He that soweth iniquity shall
reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall
fail.
He who sows injustice will
reap disaster, and the rod of his
fury will be destroyed.
But those riches perish by evil
travail: and he begetteth a son, and there is nothing in his hand.
or wealth lost in a
failed venture, so when that man has a son there is nothing to pass on.
Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?
even if he lives a thousand years twice over but fails to enjoy his prosperity. Do not all go to the same place?
Yea also, when he that is a
fool walketh by the way, his wisdom
faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a
fool.
Even as the
fool walks along the road, his sense is lacking, and he shows
everyone that he is a
fool.
He that observeth the wind shall not
sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not
reap.
He who watches the wind will
fail to
sow, and he who observes the clouds will
fail to
reap.
Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the
almond tree shall
flourish, and the
grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall
fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:
when men fear the heights and dangers of the road, when the
almond tree blossoms, the
grasshopper loses its spring, and the caper
berry shrivels— for then man goes to his eternal home and mourners walk the streets.
I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.
I opened for my beloved, but he had turned and gone. My heart
sank at his departure. I sought him, but did not find him. I called, but he did not answer.
And the
harp, and the
viol, the
tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands.
At their feasts are the
lyre and
harp, tambourines and flutes and wine. They disregard the actions of the LORD and
fail to see the work of His hands.
For the waters of Nimrim shall be
desolate: for the hay is
withered away, the grass
faileth, there is no green thing.
The waters of Nimrim are dried up, and the grass is
withered; the vegetation is gone, and the
greenery is no more.
Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength, therefore shalt thou plant pleasant plants, and shalt set it with strange slips:
For you have forgotten the God of your salvation and
failed to remember the Rock of your refuge. Therefore, though you
cultivate delightful plots and set out cuttings from
exotic vines—
And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards.
Then the spirit of the Egyptians will be
emptied out from among them, and I will
frustrate their plans, so that they will resort to idols and spirits of the dead, to mediums and spiritists.
And the waters shall fail from the sea, and the river shall be wasted and dried up.
The waters of the Nile will dry up, and the riverbed will be
parched and empty.
For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Within a year, according to the years of an
hireling, and all the glory of
Kedar shall
fail:
For this is what the Lord says to me: “Within one year, as a
hired worker would count it, all the glory of
Kedar will be gone.
Let favour be shewed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness: in the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly, and will not behold the majesty of the LORD.
Though grace is shown to the wicked man, he does not learn righteousness. In the land of righteousness he acts unjustly and fails to see the majesty of the LORD.
Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant.
this iniquity of yours is like a breach about to
fail, a
bulge in a high wall, whose
collapse will come suddenly— in an instant!
Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When the LORD shall stretch out his hand, both he that helpeth shall fall, and he that is
holpen shall fall down, and they all shall
fail together.
But the Egyptians are men, not God; their horses are flesh, not spirit. When the LORD stretches out His hand, the helper will
stumble, and the one he helps will fall; both will perish together.
For the
vile person will speak
villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to
practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the
hungry, and he will cause the drink of the
thirsty to
fail.
Many days and years shall ye be troubled, ye careless women: for the
vintage shall
fail, the gathering shall not come.
In a little more than a year you will
tremble, O secure ones. For the
grape harvest will
fail and the fruit harvest will not arrive.
Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall
fail, none shall want her
mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them.
Search and read the
scroll of the LORD: Not one of these will go missing, not one will lack her
mate, because He has ordered it by His mouth, and He will gather them by His Spirit.
Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.
Lift up your eyes on high: Who created all these? He leads forth the
starry host by number; He calls each one by name. Because of His great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.
When the poor and
needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue
faileth for
thirst, I the LORD will hear them, I the God of Israel will not
forsake them.
The poor and
needy seek water, but there is none; their tongues are
parched with
thirst. I, the LORD, will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not
forsake them.
He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.
He will not grow weak or discouraged before He has established justice on the earth. In His law the islands will put their hope.”
They that make a
graven image are all of them vanity; and their
delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be
ashamed.
All makers of idols are nothing, and the things they
treasure are worthless. Their witnesses
fail to see or
comprehend, so they are put to shame.
The smith with the
tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms:
yea, he is
hungry, and his strength
faileth: he drinketh no water, and is
faint.
