For because ye did it not at the first, the LORD our God made a breach upon us, for that we sought him not after the due order.
It was
because you Levites were not with us the first time that the LORD our God
burst forth in anger against us. For we did not
consult Him about the proper order.”
And Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was for song: he
instructed about the song,
because he was skilful.
Chenaniah the head
Levite was the director of the music
because he was highly skilled.
And it came to pass, when God helped the Levites that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, that they offered seven bullocks and seven rams.
And because God helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD, they sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams.
Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence of the LORD, because he cometh to judge the earth.
Then the trees of the forest will sing for joy before the LORD, for He is coming to judge the earth.
And with them Heman and
Jeduthun, and the rest that were chosen, who were expressed by name, to give
thanks to the LORD,
because his mercy endureth for ever;
With them were Heman,
Jeduthun, and the rest of those chosen and designated by name to give
thanks to the LORD, for “His loving devotion endures
forever.”
He sent Hadoram his son to king David, to
enquire of his
welfare, and to
congratulate him,
because he had fought against Hadarezer, and
smitten him; (for Hadarezer had war with Tou;) and with him all manner of vessels of gold and silver and brass.
he sent his son Hadoram to
greet King David and
bless him for fighting and defeating Hadadezer, who had been at war with Tou. Hadoram brought all kinds of articles of gold and silver and bronze,
And David said, I will
shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash,
because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of
Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.
And David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash,
because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent messengers to
console Hanun concerning his father. But when David’s servants arrived in the land of the
Ammonites to
console him,
But the princes of the children of
Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David
doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to
spy out the land?
the princes of the
Ammonites said to Hanun, “Just
because David has sent you comforters, do you really believe he is showing respect for your father? Have not his servants come to you to
explore the land,
spy it out, and overthrow it?”
But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king’s word was
abominable to
Joab.
But
Joab did not include Levi and Benjamin in the count,
because the king’s command was
detestable to him.
And David said unto God, I have
sinned greatly,
because I have done this thing: but now, I
beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very
foolishly.
Then David said to God, “I have
sinned greatly
because I have done this thing. Now I
beg You to take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have acted very
foolishly.”
But David could not go before it to
enquire of God: for he was afraid
because of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
but David could not go before it to inquire of God, because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
But the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build an house unto my name, because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth in my sight.
but this word of the LORD came to me: ‘You have shed much blood and
waged great wars. You are not to build a house for My Name
because you have shed so much blood on the ground before Me.
Because their office was to wait on the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the LORD, in the courts, and in the chambers, and in the
purifying of all holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God;
but their duty was to assist the descendants of Aaron with the service of the house of the LORD, being responsible for the courts and chambers, the
purification of all the holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God,
Also unto Shemaiah his son were sons born, that ruled throughout the house of their father: for they were mighty men of valour.
Also to his son Shemaiah were born sons who ruled over their families because they were strong, capable men.
But David took not the number of them from twenty years old and under: because the LORD had said he would increase Israel like to the stars of the heavens.
David did not count the men aged twenty or under, because the LORD had said that He would make Israel as numerous as the stars of the sky.
Joab the son of Zeruiah began to number, but he finished not,
because there fell wrath for it against Israel; neither was the number put in the account of the chronicles of king David.
Joab son of Zeruiah began to count the men but did not finish. For
because of this census wrath came upon Israel, and the number was not entered in the Book of the Chronicles of King David.
But God said unto me, Thou shalt not build an house for my name, because thou hast been a man of war, and hast shed blood.
but God said to me, ‘You are not to build a house for My Name,
because you are a man of war who has
spilled blood.’
Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but for the LORD God.
Then King David said to the whole assembly, “My son Solomon, the one whom God has chosen, is young and inexperienced. The task is great because this palace is not for man, but for the LORD God.
