Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
Thus the heavens and the earth were
completed in all their vast
array.
The name of the first is Pison: that is it which
compasseth the whole land of
Havilah, where there is gold;
The name of the first river is Pishon; it winds through the whole land of
Havilah, where there is gold.
And the name of the second river is
Gihon: the same is it that
compasseth the whole land of
Ethiopia.
The name of the second river is
Gihon; it winds through the whole land of
Cush.
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
And the LORD God commanded him, “You may eat freely from every tree of the garden,
And he said, Who told thee that thou
wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree,
whereof I
commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
“Who told you that you were naked?” asked the LORD God. “Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast
hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I
commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it:
cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
And to Adam He said: “Because you have
listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten from the tree of which I
commanded you not to eat,
cursed is the ground because of you; through
toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.
Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be
hid; and I shall be a
fugitive and a
vagabond in the earth; and it shall
come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall
slay me.
Behold, this day You have driven me from the face of the earth, and from Your face I will be hidden; I will be a
fugitive and a
wanderer on the earth, and
whoever finds me will kill me.”
And he called his name
Noah, saying, This same shall
comfort us concerning our work and
toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath
cursed.
And he named him
Noah, saying, “May this one
comfort us in the labor and
toil of our hands caused by the ground that the LORD has
cursed.”
And God said unto
Noah, The end of all flesh is
come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
Then God said to
Noah, “The end of all living creatures has
come before Me, because through them the earth is full of violence. Now behold, I will destroy both them and the earth.
But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons’ wives with thee.
But I will establish My covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you.
Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every
creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall
come unto thee, to keep them alive.
Two of every kind of bird and animal and
crawling creature will
come to you to be kept alive.
Thus did
Noah; according to all that God
commanded him, so did he.
So
Noah did everything precisely as God had
commanded him.
And the LORD said unto
Noah,
Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.
Then the LORD said to
Noah, “Go into the ark, you and all your family, because I have found you righteous in this generation.
And
Noah did according unto all that the LORD
commanded him.
And
Noah did all that the LORD had
commanded him.
There went in two and two unto
Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had
commanded Noah.
came to
Noah to enter the ark, two by two, male and female, as God had
commanded Noah.
And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.
And they entered, the male and female of every living thing, as God had
commanded Noah. Then the LORD shut him in.
And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.
For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth, and the waters rose and lifted the ark high above the earth.
And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered.
Finally, the waters
completely inundated the earth, so that all the high mountains under all the heavens were covered.
Go forth of the ark, thou, and thy wife, and thy sons, and thy sons’ wives with thee.
“Come out of the ark, you and your wife, along with your sons and their wives.
And God said, This is the
token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:
And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between Me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come:
And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:
Whenever I form clouds over the earth and the
rainbow appears in the clouds,
And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.
Now the whole world had one language and a common form of speech.
And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and
slime had they for
morter.
And they said to one another, “
Come, let us make bricks and
bake them thoroughly.” So they used brick instead of stone, and tar instead of mortar.
And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
“Come,” they said, “let us build for ourselves a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens, that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of all the earth.”
Go to, let us go down, and there
confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.
Come, let Us go down and
confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”
And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon:
As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, “Look, I know that you are a beautiful woman,
Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive.
and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live.
And it came to pass, that, when
Abram was
come into Egypt, the Egyptians
beheld the woman that she was very fair.
So when
Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful.
The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and
commended her before Pharaoh: and the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house.
When Pharaoh’s officials saw Sarai, they
commended her to him, and she was taken into the palace of Pharaoh.
And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him: and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had.
Then Pharaoh gave his men orders concerning
Abram, and they sent him away with his wife and all his possessions.
And Lot lifted up his eyes, and
beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed
Sodom and
Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou
comest unto Zoar.
And Lot looked out and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan, all the way to Zoar, was well watered like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the LORD destroyed
Sodom and
Gomorrah.)
Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.
So Lot chose the whole plain of the Jordan for himself and set out toward the east. And
Abram and Lot parted
company.
And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall
come forth out of thine own
bowels shall be thine heir.
Then the word of the LORD came to
Abram, saying, “This one will not be your heir, but one who
comes from your own body will be your heir.”
And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
But I will judge the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will depart with many possessions.
But in the fourth generation they shall
come hither again: for the iniquity of the
Amorites is not yet full.
In the fourth generation your descendants will return here, for the iniquity of the
Amorites is not yet
complete.”
“
Hagar, servant of Sarai,” he said, “where have you
come from, and where are you going?” “I am running away from my
mistress Sarai,” she replied.
And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.
I will make you exceedingly fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will descend from you.
And I will
fetch a
morsel of bread, and
comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye
come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said.
And I will bring a
bit of bread so that you may refresh
yourselves. This is why you have passed your servant’s way. After that, you may continue on your way.” “
Yes,” they replied, “you may do as you have said.”
For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
For I have chosen him, so that he will command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, in order that the LORD may bring upon Abraham what He has promised.”
