And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that
Elijah said unto
Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken
away from thee. And
Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
After they had crossed over,
Elijah said to
Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken
away from you?” “Please, let me
inherit a double portion of your spirit,”
Elisha replied.
And he wrought evil in the sight of the LORD; but not like his father, and like his mother: for he put
away the image of
Baal that his father had made.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, but not as his father and mother had done. He removed the sacred
pillar of
Baal that his father had made.
Nevertheless he
cleaved unto the sins of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not
therefrom.
Nevertheless, he
clung to the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn
away from them.
And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her
away. And the man of God said, Let her alone; for her soul is
vexed within her: and the LORD hath
hid it from me, and hath not told me.
When she reached the man of God at the mountain, she
clung to his feet. Gehazi came over to
push her
away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone, for her soul is in deep distress, and the LORD has hidden it from me and has not told me.”
Then he returned, and walked in the house to and
fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child
sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.
Elisha turned
away and
paced back and forth across the room. Then he got on the bed and stretched himself out over the boy again, and the boy
sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.
And the Syrians had gone out by companies, and had brought
away captive out of the land of Israel a little
maid; and she waited on
Naaman’s wife.
At this time the Arameans had gone out in bands and had taken a young
girl from the land of Israel, and she was serving
Naaman’s wife.
But
Naaman was
wroth, and went
away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the LORD his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the
leper.
But
Naaman went
away angry, saying, “I thought that he would surely come out, stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand over the spot to cure my
leprosy.
Are not
Abana and
Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went
away in a
rage.
Are not the Abanah and
Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not have washed in them and been
cleansed?” So he turned and went
away in a
rage.
And he prepared great provision for them: and when they had eaten and
drunk, he sent them
away, and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.
So the king prepared a great feast for them, and after they had finished eating and drinking, he sent them
away, and they returned to their master. And the
Aramean raiders did not come into the land of Israel again.
But
Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from before him: but
ere the
messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take
away mine head? look, when the
messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?
Now
Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a
messenger ahead, but before he arrived,
Elisha said to the elders, “Do you see how this murderer has sent someone to cut off my head? Look, when the
messenger comes, shut the door to keep him out. Is not the sound of his master’s footsteps behind him?”
And they went after them unto Jordan: and, lo, all the way was full of garments and vessels, which the Syrians had cast
away in their
haste. And the messengers returned, and told the king.
And they
tracked them as far as the Jordan, and indeed, the whole way was
littered with the clothing and
equipment the Arameans had thrown off in
haste. So the scouts returned and told the king.
And when thou comest thither, look out there
Jehu the son of
Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi, and go in, and make him arise up from among his brethren, and carry him to an inner chamber;
When you arrive, look for
Jehu son of
Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi. Go in, get him
away from his companions, and take him to an inner room.
Howbeit from the sins of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin,
Jehu departed not from after them, to wit, the golden
calves that were in
Bethel, and that were in
Dan.
but he did not turn
away from the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit—the worship of the golden
calves at
Bethel and
Dan.
But
Jehu took no
heed to walk in the law of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart: for he departed not from the sins of
Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin.
Yet
Jehu was not careful to follow the instruction of the LORD, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn
away from the sins that
Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit.
But Jehosheba daughter of King
Joram, the sister of
Ahaziah, took
Joash son of
Ahaziah and
stole him
away from among the sons of the king who were being murdered. She put him and his
nurse in a
bedroom to hide him from
Athaliah, and he was not killed.
But the high places were not taken away: the people still sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.
Nevertheless, the high places were not removed; the people continued sacrificing and burning incense there.
And Jehoash king of Judah took all the
hallowed things that
Jehoshaphat, and Jehoram, and
Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own
hallowed things, and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and in the king’s house, and sent it to
Hazael king of Syria: and he went
away from Jerusalem.
So King
Joash of Judah took all the sacred objects dedicated by his fathers—
Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and
Ahaziah, the kings of Judah—along with his own consecrated items and all the gold found in the
treasuries of the house of the LORD and the royal palace, and he sent them to
Hazael king of
Aram. So
Hazael withdrew from Jerusalem.