Moreover, because I have set my affection to the house of my God, I have of mine own proper good, of gold and silver, which I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house,
Moreover, because of my delight in the house of my God, I now give for it my personal treasures of gold and silver, over and above all that I have provided for this holy temple:
Then the people
rejoiced, for that they offered willingly,
because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the LORD: and David the king also
rejoiced with great joy.
And the people
rejoiced at the willing
response of their leaders, for they had given to the LORD freely and wholeheartedly. And King David also
rejoiced greatly.
So Solomon, and all the congregation with him, went to the high place that was at
Gibeon; for there was the tabernacle of the congregation of God, which Moses the servant of the LORD had made in the wilderness.
And Solomon and the whole assembly went to the high place at
Gibeon because it was the
location of God’s Tent of Meeting, which Moses the servant of the LORD had made in the wilderness.
But the ark of God had David brought up from Kirjath-jearim to the place which David had prepared for it: for he had pitched a tent for it at Jerusalem.
Now David had brought the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim to the place he had prepared for it, because he had pitched a tent for it in Jerusalem.
And God said to Solomon,
Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for
thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king:
God said to Solomon, “Since this was in your heart instead of requesting riches or wealth or glory for
yourself or death for your enemies—and since you have not even requested long life but have asked for wisdom and knowledge to
govern My people over whom I have made you king—
Even to prepare me timber in abundance: for the house which I am about to build shall be wonderful great.
to prepare for me timber in abundance, because the temple I am building will be great and wonderful.
Then Huram the king of Tyre answered in writing, which he sent to Solomon, Because the LORD hath loved his people, he hath made thee king over them.
Then
Hiram king of Tyre wrote a letter in reply to Solomon: “
Because the LORD loves His people, He has set you over them as king.”
So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God.
so that the priests could not stand there to minister because of the cloud; for the glory of the LORD filled the house of God.
And if thy people Israel be put to the worse before the enemy,
because they have
sinned against thee; and shall return and
confess thy name, and pray and make
supplication before thee in this house;
When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy
because they have
sinned against You, and they return to You and
confess Your name, praying and
pleading before You in this temple,
When the heaven is shut up, and there is no rain,
because they have
sinned against thee; yet if they pray toward this place, and
confess thy name, and turn from their sin, when thou
dost afflict them;
When the
skies are shut and there is no rain
because Your people have
sinned against You, and they pray toward this place and
confess Your name, and they turn from their sins
because You have
afflicted them,
Moreover concerning the stranger, which is not of thy people Israel, but is come from a far country for thy great name’s sake, and thy mighty hand, and thy stretched out arm; if they come and pray in this house;
And as for the foreigner who is not of Your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of Your great name and Your mighty hand and outstretched arm—when he comes and prays toward this temple,
And the priests could not enter into the house of the LORD, because the glory of the LORD had filled the LORD’S house.
The priests were unable to enter the house of the LORD, because the glory of the LORD had filled it.
And the priests waited on their offices: the Levites also with instruments of musick of the LORD, which David the king had made to praise the LORD,
because his mercy endureth for ever, when David praised by their ministry; and the priests sounded
trumpets before them, and all Israel stood.
The priests stood at their posts, as did the Levites with the musical instruments of the LORD, which King David had made for giving
thanks to the LORD and with which David had offered praise, saying, “For His loving devotion endures
forever.” Across from the Levites, the priests sounded
trumpets, and all the Israelites were standing.
Moreover Solomon
hallowed the middle of the court that was before the house of the LORD: for there he offered burnt offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings,
because the
brasen altar which Solomon had made was not able to receive the burnt offerings, and the meat offerings, and the fat.
Then Solomon consecrated the middle of the
courtyard in front of the house of the LORD, and there he offered the burnt offerings and the fat of the peace offerings, since the bronze altar he had made could not contain all these offerings.
And it shall be answered,
Because they
forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, and laid hold on other gods, and worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath he brought all this evil upon them.
And others will answer, ‘
Because they have
forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them—
because of this, He has brought all this
disaster upon them.’”
