Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Although I have cast them far off among the heathen, and although I have scattered them among the countries, yet will I be to them as a little sanctuary in the countries where they shall come.
Therefore declare that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Although I sent them far away among the nations and scattered them among the countries, yet for a little while I have been a sanctuary for them in the countries to which they have gone.’
But as
for them whose heart walketh after the heart of their
detestable things and their abominations, I will
recompense their way upon their own heads, saith the Lord GOD.
But as
for those whose hearts pursue
detestable things and abominations, I will bring their conduct down upon their own heads, declares the Lord GOD.”
Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a
rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not:
for they are a
rebellious house.
“Son of man, you are living in a
rebellious house. They have eyes to see but do not see, and ears to hear but do not hear,
for they are a
rebellious house.
Therefore, thou son of man, prepare thee stuff
for removing, and remove by day in their sight; and thou shalt remove from thy place to another place in their sight: it may be they will consider, though they be a
rebellious house.
Therefore, son of man,
pack your bags
for exile. In broad
daylight, set out from your place and go to another as they watch. Perhaps they will understand, though they are a
rebellious house.
Then shalt thou bring forth thy stuff by day in their sight, as stuff for removing: and thou shalt go forth at even in their sight, as they that go forth into captivity.
Bring out your
baggage for exile by day, as they watch. Then in the evening, as they watch, go out like those who go into exile.
In their sight shalt thou bear it upon thy shoulders, and carry it
forth in the
twilight: thou shalt cover thy face, that thou see not the ground:
for I have set thee
for a sign unto the house of Israel.
And as they watch, lift your bags to your shoulder and take them out at
dusk; cover your face so that you cannot see the land.
For I have made you a sign to the house of Israel.”
And I did so as I was commanded: I brought
forth my stuff by day, as stuff
for captivity, and in the even I
digged through the wall with mine hand; I brought it
forth in the
twilight, and I bare it upon my shoulder in their sight.
So I did as I was commanded. I brought out my bags
for exile by day, and in the evening I
dug through the wall by hand. I took my belongings out at
dusk, carrying them on my shoulder as they watched.
And the prince that is among them shall bear upon his shoulder in the
twilight, and shall go
forth: they shall
dig through the wall to carry out thereby: he shall cover his face, that he see not the ground with his eyes.
And at
dusk the prince among them will lift his bags to his shoulder and go out. They will
dig through the wall to bring him out. He will cover his face so he cannot see the land.
And say unto the people of the land, Thus saith the Lord GOD of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and of the land of Israel; They shall eat their bread with carefulness, and drink their water with
astonishment, that her land may be
desolate from all that is therein, because of the violence of all them that dwell therein.
Then tell the people of the land that this is what the Lord GOD says about those living in Jerusalem and in the land of Israel: ‘They will eat their bread with
anxiety and drink their water in
dread,
for their land will be
stripped of everything in it because of the violence of all who dwell in it.
For there will be no more false visions or
flattering divinations within the house of Israel,
For I am the LORD: I will speak, and the word that I shall speak shall come to pass; it shall be no more prolonged:
for in your days, O
rebellious house, will I say the word, and will perform it, saith the Lord GOD.
because I, the LORD, will speak whatever word I speak, and it will be fulfilled without delay.
For in your days, O
rebellious house, I will speak a message and bring it to pass, declares the Lord GOD.’”
Son of man, behold, they of the house of Israel say, The vision that he
seeth is
for many days to come, and he prophesieth of the times that are far off.
“Son of man, take note that the house of Israel is saying, ‘The vision that he sees is for many years from now; he prophesies about the distant future.’
Ye have not gone up into the gaps, neither made up the
hedge for the house of Israel to stand in the battle in the day of the LORD.
You did not go up to the gaps or restore the wall around the house of Israel so that it would stand in the battle on the Day of the LORD.
They have seen vanity and lying
divination, saying, The LORD saith: and the LORD hath not sent them: and they have made others to hope that they would
confirm the word.
They see false visions and speak lying divinations. They claim, ‘Thus declares the LORD,’ when the LORD did not send them; yet they wait
for the
fulfillment of their message.
Say unto them which
daub it with untempered
morter, that it shall fall: there shall be an overflowing shower; and ye, O great hailstones, shall fall; and a
stormy wind shall
rend it.
