And the priest shall come again the seventh day, and shall look: and, behold, if the plague be spread in the walls of the house;
On the seventh day the priest is to return and
inspect the house. If the
mildew has spread on the walls,
And if the plague
come again, and break out in the house, after that he hath taken away the stones, and after he hath
scraped the house, and after it is plaistered;
If the
mildew reappears in the house after the stones have been
torn out and the house has been
scraped and replastered,
Then the priest shall
come and look, and, behold, if the plague be spread in the house, it is a
fretting leprosy in the house: it is unclean.
the priest must
come and
inspect it. If the
mildew has spread in the house, it is a destructive
mildew; the house is unclean.
And if the priest shall
come in, and look upon it, and, behold, the plague hath not spread in the house, after the house was plaistered: then the priest shall
pronounce the house clean, because the plague is
healed.
If, however, the priest
comes and inspects it, and the
mildew has not spread after the house has been replastered, he shall
pronounce the house clean, because the
mildew is gone.
And on the eighth day he shall take to him two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, and come before the LORD unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and give them unto the priest:
On the eighth day he is to take two turtledoves or two young pigeons, come before the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, and give them to the priest.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he
come not at all times into the holy place within the
vail before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.
And the LORD said to Moses: “Tell your brother Aaron not to enter freely into the Most Holy Place behind the
veil in front of the mercy seat on the ark, or else he will die, because I appear in the cloud above the mercy seat.
Thus shall Aaron
come into the holy place: with a young
bullock for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering.
This is how Aaron is to enter the Holy Place: with a young bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.
And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an
atonement in the holy place, until he
come out, and have made an
atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel.
No one may be in the Tent of Meeting from the time Aaron goes in to make
atonement in the Most Holy Place until he leaves, after he has made
atonement for himself, his household, and the whole assembly of Israel.
And Aaron shall come into the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall put off the linen garments, which he put on when he went into the holy place, and shall leave them there:
Then Aaron is to enter the Tent of Meeting, take off the linen garments he put on before entering the Most Holy Place, and leave them there.
And he shall wash his flesh with water in the holy place, and put on his garments, and
come forth, and offer his burnt offering, and the burnt offering of the people, and make an
atonement for himself, and for the people.
He is to
bathe himself with water in a holy place and put on his own clothes. Then he must go out and sacrifice his burnt offering and the people’s burnt offering to make
atonement for himself and for the people.
And he that let go the goat for the
scapegoat shall wash his clothes, and
bathe his flesh in water, and afterward
come into the camp.
The man who released the goat as the
scapegoat must wash his clothes and
bathe himself with water; afterward he may reenter the camp.
And he that burneth them shall wash his clothes, and
bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall
come into the camp.
The one who burns them must wash his clothes and
bathe himself with water, and afterward he may reenter the camp.
And they shall no more offer their sacrifices unto devils, after whom they have gone a
whoring. This shall be a statute for ever unto them throughout their generations.
They must no longer offer their sacrifices to the goat demons to which they have
prostituted themselves. This will be a permanent statute for them for the generations to
come.’
Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle
gender with a
diverse kind: thou shalt not
sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen
come upon thee.
You are to keep My statutes. You shall not
crossbreed two different kinds of
livestock; you shall not
sow your fields with two kinds of seed; and you shall not wear clothing made of two kinds of material.
And when ye shall
come into the land, and shall have planted all manner of trees for food, then ye shall count the fruit thereof as
uncircumcised: three years shall it be as
uncircumcised unto you: it shall not be eaten of.
When you enter the land and plant any kind of tree for food, you shall regard the fruit as forbidden. For three years it will be forbidden to you and must not be eaten.
Speak unto Aaron, saying,
Whosoever he be of thy seed in their generations that hath any
blemish, let him not approach to offer the bread of his God.
“Say to Aaron, ‘For the generations to come, none of your descendants who has a physical defect may approach to offer the food of his God.
No man that hath a
blemish of the seed of Aaron the priest shall
come nigh to offer the offerings of the LORD made by fire: he hath a
blemish; he shall not
come nigh to offer the bread of his God.