I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.
I will go down to see if their actions fully
justify the outcry that has reached Me. If not, I will find out.”
And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.
When the LORD had finished speaking with Abraham, He departed, and Abraham returned home.
But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of
Sodom,
compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:
Before they had gone to bed, all the men of the city of
Sodom, both young and old, surrounded the house.
Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.
Look, I have two daughters who have never
slept with a man. Let me bring them to you, and you can do to them as you please. But do not do anything to these men, for they have
come under the protection of my roof.”
And while he
lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being
merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.
But when Lot
hesitated, the men
grabbed his hand and the hands of his wife and his two daughters. And they led them safely out of the city, because of the LORD’s
compassion for them.
Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou be
come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.
Hurry! Run there quickly, for I cannot do anything until you reach it.” That is why the town was called Zoar.
And the
firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to
come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:
One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man in the land to sleep with us, as is the custom over all the earth.
Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
Come, let us get our father
drunk with wine so we can sleep with him and preserve his line.”
But
Abimelech had not
come near her: and he said, Lord,
wilt thou
slay also a righteous nation?
Now
Abimelech had not gone near her, so he replied, “Lord, would You destroy a nation even though it is innocent?
And it came to pass, when God caused me to
wander from my father’s house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt
shew unto me; at every place
whither we shall
come, say of me, He is my brother.
So when God had me journey from my father’s house, I said to
Sarah, ‘This is how you can show your
loyalty to me: Wherever we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”’”
And unto
Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved.
And he said to
Sarah, “See, I am giving your brother a thousand pieces of silver. It is your
vindication before all who are with you; you are
completely cleared.”
For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of
Abimelech, because of
Sarah Abraham’s wife.
for on account of Abraham’s wife
Sarah, the LORD had
completely closed all the wombs in
Abimelech’s household.
And Abraham
circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had
commanded him.
When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham
circumcised him, as God had
commanded him.
And it came to pass at that time, that
Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his host spake unto Abraham, saying, God is with thee in all that thou doest:
At that time
Abimelech and Phicol the
commander of his army said to Abraham, “God is with you in all that you do.
And Abraham reproved
Abimelech because of a well of water, which
Abimelech’s servants had violently taken away.
Thus they made a covenant at Beer-
sheba: then
Abimelech rose up, and Phichol the chief captain of his host, and they returned into the land of the Philistines.
After they had made the covenant at
Beersheba,
Abimelech and Phicol the
commander of his army got up and returned to the land of the Philistines.
And Abraham said unto his young men,
Abide ye here with the
ass; and I and the
lad will go
yonder and worship, and
come again to you,
“Stay here with the
donkey,” Abraham told his servants. “The boy and I will go over there to worship, and then we will return to you.”
And he
communed with them, saying, If it be your mind that I should
bury my dead out of my sight; hear me, and intreat for me to Ephron the son of
Zohar,
“If you are willing for me to
bury my dead,” he said to them, “
listen to me, and approach Ephron son of
Zohar on my behalf
And Ephron dwelt among the children of
Heth: and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the
audience of the children of
Heth, even of all that went in at the gate of his city, saying,
Now Ephron was sitting among the sons of
Heth. So in the presence of all the
Hittites who had
come to the gate of his city, Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham,
Unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of
Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city.
to Abraham’s possession in the presence of all the
Hittites who had
come to the gate of his city.
Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water:
Here I am, standing beside the spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water.
And let it
come to pass, that the
damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.
Now may it happen that the
girl to whom I say, ‘Please let down your
jar that I may drink,’ and who responds, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels as well’—let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. By this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.”
And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; wherefore standest thou without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.
“
Come, you who are blessed by the LORD,” said
Laban. “Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.”
And the man came into the house: and he
ungirded his camels, and gave straw and
provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men’s feet that were with him.
So the man came to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and feed were brought to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of his companions.
And I said unto my master,
Peradventure the woman will not follow me.
Then I asked my master, ‘What if the woman will not come back with me?’
Then shalt thou be clear from this my oath, when thou comest to my kindred; and if they give not thee one, thou shalt be clear from my oath.
And when you go to my kindred, if they refuse to give her to you, then you will be released from my oath.’
Behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass, that when the virgin cometh forth to draw water, and I say to her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink;
Here I am, standing beside this spring. Now if a
maiden comes out to draw water and I say to her, ‘Please let me drink a little water from your
jar,’
And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold,
Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the well, and drew water: and I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee.
And before I had finished praying in my heart, there was
Rebekah coming out with her
jar on her shoulder, and she went down to the spring and drew water. So I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’
And Isaac went out to
meditate in the field at the
eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were
coming.
Early in the evening, Isaac went out to the field to
meditate, and looking up, he saw the camels approaching.
For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a
vail, and covered herself.
and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field
coming to meet us?” “It is my master,” the servant answered. So she took her
veil and covered herself.