But of the children of Israel did Solomon make no servants for his work; but they were men of war, and chief of his captains, and captains of his
chariots and
horsemen.
But Solomon did not
consign any of the Israelites to slave labor,
because they were his men of war, his officers and captains, and the commanders of his
chariots and cavalry.
And Solomon brought up the daughter of Pharaoh out of the city of David unto the house that he had built for her: for he said, My wife shall not dwell in the house of David king of Israel,
because the places are holy,
whereunto the ark of the LORD hath come.
Solomon brought the daughter of Pharaoh up from the City of David to the palace he had built for her. For he said, “My wife must not live in the house of David king of Israel, because the places the ark of the LORD has entered are holy.”
Blessed be the LORD thy God, which delighted in thee to set thee on his throne, to be king for the LORD thy God: because thy God loved Israel, to establish them for ever, therefore made he thee king over them, to do judgment and justice.
Blessed be the LORD your God, who has delighted in you to set you on His throne to be king for the LORD your God.
Because your God loved Israel enough to establish them
forever, He has made you king over them to carry out justice and righteousness.”
And all the drinking vessels of king Solomon were of gold, and all the vessels of the house of the forest of
Lebanon were of pure gold: none were of silver; it was not any thing accounted of in the days of Solomon.
All King Solomon’s drinking cups were gold, and all the utensils of the House of the Forest of
Lebanon were pure gold. There was no silver,
because it was accounted as nothing in the days of Solomon.
For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession, and came to Judah and Jerusalem: for
Jeroboam and his sons had cast them off from
executing the priest’s office unto the LORD:
For the Levites left their pasturelands and their possessions and went to Judah and Jerusalem,
because Jeroboam and his sons had rejected them as priests of the LORD.
So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and made
Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong, three years: for three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon.
So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah and supported
Rehoboam son of Solomon for three years,
because they walked for three years in the way of David and Solomon.
And it came to pass, that in the fifth year of king
Rehoboam Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem,
because they had
transgressed against the LORD,
In the fifth year of
Rehoboam’s reign,
because they had been unfaithful to the LORD,
Shishak king of Egypt came up and attacked Jerusalem
Then came Shemaiah the prophet to
Rehoboam, and to the princes of Judah, that were gathered together to Jerusalem
because of
Shishak, and said unto them, Thus saith the LORD, Ye have
forsaken me, and therefore have I also left you in the hand of
Shishak.
Then Shemaiah the prophet came to
Rehoboam and the leaders of Judah who had gathered at Jerusalem
because of
Shishak, and he said to them, “This is what the LORD says: ‘You have
forsaken Me; therefore, I have
forsaken you into the hand of
Shishak.’”
And when he humbled himself, the wrath of the LORD turned from him that he would not destroy him altogether: and also in Judah things went well.
Because Rehoboam humbled himself, the anger of the LORD turned away from him, and He did not destroy him completely. Indeed, conditions were good in Judah.
And he did evil, because he prepared not his heart to seek the LORD.
And
Rehoboam did evil
because he did not set his heart to seek the LORD.
Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed,
because they
relied upon the LORD God of their fathers.
Thus the Israelites were subdued at that time, and the men of Judah prevailed
because they
relied on the LORD, the God of their fathers.
And he built
fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years;
because the LORD had given him rest.
Because the land was at peace,
Asa built fortified cities in Judah. In those days no one made war with him,
because the LORD had given him rest.
Therefore he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us;
because we have sought the LORD our God, we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and
prospered.
So he said to the people of Judah, “Let us build these cities and
surround them with walls and towers, with doors and bars. The land is still ours
because we have sought the LORD our God. We have sought Him and He has given us rest on every side.” So they built and
prospered.
And they
smote all the cities round about
Gerar; for the fear of the LORD came upon them: and they
spoiled all the cities; for there was exceeding much
spoil in them.
and attacked all the cities around
Gerar,
because the terror of the LORD had fallen upon them. They
plundered all the cities, since there was much
plunder there.