No
descendant of Aaron the priest who has a defect shall approach to present the offerings made by fire to the LORD. Since he has a defect, he is not to
come near to offer the food of his God.
but because he has a defect, he must not go near the
veil or approach the altar, so as not to
desecrate My
sanctuaries. For I am the LORD who sanctifies them.’”
Say unto them,
Whosoever he be of all your seed among your generations, that goeth unto the holy things, which the children of Israel
hallow unto the LORD, having his uncleanness upon him, that soul shall be cut off from my presence: I am the LORD.
Tell them that for the generations to
come, if any of their descendants in a state of uncleanness approaches the sacred offerings that the Israelites
consecrate to the LORD, that person must be cut off from My presence. I am the LORD.
Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be
come into the land which I give unto you, and shall
reap the harvest thereof, then ye shall bring a
sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest unto the priest:
“Speak to the Israelites and say, ‘When you enter the land that I am giving you and you
reap its harvest, you are to bring to the priest a
sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest.
And ye shall eat neither bread, nor
parched corn, nor green ears, until the
selfsame day that ye have brought an offering unto your God: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
You must not eat any bread or
roasted or new grain until the very day you have brought this offering to your God. This is to be a permanent statute for the generations to
come, wherever you live.
And ye shall
proclaim on the
selfsame day, that it may be an holy
convocation unto you: ye shall do no
servile work therein: it shall be a statute for ever in all your dwellings throughout your generations.
On that same day you are to
proclaim a sacred assembly, and you must not do any regular work. This is to be a permanent statute wherever you live for the generations to
come.
Ye shall do no manner of work: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
You are not to do any work at all. This is a permanent statute for the generations to come, wherever you live.
And ye shall keep it a feast unto the LORD seven days in the year. It shall be a statute for ever in your generations: ye shall
celebrate it in the seventh month.
You are to
celebrate this as a feast to the LORD for seven days each year. This is a permanent statute for the generations to
come; you are to
celebrate it in the seventh month.
Without the
vail of the testimony, in the tabernacle of the congregation, shall Aaron order it from the evening unto the morning before the LORD continually: it shall be a statute for ever in your generations.
Outside the
veil of the Testimony in the Tent of Meeting, Aaron is to tend the lamps continually before the LORD from evening until morning. This is to be a permanent statute for the generations to
come.
Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto the LORD.
“Speak to the Israelites and say to them: When you enter the land that I am giving you, the land itself must observe a Sabbath to the LORD.
And ye shall
sow the eighth year, and eat yet of old fruit until the ninth year; until her fruits
come in ye shall eat of the old store.
While you are
sowing in the eighth year, you will be eating from the previous harvest, until the ninth year’s harvest
comes in.
If thy brother be
waxen poor, and hath sold away some of his possession, and if any of his
kin come to
redeem it, then shall he
redeem that which his brother sold.
If your brother becomes
impoverished and sells some of his property, his nearest of
kin may
come and
redeem what his brother has sold.
Both thy
bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye
buy bondmen and bondmaids.
Your menservants and maidservants shall come from the nations around you, from whom you may purchase them.
And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of
Sinai, in the tabernacle of the congregation, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were
come out of the land of Egypt, saying,
On the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites had
come out of the land of Egypt, the LORD spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting in the Wilderness of
Sinai. He said:
And when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down: and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up: and the stranger that
cometh nigh shall be put to death.
Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever it is to be pitched, the Levites are to set it up. Any outsider who goes near it must be put to death.
And thou shalt
appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall wait on their priest’s office: and the stranger that
cometh nigh shall be put to death.
So you shall
appoint Aaron and his sons to carry out the duties of the priesthood; but any outsider who approaches the tabernacle must be put to death.”
But those that
encamp before the tabernacle toward the east, even before the tabernacle of the congregation eastward, shall be Moses, and Aaron and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel; and the stranger that
cometh nigh shall be put to death.
Moses, Aaron, and Aaron’s sons were to camp to the east of the tabernacle, toward the
sunrise, before the Tent of Meeting. They were to perform the duties of the sanctuary as a service on behalf of the Israelites; but any outsider who approached the sanctuary was to be put to death.
