “Look, even if the LORD were to make windows in heaven, could this really happen?” “You will see it with your own eyes,” replied
Elisha, “but you will not eat any of it.”
For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of
chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host: and they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel hath
hired against us the kings of the
Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us.
For the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound of
chariots, horses, and a great
army, so that they said to one another, “Look, the king of Israel must have
hired the kings of the
Hittites and Egyptians to attack us.”
They took therefore two
chariot horses; and the king sent after the host of the Syrians, saying, Go and see.
Then the scouts took two
chariots with horses, and the king sent them after the
Aramean army, saying, “Go and see.”
And the king appointed the lord on whose hand he
leaned to have the charge of the gate: and the people
trode upon him in the gate, and he died, as the man of God had said, who spake when the king came down to him.
Now the king had appointed the officer on whose
arm he
leaned to be in charge of the gate, but the people
trampled him in the
gateway, and he died, just as the man of God had
foretold when the king had come to him.
And when he came, behold, the captains of the host were sitting; and he said, I have an
errand to thee, O captain. And
Jehu said, Unto which of all us? And he said, To thee, O captain.
and when he arrived, the
army commanders were sitting there. “I have a message for you, commander,” he said. “For which of us?” asked
Jehu. “For you, commander,” he replied.
And
Jehu drew a bow with his full strength, and
smote Jehoram between his
arms, and the
arrow went out at his heart, and he sunk down in his
chariot.
Now as soon as this letter cometh to you, seeing your master’s sons are with you, and there are with you
chariots and horses, a
fenced city also, and
armour;
“When this letter arrives, since your master’s sons are with you and you have
chariots and horses, a fortified city and
weaponry,
But Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the host, and said unto them, Have her forth without the ranges: and him that followeth her kill with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of the LORD.
And Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of hundreds in charge of the
army, “Bring her out between the ranks, and put to the sword
anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the house of the LORD.”
But the LORD, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and a stretched out arm, him shall ye fear, and him shall ye worship, and to him shall ye do sacrifice.
Instead, worship the LORD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt with great power and an outstretched arm. You are to bow down to Him and offer sacrifices to Him.
And the king of Assyria sent
Tartan and Rabsaris and
Rab-shakeh from
Lachish to king
Hezekiah with a great host against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the
conduit of the upper
pool, which is in the
highway of the fuller’s field.
Nevertheless, the king of Assyria sent the
Tartan, the Rabsaris, and the
Rabshakeh, along with a great
army, from
Lachish to King
Hezekiah at Jerusalem. They advanced up to Jerusalem and stationed themselves by the
aqueduct of the upper
pool, on the road to the
Launderer’s Field.
One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god
Nisroch, his sons
Adrammelech and Sharezer put him to the sword and escaped to the land of
Ararat. And his son Esar-haddon reigned in his place.
And
Hezekiah hearkened unto them, and shewed them all the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious
ointment, and all the house of his
armour, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that
Hezekiah shewed them not.
And
Hezekiah received the envoys and showed them all that was in his
treasure house—the silver, the gold, the spices, and the precious oil, as well as his
armory—all that was found in his storehouses. There was nothing in his palace or in all his dominion that
Hezekiah did not show them.
And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he, and all his host, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it; and they built forts against it round about.
So in the ninth year of
Zedekiah’s reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month,
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his entire
army. They
encamped outside the city and built a siege wall all around it.
And the
army of the Chaldees pursued after the king, and overtook him in the plains of
Jericho: and all his
army were scattered from him.
but the
army of the Chaldeans pursued the king and overtook him in the plains of
Jericho, and all his
army was separated from him.
And all the
army of the Chaldees, that were with the captain of the guard,
brake down the walls of Jerusalem round about.
And the whole army of the Chaldeans under the captain of the guard broke down the walls around Jerusalem.
And out of the city he took an officer that was set over the men of war, and five men of them that were in the king’s presence, which were found in the city, and the principal
scribe of the host, which
mustered the people of the land, and
threescore men of the people of the land that were found in the city:
Of those still in the city, he took a court official who had been appointed over the men of war, as well as five royal advisors. He also took the
scribe of the captain of the
army, who had
enlisted the people of the land, and sixty men who were found in the city.
