For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:
Because of these, the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience.
Fathers,
provoke not your children to anger, lest they be
discouraged.
Fathers, do not
provoke your children, so they will not become
discouraged.
Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have
persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:
who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and drove us out as well. They are displeasing to God and hostile to all men,
Therefore, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our
affliction and
distress by your faith:
For this reason, brothers, in all our
distress and persecution, we have been
reassured about you, because of your faith.
That ye be not soon
shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
not to be easily
disconcerted or
alarmed by any spirit or message or letter seeming to be from us,
alleging that the Day of the Lord has already come.
That they all might be
damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
in order that judgment may come upon all who have disbelieved the truth and delighted in wickedness.
Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw
yourselves from every brother that walketh
disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.
Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from any brother who leads an undisciplined life that is not in keeping with the tradition you received from us.
For
yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we
behaved not ourselves
disorderly among you;
For you
yourselves know how you ought to
imitate us, because we were not undisciplined among you,
For we hear that there are some which walk among you
disorderly, working not at all, but are
busybodies.
Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and
disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and
profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
We
realize that law is not
enacted for the righteous, but for the lawless and
rebellious, for the ungodly and sinful, for the unholy and
profane, for killers of father or mother, for murderers,
But for this very reason I was shown mercy, so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might
display His perfect
patience as an example to those who would believe in Him for eternal life.
I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or
dissension.
Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the
snare of the devil.
Furthermore, he must have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into
disgrace and into the
snare of the devil.
And
withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and
busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.
At the same time they will also learn to be idle, going from house to house and being not only idle, but also gossips and
busybodies,
discussing things they should not mention.
Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not
blasphemed.
All who are under the yoke of slavery should regard their masters as fully worthy of honor, so that God’s name and our teaching will not be discredited.
And they that have believing masters, let them not
despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and
exhort.
Those who have believing masters should not show
disrespect because they are brothers, but should serve them all the more, since those receiving their good service are beloved believers. Teach and
encourage these principles.
If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to
wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to
godliness;
If
anyone teaches another doctrine and
disagrees with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and with godly teaching,
Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is
godliness: from such withdraw
thyself.
and constant friction between men of
depraved mind who are devoid of the truth. These men regard
godliness as a means of gain.
That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, and to be generous and ready to share,
But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.
A large house contains not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay. Some indeed are for honorable use, but others are for common use.
Now as
Jannes and Jambres
withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds,
reprobate concerning the faith.
Just as
Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men
oppose the truth. They are
depraved in mind and
disqualified from the faith.
Whose mouths must be stopped, who
subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for
filthy lucre’s sake.
who must be silenced. For the sake of dishonorable gain, they undermine entire households and teach things they should not.
to be self-
controlled, pure, managers of their households, kind, and
submissive to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be
discredited.
For if the word spoken by angels was
stedfast, and every
transgression and
disobedience received a just recompence of reward;
For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every
transgression and
disobedience received its just punishment,
God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with
divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
and was
affirmed by God through signs, wonders, various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit
distributed according to His will.
And to whom
sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?
And to whom did He
swear that they would never enter His rest? Was it not to those who
disobeyed?
Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:
Since, then, it remains for some to enter His rest, and since those who formerly heard the good news did not enter because of their disobedience,
Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.
Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following the same pattern of disobedience.
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any
twoedged sword,
piercing even to the dividing
asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and
marrow, and is a
discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and
marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to
discern both good and evil.
But solid food is for the
mature, who by constant use have trained their senses to
distinguish good from evil.
For there is
verily a
disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof.
So the former commandment is set aside because it was weak and useless
Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.
It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, because they did not
abide by My covenant, and I
disregarded them, declares the Lord.
In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to
vanish away.
By speaking of a new covenant, He has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and
aging will soon
disappear.
And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.
Above the ark were the
cherubim of glory, overshadowing the mercy seat. But we cannot
discuss these things in detail now.
The Holy Ghost this
signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:
By this arrangement the Holy Spirit was showing that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still standing.
Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.
He valued
disgrace for Christ above the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking
ahead to his reward.
By faith the
harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the
spies with peace.
And you have forgotten the
exhortation that addresses you as sons: “My son, do not take lightly the
discipline of the Lord, and do not lose heart when He rebukes you.
For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
For the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastises every son He receives.”
If ye
endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
Endure suffering as
discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not
disciplined by his father?
If you do not experience
discipline like
everyone else, then you are
illegitimate children and not true sons.
Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
Furthermore, we have all had earthly fathers who
disciplined us, and we respected them. Should we not much more submit to the Father of our spirits and live?
For they
verily for a few days
chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his
holiness.
Our fathers
disciplined us for a short time as they thought best, but God
disciplines us for our good, so that we may share in His
holiness.
Now no
chastening for the present seemeth to be
joyous, but
grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields a harvest of righteousness and peace to those who have been trained by it.
And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is
lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be
healed.
Make straight paths for your feet, so that the
lame may not be
disabled, but rather
healed.
Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.
Therefore let us go to Him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace He bore.
James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad,
greeting.
James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes of the
Dispersion: Greetings.
Pure religion and
undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their
affliction, and to keep himself
unspotted from the world.
Pure and
undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their
distress, and to keep
oneself from being
polluted by the world.
Are ye not then partial in
yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
But ye have
despised the poor. Do not rich men
oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?
But you have
dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who
oppress you and
drag you into court?
For where
envying and
strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
For where jealousy and
selfish ambition exist, there will be
disorder and every evil practice.
To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
As you come to Him, the living stone, rejected by men but chosen and precious in God’s sight,
Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be
disobedient, the stone which the builders
disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
To you who believe, then, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,”
and, “A stone of
stumbling and a rock of
offense.” They
stumble because they
disobey the word—and to this they were appointed.
