And
Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I
can bear.
But
Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I
can bear.
Bring forth with thee every living thing that is with thee, of all flesh, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of every
creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth; that they may breed abundantly in the earth, and be fruitful, and multiply upon the earth.
Bring out all the living creatures that are with you—birds,
livestock, and everything that crawls upon the ground—so that they
can spread out over the earth and be fruitful and multiply upon it.”
And
Ham, the father of
Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without.

Canaan, saw his father’s nakedness and told his two brothers outside.
And he said,
Cursed be
Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.
he said, “
Cursed be
Canaan! A servant of servants shall he be to his brothers.”
And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of
Shem; and
Canaan shall be his servant.
He also declared: “Blessed be the LORD, the God of
Shem! May
Canaan be the servant of
Shem.
And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite: and afterward were the families of the
Canaanites spread abroad.
the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Later the

And Terah took
Abram his son, and Lot the son of
Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son
Abram’s wife; and they went forth with them from
Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of
Canaan; and they came unto
Haran, and dwelt there.
And Terah took his son
Abram, his grandson Lot son of
Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai the wife of
Abram, and they set out from
Ur of the Chaldeans for the land of
Canaan. But when they arrived in
Haran, they settled there.
And
Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had
gotten in
Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of
Canaan; and into the land of
Canaan they came.
And
Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all the possessions and people they had acquired in
Haran, and set out for the land of
Canaan. When they came to the land of
Canaan,
And
Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the
Canaanite was then in the land.
Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the Oak of Moreh at
Shechem. And at that time the
Canaanites were in the land.
And there was a
strife between the herdmen of
Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle: and the
Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.
And there was discord between the herdsmen of
Abram and the herdsmen of Lot. At that time the
Canaanites and the
Perizzites were also living in the land.
Abram dwelled in the land of
Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward
Sodom.
Abram lived in the land of
Canaan, but Lot settled in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent toward
Sodom.
And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.
I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if one could count the dust of the earth, then your offspring could be counted.
And
Abram said, Lord GOD, what
wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the
steward of my house is this
Eliezer of Damascus?
But
Abram replied, “O Lord GOD, what
can You give me, since I remain childless, and the heir of my house is
Eliezer of Damascus?”
And he said, Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall
inherit it?
But
Abram replied, “Lord GOD, how
can I know that I will possess it?”
And Sarai said unto
Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my
maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And
Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
So Sarai said to
Abram, “Look now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Please go to my
maidservant; perhaps I
can build a family by her.” And
Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
And Sarai
Abram’s wife took
Hagar her
maid the Egyptian, after
Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of
Canaan, and gave her to her husband
Abram to be his wife.
So after he had lived in
Canaan for ten years, his wife Sarai took her Egyptian
maidservant Hagar and gave her to
Abram to be his wife.
And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of
Canaan, for an
everlasting possession; and I will be their God.
And to you and your descendants I will give the land where you are residing—all the land of
Canaan—as an eternal possession; and I will be their God.”
Then Abraham fell upon his face, and
laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall
Sarah, that is
ninety years old, bear?
Abraham fell facedown. Then he
laughed and said to himself, “
Can a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old?
Can Sarah give birth at the age of
ninety?”
And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did
Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a
surety bear a child, which am old?
And the LORD asked Abraham, “Why did
Sarah laugh and say, ‘
Can I really bear a child when I am old?’
And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant’s house, and
tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said,
Nay; but we will
abide in the street all night.
and said, “My lords, please turn aside into the house of your servant; wash your feet and
spend the night. Then you
can rise early and go on your way.” “No,” they answered, “we will
spend the night in the square.”
And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
They called out to Lot, saying, “Where are the men who came to you
tonight? Send them out to us so we
can have relations with them!”
Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.
Look, I have two daughters who have never
slept with a man. Let me bring them to you, and you
can do to them as you please. But do not do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”
Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast
magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I
cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die:
Your servant has indeed found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness by
sparing my life. But I
cannot run to the mountains; the
disaster will overtake me, and I will die.
Behold now, this city is near to
flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.
