For Joshua drew not his hand back,
wherewith he stretched out the
spear, until he had utterly
destroyed all the inhabitants of
Ai.
Joshua did not draw back the hand that held his battle
lance until he had devoted to destruction all who lived in
Ai.
And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to
destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were
sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
The Gibeonites answered, “Your servants were told clearly that the LORD your God had commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land and
wipe out all its inhabitants before you. So we greatly feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we have done this.
Now it came to pass, when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken
Ai, and had utterly
destroyed it; as he had done to
Jericho and her king, so he had done to
Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of
Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;
Now Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured
Ai and devoted it to destruction—doing to
Ai and its king as he had done to
Jericho and its king—and that the people of
Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living near them.
And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly
destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of
Jericho.
On that day Joshua captured Makkedah and put it to the sword, along with its king. He devoted to destruction
everyone in the city, leaving no survivors. So he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of
Jericho.
And they took it on that day, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly
destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to
Lachish.
That day they captured
Eglon and put it to the sword, and Joshua devoted to destruction
everyone in the city, just as he had done to
Lachish.
And they took it, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to
Eglon; but
destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein.
They captured it and put to the sword its king, all its villages, and all the people. Joshua left no survivors, just as he had done at
Eglon; he devoted to destruction
Hebron and
everyone in it.
And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they
smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly
destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to
Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to
Libnah, and to her king.
And they captured Debir, its king, and all its villages. They put them to the sword and devoted to destruction
everyone in the city, leaving no survivors. Joshua did to Debir and its king as he had done to
Hebron and as he had done to
Libnah and its king.
So Joshua
smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the
vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly
destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded.
So Joshua conquered the whole region—the hill country, the Negev, the foothills, and the slopes, together with all their kings—leaving no survivors. He devoted to destruction everything that breathed, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.
And they
smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly
destroying them: there was not any left to
breathe: and he burnt Hazor with fire.
The Israelites put
everyone in Hazor to the sword,
devoting them to destruction. Nothing that breathed remained, and Joshua burned down Hazor itself.
And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and
smote them with the edge of the sword, and he utterly
destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded.
Joshua captured all these kings and their cities and put them to the sword. He devoted them to destruction, as Moses the LORD’s servant had commanded.
And all the
spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they
smote with the edge of the sword, until they had
destroyed them, neither left they any to
breathe.
The Israelites took for themselves all the
plunder and
livestock of these cities, but they put all the people to the sword until they had completely
destroyed them, not
sparing anyone who breathed.
For it was of the LORD to
harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might
destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might
destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.
For it was of the LORD to
harden their hearts to
engage Israel in battle, so that they would be set apart for destruction and would receive no mercy, being
annihilated as the LORD had commanded Moses.
And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from
Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua
destroyed them utterly with their cities.
At that time Joshua proceeded to
eliminate the
Anakim from the hill country of
Hebron, Debir, and Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah and of Israel. Joshua devoted them to destruction, along with their cities.
And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to
destroy the land wherein the children of
Reuben and
Gad dwelt.
The Israelites were satisfied with the report, and they blessed God and spoke no more about going to war against them to destroy the land where the Reubenites and Gadites lived.
Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
But just as every good thing the LORD your God promised you has come to pass, likewise the LORD will bring upon you the
calamity He has threatened, until He has
destroyed you from this good land He has given you.
And I brought you into the land of the
Amorites, which dwelt on the other side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I
destroyed them from before you.
Later, I brought you to the land of the
Amorites who lived beyond the Jordan. They fought against you, but I delivered them into your hand, that you should possess their land when I
destroyed them before you.
And Judah went with
Simeon his brother, and they
slew the
Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly
destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.
Then the men of Judah went with their brothers the Simeonites, attacked the
Canaanites living in Zephath, and devoted the city to destruction. So it was called Hormah.
And the hand of the children of Israel
prospered, and prevailed against Jabin the king of
Canaan, until they had
destroyed Jabin king of
Canaan.
And the hand of the Israelites grew stronger and stronger against Jabin king of
Canaan until they
destroyed him.
And they
encamped against them, and
destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto
Gaza, and left no
sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor
ass.
encamping against them as far as
Gaza and
destroying the produce of the land. They left Israel with no
sustenance, neither sheep nor oxen nor
donkeys.
For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.
For the Midianites came with their
livestock and their tents like a great
swarm of locusts. They and their camels were innumerable, and they entered the land to
ravage it.
And when the people saw him, they praised their god: for they said, Our god hath delivered into our hands our enemy, and the
destroyer of our country, which
slew many of us.
