And both these kings’ hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not
prosper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed.
And the two kings, with their hearts bent on
evil, will speak lies at the same table, but to no
avail, for still the end will come at the appointed time.
Gilead is a city of them that work iniquity, and is
polluted with blood.
And they consider not in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness: now their own doings have
beset them about; they are before my face.
But they fail to consider in their hearts that I remember all their evil. Now their deeds are all around them; they are before My face.
They make the king
glad with their wickedness, and the princes with their lies.
They delight the king with their evil, and the princes with their lies.
Though I have bound and strengthened their arms, yet do they imagine mischief against me.
Although I trained and strengthened their arms, they plot evil against Me.
All their wickedness is in
Gilgal: for there I
hated them: for the wickedness of their doings I will drive them out of mine house, I will love them no more: all their princes are revolters.
All their
evil appears at
Gilgal, for there I
hated them. I will drive them from My house for the wickedness of their deeds. I will no longer love them; all their leaders are
rebellious.
And
rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is
gracious and
merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the
evil.
So
rend your hearts and not your garments, and return to the LORD your God. For He is
gracious and
compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion. And He relents from sending
disaster.
Shall a
trumpet be
blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be
evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?
If a ram’s horn sounds in a city, do the people not
tremble? If
calamity comes to a city, has not the LORD caused it?
Therefore the
prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an
evil time.
Therefore, the
prudent keep silent in such times, for the days are
evil.
Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.
Seek good, not evil, so that you may live. And the LORD, the God of Hosts, will be with you, as you have claimed.
Hate the
evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be
gracious unto the
remnant of Joseph.
Hate evil and love good; establish justice in the gate. Perhaps the LORD, the God of Hosts, will be
gracious to the
remnant of Joseph.”
Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near;
You dismiss the day of
calamity and bring near a reign of violence.
And though they go into captivity before their enemies, thence will I command the sword, and it shall
slay them: and I will set mine eyes upon them for
evil, and not for good.
Though they are driven by their enemies into captivity, there I will command the sword to
slay them. I will fix My eyes upon them for
harm and not for good.”
All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, which say, The evil shall not overtake nor prevent us.
All the sinners among My people will die by the sword— all those who say, ‘
Disaster will never draw near or
confront us.’”
And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this
evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon
Jonah.
“Come!” said the sailors to one another. “Let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this
calamity that is upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on
Jonah.
Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
“Tell us now,” they demanded, “who is to
blame for this
calamity that is upon us? What is your occupation, and where have you come from? What is your country, and who are your people?”
But let man and beast be covered with
sackcloth, and cry
mightily unto God:
yea, let them turn every one from his
evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.
Furthermore, let both man and beast be covered with
sackcloth, and have
everyone call out earnestly to God. Let each one turn from his
evil ways and from the violence in his hands.
And God saw their works, that they turned from their
evil way; and God
repented of the
evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
When God saw their actions—that they had turned from their
evil ways—He relented from the
disaster He had threatened to bring upon them.
And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto
Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a
gracious God, and
merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the
evil.
So he prayed to the LORD, saying, “O LORD, is this not what I said while I was still in my own country? This is why I was so quick to
flee toward
Tarshish. I knew that You are a
gracious and
compassionate God, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion—One who relents from sending
disaster.
For the inhabitant of Maroth waited carefully for good: but evil came down from the LORD unto the gate of Jerusalem.
For the dwellers of Maroth pined for good, but
calamity came down from the LORD, even to the gate of Jerusalem.
Woe to them that
devise iniquity, and work
evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they
practise it, because it is in the power of their hand.
Woe to those who
devise iniquity and plot
evil on their beds! At morning’s light they
accomplish it because the power is in their hands.
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, against this family do I
devise an
evil, from which ye shall not remove your necks; neither shall ye go
haughtily: for this time is
evil.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: “I am
planning against this nation a
disaster from which you cannot free your necks. Then you will not walk so proudly, for it will be a time of
calamity.
Who
hate the good, and love the
evil; who
pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones;
You
hate good and love
evil. You
tear the skin from my people and strip the flesh from their bones.
Then shall they cry unto the LORD, but he will not hear them: he will even hide his face from them at that time, as they have
behaved themselves ill in their doings.
Then they will cry out to the LORD, but He will not answer them. At that time He will hide His face from them because of the evil they have done.
The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for
hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they
lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us? none
evil can come upon us.
Her leaders judge for a
bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets practice
divination for money. Yet they
lean upon the LORD, saying, “Is not the LORD among us? No
disaster can come upon us.”
That they may do
evil with both hands earnestly, the prince asketh, and the judge asketh for a reward; and the great man, he uttereth his
mischievous desire: so they
wrap it up.