Look, there is a town nearby where I
can flee, and it is a small place. Please let me
flee there—is it not a small place? Then my life will be saved.”
Haste thee, escape thither; for I
cannot do any thing till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.
Hurry! Run there quickly, for I
cannot do anything until you reach it.” That is why the town was called Zoar.
Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
Come, let us get our father
drunk with wine so we
can sleep with him and preserve his line.”
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that the
firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay
yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Look, I
slept with my father last night. Let us get him
drunk with wine again
tonight so you
can go in and sleep with him and we
can preserve our father’s line.”
And it came to pass, when God caused me to
wander from my father’s house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt
shew unto me; at every place
whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.
So when God had me journey from my father’s house, I said to
Sarah, ‘This is how you
can show your
loyalty to me: Wherever we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”’”
And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a
bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and
wept.
Then she went off and sat down nearby, about a
bowshot away, for she said, “I
cannot bear to watch the boy die!” And as she sat nearby, she lifted up her voice and
wept.
She died in Kiriath-arba (that is,
Hebron) in the land of
Canaan, and Abraham went out to
mourn and to
weep for her.
I am a stranger and a
sojourner with you: give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I may
bury my dead out of my sight.
“I am a foreigner and an outsider among you. Give me a burial site among you so that I
can bury my dead.”
And after this, Abraham buried
Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before
Mamre: the same is
Hebron in the land of
Canaan.
After this, Abraham buried his wife
Sarah in the cave of the field at Machpelah near
Mamre (that is,
Hebron) in the land of
Canaan.
And I will make thee
swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the
Canaanites, among whom I dwell:
and I will have you
swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the
Canaanites among whom I am dwelling,
The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that
sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence.
The LORD, the God of heaven, who brought me from my father’s house and my native land, who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give this land’—He will send His angel before you so that you can take a wife for my son from there.
And my master made me
swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the
Canaanites, in whose land I dwell:
My master made me
swear an oath and said, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the
Canaanites in whose land I dwell,
Then
Laban and
Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from the LORD: we
cannot speak unto thee bad or good.
Laban and
Bethuel answered, “This is from the LORD; we have no choice in the matter.
And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath
betwixt us, even
betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;
“We
can plainly see that the LORD has been with you,” they replied. “We
recommend that there should now be an oath between us and you. Let us make a covenant with you
Go now to the flock, and
fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats; and I will make them savoury meat for thy father, such as he loveth:
Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats, so that I
can make them into a
tasty dish for your father—the kind he loves.
And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son
Esau or not.
Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come closer so I
can touch you, my son. Are you really my son
Esau, or not?”
And Isaac answered and said unto
Esau, Behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now unto thee, my son?
But Isaac answered
Esau: “Look, I have made him your master and given him all his relatives as servants; I have sustained him with grain and new wine. What is left that I
can do for you, my son?”
And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of
Canaan.
So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him. “Do not take a wife from the
Canaanite women,” he commanded.
When
Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padan-
aram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of
Canaan;
Now
Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him to Paddan-
aram to take a wife there, commanding him, “Do not marry a
Canaanite woman,”
And
Esau seeing that the daughters of
Canaan pleased not Isaac his father;
And seeing that his father Isaac disapproved of the
Canaanite women,
And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well’s mouth; then we water the sheep.
But they replied, “We cannot, until all the flocks have been gathered and the stone has been rolled away from the mouth of the well. Then we will water the sheep.”
And she said, Behold my
maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees that I may also have children by her.
Then she said, “Here is my
maidservant Bilhah. Sleep with her, that she may bear children for me, so that through her I too
can build a family.”
And it came to pass, when
Rachel had born Joseph, that Jacob said unto
Laban, Send me away, that I may go unto mine own place, and to my country.
Now after
Rachel had given birth to Joseph, Jacob said to
Laban, “Send me on my way so I
can return to my homeland.
And he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me any thing: if thou
wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock:
“What
can I give you?”
Laban asked. “You do not need to give me anything,” Jacob replied. “If you do this one thing for me, I will keep on
shepherding and keeping your flocks.