And when the people saw him, they praised their god, saying: “Our god has delivered into our hands our enemy who destroyed our land and multiplied our dead.”
And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men.
And the Benjamites came out of Gibeah and cut down 22,000 Israelites on the battlefield that day.
And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.
That same day the Benjamites came out against them from Gibeah and cut down another 18,000 Israelites, all of them armed with swords.
And the LORD
smote Benjamin before Israel: and the children of Israel
destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men: all these drew the sword.

Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.
So they fled before the men of Israel toward the wilderness, but the battle overtook them, and the men coming out of the cities struck them down there.

destroy every male, and every woman that hath
lain by man.
This is what you are to do:
Devote to destruction every male, as well as every female who has had relations with a man.”
Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?
Then the elders of the congregation said, “What should we do about wives for those who remain, since the women of Benjamin have been destroyed?”
And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.
They added, “There must be heirs for the survivors of Benjamin, so that a tribe of Israel will not be
wiped out.
But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of
Ashdod, and he
destroyed them, and
smote them with
emerods, even
Ashdod and the coasts thereof.
Now the hand of the LORD was heavy on the people of
Ashdod and its vicinity,
ravaging them and
afflicting them with tumors.
Now go and
smite Amalek, and utterly
destroy all that they have, and
spare them not; but
slay both man and woman, infant and
suckling, ox and sheep,
camel and
ass.
Now go and attack the
Amalekites and
devote to destruction all that belongs to them. Do not
spare them, but put to death men and women, children and infants, oxen and sheep, camels and
donkeys.’”
And Saul said unto the
Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the
Amalekites, lest I
destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the
Kenites departed from among the
Amalekites.
And he
warned the
Kenites, “Since you showed kindness to all the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt, go on and get away from the
Amalekites. Otherwise I will
sweep you away with them.” So the
Kenites moved away from the
Amalekites.
And he took
Agag the king of the
Amalekites alive, and utterly
destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.
He captured
Agag king of Amalek alive, but devoted all the others to destruction with the sword.
But Saul and the people
spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly
destroy them: but every thing that was
vile and refuse, that they
destroyed utterly.
Saul and his troops
spared Agag, along with the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat
calves and lambs, and the best of everything else. They were unwilling to
destroy them, but they devoted to destruction all that was
despised and worthless.
And Saul said, They have brought them from the
Amalekites: for the people
spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly
destroyed.
Saul answered, “The troops brought them from the
Amalekites; they
spared the best sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the LORD your God, but the rest we devoted to destruction.”
And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly
destroy the sinners the
Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.
and sent you on a mission, saying, ‘Go and
devote to destruction the sinful
Amalekites. Fight against them until you have
wiped them out.’
And Saul said unto Samuel,
Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought
Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly
destroyed the
Amalekites.
“But I did obey the LORD,” Saul replied. “I went on the mission that the LORD gave me. I brought back
Agag king of Amalek and devoted the
Amalekites to destruction.
But the people took of the
spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly
destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in
Gilgal.
The troops took sheep and cattle from the
plunder, the best of the things devoted to destruction, in order to sacrifice them to the LORD your God at
Gilgal.”
Then said David, O LORD God of Israel, thy servant hath certainly heard that Saul seeketh to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake.
And David said, “O LORD, God of Israel, Your servant has heard that Saul intends to come to Keilah and destroy the city on my account.
Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that thou
wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou
wilt not
destroy my name out of my father’s house.
So now,
swear to me by the LORD that you will not cut off my descendants or
wipe out my name from my father’s house.”
And David said to
Abishai,
Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the LORD’S
anointed, and be guiltless?
But David said to
Abishai, “Do not
destroy him, for who can lift a hand against the LORD’s
anointed and be guiltless?”
And David said to
Abner, Art not thou a
valiant man? and who is like to thee in Israel? wherefore then hast thou not kept thy lord the king? for there came one of the people in to
destroy the king thy lord.
So David said to
Abner, “You are a man, aren’t you? And who in Israel is your equal? Why then did you not protect your lord the king when one of the people came to
destroy him?
And David said unto him, How
wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to
destroy the LORD’S
anointed?
So David asked him, “Why were you not afraid to lift your hand to
destroy the LORD’s
anointed?”
And it came to pass, after the year was
expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent
Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they
destroyed the children of
Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David
tarried still at Jerusalem.
In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war, David sent out
Joab and his servants with the whole army of Israel. They
destroyed the
Ammonites and besieged Rabbah, but David remained in Jerusalem.
And, behold, the whole family is risen against thine
handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that
smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he
slew; and we will
destroy the heir also: and so they shall
quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the earth.
