And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher:
From there they marched against the inhabitants of Debir (formerly known as Kiriath-sepher).
And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her
ass; and
Caleb said unto her, What
wilt thou?
One day Acsah came to Othniel and urged him to ask her father
for a field. When she got off her
donkey,
Caleb asked her, “What do you desire?”
And she said unto him, Give me a blessing:
for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And
Caleb gave her the upper springs and the
nether springs.
“Give me a blessing,” she answered. “Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me springs of water as well.” So
Caleb gave her both the upper and lower springs.
And the house of Joseph sent to
descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was
Luz.)
And the
spies saw a man come
forth out of the city, and they said unto him,
Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will
shew thee mercy.
and when the
spies saw a man coming out of the city, they said to him, “Please show us how to get into the city, and we will treat you kindly.”
Neither did
Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of
Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of
Megiddo and her towns: but the
Canaanites would dwell in that land.
At that time
Manasseh failed to drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean, Taanach,
Dor, Ibleam,
Megiddo, and their villages;
for the
Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land.
And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the
Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.
When Israel became stronger, they pressed the
Canaanites into
forced labor, but they never drove them out completely.
Neither did
Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the
Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.
Zebulun failed to drive out the inhabitants of Kitron and Nahalol; so the
Canaanites lived among them and served as
forced laborers.
But the Asherites dwelt among the
Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land:
for they did not drive them out.
So the Asherites lived among the
Canaanite inhabitants of the land, because they did not drive them out.
Neither did
Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the
Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became tributaries unto them.
Naphtali failed to drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath. So the Naphtalites also lived among the
Canaanite inhabitants of the land, but the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath served them as
forced laborers.
And the
Amorites forced the children of
Dan into the mountain:
for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:
The
Amorites forced the Danites into the hill country and did not allow them to come down into the plain.
But the
Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in
Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.
And the
Amorites were determined to dwell in Mount Heres,
Aijalon, and Shaalbim. But when the house of Joseph grew in strength, they pressed the
Amorites into
forced labor.
And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel.
And the people served the LORD throughout the days of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him, who had seen all the great works that the LORD had done for Israel.
And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.
After that whole generation had also been gathered to their fathers, another generation rose up who did not know the LORD or the works that He had done for Israel.
And they
forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and
provoked the LORD to anger.
Thus they
forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they followed after various gods of the peoples around them. They bowed down to them and
provoked the LORD to anger,
for they
forsook Him and served
Baal and the Ashtoreths.
Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them
for evil, as the LORD had said, and as the LORD had
sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.
Wherever Israel marched out, the hand of the LORD was against them to bring
calamity, just as He had
sworn to them. So they were greatly distressed.
And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge:
for it
repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that
oppressed them and
vexed them.
Whenever the LORD raised up a judge
for the Israelites, He was with that judge and saved them from the hands of their enemies while the judge was still alive;
for the LORD was moved to
pity by their
groaning under those who
oppressed them and
afflicted them.
And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath
transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not
hearkened unto my voice;
So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He said, “Because this nation has
transgressed the covenant I laid down
for their fathers and has not
heeded My voice,
Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;
if only to teach warfare to the subsequent generations of Israel, especially to those who had not known it formerly:
And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and
forgat the LORD their God, and served
Baalim and the groves.
So the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD; they
forgot the LORD their God and served the Baals and the Asherahs.
And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
So the land had rest for forty years, until Othniel son of Kenaz died.
And he gathered unto him the children of
Ammon and Amalek, and went and
smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.
But he himself turned again from the
quarries that were by
Gilgal, and said, I have a secret
errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.
But upon reaching the idols near
Gilgal, he himself turned back and said, “I have a secret message
for you, O king.” “Silence,” said the king, and all his attendants left him.
And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.
Then Ehud approached him while he was sitting alone in the coolness of his upper room. “I have a word from God for you,” Ehud said, and the king rose from his seat.
And Ehud put
forth his left hand, and took the
dagger from his right
thigh, and thrust it into his
belly:
And Ehud reached with his left hand, pulled the sword from his right
thigh, and
plunged it into
Eglon’s
belly.
Then Ehud went
forth through the
porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.
Then Ehud went out through the
porch, closing and locking the doors of the upper room behind him.
And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.
“Follow me,” he told them, “
for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they followed him down and seized the
fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow
anyone to cross over.
So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest
fourscore years.