And in those times there was no peace to him that went out, nor to him that came in, but great vexations were upon all the inhabitants of the countries.
In those days there was no safety for travelers, because the residents of the lands had many conflicts.
And also concerning Maachah the mother of
Asa the king, he removed her from being queen,
because she had made an
idol in a
grove: and
Asa cut down her
idol, and stamped it, and burnt it at the
brook Kidron.
And at that time Hanani the
seer came to
Asa king of Judah, and said unto him,
Because thou hast
relied on the king of Syria, and not
relied on the LORD thy God, therefore is the host of the king of Syria escaped out of thine hand.
At that time Hanani the
seer came to King
Asa of Judah and told him, “
Because you have
relied on the king of
Aram and not on the LORD your God, the army of the king of
Aram has escaped from your hand.
Were not the Ethiopians and the Lubims a huge host, with very many
chariots and
horsemen? yet,
because thou
didst rely on the LORD, he delivered them into thine hand.
Were not the Cushites and Libyans a vast army with many
chariots and
horsemen? Yet
because you
relied on the LORD, He delivered them into your hand.
Then
Asa was
wroth with the
seer, and put him in a prison house; for he was in a
rage with him
because of this thing. And
Asa oppressed some of the people the same time.
And the LORD was with
Jehoshaphat,
because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and sought not unto
Baalim;
Now the LORD was with
Jehoshaphat because he walked in the earlier ways of his father David. He did not seek out the Baals,
And the king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, by whom we may
enquire of the LORD: but I
hate him; for he never
prophesied good unto me, but always evil: the same is Micaiah the son of Imla. And
Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.
The king of Israel answered, “There is still one man who can ask the LORD, but I
hate him
because he never prophesies anything good for me, but only bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.” “The king should not say that!”
Jehoshaphat replied.
And
Jehu the son of Hanani the
seer went out to meet him, and said to king
Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that
hate the LORD? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the LORD.
Jehu son of Hanani the
seer went out to
confront him and said to King
Jehoshaphat, “Should you help the wicked and love those who
hate the LORD?
Because of this, the wrath of the LORD is upon you.
And he said,
Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king
Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.
And he said, “
Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem!
Listen, King
Jehoshaphat! This is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged
because of this vast army, for the battle does not belong to you, but to God.
And when
Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the
spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they
stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering of the
spoil, it was so much.
Then
Jehoshaphat and his people went to carry off the
plunder, and they found on the bodies an abundance of goods and valuables—more than they could carry away. They were gathering the
plunder for three days
because there was so much.
And their father gave them great gifts of silver, and of gold, and of precious things, with
fenced cities in Judah: but the kingdom gave he to Jehoram;
because he was the
firstborn.
Their father had given them many gifts of silver and gold and precious things, as well as the fortified cities in Judah; but he gave the kingdom to Jehoram
because he was the
firstborn.
Howbeit the LORD would not destroy the house of David,
because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever.
Yet the LORD was unwilling to destroy the house of David,
because of the covenant He had made with David, and since He had promised to maintain a lamp for David and his descendants
forever.
So the Edomites revolted from under the hand of Judah unto this day. The same time also did
Libnah revolt from under his hand;
because he had
forsaken the LORD God of his fathers.
So to this day
Edom has been in rebellion against the hand of Judah. Likewise,
Libnah rebelled against his rule at the same time,
because Jehoram had
forsaken the LORD, the God of his fathers.
And there came a writing to him from
Elijah the prophet, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of David thy father,
Because thou hast not walked in the ways of
Jehoshaphat thy father, nor in the ways of
Asa king of Judah,
Then a letter came to Jehoram from
Elijah the prophet, which stated: “This is what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: ‘You have not walked in the ways of your father
Jehoshaphat or of
Asa king of Judah,
And it came to pass, that in process of time, after the end of two years, his
bowels fell out by reason of his sickness: so he died of
sore diseases. And his people made no burning for him, like the burning of his fathers.