And when the camp setteth forward, Aaron shall
come, and his sons, and they shall take down the covering
vail, and cover the ark of testimony with it:
Whenever the camp sets out, Aaron and his sons are to go in, take down the
veil of the
curtain, and cover the ark of the Testimony with it.
And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of
Kohath shall
come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of
Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation.
When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy objects and all their
equipment, as soon as the camp is ready to move, the Kohathites shall
come and do the carrying. But they must not touch the holy objects, or they will die. These are the
transportation duties of the Kohathites regarding the Tent of Meeting.
But thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and
appoint them every one to his service and to his burden:
In order that they may live and not die when they
come near the most holy things, do this for them: Aaron and his sons are to go in and
assign each man his task and what he is to carry.
From thirty years old and upward until fifty years old shalt thou number them; all that enter in to perform the service, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation.
from thirty to fifty years old, counting
everyone who
comes to serve in the work at the Tent of Meeting.
From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old shalt thou number them, every one that entereth into the service, to do the work of the tabernacle of the congregation.
from thirty to fifty years old, counting
everyone who
comes to serve in the work of the Tent of Meeting.
And the spirit of jealousy
come upon him, and he be
jealous of his wife, and she be
defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy
come upon him, and he be
jealous of his wife, and she be not
defiled:
and if a feeling of jealousy
comes over her husband and he suspects his wife who has
defiled herself—or if a feeling of jealousy
comes over him and he suspects her even though she has not
defiled herself—
And when he hath made her to drink the water, then it shall
come to pass, that, if she be
defiled, and have done
trespass against her husband, that the water that causeth the
curse shall enter into her, and become bitter, and her
belly shall swell, and her
thigh shall
rot: and the woman shall be a
curse among her people.
When he has made her drink the water, if she has
defiled herself and been unfaithful to her husband, then the water that brings a
curse will enter her and cause bitter suffering; her
belly will swell, her
thigh will
shrivel, and she will become
accursed among her people.
Or when the spirit of jealousy
cometh upon him, and he be
jealous over his wife, and shall set the woman before the LORD, and the priest shall
execute upon her all this law.
or when a feeling of jealousy comes over a husband and he suspects his wife. He is to have the woman stand before the LORD, and the priest is to apply to her this entire law.
All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the vine tree, from the kernels even to the
husk.
All the days of his separation, he is not to eat anything that
comes from the
grapevine, not even the seeds or skins.
All the days of the
vow of his separation there shall no
razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the LORD, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow.
For the entire period of his
vow of separation, no
razor shall pass over his head. He must be holy until the time of his separation to the LORD is complete; he must let the hair of his head grow long.
All the days that he separateth himself unto the LORD he shall come at no dead body.
Throughout the days of his separation to the LORD, he must not go near a dead body.
And after that shall the Levites go in to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation: and thou shalt
cleanse them, and offer them for an offering.
After you have
cleansed them and presented them as a wave offering, they may
come to serve at the Tent of Meeting.
For they are wholly given unto me from among the children of Israel; instead of such as open every
womb, even instead of the
firstborn of all the children of Israel, have I taken them unto me.
For the Levites have been wholly given to Me from among the sons of Israel. I have taken them for Myself in place of all who
come first from the
womb, the
firstborn of all the sons of Israel.
And I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the children of Israel, to do the service of the children of Israel in the tabernacle of the congregation, and to make an
atonement for the children of Israel: that there be no plague among the children of Israel, when the children of Israel
come nigh unto the sanctuary.
And I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and his sons from among the Israelites, to perform the service for the Israelites at the Tent of Meeting and to make
atonement on their behalf, so that no plague will
come against the Israelites when they approach the sanctuary.”
And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of
Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they were
come out of the land of Egypt, saying,
In the first month of the second year after Israel had
come out of the land of Egypt, the LORD spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of
Sinai:
And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow with the
trumpets; and they shall be to you for an
ordinance for ever throughout your generations.
