Go and speak to Ebed-melech the
Ethiopian, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring my words upon this city
for evil, and not
for good; and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee.
“Go and tell Ebed-melech the
Cushite that this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘I am about to
fulfill My words against this city
for harm and not
for good, and on that day they will be fulfilled before your eyes.
For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee: because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the LORD.
For I will surely
rescue you so that you do not fall by the sword. Because you have trusted in Me, you will escape with your life like a
spoil of war, declares the LORD.’”
And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains which were upon thine hand. If it seem good unto thee to come with me into Babylon, come; and I will look well unto thee: but if it seem ill unto thee to come with me into Babylon,
forbear: behold, all the land is before thee:
whither it seemeth good and convenient
for thee to go, thither go.
But now, behold, I am freeing you
today from the chains that were on your wrists. If it pleases you to come with me to Babylon, then come, and I will take care of you. But if it seems wrong to you to come with me to Babylon, go no farther. Look, the whole land is before you. Wherever it seems good and right to you, go there.”
Now when all the captains of the
forces which were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poor of the land, of them that were not carried away
captive to Babylon;
When all the commanders and men of the armies in the field heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of
Ahikam over the land and that he had put him in charge of the men, women, and children who were the poorest of the land and had not been exiled to Babylon,
As
for me, behold, I will dwell at
Mizpah to serve the Chaldeans, which will come unto us: but ye, gather ye wine, and summer fruits, and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that ye have taken.
As
for me, I will stay in
Mizpah to represent you before the Chaldeans who come to us. As
for you, gather wine grapes, summer fruit, and oil, place them in your
storage jars, and live in the cities you have taken.”
Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the
forces that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah to
Mizpah,
Meanwhile, Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies in the field came to Gedaliah at
Mizpah But Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah, Thou shalt not do this thing:
for thou speakest falsely of
Ishmael.
But Gedaliah son of
Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah, “Do not do such a thing! What you are saying about
Ishmael is a lie.”
That there came certain from
Shechem, from
Shiloh, and from Samaria, even
fourscore men, having their beards
shaven, and their clothes rent, and having cut themselves, with offerings and incense in their hand, to bring them to the house of the LORD.
eighty men who had
shaved off their beards,
torn their garments, and cut themselves came from
Shechem,
Shiloh, and Samaria, carrying grain offerings and
frankincense for the house of the LORD.
And
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went
forth from
Mizpah to meet them,
weeping all along as he went: and it came to pass, as he met them, he said unto them, Come to Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam.
But ten men were found among them that said unto
Ishmael,
Slay us not:
for we have treasures in the field, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey. So he
forbare, and
slew them not among their brethren.
But ten of the men among them said to
Ishmael, “Do not kill us,
for we have hidden
treasure in the field—wheat, barley, oil, and honey!” So he
refrained from killing them with the others.
Now the pit wherein
Ishmael had cast all the dead bodies of the men, whom he had slain because of Gedaliah, was it which
Asa the king had made
for fear of
Baasha king of Israel: and
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with them that were slain.
Now the
cistern into which
Ishmael had thrown all the bodies of the men he had struck down along with Gedaliah was a large one that King
Asa had made
for fear of
Baasha king of Israel.
Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain.
But when Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the
forces that were with him, heard of all the evil that
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done,
When Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies with him heard of all the crimes that
Ishmael son of Nethaniah had committed,
Now it came to pass, that when all the people which were with
Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the
forces that were with him, then they were
glad.
When all the people with
Ishmael saw Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the army with him, they
rejoiced,
Then took Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the
forces that were with him, all the
remnant of the people whom he had recovered from
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, from
Mizpah, after that he had slain Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam, even mighty men of war, and the women, and the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought again from
Gibeon:
Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies with him took the whole
remnant of the people from
Mizpah whom he had recovered from
Ishmael son of Nethaniah after
Ishmael had killed Gedaliah son of
Ahikam: the soldiers, women, children, and court officials he had brought back from
Gibeon.
Because of the Chaldeans:
for they were afraid of them, because
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had slain Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon made governor in the land.
to escape the Chaldeans.
For they were afraid of the Chaldeans because
Ishmael son of Nethaniah had struck down Gedaliah son of
Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed over the land.