The
blacksmith takes a tool and labors over the coals; he fashions an
idol with hammers and forges it with his strong arms. Yet he grows
hungry and loses his strength; he
fails to drink water and grows
faint.
Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall
vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.
Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth below; for the heavens will
vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, and its people will die like gnats. But My salvation will last
forever, and My righteousness will never
fail.
The
captive exile hasteneth that he may be loosed, and that he should not die in the pit, nor that his bread should
fail.
The
captive will soon be freed; he will not die in the
dungeon, and his bread will not be lacking.
And of whom hast thou been afraid or feared, that thou hast
lied, and hast not remembered me, nor laid it to thy heart? have not I held my peace even of old, and thou fearest me not?
Whom have you
dreaded and feared, so that you
lied and
failed to remember Me or take this to heart? Is it not because I have long been silent that you do not fear Me?
For I will not
contend for ever, neither will I be always
wroth: for the spirit should
fail before me, and the souls which I have made.
For I will not
accuse you
forever, nor will I always be
angry; for then the spirit of man would grow weak before Me, with the breath of those I have made.
And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in
drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters
fail not.
The LORD will always guide you; He will satisfy you in a sun-
scorched land and
strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never
fail.
Yea, truth
faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey: and the LORD saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.
Truth is missing, and
whoever turns from evil becomes prey. The LORD looked and was displeased that there was no justice.
There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the
sinner being an hundred years old shall be
accursed.
No longer will a
nursing infant live but a few days, or an old man
fail to live out his years. For the youth will die at a hundred years, and he who
fails to reach a hundred will be considered
accursed.
And the wild
asses did stand in the high places, they
snuffed up the wind like
dragons; their eyes did
fail, because there was no grass.
Wild
donkeys stand on barren heights; they
pant for air like jackals; their eyes
fail for lack of pasture.”
Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuseth to be
healed?
wilt thou be altogether unto me as a
liar, and as waters that
fail?
Why is my pain unending, and my wound incurable, refusing to be
healed? You have indeed become like a
mirage to me— water that is not there.
Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong; that useth his neighbour’s service without wages, and giveth him not for his work;
“
Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness, and his upper rooms without justice, who makes his countrymen serve without pay, and
fails to pay their wages,
And they came in, and possessed it; but they obeyed not thy voice, neither walked in thy law; they have done nothing of all that thou commandedst them to do: therefore thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them:
They came in and possessed it, but they did not obey Your voice or walk in Your law. They
failed to perform all that You commanded them to do, and so You have brought upon them all this
disaster.
Neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer burnt offerings, and to
kindle meat offerings, and to do sacrifice continually.
nor will the priests who are Levites ever fail to have a man before Me to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, and to present sacrifices.”
Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever.
this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Jonadab son of Rechab will never fail to have a man to stand before Me.’”
Joy and
gladness are removed from the
orchard and from the fields of Moab. I have stopped the flow of wine from the presses; no one treads them with shouts of joy; their shouts are not for joy.
The mighty men of Babylon have forborn to fight, they have remained in their holds: their might hath failed; they became as women: they have burned her dwellingplaces; her bars are broken.
The warriors of Babylon have stopped fighting; they sit in their strongholds. Their strength is exhausted; they have become like women. Babylon’s homes have been set
ablaze, the bars of her gates are broken.
Mine eyes do
fail with tears, my
bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the children and the sucklings
swoon in the streets of the city.
My eyes
fail from
weeping; I am
churning within. My heart is poured out in grief over the destruction of the daughter of my people, because children and infants
faint in the streets of the city.
It is of the LORD’S
mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions
fail not.
Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His
mercies never
fail.
As for us, our eyes as yet failed for our vain help: in our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save us.
All the while our eyes were failing as we looked in vain for help. We watched from our towers for a nation that could not save us.
Son of man, what is that
proverb that ye have in the land of Israel, saying, The days are prolonged, and every vision
faileth?
“Son of man, what is this
proverb that you have in the land of Israel: ‘The days go by, and every vision
fails’?
Her priests have
violated my law, and have
profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and
profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have
hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am
profaned among them.
Her priests do violence to My law and
profane My holy things. They make no distinction between the holy and the common, and they
fail to distinguish between the clean and the unclean. They disregard My Sabbaths, so that I am
profaned among them.
Then
whosoever heareth the sound of the
trumpet, and taketh not
warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.
Then if
anyone hears the sound of the horn but
fails to
heed the
warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood will be on his own head.