To wit, the prophets of Israel which
prophesy concerning Jerusalem, and which see visions of peace
for her, and there is no peace, saith the Lord GOD.
those prophets of Israel who
prophesied to Jerusalem and saw a vision of peace
for her when there was no peace, declares the Lord GOD.’
And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD;
Woe to the women that
sew pillows to all armholes, and make
kerchiefs upon the head of every
stature to
hunt souls! Will ye
hunt the souls of my people, and will ye save the souls alive that come unto you?
and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says:
Woe to the women who
sew magic charms on their wrists and make veils
for the heads of people of every height, in order to
ensnare their souls. Will you
ensnare the souls of My people but preserve your own?
And will ye
pollute me among my people
for handfuls of barley and
for pieces of bread, to
slay the souls that should not die, and to save the souls alive that should not live, by your lying to my people that hear your lies?
You have
profaned Me among My people
for handfuls of barley and scraps of bread. By lying to My people who would
listen, you have killed those who should not have died and
spared those who should not have lived.
Therefore ye shall see no more vanity, nor divine divinations: for I will deliver my people out of your hand: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
therefore you will no longer see false visions or practice
divination. I will deliver My people from your hands. Then you will know that I am the LORD.”
That I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all
estranged from me through their idols.
so that I may take hold of the hearts of the people of Israel.
For because of their idols, they are all
estranged from Me.’
For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to
enquire of him concerning me; I the LORD will answer him by myself:
For when any
Israelite or any
foreigner dwelling in Israel separates himself from Me, sets up idols in his heart, and puts a wicked
stumbling block before his face, and then comes to the prophet to inquire of Me, I the LORD will answer him Myself.
If I cause
noisome beasts to pass through the land, and they
spoil it, so that it be
desolate, that no man may pass through because of the beasts:
Or if I send wild beasts through the land to leave it childless and
desolate, with no man passing through it
for fear of the beasts,
For thus saith the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four
sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the
noisome beast, and the
pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?
For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘How much worse will it be when I send against Jerusalem My four
dire judgments—sword, famine, wild beasts, and plague—in order to cut off from it both man and beast?
Yet, behold, therein shall be left a
remnant that shall be brought
forth, both sons and daughters: behold, they shall come
forth unto you, and ye shall see their way and their doings: and ye shall be comforted concerning the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, even concerning all that I have brought upon it.
Yet, behold, some survivors will be left in it—sons and daughters who will be brought out. They will come out to you, and when you see their conduct and actions, you will be comforted regarding the
disaster I have brought upon Jerusalem—all that I have brought upon it.
Son of man, What is the vine tree more than any tree, or than a branch which is among the trees of the forest?
“Son of man, how does the wood of the vine
surpass any other branch among the trees in the
forest?
Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire devoureth both the ends of it, and the midst of it is burned. Is it meet for any work?
No, it is cast into the fire
for fuel. The fire devours both ends, and the middle is
charred. Can it be useful
for anything?
Behold, when it was whole, it was meet
for no work: how much less shall it be meet yet
for any work, when the fire hath
devoured it, and it is burned?
Even when it was whole, it could not be made useful. How much less can it ever be useful when the fire has consumed it and
charred it!
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; As the vine tree among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so will I give the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Like the wood of the vine among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so I will give up the people of Jerusalem.
On the day of your birth your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water
for cleansing. You were not
rubbed with salt or
wrapped in cloths.
None eye
pitied thee, to do any of these unto thee, to have
compassion upon thee; but thou
wast cast out in the open field, to the
lothing of thy person, in the day that thou
wast born.
No one cared enough
for you to do even one of these things out of
compassion for you. Instead, you were thrown out into the open field, because you were
despised on the day of your birth.
I have caused thee to multiply as the
bud of the field, and thou hast increased and
waxen great, and thou art come to excellent ornaments: thy breasts are fashioned, and thine hair is grown, whereas thou
wast naked and bare.
I made you
thrive like a plant of the field. You grew up and
matured and became very beautiful. Your breasts were
formed and your hair grew, but you were naked and bare.
Now when I passed by thee, and looked upon thee, behold, thy time was the time of love; and I spread my
skirt over thee, and covered thy nakedness:
yea, I
sware unto thee, and entered into a covenant with thee, saith the Lord GOD, and thou becamest mine.
Then I passed by and saw you, and you were indeed old enough
for love. So I spread My
cloak over you and covered your nakedness. I
pledged Myself to you, entered into a covenant with you, and you became Mine, declares the Lord GOD.