Then all the captains of the forces, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least even unto the greatest, came near,
Then all the commanders of the forces, along with Johanan son of Kareah, Jezaniah son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest, approached
And said unto Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we
beseech thee, our
supplication be accepted before thee, and pray
for us unto the LORD thy God, even
for all this
remnant; (
for we are left but a few of many, as thine eyes do behold us:)
Jeremiah the prophet and said, “May our petition come before you; pray to the LORD your God on behalf of this entire
remnant.
For few of us remain of the many, as you can see with your own eyes.
Then they said to Jeremiah, The LORD be a true and faithful witness between us, if we do not even according to all things for the which the LORD thy God shall send thee to us.
Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the LORD be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act upon every word that the LORD your God sends you to tell us.
Whether it be good, or whether it be evil, we will obey the voice of the LORD our God, to whom we send thee; that it may be well with us, when we obey the voice of the LORD our God.
Whether it is pleasant or unpleasant, we will obey the voice of the LORD our God to whom we are sending you, so that it may go well with us, for we will obey the voice of the LORD our God!”
Then called he Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces which were with him, and all the people from the least even to the greatest,
and he summoned Johanan son of Kareah, all the commanders of the forces who were with him, and all the people from the least to the greatest.
If ye will still
abide in this land, then will I build you, and not pull you down, and I will plant you, and not
pluck you up:
for I
repent me of the evil that I have done unto you.
‘If you will indeed stay in this land, then I will build you up and not
tear you down; I will plant you and not
uproot you,
for I will relent of the
disaster I have brought upon you.
Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid; be not afraid of him, saith the LORD: for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand.
Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, whom you now fear; do not be afraid of him, declares the LORD, for I am with you to save you and deliver you from him.
Saying, No; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the
trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there will we dwell:
and if you say, ‘No, but we will go to the land of Egypt and live there, where we will not see war or hear the sound of the ram’s horn or hunger for bread,’
For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; As mine anger and my
fury hath been poured
forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem; so shall my
fury be poured
forth upon you, when ye shall enter into Egypt: and ye shall be an
execration, and an
astonishment, and a
curse, and a reproach; and ye shall see this place no more.
For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Just as My anger and wrath were poured out on the residents of Jerusalem, so will My wrath be poured out on you if you go to Egypt. You will become an object of
cursing and
horror, of
vilification and disgrace, and you will never see this place again.’
The LORD hath said concerning you, O ye
remnant of Judah; Go ye not into Egypt: know certainly that I have
admonished you this day.
The LORD has told you, O
remnant of Judah, ‘Do not go to Egypt.’ Know
for sure that I have
warned you
today!
For ye
dissembled in your hearts, when ye sent me unto the LORD your God, saying, Pray
for us unto the LORD our God; and according unto all that the LORD our God shall say, so declare unto us, and we will do it.
For you have
deceived yourselves by sending me to the LORD your God, saying, ‘Pray to the LORD our God on our behalf, and as
for all that the LORD our God says, tell it to us and we will do it.’
And now I have this day declared it to you; but ye have not obeyed the voice of the LORD your God, nor any thing for the which he hath sent me unto you.
For I have told you
today, but you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD your God in all He has sent me to tell you.
Now therefore know certainly that ye shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the
pestilence, in the place
whither ye desire to go and to
sojourn.
Now therefore, know for sure that by sword and famine and plague you will die in the place where you desire to go to reside.”
And it came to pass, that when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking unto all the people all the words of the LORD their God, for which the LORD their God had sent him to them, even all these words,
When Jeremiah had finished telling all the people all the words of the LORD their God—everything that the LORD had sent him to say—
But
Baruch the son of Neriah setteth thee on against us,
for to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they might put us to death, and carry us away
captives into Babylon.
Rather,
Baruch son of Neriah is
inciting you against us to deliver us into the hands of the Chaldeans, so that they may put us to death or exile us to Babylon!”
So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, and all the people, obeyed not the voice of the LORD, to dwell in the land of Judah.
So Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces disobeyed the command of the LORD to stay in the land of Judah.
But Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the
forces, took all the
remnant of Judah, that were returned from all nations,
whither they had been driven, to dwell in the land of Judah;
Instead, Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the
forces took the whole
remnant of Judah, those who had returned to the land of Judah from all the nations to which they had been scattered,
So they came into the land of Egypt: for they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: thus came they even to Tahpanhes.