Now the whole clan has risen up against your
maidservant and said, ‘Hand over the one who struck down his brother, that we may put him to death for the life of the brother whom he killed. Then we will cut off the heir as well!’ So they would
extinguish my one remaining
ember by not preserving my husband’s name or
posterity on the earth.”
Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember the LORD thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.
“Please,” she replied, “may the king
invoke the LORD your God to prevent the
avenger of blood from increasing the
devastation, so that my son may not be
destroyed!” “As surely as the LORD lives,” he
vowed, “not a hair of your son’s head will fall to the ground.”
For the king will hear, to deliver his
handmaid out of the hand of the man that would
destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.
For the king will hear and deliver his
maidservant from the hand of the man who would cut off both me and my son from God’s inheritance.’
I am one of them that are peaceable and faithful in Israel: thou seekest to
destroy a city and a mother in Israel: why
wilt thou
swallow up the inheritance of the LORD?
I am among the peaceable and faithful in Israel, but you are trying to
destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why would you
swallow up the LORD’s inheritance?”
And
Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should
swallow up or
destroy.
“Far be it!”
Joab declared. “Far be it from me to
swallow up or
destroy!
And they answered the king, The man that consumed us, and that devised against us that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the coasts of Israel,
And they answered the king, “As for the man who consumed us and
plotted against us to
exterminate us from existing within any border of Israel,
I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them; and turned not again until I had consumed them.
I pursued my enemies and destroyed them; I did not turn back until they were consumed.
Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies, that I might
destroy them that
hate me.
You have made my enemies retreat before me; I put an end to those who
hated me.
And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to
destroy it, the LORD
repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that
destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshingplace of Araunah the Jebusite.
But when the angel stretched out his hand to
destroy Jerusalem, the LORD relented from the
calamity and said to the angel who was
destroying the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand now!” At that time the angel of the LORD was by the
threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
Their children that were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel also were not able utterly to
destroy, upon those did Solomon
levy a tribute of
bondservice unto this day.
their descendants who remained in the land, those whom the Israelites were unable to
devote to destruction—Solomon conscripted these people to be forced laborers, as they are to this day.
And this thing became sin unto the house of
Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to
destroy it from off the face of the earth.
And this was the sin of the house of
Jeroboam that led to its
extermination and destruction from the face of the earth.
And also Maachah his mother, even her he removed from being queen, because she had made an
idol in a
grove; and
Asa destroyed her
idol, and burnt it by the
brook Kidron.
And it came to pass, when he reigned, that he
smote all the house of
Jeroboam; he left not to
Jeroboam any that breathed, until he had
destroyed him, according unto the saying of the LORD, which he spake by his servant
Ahijah the Shilonite:
As soon as
Baasha became king, he struck down the entire household of
Jeroboam. He did not leave to
Jeroboam anyone that breathed, but
destroyed them all according to the word that the LORD had spoken through His servant
Ahijah the Shilonite,
Thus did Zimri
destroy all the house of
Baasha, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake against
Baasha by
Jehu the prophet,
So Zimri
destroyed the entire household of
Baasha, according to the word that the LORD had spoken against
Baasha through
Jehu the prophet.
And
Ahab said unto
Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all
brooks:
peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.
Then
Ahab said to
Obadiah, “Go throughout the land to every spring and every valley. Perhaps we will find grass to keep the horses and mules alive so that we will not have to
destroy any
livestock.”
And they beat down the cities, and on every good piece of land cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the wells of water, and felled all the good trees: only in Kir-haraseth left they the stones thereof;
howbeit the slingers went about it, and
smote it.
They
destroyed the cities, and each man threw stones on every good field until it was covered. They stopped up every spring and cut down every good tree. Only Kir-haraseth was left with stones in place, but men with
slings surrounded it and attacked it as well.
Yet the LORD would not
destroy Judah for David his servant’s sake, as he promised him to give him
alway a light, and to his children.
Yet for the sake of His servant David, the LORD was unwilling to
destroy Judah, since He had promised to maintain a lamp for David and his descendants
forever.
And when he came to Samaria, he
slew all that remained unto
Ahab in Samaria, till he had
destroyed him, according to the saying of the LORD, which he spake to
Elijah.
When
Jehu came to Samaria, he struck down
everyone belonging to
Ahab who remained there, until he had
destroyed them, according to the word that the LORD had spoken to
Elijah.
Now therefore call unto me all the prophets of
Baal, all his servants, and all his priests; let none be wanting: for I have a great sacrifice to do to
Baal;
whosoever shall be wanting, he shall not live. But
Jehu did it in
subtilty, to the intent that he might
destroy the worshippers of
Baal.
