But it shall come to pass, if thou
wilt not
hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his
commandments and his statutes which I
command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:
If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God by carefully following all His
commandments and statutes I am giving you
today, all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:
Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed; because thou hearkenedst not unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee:
All these curses will come upon you. They will pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, since you did not obey the LORD your God and keep the commandments and statutes He gave you.
These are the words of the covenant, which the LORD
commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, beside the covenant which he made with them in
Horeb.
These are the words of the covenant that the LORD
commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant He had made with them at
Horeb.
And shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul;
and when you and your children return to the LORD your God and obey His voice with all your heart and all your soul according to everything I am giving you
today,
And thou shalt return and obey the voice of the LORD, and do all his commandments which I command thee this day.
And you will again obey the voice of the LORD and follow all His
commandments I am giving you
today.
If thou shalt
hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his
commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law, and if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.
if you obey the LORD your God by keeping His commandments and statutes that are written in this Book of the Law, and if you turn to Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off.
For this
commandment I give you
today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.
In that I
command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his
commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall
bless thee in the land
whither thou goest to possess it.
For I am
commanding you
today to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His
commandments, statutes, and ordinances, so that you may live and increase, and the LORD your God may
bless you in the land that you are entering to possess.
And the LORD shall give them up before your face, that ye may do unto them according unto all the commandments which I have commanded you.
The LORD will deliver them over to you, and you must do to them exactly as I have commanded you.
And Moses
commanded them, saying, At the end of every seven years, in the
solemnity of the year of release, in the feast of tabernacles,
Then Moses commanded them, “At the end of every seven years, at the appointed time in the year of remission of debt, during the Feast of Tabernacles,
That Moses commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying,
he gave this command to the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD:
For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt
yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have
commanded you; and evil will
befall you in the latter days; because ye will do evil in the sight of the LORD, to
provoke him to anger through the work of your hands.
For I know that after my death you will become utterly corrupt and turn from the path I have
commanded you. And in the days to come,
disaster will
befall you because you will do evil in the sight of the LORD to
provoke Him to anger by the work of your hands.”
And he said unto them, Set your hearts unto all the words which I
testify among you this day, which ye shall
command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law.
he said to them, “Take to heart all these words I
testify among you
today, so that you may
command your children to carefully follow all the words of this law.
Moses commanded us a law, even the inheritance of the congregation of Jacob.
the law that Moses gave us, the possession of the assembly of Jacob.
The eternal God is thy refuge, and
underneath are the
everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.
The eternal God is your dwelling place, and
underneath are the
everlasting arms. He drives out the enemy before you, giving the
command, ‘Destroy him!’
And Joshua the son of
Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel
hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD
commanded Moses.
Now Joshua son of
Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites obeyed him and did as the LORD had
commanded Moses.
Only be thou strong and very
courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant
commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest
prosper whithersoever thou goest.
Above all, be strong and very
courageous. Be careful to observe all the law that My servant Moses
commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may
prosper wherever you go.
Have not I
commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee
whithersoever thou goest.
Have I not
commanded you to be strong and
courageous? Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,
Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people:
Pass through the host, and
command the people, saying, Prepare you
victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God giveth you to possess it.
“Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘Prepare your provisions, for within three days you will cross the Jordan to go in and take possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess.’”
Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, The LORD your God hath given you rest, and hath given you this land.
“Remember what Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you when he said, ‘The LORD your God will give you rest, and He will give you this land.’
And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou
commandest us we will do, and
whithersoever thou sendest us, we will go.
So they answered Joshua, “Everything you have commanded us we will do, and everywhere you send us we will go.
Whosoever he be that
doth rebel against thy
commandment, and will not
hearken unto thy words in all that thou
commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of a good courage.
Anyone who rebels against your order and does not obey your words, all that you
command him, will be put to death. Above all, be strong and
courageous!”
And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.
and
commanded the people: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God being carried by the
Levitical priests, you are to set out from your positions and follow it.