So they entered the land of Egypt because they did not obey the voice of the LORD, and they went as far as Tahpanhes.
And say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will set his throne upon these stones that I have
hid; and he shall spread his royal
pavilion over them.
Then tell them that this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘I will send
for My servant
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and I will set his throne over these stones that I have
embedded, and he will spread his royal
pavilion over them.
And when he cometh, he shall
smite the land of Egypt, and deliver such as are
for death to death; and such as are
for captivity to captivity; and such as are
for the sword to the sword.
He will come and strike down the land of Egypt, bringing death to those destined for death, captivity to those destined for captivity, and the sword to those destined for the sword.
And I will
kindle a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt; and he shall burn them, and carry them away
captives: and he shall
array himself with the land of Egypt, as a
shepherd putteth on his garment; and he shall go
forth from thence in peace.
I will
kindle a fire in the temples of the gods of Egypt, and
Nebuchadnezzar will burn those temples and take their gods as
captives. So he will
wrap himself with the land of Egypt as a
shepherd wraps himself in his garment, and he will depart from there unscathed.
Wherefore my
fury and mine anger was poured
forth, and was
kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they are wasted and
desolate, as at this day.
Therefore My wrath and anger poured out and burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, so that they have become the
desolate ruin they are
today.
Have ye forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, and the wickedness of the kings of Judah, and the wickedness of their wives, and your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives, which they have committed in the land of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem?
Have you forgotten the wickedness of your fathers and of the kings of Judah and their wives, as well as the wickedness that you and your wives committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?
Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will set my face against you for evil, and to cut off all Judah.
Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: I will set My face to bring
disaster and to cut off all Judah.
For I will
punish them that dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, by the sword, by the famine, and by the
pestilence:
I will
punish those who live in the land of Egypt, just as I punished Jerusalem, by sword and famine and plague,
So that none of the
remnant of Judah, which are gone into the land of Egypt to
sojourn there, shall escape or remain, that they should return into the land of Judah, to the which they have a desire to return to dwell there:
for none shall return but such as shall escape.
so that none of the
remnant of Judah who have gone to reside in Egypt will escape or
survive to return to the land of Judah, where they long to return and live;
for none will return except a few fugitives.”
As
for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the LORD, we will not
hearken unto thee.
“As
for the word you have spoken to us in the name of the LORD, we will not
listen to you!
But we will certainly do
whatsoever thing goeth
forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem:
for then had we
plenty of
victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.
Instead, we will do everything we
vowed to do: We will burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and offer drink offerings to her, just as we, our fathers, our kings, and our officials did in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. At that time we had
plenty of food and good things, and we saw no
disaster.
The incense that ye burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, ye, and your fathers, your kings, and your princes, and the people of the land, did not the LORD remember them, and came it not into his mind?
“As for the incense you burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem—you, your fathers, your kings, your officials, and the people of the land—did the LORD not remember and bring this to mind?
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying; Ye and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and fulfilled with your hand, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have
vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her: ye will surely
accomplish your vows, and surely perform your vows.
This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: As
for you and your wives, you have spoken with your mouths and fulfilled with your hands your words: ‘We will surely perform our vows that we have made to burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and to pour out drink offerings to her.’ Go
ahead, then, do what you have promised! Keep your vows!
Behold, I will watch over them for evil, and not for good: and all the men of Judah that are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until there be an end of them.
I am watching over them
for harm and not
for good, and every man of Judah who is in the land of Egypt will meet his end by sword or famine, until they are finished off.
And this shall be a sign unto you, saith the LORD, that I will
punish you in this place, that ye may know that my words shall surely stand against you
for evil:
This will be a sign to you that I will
punish you in this place, declares the LORD, so that you may know that My threats of
harm against you will surely stand.
Thou
didst say,
Woe is me now!
for the LORD hath added grief to my sorrow; I
fainted in my
sighing, and I find no rest.
You have said, ‘
Woe is me because the LORD has added sorrow to my pain! I am worn out with
groaning and have found no rest.’”
And seekest thou great things
for thyself? seek them not:
for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the LORD: but thy life will I give unto thee
for a prey in all places
whither thou goest.