Now, therefore,
summon to me all the prophets of
Baal, all his servants, and all his priests. See that no one is missing, for I have a great sacrifice for
Baal.
Whoever is missing will not live.” But
Jehu was acting
deceptively in order to
destroy the servants of
Baal.
And when
Athaliah the mother of
Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and
destroyed all the seed royal.
And the LORD was
gracious unto them, and had
compassion on them, and had respect unto them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not
destroy them, neither cast he them from his presence as yet.
But the LORD was
gracious to Israel and had
compassion on them, and He turned toward them because of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And to this day, the LORD has been unwilling to
destroy them or cast them from His presence.
Am I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
So now, was it apart from the LORD that I have come up against this place to destroy it? The LORD Himself said to me, ‘Go up against this land and destroy it.’”
Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly: and shalt thou be delivered?
Surely you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the other countries,
devoting them to destruction. Will you then be
spared?
Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have
destroyed; as Gozan, and
Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of
Eden which were in Thelasar?
Did the gods of the nations
destroyed by my fathers
rescue those nations—the gods of Gozan,
Haran, and Rezeph, and of the people of
Eden in Telassar?
Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have destroyed the nations and their lands,
Truly, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste these nations and their lands.
And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.
They have cast their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods, but only wood and stone—the work of human hands.
For he built up again the high places which
Hezekiah his father had
destroyed; and he reared up altars for
Baal, and made a
grove, as did
Ahab king of Israel; and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them.
For he rebuilt the high places that his father
Hezekiah had
destroyed, and he raised up altars for
Baal. He made an Asherah pole, as King
Ahab of Israel had done, and he worshiped and served all the host of heaven.
But they
hearkened not: and
Manasseh seduced them to do more evil than did the nations whom the LORD
destroyed before the children of Israel.
But the people did not
listen and
Manasseh led them
astray, so that they did greater evil than the nations that the LORD had
destroyed before the Israelites.
And the LORD sent against him bands of the Chaldees, and bands of the Syrians, and bands of the Moabites, and bands of the children of
Ammon, and sent them against Judah to
destroy it, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by his servants the prophets.
And these written by name came in the days of
Hezekiah king of Judah, and
smote their tents, and the habitations that were found there, and
destroyed them utterly unto this day, and dwelt in their rooms: because there was pasture there for their flocks.
These who were noted by name came in the days of
Hezekiah king of Judah. They attacked the Hamites and Meunites there in their dwellings,
devoting them to destruction even to this day. Then they settled in their place, because there was pasture for their flocks.
And they
transgressed against the God of their fathers, and went a
whoring after the gods of the people of the land, whom God
destroyed before them.
They were mighty men of
valor, famous men, and heads of their families. But they were unfaithful to the God of their fathers, and they
prostituted themselves with the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had
destroyed before them.
And it came to pass, that after the year was
expired, at the time that kings go out to battle,
Joab led forth the power of the army, and wasted the country of the children of
Ammon, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David
tarried at Jerusalem. And
Joab smote Rabbah, and
destroyed it.
In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war,
Joab led out the army and
ravaged the land of the
Ammonites. He came to Rabbah and besieged it, but David remained in Jerusalem. And
Joab attacked Rabbah and
demolished it.
Either three years’ famine; or three months to be
destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the
pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD
destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore
advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.
between three years of famine, three months of being swept away before your enemies and overtaken by their swords, or three days of the sword of the LORD—days of plague upon the land, with the angel of the LORD
ravaging every part of Israel.’ Now then, decide how I should reply to Him who sent me.”
And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to
destroy it: and as he was
destroying, the LORD
beheld, and he
repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that
destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
Then God sent an angel to
destroy Jerusalem, but as the angel was doing so, the LORD saw it and relented from the
calamity, and He said to the angel who was
destroying the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand now!” At that time the angel of the LORD was standing by the
threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
But of their children, who were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel consumed not, them did Solomon make to pay tribute until this day.
their descendants who remained in the land, those whom the Israelites were unable to destroy—Solomon conscripted these people to be forced laborers, as they are to this day.
And when the LORD saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, saying, They have humbled themselves; therefore I will not
destroy them, but I will grant them some
deliverance; and my wrath shall not be poured out upon Jerusalem by the hand of
Shishak.
When the LORD saw that they had humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, saying, “They have humbled themselves; I will not
destroy them, but will soon grant them
deliverance. My wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem through
Shishak.
And when he humbled himself, the wrath of the LORD turned from him that he would not destroy him altogether: and also in Judah things went well.