And I put a
jewel on thy
forehead, and earrings in thine ears, and a beautiful crown upon thine head.
I put a ring in your nose, earrings on your ears, and a beautiful crown upon your head.
And thy
renown went
forth among the heathen
for thy beauty:
for it was perfect through my
comeliness, which I had put upon thee, saith the Lord GOD.
Your fame spread among the nations on account of your beauty,
for it was perfect in the
splendor I bestowed on you, declares the Lord GOD.
But thou
didst trust in thine own beauty, and playedst the
harlot because of thy
renown, and pouredst out thy
fornications on every one that passed by; his it was.
But because of your fame, you trusted in your beauty and played the
harlot. You
lavished your favors on
everyone who passed by, and your beauty was theirs
for the asking.
And of thy garments thou
didst take, and deckedst thy high places with
divers colours, and playedst the
harlot thereupon: the like things shall not come, neither shall it be so.
You took some of your garments and made colorful high places
for yourself, and on them you
prostituted yourself. Such things should not have happened; never should they have occurred!
My meat also which I gave thee, fine flour, and oil, and honey,
wherewith I fed thee, thou hast even set it before them
for a sweet savour: and thus it was, saith the Lord GOD.
And you set before them as a pleasing
aroma the food I had given you—the fine flour, oil, and honey that I had fed you. That is what happened, declares the Lord GOD.
That thou hast slain my children, and delivered them to cause them to pass through the fire for them?
You slaughtered My children and delivered them up through the fire to idols.
Thou hast also committed
fornication with the Egyptians thy neighbours, great of flesh; and hast increased thy whoredoms, to
provoke me to anger.
So you extended your
promiscuity to
Chaldea, the land of merchants—but even with this you were not satisfied!
They give gifts to all whores: but thou givest thy gifts to all thy lovers, and hirest them, that they may come unto thee on every side
for thy
whoredom.
Men give gifts to all their prostitutes, but you gave gifts to all your lovers. You
bribed them to come to you from everywhere
for your
illicit favors.
Thou also, which hast judged thy sisters, bear thine own shame
for thy sins that thou hast committed more
abominable than they: they are more righteous than thou:
yea, be thou confounded also, and bear thy shame, in that thou hast justified thy sisters.
So now you must bear your disgrace, since you have brought
justification for your sisters.
For they appear more righteous than you, because your sins were more
vile than theirs. So you too must bear your shame and disgrace, since you have made your sisters appear righteous.
When thy sisters,
Sodom and her daughters, shall return to their
former estate, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their
former estate, then thou and thy daughters shall return to your
former estate.
And your sisters,
Sodom with her daughters and Samaria with her daughters, will return to their
former state. You and your daughters will also return to your
former state.
For thy sister
Sodom was not mentioned by thy mouth in the day of thy pride,
Did you not treat your sister
Sodom as an object of
scorn in the day of your pride,
For thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even deal with thee as thou hast done, which hast
despised the oath in breaking the covenant.
For this is what the Lord GOD says: I will deal with you according to your deeds, since you have
despised the oath by breaking the covenant.
Then thou shalt remember thy ways, and be
ashamed, when thou shalt receive thy sisters, thine elder and thy younger: and I will give them unto thee
for daughters, but not by thy covenant.
Then you will remember your ways and be
ashamed when you receive your older and younger sisters. I will give them to you as daughters, but not because of My covenant with you.
That thou mayest remember, and be confounded, and never open thy mouth any more because of thy shame, when I am
pacified toward thee
for all that thou hast done, saith the Lord GOD.
so that when I make
atonement for all you have done, you will remember and be
ashamed and never again open your mouth because of your disgrace, declares the Lord GOD.”
Son of man, put
forth a
riddle, and speak a parable unto the house of Israel;
“Son of man,
pose a
riddle; speak a parable to the house of Israel
And it grew, and became a spreading vine of low
stature, whose branches turned toward him, and the roots thereof were under him: so it became a vine, and brought
forth branches, and shot
forth sprigs.
It
sprouted and became a spreading vine, low in height, with branches turned toward him; yet its roots remained where it stood. So it became a vine and yielded branches and sent out shoots.
There was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers: and, behold, this vine did bend her roots toward him, and shot
forth her branches toward him, that he might water it by the furrows of her
plantation.