The sons of Aaron, the priests, are to sound the
trumpets. This shall be a permanent statute for you and the generations to
come.
And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses’ father in law, We are journeying unto the place of which the LORD said, I will give it you: come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel.
Then Moses said to Hobab, the son of Moses’ father-in-law Reuel the Midianite, “We are setting out for the place of which the LORD said: ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us, and we will treat you well, for the LORD has promised good things to Israel.”
And it shall be, if thou go with us,
yea, it shall be, that what goodness the LORD shall do unto us, the same will we do unto thee.
If you come with us, we will share with you whatever good things the LORD gives us.”
And I will
come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not
thyself alone.
And I will
come down and speak with you there, and I will take some of the Spirit that is on you and put that Spirit on them. They will help you bear the burden of the people, so that you do not have to bear it by
yourself.
But even a whole month, until it
come out at your nostrils, and it be
loathsome unto you: because that ye have
despised the LORD which is among you, and have
wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?
but for a whole month—until it
comes out of your nostrils and makes you
nauseous—because you have rejected the LORD, who is among you, and have
cried out before Him, saying, ‘Why did we ever leave Egypt?’”
And the LORD said unto Moses, Is the LORD’S hand waxed short? thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not.
The LORD answered Moses, “Is the LORD’s arm too short? Now you will see whether or not My word will come to pass.”
And the LORD spake suddenly unto Moses, and unto Aaron, and unto
Miriam,
Come out ye three unto the tabernacle of the congregation. And they three came out.
And suddenly the LORD said to Moses, Aaron, and
Miriam, “You three,
come out to the Tent of Meeting.” So the three went out,
Let her not be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half consumed when he
cometh out of his mother’s
womb.
Please do not let her be like a
stillborn infant whose flesh is half consumed when he
comes out of his mother’s
womb.”
So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men
come to
Hamath.
So they went up and
spied out the land from the Wilderness of Zin as far as Rehob, toward Lebo-
hamath.
And there we saw the giants, the sons of
Anak, which
come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
We even saw the
Nephilim there—the descendants of
Anak that
come from the
Nephilim! We seemed like grasshoppers in our own sight, and we must have seemed the same to them!”
Doubtless ye shall not
come into the land, concerning which I
sware to make you dwell therein, save
Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of
Nun.
Surely none of you will enter the land in which I
swore to settle you, except
Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of
Nun.
Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come into the land of your habitations, which I give unto you,
“Speak to the Israelites and tell them: After you enter the land that I am giving you as a home
And if a stranger
sojourn with you, or
whosoever be among you in your generations, and will offer an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD; as ye do, so he shall do.
And for the generations to
come, if a foreigner residing with you or someone else among you wants to prepare an offering made by fire as a pleasing
aroma to the LORD, he is to do exactly as you do.
One
ordinance shall be both for you of the congregation, and also for the stranger that sojourneth with you, an
ordinance for ever in your generations: as ye are, so shall the stranger be before the LORD.
The assembly is to have the same statute both for you and for the foreign resident; it is a permanent statute for the generations to come. You and the foreigner shall be the same before the LORD.
Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye
come into the land
whither I bring you,
“Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When you enter the land to which I am bringing you
Even all that the LORD hath commanded you by the hand of Moses, from the day that the LORD commanded Moses, and
henceforward among your generations;
all that the LORD has commanded you through Moses from the day the LORD gave them and continuing through the generations to come—
Speak unto the children of Israel, and
bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the
fringe of the borders a
ribband of blue:
“Speak to the Israelites and tell them that throughout the generations to
come they are to make for themselves tassels for the corners of their garments, with a blue cord on each
tassel.
And he spake unto
Korah and unto all his company, saying, Even to
morrow the LORD will
shew who are his, and who is holy; and will cause him to
come near unto him: even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to
come near unto him.
Then he said to
Korah and all his followers, “
Tomorrow morning the LORD will
reveal who belongs to Him and who is holy, and He will bring that person near to Himself. The one He chooses, He will bring near to Himself.