Both hands are skilled at
evil; the prince and the judge demand a
bribe. When the powerful utters his
evil desire, they all
conspire together.
There is one come out of thee, that imagineth evil against the LORD, a wicked counsellor.
Thou art of purer eyes than to behold
evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal
treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he?
Your eyes are too pure to look upon
evil, and You cannot
tolerate wrongdoing. So why do You
tolerate the faithless? Why are You silent while the wicked
swallow up those more righteous than themselves?
Woe to him that coveteth an
evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of
evil!
Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain, to place his nest on high and escape the hand of
disaster!
And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with candles, and
punish the men that are settled on their
lees: that say in their heart, The LORD will not do good, neither will he do
evil.
And at that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and
punish the men settled in
complacency, who say to themselves, ‘The LORD will do nothing, either good or bad.’
The LORD hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the king of Israel, even the LORD, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more.
The LORD has taken away your punishment; He has turned back your enemy. Israel’s King, the LORD, is among you; no longer will you fear any
harm.
Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have
cried, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye now from your
evil ways, and from your
evil doings: but they did not hear, nor
hearken unto me, saith the LORD.
Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets proclaimed that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Turn now from your
evil ways and deeds.’ But they did not
listen or pay attention to Me, declares the LORD.
And
oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine
evil against his brother in your heart.
Do not
oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. And do not plot
evil in your hearts against one another.’
And let none of you imagine
evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I
hate, saith the LORD.
do not plot
evil in your hearts against your
neighbor, and do not love to
swear falsely, for I
hate all these things,” declares the LORD.
And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not
evil? and if ye offer the
lame and sick, is it not
evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the LORD of hosts.
When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is it not wrong? And when you present the
lame and sick ones, is it not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you or show you favor?” asks the LORD of Hosts.
Ye have
wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein have we
wearied him? When ye say, Every one that doeth
evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and he delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?
You have
wearied the LORD with your words; yet you ask, “How have we
wearied Him?” By saying, “All who do
evil are good in the sight of the LORD, and in them He delights,” or, “Where is the God of justice?”
And now we call the proud happy;
yea, they that work wickedness are set up;
yea, they that
tempt God are even delivered.
So now we call the
arrogant blessed. Not only do
evildoers prosper, they even test God and escape.’”
For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an
oven; and all the proud,
yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be
stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.
“For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace, when all the
arrogant and every
evildoer will be
stubble; the day is coming when I will set them
ablaze,” says the LORD of Hosts. “Not a root or branch will be left to them.”
Blessed are ye, when men shall
revile you, and
persecute you, and shall say all manner of
evil against you falsely, for my sake.
Blessed are you when people
insult you,
persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of
evil against you because of Me.
Simply let your ‘
Yes’ be ‘
Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ Anything more comes from the
evil one.
But I say unto you, That ye resist not
evil: but
whosoever shall
smite thee on thy right
cheek, turn to him the other also.
But I tell you not to resist an
evil person. If someone slaps you on your right
cheek, turn to him the other also;
That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from
evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.
Amen.
And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from the
evil one.’
But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
Take therefore no thought for the
morrow: for the
morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the
evil thereof.
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.
A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.
And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?
But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said, “Why do you
harbor evil in your hearts?
O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
You
brood of vipers, how can you who are
evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.
A good man out of the good
treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an
evil man out of the
evil treasure bringeth forth
evil things.
The good man brings good things out of his good store of
treasure, and the
evil man brings
evil things out of his
evil store of
treasure.
But he answered and said unto them, An
evil and
adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet
Jonas:
Jesus replied, “A wicked and
adulterous generation demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of the prophet
Jonah.
When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.
When
anyone hears the message of the kingdom but does not understand it, the
evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path.
The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;
The field is the world, and the good seed represents the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one,
For out of the heart proceed
evil thoughts, murders,
adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
For out of the heart come
evil thoughts, murder,
adultery, sexual immorality,
theft, false testimony, and
slander.
Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?
Do I not have the right to do as I please with what is mine? Or are you
envious because I am generous?’
So those servants went out into the
highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the
wedding was furnished with guests.
So the servants went out into the streets and gathered
everyone they could find, both
evil and good, and the
wedding hall was filled with guests.
But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why
tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?
But Jesus knew their evil intent and said, “You hypocrites, why are you testing Me?
But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
But suppose that servant is wicked and says in his heart, ‘My master will be away a long time.’
And the governor said, Why, what
evil hath he done? But they
cried out the more, saying, Let him be
crucified.
And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.
And He asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?” But they were silent.