But there was another great eagle with great wings and many feathers. And behold, this vine bent its roots toward him. It stretched out its branches to him from its planting bed, so that he might water it.
It was planted in a good soil by great waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine.
It had been planted in good soil by abundant waters in order to yield branches and bear fruit and become a splendid vine.’
But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and much people. Shall he
prosper? shall he escape that doeth such things? or shall he break the covenant, and be delivered?
But this king rebelled against Babylon by sending his envoys to Egypt to ask
for horses and a large army. Will he
flourish? Will the one who does such things escape? Can he break a covenant and yet escape?’
Neither shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company make for him in the war, by casting up mounts, and building forts, to cut off many persons:
Pharaoh with his mighty army and vast
horde will not help him in battle, when ramps are built and siege walls constructed to destroy many lives.
And I will spread my net upon him, and he shall be taken in my
snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, and will
plead with him there
for his
trespass that he hath
trespassed against me.
I will spread My net over him and catch him in My
snare. I will bring him to Babylon and
execute judgment upon him there
for the treason he committed against Me.
In the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it: and it shall bring
forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a goodly
cedar: and under it shall dwell all fowl of every wing; in the shadow of the branches thereof shall they dwell.
I will plant it on the mountain heights of Israel so that it will bear branches; it will yield fruit and become a
majestic cedar. Birds of every kind will nest under it, taking shelter in the shade of its branches.
He that hath not given
forth upon
usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man,
He does not
engage in
usury or take excess interest, but he withholds his hand from iniquity and executes true justice between men.
Hath given
forth upon
usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.
He engages in
usury and takes excess interest. Will this son live? He will not! Since he has committed all these abominations, he will surely die; his blood will be on his own head.
That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received
usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die
for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.
He withholds his hand from
harming the poor and takes no interest or
usury. He keeps My ordinances and follows My statutes. Such a man will not die
for his father’s iniquity. He will surely live.
As
for his father, because he cruelly
oppressed,
spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.
As
for his father, he will die
for his own iniquity, because he practiced
extortion,
robbed his brother, and did what was wrong among his people.
When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.
If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and practices iniquity, he will die for this. He will die because of the iniquity he has committed.
Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have
transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit:
for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
Cast away from
yourselves all the transgressions you have committed, and fashion
for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. Why should you die, O house of Israel?
For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn
yourselves, and live ye.
For I take no pleasure in
anyone’s death, declares the Lord GOD. So
repent and live!
Moreover take thou up a
lamentation for the princes of Israel,
“As
for you, take up a
lament for the princes of Israel
And she had strong rods
for the sceptres of them that bare rule, and her
stature was
exalted among the thick branches, and she appeared in her height with the multitude of her branches.
It had strong branches, fit
for a ruler’s
scepter. It towered high above the thick branches, conspicuous
for its height and
for its dense foliage.
And fire is gone out of a rod of her branches, which hath
devoured her fruit, so that she hath no strong rod to be a
sceptre to rule. This is a
lamentation, and shall be
for a
lamentation.
Fire has gone out from its main branch and
devoured its fruit; on it no strong branch remains fit
for a ruler’s
scepter.’ This is a
lament and shall be used as a
lament.”
In the day that I lifted up mine hand unto them, to bring them
forth of the land of Egypt into a land that I had
espied for them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands:
On that day I
swore to bring them out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had searched out
for them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the glory of all lands.
But they rebelled against me, and would not
hearken unto me: they did not every man cast away the abominations of their eyes, neither did they
forsake the idols of Egypt: then I said, I will pour out my
fury upon them to
accomplish my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.
But they rebelled against Me and refused to
listen. None of them cast away the abominations before their eyes, and they did not
forsake the idols of Egypt. So I resolved to pour out My wrath upon them and
vent My anger against them in the land of Egypt.
But I wrought
for my name’s sake, that it should not be
polluted before the heathen, among whom they were, in whose sight I made myself known unto them, in bringing them
forth out of the land of Egypt.
But I acted
for the sake of My name, that it should not be
profaned in the eyes of the nations among whom they were living, in whose sight I had revealed Myself to Israel by bringing them out of the land of Egypt.
Wherefore I caused them to go forth out of the land of Egypt, and brought them into the wilderness.
So I brought them out of the land of Egypt and led them into the wilderness.
And I gave them my statutes, and shewed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them.