And Moses sent to call Dathan and
Abiram, the sons of Eliab: which said, We will not
come up:
Then Moses summoned Dathan and
Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they said, “We will not
come!
Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land that floweth with milk and honey, or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards:
wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not
come up.
Moreover, you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you
gouge out the eyes of these men? No, we will not
come!”
So they
gat up from the tabernacle of
Korah, Dathan, and
Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and
Abiram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little children.
So they moved away from the dwellings of
Korah, Dathan, and
Abiram. Meanwhile, Dathan and
Abiram had
come out and stood at the entrances to their tents with their wives and children and infants.
To be a
memorial unto the children of Israel, that no stranger, which is not of the seed of Aaron,
come near to offer incense before the LORD; that he be not as
Korah, and as his company: as the LORD said to him by the hand of Moses.
just as the LORD commanded him through Moses. This was to be a reminder to the Israelites that no outsider who is not a
descendant of Aaron should approach to offer incense before the LORD, lest he become like
Korah and his followers.
And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a
censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and put on incense, and go quickly unto the congregation, and make an
atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from the LORD; the plague is begun.
Moses said to Aaron, “Take your
censer, place fire from the altar in it, and add incense. Go quickly to the congregation and make
atonement for them, because wrath has
come out from the LORD; the plague has begun.”
And it shall
come to pass, that the man’s rod, whom I shall choose, shall
blossom: and I will make to cease from me the murmurings of the children of Israel, whereby they
murmur against you.
The staff belonging to the man I choose will
sprout, and I will rid Myself of the constant
grumbling of the Israelites against you.”
Whosoever cometh any thing near unto the tabernacle of the LORD shall die: shall we be consumed with dying?
Anyone who
comes near the tabernacle of the LORD will die. Are we all going to perish?”
And they shall keep thy charge, and the charge of all the tabernacle: only they shall not
come nigh the vessels of the sanctuary and the altar, that neither they, nor ye also, die.
And they shall attend to your duties and to all the duties of the Tent; but they must not come near to the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar, or both they and you will die.
And they shall be joined unto thee, and keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, for all the service of the tabernacle: and a stranger shall not
come nigh unto you.
They are to join you and attend to the duties of the Tent of Meeting, doing all the work at the Tent; but no outsider may come near you.
Therefore thou and thy sons with thee shall keep your priest’s office for every thing of the altar, and within the
vail; and ye shall serve: I have given your priest’s office unto you as a service of gift: and the stranger that
cometh nigh shall be put to death.
But only you and your sons shall attend to your priesthood for everything concerning the altar and what is inside the
veil, and you are to perform that service. I am giving you the work of the priesthood as a gift, but any outsider who
comes near the sanctuary must be put to death.”
Neither must the children of Israel henceforth
come nigh the tabernacle of the congregation, lest they bear sin, and die.
No longer may the Israelites
come near to the Tent of Meeting, or they will
incur guilt and die.
But the Levites shall do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they shall bear their iniquity: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations, that among the children of Israel they have no inheritance.
The Levites are to perform the work of the Tent of Meeting, and they must bear their iniquity. This is a permanent statute for the generations to come. The Levites will not receive an inheritance among the Israelites.
Then the priest shall wash his clothes, and he shall
bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall
come into the camp, and the priest shall be unclean until the even.
Then the priest must wash his clothes and
bathe his body in water; after that he may enter the camp, but he will be
ceremonially unclean until evening.
This is the law, when a man dieth in a tent: all that come into the tent, and all that is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days.
This is the law when a person dies in a tent:
Everyone who enters the tent and
everyone already in the tent will be unclean for seven days,
And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.
Why have you led us up out of Egypt to bring us to this
wretched place? It is not a place of grain, figs, vines, or pomegranates—and there is no water to drink!”
And
Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I
come out against thee with the sword.
But
Edom answered, “You may not travel through our land, or we will
come out and
confront you with the sword.”
And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a
fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall
come to pass, that every one that is
bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Make a
fiery serpent and mount it on a pole. When
anyone who is
bitten looks at it, he will live.”