And when all the captains of the
armies, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah governor, there came to Gedaliah to
Mizpah, even
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan the son of Careah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men.
When all the commanders of the
armies and their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah as governor, they came to Gedaliah at
Mizpah—
Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan son of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah son of the Maacathite, as well as their men.
And all the people, both small and great, and the captains of the armies, arose, and came to Egypt: for they were afraid of the Chaldees.
Then all the people small and great, together with the commanders of the army, arose and fled to Egypt for fear of the Chaldeans.
Then said Saul to his
armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through
therewith; lest these
uncircumcised come and
abuse me. But his
armourbearer would not; for he was
sore afraid. So Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.
Then Saul said to his
armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run it through me, or these
uncircumcised men will come and
torture me!” But his
armor-bearer was
terrified and refused to do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.
And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise on the sword, and died.
When his
armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his own sword and died.
And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, then they
forsook their cities, and fled: and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
When all the Israelites in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their cities and ran away. So the Philistines came and occupied their cities.
And when they had
stripped him, they took his head, and his
armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to carry
tidings unto their idols, and to the people.
They
stripped Saul, cut off his head, took his
armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to
proclaim the news in the temple of their idols and among their people.
And they put his
armour in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the temple of
Dagon.
They put his
armor in the temple of their gods and hung his head in the temple of
Dagon.
Zelek the
Ammonite, Naharai the Berothite, the
armourbearer of
Joab the son of Zeruiah,
They were
armed with bows, and could use both the right hand and the left in
hurling stones and shooting arrows out of a bow, even of Saul’s brethren of Benjamin.
they were archers using both the right and left hands to
sling stones and shoot arrows; and they were Saul’s
kinsmen from Benjamin):
These were of the sons of
Gad, captains of the host: one of the least was over an hundred, and the greatest over a thousand.
These Gadites were
army commanders, the least of whom was a
match for a hundred, and the greatest for a thousand.
And they helped David against the band of the rovers: for they were all mighty men of valour, and were captains in the host.
They helped David against the raiders, for they were all mighty men of
valor and commanders in the
army.
For at that time day by day there came to David to help him, until it was a great host, like the host of God.
For at that time men came to David day after day to help him, until he had a great army, like the army of God.
And these are the numbers of the bands that were ready
armed to the war, and came to David to
Hebron, to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the LORD.
Now these are the numbers of men
armed for battle who came to David at
Hebron to turn Saul’s kingdom over to him, in accordance with the word of the LORD:
The children of Judah that bare shield and
spear were six thousand and eight hundred, ready
armed to the war.
From Judah: 6,800 armed troops bearing shields and spears.
And on the other side of Jordan, of the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and of the half tribe of
Manasseh, with all manner of instruments of war for the battle, an hundred and twenty thousand.
And from east of the Jordan, from
Reuben,
Gad, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh there: 120,000
armed with every kind of weapon of war.
David therefore did as God commanded him: and they
smote the host of the Philistines from
Gibeon even to
Gazer.
So David did as God had commanded him, and they struck down the
army of the Philistines all the way from
Gibeon to
Gezer.
Now when Tou king of
Hamath heard how David had
smitten all the host of Hadarezer king of Zobah;
When King Tou of
Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire
army of Hadadezer king of Zobah,
And
Joab the son Zeruiah was over the host; and
Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud, recorder.
Joab son of Zeruiah was over the
army;
Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the recorder;
And when David heard of it, he sent
Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
On hearing this, David sent
Joab and the entire
army of mighty men.
And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
When the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers to bring more Arameans from beyond the Euphrates, with Shophach the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them.
But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David
slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in
chariots, and forty thousand
footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.
But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers. He also killed Shophach the commander of their army.
And it came to pass, that after the year was
expired, at the time that kings go out to battle,
Joab led forth the power of the
army, and wasted the country of the children of
Ammon, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David
tarried at Jerusalem. And
Joab smote Rabbah, and destroyed it.
In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war,
Joab led out the
army and
ravaged the land of the
Ammonites. He came to Rabbah and besieged it, but David remained in Jerusalem. And
Joab attacked Rabbah and
demolished it.