And I gave them My statutes and made known to them My ordinances—for the man who does these things will live by them.
But I wrought
for my name’s sake, that it should not be
polluted before the heathen, in whose sight I brought them out.
But I acted
for the sake of My name, so that it would not be
profaned in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out.
Because they
despised my judgments, and walked not in my statutes, but
polluted my sabbaths:
for their heart went after their idols.
because they kept
rejecting My ordinances, refusing to walk in My statutes, and
profaning My Sabbaths;
for their hearts continually went after their idols.
Nevertheless I withdrew mine hand, and wrought
for my name’s sake, that it should not be
polluted in the sight of the heathen, in whose sight I brought them
forth.
But I
withheld My hand and acted
for the sake of My name, so that it would not be
profaned in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out.
Because they had not executed my judgments, but had
despised my statutes, and had
polluted my sabbaths, and their eyes were after their fathers’ idols.
For they did not practice My ordinances, but they rejected My statutes and
profaned My Sabbaths, fixing their eyes on the idols of their fathers.
For when I had brought them into the land,
for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to them, then they saw every high hill, and all the thick trees, and they offered there their sacrifices, and there they presented the
provocation of their offering: there also they made their sweet savour, and poured out there their drink offerings.
When I brought them into the land that I
swore to give them and they saw any high hill or
leafy tree, there they offered their sacrifices, presented offerings that
provoked Me, sent up their
fragrant incense, and poured out their drink offerings.
For when ye offer your gifts, when ye make your sons to pass through the fire, ye
pollute yourselves with all your idols, even unto this day: and shall I be enquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I will not be enquired of by you.
When you offer your gifts, sacrificing your sons in the fire, you continue to
defile yourselves with all your idols to this day. So should I be consulted by you, O house of Israel? As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I will not be consulted by you!
And I will
purge out from among you the rebels, and them that
transgress against me: I will bring them
forth out of the country where they
sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
And I will
purge you of those who
rebel and
transgress against Me. I will bring them out of the land in which they dwell, but they will not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
As
for you, O house of Israel, thus saith the Lord GOD; Go ye, serve ye every one his idols, and
hereafter also, if ye will not
hearken unto me: but
pollute ye my holy name no more with your gifts, and with your idols.
And as
for you, O house of Israel, this is what the Lord GOD says: Go and serve your idols, every one of you. But afterward, you will surely
listen to Me, and you will no longer
defile My holy name with your gifts and idols.
For in mine holy mountain, in the mountain of the height of Israel, saith the Lord GOD, there shall all the house of Israel, all of them in the land, serve me: there will I accept them, and there will I require your offerings, and the firstfruits of your oblations, with all your holy things.
For on My holy mountain, the high mountain of Israel, declares the Lord GOD, there the whole house of Israel, all of them, will serve Me in the land. There I will accept them and will require your offerings and choice gifts, along with all your holy sacrifices.
And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall bring you into the land of Israel, into the country for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to your fathers.
Then you will know that I am the LORD, when I bring you into the land of Israel, the land that I
swore to give your fathers.
And there shall ye remember your ways, and all your doings, wherein ye have been
defiled; and ye shall
lothe yourselves in your own sight
for all your evils that ye have committed.
And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have wrought with you for my name’s sake, not according to your wicked ways, nor according to your corrupt doings, O ye house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.
Then you will know, O house of Israel, that I am the LORD, when I have dealt with you for the sake of My name and not according to your wicked ways and corrupt acts, declares the Lord GOD.”
Son of man, set thy face toward the south, and drop thy word toward the south, and
prophesy against the
forest of the south field;
“Son of man, set your face toward the south,
preach against it, and
prophesy against the
forest of the Negev.
And say to the
forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will
kindle a fire in thee, and it shall
devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be
quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein.
Say to the
forest of the Negev: Hear the word of the LORD! This is what the Lord GOD says: I am about to
ignite in you a fire, and it will
devour all your trees, both green and dry. The
blazing flame will not be
quenched, and by it every face from south to north will be
scorched.
And say to the land of Israel, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I am against thee, and will draw
forth my sword out of his
sheath, and will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked.
and tell her that this is what the LORD says: ‘I am against you, and I will draw My sword from its
sheath and cut off from you both the righteous and the wicked.