From thence they removed, and pitched on the other side of
Arnon, which is in the wilderness that
cometh out of the coasts of the
Amorites: for
Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the
Amorites.
From there they moved on and camped on the other side of the
Arnon, in the wilderness that extends into the Amorite territory. Now the
Arnon is the border between the Moabites and the
Amorites.
Wherefore they that speak in
proverbs say,
Come into
Heshbon, let the city of Sihon be built and prepared:
That is why the poets say: “
Come to
Heshbon, let it be rebuilt; let the city of Sihon be restored.
He sent messengers therefore unto
Balaam the son of Beor to
Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people
come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they
abide over against me:
he sent messengers to
Balaam son of Beor at
Pethor, which is by the Euphrates in the land of his people. “Behold, a people has
come out of Egypt,” said Balak. “They cover the face of the land and have settled next to me.
Come now therefore, I pray thee,
curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me:
peradventure I shall prevail, that we may
smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land: for I
wot that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is
cursed.
So please
come now and put a
curse on this people, because they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I may be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land; for I know that those you
bless are blessed, and those you
curse are
cursed.”
Behold, there is a people
come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth:
come now,
curse me them;
peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.
‘Behold, a people has
come out of Egypt, and they cover the face of the land. Now
come and put a
curse on them for me. Perhaps I may be able to fight against them and drive them away.’”
And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said,
Balaam refuseth to
come with us.
And the princes of Moab arose, returned to Balak, and said, “
Balaam refused to
come with us.”
For I will promote thee unto very great honour, and I will do
whatsoever thou sayest unto me:
come therefore, I pray thee,
curse me this people.
for I will honor you richly and do whatever you say. So please
come and put a
curse on this people for me!’”
And God came unto
Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men
come to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do.
That night God came to
Balaam and said, “Since these men have
come to
summon you, get up and go with them, but you must only do what I tell you.”
And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou
smitten thine
ass these three times? behold, I went out to
withstand thee, because thy way is
perverse before me:
The angel of the LORD asked him, “Why have you beaten your
donkey these three times? Behold, I have
come out to
oppose you, because your way is
perverse before me.
And when Balak heard that
Balaam was
come, he went out to meet him unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of
Arnon, which is in the utmost coast.
When Balak heard that
Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the
Moabite city on the
Arnon border, at the edge of his territory.
And Balak said unto
Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour?
And he said to
Balaam, “Did I not send you an
urgent summons? Why did you not
come to me? Am I really not able to richly reward you?”
And
Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am
come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.
“See, I have
come to you,”
Balaam replied, “but can I say just anything? I must speak only the word that God puts in my mouth.”
And
Balaam said unto Balak, Stand by thy burnt offering, and I will go:
peradventure the LORD will
come to meet me: and
whatsoever he sheweth me I will tell thee. And he went to an high place.
“Stay here by your burnt offering while I am gone,”
Balaam said to Balak. “Perhaps the LORD will meet with me. And whatever He reveals to me, I will tell you.” So
Balaam went off to a barren height,
And he took up his parable, and said, Balak the king of Moab hath brought me from
Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying,
Come,
curse me Jacob, and
come,
defy Israel.
And
Balaam lifted up an
oracle, saying: “Balak brought me from
Aram, the king of Moab from the mountains of the east. ‘
Come,’ he said, ‘put a
curse on Jacob for me;
come and
denounce Israel!’
And Balak said unto him,
Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, from whence thou mayest see them: thou shalt see but the utmost part of them, and shalt not see them all: and
curse me them from thence.
Then Balak said to him, “Please
come with me to another place where you can see them. You will only see the outskirts of their camp—not all of them. And from there,
curse them for me.”
And Balak said unto
Balaam,
Come, I pray thee, I will bring thee unto another place;
peradventure it will please God that thou mayest
curse me them from thence.
“Please
come,” said Balak, “I will take you to another place. Perhaps it will please God that you
curse them for me from there.”
And now, behold, I go unto my people:
come therefore, and I will
advertise thee what this people shall do to thy people in the latter days.
Now I am going back to my people, but
come, let me
warn you what this people will do to your people in the days to
come.”