Moreover David and the captains of the host separated to the service of the sons of
Asaph, and of Heman, and of
Jeduthun, who should
prophesy with harps, with
psalteries, and with cymbals: and the number of the workmen according to their service was:
Additionally, David and the commanders of the
army set apart some of the sons of
Asaph, Heman, and
Jeduthun to
prophesy with the
accompaniment of lyres, harps, and cymbals. The following is the list of the men who performed this service:
Which Shelomith and his brethren were over all the treasures of the dedicated things, which David the king, and the chief fathers, the captains over thousands and hundreds, and the captains of the host, had dedicated.
This Shelomith and his brothers were in charge of all the
treasuries for the things dedicated by King David, by the heads of families who were the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and by the
army commanders.
Of the children of
Perez was the chief of all the captains of the host for the first month.
He was a
descendant of
Perez and chief of all the
army commanders for the first month.
The third captain of the host for the third month was Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, a chief priest: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.
The third army commander, as chief for the third month, was Benaiah son of Jehoiada the priest. There were 24,000 men in his division.
And after
Ahithophel was Jehoiada the son of Benaiah, and
Abiathar: and the general of the king’s
army was
Joab.
Ahithophel was succeeded by Jehoiada son of Benaiah, then by
Abiathar.
Joab was the commander of the king’s
army.
Moreover concerning the stranger, which is not of thy people Israel, but is come from a far country for thy great name’s sake, and thy mighty hand, and thy stretched out arm; if they come and pray in this house;
And as for the foreigner who is not of Your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of Your great name and Your mighty hand and outstretched arm—when he comes and prays toward this temple,
And there were six steps to the throne, with a
footstool of gold, which were fastened to the throne, and stays on each side of the sitting place, and two lions standing by the stays:
The throne had six steps, and a
footstool of gold was attached to it. There were
armrests on both sides of the seat, with a lion standing beside each
armrest.
And
Abijah set the battle in
array with an
army of
valiant men of war, even four hundred thousand chosen men:
Jeroboam also set the battle in
array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, being mighty men of valour.
Abijah went into battle with an
army of 400,000 chosen men, while
Jeroboam drew up in formation against him with 800,000 chosen and mighty men of
valor.
And now ye think to
withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David; and ye be a great multitude, and there are with you golden
calves, which
Jeroboam made you for gods.
And now you think you can resist the kingdom of the LORD, which is in the hands of David’s descendants. You are indeed a vast
army, and you have with you the golden
calves that
Jeroboam made for you as gods.
And
Asa had an
army of men that bare targets and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bare shields and drew bows, two hundred and
fourscore thousand: all these were mighty men of valour.
Asa had an
army of 300,000 men from Judah bearing large shields and spears, and 280,000 men from Benjamin bearing small shields and drawing the bow. All these were mighty men of
valor.
And there came out against them Zerah the
Ethiopian with an host of a thousand thousand, and three hundred
chariots; and came unto Mareshah.
Then Zerah the
Cushite came against them with an
army of 1,000,000 men and 300
chariots, and they advanced as far as Mareshah.
And
Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto
Gerar: and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before the LORD, and before his host; and they carried away very much
spoil.
Then
Asa and his
army pursued them as far as
Gerar. The Cushites fell and could not recover, for they were
crushed before the LORD and His
army. So the people of Judah carried off a great amount of
plunder And at that time Hanani the
seer came to
Asa king of Judah, and said unto him, Because thou hast
relied on the king of Syria, and not
relied on the LORD thy God, therefore is the host of the king of Syria escaped out of thine hand.
At that time Hanani the
seer came to King
Asa of Judah and told him, “Because you have
relied on the king of
Aram and not on the LORD your God, the
army of the king of
Aram has escaped from your hand.
Were not the Ethiopians and the Lubims a huge host, with very many
chariots and
horsemen? yet, because thou
didst rely on the LORD, he delivered them into thine hand.
Were not the Cushites and Libyans a vast
army with many
chariots and
horsemen? Yet because you
relied on the LORD, He delivered them into your hand.
And of Benjamin; Eliada a mighty man of valour, and with him armed men with bow and shield two hundred thousand.