And thou shalt
command the priests that bear the ark of the covenant, saying, When ye are come to the
brink of the water of Jordan, ye shall stand still in Jordan.
Command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant: ‘When you reach the edge of the waters, stand in the Jordan.’”
And
command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, and ye shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the
lodging place, where ye shall
lodge this night.
and
command them: ‘Take up for
yourselves twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan where the priests were standing, carry them with you, and set them down in the place where you
spend the night.’”
And the children of Israel did so as Joshua
commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they
lodged, and laid them down there.
Thus the Israelites did as Joshua had commanded them. They took up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, one for each tribe of Israel, just as the LORD had told Joshua; and they carried them to the camp, where they set them down.
For the priests which bare the ark stood in the midst of Jordan, until every thing was finished that the LORD commanded Joshua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua: and the people hasted and passed over.
Now the priests who carried the ark remained standing in the middle of the Jordan until the people had completed everything the LORD had
commanded Joshua to tell them, just as Moses had directed Joshua. The people
hurried across,
Command the priests that bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of Jordan.
“Command the priests who carry the ark of the Testimony to come up from the Jordan.”
Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, Come ye up out of Jordan.
So Joshua commanded the priests, “Come up from the Jordan.”
And he said,
Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant?
“Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as Commander of the LORD’s army.” Then Joshua fell facedown in reverence and asked Him, “What does my Lord have to say to His servant?”
And the captain of the LORD’S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy
shoe from off thy foot; for the place
whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.
The
Commander of the LORD’s army replied, “Take off your
sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.
And Joshua had
commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not
shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I
bid you
shout; then shall ye
shout.
But Joshua had
commanded the people: “Do not give a battle cry or let your voice be heard; do not let one word come out of your mouth until the day I tell you to
shout. Then you are to
shout!”
And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests
blew with the
trumpets, Joshua said unto the people,
Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city.
After the seventh time around, the priests
blew the horns, and Joshua
commanded the people, “
Shout! For the LORD has given you the city!
Israel hath
sinned, and they have also
transgressed my covenant which I
commanded them: for they have even taken of the
accursed thing, and have also
stolen, and
dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.
Israel has
sinned; they have
transgressed My covenant that I
commanded them, and they have taken some of what was devoted to destruction. Indeed, they have
stolen and
lied, and they have put these things with their own possessions.
And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:
with these orders: “Pay attention. You are to lie in
ambush behind the city, not too far from it. All of you must be ready.
And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the LORD shall ye do. See, I have commanded you.
And when you have taken the city, set it on fire. Do as the LORD has commanded! See, I have given you orders.”
Only the cattle and the
spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he
commanded Joshua.
Israel took for themselves only the cattle and
plunder of that city, as the LORD had
commanded Joshua.
And the king of
Ai he
hanged on a tree until
eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua
commanded that they should take his
carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise
thereon a great
heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.
He hung the king of
Ai on a tree until evening, and at
sunset Joshua
commanded that they take down the body from the tree and throw it down at the entrance of the city gate. And over it they raised a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day.
As Moses the servant of the LORD
commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered
thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.
just as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded the Israelites. He built it according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses: “an altar of uncut stones on which no iron tool has been used.” And on it they offered burnt offerings to the LORD, and they sacrificed peace offerings.
And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount
Gerizim, and half of them over against mount
Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had
commanded before, that they should
bless the people of Israel.
All Israel, foreigners and citizens alike, with their elders, officers, and judges, stood on both sides of the ark of the covenant of the LORD facing the
Levitical priests who carried it. Half of the people stood in front of Mount
Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount
Ebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD had
commanded earlier, to
bless the people of Israel.
There was not a word of all that Moses
commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were
conversant among them.
There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua failed to read before the whole assembly of Israel, including the women, the little ones, and the foreigners who lived among them.
And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God
commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were
sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
The Gibeonites answered, “Your servants were told clearly that the LORD your God had
commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land and
wipe out all its inhabitants before you. So we greatly feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we have done this.