But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a
meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
but from the inner
disposition of your heart, the
unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in God’s sight.
Which
sometime were
disobedient, when once the
longsuffering of God waited in the days of
Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
who
disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of
Noah while the ark was being built. In the ark a few people, only eight souls, were saved through water.
For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God?
And delivered just Lot,
vexed with the
filthy conversation of the wicked:
and if He
rescued Lot, a righteous man
distressed by the
depraved conduct of the lawless
But the day of the Lord will come as a
thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall
melt with
fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
But the Day of the Lord will come like a
thief. The heavens will
disappear with a
roar, the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and its works will be laid bare.
Seeing then that all these things shall be
dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and
godliness,
Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to conduct
yourselves in
holiness and
godliness Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be
dissolved, and the elements shall
melt with
fervent heat?
as you
anticipate and
hasten the coming of the day of God, when the heavens will be destroyed by fire and the elements will
melt in the heat.
As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable
wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
He writes this way in all his letters, speaking in them about such matters. Some parts of his letters are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people
distort, as they do the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.
In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil:
whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
By this the children of God are
distinguished from the children of the devil:
Anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is
anyone who does not love his brother.
Even as
Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to
fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the
vengeance of eternal fire.
In like manner,
Sodom and
Gomorrah and the cities around them, who
indulged in sexual immorality and pursued strange flesh, are on
display as an example of those who
sustain the punishment of eternal fire.
But even the
archangel Michael, when he
disputed with the devil over the body of Moses, did not
presume to bring a
slanderous charge against him, but said, “The Lord
rebuke you!”
These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage.
These men are
discontented grumblers, following after their own lusts; their mouths
spew arrogance; they
flatter others for their own advantage.
Those I love, I
rebuke and
discipline. Therefore be earnest and
repent.
And the winepress was
trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.
And the winepress was
trodden outside the city, and the blood that flowed from it rose as high as the bridles of the horses for a
distance of 1,600
stadia.
Standing
afar off for the fear of her
torment, saying,
Alas,
alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
In fear of her
torment, they will stand at a
distance and cry out: “
Woe,
woe to the great city, the mighty city of Babylon! For in a single hour your judgment has come.”
The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand
afar off for the fear of her
torment,
weeping and
wailing,
The merchants who sold these things and grew their wealth from her will stand at a
distance, in fear of her
torment. They will
weep and
mourn,
For in one hour so great riches is come to
nought. And every
shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood
afar off,
For in a single hour such
fabulous wealth has been destroyed!” Every
shipmaster,
passenger, and
sailor, and all who make their living from the sea, will stand at a
distance And these keep watch round about him, neither may any one depart, and do his own business, neither disobey they him in any thing.
And yet for all this the king
gaped and
gazed upon her with open mouth: if she
laughed upon him, he
laughed also: but if she took any
displeasure at him, the king was
fain to
flatter, that she might be
reconciled to him again.
And to
discover unto us a light in the house of the Lord our God, and to give us food in the time of our
servitude.
And I said, She cannot: but must do it by distance of time.
For like as a young child may not bring forth the things that belong to the aged, even so have I disposed the world which I created.
For my spirit was greatly set on fire, and my soul was in distress.
Now therefore why
disquietest thou
thyself, seeing thou art but a corruptible man? and why art thou moved, whereas thou art but
mortal?
That the thing which is fashioned may be
nourished for a time, till thou
disposest it to thy mercy.
For we and our fathers do
languish of such
diseases: but because of us sinners thou shalt be called
merciful.
For what is man, that thou shouldest take displeasure at him? or what is a corruptible generation, that thou shouldest be so bitter toward it?
For indeed I will not think on the
disposition of them which have
sinned before death, before judgment, before destruction:
But I will
rejoice over the
disposition of the righteous, and I will remember also their
pilgrimage, and the salvation, and the reward, that they shall have.
What aileth thee? and why art thou so disquieted? and why is thine understanding troubled, and the thoughts of thine heart?
For they obeyed not thy commandments: wherefore thou hast delivered us for a
spoil, and unto captivity, and unto death, and for a
proverb of reproach to all the nations among whom we are
dispersed.
Now therefore deal with me as seemeth best unto thee, and command my spirit to be taken from me, that I may be
dissolved, and become earth: for it is profitable for me to die rather than to live, because I have heard false reproaches, and have much sorrow: command therefore that I may now be delivered out of this
distress, and go into the
everlasting place: turn not thy face away from me.
And likewise Edna his wife and Sara his daughter
wept. Moreover they entertained them
cheerfully; and after that they had killed a ram of the flock, they set store of meat on the table. Then said Tobias to Raphael, Brother Azarias, speak of those things of which thou
didst talk in the way, and let this business be
dispatched.
But all the inhabitants of the land made light of the commandment of Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians, neither went they with him to the battle; for they were not afraid of him:
yea, he was before them as one man, and they sent away his ambassadors from them without effect, and with
disgrace.
And thou shalt go against all the west country, because they disobeyed my commandment.
And he
dispersed the people, every one to their own charge; and they went unto the walls and towers of their city, and sent the women and children into their houses: and they were very low brought in the city.
For our
servitude shall not be directed to favour: but the Lord our God shall turn it to
dishonour.
For this is not the first day wherein thy wisdom is manifested; but from the beginning of thy days all the people have known thy understanding, because the disposition of thine heart is good.
Now when the evening was come, his servants made
haste to depart, and Bagoas shut his tent without, and
dismissed the waiters from the presence of his lord; and they went to their beds: for they were all
weary, because the feast had been long.
But the
Almighty Lord hath
disappointed them by the hand of a woman.