And said unto them, I see your father’s countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father hath been with me.
and he told them, “I can see from your father’s countenance that his attitude toward me has changed; but the God of my father has been with me.
And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had
gotten, the cattle of his getting, which he had
gotten in Padan-
aram, for to go to Isaac his father in the land of
Canaan.
and he drove all his
livestock before him, along with all the possessions he had acquired in Paddan-
aram, to go to his father Isaac in the land in
Canaan.
And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched, but found not the images.
Rachel said to her father, “Sir, do not be
angry that I
cannot stand up before you; for I am having my period.” So
Laban searched, but could not find the household idols.
And
Laban answered and said unto Jacob, These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that thou seest is mine: and what
can I do this day unto these my daughters, or unto their children which they have born?
But
Laban answered Jacob, “These daughters are my daughters, these sons are my sons, and these flocks are my flocks! Everything you see is mine! Yet what
can I do
today about these daughters of mine or the children they have borne?
And said, If
Esau come to the one company, and
smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.
He thought, “If
Esau comes and attacks one camp, then the other camp
can escape.”
And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
But You have said, ‘I will surely make you
prosper, and I will make your offspring like the sand of the sea, too numerous to count.’”
And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will
appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face;
peradventure he will accept of me.
You are also to say, ‘Look, your servant Jacob is right behind us.’” For he thought, “I will
appease Esau with the gift that is going before me. After that I
can face him, and perhaps he will accept me.”
And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of
Shechem, which is in the land of
Canaan, when he came from Padan-
aram; and pitched his tent before the city.
After Jacob had come from Paddan-
aram, he arrived safely at the city of
Shechem in the land of
Canaan, and he camped just outside the city.
And they said unto them, We
cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is
uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us:
“We
cannot do such a thing,” they said. “To give our sister to an
uncircumcised man would be a disgrace to us.
And Jacob said to
Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to
stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the
Canaanites and the
Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and
slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.
Then Jacob said to
Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble upon me by making me a
stench to the
Canaanites and
Perizzites, the people of this land. We are few in number; if they unite against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed.”
So Jacob came to
Luz, which is in the land of
Canaan, that is,
Bethel, he and all the people that were with him.
Esau took his wives of the daughters of
Canaan; Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite;
Esau took his wives from the daughters of
Canaan: Adah daughter of Elon the Hittite, Oholibamah daughter of Anah and
granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite,
And Aholibamah bare Jeush, and Jaalam, and
Korah: these are the sons of
Esau, which were born unto him in the land of
Canaan.
and Oholibamah gave birth to Jeush, Jalam, and
Korah. These were the sons of
Esau, who were born to him in the land of
Canaan.
And
Esau took his wives, and his sons, and his daughters, and all the persons of his house, and his cattle, and all his beasts, and all his substance, which he had got in the land of
Canaan; and went into the country from the face of his brother Jacob.
Later,
Esau took his wives and sons and daughters and all the people of his household, along with his
livestock, all his other animals, and all the property he had acquired in
Canaan, and he moved to a land far away from his brother Jacob.
And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of
Canaan.
Now Jacob lived in the land where his father had resided, the land of
Canaan.
And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks.
“I am looking for my brothers,” Joseph replied. “Can you please tell me where they are pasturing their flocks?”
Come now therefore, and let us
slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath
devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.
“Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. We
can say that a
vicious animal has
devoured him. Then we shall see what becomes of his dreams!”
And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain
Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.
There Judah saw the daughter of a
Canaanite man named Shua, and he took her as a wife and
slept with her.
And he returned to Judah, and said, I
cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no
harlot in this place.
So Hirah returned to Judah and said, “I could not find her, and
furthermore, the men of that place said, ‘No
shrine prostitute has been here.’”
There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
No one in this house is greater than I am. He has
withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do such a great evil and sin against God?”
And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that
can interpret it: and I have heard say of thee, that thou
canst understand a dream to
interpret it.
Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream, and no one
can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you
can interpret it.”
And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.
“I myself cannot do it,” Joseph replied, “but God will give Pharaoh a sound answer.”
And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?
So Pharaoh asked them, “
Can we find
anyone like this man, in whom the Spirit of God abides?”