And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
When they had brought the kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had accompanied him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So the commanders came forward and put their feet on their necks.
And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua
commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been
hid, and laid great stones in the cave’s mouth, which remain until this very day.
At
sunset Joshua ordered that they be taken down from the trees and thrown into the cave in which they had hidden. Then large stones were placed against the mouth of the cave, and the stones are there to this day.
So Joshua
smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the
vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel
commanded.
So Joshua conquered the whole region—the hill country, the Negev, the foothills, and the slopes, together with all their kings—leaving no survivors. He devoted to destruction everything that breathed, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.
And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and
smote them with the edge of the sword, and he utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the LORD
commanded.
Joshua captured all these kings and their cities and put them to the sword. He devoted them to destruction, as Moses the LORD’s servant had commanded.
As the LORD commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses.
As the LORD had commanded His servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua. That is what Joshua did, leaving nothing undone of all that the LORD had commanded Moses.
For it was of the LORD to
harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD
commanded Moses.
For it was of the LORD to
harden their hearts to
engage Israel in battle, so that they would be set apart for destruction and would receive no mercy, being
annihilated as the LORD had
commanded Moses.
All the inhabitants of the hill country from
Lebanon unto Misrephoth-
maim, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only divide thou it by lot unto the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have
commanded thee.
All the inhabitants of the hill country from
Lebanon to Misrephoth-
maim—all the Sidonians—I Myself will drive out before the Israelites. Be sure to divide it by lot as an inheritance to Israel, as I have
commanded you.
By lot was their inheritance, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes, and for the half tribe.
Their inheritance was assigned by lot for the nine and a half tribes, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.
As the LORD commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did, and they divided the land.
So the Israelites did as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they divided the land.
And unto
Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a part among the children of Judah, according to the
commandment of the LORD to Joshua, even the city of Arba the father of
Anak, which city is
Hebron.
According to the LORD’s
command to him, Joshua gave
Caleb son of Jephunneh a portion among the sons of Judah—Kiriath-arba, that is,
Hebron. (Arba was the
forefather of
Anak.)
And they came near before
Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of
Nun, and before the princes, saying, The LORD
commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brethren. Therefore according to the
commandment of the LORD he gave them an inheritance among the brethren of their father.
They approached
Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of
Nun, and the leaders, and said, “The LORD
commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers.” So Joshua gave them an inheritance among their father’s brothers, in keeping with the
command of the LORD.
And the men arose, and went away: and Joshua charged them that went to describe the land, saying, Go and walk through the land, and describe it, and come again to me, that I may here cast lots for you before the LORD in
Shiloh.
As the men got up to go out, Joshua
commanded them to map out the land, saying, “Go and survey the land, map it out, and return to me. Then I will cast lots for you here in
Shiloh in the presence of the LORD.”
According to the word of the LORD they gave him the city which he asked, even Timnath-serah in mount Ephraim: and he built the city, and dwelt therein.
as the LORD had commanded. They gave him the city of Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, as he requested. He rebuilt the city and settled in it.
And they spake unto them at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan, saying, The LORD
commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with the suburbs thereof for our cattle.
at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan and said to them, “The LORD
commanded through Moses that we be given cities in which to live, together with pasturelands for our
livestock.”
And the children of Israel gave unto the Levites out of their inheritance, at the commandment of the LORD, these cities and their suburbs.
So by the command of the LORD, the Israelites gave the Levites these cities and their pasturelands out of their own inheritance:
And the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities with their suburbs, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.
So the Israelites
allotted to the Levites these cities, together with their pasturelands, as the LORD had
commanded through Moses.
And said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you:
and told them, “You have done all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and you have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you.
Ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of the LORD your God.
All this time you have not deserted your brothers, up to this very day, but have kept the charge given you by the LORD your God.
But take
diligent heed to do the
commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his
commandments, and to
cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.