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, and followed the sins of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not
therefrom.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD and followed the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn
away from them.
Nevertheless they departed not from the sins of the house of
Jeroboam, who made Israel sin, but walked therein: and there remained the
grove also in Samaria.)
Nevertheless, they did not turn
away from the sins that the house of
Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit, but they continued to walk in them. The Asherah pole even remained standing in Samaria.
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD; he departed not from all the sins of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel sin: but he walked therein.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD and did not turn
away from all the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit, but he walked in them.
Howbeit the high places were not taken
away: as yet the people did sacrifice and burnt incense on the high places.
Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away, and the people continued sacrificing and burning incense on the high places.
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not from all the sins of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD and did not turn
away from all the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit.
Save that the high places were not removed: the people sacrificed and burnt incense still on the high places.
Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away; the people continued sacrificing and burning incense there.
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as his fathers had done: he departed not from the sins of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, as his fathers had done. He did not turn
away from the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit.
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not all his days from the sins of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, and throughout his reign he did not turn
away from the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit.
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not from the sins of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD and did not turn
away from the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit.
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not from the sins of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD and did not turn
away from the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit.
Howbeit the high places were not removed: the people sacrificed and burned incense still in the high places. He built the higher gate of the house of the LORD.
Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away; the people continued sacrificing and burning incense there. Jotham rebuilt the Upper Gate of the house of the LORD.
In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away into Assyria, and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.
In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria and carried away the Israelites to Assyria, where he settled them in Halah, in Gozan by the Habor River, and in the cities of the Medes.
And there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the heathen whom the LORD carried
away before them; and wrought wicked things to
provoke the LORD to anger:
They burned incense on all the high places like the nations that the LORD had driven out before them. They did wicked things,
provoking the LORD to anger.
For he rent Israel from the house of David; and they made
Jeroboam the son of Nebat king: and
Jeroboam drave Israel from following the LORD, and made them sin a great sin.
When the LORD had
torn Israel
away from the house of David, they made
Jeroboam son of Nebat king, and
Jeroboam led Israel
away from following the LORD and caused them to commit a great sin.
For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of
Jeroboam which he did; they departed not from them;
The Israelites
persisted in all the sins that
Jeroboam had committed and did not turn
away from them.
Until the LORD removed Israel out of his sight, as he had said by all his servants the prophets. So was Israel carried away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day.
Finally, the LORD removed Israel from His presence, as He had declared through all His servants the prophets. So Israel was exiled from their homeland into Assyria, where they are to this day.
Then one of the priests whom they had carried
away from Samaria came and dwelt in
Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the LORD.
Thus one of the priests they had carried
away came and lived in
Bethel, and he began to teach them how they should worship the LORD.
They feared the LORD, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence.
They worshiped the LORD, but they also served their own gods according to the customs of the nations from which they had been carried away.
And the king of Assyria did carry away Israel unto Assyria, and put them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes:
The king of Assyria exiled the Israelites to Assyria and settled them in Halah, in Gozan by the Habor River, and in the cities of the Medes.
But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars
Hezekiah hath taken
away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?
But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ is He not the One whose high places and altars
Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem: ‘You must worship before this altar in Jerusalem’?
How then
wilt thou turn
away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for
chariots and for
horsemen?
For how can you
repel a single officer among the least of my master’s servants when you depend on Egypt for
chariots and
horsemen?
Until I come and take you
away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and
hearken not unto
Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The LORD will deliver us.
until I come and take you
away to a land like your own—a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey—so that you may live and not die. But do not
listen to
Hezekiah, for he misleads you when he says, ‘The LORD will deliver us.’
And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt
beget, shall they take
away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.
And some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood, will be taken away to be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.”
And he put down the
idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto
Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.
Josiah also did
away with the
idolatrous priests ordained by the kings of Judah to burn incense on the high places of the cities of Judah and in the places all around Jerusalem—those who had burned incense to
Baal, to the sun and moon, to the constellations, and to all the host of heaven.