But as
for you, do you seek great things
for yourself? Stop seeking!
For I will bring
disaster on every living creature, declares the LORD, but wherever you go, I will grant your life as a
spoil of war.”
Order ye the
buckler and shield, and draw near to battle.
“
Deploy your shields, small and large; advance
for battle!
Harness the horses; and get up, ye
horsemen, and stand
forth with your helmets;
furbish the spears, and put on the brigandines.
Harness the horses; mount the steeds; take your positions with helmets on! Polish your spears; put on
armor!
Wherefore have I seen them dismayed and turned away back? and their mighty ones are beaten down, and are fled
apace, and look not back:
for fear was round about, saith the LORD.
Why am I seeing this? They are
terrified, they are retreating; their warriors are defeated, they
flee in
haste without looking back; terror is on every side!” declares the LORD.
Come up, ye horses; and
rage, ye
chariots; and let the mighty men come
forth; the Ethiopians and the Libyans, that handle the shield; and the Lydians, that handle and bend the bow.
Advance, O horses! Race
furiously, O
chariots! Let the warriors come
forth—
Cush and Put carrying their shields, men of
Lydia drawing the bow.
For this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of
vengeance, that he may
avenge him of his
adversaries: and the sword shall
devour, and it shall be
satiate and made
drunk with their blood:
for the Lord GOD of hosts hath a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.
For that day belongs to the Lord GOD of Hosts, a day of
vengeance against His foes. The sword will
devour until it is satisfied, until it is
quenched with their blood.
For the Lord GOD of Hosts will hold a sacrifice in the land of the north by the River Euphrates.
Go up into
Gilead, and take
balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt: in vain shalt thou use many medicines;
for thou shalt not be cured.
The nations have heard of thy shame, and thy cry hath filled the land:
for the mighty man hath
stumbled against the mighty, and they are fallen both together.
The nations have heard of your shame, and your outcry fills the earth, because
warrior stumbles over
warrior and both of them have fallen together.”
Declare ye in Egypt, and
publish in
Migdol, and
publish in
Noph and in Tahpanhes: say ye, Stand fast, and prepare thee;
for the sword shall
devour round about thee.
Why are thy
valiant men swept away? they stood not, because the LORD did drive them.
Why have your warriors been laid low? They cannot stand, for the LORD has thrust them down.
O thou daughter dwelling in Egypt, furnish
thyself to go into captivity:
for Noph shall be waste and
desolate without an inhabitant.
Pack your bags
for exile, O daughter dwelling in Egypt!
For Memphis will be laid waste, destroyed and uninhabited.
Also her
hired men are in the midst of her like
fatted bullocks;
for they also are turned back, and are fled away together: they did not stand, because the day of their
calamity was come upon them, and the time of their
visitation.
Even the
mercenaries among her are like
fattened calves. They too will turn back; together they will
flee, they will not stand their ground,
for the day of
calamity is coming upon them— the time of their punishment.
The voice thereof shall go like a serpent; for they shall march with an army, and come against her with axes, as hewers of wood.
Egypt will hiss like a
fleeing serpent,
for the enemy will advance in
force; with axes they will come against her like
woodsmen cutting down trees.
They shall cut down her forest, saith the LORD, though it cannot be searched; because they are more than the grasshoppers, and are innumerable.
They will
chop down her
forest, declares the LORD, dense though it may be,
for they are more numerous than locusts; they cannot be counted.
But fear not thou, O my servant Jacob, and be not dismayed, O Israel:
for, behold, I will save thee from
afar off, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and be in rest and at ease, and none shall make him afraid.
But you, O Jacob My servant, do not be afraid, and do not be dismayed, O Israel. For I will surely save you out of a distant place, your descendants from the land of their captivity! Jacob will return to quiet and ease, with no one to make him afraid.
Fear thou not, O Jacob my servant, saith the LORD:
for I am with thee;
for I will make a full end of all the nations
whither I have driven thee: but I will not make a full end of thee, but correct thee in measure; yet will I not leave thee wholly unpunished.
And you, My servant Jacob, do not be afraid, declares the LORD, for I am with you. Though I will completely destroy all the nations to which I have banished you, I will not completely destroy you. Yet I will discipline you justly, and will by no means leave you unpunished.”