But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
And the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of
Shiloh, which is in the land of
Canaan, to go unto the country of
Gilead, to the land of their possession,
whereof they were possessed, according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.
So the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh left the Israelites at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan to return to their own land of
Gilead, which they had acquired according to the
command of the LORD through Moses.
When ye have
transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which he
commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed
yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be
kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.
If you
transgress the covenant of the LORD your God, which He
commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from this good land He has given you.”
And yet they would not
hearken unto their judges, but they went a
whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the
commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.
Israel, however, did not
listen to their judges. Instead, they
prostituted themselves with other gods and bowed down to them. They quickly turned from the way of their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the LORD’s
commandments; they did not do as their fathers had done.
And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath
transgressed my covenant which I
commanded their fathers, and have not
hearkened unto my voice;
So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He said, “Because this nation has
transgressed the covenant I laid down for their fathers and has not
heeded My voice,
And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would
hearken unto the
commandments of the LORD, which he
commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
These nations were left to test the Israelites, to find out whether they would keep the commandments of the LORD, which He had given their fathers through Moses.
And the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of
Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, which dwelt in
Harosheth of the Gentiles.
So the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of
Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The
commander of his forces was Sisera, who lived in
Harosheth-hagoyim.
And she sent and called
Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-
naphtali, and said unto him, Hath not the LORD God of Israel
commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount
Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of
Naphtali and of the children of
Zebulun?
She summoned
Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in
Naphtali and said to him, “Surely the LORD, the God of Israel, is
commanding you: ‘Go and march to Mount
Tabor, taking with you ten thousand men of
Naphtali and
Zebulun.
And I will draw unto thee to the river
Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin’s army, with his
chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thine hand.
And I will draw out Sisera the
commander of Jabin’s army, his
chariots, and his troops to the River
Kishon, and I will deliver him into your hand.’”
Out of Ephraim was there a root of them against Amalek; after thee, Benjamin, among thy people; out of Machir came down governors, and out of
Zebulun they that handle the pen of the writer.
Some came from Ephraim, with their roots in Amalek; Benjamin came with your people after you. The
commanders came down from Machir, the bearers of the marshal’s staff from
Zebulun.
And they said unto
Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of
Ammon.
“Come,” they said, “be our
commander, so that we can fight against the
Ammonites.”
Then
Jephthah went with the elders of
Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and
Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.
So
Jephthah went with the elders of
Gilead, and the people made him their leader and
commander. And
Jephthah repeated all his terms in the presence of the LORD at
Mizpah.
She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe.
She must not eat anything that comes from the vine, nor drink any wine or strong drink, nor eat anything unclean. She must do everything I have commanded her.”
And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and
commanded them, saying, Go and
smite the inhabitants of
Jabesh-
gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children.
So the congregation sent 12,000 of their most
valiant men and
commanded them: “Go and put to the sword those living in
Jabesh-
gilead, including women and children.
Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards;
So they commanded the Benjamites: “Go, hide in the vineyards
And when she was risen up to
glean, Boaz
commanded his young men, saying, Let her
glean even among the
sheaves, and reproach her not:
When
Ruth got up to
glean, Boaz ordered his young men, “Even if she gathers among the
sheaves, do not
insult her.
Wherefore
kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have
commanded in my
habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make
yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?
Why then do you
kick at My sacrifice and offering that I have prescribed for My dwelling place? You have honored your sons more than Me by
fattening yourselves with the best of all the offerings of My people Israel.’
And he will
appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over
fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to
reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his
chariots.
He will
appoint some for himself as
commanders of thousands and of
fifties, and others to
plow his ground, to
reap his harvest, to make his weapons of war, and to
equip his
chariots.
And when they
forgat the LORD their God, he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.
But they
forgot the LORD their God, and He sold them into the hand of Sisera the
commander of the army of Hazor, and into the hands of the Philistines and the king of Moab, who fought against them.