So Moab was subdued under the hand of Israel that day, and the land had rest for eighty years.
And the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of
Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, which dwelt in
Harosheth of the Gentiles.
So the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of
Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The commander of his
forces was Sisera, who lived in
Harosheth-hagoyim.
And the children of Israel
cried unto the LORD:
for he had nine hundred
chariots of iron; and twenty years he
mightily oppressed the children of Israel.
Then the Israelites
cried out to the LORD, because Jabin had nine hundred
chariots of iron, and he had harshly
oppressed the Israelites
for twenty years.
And she dwelt under the palm tree of
Deborah between
Ramah and
Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her
for judgment.
And she would sit under the Palm of
Deborah between
Ramah and
Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, where the Israelites would go up to her
for judgment.
And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be
for thine honour;
for the LORD shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And
Deborah arose, and went with
Barak to Kedesh.
“I will certainly go with you,”
Deborah replied, “but the road you are taking will bring you no honor, because the LORD will be selling Sisera into the hand of a woman.” So
Deborah got up and went with
Barak to Kedesh,
And
Deborah said unto
Barak, Up;
for this is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the LORD gone out before thee? So
Barak went down from mount
Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.
Then
Deborah said to
Barak, “Arise,
for this is the day that the LORD has delivered Sisera into your hand. Has not the LORD gone before you?” So
Barak came down from Mount
Tabor with ten thousand men following him.
Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of
Heber the Kenite:
for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of
Heber the Kenite.
Meanwhile, Sisera had fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of
Heber the Kenite, because there was peace between Jabin king of Hazor and the house of
Heber the Kenite.
And he said unto her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water to drink;
for I am
thirsty. And she opened a
bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him.
Sisera said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink,
for I am
thirsty.” So she opened a container of milk, gave him a drink, and covered him again.
Then Jael
Heber’s wife took a
nail of the tent, and took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and
smote the
nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground:
for he was fast
asleep and
weary. So he died.
But as he lay sleeping from
exhaustion,
Heber’s wife Jael took a tent
peg,
grabbed a hammer, and went silently to Sisera. She drove the
peg through his temple and into the ground, and he died.
Praise ye the LORD
for the
avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves.
“When the princes take the lead in Israel, when the people
volunteer,
bless the LORD.
They chose new gods; then was war in the gates: was there a shield or
spear seen among
forty thousand in Israel?
When they chose new gods, then war came to their gates. Not a shield or
spear was found among
forty thousand in Israel.
And the princes of
Issachar were with
Deborah; even
Issachar, and also
Barak: he was sent on foot into the valley.
For the divisions of
Reuben there were great thoughts of heart.
Why abodest thou among the sheepfolds, to hear the bleatings of the flocks?
For the divisions of
Reuben there were great searchings of heart.
Why did you sit among the sheepfolds to hear the
whistling for the flocks? In the clans of
Reuben there was great indecision.
Curse ye
Meroz, said the angel of the LORD,
curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof; because they came not to the help of the LORD, to the help of the LORD against the mighty.
‘
Curse Meroz,’ says the angel of the LORD. ‘Bitterly
curse her inhabitants;
for they did not come to help the LORD, to help the LORD against the mighty.’
He asked water, and she gave him milk; she brought
forth butter in a lordly
dish.
He asked
for water, and she gave him milk. In a magnificent
bowl she brought him curds.
She put her hand to the
nail, and her right hand to the workmen’s hammer; and with the hammer she
smote Sisera, she
smote off his head, when she had pierced and
stricken through his temples.
She reached
for the tent
peg, her right hand
for the
workman’s hammer. She struck Sisera and
crushed his skull; she
shattered and pierced his temple.
So let all thine enemies perish, O LORD: but let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.
So may all Your enemies perish, O LORD! But may those who love You
shine like the sun at its brightest.” And the land had rest
for forty years.
And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of
Midian seven years.
Again the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD; so He delivered them into the hand of
Midian for seven years,
And the hand of
Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.
and the hand of
Midian prevailed against Israel. Because of the Midianites, the Israelites prepared shelters
for themselves in the mountains, caves, and strongholds.
And they
encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto
Gaza, and left no
sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor
ass.
encamping against them as far as
Gaza and destroying the produce of the land. They left Israel with no
sustenance, neither sheep nor oxen nor
donkeys.
For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.
For the Midianites came with their
livestock and their tents like a great
swarm of locusts. They and their camels were innumerable, and they entered the land to
ravage it.