From Benjamin: Eliada, a mighty man of
valor, and with him 200,000
armed with bows and shields;
And next him was Jehozabad, and with him an hundred and
fourscore thousand ready prepared for the war.
and next to him, Jehozabad, and with him 180,000 armed for battle.
And a certain man drew a bow at a
venture, and
smote the king of Israel between the joints of the
harness: therefore he said to his
chariot man, Turn thine hand, that thou mayest carry me out of the host; for I am wounded.
However, a certain man drew his bow without taking special aim, and he struck the king of Israel between the joints of his
armor. So the king said to his
charioteer, “Turn around and take me out of the battle, for I am badly wounded!”
Then there came some that told
Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be Hazazon-tamar, which is En-gedi.
Then some men came and told
Jehoshaphat, “A vast
army is coming against you from
Edom, from beyond the Sea; they are already in Hazazon-tamar” (that is, En-gedi).
O our God,
wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.
Our God, will You not judge them? For we are powerless before this vast army that comes against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”
And he said,
Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king
Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.
And he said, “
Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem!
Listen, King
Jehoshaphat! This is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast
army, for the battle does not belong to you, but to God.
And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of
holiness, as they went out before the
army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.
Then
Jehoshaphat consulted with the people and appointed those who would sing to the LORD and praise the
splendor of His
holiness. As they went out before the
army, they were singing: “Give
thanks to the LORD, for His loving devotion endures
forever.”
And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped.
When the men of Judah came to a place overlooking the wilderness, they looked for the vast army, but there were only corpses lying on the ground; no one had escaped.
Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds that were set over the host, and said unto them, Have her forth of the ranges: and
whoso followeth her, let him be slain with the sword. For the priest said,
Slay her not in the house of the LORD.
And Jehoiada the priest sent out the commanders of hundreds in charge of the
army, saying, “Bring her out between the ranks, and put to the sword
anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the house of the LORD.”
And it came to pass at the end of the year, that the host of Syria came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the
spoil of them unto the king of Damascus.
In the spring, the
army of
Aram went to war against
Joash. They entered Judah and Jerusalem and destroyed all the leaders of the people, and they sent all the
plunder to their king in Damascus.
For the
army of the Syrians came with a small company of men, and the LORD delivered a very great host into their hand, because they had
forsaken the LORD God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against
Joash.
Although the
Aramean army had come with only a few men, the LORD delivered into their hand a very great
army. Because Judah had
forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers, judgment was executed on
Joash.
Moreover
Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle
spear and shield.
Then
Amaziah gathered the people of Judah and assigned them according to their families to commanders of thousands and of hundreds. And he numbered those twenty years of age or older throughout Judah and Benjamin and found 300,000 chosen men able to serve in the
army, bearing the
spear and shield.
But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the LORD is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim.
But a man of God came to him and said, “O king, do not let the army of Israel go with you, for the LORD is not with Israel—not with any of the Ephraimites.
And
Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the
army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The LORD is able to give thee much more than this.
Amaziah asked the man of God, “What should I do about the hundred talents I have given to the
army of Israel?” And the man of God replied, “The LORD is able to give you much more than this.”
Then
Amaziah separated them, to wit, the
army that was come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again: wherefore their anger was greatly
kindled against Judah, and they returned home in great anger.
So
Amaziah dismissed the troops who had come to him from Ephraim and sent them home. And they were
furious with Judah and returned home in great anger.
And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Judah carry away
captive, and brought them unto the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces.
and the
army of Judah also captured 10,000 men alive. They took them to the top of a
cliff and threw them down so that all were
dashed to pieces.
But the soldiers of the
army which
Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Beth-horon, and
smote three thousand of them, and took much
spoil.
Meanwhile the troops that
Amaziah had dismissed from battle
raided the cities of Judah, from Samaria to Beth-horon. They struck down 3,000 people and carried off a great deal of
plunder.
Moreover Uzziah had an host of fighting men, that went out to war by bands, according to the number of their account by the hand of Jeiel the
scribe and Maaseiah the ruler, under the hand of Hananiah, one of the king’s captains.
Uzziah had an
army ready for battle that went out to war by assigned divisions, as recorded by Jeiel the
scribe and Maaseiah the officer under the direction of Hananiah, one of the royal officers.