And the sons of Israel came to
buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of
Canaan.
So the sons of Israel were among those who came to
buy grain, since the famine had also spread to the land of
Canaan.
And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of
Canaan to
buy food.
And when Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he treated them as strangers and spoke harshly to them. “Where have you come from?” he asked. “From the land of
Canaan,” they replied. “We are here to
buy food.”
And they said, Thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of
Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.
But they answered, “Your servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of
Canaan. The youngest is now with our father, and one is no more.”
But bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be
verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so.
Then bring your youngest brother to me so that your words
can be
verified, that you may not die.” And to this they consented.
And they came unto Jacob their father unto the land of
Canaan, and told him all that
befell unto them; saying,
When they reached their father Jacob in the land of
Canaan, they described to him all that had happened to them:
We be twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of
Canaan.
We are twelve brothers, sons of one father. One is no more, and the youngest is now with our father in the land of
Canaan.’
And bring your youngest brother unto me: then shall I know that ye are no
spies, but that ye are true men: so will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall
traffick in the land.
But bring your youngest brother back to me so I will know that you are not
spies but
honest men. Then I will give your brother back to you, and you
can trade in the land.’”
And other money have we brought down in our hands to
buy food: we
cannot tell who put our money in our sacks.
We have brought additional silver with us to
buy food. We do not know who put our silver in our sacks.”
And he commanded the
steward of his house, saying, Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they
can carry, and put every man’s money in his
sack’s mouth.
Then Joseph
instructed his
steward: “Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they
can carry, and put each one’s silver in the mouth of his
sack.
Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks’ mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of
Canaan: how then should we
steal out of thy lord’s house silver or gold?
We even brought back to you from the land of
Canaan the silver we found in the mouths of our sacks. Why would we
steal silver or gold from your master’s house?
And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done?
wot ye not that such a man as I
can certainly divine?
“What is this deed you have done?” Joseph declared. “Do you not know that a man like me can surely divine the truth?”
And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord’s servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.
“What
can we say to my lord?” Judah replied. “How
can we
plead? How
can we
justify ourselves? God has exposed the iniquity of your servants. We are now my lord’s slaves—both we and the one who was found with the cup.”
And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.
Then you told your servants, ‘Bring him down to me so that I can see him for myself.’
And we said unto my lord, The
lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.
So we said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father. If he were to leave, his father would die.’
And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man’s face, except our youngest brother be with us.
But we answered, ‘We cannot go down there unless our younger brother goes with us. So if our younger brother is not with us, we cannot see the man.’
For how shall I go up to my father, and the
lad be not with me? lest
peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.
For how
can I go back to my father without the boy? I could not bear to see the misery that would
overwhelm him.”
And, behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that it is my mouth that speaketh unto you.
Behold! You and my brother Benjamin can see that I, Joseph, am the one speaking with you.
And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Say unto thy brethren, This do ye;
lade your beasts, and go, get you unto the land of
Canaan;
Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Tell your brothers, ‘Do as follows: Load your animals and return to the land of
Canaan.
And they went up out of Egypt, and came into the land of
Canaan unto Jacob their father,
So the brothers went up out of Egypt and came to their father Jacob in the land of
Canaan.
And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had
gotten in the land of
Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, and all his seed with him:
They also took the
livestock and possessions they had acquired in the land of
Canaan, and Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt.
And the sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Pharez, and Zarah: but Er and Onan died in the land of
Canaan. And the sons of Pharez were Hezron and Hamul.
The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah,
Perez, and Zerah; but Er and Onan died in the land of
Canaan. The sons of
Perez: Hezron and Hamul.
And Israel said unto Joseph, Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou art yet alive.
Then Israel said to Joseph, “Finally I can die, now that I have seen your face and know that you are still alive!”
And Joseph said unto his brethren, and unto his father’s house, I will go up, and
shew Pharaoh, and say unto him, My brethren, and my father’s house, which were in the land of
Canaan, are come unto me;
Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and inform Pharaoh: ‘My brothers and my father’s household from the land of
Canaan have come to me.