This continued day after day until two full years had passed. Finally, his intestines came out because of his disease, and he died in severe pain. And his people did not make a fire in his honor as they had done for his fathers.
And he returned to be
healed in
Jezreel because of the wounds which were given him at
Ramah, when he fought with
Hazael king of Syria. And
Azariah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Jehoram the son of
Ahab at
Jezreel,
because he was sick.
so he returned to
Jezreel to recover from the wounds they had inflicted on him at
Ramah when he fought against
Hazael king of
Aram. Then
Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to
Jezreel to visit
Joram son of
Ahab,
because Joram had been wounded.
And he sought
Ahaziah: and they caught him, (for he was
hid in Samaria,) and brought him to
Jehu: and when they had slain him, they buried him:
Because, said they, he is the son of
Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart. So the house of
Ahaziah had no power to keep still the kingdom.
Then
Jehu looked for
Ahaziah, and
Jehu’s soldiers captured him while he was hiding in Samaria. So
Ahaziah was brought to
Jehu and put to death. They buried him, for they said, “He is the grandson of
Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart.” So no one was left from the house of
Ahaziah with the strength to rule the kingdom.
But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took
Joash the son of
Ahaziah, and
stole him from among the king’s sons that were slain, and put him and his
nurse in a
bedchamber. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of king Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest, (for she was the sister of
Ahaziah,)
hid him from
Athaliah, so that she
slew him not.
But Jehoshabeath daughter of King Jehoram took
Joash son of
Ahaziah and
stole him away from among the sons of the king who were being murdered, and she put him and his
nurse in a
bedroom.
Because Jehoshabeath, the daughter of King Jehoram and the wife of Jehoiada the priest, was
Ahaziah’s sister, she
hid Joash from
Athaliah so that she could not kill him.
But let none come into the house of the LORD, save the priests, and they that minister of the Levites; they shall go in, for they are holy: but all the people shall keep the watch of the LORD.
No one is to enter the house of the LORD except the priests and those Levites who serve; they may enter because they are consecrated, but all the people are to obey the requirement of the LORD.
And all the people of the land
rejoiced: and the city was quiet, after that they had slain
Athaliah with the sword.
and all the people of the land
rejoiced. And the city was quiet,
because Athaliah had been put to the sword.
And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both toward God, and toward his house.
And Jehoiada was buried with the kings in the City of David, because he had done what was good in Israel for God and His temple.
And the Spirit of God came upon
Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why
transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot
prosper?
because ye have
forsaken the LORD, he hath also
forsaken you.
Then the Spirit of God came upon
Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest, who stood up before the people and said to them, “This is what God says: ‘Why do you
transgress the commandments of the LORD so that you cannot
prosper?
Because you have
forsaken the LORD, He has
forsaken you.’”
For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men, and the LORD delivered a very great host into their hand,
because they had
forsaken the LORD God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against
Joash.
Although the
Aramean army had come with only a few men, the LORD delivered into their hand a very great army.
Because Judah had
forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers, judgment was executed on
Joash.
And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, Art thou made of the king’s counsel?
forbear; why shouldest thou be
smitten? Then the prophet
forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee,
because thou hast done this, and hast not
hearkened unto my counsel.
While he was still speaking, the king asked, “Have we made you the
counselor to the king? Stop! Why be struck down?” So the prophet stopped, but he said, “I know that God has determined to destroy you,
because you have done this and have not
heeded my advice.”
But
Amaziah would not hear; for it came of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies,
because they sought after the gods of
Edom.
But
Amaziah would not
listen, for this had come from God in order to deliver them into the hand of Jehoash,
because they had sought the gods of
Edom.