He heard the sound of the
trumpet, and took not
warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh
warning shall deliver his soul.
Since he heard the sound of the horn but
failed to
heed the
warning, his blood will be on his own head. If he had
heeded the
warning, he would have saved his life.
But if the
watchman see the sword come, and blow not the
trumpet, and the people be not
warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the
watchman’s hand.
But if the
watchman sees the sword coming and
fails to blow the horn to
warn the people, and the sword comes and takes away a life, then that one will be taken away in his iniquity, but I will hold the
watchman accountable for his blood.’
And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not
fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.
Along both banks of the river, fruit trees of all kinds will grow. Their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not
fail. Each month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will be used for food and their leaves for
healing.”
But hast lifted up
thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have
drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not
glorified:
Instead, you have
exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven. The vessels from His house were brought to you, and as you
drank wine from them with your nobles, wives, and concubines, you praised your gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you have
failed to
glorify the God who holds in His hand your very breath and all your ways.
And in those times there shall many stand up against the king of the south: also the robbers of thy people shall
exalt themselves to establish the vision; but they shall fall.
In those times many will rise up against the king of the South. Violent ones among your own people will
exalt themselves in
fulfillment of the vision, but they will
fail.
And they consider not in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness: now their own doings have
beset them about; they are before my face.
But they fail to consider in their hearts that I remember all their evil. Now their deeds are all around them; they are before My face.
For they have sown the wind, and they shall
reap the
whirlwind: it hath no
stalk: the
bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall
swallow it up.
For they
sow the wind, and they shall
reap the
whirlwind. There is no standing grain; what
sprouts fails to yield flour. Even if it should produce, the foreigners would
swallow it up.
The floor and the winepress shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail in her.
The
threshing floor and winepress will not feed them, and the new wine will
fail them.
The sorrows of a
travailing woman shall come upon him: he is an unwise son; for he should not stay long in the place of the breaking forth of children.
Labor pains come upon him, but he is an unwise son. When the time arrives, he
fails to present himself at the opening of the
womb.
Though he be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the wind of the LORD shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall
spoil the
treasure of all pleasant vessels.
Although he
flourishes among his brothers, an east wind will come— a wind from the LORD rising up from the desert. His fountain will
fail, and his spring will run dry. The wind will
plunder his treasury of every precious article.
The field is wasted, the land mourneth; for the corn is wasted: the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth.
The field is ruined; the land mourns. For the grain is destroyed, the new wine is dried up, and the oil fails.
Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have
despised the law of the LORD, and have not kept his commandments, and their lies caused them to
err, after the which their fathers have walked:
This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Judah, even four, I will not
revoke My judgment, because they
reject the Law of the LORD and
fail to keep His statutes; they are led
astray by the lies in which their fathers walked.
Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not
strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver himself:
Escape will fail the swift, the strong will not prevail by his strength, and the mighty will not save his life.
You drink wine by the bowlful and
anoint yourselves with the finest oils, but you
fail to
grieve over the ruin of Joseph.
Hear this, O ye that
swallow up the
needy, even to make the poor of the land to
fail,
Hear this, you who
trample the
needy, who do away with the poor of the land,
Although the fig tree shall not
blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall
fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no
herd in the stalls:
Though the fig tree does not
bud and no fruit is on the vines, though the olive crop
fails and the fields produce no food, though the sheep are cut off from the fold and no cattle are in the stalls,
The just LORD is in the midst thereof; he will not do iniquity: every morning
doth he bring his judgment to light, he
faileth not; but the unjust knoweth no shame.
The LORD within her is righteous; He does no wrong. He applies His justice morning by morning; He does not
fail at
dawn, yet the unjust know no shame.
And I will
rebuke the
devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.
I will
rebuke the
devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your land, and the vine in your field will not
fail to produce fruit,” says the LORD of Hosts.
And why beholdest thou the
mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
Why do you look at the
speck in your brother’s eye, but
fail to notice the beam in your own eye?
But he shall receive an
hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.
will
fail to receive a
hundredfold in the present age—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and fields, along with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life.
For with God nothing shall be impossible.
For no word from God will ever fail.”
And why beholdest thou the
mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
Why do you look at the
speck in your brother’s eye, but
fail to notice the beam in your own eye?
Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the
mote that is in thine eye, when thou
thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou
hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the
mote that is in thy brother’s eye.