And he took
away the horses that the kings of Judah had given to the sun, at the entering in of the house of the LORD, by the chamber of
Nathan-melech the
chamberlain, which was in the suburbs, and burned the
chariots of the sun with fire.
And he removed from the entrance to the house of the LORD the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun. They were in the court near the chamber of an official named
Nathan-melech. And
Josiah burned up the
chariots of the sun.
And all the houses also of the high places that were in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made to
provoke the LORD to anger,
Josiah took
away, and did to them according to all the acts that he had done in
Bethel.
Just as
Josiah had done at
Bethel, so also in the cities of Samaria he removed all the shrines of the high places set up by the kings of Israel who had
provoked the LORD to anger.
Moreover the workers with familiar spirits, and the wizards, and the images, and the idols, and all the abominations that were
spied in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, did
Josiah put
away, that he might perform the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the LORD.
Furthermore,
Josiah removed the mediums and spiritists, the household gods and idols, and all the abominations that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem. He did this to carry out the words of the law written in the book that Hilkiah the priest had found in the house of the LORD.
Notwithstanding the LORD turned not from the fierceness of his great wrath,
wherewith his anger was
kindled against Judah, because of all the provocations that
Manasseh had
provoked him
withal.
Nevertheless, the LORD did not turn
away from the
fury of His burning anger, which was
kindled against Judah because of all that
Manasseh had done to
provoke Him to anger.
And Pharaoh-nechoh made Eliakim the son of
Josiah king in the room of
Josiah his father, and turned his name to
Jehoiakim, and took
Jehoahaz away: and he came to Egypt, and died there.
Then Pharaoh Neco made Eliakim son of
Josiah king in place of his father
Josiah, and he changed Eliakim’s name to
Jehoiakim. But Neco took
Jehoahaz and carried him off to Egypt, where he died.
And he carried
away all Jerusalem, and all the princes, and all the mighty men of valour, even ten thousand
captives, and all the
craftsmen and smiths: none remained, save the poorest sort of the people of the land.
He carried into exile all Jerusalem—all the commanders and mighty men of
valor, all the
craftsmen and metalsmiths—ten thousand
captives in all. Only the poorest people of the land remained.
And he carried
away Jehoiachin to Babylon, and the king’s mother, and the king’s wives, and his officers, and the mighty of the land, those carried he into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon.
Nebuchadnezzar carried
away Jehoiachin to Babylon, as well as the king’s mother, his wives, his officials, and the leading men of the land. He took them into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.
Now the rest of the people that were left in the city, and the fugitives that fell
away to the king of Babylon, with the
remnant of the multitude, did Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carry
away.
Then Nebuzaradan captain of the guard carried into exile the people who remained in the city, along with the deserters who had defected to the king of Babylon and the rest of the population.
And the pots, and the shovels, and the
snuffers, and the spoons, and all the vessels of brass
wherewith they ministered, took they
away.
They also took
away the pots, shovels,
wick trimmers, dishes, and all the articles of bronze used in the temple service.
And the firepans, and the
bowls, and such things as were of gold, in gold, and of silver, in silver, the captain of the guard took
away.
The captain of the guard also took
away the censers and
sprinkling bowls—anything made of pure gold or fine silver.
And the captain of the guard took Seraiah the chief priest, and
Zephaniah the second priest, and the three keepers of the door:
The captain of the guard also took
away Seraiah the chief priest,
Zephaniah the priest of second rank, and the three doorkeepers.
And the king of Babylon
smote them, and
slew them at Riblah in the land of
Hamath. So Judah was carried
away out of their land.
There at Riblah in the land of
Hamath, the king of Babylon struck them down and put them to death. So Judah was taken into exile,
away from its own land.
Beerah his son, whom Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria carried
away captive: he was prince of the Reubenites.
and Beerah his son, whom Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria carried into exile.
And they took
away their cattle; of their camels fifty thousand, and of sheep two hundred and fifty thousand, and of
asses two thousand, and of men an hundred thousand.