And
Azariah the chief priest, and all the priests, looked upon him, and, behold, he was
leprous in his
forehead, and they thrust him out from thence;
yea, himself hasted also to go out,
because the LORD had
smitten him.
So Jotham became mighty, because he prepared his ways before the LORD his God.
So Jotham grew powerful because he ordered his ways before the LORD his God.
For Pekah the son of Remaliah
slew in Judah an hundred and twenty thousand in one day, which were all
valiant men;
because they had
forsaken the LORD God of their fathers.
For in one day Pekah son of Remaliah killed 120,000
valiant men in Judah. This happened
because they had
forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers.
But a prophet of the LORD was there, whose name was
Oded: and he went out before the host that came to Samaria, and said unto them, Behold,
because the LORD God of your fathers was
wroth with Judah, he hath delivered them into your hand, and ye have slain them in a
rage that reacheth up unto heaven.
But a prophet of the LORD named
Oded was there, and he went out to meet the army that returned to Samaria. “Look,” he said to them, “
because of His wrath against Judah, the LORD, the God of your fathers, has delivered them into your hand. But you have slaughtered them in a
rage that reaches up to heaven.
For the LORD brought Judah low
because of
Ahaz king of Israel; for he made Judah naked, and
transgressed sore against the LORD.
For the LORD humbled Judah
because Ahaz king of Israel had thrown off restraint in Judah and had been most unfaithful to the LORD.
For he sacrificed unto the gods of Damascus, which
smote him: and he said,
Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them, therefore will I sacrifice to them, that they may help me. But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel.
Since Damascus had defeated him, he sacrificed to their gods and said, “
Because the gods of the kings of
Aram have helped them, I will sacrifice to them that they may help me.” But these gods were the
downfall of
Ahaz and of all Israel.
And the priests killed them, and they made
reconciliation with their blood upon the altar, to make an
atonement for all Israel: for the king commanded that the burnt offering and the sin offering should be made for all Israel.
And the priests slaughtered the goats and put their blood on the altar for a sin offering, to make
atonement for all Israel,
because the king had ordered the burnt offering and the sin offering for all Israel.
And
Hezekiah rejoiced, and all the people, that God had prepared the people: for the thing was done suddenly.
Then
Hezekiah and all the people
rejoiced at what God had prepared for the people,
because everything had been accomplished so quickly.
For they could not keep it at that time,
because the priests had not
sanctified themselves sufficiently, neither had the people gathered themselves together to Jerusalem.
since they had been unable to observe it at the regular time, because not enough priests had consecrated themselves and the people had not been gathered in Jerusalem.
And
Azariah the chief priest of the house of
Zadok answered him, and said, Since the people began to bring the offerings into the house of the LORD, we have had enough to eat, and have left
plenty: for the LORD hath blessed his people; and that which is left is this great store.
and
Azariah, the chief priest of the household of
Zadok, answered him, “Since the people began to bring their contributions into the house of the LORD, we have had enough to eat and there is
plenty left over,
because the LORD has blessed His people; this great abundance is what is left over.”
But
Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
But
because his heart was proud,
Hezekiah did not repay the favor shown to him. Therefore wrath came upon him and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
Go,
enquire of the LORD for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us,
because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD, to do after all that is written in this book.
“Go and inquire of the LORD for me and for those remaining in Israel and Judah concerning the words in the book that has been found. For great is the wrath of the LORD that has been poured out on us because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD by doing all that is written in this book.”
Because they have
forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might
provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be
quenched.
because they have
forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods, that they might
provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands. My wrath will be poured out upon this place and will not be
quenched.’
Because thine heart was tender, and thou
didst humble
thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst
thyself before me, and
didst rend thy clothes, and
weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD.
because your heart was tender and you humbled
yourself before God when you heard His words against this place and against its people, and
because you have humbled
yourself before Me and you have
torn your clothes and
wept before Me, I have heard you,’ declares the LORD.