Seeing then that I will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked, therefore shall my sword go
forth out of his
sheath against all flesh from the south to the north:
Because I will cut off both the righteous and the wicked, My sword will be
unsheathed against
everyone from south to north.
That all flesh may know that I the LORD have drawn
forth my sword out of his
sheath: it shall not return any more.
Then all flesh will know that I, the LORD, have taken My sword from its
sheath, not to return it again.’
And it shall be, when they say unto thee, Wherefore sighest thou? that thou shalt answer,
For the
tidings; because it cometh: and every heart shall
melt, and all hands shall be feeble, and every spirit shall
faint, and all knees shall be weak as water: behold, it cometh, and shall be brought to pass, saith the Lord GOD.
And when they ask, ‘Why are you
groaning?’ you are to say, ‘Because of the news that is coming. Every heart will
melt, and every hand will go
limp. Every spirit will
faint, and every
knee will turn to water.’
Yes, it is coming and it will surely happen, declares the Lord GOD.”
It is sharpened to make a
sore slaughter; it is
furbished that it may
glitter: should we then make
mirth? it contemneth the rod of my son, as every tree.
it is sharpened
for the slaughter, polished to
flash like
lightning! Should we
rejoice in the
scepter of My son? The sword despises every such stick.
Cry and
howl, son of man:
for it shall be upon my people, it shall be upon all the princes of Israel: terrors by reason of the sword shall be upon my people:
smite therefore upon thy
thigh.
Cry out and
wail, O son of man,
for the sword is
wielded against My people; it is against all the princes of Israel! They are
tossed to the sword with My people; therefore strike your
thigh.
I have set the point of the sword against all their gates, that their heart may
faint, and their ruins be multiplied:
ah! it is made bright, it is
wrapped up
for the slaughter.
So that their hearts may
melt and many may
stumble, I have appointed at all their gates a sword
for slaughter.
Yes, it is ready to
flash like
lightning; it is drawn
for slaughter.
Also, thou son of man,
appoint thee two ways, that the sword of the king of Babylon may come: both
twain shall come
forth out of one land: and choose thou a place, choose it at the head of the way to the city.
“Now you, son of man, mark out two roads
for the sword of the king of Babylon to take, both starting from the same land. And make a
signpost where the road branches off to each city.
Mark out one road
for the sword to come against Rabbah of the
Ammonites, and another against Judah into
fortified Jerusalem.
For the king of Babylon stood at the parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use
divination: he made his arrows bright, he consulted with images, he looked in the liver.
For the king of Babylon stands at the
fork in the road, at the junction of the two roads, to seek an
omen: He shakes the arrows, he consults the idols, he examines the liver.
At his right hand was the
divination for Jerusalem, to
appoint captains, to open the mouth in the slaughter, to lift up the voice with
shouting, to
appoint battering rams against the gates, to cast a mount, and to build a
fort.
In his right hand appears the
portent for Jerusalem, where he is to set up
battering rams, to call
for the slaughter, to lift a battle cry, to direct the
battering rams against the gates, to build a
ramp, and to erect a siege wall.
And thou,
profane wicked prince of Israel, whose day is come, when iniquity shall have an end,
And you, O
profane and wicked prince of Israel, the day has come
for your final punishment.’
And thou, son of man,
prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning the
Ammonites, and concerning their reproach; even say thou, The sword, the sword is drawn:
for the slaughter it is
furbished, to
consume because of the
glittering:
Now
prophesy, son of man, and declare that this is what the Lord GOD says concerning the
Ammonites and their contempt: ‘A sword! A sword is drawn
for slaughter, polished to
consume, to
flash like
lightning—
Whiles they see vanity unto thee, whiles they divine a lie unto thee, to bring thee upon the necks of them that are slain, of the wicked, whose day is come, when their iniquity shall have an end.
while they offer false visions for you and lying divinations about you— to be placed on the necks of the wicked who are slain, whose day has come, the time of their final punishment.
Thou shalt be for fuel to the fire; thy blood shall be in the midst of the land; thou shalt be no more remembered: for I the LORD have spoken it.
You will be fuel
for the fire. Your blood will
stain your own land. You will not be remembered,
for I, the LORD, have spoken.’”
Now, thou son of man,
wilt thou judge,
wilt thou judge the
bloody city?
yea, thou shalt
shew her all her abominations.
“As
for you, son of man, will you judge her? Will you pass judgment on the city of
bloodshed? Then
confront her with all her abominations