How can you say, ‘Brother, let me take the
speck out of your eye,’ while you
yourself fail to see the beam in your own eye? You
hypocrite! First take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the
speck from your brother’s eye.
Sell that ye have, and give
alms; provide
yourselves bags which wax not old, a
treasure in the heavens that
faileth not, where no
thief approacheth, neither
moth corrupteth.
And I say unto you, Make to
yourselves friends of the
mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye
fail, they may receive you into
everlasting habitations.
I tell you, use worldly wealth to make friends for
yourselves, so that when it is gone, they will
welcome you into eternal dwellings.
And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one
tittle of the law to
fail.
But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for a single stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.
Who shall not receive
manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life
everlasting.
will fail to receive many times more in this age—and in the age to come, eternal life.”
Men’s hearts
failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be
shaken.
Men will
faint from fear and
anxiety over what is coming upon the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be
shaken.
But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith
fail not: and when thou art converted,
strengthen thy brethren.
But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith will not
fail. And when you have turned back,
strengthen your brothers.”
And now I say unto you,
Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to
nought:
So in the present case I
advise you: Leave these men alone. Let them go! For if their purpose or
endeavor is of human origin, it will
fail.
Which of the prophets have not your fathers
persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:
Which of the prophets did your fathers
fail to
persecute? They even killed those who
foretold the coming of the Righteous One. And now you are His betrayers and murderers—
Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:
It is not as though God’s word has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.
What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded
What then? What Israel was seeking, it
failed to obtain, but the
elect did. The others were
hardened,
Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their
fulness?
But if their
trespass means riches for the world, and their
failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their fullness bring!
Charity never
faileth: but whether there be
prophecies, they shall
fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall
vanish away.
Love never
fails. But where there are
prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be restrained; where there is knowledge, it will be dismissed.
Examine
yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own
selves. Know ye not your own
selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
Examine
yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test
yourselves. Can’t you see for
yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you—unless you actually
fail the test?
But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates.
And I hope you will
realize that we have not
failed the test.
Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we should appear approved, but that ye should do that which is
honest, though we be as reprobates.
Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not that we will appear to have stood the test, but that you will do what is right, even if we appear to have failed.
And as a
vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not
fail.
You will roll them up like a
robe; like a garment they will be changed; but You remain the same, and Your years will never end.”
And what shall I more say? for the time would
fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of
Barak, and of
Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:
And what more shall I say? Time will not allow me to tell of
Gideon,
Barak,
Samson,
Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets,
Looking
diligently lest any man
fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be
defiled;
See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God, and that no root of bitterness springs up to cause trouble and
defile many.
Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
Anyone, then, who knows the right thing to do, yet
fails to do it, is guilty of sin.
Embrace thy children until I come and
shew mercy unto them: for my wells run over, and my grace shall not
fail.
For when I came thither, and had seen
impieties without number, then my soul saw many evildoers in this
thirtieth year, so that my heart
failed me.
And she shall answer thee, They that be born in the strength of youth are of one fashion, and they that are born in the time of age, when the
womb faileth, are otherwise.
But whereas she said unto thee, That my son coming into his marriage chamber happened to have a fail, and died: this was the destruction that came to Jerusalem.
That after the time of that kingdom there shall arise great strivings, and it shall stand in
peril of
failing: nevertheless it shall not then fall, but shall be restored again to his beginning.
And
whensoever the voice went out of his mouth, all they burned that heard his voice, like as the earth
faileth when it feeleth the fire.
They that till the ground shall
mourn: for their seeds shall
fail through the blasting and
hail, and with a fearful
constellation.
Then the children of Israel
cried unto the Lord their God, because their heart
failed, for all their enemies had compassed them round about, and there was no way to escape out from among them.
Thus all the company of Assur remained about them, both their
footmen,
chariots, and
horsemen, four and thirty days, so that all their vessels of water
failed all the inhibitants of Bethulia.
And if thou
wilt follow the words of thine
handmaid, God will bring the thing perfectly to pass by thee; and my lord shall not
fail of his purposes.
For their
victuals fail them, and all their water is
scant, and they have determined to lay hands upon their cattle, and purposed to
consume all those things, that God hath forbidden them to eat by his laws:
Then Holofernes said unto her, If thy provision should fail, how should we give thee the like? for there be none with us of thy nation.