At the noise of the stamping of the
hoofs of his strong horses, at the
rushing of his
chariots, and at the
rumbling of his wheels, the fathers shall not look back to their children
for feebleness of hands;
Because of the day that cometh to
spoil all the Philistines, and to cut off from Tyrus and Zidon every helper that remaineth:
for the LORD will
spoil the Philistines, the
remnant of the country of Caphtor.
For the day has come to destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and
Sidon every remaining ally. Indeed, the LORD is about to destroy the Philistines, the
remnant from the coasts of Caphtor.
Against Moab thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel;
Woe unto
Nebo!
for it is
spoiled: Kiriathaim is confounded and taken: Misgab is confounded and dismayed.
Concerning Moab, this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “
Woe to
Nebo,
for it will be
devastated. Kiriathaim will be captured and disgraced; the
fortress will be
shattered and
dismantled.
There shall be no more praise of Moab: in
Heshbon they have devised evil against it; come, and let us cut it off from being a nation. Also thou shalt be cut down, O
Madmen; the sword shall pursue thee.
There is no longer praise
for Moab; in
Heshbon they
devise evil against her: ‘Come, let us cut her off from nationhood.’ You too, O people of
Madmen, will be silenced; the sword will pursue you.
For in the going up of Luhith continual
weeping shall go up;
for in the going down of Horonaim the enemies have heard a cry of destruction.
For on the
ascent to Luhith they
weep bitterly as they go, and on the descent to Horonaim
cries of distress resound over the destruction:
Flee, save your lives, and be like the
heath in the wilderness.
‘
Flee! Run
for your lives! Become like a
juniper in the desert.’
For because thou hast trusted in thy works and in thy treasures, thou shalt also be taken: and
Chemosh shall go
forth into captivity with his priests and his princes together.
Because you trust in your works and treasures, you too will be captured, and
Chemosh will go into exile with his priests and officials.
Give wings unto Moab, that it may
flee and get away:
for the cities thereof shall be
desolate, without any to dwell therein.
Put salt on Moab,
for she will be laid waste; her cities will become
desolate, with no one to dwell in them.
How say ye, We are mighty and strong men for the war?
How can you say, ‘We are warriors, mighty men ready for battle’?
All ye that are about him,
bemoan him; and all ye that know his name, say, How is the strong staff broken, and the beautiful rod!
Thou daughter that
dost inhabit Dibon, come down from thy glory, and sit in
thirst;
for the
spoiler of Moab shall come upon thee, and he shall destroy thy strong holds.
Come down from your glory; sit on
parched ground, O daughter dwelling in Dibon,
for the destroyer of Moab has come against you; he has destroyed your
fortresses.
Moab is confounded;
for it is broken down:
howl and cry; and tell ye it in
Arnon, that Moab is
spoiled,
Moab is put to shame,
for it has been
shattered.
Wail and cry out! Declare by the
Arnon that Moab is destroyed.
For was not Israel a
derision unto thee? was he found among
thieves?
for since thou spakest of him, thou skippedst
for joy.
Was not Israel your object of
ridicule? Was he ever found among
thieves?
For whenever you speak of him you
shake your head.
Therefore will I
howl for Moab, and I will cry out
for all Moab; mine heart shall
mourn for the men of Kir-heres.
Therefore I will
wail for Moab; I will cry out
for all of Moab; I will
moan for the men of Kir-heres.
O vine of Sibmah, I will
weep for thee with the
weeping of Jazer: thy plants are gone over the sea, they reach even to the sea of Jazer: the
spoiler is fallen upon thy summer fruits and upon thy
vintage.
I will
weep for you, O vine of Sibmah, more than I
weep for Jazer. Your tendrils have extended to the sea; they reach even to Jazer. The destroyer has descended on your summer fruit and
grape harvest.
Joy and
gladness are removed from the
orchard and from the fields of Moab. I have stopped the flow of wine from the presses; no one treads them with shouts of joy; their shouts are not
for joy.
From the cry of
Heshbon even unto Elealeh, and even unto Jahaz, have they uttered their voice, from Zoar even unto Horonaim, as an
heifer of three years old:
for the waters also of Nimrim shall be
desolate.
There is a cry from
Heshbon to Elealeh; they raise their voices to Jahaz, from Zoar to Horonaim and Eglath-shelishiyah;
for even the waters of Nimrim have dried up.