And afterward they made ready for themselves, and for the priests:
because the priests the sons of Aaron were
busied in offering of burnt offerings and the fat until night; therefore the Levites prepared for themselves, and for the priests the sons of Aaron.
Afterward, they made preparations for themselves and for the priests, since the priests, the descendants of Aaron, were offering up burnt offerings and fat until
nightfall. So the Levites made preparations for themselves and for the priests, the descendants of Aaron.
And the singers the sons of
Asaph were in their place, according to the commandment of David, and
Asaph, and Heman, and
Jeduthun the king’s
seer; and the
porters waited at every gate; they might not depart from their service; for their brethren the Levites prepared for them.
The singers, the descendants of
Asaph, were at their stations according to the command of David,
Asaph, Heman, and
Jeduthun the king’s
seer. And the gatekeepers at each gate did not need to leave their position,
because their fellow Levites made preparations for them.
And the LORD God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up
betimes, and sending;
because he had
compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place:
Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers, sent word to His people through His messengers
because He had
compassion on them and on His dwelling place.
And they set the altar upon his bases; for fear was upon them
because of the people of those countries: and they offered burnt offerings
thereon unto the LORD, even burnt offerings morning and evening.
They set up the altar on its foundation and sacrificed burnt offerings on it to the LORD—both the morning and evening burnt offerings—even though they feared the people of the land.
And they
sang together by course in praising and giving
thanks unto the LORD;
because he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever toward Israel. And all the people
shouted with a great
shout, when they praised the LORD,
because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.
And they
sang responsively with praise and
thanksgiving to the LORD: “For He is good; for His loving devotion to Israel endures
forever.” Then all the people gave a great
shout of praise to the LORD,
because the foundation of the house of the LORD had been laid.
So that the people could not
discern the noise of the
shout of joy from the noise of the
weeping of the people: for the people
shouted with a loud
shout, and the noise was heard
afar off.
The people could not distinguish the shouts of joy from the sound of
weeping,
because the people were making so much noise. And the sound was heard from
afar.
Then they came to
Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up
hither.
they approached
Zerubbabel and the heads of the families, saying, “Let us build with you
because, like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to Him since the time of King Esar-haddon of Assyria, who brought us here.”
Now
because we have maintenance from the king’s palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and
certified the king;
Now because we are in the service of the palace and it is not fitting for us to allow the king to be dishonored, we have sent to inform the king
And kept the feast of
unleavened bread seven days with joy: for the LORD had made them joyful, and turned the heart of the king of Assyria unto them, to
strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel.
For seven days they kept the Feast of
Unleavened Bread with joy,
because the LORD had made them joyful and turned the heart of the king of Assyria toward them to
strengthen their hands in the work on the house of the God of Israel.
And hath extended mercy unto me before the king, and his counsellors, and before all the king’s mighty princes. And I was strengthened as the hand of the LORD my God was upon me, and I gathered together out of Israel chief men to go up with me.
and who has shown me favor before the king, his counselors, and all his powerful officials. And because the hand of the LORD my God was upon me, I took courage and gathered the leaders of Israel to return with me.
For I was
ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and
horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way:
because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that
forsake him.
For I was
ashamed to ask the king for an
escort of soldiers and
horsemen to protect us from our enemies on the road, since we had told him, “The hand of our God is
gracious to all who seek Him, but His great anger is against all who
forsake Him.”
Then were assembled unto me every one that
trembled at the words of the God of Israel,
because of the
transgression of those that had been carried away; and I sat
astonied until the evening sacrifice.
Then
everyone who
trembled at the words of the God of Israel gathered around me
because of the unfaithfulness of the exiles, while I sat there in
horror until the evening offering.
And said, O my God, I am
ashamed and
blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our
iniquities are increased over our head, and our
trespass is grown up unto the heavens.
and said: “O my God, I am
ashamed and
embarrassed to lift up my face to You, my God,
because our
iniquities are higher than our heads, and our guilt has reached the heavens.