They seized the
livestock of the Hagrites—50,000 camels, 250,000 sheep, and 2,000
donkeys. They also took 100,000
captives,
And the God of Israel
stirred up the spirit of
Pul king of Assyria, and the spirit of Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria, and he carried them
away, even the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of
Manasseh, and brought them unto Halah, and Habor, and Hara, and to the river Gozan, unto this day.
So the God of Israel
stirred up the spirit of
Pul king of Assyria (that is, Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria) to take the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh into exile. And he brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river of Gozan, where they remain to this day.
And Jehozadak went into captivity, when the LORD carried
away Judah and Jerusalem by the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar.
Jehozadak went into captivity when the LORD sent Judah and Jerusalem into exile by the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar.
And Zabad his son, and Shuthelah his son, and Ezer, and Elead, whom the men of
Gath that were born in that land
slew, because they came down to take
away their cattle.
Shuthelah, Bered his son, Tahath his son, Eleadah his son, Tahath his son, Zabad his son, and Shuthelah his son. Ezer and Elead were killed by the natives of
Gath, because they went down to
steal their
livestock.
And Shaharaim
begat children in the country of Moab, after he had sent them
away; Hushim and Baara were his wives.
Shaharaim had sons in the country of Moab after he had
divorced his wives Hushim and Baara.
Beriah also, and Shema, who were heads of the fathers of the inhabitants of
Aijalon, who drove
away the inhabitants of
Gath:
Eber, Misham, Shemed (who built Ono and Lod with its villages), and Beriah and Shema (who were the heads of families of the inhabitants of
Aijalon and who drove out the inhabitants of
Gath).
So all Israel were reckoned by
genealogies; and, behold, they were written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah, who were carried
away to Babylon for their
transgression.
So all Israel was recorded in the
genealogies written in the Book of the Kings of Israel. But Judah was exiled to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness.
And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, then they
forsook their cities, and fled: and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
When all the Israelites in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their cities and ran away. So the Philistines came and occupied their cities.
They arose, all the
valiant men, and took
away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to
Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oak in
Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
all their men of
valor set out and
retrieved the bodies of Saul and his sons and brought them to
Jabesh. And they buried their bones under the oak in
Jabesh and fasted seven days.
And there fell some of
Manasseh to David, when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle: but they helped them not: for the lords of the Philistines upon
advisement sent him
away, saying, He will fall to his master Saul to the
jeopardy of our heads.
Some from
Manasseh defected to David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. (They did not help the Philistines because the
Philistine rulers consulted and sent David
away, saying, “It will cost us our heads if he defects to his master Saul.”)
Moreover they that were
nigh them, even unto
Issachar and
Zebulun and
Naphtali, brought bread on
asses, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen, and meat, meal, cakes of figs, and bunches of
raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep abundantly: for there was joy in Israel.
And their neighbors from as far
away as
Issachar,
Zebulun, and
Naphtali came bringing food on
donkeys, camels, mules, and oxen—abundant supplies of flour, fig cakes and
raisin cakes, wine and oil, oxen and sheep. Indeed, there was joy in Israel.
Therefore David enquired again of God; and God said unto him, Go not up after them; turn
away from them, and come upon them over against the
mulberry trees.
So David again inquired of God, who answered him, “Do not march up after them, but circle around them and attack them in front of the
balsam trees.
I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee:
I will be his Father, and he will be My son. And I will never remove My loving devotion from him as I removed it from your predecessor.
Wherefore Hanun took David’s servants, and
shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them
away.
So Hanun took David’s servants,
shaved their beards, cut off their garments at the hips, and sent them
away.
And David said unto God, I have
sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I
beseech thee, do
away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very
foolishly.
Then David said to God, “I have
sinned greatly because I have done this thing. Now I
beg You to take
away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have acted very
foolishly.”
Either three years’ famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the
pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore
advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.
between three years of famine, three months of being swept
away before your enemies and overtaken by their swords, or three days of the sword of the LORD—days of plague upon the land, with the angel of the LORD
ravaging every part of Israel.’ Now then, decide how I should reply to Him who sent me.”