Because
Rehoboam humbled himself, the anger of the LORD turned away from him, and He did not
destroy him completely. Indeed, conditions were good in Judah.
And
Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto
Gerar: and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover themselves; for they were
destroyed before the LORD, and before his host; and they carried away very much
spoil.
Then
Asa and his army pursued them as far as
Gerar. The Cushites fell and could not recover, for they were
crushed before the LORD and His army. So the people of Judah carried off a great amount of
plunder And nation was
destroyed of nation, and city of city: for God did
vex them with all
adversity.
And now, behold, the children of
Ammon and Moab and mount
Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel
invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them, and
destroyed them not;
And now, here are the men of
Ammon, Moab, and Mount
Seir, whom You did not let Israel
invade when they came out of the land of Egypt; but Israel turned away from them and did not
destroy them.
For the children of
Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount
Seir, utterly to
slay and
destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of
Seir, every one helped to
destroy another.
The
Ammonites and Moabites rose up against the inhabitants of Mount
Seir,
devoting them to destruction. And when they had made an end to the inhabitants of
Seir, they helped to
destroy one another.
Howbeit the LORD would not
destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever.
Yet the LORD was unwilling to
destroy the house of David, because of the covenant He had made with David, and since He had promised to maintain a lamp for David and his descendants
forever.
And the destruction of
Ahaziah was of God by coming to
Joram: for when he was come, he went out with Jehoram against
Jehu the son of Nimshi, whom the LORD had
anointed to cut off the house of
Ahab.
But when
Athaliah the mother of
Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and
destroyed all the seed royal of the house of Judah.
When
Athaliah the mother of
Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to
annihilate all the royal heirs of the house of Judah.
And it came to pass at the end of the year, that the host of Syria came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and
destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the
spoil of them unto the king of Damascus.
In the spring, the army of
Aram went to war against
Joash. They entered Judah and Jerusalem and
destroyed all the leaders of the people, and they sent all the
plunder to their king in Damascus.
And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, Art thou made of the king’s counsel?
forbear; why shouldest thou be
smitten? Then the prophet
forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to
destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not
hearkened unto my counsel.
While he was still speaking, the king asked, “Have we made you the
counselor to the king? Stop! Why be struck down?” So the prophet stopped, but he said, “I know that God has determined to
destroy you, because you have done this and have not
heeded my advice.”
Now when all this was finished, all Israel that were present went out to the cities of Judah, and
brake the images in pieces, and cut down the groves, and threw down the high places and the altars out of all Judah and Benjamin, in Ephraim also and
Manasseh, until they had utterly
destroyed them all. Then all the children of Israel returned, every man to his possession, into their own cities.
When all this had ended, the Israelites in attendance went out to the cities of Judah and broke up the sacred pillars,
chopped down the Asherah poles, and
tore down the high places and altars throughout Judah and Benjamin, as well as in Ephraim and
Manasseh, until they had utterly
destroyed them all. Then all the Israelites returned to their cities, each to his own property.
Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of mine hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand?
Who among all the gods of these nations that my fathers devoted to destruction has been able to deliver his people from my hand? How then can your God deliver you from my hand?
So
Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to
err, and to do worse than the heathen, whom the LORD had
destroyed before the children of Israel.
So
Manasseh led the people of Judah and Jerusalem
astray, so that they did greater evil than the nations that the LORD had
destroyed before the Israelites.
Even to the artificers and builders gave they it, to
buy hewn stone, and timber for couplings, and to floor the houses which the kings of Judah had
destroyed.
They also gave money to the carpenters and builders to
buy dressed stone, as well as timbers for couplings and beams for the buildings that the kings of Judah had allowed to
deteriorate.
But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house
wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make
haste:
forbear thee from
meddling with God, who is with me, that he
destroy thee not.
But Neco sent messengers to him, saying, “What is the issue between you and me, O king of Judah? I have not come against you
today, but I am fighting another dynasty. God told me to
hurry; so stop
opposing God, who is with me, or He will
destroy you!”
And they burnt the house of God, and
brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and
destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof.
Then the Chaldeans set fire to the house of God and broke down the wall of Jerusalem. They burned down all the palaces and destroyed every article of value.
That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a
rebellious city, and
hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved
sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city
destroyed.
that a search should be made of the record books of your fathers. In these books you will discover and
verify that the city is a
rebellious city,
harmful to kings and provinces,
inciting sedition from ancient times. That is why this city was
destroyed.
But after that our fathers had
provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the
Chaldean, who
destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon.
But since our fathers angered the God of heaven, He delivered them into the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the
Chaldean who
destroyed this temple and carried away the people to Babylon.