That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you
forth out of the house of
bondage;
He sent them a prophet, who told them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I brought you up out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
And
Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this
befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath
forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.
“Please, my Lord,”
Gideon replied, “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all His wonders of which our fathers told us, saying, ‘Has not the LORD brought us up out of Egypt?’ But now the LORD has
forsaken us and delivered us into the hand of
Midian.”
Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring
forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will
tarry until thou come again.
Please do not depart from this place until I return to You. Let me bring my offering and set it before You.” And the LORD said, “I will stay until you return.”
Then the angel of the LORD put
forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the
unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the
unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight.
Then the angel of the LORD extended the
tip of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the
unleavened bread. And fire
flared from the rock and consumed the meat and the
unleavened bread. Then the angel of the LORD
vanished from his sight.
And when
Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD,
Gideon said,
Alas, O Lord GOD!
for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face.
When
Gideon realized that it was the angel of the LORD, he said, “Oh no, Lord GOD! I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face!”
And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.
But the LORD said to him, “Peace be with you. Do not be afraid, for you will not die.”
And
Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye
plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will
plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him
plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar.
But
Joash said to all who stood against him, “Are you
contending for Baal? Are you trying to save him?
Whoever pleads his case will be put to death by morning! If
Baal is a god, let him
contend for himself with the one who has
torn down his altar.”
And God did so that night:
for it was dry upon the
fleece only, and there was
dew on all the ground.
And that night God did so. Only the
fleece was dry, and
dew covered the ground.
And the LORD said unto
Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many
for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel
vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.
Then the LORD said to
Gideon, “You have too many people
for Me to deliver
Midian into their hands, lest Israel
glorify themselves over Me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’
And the LORD said unto
Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them
for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of
whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.
Then the LORD said to
Gideon, “There are still too many people. Take them down to the water, and I will
sift them
for you there. If I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go. But if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.”
And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand.
That night the LORD said to
Gideon, “Get up and go down against the camp,
for I have delivered it into your hand.
And the Midianites and the
Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers
for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side
for multitude.
Now the Midianites,
Amalekites, and all the other people of the east had settled in the valley like a
swarm of locusts, and their camels were as countless as the sand on the
seashore.
And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of
Gideon the son of
Joash, a man of Israel:
for into his hand hath God delivered
Midian, and all the host.
His friend replied: “This is nothing less than the sword of
Gideon son of
Joash, the
Israelite. God has delivered
Midian and the whole camp into his hand.”
And it was so, when
Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped, and returned into the host of Israel, and said, Arise;
for the LORD hath delivered into your hand the host of
Midian.
When
Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed in worship. He returned to the camp of Israel and said, “Get up,
for the LORD has delivered the camp of
Midian into your hand.”
When I blow with a
trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the
trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of
Gideon.
When I and all who are with me blow our horns, then you are also to blow your horns from all around the camp and
shout, ‘
For the LORD and
for Gideon!’”
And the three companies
blew the
trumpets, and
brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the
trumpets in their right hands to blow
withal: and they
cried, The sword of the LORD, and of
Gideon.
The three companies
blew their horns and
shattered their jars. Holding the torches in their left hands and the horns in their right hands, they
shouted, “A sword
for the LORD and
for Gideon!”
And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you,
loaves of bread unto the people that follow me;
for they be
faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of
Midian.
So
Gideon said to the men of Succoth, “Please give my troops some bread,
for they are exhausted, and I am still pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of
Midian.”
Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.
Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their army of about fifteen thousand men—all that were left of the armies of the people of the east. A hundred and twenty thousand
swordsmen had already fallen.
And
Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and
smote the host:
for the host was secure.
And
Gideon went up by way of the
caravan route east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and he attacked their army, taking them by surprise.
And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and enquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even
threescore and seventeen men.
There he captured a young man of Succoth and
interrogated him. The young man wrote down
for him the names of the seventy-seven leaders and elders of Succoth.
And he said unto Jether his
firstborn, Up, and
slay them. But the youth drew not his sword:
for he feared, because he was yet a youth.
So he said to Jether, his
firstborn, “Get up and kill them.” But the young man did not draw his sword; he was fearful because he was still a youth.
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us:
for as the man is, so is his strength. And
Gideon arose, and
slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels’ necks.