If they sin against thee, (for there is no man which sinneth not,) and thou be
angry with them, and deliver them over before their enemies, and they carry them
away captives unto a land far off or near;
When they sin against You—for there is no one who does not sin—and You become
angry with them and deliver them to an enemy who takes them as
captives to a land far or near,
O LORD God, turn not
away the face of thine
anointed: remember the
mercies of David thy servant.
O LORD God, do not
reject Your
anointed one. Remember Your loving devotion to Your servant David.”
And on the three and
twentieth day of the seventh month he sent the people
away into their tents,
glad and
merry in heart for the goodness that the LORD had shewed unto David, and to Solomon, and to Israel his people.
On the twenty-third day of the seventh month, Solomon sent the people
away to their homes, joyful and
glad of heart for the good things that the LORD had done for David, for Solomon, and for His people Israel.
But if ye turn
away, and
forsake my statutes and my commandments, which I have set before you, and shall go and serve other gods, and worship them;
But if you turn
away and
forsake the statutes and commandments I have set before you, and if you go off to serve and worship other gods,
And the meat of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their
apparel; his cupbearers also, and their
apparel; and his
ascent by which he went up into the house of the LORD; there was no more spirit in her.
the food at his table, the seating of his servants, the service and
attire of his attendants and cupbearers, and the burnt offerings he presented at the house of the LORD, it took her breath
away.
And king Solomon gave to the queen of
Sheba all her desire,
whatsoever she asked, beside that which she had brought unto the king. So she turned, and went
away to her own land, she and her servants.
King Solomon gave the queen of
Sheba all she desired—whatever she asked—far more than she had brought the king. Then she left and returned to her own country, along with her servants.
So
Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, and took
away the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king’s house; he took all: he carried
away also the shields of gold which Solomon had made.
So King
Shishak of Egypt attacked Jerusalem and seized the treasures of the house of the LORD and of the royal palace. He took everything, including the gold shields that Solomon had made.
And when he humbled himself, the wrath of the LORD turned from him that he would not destroy him altogether: and also in Judah things went well.
Because
Rehoboam humbled himself, the anger of the LORD turned
away from him, and He did not destroy him completely. Indeed, conditions were good in Judah.
For he took
away the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and
brake down the images, and cut down the groves:
He removed the foreign altars and high places,
shattered the sacred pillars, and
chopped down the Asherah poles.
Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the images: and the kingdom was quiet before him.
He also removed the high places and incense altars from all the cities of Judah, and under him the kingdom was at peace.
And
Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto
Gerar: and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before the LORD, and before his host; and they carried
away very much
spoil.
Then
Asa and his army pursued them as far as
Gerar. The Cushites fell and could not recover, for they were
crushed before the LORD and His army. So the people of Judah carried off a great amount of
plunder They
smote also the tents of cattle, and carried
away sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.
They also attacked the tents of the herdsmen and carried off many sheep and camels. Then they returned to Jerusalem.
And when
Asa heard these words, and the prophecy of
Oded the prophet, he took courage, and put
away the
abominable idols out of all the land of Judah and Benjamin, and out of the cities which he had taken from mount Ephraim, and renewed the altar of the LORD, that was before the
porch of the LORD.
When
Asa heard these words and the prophecy of
Azariah son of
Oded the prophet, he took courage and removed the
detestable idols from the whole land of Judah and Benjamin and from the cities he had captured in the hill country of Ephraim. He then restored the altar of the LORD that was in front of the
portico of the LORD’s temple.
But the high places were not taken
away out of Israel: nevertheless the heart of
Asa was perfect all his days.
The high places were not removed from Israel, but
Asa’s heart was fully devoted all his days.
Then King
Asa brought all the men of Judah, and they carried
away the stones of
Ramah and the timbers
Baasha had used for building. And with these materials he built up Geba and
Mizpah.
And his heart was lifted up in the ways of the LORD: moreover he took away the high places and groves out of Judah.