Therefore mine heart shall sound
for Moab like pipes, and mine heart shall sound like pipes
for the men of Kir-heres: because the riches that he hath
gotten are perished.
Therefore My heart laments like a
flute for Moab; it laments like a
flute for the men of Kir-heres, because the wealth they acquired has perished.
There shall be
lamentation generally upon all the housetops of Moab, and in the streets thereof:
for I have broken Moab like a vessel wherein is no pleasure, saith the LORD.
On all the rooftops of Moab and in the public squares,
everyone is
mourning;
for I have
shattered Moab like an unwanted
jar,” declares the LORD.
For thus saith the LORD; Behold, he shall fly as an eagle, and shall spread his wings over Moab.
For this is what the LORD says: “Behold, an eagle swoops down and spreads his wings against Moab.
He that fleeth from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that getteth up out of the pit shall be taken in the
snare:
for I will bring upon it, even upon Moab, the year of their
visitation, saith the LORD.
“
Whoever flees the
panic will fall into the pit, and
whoever climbs from the pit will be caught in the
snare.
For I will bring upon Moab the year of their punishment,” declares the LORD.
They that fled stood under the shadow of
Heshbon because of the
force: but a fire shall come
forth out of
Heshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sihon, and shall
devour the corner of Moab, and the crown of the head of the
tumultuous ones.
“Those who
flee will stand helpless in
Heshbon’s shadow, because fire has gone
forth from
Heshbon and a flame from within Sihon. It devours the
foreheads of Moab and the skulls of the sons of
tumult.
Woe to you, O Moab! The people of
Chemosh have perished;
for your sons have been taken into exile and your daughters have gone into captivity.
Howl, O
Heshbon,
for Ai is
spoiled: cry, ye daughters of Rabbah,
gird you with
sackcloth;
lament, and run to and
fro by the hedges;
for their king shall go into captivity, and his priests and his princes together.
Wail, O
Heshbon,
for Ai has been destroyed; cry out, O daughters of Rabbah! Put on
sackcloth and
mourn; run back and
forth within your walls,
for Milcom will go into exile together with his priests and officials.
Behold, I will bring a fear upon thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts, from all those that be about thee; and ye shall be driven out every man right forth; and none shall gather up him that wandereth.
Behold, I am about to bring terror upon you, declares the Lord GOD of Hosts, from all those around you. You will each be driven
headlong, with no one to regather the fugitives.
Flee ye, turn back, dwell deep, O inhabitants of Dedan;
for I will bring the
calamity of
Esau upon him, the time that I will visit him.
Turn and run! Lie low, O dwellers of Dedan,
for I will bring
disaster on
Esau at the time I
punish him.
For thus saith the LORD; Behold, they whose judgment was not to drink of the cup have
assuredly drunken; and art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished? thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink of it.
For this is what the LORD says: “If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, can you possibly remain unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for you must drink it too.
For I have
sworn by myself, saith the LORD, that
Bozrah shall become a
desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a
curse; and all the cities thereof shall be perpetual wastes.
I have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent unto the heathen, saying, Gather ye together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle.
I have heard a message from the LORD; an
envoy has been sent to the nations: “
Assemble yourselves to march against her! Rise up
for battle!”
For, lo, I will make thee small among the heathen, and
despised among men.
“
For behold, I will make you small among nations,
despised among men.
Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan against the
habitation of the strong: but I will suddenly make him run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may
appoint over her?
for who is like me? and who will
appoint me the time? and who is that
shepherd that will stand before me?
Behold, one will come up like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan to the watered pasture.
For in an instant I will
chase Edom from her land. Who is the chosen one I will
appoint for this?
For who is like Me, and who can
challenge Me? What
shepherd can stand against Me?”
Concerning Damascus.
Hamath is confounded, and Arpad:
for they have heard evil
tidings: they are
fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet.
Concerning Damascus: “
Hamath and Arpad are put to shame,
for they have heard a bad report; they are
agitated like the sea; their
anxiety cannot be calmed.
How is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy!
How is the city of praise not
forsaken, the town that brings Me joy?
Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD of hosts.
For her young men will fall in the streets, and all her warriors will be silenced in that day,” declares the LORD of Hosts.