And Isaac brought her into his mother
Sarah’s tent, and took
Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was
comforted after his mother’s death.
And Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother
Sarah and took
Rebekah as his wife. And Isaac loved her and was
comforted after his mother’s death.
Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.
because Abraham
listened to My voice and kept My charge, My
commandments, My statutes, and My laws.”
Then
Abimelech went to him from
Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army.
Later,
Abimelech came to Isaac from
Gerar, with Ahuzzath his
adviser and Phicol the
commander of his army.
And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore
come ye to me, seeing ye
hate me, and have sent me away from you?
“Why have you
come to me?” Isaac asked them. “You
hated me and sent me away.”
Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command thee.
Now, my son,
listen to my voice and do exactly as I tell you.
And Isaac said unto Jacob,
Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son
Esau or not.
Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please
come closer so I can touch you, my son. Are you really my son
Esau, or not?”
And his father Isaac said unto him,
Come near now, and
kiss me, my son.
Then his father Isaac said to him, “Please
come near and
kiss me, my son.”
And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.
You shall live by the sword and serve your brother. But when you
rebel, you will
tear his yoke from your neck.”
And these words of
Esau her elder son were told to
Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him, Behold, thy brother
Esau, as touching thee,
doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee.
When the words of her older son
Esau were relayed to
Rebekah, she sent for her younger son Jacob and told him, “Look, your brother
Esau is
consoling himself by
plotting to kill you.
And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of
Canaan.
So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him. “Do not take a wife from the
Canaanite women,” he
commanded.
And God
Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people;
May God
Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, so that you may become a
company of peoples.
When
Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padan-
aram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of
Canaan;
Now
Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him to Paddan-
aram to take a wife there,
commanding him, “Do not marry a
Canaanite woman,”
So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God:
so that I may return safely to my father’s house, then the LORD will be my God.
And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and, behold,
Rachel his daughter
cometh with the sheep.
“Is he well?” Jacob inquired. “
Yes,” they answered, “and here
comes his daughter
Rachel with his sheep.”
And Jacob said unto
Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her.
Finally Jacob said to
Laban, “Grant me my wife, for my time is
complete, and I want to sleep with her.”
And Leah said, A
troop cometh: and she called his name
Gad.
Then Leah said, “How fortunate!” So she named him
Gad.
And Jacob came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, Thou must
come in unto me; for surely I have
hired thee with my son’s mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.
When Jacob came in from the field that evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must
come with me, for I have
hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he
slept with her that night.
For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased unto a multitude; and the LORD hath blessed thee since my coming: and now when shall I provide for mine own house also?
Indeed, you had very little before my arrival, but now your wealth has increased many times over. The LORD has blessed you wherever I set foot. But now, when may I also provide for my own household?”
So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to
come, when it shall
come for my
hire before thy face: every one that is not
speckled and
spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be counted
stolen with me.
So my
honesty will
testify for me when you
come to check on my wages in the future. If I have any goats that are not
speckled or
spotted, or any lambs that are not dark-colored, they will be considered
stolen.”
And he set the rods which he had
pilled before the flocks in the gutters in the watering troughs when the flocks came to drink, that they should conceive when they came to drink.
Then he set the
peeled branches in the watering troughs in front of the flocks
coming in to drink. So when the flocks were in heat and came to drink,
Now therefore come thou, let us make a covenant, I and thou; and let it be for a witness between me and thee.
Come now, let us make a covenant, you and I, and let it serve as a witness between you and me.”
And he
commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord
Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have
sojourned with
Laban, and stayed there until now:
He
instructed them, “You are to say to my master
Esau, ‘Your servant Jacob says: I have been staying with
Laban and have remained there until now.
And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother
Esau, and also he
cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother
Esau, and now he is
coming to meet you—he and four hundred men with him.”
And said, If
Esau come to the one
company, and
smite it, then the other
company which is left shall escape.
He thought, “If
Esau comes and attacks one camp, then the other camp can escape.”
Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of
Esau: for I fear him, lest he will
come and
smite me, and the mother with the children.
Please deliver me from the hand of my brother
Esau, for I am afraid that he may
come and attack me and the mothers and children with me.
And he
commanded the foremost, saying, When
Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and
whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
He
instructed the one in the lead, “When my brother
Esau meets you and asks, ‘To whom do you belong, where are you going, and whose animals are these before you?’
And so
commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto
Esau, when ye find him.
He also
instructed the second, the third, and all those following behind the herds: “When you meet
Esau, you are to say the same thing to him.
So went the present over before him: and himself
lodged that night in the
company.
So Jacob’s gifts went on before him, while he spent the night in the camp.
And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold,
Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto
Rachel, and unto the two handmaids.
Now Jacob looked up and saw
Esau coming toward him with four hundred men. So he divided the children among Leah,
Rachel, and the two maidservants.
And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.
“What do you mean by sending this whole
company to meet me?” asked
Esau. “To find favor in your sight, my lord,” Jacob answered.