And his heart took delight in the ways of the LORD;
furthermore, he removed the high places and Asherah poles from Judah.
And it came to pass, when the captains of the
chariots saw
Jehoshaphat, that they said, It is the king of Israel. Therefore they compassed about him to fight: but
Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped him; and God moved them to depart from him.
When the
chariot commanders saw
Jehoshaphat, they said, “This is the king of Israel!” So they turned to fight against him, but
Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped him. God drew them
away from him.
Nevertheless there are good things found in thee, in that thou hast taken away the groves out of the land, and hast prepared thine heart to seek God.
However, some good is found in you, for you have removed the Asherah poles from the land and have set your heart on seeking God.”
And now, behold, the children of
Ammon and Moab and mount
Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel
invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them not;
And now, here are the men of
Ammon, Moab, and Mount
Seir, whom You did not let Israel
invade when they came out of the land of Egypt; but Israel turned
away from them and did not destroy them.
And when
Jehoshaphat and his people came to take
away the
spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they
stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry
away: and they were three days in gathering of the
spoil, it was so much.
Then
Jehoshaphat and his people went to carry off the
plunder, and they found on the bodies an abundance of goods and valuables—more than they could carry
away. They were gathering the
plunder for three days because there was so much.
And he walked in the way of
Asa his father, and departed not from it, doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD.
And
Jehoshaphat walked in the way of his father
Asa and did not turn
away from it; he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD.
Howbeit the high places were not taken
away: for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts unto the God of their fathers.
The high places, however, were not removed; the people had not yet set their hearts on the God of their fathers.
And they came up into Judah, and
brake into it, and carried
away all the substance that was found in the king’s house, and his sons also, and his wives; so that there was never a son left him, save
Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.
So they went to war against Judah, invaded it, and carried off all the possessions found in the king’s palace, along with his sons and wives; not a son was left to him except
Jehoahaz, his youngest.
But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took
Joash the son of
Ahaziah, and
stole him from among the king’s sons that were slain, and put him and his
nurse in a
bedchamber. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of king Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest, (for she was the sister of
Ahaziah,)
hid him from
Athaliah, so that she
slew him not.
But Jehoshabeath daughter of King Jehoram took
Joash son of
Ahaziah and
stole him
away from among the sons of the king who were being murdered, and she put him and his
nurse in a
bedroom. Because Jehoshabeath, the daughter of King Jehoram and the wife of Jehoiada the priest, was
Ahaziah’s sister, she
hid Joash from
Athaliah so that she could not kill him.
And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Judah carry
away captive, and brought them unto the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces.
and the army of Judah also captured 10,000 men alive. They took them to the top of a
cliff and threw them down so that all were
dashed to pieces.
Now after the time that
Amaziah did turn
away from following the LORD they made a
conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to
Lachish: but they sent to
Lachish after him, and
slew him there.
From the time that
Amaziah turned from following the LORD, a
conspiracy was formed against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to
Lachish. But men were sent after him to
Lachish, and they killed him there.
Wherefore the LORD his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria; and they
smote him, and carried
away a great multitude of them
captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who
smote him with a great slaughter.
So the LORD his God delivered
Ahaz into the hand of the king of
Aram, who attacked him and took many
captives to Damascus.
Ahaz was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who struck him with great force.
And the children of Israel carried
away captive of their brethren two hundred thousand, women, sons, and daughters, and took also
away much
spoil from them, and brought the
spoil to Samaria.
Then the Israelites took 200,000
captives from their
kinsmen—women, sons, and daughters. They also carried off a great deal of
plunder and brought it to Samaria.
For again the Edomites had come and
smitten Judah, and carried
away captives.
The Edomites had again come and attacked Judah and carried
away captives.
For
Ahaz took
away a portion out of the house of the LORD, and out of the house of the king, and of the princes, and gave it unto the king of Assyria: but he helped him not.
Although
Ahaz had taken a portion from the house of the LORD, from the royal palace, and from the princes and had presented it to the king of Assyria, it did not help him.