For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed
evil thoughts,
adulteries, fornications, murders,
For from within the hearts of men come
evil thoughts, sexual immorality,
theft, murder,
adultery,
All these
evil things come from within, and
defile the man.
All these
evils come from within, and these are what
defile a man.”
But Jesus said,
Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a
miracle in my name, that can lightly speak
evil of me.
“Do not stop him,” Jesus replied. “For no one who performs a
miracle in My name can turn around and speak
evil of Me.
Then
Pilate said unto them, Why, what
evil hath he done? And they
cried out the more exceedingly,
Crucify him.
But Herod the
tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the
evils which Herod had done,
But when he
rebuked Herod the
tetrarch regarding his brother’s wife Herodias and all the
evils he had done,
Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?
Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”
Blessed are ye, when men shall
hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as
evil, for the Son of man’s sake.
Blessed are you when people
hate you, and when they
exclude you and
insult you and
reject your name as
evil because of the Son of Man.
But love ye your enemies, and do good, and
lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the
unthankful and to the
evil.
But love your enemies, do good to them, and
lend to them, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He is kind to the
ungrateful and wicked.
A good man out of the good
treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an
evil man out of the
evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is
evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
The good man brings good things out of the good
treasure of his heart, and the
evil man brings
evil things out of the
evil treasure of his heart. For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.
And in that same hour he cured many of their
infirmities and plagues, and of
evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.
At that very hour Jesus
healed many people of their diseases, afflictions, and
evil spirits, and He gave sight to many who were blind.
And certain women, which had been
healed of
evil spirits and
infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,
as well as some women who had been
healed of
evil spirits and
infirmities: Mary called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,
And
forgive us our sins; for we also
forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into
temptation; but deliver us from
evil.
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an
evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of
Jonas the prophet.
As the crowds were increasing, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of
Jonah.
The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.
Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are bad, your body is full of darkness.
But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.
And he will answer, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers.’
But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise
Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art
tormented.
But Abraham answered, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, while
Lazarus received bad things. But now he is comforted here, while you are in
agony.
The
Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I
thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this
publican.
The
Pharisee stood by himself and prayed, ‘God, I
thank You that I am not like the other men—swindlers,
evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax
collector.
And he said unto them the third time, Why, what
evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore
chastise him, and let him go.
A third time he said to them, “What
evil has this man done? I have found in Him no
offense worthy of death. So after I
punish Him, I will release Him.”
And this is the
condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were
evil.
And this is the
verdict: The Light has come into the world, but men loved the darkness rather than the Light because their deeds were
evil.
For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
Everyone who does
evil hates the Light, and does not come into the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.
And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done
evil, unto the resurrection of
damnation.
and come out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
The world cannot
hate you; but me it hateth, because I
testify of it, that the works thereof are
evil.
The world cannot
hate you, but it hates Me, because I
testify that its works are
evil.
I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
I am not asking that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one.
Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?
Jesus replied, “If I said something wrong,
testify as to what was wrong. But if I spoke correctly, why did you strike Me?”
And God spake on this wise, That his seed should
sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into
bondage, and
entreat them
evil four hundred years.
God told him that his descendants would be foreigners in a strange land, and that they would be
enslaved and mistreated four hundred years.
The same dealt
subtilly with our kindred, and
evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.
He exploited our people and
oppressed our fathers, forcing them to
abandon their infants so they would die.
Then
Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much
evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem:
But
Ananias answered, “Lord, many people have told me about this man and all the
harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem.
But the unbelieving Jews
stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds
evil affected against the brethren.
But the unbelieving Jews
stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.
But when
divers were
hardened, and believed not, but spake
evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one
Tyrannus.
So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.
so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and the diseases and evil spirits left them.
Then certain of the
vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had
evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We
adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.
Now there were some
itinerant Jewish exorcists who tried to
invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those with
evil spirits. They would say, “I bind you by Jesus, whom Paul proclaims.”
And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?
Eventually, one of the evil spirits answered them, “Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you?”
And the man in whom the
evil spirit was
leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
Then the man with the
evil spirit
jumped on them and overpowered them all. The attack was so violent that they ran out of the house naked and wounded.
Then said Paul, I
wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak
evil of the ruler of thy people.
“Brothers,” Paul replied, “I was not aware that he was the high priest, for it is written: ‘Do not speak evil about the ruler of your people.’”
And there arose a great cry: and the
scribes that were of the
Pharisees’ part arose, and
strove, saying, We find no
evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.
A great
clamor arose, and some
scribes from the party of the
Pharisees got up and
contended sharply, “We find nothing wrong with this man. What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”
Or else let these same here say, if they have found any evil doing in me, while I stood before the council,
Otherwise, let these men state for themselves any crime they found in me when I stood before the
Sanhedrin,