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Get up and kill us
yourself,
for as the man is, so is his strength.” So
Gideon got up and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and he took the
crescent ornaments from the necks of their camels.
Then the men of Israel said unto
Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also:
for thou hast delivered us from the hand of
Midian.
Then the Israelites said to
Gideon, “Rule over us—you and your son and grandson—
for you have saved us from the hand of
Midian.”
And
Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (
For they had golden earrings, because they were
Ishmaelites.)
Then he added, “Let me make a request of you, that each of you give me an
earring from his
plunder.” (
For the enemies had gold earrings because they were
Ishmaelites.)
Thus was
Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness
forty years in the days of
Gideon.
In this way
Midian was subdued before the Israelites and did not raise its head again. So the land had rest
for forty years in the days of
Gideon,
Gideon had seventy sons of his own, since he had many wives.
Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely,
Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.
They did not show kindness to the house of Jerubbaal (that is,
Gideon)
for all the good things he had done
for Israel.
Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of
Shechem, Whether is better
for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are
threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.
“Please ask all the leaders of
Shechem, ‘Is it better
for you that seventy men, all the sons of Jerubbaal, rule over you, or just one man?’ Remember that I am your own flesh and blood.”
And his mother’s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of
Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow
Abimelech;
for they said, He is our brother.
And when his mother’s brothers spoke all these words about him in the presence of all the leaders of
Shechem, their hearts were inclined to follow
Abimelech,
for they said, “He is our brother.”
And he went unto his father’s house at Ophrah, and
slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being
threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left;
for he
hid himself.
He went to his father’s house in Ophrah, and on one stone murdered his seventy brothers, the sons of Jerubbaal. But Jotham, the youngest son of Jerubbaal, survived, because he
hid himself.
The trees went
forth on a time to
anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us.
One day the trees set out to
anoint a king
for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us.’
But the fig tree said unto them, Should I
forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?
But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I stop giving my sweetness and my good fruit, to hold
sway over the trees?’
(
For my father fought
for you, and
adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand of
Midian:
for my father fought
for you and risked his life to deliver you from the hand of
Midian,
And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there,
for fear of
Abimelech his brother.
Then Jotham ran away, escaping to Beer, and he lived there
for fear of his brother
Abimelech.
When
Abimelech had reigned three years over Israel,
After
Abimelech had reigned over Israel
for three years,
And the men of
Shechem set liers in wait
for him in the top of the mountains, and they
robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told
Abimelech.
And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is
Abimelech, and who is
Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of
Shechem:
for why should we serve him?
Then Gaal son of Ebed said, “Who is
Abimelech, and who is
Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is not Zebul his officer? You are to serve the men of Hamor, the father of
Shechem. Why should we serve
Abimelech?
And he sent messengers unto
Abimelech privily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren be come to
Shechem; and, behold, they
fortify the city against thee.
And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field, and looked, and, behold, the people were come
forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and
smote them.
So he took his men, divided them into three companies, and lay in wait in the fields. When he saw the people coming out of the city, he rose up against them and attacked them.
And
Abimelech, and the company that was with him,
rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and
slew them.
Then
Abimelech and the companies with him
rushed forward and took their stand at the entrance of the city gate. The other two companies
rushed against all who were in the fields and struck them down.
And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD, and served
Baalim, and
Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Zidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of
Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines, and
forsook the LORD, and served not him.
And again the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD. They served the Baals, the Ashtoreths, the gods of
Aram,
Sidon, and Moab, and the gods of the
Ammonites and Philistines. Thus they
forsook the LORD and did not serve Him.
And that year they
vexed and
oppressed the children of Israel: eighteen years, all the children of Israel that were on the other side Jordan in the land of the
Amorites, which is in
Gilead.
who that very year
harassed and
oppressed the Israelites, and did so
for eighteen years to all the Israelites on the other side of the Jordan in
Gilead, the land of the
Amorites.
And the children of Israel
cried unto the LORD, saying, We have
sinned against thee, both because we have
forsaken our God, and also served
Baalim.
Then the Israelites
cried out to the LORD, saying, “We have
sinned against You,
for we have indeed
forsaken our God and served the Baals.”
Yet ye have
forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.
But you have
forsaken Me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you.
And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD: and his soul was
grieved for the misery of Israel.
So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the LORD, and He could no longer bear the misery of Israel.
And
Gilead’s wife bare him sons; and his wife’s sons grew up, and they thrust out
Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not