If ye will fear the LORD, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not
rebel against the
commandment of the LORD, then shall both ye and also the king that reigneth over you continue following the LORD your God:
If you fear the LORD and serve Him and obey His voice, and if you do not
rebel against the
command of the LORD, and if both you and the king who reigns over you follow the LORD your God, then all will be well.
But if ye will not obey the voice of the LORD, but
rebel against the
commandment of the LORD, then shall the hand of the LORD be against you, as it was against your fathers.
But if you disobey the LORD and
rebel against His
command, then the hand of the LORD will be against you as it was against your fathers.
And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done
foolishly: thou hast not kept the
commandment of the LORD thy God, which he
commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.
“You have acted
foolishly,” Samuel declared. “You have not kept the
command that the LORD your God gave you; if you had, the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.
But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.
But now your kingdom will not
endure; the LORD has sought a man after His own heart and appointed him ruler over His people, because you have not kept the
command of the LORD.”
Then Saul said to
Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And
Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die.
“Tell me what you have done,” Saul
commanded him. So
Jonathan told him, “I only tasted a little honey with the end of the staff that was in my hand. And now I must die?”
And the name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of
Ahimaaz: and the name of the captain of his host was
Abner, the son of
Ner, Saul’s uncle.
His wife’s name was Ahinoam daughter of
Ahimaaz. The name of the
commander of his army was
Abner, the son of Saul’s uncle
Ner.
It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my
commandments. And it
grieved Samuel; and he
cried unto the LORD all night.
“I
regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned away from following Me and has not carried out My instructions.” And Samuel was distressed and
cried out to the LORD all that night.
And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD.
When Samuel reached him, Saul said to him, “May the LORD
bless you. I have carried out the LORD’s instructions.”
And Saul said unto Samuel, I have
sinned: for I have
transgressed the
commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.
Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have
sinned; I have
transgressed the LORD’s
commandment and your instructions, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.
Let our lord now
command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a
cunning player on an
harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
Let our lord
command your servants here to seek out someone who can
skillfully play the
harp. Whenever the spirit of distress from God is upon you, he is to play it, and you will be well.”
And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.
And Saul commanded his servants, “Find me someone who plays well, and bring him to me.”
And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren
fare, and take their
pledge.
Take also these ten portions of

commander of their unit. Check on the
welfare of your brothers and bring back an assurance from them.
And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as
Jesse had
commanded him; and he came to the
trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and
shouted for the battle.
So David got up early in the morning, left the flock with a keeper, loaded up, and set out as
Jesse had
instructed him. He reached the camp as the army was marching out to its position and
shouting the battle cry.
And when Saul saw David go forth against the
Philistine, he said unto
Abner, the captain of the host,
Abner, whose son is this youth? And
Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.
As Saul had watched David going out to
confront the
Philistine, he said to
Abner the
commander of the army, “
Abner, whose son is this young man?” “As surely as you live, O king,”
Abner replied, “I do not know.”
Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.
Therefore Saul sent David away and gave him command of a thousand men. David led the troops out to battle and back,
And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king’s son in law.
Then Saul ordered his servants, “Speak to David privately and tell him, ‘Behold, the king is pleased with you, and all his servants love you. Now therefore, become his son-in-law.’”
Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David
behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.
Every time the
Philistine commanders came out for battle, David was more successful than all of Saul’s officers, so that his name was highly esteemed.
And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me to be there: and now, if I have found favour in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not unto the king’s table.
saying, ‘Please let me go, because our clan is holding a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has told me to be there. So now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me go and see my brothers.’ That is why he did not come to the king’s table.”
And David said unto
Ahimelech the priest, The king hath
commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business
whereabout I send thee, and what I have
commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.
“The king has given me a mission,” David replied. “He told me no one is to know about the mission or charge. And I have directed my young men to meet me at a certain place.
Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of
Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds;
Then Saul said to his servants, “
Listen, men of Benjamin! Is the son of
Jesse giving all of you fields and vineyards and making you
commanders of thousands or hundreds?
